So, I was unfamiliar with Monogatari Novels until I reblogged that last post and shared in a Discord server with friends that I'd heard this news and was excited.
I am. far less excited now. They are dicey at best, awful at worst, and I'm definitely going to be watching their releases with a great deal of skepticism.
I don't have time to do as thorough a blog post about this as it really deserves, but I did want to gather in one place the receipts that were shared with me, so that if others didn't know, they could learn more about the company we're dealing with and make their own decisions about whether to buy from them or not.
First: I noticed myself, and thought it was odd, that a place that primarily publishes Chinese fiction would use the name Monogatari, which is a Japanese word. Further, tho I hadn't noticed, it's actually worse: they use a rising sun as their icon, which is. uh. A choice. A pretty fucked up choice, given the history between Japan and China. When this was pointed out to them, they said repeatedly they just didn't know/didn't realize, which is a fucking weird thing for a company that things they have the expertise to translate these books to say about the history of the country they're translating books from. Like. It makes me think they don't actually know jackshit.
They also have a bad record regarding who they're picking as translators and their understanding of copyright law. (I recommend you use the links, the tweets often have more info in the replies)
(one of those mistranslated lines is so basic that even I, with my less than 2.5 yrs of studying, could have translated correctly.)
Basically: they are sus af. They've also apparently said on their Spanish-language twitter that they've been lying on their English-language one to appease US fans.
I was really excited a couple hours ago. Now, I'm EXTREMELY wary.
Just...be on the look-out, y'all.
To be clear: this doesn't mean that their subsequent publications will be a cluster. They might have learned! They might be doing better! Or, they might just have picked better, more trustworthy partners for specific projects! I don't want to say "do not support under any circumstances." But I know... I'd rather know all the above than not. And I figured other people would want to know too.
(research shared with permission from the person who shared it with me.)

Just some interesting notes from an interview between Nozomu Mochizuki and the publisher TO Books regarding Tearmoon's writing
#Tearmoon Empire#Tearmoon Teikoku Monogatari#Nozomu Mochizuki#Mia Luna Tearmoon#Christianity#Because it was brought up in the interview#Salt and Light#Frankly it was a smart decision to write Mia how she was written because it does help us see her character development#I'm not sure whether there were other otome villainess stories that also played around not using isekai before Tearmoon in 2017-2018#I'm actually surprised the representative of the publisher was the one who brought up Mochizuki's faith in the interview#If you think I'm not gonna go through a list of the characters' names and find those Biblical ones you're sorely mistaken#This also applies to the chapters based on those missionaries' stories in the web novel#This interview was done around 2020-2021 I believe

So as far as I'm aware this is a one-off, but I think we as fans need to be more vocal about the nature of danmei and baihe publisher "Monogatari Novels" before bigger creators in our community accept more sponsorships from them. I was already skeptical of them, but since learning they've allegedly advertised books they didn't have the rights to at the time, and that their higher ups have (allegedly) expressed not only disdain for their English-speaking market, but confusion as to why English-speaking fans care if they plagiarize fan translations for official releases, I really think they need to be run out of this market before a bunch of newbies are lured into buying their releases. It sucks because they have (or at least claim to have) the English licensing rights to a lot of cool series, including more baihe, but I do not trust them to handle these translations well.
I've talked about Monogatari Novels before on here, but for anyone unfamiliar with them, I encourage you to look at the reactions of fans to their licensing announcements. The worst of it was with Legendary Master's Wife; the first version they put up for preview was apparently an edited MTL, and the editor in question---who was not, to my knowledge, a fluent Chinese speaker---made several mistakes . I haven't seen a Legendary Master's Wife fan speak positively about Monogatari, but even in less critical spaces (like the baihe tags here on Tumblr) there's still a lot of reticence. It should be a good thing that lesser known works are being licensed, but if it comes with plagiarism, poor quality, and lies, it's worse than nothing. I do not trust them with my money, but I know a lot of people will; especially if they keep getting platformed by YouTubers like Kictor.

Baihe Manhua 'Soulmate' Print Edition Licensed
On Thursday, Monogatari Novels announced that it has licensed modern fantasy Yuri webtoon Soulmate and will publish the story in two omnibus print volumes.
The GL webtoon is written by Keran Bing & Wenzhi Lizi, and illustrated by Lizi. It is a fantasy drama romance following Qi, who is transported into the past to save the lover of her life from a terminal illness.
The publisher further describes the series:
Qi went to sleep embraced by her girlfriend, Yuanzi. However, when she opened her eyes she realized that she had been transported 10 years back to the past, back when she was still in high school. While she sees this as an opportunity to save the love of her life, what she doesn't realize is that her teenage self is in her adult body, 10 years into the future, and has no clue about the life Qi has built or how precious the time she has left with Yuanzi is. No matter the time, no matter the age, their love resonates as they stand by each other's side. Will they be able to conquer fate?
The first paperback volume will be released on November 10th, 2023, in Spanish and on March 4th, 2024, in English. A special edition is also available and will include an acrylic standee. The series is translated by Lera.
Soulmate was initially serialized digitally on Kuaikan Manhua in Chinese. The webcomic is available to read online in English from Tapas. It is 40 episodes long, with one additional extra chapter and a Valentine's special.
You can preorder the first print volume of Soulmate ahead of its March 4, 2024, English release and read the digital version today on Tapas.

Hello, this ask is just for fun......
Top 5 (or top 3) Favorite female characters :
Top 5 (or top 3) Favorite male characters :
Top 5 Favorite animanga :
Animanga you are currently enjoying :
Animanga that exceeded all your expectations :
Top 3 Unpopular animanga you really love :
Favorite romance :
Favorite action animanga :
Favorite fantasy :
Favorite sci -fi :
Favorite drama :
Favorite comedy :
Top 3 Favorite anime movies :
Next in your watch list :
Next in your read list :
Top 3 Favorite antagonists:
Top 5 (or top 3) favorite ships (can be canon or non canon) :
Thanks if you want to answer....
This sure took me a while because, damn, I had to think a lot about each answer.
So, top 3 favorite females:
Sheryl Nome
Oikawa Tsurara
Kuchiki Rukia
Top 3 favorite males:
Gilbert Bougainvillea
Takigawa Masaki
Alphonse Elric
Top 5 Favorite animanga:
I can't really put them in the same category, so I'm gonna write down one of each.
Favorite anime movie: Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi
Favorite anime show: Heike Monogatari
Favorite manga: Tongari Boushi no Atelier
Favorite light novel: Violet Evergarden
Favorite regular novel: Mouryou no Hako
Animanga I'm currently enjoying (so far):
Yatagarasu
Hibike! Euphonium S3
Kaijuu 8-gou
Kuroshitsuji S4
Dungeon Meshi
Urusei Yatsura S2
Ookami to Koushinryou
Boku no Hero Academia S7
Tonari no Youkai-san
Bartender
Tadaima, Okaeri
Touken Ranbu Kai
Boukyaku Battery
Jii-san Baa-san Wakagaeru
The Fable
Seiyuu Radio no Uraomote
Now, I'm still waiting for some stuff to air, so this isn't a complete list. Also, the last title isn't exactly one that I'm super enjoying because it's butchering the original, but I'm sticking with it because I like the franchise. I recommend the manga instead of the anime.
Animanga that exceeded all my expectations
The only one I can think of is Suzumiya Haruhi. It didn't exceed all my expectations because they were high from the start, but goddamn. I despise the fact that I came into the show knowing only the memes and opening clip, thinking it was gonna be absolute weeb garbage (because back in the old days it was much easier to not run into spoilers and I'm not even sure if the novel was already being fantranslated at the time), only to find out that it actually fucking slaps. Can you imagine how pissed I was. That I couldn't hate this bullshit of a show. Also endless eight. That shit was traumatizing even though I caught on quick and skipped most of it.
Top 3 Unpopular animanga I really love
I won't say unpopular but these are definitely underrated.
Tsurune (I mean the novel; the anime doesn't deserve much recognition beyond the good animation and sound design, imo)
Nurarihyon no Mago (I know it's been over for more than a decade and the fandom is long dead, but it was temporarily revived by the recent new chapters, and it was criminally underrated in the west back when it was still being published)
Gangsta (used to be really popular when it was on-going, but the fandom lost its hype completely both in the west and in Japan after it entered hiatus because of the author's health)
Favorite romance: Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso
Favorite action animanga: can't possibly choose
Favorite fantasy: Tongari Boushi no Atelier
Favorite sci-fi: can't possibly choose
Favorite drama: Nana
Favorite comedy: Gintama (I know that comedy isn't the only genre this thing belongs to but comedy is the main one. And yes, I know the story is actually deep but it still takes a backseat to the comedy, narratologically speaking, and this shouldn't be looked down on. Fight me.)
Top 3 Favorite anime movies
I don't really have favorites in any particular order other than Sen to Chihiro, so here are a random few of my faves:
Kimi no Na wa
Senkou no Hathaway
Mononoke-hime
Next in your watch list: All the stuff from this season that hasn't yet come out.
Next in your read list: Nothing, actually. Just keeping up with the stuff I was already reading. Accepting recs!
Top 3 Favorite antagonists:
Johan Liebert
Griffith
Meruem
Top 5 (or top 3) favorite ships (can be canon or non canon):
Let's go with top 10 because I'm a professional shipper. By the way, number 1 is the one that set the bar for all the other ships and anything else is actually just sharing second place. These are really just a few from the top of my head, since I have at least one favorite ship for every fandom I'm in.
RikuTsura (Nura Rikuo/Tsurara)
HakuSen (Haku/Ogino Chihiro)
SakuShao (Kinomoto Sakura/Li Shaoran)
IchiRuki (Kurosaki Ichigo/Kuchiki Rukia)
HaruRin (Nanase Haruka/Matsuoka Rin)
GilVi (Gilbert Bougainvillea/Violet Evergarden)
SoMa (Soul Evans/Maka Albarn)
AruSheri (Saotome Alto/Sheryl Nome)
YuuVic (Katsuki Yuuri/Victor Nikiforov)

This isn't quite there yet, but it's getting dark outside.
This is a post about anime.
I.
The second part of this season of Monogatari, the animated adaptation of Nisio Isin's light novel series, is Nademonogatari, the continuing story of Nadeko Sengoku.
Nadeko is a shut-in with a problem.
The problem isn't that she's a shut-in. No, Nadeko would like to stay a shut-in for as long as humanly possible.
You see, Nadeko is an aspiring manga artist. Nadeko would like to be published, to have a weekly serial, telling stories to adolescent girls about adolescent girls in love.
This, Nadeko tells us, is the only thing she wants. Nadeko would like to sacrifice everything, everything but sleeping and eating and bathing, to this one thing.
No, the problem is that, in Nademonogatari's instigating event, Nadeko's parents tell her to get a job.
II.
Not much happens in Nademonogatari.
That's to be expected in Monogatari. But it's particularly true of Nademonogatari.
Nadeko's parents telling her to get a job is the only thing that actually happens in Nademonogatari, and even that doesn't happen on the page or screen.
Nademonogatari is Nadeko speaking to herself, to a doll, or to apparitions of herself, projections of past personalities that Nadeko has trouble recognizing as her own.
Nadeko observes that she hasn't spoken to anyone in a long time besides a humanoid doll and a distant friend. And she doesn't talk much to the friend.
Monogatari is about apparitions, entities that take their shape and weight from the humans in their company.
The language here is a bit tricky. The ontology is meant to be ambiguous, I think. It's best not to be too literal here, or to take statements for more than they're worth.
Nademonogatari follows Nadeko and one particular apparition, Yotsugi Ononoki, a humanoid doll that adapts her personality to fit "whoever is beside her."
And in Nademonogatari, that's just Nadeko.
III.
The apparition is not kind to Nadeko.
"You're naive," she says. "Useless," she says. "Idiotic," she says, all in the same neutral tone, commending Nadeko's parents for "calling their idiot daughter an idiot."
As often as not, Nadeko agrees with the apparition. "I am useless," she says. "I am stupid." But here she demurs: "It's not like they called me an idiot. They just said what I'm doing is idiotic."
The apparition adapts. "I don't think all of your efforts are useless," she acknowledges, "and I don't think what your idiot self does is idiotic."
This is the apparition agreeing with Nadeko. This is the apparition being kind to Nadeko. This is the apparition's kindness, in Nadeko's company.
It's Nadeko's kindness to Nadeko.
IV.
Nadeko has given herself an out.
If she achieves something as an author before she graduates, then. Then. It's not entirely clear what then. Then she'll convince her parents, she says. To let her stay.
The apparition has to be blunt. (She's always blunt, but here she says she has to be.) "If you don't achieve anything by graduation," she says, "you'll have to give up." And here Nadeko agrees.
But the apparition has a suggestion: If she posted under her own name and face, as a version of herself—middle school student, runaway, shut-in—she would have no trouble.
In the background, photos of Nadeko's face and silhouette, and a summary biography: isolated, bullied, a runaway that lived in a shrine all alone in the back of the woods.
"Your dramatic story is sure to make your work shine more brilliantly than it actually can," the apparition says.
Nadeko demurs.
V.
I suppose we could take Nadeko's response in different ways. It could be unease, the shut-in's unease. It could be anxiety, the runaway's anxiety. It could be fear, the girl's fear.
I read it, perhaps unkindly, as our author smirking at the implausibility of the situation. Nadeko would have no trouble, of course, if only she would make herself available.
But she doesn't.

👎🏻 Our Skyy2 - it’s a shame because except for The Eclipse and NLMG none of the episodes have been good. The ABAAB episodes have been surprisingly entertaining and they were better than the show itself but overall it’s obvious that this whole production was rushed and most of them did not put the required thought + effort into creating these stories; especially the MSP episodes had me shaking my head for so many reasons. Maybe the concept of 16 episodes for 8 couples in the span of 3 months was putting too much on their plates but it’s frustrating because it had a promising start. Hopefully this season marks the end of this project altogether.

Who is iMarine?
iMarine (アイマリン) is the main character of the iMarine Project (アイマリンプロジェクト), a multimedia project developed by the Japanese pachinko company Sanyo Bussan. It is based on the company's Umi Monogatari pachinko series, specifically on the character Marine. She is voiced by Aya Uchida.
The premise of the project was to turn Marine into "a character of infinite possibilities", enlisting multiple creators such as illustrators and music producers, with each making up their own interpretation of the character. The project was divided into "volumes", with "Volume 1" being released in 2015.
In December 2019, the character was "rebooted", giving her a new, science fiction-flavored lore and environment, with each "volume" having a connection to the story in some way. This "reboot" has been given the title of "Shinshou" (新章, "new chapter").
So far, the project has 5 "volumes" (13 if you count the Shinshou ones).
This post will focus on the Shinshou version of iMarine.
Profile
iMarine is a mysterious girl living inside the simulated world of ELEUSIA, where humans have been living after the destruction of Earth. Here, humans had their memories of everything that happened a year before erased.
She is a vocalist for the band "Free Armored Orchestra" (自由機甲楽団, Jiyū kikō gakudan). One day, while doing a guerrilla live, a boy named Kaito notices iMarine singing. She notices him and realizes that he is the key to unraveling the truth about this world.
iMarine's singing can cause "waves" of energy, similar to ocean waves, to appear.
The story continues in the novel, published in the official website. I will not reveal more details since I would be giving spoilers.

Given the things known about the adaptation as it is seemingly implied I thought it would be fun to try an imagine or chart out how’s and why’s of how off+ monster would be adapted
If tsukihi undo is first one can only imagine what kind of changes to order one could make for the sake of operating on a smooth track of adaptation
The first thing one notices about the tracks of off and monster season is that there’s two main tracks they follow plot wise to their respective ends in shinomono, the Nadeko track and the Shinobu track
By following the prestablished novel release order you can easily reach the end of said track smoothly, however it’s pretty likely they’ll change the order of some arcs for advertising or really any other standard reason. Personally, i believe main reason why tsukihi undo is first is because it’s very marketable, however if one thinks on those tracks you can get some very wild results!
Below the cut are charts and explanations of bizzare ideas and foolish thoughts
This chart exists as a precedent to this conversation, since I cant explain it in the image description I’ll start with the foundations. As a narrative monogatari is non linear, because of how it handles that fact you can essentially read some arcs out of release order and have it not “ruin the story” for you. Truly as long as you don’t skip something that needs another novel’s context to make sense at all or undermines a story element, it’s generally fine.
Essentially what I mean by this is some arcs have more required reading than others, and what arcs require said reading along with their publishing order can create a list of standard deviation in which arcs can be moved in adaptation. Yet because of advertising, pacing, or company higher ups, it makes those outlier orders more likely.
If you organize the stories by how they feed into each other, the gap between the structures of monster and off season is made apparent. Because of how musubi is so conclusive the temptation exists to move it to the end of serialization. It does work in the sense of linearity, however it could easily have early off season arcs (like tsubasa sleeping or karen ogre) which connect to it in a more subtle sense, to be thrown off a bit intent wise.
Gaps of time between adaptations can genuinely effect communal response even if it reads better when everything is out.
This is why I think if they had to make shinobumono happen sooner for marketing reasons that after nademono and before musubi wouldn’t the worst time to place it. Its status would parallel the structure of monster season’s remaining books in alternating between an araragi and a Nadeko story, and it would feel like thematically resolute enough to feed into musubi while doing that. The return to the setting post musubi might be a bit awkward (which is the biggest issue with doing that) but I think that the story can handle it.
My other thought is if they wanted to rush the idea and build hype they could try and air princess beauty or acerola bon appetite a bit early. I think it would be better if they waited for waza but if they wanted to push the narrative of Shinobu hype and push other things out of order, they could fairly seamlessly do that here. Solely because of the fact that it wouldn’t throw off schedule too much. Even if it wouldn’t make sense.
For what makes sense generally this is probably the most realistic outcome in my eyes
In my coming reblog I’ll discuss the seemingly sillier concepts I thought while considering this, check the notes if curious about a second half

i talk about this show a lot so i figure i should make one of these:
a brief info dump about the monogatari series so i don’t have to type this all out every time someone asks me about it
the monogatari series is a somewhat long television show and three movies based on a book series written by mystery writer Nisioisin. the adaptation was animated by Shaft, better known for animating puella magi madoka magica.
the monogatari series is a heavily stylized surreal urban fantasy series presented by an unreliable narrator and told in achronological order. it has weirdly good queer and plural representation, especially for the time. its primary focus is on exploring the various traumas of the main cast of suburban teenagers through fantastical elements in a way that never comes across as minimizing their struggles the way that sort of thing usually does. in fact, it has some of the best character writing and depictions of mental illness i’ve ever seen. whether or not the fantastical elements really exist or are the products of the narrator’s imagination is left intentionally ambiguous. if i were more incurious, i would describe this show as “pretentious”.
the monogatari series has a reputation. this reputation is largely inaccurate, however i would not recommend it to someone who is not an adult. the show covers a lot of mature and/or taboo topics, some more gracefully than others. it’s pretty horny, yes, but try to roll with it. the show certainly isn’t for everyone, but it’s for me, and it might be for you too.
i would generally advise against watching the show in the order it aired in, and instead recommend watching it in the same order the novels were published in. if you want to watch it, i recommend [MTBB]’s release on the cat website.
#monogatari series#if i had more time i would have written a shorter letter but this will do for now

Out of interest, have you ever read any of the stuff NISIOISIN wrote as a spin-off for a pre-existing property, like Death Note Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murders, xxxHOLiC: AnotherHOLiC or Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Over Heaven?
i've read all of them!
i'm not a Death Note fan, so a lot of the appeal behind Another Note would be lost on me, but i thought it was an entirely enjoyable Nisioisin mystery. it's a bit on the mundane side, but the names make up for it
i'm a big fan of AnotherHOLiC. it was written just before Nisioisin began publishing Monogatari, and you can absolutely see it as the blueprint for what Bake would become, especially the first three arcs. the stories themselves are fun, and in the week after i read it, i read all of xxxHolic, which i loved even more
Over Heaven is a book Nisioisin was born to write. the way he gets into the head of Dio and crafts the inner workings of this absolute bastard. it's a novel so well suited for Nisoisin's style that it's practically a perfect pairing. as a pretty big JoJo's fan, i also like how it fleshes Dio out and gives more depth to the background of Stone Ocean
