It’s a well-known fact that police investigating the Jack the Ripper murders of the late 19th century, were inundated with letters and suggestions from clairvoyants and spiritualists as to the killer’s identity. Perfectly level-headed people suddenly found themselves having visions or holding their own séances in order to try and contribute, in their own way, to the hunt for the fiend. The idea of an ‘ordinary’ flower girl from London becoming embroiled in such a febrile atmosphere of paranormal intrigue and mystery really appealed to me and the character of Constance Piper was born. She’s a girl with aspirations, who wants to escape the poverty of the East End of London. Inspired by her mentor, the missionary Emily Tindall, Constance dreams of a better life, but her life is suddenly turned upside down when she appears to have special powers that give her an extraordinary insight into the dark and disturbing world that surrounds her. Whether or not she’s really psychic, I leave that up to the reader to decide.      

Constance was living at a time of national crisis. Wild accusations and lurid revelations in the newspapers had whipped up a frenzy, making the ‘autumn of terror’ an unprecedented period of history. Reading about all the members of the public who came forward to offer their own suspicions as to Jack’s identity reminded me of an encounter I had as a journalist a few years ago.  I was once sent to interview a titled lady who also claimed to be a healer. My chakras, she told me, were blocked. She could see my ‘aura’ – a sort of halo that she told me everyone had around them - and it needed freeing up. Perhaps it was because she gleaned I was unimpressed by her dubious skills that she then went on to tell me she was psychic. She had, she said, contacted the police on several occasions regarding missing persons. Not only that, but she’d even ‘seen’ the killer of 13 year-old Carl Bridgewater. In one of the most shocking crimes of the last fifty years, Carl was gunned down at point blank range as he delivered newspapers to a farmhouse in Staffordshire. To this day his murderer has escaped justice, but this lady was so confident of her psychic abilities that she had even produced a sketch of Carl’s killer and shown it to the police.  She was not sure, however, if they took her seriously, she said.

That’s precisely the same line that the investigating detectives took in the autumn of 1888 when all London, if not the world, was in the thrall of Jack the Ripper. Quite frankly it would have been more of a surprize if Scotland Yard hadn’t been approached by hundreds of people who believed they had visions, or professional clairvoyants and psychics. That’s because by this time Spiritualism, the belief that the dead communicate with the living, had long been popular throughout Victorian Britain and, indeed, in America, where it is thought to have been started by two New York sisters who claimed to communicate with a ghost. Spiritualism even won the royal seal of approval as early as 1846 when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert took part in séances.

What I found particularly interesting, however, is the case of a psychic by the name of Robert James Lees, the clairvoyant most associated with the hunt for Jack the Ripper. When Prince Albert died of typhoid, in 1861, Lees was just thirteen years old boy and living in Leicester. He claimed he’d received a message from Albert to his widow, Queen Victoria. Amazingly, he relayed to Her Majesty the pet name known only to her and her late husband. Subsequently Lees was invited to hold séances at Windsor Castle in which he purportedly got in touch with the late Prince Consort. It’s therefore hardly surprising that such a well-known and highly regarded spirit medium should offer his services to Scotland Yard when Jack the Ripper began to stalk the streets of London. Lees’s diary entries for the year the Whitechapel murders started – 1888 – state that in October he twice approached both the City Police and Scotland Yard to offer his unique assistance. The police, however, were not impressed and dismissed him as a madman both times, although Scotland Yard did offer to write to him. Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is perhaps one of the most famous spiritualists and was well aware Lees’s reputation. In 1928 he even wrote to the spiritualist asking him to put on record his séances with the queen. What I found even more intriguing was that Conan Doyle even stated that ‘JB’ (presumably John Brown, Victoria’s constant companion after Albert’s death) had ‘powers’ and ‘did act as a medium.” http://rjlees.co.uk/conan.htm.

No doubt Conan Doyle would also have read an article in ‘The Chicago Sunday Times Herald’, published in 1895, which claimed that Lees had spotted a man travelling on a London omnibus and declared him to be ‘Jack the Ripper’. Although not taken seriously at first, it’s said that Lees eventually led the police to the home of a physician whose real name was William Gull – later known as a Ripper suspect. According to the story when the police questioned the doctor he confessed to suffering from occasional losses of memory, even once coming round to find his shirt bloodstained. Evidence allegedly discovered in a subsequent search of his house was hailed as ‘proof’ that he was, indeed, Jack the Ripper and the doctor was committed to a North London asylum under the name Thomas Mason. The whole premise has, however, been discredited. In fact the real Thomas Mason was a 71 year-old retired bookbinder from Islington, who was born in 1817, and who had no connection with Gull, or the Whitechapel murders. Nor was he ever incarcerated in an asylum, but died in 1902 from bronchitis.

As for the source? The origin is thought to be a London doctor who related the tale when worse the wear for drink. It just serves to demonstrate the public’s appetite for stories that combined the notorious murders with a supernatural element. It just goes to show that we all love a good yarn, especially if it’s tinged with the unexplained.

So where do all these rumors and discredited stories leave our heroine, Constance? There’s no doubt she’s a very intuitive persons; sympathetic and empathetic. She ‘feels’ moods and ‘sees’ things that others don’t. Whether or not she’s a psychic, with powers to foresee the future and talk the dead, or is suffering from a mental disorder brought on by deep anxiety - I leave that up to the reader to decide.

Culture, Costume, Dress: Interdisciplinarity

Putting together this conference and its associated events and exhibition has provided an excellent example of the interdisciplinary working that the Faculty of Arts, Design and Media at BCU does so well. While the impetus for the conference came from the School of Fashion and Textiles, the organising committee included staff from English, Jewellery and Visual Communications, and we have all had input in our own areas of expertise as well as learning about new ways of working.

The contributors to the conference come from an even more diverse range of academic backgrounds. Our keynote speakers for the conference include Deirdre Murphy, Senior Curator, Historic Royal Palaces; Dr Catherine Spooner, Reader in Literature and Culture at Lancaster and a familiar name to those interested in Gothic in all its interdisciplinary forms; Dr Mary Harlow, Associate Professor in Ancient History at Leicester, Pauline Rushton, Curator of Costume and Textiles at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and the Dean of the Faculty, Professor David Roberts.

The papers we will hear cover art history, technology, fashion industry, jewellery, performance and film, literature, photography, anthropology, sociology and many more areas. Many papers will explore issues of identity in a particular field, considering how identity is constructed through dress, indicating how widely significant dress is. Virginia Woolf, whose interest in fashion and dress is often overlooked, wrote in Orlando (1928) that:

Vain trifles as they seem, clothes have, they say, more important offices than merely to keep us warm. They change our view of the world and the world’s view of us… There is much to support the view that it is clothes that wear us and not we them; we may make them take the mould of arm or breast, but they mould our hearts, our brains, our tongues to their liking.

Woolf is interested, in Orlando and in her life, in how character is constructed through clothing. Gender, class, financial status, personality and even personal interests, can be apparent through a consideration of dress, though there are many signifiers more nuanced than this. Dress can inform us about history, in a materialist analysis, for example, or about a person or fictional character, in a psychoanalytic aesthetic reading. Marilyn Horn writes that:

‘clothing is a tangible and observable phenomenon that is important to the concept of self and the development of personality. It is often a symptom of suppressed needs and desires, and the analysis of dress can lend insight to a number of hidden psychic problems’ (The Second Skin: An Interdisciplinary Study of Clothing).

The First Modern Pioneer of Energy-Based Physical Mediumship – Rita Goold’

Part 1

  Back in the 1980’s, some very unusual Physical Phenomena was being reported by those lucky people who experienced séances with Leicester-Based Physical Medium Rita Goold. Results included regular ‘Materialisation’ of Spirit Personalities and evidential messages from those Spirit ‘friends’ who visited Rita’s séances. Interestingly, although there was no doubt whatsoever of the ‘solid’ presence of these Spirit Visitors, there was no evidence whatsoever of the substance known as ‘ectoplasm’ which virtually all Spiritualists at that time claimed was ‘absolutely vital’ for the purposes of allowing Spirits to ‘Materialise’.

  In fact, the lack of ‘ectoplasm’ during Rita’s séances caused many Sceptics and Die-Hard Spiritualists alike to cry ‘FRAUD’ where these unusual séances were concerned. The consequences of this were extremely shameful, coming – as they did – mainly from the Spiritual Community themselves!!!

  It is a fact that Rita Goold was on the receiving end of frightening anonymous telephone threats warning her of dire consequences if she went ahead with the séances and scientific experiments. Vicious lies were also being spread to discredit and blacken her character. Rita was deeply hurt because she had dedicated her gift to bringing enlightenment to humanity. She had flatly refused to take one penny for the incredible inconvenience that she was subjected to. In fact she and her circle hosts, Barry and Pat Jeffery, were out of pocket every time a demonstration took place, and all the visitors were fed.

  In 1983, I had already been researching and participating in Physical Mediumship and its phenomena for around 10 years, and had experienced many of its forms. I had belonged to active circles, and Sandra and I were running our own circle in Harold Wood. In my work, I travelled around the UK, and was fortunate enough to meet Rita Goold herself whilst I was in Leicester, where I had once lived. We had a very interesting conversation but – unfortunately – I never had the opportunity to sit with her in her circle.

  It was really only after ‘The Scole Experiment’ in the 1990’s that I fully realised the similarities between Rita’s séances and our own Scole sittings. There was no doubt in my own mind that the phenomena which took place under Rita Goold’s mediumship MUST have been energy-based, just as ours was at Scole!!

  Recently, I have discovered more worthwhile testimonies to the nature and value of Rita’s mediumship, and I would like to share some of those with our readers. A good friend of ours – Medium Christine Morgan (who sat with us at Scole on the day that Princess Diana’s death was announced) – spoke of Rita Goold’s mediumship in 2011, when she recounted what her father – UK medium Eddie Grenyer – had told her of his own personal experiences of ‘Materialisation’ in séances with Rita.

  Eddie Grenyer met Alan Crossley whilst they were both working as mediums in the 1980’s, and they became good friends. At this time, Alan was investigating physical mediumship himself, as he had done for many years before. Sandra and I came to know Alan Crossley well ourselves as a friend who was very knowledgeable in the field of Physical Mediumship and its Phenomena. In fact, Alan became the second President of the Noah’s Ark Society, which I personally founded in 1990.

  One of the frequent ‘solid’ Spirit visitors in Rita’s séances was the famous materialisation medium Helen Duncan. Alan knew her for many years and had often arranged and/or hosted her séances himself whilst she was still alive. After her death, Alan was the author of the book: ‘The Story of Helen Duncan – Materialisation Medium’. Following Helen’s death (as Alan told us many years later) Helen Duncan ‘telephoned’ him on a number of occasions (ringing his normal home telephone!!) from the Spirit World.

  During one of the Rita Goold séances, Helen Duncan asked the circle to ‘find Alan Crossley, and invite him to sit with the circle’. Alan was duly found and invited to Rita’s. he sat with them and became a regular sitter. On one occasion, he sat with the circle 7 times on 7 consecutive nights, staying with Rita during the week. Years later he told us that he had been totally convinced of Rita’s genuine psychic abilities when – whilst conversing casually with her – he watched a child’s soft toy IN FULL LIGHT – ‘walking up the wall to the ceiling’!!

  Alan Crossley’s visits to the Rita Goold Circle eventually led to Eddie Grenyer also being invited along on 8 or 9 occasions. Mr Grenyer spoke of the wonderful phenomena and evidence provided by the communicators at these sittings, and of the many discussions about them he had with Alan Crossley right up to the time of Alan’s passing to Spirit himself in the late 1990’s.

  Helen Duncan was one of the main controls of the circle, together with Laura Lorraine (Rita’s own grandmother). Rita’s séances (like those at Scole) were all held in the dark and NO ectoplasm was used. Helen Duncan herself said that the reason for Spirit’s ‘no ectoplasm’ policy was the fact that ectoplasm could be dangerous. Helen herself had died after being harmed by inappropriate police action during a raid at one of Helen’s séances in Nottingham.

  Instead, Rita’s Spirit team explained that they were using an ‘energy’ as old as time itself. They said that Rita Goold was rare in having an abundance of this energy, so that it was possible for it to be used for the ‘materialisation’ of actual Spirit People during séances.

  Spirit actually produced some of the ‘spirit lighted’ conditions themselves on occasions for sitters to see the ‘materialised’ visitors (reminiscent of the spirit lights we had at Scole for the same purpose). When this happened, the silhouette and solid form of the Spirit person could be seen. Sometimes, however, without the spirit lights, evidence could only be given through the Independent Direct Voice of the visiting spirit themselves.

  Eddie Grenyer was present on one occasion when Raymond Lodge visited the circle and conversed with the sitters. There were spirit lights produced, and sitters could see the clear outline of Raymond’s boots and army uniform. He did not completely solid, but there was no question as to the fact that he was – indeed – materialised and completely solid as he stood in the room.

  Laura Lorraine was a very significant Spirit Character at the séances. She had actually died giving birth to Rita’s mother, aged just 22. Before that, she had been a young singer in the Music Halls. This was confirmed by the beautiful quality of her singing in the séances.

  In fact, Eddie Grenyer stated that on two occasions he had been pulled from his chair by the solid form of Laura Lorraine, who then proceeded to waltz around the room with him!! Once Laura had also asked him to run his hand down her body to prove that she was quite solid and, furthermore, was a female with feminine curves!! Whenever Laura was there, sitters were treated to the strong smell of her favourite old-fashioned perfume too.

“Gone are the cabinets, black draperies and semi-religious trappings,” he explained. “The sittings are notable for their informality. From my point of view, the new methods and techniques used by the spirit operators mark the greatest turning point in psychic history. Void of all mystique, there is none of the spooky atmosphere so common in former years.”

The absence of ectoplasm in evolving materialisations during Rita Goold’s seances was seen by Alan Crossley as a new development in mediumship. He stated at the time:

  “There are many features concerning the new phenomena which clearly distinguish them from all previous methods,” he said. “This shift away from old techniques can only help rather then hinder progress towards a better understanding of the whole subject. The question many will ask is: ‘How do they do it?’ That is, of course, too complex a question at this stage and one that has not so far been revealed.”

  Ten years later – in the 1990’s – another Spirit Team (working with us at Scole) went on to replicate much of the phenomena that had been witnessed during the sittings in Rita Goold’s Circle (whilst working ostensibly in the same way), and expanded on the work they had done there. Luckily, during the five years of ‘The Scole Experiment’ our Spirit Team were able to explain the mechanics of the energy-based phenomena in depth to us, so we could pass that information on to others.
