Hello outer-space anon! As a treat you get a little peek at something different I'm currently working on.

The little screaming fellow is a Chestnut-eared aracari. I love their wild bill patterning. The bigger bird is a Rufous-necked hornbill. The males have those rufous necks, this is a female who are all black. They too have the most wonderful bill markings.

Also say hi to some cardinal and black neon tetras.

Toucans or Not?

The Aracari is actually a toucan and a medium-sized bird. This is one of 12 species in the genera. The Chestnut-eared Aracari is also said to be friendly and enjoy human company.

Today, the sun was very harsh most of the time, so much so that the cage wire mesh was very much visible and distracting. The combination of a slow lens and a smaller sensor also meant generous depth-of-field which was a bit too much for this sort of scenario. So, quite a bit of ‘burning’ was needed in post to tone down the intrusive screen.

Chestnut-eared aracari (Pteroglossus castanotis)

The chestnut-eared aracari is a bird native to central and south-eastern South America. It belongs to the toucan and aracari family (Ramphastidae). Like others in the genus Pteroglossus, its diet mainly consists of fruit taken from trees in the area, sometimes retrieved by hanging upside-down. The chestnut-eared aracari also may include flower nectar, insects, and nuts in its diet as well.

Although its cage was made of thin wire mesh, light hitting these had still produced a distracting white screen over the aracari.

So some ‘burning’ was needed over areas around the bird. Highlights and shadows were then pulled back and the contrast tweaked. Reds and yellows were also toned down a bit.
