#Repost @unesco (@get_repost) ・・・ Do you know where we are today? These are among the most spectacular waterfalls in the world… Welcome to The Mosi-oa-Tunya/Victoria Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Mosi-oa-Tunya/Victoria Falls is the place is where the Zambezi River, which is more than 2 km wide at this point, plunges noisily down a series of basalt gorges and raises an iridescent mist that can be seen more than 20 km away. This is indeed the world’s greatest sheet of falling water. It is 1,708 m wide and with up to 500 million litres per minute descending at 61 m (Devil’s Cataract), 83 m (Main Falls), 99 m (Rainbow Falls), 98 m (Eastern Cataract). These waterfalls are significant worldwide for their exceptional geological and geomorphological features and the spray, mist and rainbows they create. This World Heritage site is actually a transboundary property, shared between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It extends over 6,860ha comprising large parts of the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, Zambia, and the Victoria Falls National Park, Zimbabwe, as well as the Zambezi National Park, also in Zimbabwe. These waterfalls are a major tourist attraction, this is why urban infrastructure developments, tourism facilities and services can impact the site’s integrity. Since its inscription on the World Heritage List in 1989, UNESCO is advocating for a careful management of the Mosi-oa-Tunya/Victoria Falls site to avoid compromising its exceptional beauty and its outstanding universal value. It is our duty to protect and preserve all World Heritage sites for future generations. #WorldHeritage #VictoriaFalls #MosiOaTunya #NationalPark #Zambia #Zimbabwe #UNESCO #Zambezi #River #ProtectHeritage #Heritage #NaturalHeritage #Tourism #SustainableTourism #SustainableDevelopment #Africa #PriorityAfrica #Nature Photo credit: Adam Photography/iStock/Getty Images 📸📸📸📸 https://www.instagram.com/p/B19IV_rg1aCIFRFuJrMsZO0qs6KP1ssJGZAM7U0/?igshid=wr9372efq48

This is the Nevado de Toluca, a stratovolcano located in Mexico and the country’s fourth-highest pea
This is the Nevado de Toluca, a stratovolcano located in Mexico and the country’s fourth-highest peak. In pre-Hispanic times, the people living here performed rituals and offerings within the volcano. They used the two permanent bodies of water inside the crater, called the Lake of the Sun and the Lake of the Moon. Over time, archeological remains deposited within the lakes have been studied and researchers have been able to reveal the important historic relationships between societies and the volcano. Since 2007, the project "Underwater Archaeology at The Nevado de Toluca" has been studying this site both on the ground and underwater, while raising awareness of the archaeological site among the public, especially the surrounding local communities. When we share culture, we learn to protect what is important. . . . . . On Sunday, 27 September 2015, Jordan and Italy, together with UNESCO, INTERPOL and UNODC will host a High-Level Special Event to launch a new international initiative that seeks to enhance the protection of cultural heritage targeted by terrorists and illicit traffickers.
Throughout the last decade, the world has witnessed a sharp increase in the amount of destruction and terrorist attacks against cultural heritage of countries affected by armed conflict, as well as the unprecedented scale of organized looting, illicit trafficking and sale of cultural objects.
The event comes against a backdrop of increased international activity aimed at countering this threat. The Security Council as well as the General Assembly have taken steps to condemn and deplore the destruction of cultural property. In June, Italy, Jordan and UNESCO hosted a roundtable discussion to assess ongoing efforts to counter the destruction of, and trafficking in, cultural property.
The Protecting Cultural Heritage initiative is a project open to all Member States, international organizations and partners wishing to join forces in support of the protection of cultural heritage from destruction and/or illicit trafficking. In order to raise awareness and multiply the actions against this threat, a social media campaign will also kick off on the day of the event with the hashtag #ProtectHeritage. Join the conversation
