Companies Give Worker Training Another Try
A tight labour market forces businesses to spend more to develop their employees’ skills
Economists love worker training, but companies are often reluctant to provide it. The benefits of training can walk out the door if newly skilled workers are poached by a competitor. “I call it the ‘I drink your milkshake’ problem,” says Jake Schwartz, chief executive officer and co-founder of General Assembly, a computer-coding boot camp acquired this year by Switzerland-based staffing firm Adecco Group AG. In the years before the global financial crisis, companies steadily decreased training. The U.S. Census Bureau found that just 11 percent of workers received employer-sponsored training in 2008, down from 19 percent in 1996. When the financial crisis hit, throwing millions out of work, training seemed less important than ever: Why spend the money when you can pick up the skills you need from the bountiful ranks of the jobless?
Now, though, corporate attitudes appear to be shifting, albeit gradually. While the Census Bureau hasn’t reprised its count of employer-provided training since 2008, the Association for Talent Development, in a survey focused mainly on advanced economies, found that direct training expenditures rose from $1,081 per employee in 2009 (the first year of the survey) to $1,273 in 2016. The U.S. ranks near the top of the global heap, with 66 percent of workers receiving training from employers in the past year, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (see chart).
Near-record-low unemployment is one big reason companies are recommiting to training. With a U.S. jobless rate of just 3.7 percent in September and more than 7 million unfilled positions as of August, employers can’t find the people they need in the ranks of the jobless, and luring them away from other employers has gotten prohibitively expensive in some cases. “Your choice is always make or buy. ‘Buy’ is steal somebody else’s worker, which requires higher wages,” says Anthony Carnevale, founder and director of Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce.
Fifty-five percent of U.S. employers surveyed by ManpowerGroup this year said they were providing additional training to cope with talent shortages, followed by 40 percent who said they were recruiting outside their traditional talent pool. Only 26 percent said they were offering higher salaries.
Rapidly changing job requirements also demand more training. Just a few years ago experts were predicting that computers and robots would soon make flesh-and-blood workers obsolete. Someday, perhaps, but for now the main effect of automation has been to force humans to develop new skills to work with intelligent machines, rather than for them. “All of a sudden you look up and you say, ‘Oh, we still do need workers,’ ” says Jacob Duritsky, vice president for strategy and research at Team NEO, an economic development organisation for northeastern Ohio.
Employers are discovering that becoming a learning organisation is a good way to fend off headhunters. Especially now, with change happening so quickly, workers will stick with a company that helps them continuously upgrade their skills, says Bill Priemer, CEO of Hyland Software Inc. in Westlake, Ohio. In a survey this year by LinkedIn Inc., 94 percent of employees said they would stay at a company longer if it invested in their career development.
That’s not to say all training is good. A lot of employers teach “tightly specified, highly standardised tasks” that will soon be taken over by computers, says John Hagel, co-chairman of the Center for the Edge, a unit of Deloitte LLP that researches business and technology. Hagel says companies should instead be drawing out employees’ “curiosity, imagination, creativity, emotional intelligence, social intelligence,” which are harder for machines to replicate.
There’s also a tussle over who should do the training: employers or schools. Community colleges are often willing to tailor curricula to employers’ needs, but even they balk at teaching specific tasks that will be useful to just one or two businesses. Executives, meanwhile, complain that the U.S. educational system is pumping out unqualified graduates. In a recent survey of OECD nations, U.S. millennials scored lower than their peers in 15 of 22 countries in literacy and were tied for last in numeracy and “problem solving in a technology-rich environment,” according to an analysis of the results by the Educational Testing Service. Employers often have to provide remedial training for entry-level workers in areas such as basic math.
Because worker training benefits the society as a whole, not just the individual employer, there’s an economic case that government should provide it directly or at least subsidise it. Yet in the U.S., public spending on labour markets (which includes unemployment benefits) has fallen from 0.8 percent of gross domestic product in 1985 to 0.3 percent in 2016, according to OECD data. In July, President Trump signed an executive order creating a Council of the American Worker and directing funds to apprenticeships and retraining for older workers without college degrees. On the other hand, the current administration sought—but failed to secure—a 40 percent cut in funding for the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, the biggest federal worker retraining programme. Achieving the right balance between public and private is tricky. Thijs van Rens, an economist at Britain’s University of Warwick, says his research with colleague Roland Rathelot and others finds that public funding for training is largely a giveaway to employers. Singapore offers a model of how to combine the two. It subsidises qualifying companies that provide training through its new SkillsFuture initiative, but the grants don’t cover the full cost. That discourages companies from offering sham training just to get money from the government.
Anna Lim, the founder and majority owner of Soup Spoon Pte, which owns 30 restaurants in Singapore, says she had to have her instructors certified and her training results regularly audited to get SkillsFuture to pick up part of the tab. Does she worry that other companies that don’t train will free-ride on her investment? Not much. “In Singapore right now we have stopped thinking like that,” she says. “At the end of the day it’s about uplifting the skill set of the whole industry. We have to be broad-minded.” To upgrade the world’s workforce for the skills of the future, the ideal environment is what economists call a high-trust equilibrium: Each employer invests in training because it’s confident others will do likewise. Luxury describes this sizably voluminous structure Hotel Sayaji which is one of the masterpiece in Saurashtra region in Gujarat designed by Architect Ishwar Gehi. This new luxurious space is designed for the community where visitors of all kinds – hotel guests and the general public – experience Royal yet Contemporary culture, while making it.
The site is located in one of the plush areas of Rajkot. On the east, west, and south we have an open plot and on the north side, we have a residential area which is the close proximity of the site.
The client brief was to have a very luxurious hotel. Hence the planning was done in such a way that the design should offer more luxury to the people and meet the desiderata of the people visiting.
The exterior façade of the hotel is designed uniquely in a roof pattern. The ingression canopy is an astronomically immense of about forty feet in height with a unique play of roof. The vertical LED strips in the façade enlighten the area during the dusk.
The Rajkot lies on 128m above sea level. The climate in Rajkot is referred to as a local steppe climate. There is not much rainfall in Rajkot all year long. In Rajkot, the average annual temperature is 26.7 °C | 80.1 °F. Hence the utilization of louvers is done in the exterior facade on the west side for protection from harsh sun rays and for privacy. Ample usage of plantation viz, Date-palm trees, Champa, Fiscus Panda is done to keep maintain the temperature. The design of the hotel was done to have eight floors.
The ground floor is designed to have two Banquet Halls viz Sapphire and Mahal, party lawn area, swimming pool, coffee shop, kitchen, wine shop. The wine shop has separate ingression from the ground floor.
The Sapphire banquet is designed in highly contemporary style which sets the mood right and spirits high to up the game altogether with extravaganza and opulence. The adorned hanging lights in the shape of umbrella steals the show complementing grey and white “ Gallicha” tiles. Here the private seating is partitioned with double scaled brick arches sanctioning one to relish the privacy.
The Mahal Banquet cumulates elegance and royalty, luxurious, and multifunctional contemporary spaces that can host a huge mob making ideal for any event. Mirrors, the unsung hero’s of the embellishment, making the area more spacious. The customized royal gold finish chandeliers have become a mark of supreme luxury and flamboyance, creating a royal effect.
There is an immensely colossal Party lawn area on the ground floor, extending its arms and welcomes you for a wide, open-air space to celebrate your big day.
Designed to embrace the privacy the pool adjacent to the banquet is designed for tranquility and relaxation. This Pool beckons its guest with its mesmerizing mosaic of blue, and the Buddha enhancing the placidity of the area. The green lush here sanctions, maintaining the temperature of the astringent sunrays of Rajkot city.
The cafeteria overlooking the swimming pool designed to have exposed concrete ceiling, informal designs, wooden finished tiles provides a warm and rustic interior escape from the hustle and bustle.
As we move further to the first floor we have an exorbitant reception area. The vibrant colors, artifacts, sofas, and comely lamps hung from the roof, the central water pot has played a vital role to keep the royalty of the space intact. Since the reception area is the focal point, Architect Ishwar Gehi has endeavored to bring out a striking balance between the design and functionality.
On the second floor there are two uniquely designed restaurants on the left side we have the “Horizon “restaurant and on the right side we have the “Craving” Restaurant.
Horizon restaurant offers a dramatic atmosphere in the interior by utilizing natural bamboo, forming spaces to dining and sitting. There is a utilization of around 15,000 bamboos’, which has broken the boundaries by cumulating the nature with the innovative use of material. Architect Ishwar Gehi has applied natural bamboo to space ingeniously in combination with “A” class bricks, the finest finished bricks allowing a play of shadow and light.
It sparkles, and no wonder the glasses hung from the ceiling in the Craving restaurant has illuminated the space in a dramatic way. The customized five feet heightened glasses in blue-green & red are exclusively designed in the kitchen area of the restaurant is an attention grabber. The combination of red, yellow black & maroon and artifacts on the wall has made the space genial.
Both the restaurants are connected to the open kitchen and both the kitchen is connected via the service corridor. The services in the hotel have been centralized: the service lift, service staircase, housekeeping areas, storeroom form the core of the hotel structure making them facile access from all the major areas.
Not quite indoors, not quite outdoors, open-air eateries are an idyllic place to relish the gorgeous weather. This chick open space restaurant is designed to have a water body disuniting both the areas and maintaining a pleasant mood along with the green around. An intriguing installation of solar lights in the area, which absorbs the daylight and illuminated during the dusk time. One can have a view of the entire hotel from here.
The suite room is vibrant and spacious having an ingress foyer, a minuscule living room, bedroom and luxurious bathroom with a Jacucci and dressing area.
The premium grand room occupies its place on the third, fourth, fifth, and the seventh floor.
The Presidential rooms are very royal and luxurious which are sizably voluminous in size offers a blissful relaxation stay.
The connecting corridor’s/ passages have their own comeliness with the flooring done in leather finished yellow travertine Italian marble.
The Yellow and the woods on the third floor welcomes with warmth with lamps on the wall illuminating the space. The passage on the seventh floor is intriguingly designed with customized lamps with sittings sanctioned for one to repose while traveling.
The eight-floor has a royal touch with siting designed in “ Maharaja style”. The colossal wall clock and artifacts hung, Silver and copper lamps, designer tiles has dramatically changed the view of the area.
This beauty doesn’t skimp on style and offers the discerning travellers some serious lux.

Getting Started
A blog that relates to my issue is http://zsl-edge-of-existence.tumblr.com/. The subject of the blog is the preservation of Earth’s most unique and diverse animals. The authors are from the Zoological Society of London project. The context is awareness of animals that are on the brink of extinction. The intended audience is people who want to learn about endangered species that aren’t well known and people who want to help. The authors believe that these animals need more conservation programs dedicated to them and that we need to create more awareness about these animals. The significance of the blog is to raise awareness and determine how threatened these species are. I agree with this blog because there’s a lot of rare, unique endangered species that people don’t ever hear about and I think people need to be more aware of that.

The electronics sector has found a way to thrive amid the global pandemic, with 5G demand helping the industry remain a rare catalyst for Asian factories.
South Korean computer sales surged 107% in August and semiconductor shipments grew for a third month in the past four, even as smartphone sales declined and overall exports fell 9.9% from a year earlier, figures out Sept 1 showed.
Taiwan’s manufacturing output rose 2.6% in July, while production of computers and integrated circuits climbed by double digits. Shipments of electronics products from Singapore rose in July for a third straight month.
The latest data bolster forecasts that this year’s electronics rebound will persist, even as a US ban on Huawei Technologies Co, further US-China trade tensions and an eventual tapering of demand for work-from-home equipment present obstacles for the industry.
Relentless demand for 5G-related applications, including infrastructure and smartphones, is poised to keep electronics production humming as other output struggles to recover from the pandemic. Even the latest technology bans on Huawei look to be just a stumbling block.
“It’s kind of a little bit of a bump,” Rajan Rajgopal, chief executive officer of Singapore-based DenseLight Semiconductors Pte, said in an Aug 28 interview.
Two areas of business especially have been booming since before the pandemic: data centres and 5G infrastructure, said Rajgopal, who’s worked in semiconductors for about 25 years. China accounts for about half of DenseLight’s customer base and could take an increasing share as it builds out its next-generation wireless infrastructure across the country – boosting demand for semiconductors that go into devices as diverse as street cameras and oil-pipeline sensors.
Global semiconductor industry revenue is set to slip by only 0.9% this year to US$415.4bil (RM1.7 trillion) amid pandemic-related disruptions, according to Gartner Inc estimates.
Still, significant risk factors are keeping electronics watchers on guard. US President Donald Trump’s potential re-election in November could mean more headaches for Asian supply chains, while it’s unclear how his rival for the White House, former Vice President Joe Biden, would alter US strategy toward China. And retailers across sectors are bracing for a holiday season that could disappoint if government stimulus wears off and labour markets worsen.
For now, though, companies expect the electronics boom to overcome the risks – with Taiwanese firms seeing themselves particularly well-placed to ride out the storm. Industry giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co is charting a “PC resurgence” amid Covid-19, CC Tsai, senior director of the company’s Asia-Pacific business, said in a video for a company symposium Aug 25.
Despite concerns that increased work-from-home orders for things like laptops and webcams would prove temporary, computer demand “continues to remain robust”, and many consumers spending more time at home are also upgrading their television sets, Chairman Fang Leuh of Vanguard International Semiconductor Corp, a TSMC affiliate that specialises in power management chips and display driver chips, told reporters Aug 29.
That matches the read of Quanta Computer Inc, which makes Apple Inc MacBooks, HP Inc notebooks and servers for Amazon.com Inc’s AWS and Google. Elton Yang, chief financial officer of Taiwan-based Quanta, says notebook shipments are expected to grow by double digits in the third quarter.
“Strong orders from our customers confirm shelter-in-place demand is long-term,” Quanta Chairman Barry Lam told reporters Aug 13. “We will create more products for the shelter-in-place economy to optimise our profitability. This is a big change. We will grab it and gain better opportunities.”
Industry executives acknowledge greater uncertainties around the trade war, US elections and Covid-19, while taking a longer view on the prospects for electronics.
Apple, for example, has asked suppliers to build at least 75 million 5G iPhones for later this year – roughly in line with last year’s launch – a sign that demand for the company’s most important product is holding up despite the pandemic and recession.
Vanguard’s Fang emphasised very strong demand into 2021 for the type of semiconductors his company makes, aided by rollout of 5G technologies. And even if Trump wins another four-year term, complicating DenseLight’s China business, Rajgopal sees a brighter outlook.
“The electronics industry is a lot more resilient than eight years,” he said. – Bloomberg
