The Five Orange Pips
ACD likes a shipwreck, doesn't he?
I will leave discussions about the Ku Klux Klan to those with more knowledge on the subject.
A mendicant is someone who generally takes a vow of poverty and relies on charity to survive - such as a wandering preacher. In Christianity, this was often done in deliberate imitation of the Apostles, who were told to rely on others (and by extension God) for their needs. Mendicants having a luxurious club would be a tad hypocritical.
We have two barques referenced here. To repeat my comment from "The Gloria Scott": a bark - or barque - is a type of sailing ship with three or more masts - the first two masts have square sails, the one at the back had them aligned with the hull. They were fast ships that needed a relatively small crew.
The UK's position on the Gulf Stream may keep the place from getting very cold in winter, but it also leaves us open to big storms.
Pince-nez glasses were very popular in this time period.
The area around Horsham does indeed have pretty clay-ey soil that's good for growing crops.
Horsham is a market and commuter town 31 miles from London.
Cheating at cards was apparently the worst thing a gentleman could do. In Ian Fleming's novels, two of the villains are immediately clearly wrong-uns as they're rich guys who feel the need to cheat.
Being "sent to Coventry" is a British expression for being ostracised. Joseph appears to have sent himself to the West Midlands town.
Pondicherry, now called Puducherry, was in fact a French enclave on the south-eastern coast of India and was not in fact transferred to Indian control until 1954.
"London E." was one of the postal divisions of the city at the time - it remains as the E postcode area, split into 22 districts, including two specially for Natwest and News International. Yep, Murdoch has his own postcode.
PC Cook is rather off his normal beat. H Division covered Whitechapel and had, a few years prior to this story coming out, failed to catch Jack the Ripper.
The Embankment here refers to the Victoria Embankment, a road and pedestrian avenue built by the river as part of a land reclamation project earlier in the century. It had the side effect of permanently ending any hope of Frost Fairs - the river now flows too fast to freeze.
I believe this story takes place pretty much entirely in Baker Street.
Lloyd's refers to Lloyd's of London, a very long running maritime insurance marketplace, who also underwrite a bunch of other insurance policies, including film stars' legs. They keep comprehensive records of ship movements for this purposes.
Gravesend is a town in Kent near what is now the M25 and would be a good place to spot a ship before the Thames Estuary widens out - beyond that, you might easily miss a ship in poor visibility from the few communities beyond it.
The transatlantic telegraph cables were firmly in operation by this point. Their successor cables form the backbone of the modern Internet.
Mail was generally transported on the fastest ships i.e. the ocean liners; so you'd be talking around a week to cross the Atlantic at this point. A sailing ship would be looking at three times as long.
Sliced bread - i.e. bread that came pre-sliced when you bought it - was not a thing until 1928.
Please note that those who wish to post orange pips to the United States today will require a permit from the US Department of Agriculture.

10 Unique Places to Visit in Pondicherry
10 Unique Places to Visit in Pondicherry
Pondicherry, India is often called the Pearl of the East for good reason. It's a popular entry point to South India, thanks to its unique beaches, architecture, and friendly locals. If you're planning a visit, you won't want to miss these 10 must-see attractions. They're some of the most famous tourist spots in the city and will give you a real sense of why Pondicherry is such a special place. Chunnambar Mala – A Long Hilly Walkway Chinna Malai is a walking path that goes up and down hills and is 10 kilometers away from Puducherry. The path goes through quiet forests and little villages. The whole way is really pretty and you'll see lots of green trees and hills. If you look far enough, you can see a big area where people farm. At the end of the path, there's a temple on top of a hill that has amazing views of waterfalls, forests, rivers, and faraway hills. It looks especially nice when the sun is going down. If you like nature or want a break from the city, you should definitely check out Chinna Malai. Auroville – An International City Auroville is a famous "city of dawn" that people come from all over the world to visit. It's located on a 100-hectare piece of land just 10 kilometers away from Puducherry city. Auroville is a special community that tries out new ways for people to live together in peace and harmony, with the guidance of the divine. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a spiritual family in Pondicherry where Mirra Alfassa, who is also called "The Mother," lived. She created Auroville as a place where people from different backgrounds can come together and learn from each other. If you're interested in spirituality or new ways of living, Auroville is definitely worth a visit. Balakrishna Hanuman Temple If you're looking for a unique and interesting place to visit, you should check out the Balakrishna Hanuman Temple located 35 kilometers away from Puducherry. One of the temple's most distinctive features is the Hanuman idols that sit on seats made from human skulls. It's definitely a one-of-a-kind sight that you won't find anywhere else. If you're interested in Hindu mythology or just want to experience something new and different, the Balakrishna Hanuman Temple is definitely worth a visit. Aurobindo Ashram & Yogashram The Aurobindo Ashram & Yogashram is a place where you can explore both spirituality and yoga. Whether you're looking to deepen your spiritual practice or simply want to try out some new yoga poses, the Aurobindo Ashram & Yogashram is a great place to do it. Gandhi Statue and Memorial Library This memorial is a special place that pays tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, who helped India gain independence. It was built on Marina Beach after his assassination in 1948 and was opened to the public in 1972. The library next to it has some of Gandhi's writings and one of his sandals. The statue inside the memorial is made of marble and was created by a famous sculptor named Pietro Porcelli. Beach Parks Pondicherry has many beaches, but the two most popular are Marina Beach and Goubert’s Cove. Marina Beach is great for sunbathing and swimming, while Goubert’s Cove has stunning views of the sunrise and sunset. [ad_1] A photograph of the BCCI logo. Source (X) Day 3 of Round 4 in the Ranji Trophy produced thrilling action, with gripping contests across the country. Odisha struggled against Mumbai. They were bowled out for 285 in the first innings, despite a knock of 102 from Sandeep Pattnaik. Shams Mulani claimed 6/115. After making 602/4 in their only innings, Mumbai then reduced the visitors to 126/5, to stay on course for an innings win. Tripura’s solid batting display, taking them to 482/7, has put Baroda under pressure. Having made 235 in the first innings, Baroda will have to bat well on the last day to avoid defeat. They were 37/0 at stumps. Tripura had denied Mumbai an outright win in the previous round. A day earlier, Dhruv Shorey had shone for Vidarbha with a spectacular century. The new day belonged to Yash Rathod, whose stunning 128 put Himachal Pradesh on the back foot. Himachal trail by 217, sitting at 51/2, and will face intense pressure to shift the momentum. Rajasthan staged a strong comeback against Hyderabad, thanks to standout innings from Mahipal Lomror and Shubham Garhwal, who scored 111 and 108, respectively. Despite that, at 374/8, Rajasthan didn’t look like surpassing Hyderabad’s 410. The tail took them to 425. In the Delhi-Chandigarh match, the latter hold the advantage, needing 157 more to win with both openers at the crease. Round 4 has seen several double centuries, and Aarya Desai added to the list with a knock of 200 for Gujarat. His team trails Puducherry by just two runs. Meanwhile, Railways responded positively to Chhattisgarh’s 500, led by Suraj Ahuja’s 135 and Vivek Singh’s 86. Railways, however, still trail by 177, with seven wickets in hand. In the Andhra-Uttarakhand clash, the former face a challenging task, needing 313 more for victory. They have already lost a wicket with just eight runs on the board. For Saurashtra, Harvik Desai’s 155 pushed his side to 386, with Jharkhand responding with 74/1. Bihar are struggling in response to Madhya Pradesh’s massive 616, closing Day 3 at 331/8. 5@5: As was known, India not traveling to Pakistan for Champions Trophy! https://t.co/ykHdjzEsRl — RevSportz Global (@RevSportzGlobal) November 8, 2024 For more sports content: RevSportz The post Mumbai sniff big win, Baroda under pressure against Tripura appeared first on Sports News Portal | Latest Sports Articles | Revsports. [ad_1] GG News Bureau Srinagar, 22nd Oct. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said that a government taking appropriate steps to meet the expectations of its citizens would receive the full support of the LG’s office. In an interview with PTI, Sinha confirmed that local bodies’ elections in the Union Territory would be conducted once the backward classes commission submits its report regarding the number of reserved seats for Other Backward Classes (OBCs), along with considerations of weather conditions and security availability. Sinha emphasized, “The government that takes appropriate steps to meet the expectations of the people, I assure them, the LG’s office will be ready to give full support to it.” He also addressed questions about the working arrangement between the LG’s office and the Chief Minister, stating that any elected government aims to fulfill the public’s expectations. In response to the Congress’s opposition and its petition against the nomination of five MLAs to the Jammu and Kashmir assembly, Sinha reiterated the democratic right to oppose any actions. He referred to historical precedents, recalling that during the formation of the Puducherry Assembly, it was proposed to fill seats through nominations, with 10 percent of the members being nominated. Sinha noted that the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, allow the LG to nominate five MLAs to the assembly, a measure opposed by several parties, including the National Conference (NC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Congress. He mentioned that panchayat elections should have occurred earlier, but the administration is currently waiting for the OBC reservations report. “If the elections had been held without this (report), the court would have stopped them. Therefore, we had to go to Parliament to amend this,” Sinha explained, asserting that preparations for the polls are in place. The Jammu and Kashmir government has established a commission to recommend the number of reserved seats for OBCs in local bodies, with local elections expected to follow soon after the commission’s findings are submitted.
