3e: Psychofeedback

In game making we’re often talking about feedback loops. That is the idea that when something happens, in a process, it influences that same process the next time it happens. Feedback in audio is a problem you want to avoid. Feedback in marketing is something you want endlessly so you can always make a new excuse for why you need more feedback before committing to an optimal strategy. Feedback is everywhere in every interaction because if you weren’t getting feedback, you weren’t interacting.

TTRPGs are in many cases built on feedback. In most story-run games, ie, anything with what we call a DM or GM interchangeably unless you’re really persnickety about rules language, the game is fundamentally a feedback loop where that story-runner provides a stimulis and the players respond to and incorporate that feedback. Feedback is not a problem, feedback is the whole experience.

That’s not what this is about.

This is about a single specific power in 3e D&D, called Psychofeedback, which was so broken I may have gotten it errata’d.

The rules system is 3rd edition Dungeons & Dragons. The book is Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Psionics Handbook by Bruce Cordell and I assume a lot of other people. In this book, we have the power Psychofeedback, and since you’re not in a position to get this book, here’s the relevant rules text, verbatim:

You can use power points to boost your Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution modifiers as a free action. While the duration lasts, you can use power points on a round-by-round basis to boost any or all of your ability score modifiers (not the actual ability score) by a number equal to half the power points you expend for that round as a free action. For example, you can boost your Strength modifier by as much as 8 points (if you spend 16 power points).

That’s the important rules information. It lets you convert psionic power points to stat modifier at a 2:1 rate. Note that it’s not converting to stat points, but to stat modifier. Now, this means you don’t change things like your strength score (relevant for carrying capacity) but your strength modifier (relevant for single acts of strength like breaking objects or attacking people). This was a level 4 power, available for a Psion at level 8, or Psychic Warrior at level 10. It was also, largely, a completely unusable power, as designed, because the conversion rate didn’t really work out very well. It could be useful for a short burst of strength, but you couldn’t, for example, use it to temporarily inflate your hit points, because when your Constitution decreased, you’d lose those hit points you gained first. You could ge tougher, but you’d have to stay spending power points until you were healed. Neat effect but not amazing.

Interesting power, no real application.

Except.

In the same book we have the Mind Feeder weapon property. By level 8-10, it’s very reasonable to expect a character to have access to this weapon, whose rules state:

A mindfeeder weapon grants its wielder temporary power points equal to the total damage dealt by a successful critical hit.

How often do you get critical hits?

In this case, using core rules available items, a scimitar crits on 3 numbers (18, 19, 20). With improved critical, it crits on 6 numbers (adding 15, 16, 17). With Sharpness, it crits on 8 numbers (adding 14 and 13). That means that a mindfeeder weapon could critically hit just under half the time. What this could lead to was a character who dual-wielded small weapons like these and made five attacks a turn at level 10 (because of ubiquitous buff haste).

You can open with a Psychofeedback buff to your attack of, at that level, 26 power points, all you had. That means +13 to your strength modifier, meaning your attack would do something in the district of 1d4+your strength+magical mods+that extra 13 strength. There’s also this feat from the Player’s Handbook called power attack. Power attack let you exchange a penalty on hit for a bonus to your damage rolls. Remember how you spent those 26 power points for a +13 strength modifier? You have therefore, a +13 extra to hit. So without needing to change how likely you are to hit, you’re suddenly getting another +13 extra damage on that attack.

Now double it.

That meant that your first crit, which cost you 26 power points, is going to be like 2.5 dice-roll damage, +1 from the magical weapon, probably, +2 from a totally reasonable base strength mod, +13 from the new strength mod, +13 from power attack, doubled. That’s 63 power points. The next turn, you can turn those 63 power points into strength, for a +31 strength mod. Critting in that turn on five attacks is very reasonably likely, and that gets you 135 power points back. And that’s +67 Strength modifier. That would be equivalent to a strength of 145. While this is going on, your character is stronger than multiple gods of strength, combined.

You have ten rounds to do this, and every single high roll pushes you further ahead. And this is the thing at start; you don’t need to go much further for the wheels to come off this very fast. And this is level ten where you don’t have a lot of ways to build for ridiculous recovery, or forcing more chances to critically hit. Remember, this is a game system that’s meant to scale up past level 20 infinitely!

This is dumb. It’s also 3rd edition so you can even be mobile and do this, haste letting you make a partial charge to close on a new subject and then ginsu it with your full attack. But hey, at least those power points are temporary, so you can’t just spend all your time doing this in every encounter, right? At least you’re not ending every fight on full power points, after having a strength stat somewhere in the triple digits at some point, Right?

Normally with these balance problems in the sprawling game system that is Dungeons & Dragons the problem is the intersection of systemic components that were not designed to necessarily know about one another. It’s usually about using parts from two different books, brought together in a way that resulted in something unintentionally powerful. This is different. This is using two things from the same book whose application to one another seems to be pretty reasonably obvious. This is almost as egregious as the problem of the Spelldancer, another 3e all-star with an internal feedback loop that worked with its own features in the most obvious way.

See, the thing is, now Psychofeedback says ‘temporary’ power points. When the book was new, it didn’t say temporary. It didn’t say that and I wrote a treatment on it for the Character Optimisation board showing how the whole thing broke with core material only, and then one of the website writers for the book showed up in the thread and said ‘oh, that shouldn’t work that way.’

Then we got an online errata for the rulebook, and then in the next edition of the book the rule was changed.

Funguary Feb 9 - Silver Leaf Fungus - Ipos

Ipos is an Earl and powerful Duke of Hell who has thirty-six legions of demons under his command. He knows and can reveal all things, past, present and future . He can make humans who summon him witty and valiant. He is commonly associated with both the goose and the lion.

On the other hand, the Daemonic Silver Leaf Fungus is roughly the size of a barnyard gander and is mostly associated with excessive screeching and a tendency to get it's head stuck in commercially designed feeders. Some fanciers have started trying to breed them in patterns such as the Flemish and the Canadian, but with small success. The Daemonic Silver Leaf Fungus feeds on clothing fragments and the psychic energy of causing bruises through nipping.

that question about drowzee & hypno and their supposed penchant for kidnapping reminded me of another pokemon with a bad rap- drifloon, and all the misconceptions surrounding it.

you're almost certainly familiar with drifloon's supposed habit of whisking children away- you might even be able to point to a few news stories outlining those exact sort of events. many people say that drifloon like to drag kids away to the afterlife, or to eat their soul or whatever.

and honestly- there is some truth to these stories. there are a fair amount of concrete, well-founded accounts of drifloon leading kids away from parks or out of backyards or playgrounds, who are later found deceased or badly injured, or rarely never found at all.

but that's where the truth of it ends. for one, drifloon aren't really able to drag anyone away by force like some believe. drifloon are extremely passive in terms of locomotion, unable to put much force behind their movements and being blown away by stiff breezes, they wouldn't be able to generate the force needed to lift more than, like, a newborn baby, let alone a school-aged child.

secondly, drifloon really have no reason to be leading people away. it isn't a predatory behavior, drifloon aren't active predators for anything more than tiny flying (mostly non-pokemon) insects. they're very energy efficient, passive feeders, going wherever the wind blows and grabbing small insects that wander (or are blown) too close with their tendrils. additionally, there's no evidence they feed on psychic/spiritual energy like some ghost pokemon (ie litwick), so there's zero reason for them to take anyone away in the first place.

so then, how do we explain the deaths and disappearances related to drifloon? its worth noting that such events are very uncommon, despite the fact that drifloon are found in almost every corner of the globe (and have been going down since these stories have become more widely-told). what's far more common are cases of kids being missing for only a few minutes to a couple hours, being found, unharmed, playing with drifloon nearby from where they disappeared from.

what's happening here is that drifloon, like many smaller pokemon, are playful, and view humans (especially kids more their size) as potential friends. so, they'll wander into parks or playgrounds where kids are playing. but drifloon aren't people, and they don't really understand things like "kids need to stay in the playground and not wander off" or "forests, rough terrain, and cliffy areas can be dangerous for people, who cannot float". an unsupervised child might wander off with their newfound friend (as many kids are prone to doing) and inadvertently into danger, whether that means aggressive wild pokemon, or falls off of ledges. to lend credence to this, there was a case a few years ago of a child who disappeared from a park in paldea following a drifloon, and was found injured soon after- because the drifloon that had befriended them had gone to find help, and led rescuers to the child's location.

the overall point is that these pokemon aren't malicious or evil, and they don't mean to bring anyone harm. it's okay for kids to play with drifloon, they can even make good companions with easy care needs, but keep a close eye on your kids, and make sure they know to be aware of their surroundings for potential danger and not to leave the backyard, park, or playground where they're supposed to be. there are also plenty of guardian pokemon which can be taught these boundaries and prevent kids from walking into danger.

Strauss sullenly folded himself back into the grimy front seat of the “borrowed” pickup. The fresh night air had cleared his system, and now coming back to the cloud of tobacco smell that emanated from the vehicle was just about making him retch. How did he put up with this earlier?

Maybe it was just that the adrenaline had worn off. Sylvain crumpled her face in a stark sneer as she hoisted herself into the driver’s seat. She apparently was not pleased by the smell either.

“So. Got any special requests?” She asked as she fastened her seat belt.

“Requests?”

“For dinner.”

“Ah.” Strauss looked down and away. “I only know of one establishment that has feeder mice, and I am quite certain I am banned from the premises.”

“I was hoping to get an answer like “a young virgin” or something more normal for a vampire. But you’re right, we’re going to have to avoid anywhere you could be recognized. Especially after that little incident.”

“Incident? So you know about what happened at the pet store?”

“Buddy, the entire town knows. You think people don’t talk? People won’t shut up about you. Despite my best efforts, I may add.”

“Best efforts- wait.” Strauss turned to Sylvain with a harsh stare. “What, exactly, were your best efforts?”

“Back off Strauss.” Sylvain flashed her teeth in warning. “Relax, nobody died. I considered it, but it was already too late for that to help. You already know my persuasive psychic talents are, shall we say, more developed than most. I did a little test to see just how developed. That’s all.”

“What have you done?”

“I tried to wipe a few memories.” She shrugged, and put the car in gear and slowly ambled down the drive and back to the main road.

“I started with the girl at the pet store. She was the epicenter of most of the rumors anyway. I persuaded her to forget. I had to keep visiting her. Checking up. Seeing if it worked. Seeing if it would come back.”

“Did it?”

“It always did.” She grumbled. “It would work for a while, but she was too close to the action to just let it go. Then she started getting bold, remembering me, trying to record me… I had to give up on that one.”

“I’m surprised you didn’t make an end of her.”

“Oh, believe me, I wanted to. But she’d already talked, and if she died after that, the conspiracy would only escalate. I had to focus on whoever she talked to. They were easier to convince. Everyone is already predisposed to thinking you’re some sort of crazy homeless person. I just needed to convince people the eyewitness was crazy too. Easy.”

“Why go through the effort on my behalf? On behalf of the Institute?”

“Cute, you think this was about you.”

The vehicle lurched forward, gaining momentum. Strauss found his hand involuntarily gripping his seat.

“You know damn well that a vampire lives and dies on secrets. When you started pulling bullshit in public, you didn’t just fuck up Artie’s little science project. You put a lot of people at serious risk. Sure, a few people here and there could be bought off. But what about the ones that kept talking, hmm? Do you have any idea how fast conspiracy theories travel online?”

The engine of the tormented pickup whirred with mechanical urgency, the pitch increasing with its speed.

“No, you don’t know that. You’re probably blissfully unaware of how the internet even works. You don’t know that one conspiracy theorist bitching about vampires can become a camp of true believers overnight. You don’t know what a viral video is, you probably didn’t even know there was security footage that the Institute had to buy to cover your ass, did you? And when I came along and started cleaning up your little fuckup, what do you do? You fling yourself into fucking traffic to stop me.”

“Into traffic- you mean to tell me your attempt to kill Mr. Samuel was your misguided attempt to protect vampire kind?”

“The fact that you call it misguided is exactly the fucking problem. As long as he’s alive, he’ll talk. If he talks, he’ll be believed, and if he’s believed then there goes our way of life. Don’t you get that?”

“It sounds more like you’re desperate for reasons to use your strength to harm human beings.”

“Is that what you think?”

“It is. I think you have too much power and no outlet for it. Where you cannot find an outlet, you invent one, and you pretend that the torment of innocent bystanders is justice.”

“Big talk coming from you, when you’re the one who made them bystanders to your carnage in the first place. Only one of us has put their fangs on Mr. Samuel if you recall.”

“Perhaps you should ask him which of us he agrees with.”

WHUMP.

Strauss catapulted from his seat and into the windshield, painfully connecting with his head. A dark cloud came over his vision momentarily, then dispersed.

“What in Hell was that for?” He demanded, sorely rubbing his forehead.

“We got cherries in the rearview, chief.” Sylvain motioned to the mirror, and Strauss realized they were being tailed by a car blazing with lights. They hurt very much to look at.

“I believe that is a police officer.”

“Yeah, we’re getting pulled over.” Sylvain sighed. “Probably because it got reported stolen.”

Strauss sat nervously in his chair. “What are you going to do?”

Sylvain turned to him with a grin. “Try and relax, Lu.”

A fat headed and impatient looking officer approached the window with a flashlight drawn and pointed. It was difficult to aggressively point a light, but somehow or other, he was managing as he carefully approached the truck.

The driver’s window rolled down slowly as he made his way to face the pair of carjackers. “Hey. Ma’am? You’re going pretty fast back there. That’s a forty? Yeah? You were going sixty five. Can I see your driver’s license?”

He was trying to sound authoritarian. His annoyance peaked in his voice as the petite female driver only reacted with a droll smile.

“Hey officer. You got a body cam on?”

“The red light right here indicates that it’s recording, yes ma’am.”

“Turn it off.”

She demanded it. The officer obeyed, and instantly flicked the switch off without a question. Sylvain reached through the window and grabbed the cam and yanked it from the poor fool’s uniform, crushing it in her hand like a rotten peach.

The officer seemed surprised, but didn’t react, except to slowly lower his flashlight and stare blankly, fishlike into the vehicle.

“So Lu, you want this one?”

“Sylvain, no. Let him go.”

“Why? You were just going on about how I was looking for excuses to abuse power and how pissy that made you. Well, nobody is worse about abusing power than cops. Maybe you’d be doing some poor schmucks a favor. Come on, it’s not like you haven’t offed people who deserved it before.”

“Mildly inconveniencing me is not deserving it.”

“Oh he’d do more than that to you, Lu. You’re in a stolen truck. You’re going to jail if you don’t make a decision here, how long do you think you could pretend to be human under strict observation? Or, you could cover your tracks now…”

Strauss looked to the officer, who, despite his stunned silence, was pleading for help with his eyes.

“Sylvain… picking off a cop is stupid even for you.”

“Excuse me?”

“Use your head. There is no death more public than that of a police officer. Surely you understand that. Do you think your camera trick will work for long?”

Sylvain stared shark-like at her companion for some uncomfortable minutes, before cracking a smile and laughing back at him.

“Yes, good. You can be taught.” She turned to the officer with a scowl.

“Get the Hell out of my sight.”

The cop stumbled backwards and fell onto the shoulder. When he found his footing, he ran into the dark, away from the road, and away from his car.

“I’m so proud of you Lu. Using that big beautiful brain to think ahead. Took you long enough.”

“Were you actually going to kill that man?”

“No. If he’s tailing a stolen car, other patrols will be by any minute now. We need to ditch this thing and walk for a bit.”

She kicked open the door and slid to the ground, leaving the truck behind her with doors open and lights on. A beacon for the cops to find and busy themselves with. Strauss followed her lead, trailing behind her slowly as they made their way to the roadside and began to walk.

“We’re going to have to move quick. I can get one cop to fuck off, doing a few at a time is a bit more of a stretch. Unless you wanna help.”

“I will pass, frau Pietra.”

“Well, hurry up. I’ll still need dinner before bed time. I want to have a bit more fun before your handlers turn up for you.”

“What makes you think they will?”

“Probably because they’re tracking you from that smart watch in your pocket.”

Strauss froze. “How… did you know I had that?”

“Not denying it? Smart man. Lu, I was a lead hunter at that institute for years. When I died, there was so much going on, dear Frau Harker didn’t revoke my security clearance. Maybe she forgot, maybe she thought I wasn’t coming back. Maybe, juuuust maybe, she thought she could put me back to work.”

Sylvain looked over her shoulder at Strauss. “I’ve been watching you come and go on GPS for a while now. I’m jealous, you know? They’re more open with you than they were with me. It’s kind of funny.”

“What are you going to do to me?”

“For now, nothing. As long as you stay polite. Maybe I’ll hang out long enough to have a little reunion when security turns up. I have some folks that I’m sure are dying to see me.”

Disclaimer: I’ve never been a member as participation was at its peak around the 2000s and got really sparse after the 2010s. It’s both a real-life vampire forum and an otherkin forum; really interesting to see how these communities worked in tandem at the time. There’s not a particular psychic vs. sang bias; both are viewed as real and respected. Topics range from medical safety for blood-feeders to psychic protection to community chatter about identity.

Ceremorphosis and Fleshcraft

A god died above The Wandering Isles, when it was still a continent, pre-calamity. If you're a learned scholar you'll know ov the events of the 3rd Trial of Heaven, and the god that was slain.

When the gods body fell, it crashed into the ocean, above the grave it dug itself. It's body sunk into the ocean, through the deepest part and into the Black Sea within the underdark.

Its unhallowed flesh fell to the very bottom of the plane, and fell upon the hole that the god had opened. Sealing it for good.

The elder brain became the brain of a god, and the cult of the drowned had begun. Over the following years, the cult expanded its influence while the god explored it's Illithid biology. It was this insane devotion towards remaking itself that drove the discovery of the further reaches of ceremorphosis.

You see when a host is infected by an Illithid tadpole, the elder brain sends psionic energy through the tadpole to reshape the hosts mind and body, painfully. (Thanks BG3). It turns out that the elder brain can shape flesh in a number of ways, but doesn't, because of the Illithid grand design. The Drowned God pushed the boundaries of what was possible, shaping flesh in horrible monstrous ways while leaving the minds in a state of torment. And as a god, it could pass this power to its clerics.

Now, the god extends it's gaze above again, in a bid to regain its body and divinity. Its Illithid priests shaping the flesh of their captives into more and more grotesque creations.

Included below is a list of experiments recovered from a laboratory where a cleric practiced

Torment Ballista- 6 Subjects - the sinew and bone bend to make the shape of a standard ballista. Nonessential organs are rebuilt into additional brain matter in order increase the psychic torment of the subjects. Throws psychic screams up to 300 yards. Penetrates most vessels.

Mind Cube- 1 subject- bones are pulverized and features are errased. The skin is tightened until the organs and mind within are compressed into cube. Easier to store materials this way.

Psi-reactive Liquid Meat. -1 subject - the former subject resembles a minor slime but opaque, and pink, with arteries and blood vessels spiderwebbing it's exterior. It leaves a trail of blood as it moves to seek the closest source of willpower. The broken creature seeks the brain of a nearby creature and attempts to drain its willpower through the ears and nose of the creatures.

First, congratulations! It is always exciting for a pokemon to evolve. While neither psyduck nor golduck are psychic type pokemon, golduck can benefit from puzzle feeders and other enrichment toys designed for avian psychic types like xatu. As you already would know as the owner of a psyduck, they also enjoy having lots of space to swim and forage for food on their own. It is very important to allow them a chance to practice natural behaviors.

So, I was supposed to do Quetza Temer today but was by Kiava Gamma when I booted the game and so it took forever to cross the map. But I did a bunch of other shit.

Cassia's quest ended with her making peace with the Aeldari and removing the Orsellio souls from the Atlas. I actually really like this outcome because it is her big "what she learned from Casimira" moment, which is very fitting for a choice between being nice to xenos and empowering oneself through questionable methods. And it does feel like the Cas choice to make, in that while evil science is fun, preventing dynastic fractures and keeping the mysterious xenos on-side is even more fun and responsible.

Decided to go with Idira's suggestion that oikonomos Nigmus become the new Prelate of the Order of the Hammer, mainly because he had enough skeletons in his closet to keep him on-side through blackmail. He managed to curb a lot of fervor in the realm of relic-searching, and later on Cas bribed a ton of Ecclesiarchical officials into making Foulstone a worthy shrine world. Our eventual plan to turn the cult of Saint Cognatius into a puppet church is going fantastically.

Got an interesting banter between Yrliet and Marazhai about how he'd rather she give him her pain and despair over her pity, since the latter is the domain of the powerless and...he and Cas are a match made in hell.

Did Heinrix's quest with Emelina. I like that I could see how Cas' influence made Heinrix more callous, in that he was excusing the Inquisition's hypocrisy on heresy, but was still merciful about Emelina. Cas did agree about understanding Emelina's motives, and I am going a little insane about the dialogue after Heinrix kills her. Cas guessed he did it because he didn't want Emelina tortured, and Heinrix kinda scoffed at the idea. Which is the option, granted, Cas who is still angry at him about the dinner probably might not have taken but I actually like it more than the angrier option because it does reflect his caring? Like, Cas doesn't have illusions about the fact that she could maybe go too far one day, but it's kinda reassuring herself that if Heinrix had to intervene he'd let her go quickly? It makes her think even though she is still mad at him.

Reverend Doloroso came to visit Vhaebos and Cas threw such a big party a bunch of people chose to stay....on the planet that's practically a feeder for Feasts. Yay! May they go to the Emperor.

Jae and Cas followed the path of religious tolerance a little too close to the sun and allowed genestealers to flourish. Luckily Marazhai had beacons around to let the Drukhari round up the cult and Cas' Engine Vandals apparently decided they loved being Cas' favorite road bandits over their alien buds so they helped out.

Cas is slowly turning her corner of the expanse into a place of learning as well as crime. Janus, which is now a shelter world for refugees of all types, has a higher literacy rate due to Cas making the serfs go to school, and Dargonus has a librarium full of forbidden knowledge.

Also Cas has some insane buffs now. I'm pretty sure her Fellowship is in the triple digits at least. I also started building her for Officer (Melee Support) while Jae is Officer (Ranged Support), so Jae hangs back buffing Yrliet and Idira, while Cas follows Marazhai and buffs him and herself. Honestly the bonus damage is making me want to up the difficulty a bit. Also Cas has begrudgingly taken up the medic role from Abelard, because she's the only reliable healer in her regular group. She has a lot of general temp and actual hp feats but her primary usage thus far is healing Marazhai after he blows himself sky-high....again. No idea why his demolition skill is so faulty.

And lastly, I always forget Drukhari can't stand psychic powers and Cas does keep bringing Marazhai to warp incursions. He's weaker, and all the worse because Cas' heretic abilities make Warp Phenomena happen more often on kills in the first round...which is his job. But the fact that he still one-shots Bloodletters means apparently he's strong enough to get over all that.

Volcarona is an evolution. That's not possible...are you screwing with me? Also, a tail? Not, like, a cercus or a stinger? Though that would also be the first I've heard of Volcarona with a stinger...

Okay. Well. I'm going to answer this as if you're not fucking with me, and this is an unknown bug pokemon that resembles Volcarona, because let's be clear—whatever that thing is, it is not a Volcarona. If it is real, for the love of Anything, please send me a picture because I am dying to see it.

The very first step to providing it proper care would be to group it into its entomological typing—is it hymenoptera, like Beedrill or Combee? Lepidoptera, like Beautifly and traditional Volcarona? Arachnida, like Paras or Spinarak?

Basically, does it look more like a moth, wasp or spider? That'll help you determine its needs.

If it looks like a Volcarona, then we can probably group it somewhere between hymenoptera and lepidoptera, which means it's likely not solely carnivorous, which is a good thing because arachnids are and they are a pain to keep feeders for. So if you're a first-time Bug owner, not the best situation to be in. Given that your not-Volcarona is probably not singularly carnivorous, you should be fine to feed them basic pokéfood, or regular food if you prefer to cook for your Pokémon.

Secondly—you need to figure out if it has a secondary typing, and if so, what is it? Volcarona are fire-types, but if your Pokémon hatched directly out of an egg and didn't burn it to cinders while doing so (which I imagine you would have mentioned), then it might not be. Fighting- and Psychic- types are nominally related to Fire, so maybe if you have a weird Volcarona mutant it's one of those?

The only clue we have physically is that it has a "snake tail," which is not helpful, so you'll need to watch its behavior and personality to figure out if and what its secondary type might be. That way you can start building its habitat around its type needs—regular Volcarona, for example, needs a warm and sunny spot to rest in, and a metric ton of fire extinguishers. Psychic types often require intellectually challenging activities, and fighting types physical challenges—maybe offer both kinds of stimulus to your Pokémon, along with some other kinds, and see what they do?

Bug types in general need to be outside a lot, except for the ones like Shuckle, which do not want to go anywhere. You should take your Pokémon to the park and see how they respond. You'll also need to make sure they have somewhere to "nest"—they need hides, essentially. I personally just got this giant pineapple-shaped box with a bed inside it, and Buggy (my Volcarona) loves it. Sets it on fire every couple days. Lepidoptera specifically also like to be tall, so make them somewhere high up to perch.

You'll be fine. Just figure out if it has a second type and make sure it has stimulus for its typing, and give them lots of love and care like any other Pokémon. It could be worse—you could've gotten a not-Galvantula...
