Table
The second fully lucid time she awoke faired much better, she turned her head to get a better sense of her surroundings and instead was met with bright golden eyes and a wide toothy smile. This young manâs gaze came over the top edge of the book he was reading, the pages holding faded brown tinted edges â an old tome. As her own eyes never left his, his drifted back down to the page as he took a heartily sip from the cup in his hand.
Licking the remnants off his lips as the cup made its way back to the obvious ring on the wooden side table. A groove that showed that mug was in its rightful home when not being pressed against a set of full lips.
â...and such a man is nothing more than that; a man. His breath caressed the very skin, leaving a trail of goosefleshââ
âAnd she had realized sheâd want for not. His very promises whispered into the down on her body.â She paused, struggling to fill her lungs, it felt as if she had spent time buried under a crushing force, cold as if she had fallen down a treewell on her fatherâs lands. âPlease donât tell me that I have been kidnapped and your idea of torture is reading the horrendous romance that was written by Mother Instran herself.â
A laugh, deep and rich. âWell I thought with how it bores me to death that it would bore you anytime you started to wake.â
âYou sound like you enjoy doing this.â
âI happily do it as my father asks, including dragging you back up on the table to rest after you roll off in a fit. Smacked my father a few times you did.â Resting the now closed book against his thigh crossed over the other, âheâs a doctor, one of the best youâll find here for now.â
âHow?â She remembered leaving the small town, she rememberedâ oh, oh no. Brahm. Chandra. Naveen. They must be worried. âHow long have I been?â Her hands flittered through the air, trying to grab for words around her jarring headache, she took note of her blistered fingers.
A day and a half at the most.
Her mouth moved, indistinguishable words, but it was clear what she did when a slow creeping smile appeared. âYou mumbled about it not being something you can control, but donât worry, weââ
âVaryn, your fatherâs patient should be resting.â
âSorry, mother dearest, I stopped reading and she woke up. I told you all that this drivel is better than any anesthetic father could administer.â The heavy tome was lifted as a pair of menâs trousers came into view, brown eyes lifted along the fabric until the woman bent in half to meet her gaze. There was no white visible in her cornflower eyes, but the light hit them in a way that for a small second Rashka swore there was something reflective about them. Hair a close shade to the heather flowers was neatly folded into many braids that were then folded together themselves.
Ears twitched on top of her head, covered in hair like fur the same shade.
âHello,â her voice was melodic, soft and soothing. âArenât you a strange little thing, my Varyn found you out in the woods, dangerous to be in after sundown. I am Psydora, my husband is Wystan. We are the Xarez family.â
Xarez family. Her head lifted from the table in surprise.
So you know of us.
Stop! Please, my head. Rashka answers the unspoken words, the baritone of it rumbling in her head much louder than what he had spoken previously. âYouâre not Fae, or Vampyre.â Her breath rasped between her teeth as she tried to speak around the pain.
âNo,â a nod of that perfectly round face toward the man in the chair before he leaned forward and pressed just the tip of his finger between her brows.

Thought
âAnd they emerge for sustenance and we can continue our journey,â Chandra rolled her eyes, plate outstretched. Brahm is the first to take it before turning to hand it to her, Rashka loads it up with the meat and boiled eggs on the table, taking a slice of bread that she is handed.
She knew, more from the tension that hung heavy in the air than the thoughts swirling around. They knew that the two were sharing a bed, though they hadnât been subtle, no point in it.
Not that it mattered when she knew that the second she was released into her parentâs custody would she rarely see the Hunter, might as well have fun on her travels.Â
You stink.
Her head snapped up and she had never been more thankful that the others were preoccupied stuffing their faces to see the shock settle on her face as Varynâs head remained down towards his plate, though from the set of his shoulders he was trying to not laugh at the expression on her face.
That is how they know, not because you two are loud, and Rosh you are very loud. Mentally and verbally, just so you know.
Iâ what.
What do you mean âwhatâ you smell like Brahm, and he smells like you. Though you more than him because you keep feeding off him. Which by the way is very taboo in their culture just so you know. Letting bloodsuckers such as youâ eat youâre attracting attention just staring at the top of my head.
Sure enough Brahm noticed, leaning into her to nudge her with his shoulder, eyes on her plate. A small worry that no matter how long she had been traveling with them that food such as this would bother her.
Bastard. She tore into the meat a little confused. It was a step up from rabbit but what was it?
Welcome to the joys of heavily seasoned beef, humans heavily spice everything thinking it will cause the otherworldly to react. Sometimes too much is bad but here itâs not bad, not good but not bad.
A chuckle from the man next to her as he reaches to pour her a glass of wine, âhumans love to believe that spices keep the demons away. The meat is spiced more than normal because they thinkâ while itâs trueâ they want to test our humanness. Well between our ears, but they arenât as scared of the Fae so we are forgiven. You however are not.â
Oh, she stole a glance at Varyn who raised a brow and slowly nodded at her plate.
They believe someone as beautiful as you is here to seduce their men and eat the souls of their children. They are also worried for the Hunter you pull into your bed every night, since they had stuck us into a room together.

Time
The first couple of hours into their trip was quiet, quiet in the way that Brahm would tell jokes with his companions that werenât her. Chandra would fall back, bow strapped to her back nearly hitting Rashka with it when the former leaned into her to speak. It would just be to check in, see how she was doing and then sheâd pull away to either flank her horse or trot up to her brother.
Having nothing to do she began to take note of her surroundings, the different trees that grew on the edge of the swamplands theyâd have to cross through. The fauna and flora are ever changing, each one more beautiful and unique than she had ever seen.
She acts like sheâs never been outside before.
Letting her eyes drop from where they were excitedly taking in the reeds lining the marsh at the mental comment from the travelers they had crossed. She had taken up a perch on an outcropping of rock to rest as they took up bargaining with the traveling merchant that the couple were also speaking with.
The merchant had thought of her several times also, too human in nature, believing that the vial of rowan ash around his neck would protect him from the Fae currently in his company. Fairy Tales told at bedtime to make them feel better even though the said Fae he was trying to swindle were trained to use their fists to survive. His thoughts were dirty, some explicit in nature, other grotesque in the way that he could sell bits of her if he wanted to make more than a pretty bronzer for his wallet. Her stomach would roll whenever his thoughts came back to her, too loud for her to even try to shut them out. Each one though never clued in on how she was more dangerous than him.
Before they left Florence had one task, make her as discreet as possible, while having no weapons she was dressed in an almost similar fashion as her companions. While not having actual Hunting gear on like them she was in trousers and a borrowed shirt that laced at the neck. Thankful for the long sleeves that hid her healing bruises. âIt would take awhile for them to fully disappear, your body is getting used to having a full blood supply for nourishment.â
Rashka had simply looked at the other Vampyre, it was then that she learned for herself that there was much that her Counsul didnât grasp, how lacking the Fae were to her people when in reality her people were underdeveloped.
Hips are good for bearing babies. Beautiful too. Fae bastards always get the pretty ones.
Resting her head on her knees she glowered at the merchant, then at the whispering couple who would shoot glances in her direction. There was no need to struggle with prying into their thoughts about her, she was listening all too intently after their critique of her curiosity, since they couldnât keep their mouths closed their thoughts were just as easy.
âHey,â legs came into view and when he stopped Brahm crossed one boot over the other to rest his right toes on the ground. The stance screamed leisure but the tightening of his jaw as he looked at the whispering couple, who then took turns assessing him standing next to her, said otherwise. âYou wanna come look at anything? See if thereâs something you like?â
âFor what? What could he possibly have?â She was tense once more, if not just as tense as he tried not to be.
âHe has stuff for sââ looking back at the merchant then her out of the corner of his eyes, a thoughtful smile pulls his lips out of a pursed pucker. âWeâre gonna wrap it up and then get on the road. Hopefully we can reach Wynser by nightfall tomorrow.â

Twitch
(WARNING GORE)
That thin line was still there once the woman had cleaned the table and they all stood down in the kitchens, Rashka shivered a little in her soaked dress. She spent the time trying to console the shaking woman, why was she shivering?
âYou, come here.â Klaas stood next to the counter, face blank minus that tight mouth. âCome, now!â
The woman nodded and flinched as she passed a guard who seemed to only want to stand at the foot of the stairs. The rest of the staff stood, faces all grim, over spilled water?
âKlaas?â Rashkaâs hands tightened as Marjorie walked in, eyes down turned as she shakingly held out a cleaver. âWhat is going on?â
The princess was hushed, a guard next to her tightening his hold around her wrist as the now silently crying woman stood next to the Lord of the house. One hand held the cleaver and the other placed her right hand on the counter. As soon as the cleaver raised and as Rashka understood what was happening did it arch through the air and come down on the shaking womanâs wrist. It severed through the joint, muscle, and tendon. Blood quickly pooled as the twitching body part stayed on the counter as Klaas pulled the woman away, blood soaking her front. One of his thumbs reached up to swipe the blood on his own face, he didnât look at it as he stuck the digit into his mouth.
âHave her taken to the stables. Iâm sure a night in one of the stalls will do her good.â
