Protect Yourself While Grocery Shopping From the Corona Virus
Here are the precautions to take, whether you shop in-store or online

With experts saying to avoid crowded places because of the novel coronavirus, what should you do about grocery shopping? One option people are turning to is grocery delivery services.
Instacart, one of the largest grocery delivery services, told us that over the past week its subscription growth swelled tenfold. In California, Washington, and New York—states where to date the most coronavirus cases have been reported—Instacart has seen a twentyfold growth.
“For older people and those with underlying health conditions—the group that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends stay home—I would highly recommend using a grocery delivery service,” says Jim Rogers, CR’s director of food safety research and testing.
But whether you buy groceries online or in stores, there are some simple steps you can take to try to limit your exposure to the novel coronavirus, and they’re not so different from what CR recommends you typically do. Be sure to:

Protect Yourself From Coronavirus
What You Might Need While Quarantined
Do You Need a Mask to Prevent Coronavirus?
Wash nonporous containers. Use dish soap on plastic, glass, and metal before putting them away. Simple rubbing with soap and water can kill the coronavirus because it tears apart the virus’s outer barrier.
Wash your hands, counter, and other surfaces you’ve touched. Do this after you’ve put away the groceries. Keep in mind that using disinfectant isn’t necessary unless you’re sharing a space with someone who is exhibiting signs of respiratory illness or has been exposed to the virus.
Wash produce with running water. There’s no data to show that washing fruits and vegetables with soap will do a better job of eliminating coronavirus—or, more to the point, that the virus is spread by consuming those foods, Rogers says. But rubbing fruits and vegetables under running water—and scrubbing those with hard skins—can help remove pesticides.
Other steps may not make much difference. For instance, buying frozen vegetables rather than fresh under the assumption that they’re packed in a more sanitary way hasn’t been backed up by evidence, Rogers says.
If You’re Getting Your Groceries Delivered
Even if a grocery store or warehouse is thoroughly cleaned on a regular basis, the delivery person needs to take the same precautions to prevent the spread of a virus to you. Among the six services in our recent review of grocery delivery-services, AmazonFresh, Amazon Prime Now, Instacart, and Shipt all employ independent contractors for deliveries. (FreshDirect and Peapod delivery personnel are company employees; Walmart, which was not part of our ratings, uses DoorDash for deliveries.)
So while those companies may highly recommend that deliverers wash their hands often, practice other hygiene measures, and stay home when they’re feeling sick, they can’t monitor whether drivers are actually taking those precautions, says Erin Hatton, an associate professor of sociology and labor scholar at the University of Buffalo. “And without paid sick leave, workers are going to try to push through as much as they can,” Hatton says.
That said, follow these steps when ordering deliveries:
Avoid a direct hand-off. Arrange to have the items delivered to your doorstep or a place nearby instead. Instacart added that option last week; other companies have places on their order forms where you can indicate special delivery instructions. FreshDirect says its drivers will no longer bring your groceries into your home.
Tip electronically. One benefit of ordering deliveries online or via an app is that you don’t have to hand the delivery person money. Opportunities to tip the delivery person are included in most of the delivery apps and online ordering systems.
Order earlier than you normally do. Though it’s not a safety issue, you may find that in the midst of higher demand, you have to wait longer than normal. FreshDirect, for instance, mentions on its home page that delivery times are filling up faster than usual. AmazonPrime Now, which chiefly delivers from Whole Foods, also mentions that “availability may be limited,” though it’s not clear whether that means delivery times are limited or items are limited, or both. (An Amazon representative did not respond to a request for comment.)
If You’re Picking Up Prepacked Groceries
The steps are basically the same for this option as for delivery. If you’ve ordered in advance and are merely having someone put the groceries in your car in the parking lot—an option at around 3,000 Walmart locations nationwide—consider opening your car door yourself rather than having the person bringing the items to your car touch the handles. And if you can tip on the supermarket’s app, do so rather than handing over cash. (Walmart’s employees aren’t permitted to take tips.)
If You’re Buying Groceries In-Store
A key way to prevent the virus’s spread is to stay 6 feet away from other people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that’s generally the distance within which people pick up coronavirus droplets through the air from a cough or sneeze. Such “social distancing” is a good strategy in any situation outside the home, Rogers suggests. Other ideas:
Go shopping at a time that’s less busy. If you type in the store’s name and location in Google search, a box often will pop up showing when foot traffic there is highest.
Take germicide with you. Use it to wipe your hands and the cart—both before and after you shop.
Use a credit or debit card. That way, you don’t have to hand over bills or receive change. Also, use your own pen to sign receipts. If you can, use a virtual payment system like Apple Pay so that you don’t have to open your wallet at all.

Ziqitza Healthcare :Best PPEs For The Common Man
PPE or personal protective equipment has become a household term across all borders. Wearing a mask is essential and gloves are an adequate bonus. There can be different types of masks that a person can wear. It could be an N-95 onetime use mask or a 3-layered reusable mask or just a regular surgical mask.
But as we all know, India is a country that has the most amount of variation in income across the population. Not everyone can afford use-and-throw masks every day and some can’t even afford a mask! So in thisZiqitza blog post, we’ve compiled a list of all the choices for personal protective equipment that anyone can pick from according to their needs and surroundings.
The Surgical Mask
Surgical masks are simple, effective, and inexpensive. They were the standard for PPEs when the pandemic started and are still in use by the general public. Although Ziqitza Healthcare ltd would advise against that as use and throw masks are polluting the environment, we just banned straws and plastic bags so let us continue being environmentally conscious.
Moreover, surgical masks are also needed by doctors and hospital employees. Continual use of surgical masks by the general public will result in ashortage of masks for doctors as well as harm the environment. Some people also tend to reuse surgical masks which is something that they are not meant for which renders them useless and offers no protection the second time. Try to avoid surgical masks for your daily wear as they increase the pollution that has gone down in the pandemic
The Cloth Mask
Cloth masks are the standard now as more and more people are realizing that the CoronaVirus is not going away anytime soon, or at least not completely going away anytime soon.
Cloth masks are the perfect personal protective equipment for the common man as they are readily available and don’t cost much. But the advantage that cloth masks have over surgical masks and other non-permanent masks like the N-95 is that they are reusable. Cloth masks can be used for a significant amount of time by the general citizen.
Not only are cloth masks the best option for general PPE, but they also help in givinglocal tailors and weavers their livelihoods back. Ziqitza Healthcare recommends buying local masks or ordering online from small businesses as they are the ones that are one of the gravely affected due to this pandemic.
One thing to note is that cloth masks should be washed thoroughly after every use. Wearing unwashed cloth masks will offer you little to no protection as cloth masks need to be cleaned regularly. For convenience, you can buy two masks and use them alternatively. But what we’ve found is that washing your mask after every use is the best habit to develop if you’re using a cloth mask as a PPE.
The Biker Mask
Biker masks are a great alternative for those who find it difficult to breathe in surgical or cloth masks as they are baggier and more freeing. Biker masks are also great if you want to exercise outdoors in a pandemic. You can easily pull down the mask allowing yourself to catch your breath and then put it up afterward.
Biker masks just like regular cloth masks also need to be washed regularly otherwise they could develop a lot of greasy problems. An unclean mask is filled with your sweat, facial bacteria, and dirt. It is a breeding ground for diseases that some might say is not ideal protection against a deadly disease.
The Muffler Mask
It’s not wintertime yet, but a tight muffler serves the same purpose as any general personal protective equipment. Maintain social distancing (a 6 feet gap between two people) and a muffler mask or any other cloth that covers your face is fine for general use.
Sanitizer
Carrying a sanitizer with you at all times goes a long, long way in reducing your chances of contracting the CoronaVirus. Sanitizing everything you come in contact with is a good habit to develop in a pandemic.
Don’t come in direct contact with a public surface that could be a palette for COVID-19 unnecessarily and even if you do so sanitize immediately afterward. It’s just good practice, an extra protective layer as you may say that covers any mistakes your subconscious mind may make by touching unsterile surfaces.
Gloves
Medical grade rubber gloves are available in every medical store and now even in grocery stores. Gloves ensure that you come in minimal contact with anything that can carry Corona. They also help in reducing the propagation of the virus in case you are an asymptomatic carrier.
It is just beneficial for you and the general public that fewer and fewer people come in direct contact with any un-sanitized object or surface.
Ziqitza would urge people to wear gloves while shopping for groceries as that is one of the few situations in which a common man/woman would come in contact with numerous objects meant for the public.
Even if you do wear gloves, sanitize all groceries afterward as groceries come in contact with the most amount of hands in their delivery period, not to mention fruits and vegetables are stocked daily meaning a spread can occur with no difficulty if a single asymptomatic person comes in contact with them regardless of whether they are an employee or a customer.

30 Most Informative Coronavirus Questions And Answers
30 Most Informative Coronavirus Questions And Answers
1- What is coronavirus, covid-19 and coronavirus disease?
Covid-19 is a newly identified virus that first appeared in China in 2019. The virus belongs to corona group, which is a group of 29 viruses that affect humans and animals. Corona viruses usually cause mild illness like cold and flu, and sometimes develop to severe acute respiratory syndrome SARS-CoV, or Middle East respiratory syndrome MERS-CoV. The virus is also known as SARS-CoV-2 as it belongs to nCoV strain, which has not been identified in humans before.
2- What is the source of coronavirus?
Coronaviruses are zoonotic, which means they transferred to humans through animals or mosquitoes. Investigations found that the new coronavirus probably was transmitted to humans through bats and pangolins, in Wuhan’s wild animals market. Other viruses like SARS-CoV was transmitted through civet cats, and MERS-CoV through dromedary camels.
What about pets, can they get or spread the infection?
I will list in my coming topics all information regarding coronavirus and pets, how to deal with them if you or they get the infection, and many others matters to help protect both the pet and its owner. But in general, ferrets are more likely to get covid-19 than dogs, so you must provide balanced nutrition with vitamins, keep your house clean and keep your pet inside to prevent the contact with dust, surfaces, other pets and people too. As for dogs, try to minimize the outings and choose empty places where you can walk your dog safely, or keep a 6 ft distance like we do with humans. Also wash the pet’s feet when you return home, and NEVER use bleach solution or alcohol with pets.
30 Most Informative Coronavirus Questions And Answers
3- How does the coronavirus spread?
There are many ways that contribute in the spreading of coronavirus, but the infection happens basically through coughs and sneezes. Read about How does the coronavirus spread.
4- Why does it spread quickly?
There is actually only one reason for spreading quickly, which is the direct contact between people as they don’t follow protective measures or stay in crowded places where infection is easily transmitted.
Coronavirus Questions And Answers
5- Can an infected person with Covid-19 spread the illness to others?
Sure, they can! The basic way coronavirus is transmitted is through direct contact with infected people. So, it is important to practice social distancing and keep your hands clean and disinfected. For more protective measures view these informative topics:

7- What are the symptoms of coronavirus? And do I know if I have covid-19 or flu?
Coronavirus symptoms are fever, dry cough, headache, body and bone aches, chills, difficulty breathing, pneumonia and kidney failure. Read the full detailed differences between : Covid-19, cold, flu and seasonal allergies What Are The Coronavirus Symptoms?
30 Most Informative Coronavirus Questions And Answers
8- Can people recover from coronavirus disease?
Sure, they can! It is likely, for healthy and young people, that the infection will take around 2 or 4 weeks and go away without hospitalization or medicine. Your immunity system is the best and most powerful defender, and the symptoms are just indication for your white blood cells fighting the virus and preventing it from invading the respiratory tract. To have a better understanding, if your immune system is strong and able to finish the virus, you will experience slight raise in temperature, less coughing and mild body aches. If your immune system is weak, or busy fighting chronic problems, then you will experience more symptoms like fever, severe aches, more coughs, etc.

9- What is the recovery time for covid-19?
People with mild symptoms may take just 2 weeks, depending on the immunity, while others with severe symptoms require up to 6 weeks. Some of them may need hospitalization and the elderly are at risk.
30 Most Informative Coronavirus Questions And Answers
10- How dangerous is coronavirus?
Coronavirus is not fatal for healthy people. It may cause severe symptoms, but rarely does it kill you. However, there are surely some people who are more vulnerable than others, like the elderly and those with heart/cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, immunity diseases, kidney problems and all chronic diseases in general.
11- Is there a treatment of vaccine for coronavirus?
There is no vaccine or treatment, until now, for coronavirus, but there are continous clinical experiments and trials to find medications. Scientists are also trying to develop a medicine using the antibodies extracted from the plasma of recovered people.
30 Most Informative Coronavirus Questions And Answers
12- Does consuming alcohol kill the coronavirus?
Certainly NO! Consuming alcohol in its disinfecting form is very dangerous because the concentration 70% will cause severe health problems and stomach bleeding, in addition to damaging the liver and brain cells. You should never drink alcohol to disinfect your throat for example, because the virus is a DNA that gets inside the throat cells trying to broaden its spread to the airways and down to the lungs.
30 Most Informative Coronavirus Questions And Answers
13- Can I drink alcohol/spirits during the coronavirus pandemic?
It is better to reduce the consumption of alcohol during the corona outbreak. Alcoholic drinks/spirits have bad health effects in general, and they affect the immune system in particular. In addition to that, they contribute to liver damage and brain problems, as alcohol is a psychoactive substance known to lead to mental disorders. So, you should stop drinking if you have a history with mental disorders and depression, especially when you are living alone or in self-isolation.
30 Most Informative Coronavirus Questions And Answers
14- Is smoking a risk factor for coronavirus?
Yes! Smoking doesn’t just ham your mouth and respiratory tract. It is the main cause for most respiratory diseases and infections like cold, flu, pneumonia, asthma, tuberculosis, inflammations, etc. Smoking is responsible for the development of covid-19 symptoms, in infected people, and the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome, which is a key complication in convid-19 cases who have severe symptoms.
30 Most Informative Coronavirus Questions And Answers
15- How to protect yourself from coronavirus?
You can protect yourself by reducing the exposure to the virus, or staying at home, and also avoid direct contact with anyone showing respiratory illness or symptoms.. Practice social distancing and hands/respiratory hygiene. Read here: tips and protective measures against coronavirus
16- Will warm weather stop the coronavirus outbreak?
There is no evidence on such thing until now, although cold and flu are more likely to spread during winter, but that doesn’t mean they don’t in warm months… Because the existence of a virus is independent of temperature; It depends basically on how long can its DNA last outside the host cells “living being cells”. So, cold and flu just spread more when people’s immunity get weaker in winter, and the direct contact between people encourages a higher ratio of infections during the cold months.
30 Most Informative Coronavirus Questions And Answers
17- Does coronavirus spread in humid or rainy weather?
Yes! The spread of coronavirus, or SARS_CoV-2, is not dependent on climate changes. It depends on whether you are in direct contact with infected people or not.
18- What is community spread?
Community spread means that there is an area where a virus or some disease spreads between people, even if some of those people don’t know where or how they became infected. It is more of determining a geographic range for the spread of a disease, and each country or health department determines this differently based on local conditions.
19- Can mosquitoes or ticks spread coronavirus?
There is no evidence or data that suggests covid-19 spreading through mosquito bites. Because it is mainly a respiratory disease that affects lung cells, not blood disease or infection circulating your blood. Exactly like the difference between Lyme disease and flu, does flu spread through injection or ticks bites? No! Coronavirus spreads basically through droplets of saliva and nasal discharge, coughs and sneezes, or transmitting the infection from contaminated surface to your mouth or nose.
30 Most Informative Coronavirus Questions And Answers
20- Does coronavirus spread through food, restaurant take out, delivered food or frozen packages?
There are no reported cases of people infected through food, fresh produce, or grocery. But caution is recommended to all, when grocery shopping and when cooking as well. You should wash your hands for at least 20 seconds before and during cooking. As for frozen food, restaurant and delivered food, there are no reported cases to date. But there is possibility that any food worker who gets infected, will spread the virus in their workspace, if they are not doing continuous hygiene. Then the risk will increase, if they are more likely to deal, prepare or package open food. Read more information on: How to receive delivery and food packages safely?
21- Does coronavirus spread by donating or receiving blood?
No! Coronavirus has nothing to do with your blood. It affects only the respiratory tract, so it is totally safe to donate and receive blood, if you are healthy and well. Blood donation is life saving and health care centers/hospitals encourage healthy people to donate blood, allowing enough space between beds and offering the highest safety levels for donators.
22- When will I start to be contagious after I get infected with coronavirus?
Usually after 48 hours of infection. The incubation period of covid-19 is 14 days, and people start to experience/show symptoms within 4-5 days. That means people start to be contagious 48 hours before showing symptoms. So, this strengthens the recommendation for physical distancing and wearing masks, to reduce the risk that an infected person might spread the virus when, or even before, they are contagious.
30 Most Informative Coronavirus Questions And Answers
23- What to do if your child is infected with coronavirus?
It is better to seek medical help or advice in case of children and old people as well, because even if the symptoms are not severe they can develop quickly in a way that is difficult to control at home.
30 Most Informative Coronavirus Questions And Answers
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
24- Should I do covid-19 test if I’m not showing symptoms?
No! If you are well, there is no need to undergo the test, until you show symptoms that are difficult to distinguish from other infections.
25- Can I get infected again after recovering from coronavirus?
Yes! Like cold and flu and other viral infections, you can get coronavirus again after recovery. Researches showed that the number of antibodies produced by the immune system, to fight certain disease, drops gradually within 2 to 3 months. And even the existence of the antibodies in your blood doesn’t guarantee the prevention of re-infection. It all depends on your immune system at that time.
26- When can I go out in public after recovering from coronavirus?
It is unknown actually, but according to research people stay contagious 10 days or more, after the resolution of symptoms. So, you should stay home for a while, and if there is a must to go out, carry alcohol spray, wear a mask, don’t touch surfaces and stay away from people; at least 6 ft.
27- What is self-isolation and self-quarantine?
There is no big difference between both. Both are done to minimize the spread of infection, but self-isolation is not done for long period and some people do it if they think they have been exposed to the virus, and not yet showing symptoms. Foe example, people who are awaiting covid-19 test results, and those with mild symptoms of cold and flu, or others who feel unwell in general. In other words when you still don’t know if you have covid-19 or not. Self-quarantine is usually made for 14 days, and usually to those who already know they have been exposed to the virus, like when you live with someone who has been infected and already showing symptoms.
28- What should I have at home for self-isolation or quarantine?
First, enough food… Like canned foods, fresh fruits and vegetables that you can freeze and use, cereals, crackers, bread, pasta, rice, meats, honey, peanut butter, other foods that you may need and for sure enough amount of pet food.
Have at least 2 weeks or your prescribed medicine, thermometer, painkiller, vitamins, soap, alcohol bottles, sanitizers, paper towels, trash bags, toilet paper, tissues, detergents and cleaners, and other similar stuff.
30 Most Informative Coronavirus Questions And Answers
29- What products to use for disinfecting for covid-19?
Washing your hands and clothes should be done with soap and detergent, like you do every day. If you think you have been exposed to covid-19, add some bleach to the washing water and disinfect your hands with alcohol. As for your house, I personally prefer alcohol spray because it is less harmful than bleach, but since this can be expensive for some, you can make diluted bleach solution of 1 part bleach : 10 parts water. Use paper towel and spray the solution on everything you use frequently, wipe with paper towel and rinse with wet towel, if possible. Why we rinse? Because bleach can kill viruses but in fact it is toxic, so its better to rinse or wipe things with water, if you have children and pets.
30 Most Informative Coronavirus Questions And Answers
30- Can coronavirus spread through feces?
The probability that you will get infected through body waste is very low. No confirmed cases got infected from such source; only through direct contact, coughs or sneezes. A few cases (just 2-10%) experienced diarrhea among covid-19 symptoms, but that’s normal for many viral infections. If you are concerned, follow the common hygiene procedures you always do when you clean your bathroom or deal with body waste. Use bleach to clean and disinfect bathrooms and other things (like bed sheets) that might have any body fluids/waste on them. If you have symptoms, stay in your own room, don’t share clothes or any stuff, ensure that everything gets cleaned and sanitized regularly, and use a separate bathroom, if possible.

35 Times People Spotted Others Acting Like Morons During This Outbreak And Shared Pics Online
Our lives are changing and we’re finding out that adapting to the “new normal” is harder than it looks on paper. While most of us occasionally slip up, there are some people who have completely left rational thought by the roadside the moment the quarantine came into effect.
Internet users can’t help but poke fun at how some people are clueless about how viruses work, so Bored Panda has collected some of the funniest photos of people doing dumb things during the pandemic. Scroll down, enjoy the coronavirus stupidity, and upvote your fave pics, dear Pandas. And let us know in the comments if you’ve encountered any Covidiots so far.
Avoiding products that have the name “Corona” in them is one thing, but microwaving money to “disinfect” it (pro-tip: don’t ever do this) and disregarding safe facemask and glove use is a whole ‘nother ball game entirely.

#3 Well, Thank Goodness The Virus Can't Move Sideways
Fear makes us do stupid, dumb, irrational things. No matter how cool a cucumber you might be in fair weather conditions, once the coronacrap hits the metaphorical fan, your true character comes out. And the fear of the virus has created public panic in some places.
For instance, in China, there have been reported cases of people hunting down pet cats and dogs due to misinformation about how the virus works. Meanwhile in Malaysia, some citizens were busy spreading rumors that coronavirus patients turned into zombies.

We can judge all we want, but elementary human psychology tells us that fear changes the way that we see the world and react to things. In times of panic, we’re far more likely to conform and turn to herd-mentality so that we can feel safe.
If your friends, family, and neighbors are doing something, the odds are, we’ll be doing it as well. The best thing we can do is try to calm down and bring a bit of logic and common sense back into our lives.

Most commonly asked questions about Coronavirus and lockdown - Times of India
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/most-commonly-asked-questions-about-coronavirus-and-lockdown-times-of-india/
Most commonly asked questions about Coronavirus and lockdown - Times of India
As the number of novel coronavirus cases has touched 3,83,908 globally and resulted in 16,587 deaths, impacted countries around the world are going under lockdown as their final resort to contain the highly contagious and fatal coronavirus. Amidst reports of India not testing enough for the disease, it alone has nearly 500 positive cases of COVID-19 and 9 fatalities. Since the cases of the viral infection have surged, authorities have put almost the entire country under lockdown, banning gathering of people and suspending road, rail and air traffic till March 31.
While staying at home is no longer a luxury but a means to stay safe and protected, we understand that you may have plenty of questions. We are here to help you understand what exactly is happening, demystify the keywords around coronavirus and help you stay safe.
Can I step out to withdraw money from the ATM? Yes, one can step out to withdraw money individually
Can I go out for a jog in the morning? Yes, but only individually
Is it ok to go to the park in the neighbourhood for my morning walk? No. Under the current circumstances, it is best to avoid outdoor activities. However, if you can find a time of the day when there is no one around, you can take a quick stroll.
Will I be arrested if I step out of home? No
Can I book an Uber or Ola to go to the airport? Yes
Is it safe to use the lift in my building. There are about 1500 apartments in the complex Yes. You have to ensure that you maintain proper hand hygeine and respiratory hygiene. You can even try disposable gloves and face mask to protect yourself from catching the infection through the lift buttons.
Will I be able to leave my city/state? Several states have sealed their borders and only essential services and emergency cases are being allowed to cross. Travel only if you must.
Will I be penalised, if I break the lockdown? All lockdown advisories should be followed with utmost seriousness. The police can take punitive action against you if they feel your actions are endangering the lives or disrupting the law.
For how long will the lockdown continue? A majority of the states have issued guidelines until March 31, however, there are some instances where advisories have been issued for shut down of services till mid-April.
Can I go out? Avoid. A person should venture out of his home only for essential needs. People should also avoid public transport as much as possible.

Wilkes reacts to COVID-19
From Record Staff Reports
With schools called off statewide in North Carolina for at least two weeks, Wilkes County Schools will offer breakfasts and lunches for children ages 1 through 18.
The meals started being offered on Tuesday, March 17. Meals may be picked up at the school site in the car line with the exception being Wilkes Early College High School, which is on the campus of Wilkes Community College.
Breakfasts will be served from 7:30 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. and lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
This information was released Monday afternoon following a minimal two-week school cancellations which was announced over the weekend.
On Tuesday The Governor closed dinning rooms in restaurants limiting food services to only take out and deliver. He assured that grocery stores would remain open, but urged citizens not to hoard and to leave items for people who can’t afford to stockpile food and other commodities.
Wilkes County has suddenly become a different world.
If you’ve been to the grocery store recently, you’ve bound to have noticed the toilet paper section.
It’s basically empty.
Why?
Folks across Wilkes, the state and the country are hoarding such items including hand sanitizers and bottled water it seems in case there is a mass mandated quarantine to halt or slow the spread of COVID-19.
But…toilet paper?
The New York Times quoted Health Secretary Alex M. Azar II as saying, “Toilet paper is not an effective way to prevent getting the coronavirus, but they’re selling out.”
Although there may be humor in that statement, local, state and national officials are not taking the threat of the spread of COVID-19 lightly.
And as of Sunday afternoon, the virus was knocking at Wilkes’ door with one confirmed case in Watauga County and possible cases under investigation in Yadkin County.
Although there have been talk of COVID-19 already being in Wilkes, no such report had been substantiated.
The Tribune in Elkin reported that there are two persons under investigation who have been tested for the corona virus, or COVID-19 as of Friday at 12:30 p.m. in Yadkin County. These individuals have been informed about the virus and how it is spread and are self-monitoring while waiting test results, according to a news release from Yadkin County Human Services Agency.
WBTV, a Charlotte-based television station, reported that a Boone-based staff member of the international relief charity Samaritan’s Purse tested positive for the coronavirus shortly after returning from an overseas trip.
According to the company, the employee returned nine days ago from countries “considered to be at lower risk at the time of travel.”
The staff member didn’t return to work and self-quarantined upon their return home. They were tested at their home by the Watauga County Health Department.
“We are working in full cooperation with the local health department in identifying other staff who may have been in contact with the employee who has tested positive, and though we can’t know for sure whether their contact was prior to or after the virus was contracted, each of these employees has also self-quarantined,” the organization said. The organization said it is reducing staff on its Boone headquarters and Wilkes campus effective immediately and moving many employees to work-from-home status, the WBTV report stated.
In Wilkes, and across North Carolina, schools are cancelled, MerleFest has been cancelled as well as many church services and most any other event where people usually gather in significant numbers.
As of Tuesday there have been 32 confirmed cases reported statewide. The counties which reported confirmed cases are: 14 in Wake County; four in Mecklenburg; two apiece in Hartnett, Johnston and Forsyth counties; and one apiece in Durham, Brunswick, Craven, Chatham, Cabarrus, Onslow, Wayne, Brunswick, Craven, and Watauga counties

Record Editor Jerry Lankford asked some of his Facebook friends their thoughts on the virus. Here’s what they said:
Ashley Osborne Jones: “I’m not afraid. I am not stocking up on anything. I don’t live in fear. I have faith that I will be OK. If not I have already on hand two weeks worth of food and supplies.”
Melissa Triplett: “I’m not afraid. ‘Fear not, for I am with you, be not dismayed, for I am your God, I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:103.’”
Rebecca Davis: “I could stand to shed some pounds. So with what food we have it will make do. We have growing grandchildren to feed in the home. They love to eat cereal. So milk, cereal, bread, peanut butter, jelly and eggs.”
Leslie Michelle Rivera-Cruz: “Not afraid at all. I’m only afraid of the consequences of fear.”
William M. Harden: “I’m not afraid but it’s because I have done my research on it. At the same time I’m not recklessly acting like it’s no big deal. I’m a young healthy man, but not everyone has my immune system. Not afraid of catching it (is very likely at some point) but am concerned for the elderly/youth/immune compromised that will have a harder time fighting it off. Stay educated and don’t panic you guys, it will only make the situation worse.”
Kellene Wells Bock: “I have a healthy respect for the virus but I’m not afraid. I think the steps being taken now should keep it to manageable status in the U.S. Not stocking up on anything because I don’t foresee steps taken in foreign countries being necessary in the U.S. (if people will just be smart) so we should be able to get what we need, once shelves get restocked.”
Anne Privette Johnson: “As an elderly woman with underlying health concerns Mom plans to stick close to the house. I made sure her prescriptions were filled and we have all her OTC meds. We keep toilet paper and paper towels on hand. I checked the pantry and inventoried cleaning supplies. We were in pretty good shape, so I picked up just a few things we needed. With schools closed I will be here more. I bought some breakfast items and sandwich fixings. I guess I didn’t stock up - just the normal grocery shopping. Prayers for everyone.”
Andy Rhodes: “I’m more afraid of main stream media hype than Covid19. Get your info from the CDC, not the nightly news frenzy of doom and gloom. Will I get Covid19, probably so, I am a nurse in a health care setting, am I worried? A little, but I’m confident all will be OK.”
Alayna Taylor Harden: “I’m far more bothered by/afraid of the hysteria than the actual virus. I know it’s a threat to certain people in our communities (and I say this as someone who has a compromised immune system and small kids), but this is far beyond reasonable precautions. The fact that sheer panic has been manufactured by the media is a very scary thing on its own.”
Lisa De Maio Brewer: “This is a very concerning virus. We've never seen anything like this in our lifetime. If we do not take it seriously, we will face the sad consequences. Seek wisdom!”
Terrie Byrd: “Yes I'm self quarantined due to my immune system not functioning properly. I'm both immune deficient and immune compromised. What I have in terms of antibodies fighting germs comes from 1,000 to 1,500 people in the form of plasma which I need to live. This is serious folks. Even with infusions, we are not protected from COVID 19. Please take care of yourself and follow the CDC guidelines. It's not a joke. It's real and it's here. Stay ahead of the curve. God bless us all. I'm in no way panicking, just being vigilant and exercising caution.”
Rita Roman: “I've been preparing for this for years and years.... food and water...oops forgot about the toilet paper. I'm staying motivated and happy. P.S. Just got off a cruise last Sunday. Everyone is staying in touch via Facebook. No one is sick. Living my life!!!”
Cheryl Shumate: “Well I’m 63 yrs old and yes I’m taking this very seriously. I have diabetes and an immune deficiency disorder along with several other problems. I’m staying in away from people as much as I can. I’m not one that bought 100 rolls of TP but I would like to have gotten a bottle of hand sanitizer for when I am out. Thinking of all the elderly we have in our county. I do pray daily for our nation and watch CDC updates.”
Jill Minton Woodie: “I remember when I was a young girl hearing a preacher talking about a pandemic that would affect the entire World and there would be thousands of people die from it. I really hadn’t thought of this message until this pandemic. This is very serious and I’m afraid it is going to get a lot worse. It is no joking matter. We are dealing with a virus that the mortality rate is 10 times worse than the flu, no medicine or vaccine. Also, a person can have the virus and show no symptoms and that is why we need to stay home. The United States don’t have enough ventilators to handle this crisis. We all have got to work together and help stop the spread of this virus. People if at all possible stay home and use common sense that the LORD gave you. GOD HELP US.”
So far, there have been no reports of business closures in Wilkes due to the virus.
Tyson Foods has released its virus-related policy:
The company announced that it is only allowing visitors considered essential into its offices and facilities. The determination of who is essential will be made by Enterprise Leadership Team (ELT) members.
Tyson Foods also announced changes impacting hourly employees, including:
• relaxing attendance policies in processing plants by eliminating punitive effect for missing work due to illness;
• waiving the five-consecutive day waiting period for short term disability benefits;
• waiving the co-pay, co-insurance and deductible for doctor visits for COVID-19 testing as well as eliminating pre-approval or preauthorization steps;
• waiving co-pays for use of telemedicine;
• relaxing refill limits for 30 day prescriptions of maintenance medication.
Many corporate Tyson employees will work remotely through March 27.
Management will determine which business personnel will be asked to continue working in the corporate offices while others operate from home.
Late last month, Tyson Foods suspended all international business travel on commercial carriers. Effective immediately, all U.S. commercial business travel has also been suspended. Exceptions must be approved by an (ELT) member.
The company encouraged Tyson personnel to avoid personal travel via cruise ships, airplanes and other common carriers.
“Depending on where you travel, you may be subject to self-quarantine for 14 days when you return. You should consider this and your ability to work remotely before traveling.”
The CDC says “currently there is no evidence to support transmission of COVID-19 associated with food.”
In addition, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported, “There is no evidence at this time to suggest that the Coronavirus is a foodborne pathogen.”
The USDA also said, “We are not aware of any reports at this time of human illnesses that suggest COVID-19 can be transmitted by food or food packaging.”
Tyson has an internal coronavirus page with access to videos and information about the virus, as well as the company’s efforts to address it.
Schools Closed
Wilkes County Schools will be closed for at least two weeks.
This comes as a directive from N.C. Gov. Roy Cooper who ordered all K-12 public schools in North Carolina to close for a minimum of two weeks in response to COVID-19. The executive order also bans gatherings of more than 100 people.
Cooper stated: “We do not have the luxury of a wait-and-see approach. These are hard decisions but they are necessary so we can learn more about the virus,” Cooper said. “We do not want any regrets in the rearview mirror, and I am guided by one objective – doing what we must to keep people from getting sick and to make sure that those who do can get excellent care.”
Wilkes County School Superintendent Mark Byrd in a recorded message sent out Sunday.
Byrd stated, “Monday, March 16 will be a required teacher workday. Bus drivers, teacher assistants and child nutrition workers should not report to work until you have further information.
“Parents will be contacted early this week by your child’s school with information about how you can help your child focus on learning during this two-week window. Our website and social media will be updated with information about what students can do to obtain meal service during this closure, beginning Tuesday, March 17.”

In response to directives from North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and growing concerns about the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), Wilkes County officials have cancelled all mass gatherings of more than 100 people in Wilkes County through the end of April. Therefore, MerleFest 2020 has been cancelled. While this decision is disappointing for all of us, we fully support the directive from our county officials. The health, safety, and well-being of all involved with MerleFest is, and always will be, our primary concern.
As you all know, MerleFest serves as the largest fundraising event in support of the students of Wilkes Community College. The WCC Foundation, which plans and manages the festival each year, has already incurred significant costs in the lead up to MerleFest 2020.
We need your help. We are calling on all our loyal MerleFest fans and supporters to help alleviate the financial burden this puts on the college in this unprecedented moment of crisis. Please consider converting your festival purchase this year to a 100 percent tax deductible donation. This will help sustain the mission of MerleFest and its impact on WCC students.
We will be offering three options for those who have purchased MerleFest 2020 tickets through the official MerleFest ticketing system:
Option 1: Convert your purchase to a donation. Convert your festival purchase to a 100 percent tax deductible contribution to the WCC Foundation to help sustain the mission of MerleFest and its impact on WCC students.
Option 2: Roll your tickets forward. Ticket holders may roll purchases over to MerleFest 2021. This option allows fans to retain the same seat, package, parking, ticket, etc. at 2020 prices. The dates for next year’s festival are April 29 – May 2, 2021. Please consider the roll forward option in support of the festival.
Option 3: Refund. If for any reason, you feel that neither option 1 nor 2 is appropriate for you, we can certainly offer you a refund for your ticket order. All refunds must be requested by April 15. We will refund everything except service charges which are non-refundable.
IMPORTANT: All ticket holders must contact the MerleFest box office between March 16 and April 15 to confirm the option you are choosing. Failure to contact the box office by April 15 will result in an automatic roll forward of your tickets to 2021. You can contact the MerleFest box office Monday-Thursday 12 p.m.-5 p.m. and Friday 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Here are four ways to contact us:
Email: [email protected]

The event draws upwards to 80,000 participants from all over the country and the world each year and pumps million of dollars into the local economy and is WCC biggest fundraiser.
The Walker Center, also on the college campus, cancelled its Haggard Brothers with Special Guest Emi Sunshine concert that was scheduled for Friday, March 13. Center officials says they’re going to try to reschedule the event.
YMCA

As we navigate these challenges ahead, please know that we never make a decision to close Y facilities in haste.”
N.C. Courts
Chief Justice Beasley Announces Judicial Branch Response to COVID-19 (Coronavirus)Effective Monday, March 16, superior court and district court proceedings will be rescheduled for at least 30 days, with some exceptions.
In an order entered today (Friday, March 13), the Chief Justice has directed that local courts postpone most cases in district and superior court for at least 30 days. While the work of the courts must continue and courthouses remain open, the first priority of the court system must be the health and safety of the public and of the employees who serve them.
“We must be proactive in taking steps to prioritize the health and safety of our fellow North Carolinians while also maintaining the integrity of our judicial system,” said Chief Justice Beasley. “Today’s order will allow us to drastically reduce the exposure caused by crowded sessions of court, which often bring hundreds of people at a time into our courthouses.”
Although the superior courts and district courts remain open, effective Monday, March 16, superior court and district court proceedings will be rescheduled for at least 30 days, with some exceptions. These exceptions include (see more in the Supreme Court Order)
the proceeding will be conducted remotely;
the proceeding is necessary to preserve the right to due process of law (e.g. a first appearance or bond hearing, the appointment of counsel for an indigent defendant, a probation hearing, a probable cause hearing, etc.);
the proceeding is for the purpose of obtaining emergency relief (e.g. a domestic violence protection order, temporary restraining order, juvenile custody order, judicial consent to juvenile medical treatment order, civil commitment order, etc.); or the senior resident superior court judge, chief business court judge, or chief district court judge determines that the proceeding can be conducted under conditions that protect the health and safety of all participants.
This emergency directive does not apply to any proceeding in which a jury has already been empaneled or to any grand juries already empaneled. It also does not prohibit a judge or other judicial officer from exercising any in chambers or ex parte jurisdiction conferred by law upon that judge or judicial officer, as provided by law.
Additionally, the superior courts and district courts are encouraged to liberally grant additional accommodations to parties, witnesses, attorneys, and others with business before the courts who are at high risk of severe illness from COVID-19.
All counties will post a notice at all court facilities directing any person who has likely been exposed to COVID-19 to not enter the courthouse. Any person who has likely been exposed and has business before the courts should contact the clerk of superior court’s office by telephone or other remote means for further instruction.
As the courts work to postpone thousands of cases, court officials will notify parties and their attorneys of new hearing and trial dates.
The Judicial Branch will be providing continuous updated information and answers to frequently asked questions on our website, NCcourts.gov. The public is encouraged to visit NCcourts.gov as a first resort to determine if a question can be answered without calling the local courthouse.
Sports and Field Trips
Also on Thursday, March 12, Wilkes County Schools released the following announcement:
“Effective March 12. 2020, Wilkes County Schools will suspend all field trips and will reevaluate this in early April. Wilkes County Schools will follow the recommendation of the NCHSAA (North Carolina High School Athletic Association)
and suspend the Spring Sports Season at the conclusion of tonight’s games (Thursday, March 12, 2020). This decision impacts practices as well as scheduled games for both middle and high schools.
Per the Governor’s recommendation, all gatherings of more than 100 people should be postponed. The governor did not recommend school closings at this time.
Again, we appreciate your understanding as we make decisions to ensure the safety of our students and our staff.”

But back to the hoarding hysteria
Apparently it has become somewhat out of hand.
One local business manager was heard saying that law enforcement had to be on hand as guards when trucks hauling restock items arrive at their store, and added that thefts of items were becoming more commonplace.
Another manager told about how some were taking advantage of the situation and buying up the most sought after goods and attempting to pirate them on the internet. They were allegedly caught and stopped.
According to one internet report a bottle of hand sanitizer bought for $8 at a drug store sold the same day for $138 on a website.
And there are cases of downright rudeness.
“Some people act like it’s my own personal fault that we’re out of certain items,” another manager said.

Staying Safe When Shopping During Corona Epidemic
With a new virus declared a pandemic several might be still figuring out how to maintain the required guidelines while shopping for groceries or other essentials in India
During the Coronavirus pandemic situation, most countries around the world have announced a complete lockdown and strictly advise their citizens to practice social distancing and avoid crowding. Staying home is the safest thing one can do this time. However, certain essential items will be needed such as grocery shops or pharmacies but at a bare minimum. Maintaining certain safety standards while shopping for essential products can help in preventing any unnecessary risks of infection and help people stay protected.
Here are some important coronavirus tips to keep safe when shopping for essentials during COVID-19:
1. Plan Ahead
A good way to start is to prepare a list of essentials at the beginning of the month. The list should comprise what is needed from the grocery store, pharmacy or other important items. This can help people to avoid any re-visits and also not over the shop. It’s also important to plan when an individual is going to the store. Try to schedule the visits during non-peak hours to avoid as much crowd as possible.
2. Wear a Face Mask
Always wear a mask after stepping out of the house. It is very important to cover your mouth and protect yourself from catching or spreading any disease.
3. Carry Your Own Bag
As a preventive measure, people may also choose to carry their own carry bag. Before carrying, do not forget to sanitize them. For personal safety, it is better to carry a personal sanitizer as it may not be possible for many people to wash their hands on the go all the time. Also, sanitize the cart before using it. Clean the handle of the cart or basket with a sanitizer or disinfectant before touching them.
4. Going Alone
To maintain Social Distancing it is easier if you travel alone and not tag along with others as this will put pressure on the system being followed in public spaces. Do not leave in groups or pairs since it can become difficult in maintaining a long queue due to Social Distancing.
5. Maintaining Physical Distancing
Droplets or discharges from the mouth or nose released through a cough or a sneeze may contain the virus which can travel up to 2 meters. Ensure you maintain 6 feet distance from other shoppers. Stand in the queue and wait for your turn. If you feel someone is standing closer to them then they can politely ask them to move back.
6. Buy Only What Is Needed
Do not rush to buy what is not really required. There might be others who need them and hoarding food items will lead to a disturbance in the demand and supply of goods.
7. Consider Carrying Your Own Disinfectants
While this approach might not be necessary, you may carry disinfectants like an alcohol-based sanitizers as a precautionary measure. It might not be possible to wash your hands all the time when shopping, hence, a hand sanitizer can be easier to disinfect your hands.
8. Opt For Non-Touch Payment Option
There are various payment options available nowadays, such as Phone-Pay, Google Pay, Paytm, and many more for the sake of people’s comfort and safety. People can opt for these options instead of handing out cash and exchanging currencies. This will help to reduce the spread of germs.
9. Avoid Going Out If Someone is at High Risk
If an individual has a higher chance of infection from COVID-19, then they are advised to stay at home. This includes old aged people, especially those over 60, or people having heart or lung diseases and diabetes. It is better if they have someone else who can do the shopping for them. This is not only important for their health but for others also.
10. Wash Your Hands or Use a Sanitizer After Touching Any Surface
You all must have heard this being said a lot all around but it’s a very crucial guideline to follow. Make sure to be aware of any high-touch surface and remember to wash hands thoroughly or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer right after that.
Here are the absolute times when you should be washing your hands:
After coming home from outside
Before unpacking the items you bought
After sneezing or coughing, in case an individual hasn’t used a tissue
After touching a high-touch surface
11. Sanitize the Products After Buying
After unpacking all the items, wash them with warm or hot water, and sanitize them properly. Do not use it without sanitization. People can use disinfecting wipes also.
12. Download the Aarogya Setu Application
Download the Aarogya Setu app before stepping out. The National Informatics Centre has launched this application to track information on Covid-19. This can help track your movement activities and alert if a person is at low, moderate or high risk.

The Need to Practice Social Distancing During Ramadan
After months of waiting, the blessed month of Ramadan is finally here but some of its celebrations have been dampened because of the coronavirus pandemic. No longer can you have iftar parties with your friends and family, enjoy praying Taraweh together in the mosque, and do anything that gathers a community as COVID-19 spreads from human to human contact. A lockdown is in effect in nearly all countries and people are advised to do all their shopping, dining, and other activities at home.
Given that we are observing the holy month of Ramadan, special groceries need to be purchased to meet the Sehri and iftar needs. Thankfully, best grocery stores are onboard howmuch so you can order anything and everything you want within minutes! You don’t need to go out and risk yourself to the virus.
Social distancing is hard during this month considering that Ramadan is the month where there are a lot of gatherings, exchange of food and celebrations as a community. This is why so many people are concerned with how to practice it. You can celebrate Ramadan while social distancing, it’s unusual, yes, but it’s also the need of time. So here are the few ways you can celebrate Ramadan while continuing social distancing:
Don’t Make Unnecessary Shopping Trips:
I have seen a lot of people unnecessarily going to grocery shopping because it’s the only way they can leave their homes and have some social interaction. I know these are horrible times, but we need to take precautions against coronavirus. You need to avoid going for grocery shopping every day, in fact, try to limit it once a month. Make a comprehensive list and buy everything you need in one go!
It’s best to just shop groceries online. You can select the products you want by browsing through an app, add the things you need in the card and order away. Howmuch offers delivery within 24 hours, so why bother going to a grocery store and risking your life as well as of those you love?
Avoid social gatherings:
I know a lot of people look forward to Ramadan because of Sehri and iftar gatherings. After fasting for the entire day, you get to fulfil your body’s craving for food and water with your family and friends. Sehri gatherings have also become a common thing in our society where friends or family decide to go to some restaurant or order in sehri. Yeah, both sehri and iftar gatherings need to be stopped for protecting the health of you and those you love.
You can, instead, have virtual gatherings. Technology has advanced so much that we can have everyone in the room even when they aren’t physically in the room! Get your friends and family on video calls and enjoy a lovely meal with them without endangering anyone’s life!
Online Donations:
Yes, it’s the month of Ramadan, and we all like to do charity because it is heavily rewarded by Allah (SWT). A lot of people also like to give their Zakat during this Holy Month but we need to keep in mind to maintain social distancing while doing so.
There are so many low-income families and daily wage earners that are suffering heavily because of the corona outbreak. Welfare societies come in contact with them and are great for passing on your donations. So, it’s best to donate to these welfare organizations online. Steps To Disinfect Household Surfaces To Remove Coronavirus
By this point, coronavirus has taken it's worst form in most of the countries. If we are conscious enough, we ought to protect ourselves from this pandemic.
As far as now we are aware of how to properly wash our hands like wet, lather, scrub, rinse, dry. But, are you aware of the proper steps to disinfect household surfaces to remove Coronavirus? Today, Canwinn Foundation will discuss the right way to sanitize the various surfaces in our home.
Here's how to disinfect your iPhone
As collected information from the Apple company, you can use Clorox disinfectant wipes on your iPhone. Though, it wasn't advice previously.
Don't use aerosol spray.
Household Hygiene
Good household hygiene involves cleansing and sanitizing the same areas you use on regular days. Studies suggest paying attention to food preparation surfaces and other high-touch surfaces. These surfaces include light switches, faucets, remote controls, doorknobs, refrigerator doors, and microwave handles, and your computer keyboard. Don't panic! Just use a smart cleaning process with targeted hygiene throughout the day and week.

These surfaces include light switches, faucets, remote controls, doorknobs, refrigerator doors, and microwave handles, and your computer keyboard. Don't panic! Just use a smart cleaning process with targeted hygiene throughout the day and week.
What to use while sanitizing your home
Eliminate any visible dirt and grime before disinfecting, this will enhance the ability of disinfectants. After that, use tried-and-true disinfectants such as bleach (sodium hypochlorite), hydrogen peroxide (hydrogen peroxide expires six months after opening but can last up to three years unopened), grain alcohol (ethanol, found in beverages) and brushing (isopropyl) alcohol.
Note: Any over-the-counter disinfectant products are
If you purchase any over-the-counter products it is required to meet government specifications. To make sure if the product has met all government requirements for effectiveness, look for an EPA registration number on the label.
Besides, buy the product with an alcohol content of 60 percent or higher. After spraying the disinfectants, wait for 30 seconds to several minutes (check the label for timing) to effectively kill a germ or virus.
Usage of Bleach
It is one of the most inexpensive disinfecting agents. It comes with label instruction with which you can create a bleach/water solution. In addition, you can follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommended recipe of a third-cup bleach per gallon of water or four teaspoons bleach per quart of water.
Note: Avoid mixing bleach and ammonia, as it creates a dangerous and potentially deadly chlorine gas.
Different Surface
If you are going to clean the hard and durable surfaces, consider using any disinfectant you have on hand. These hard surfaces that are chemically resistant include metals, granite or tiles.
To clean porous surfaces including marble, you should consult the surface manufacturers’ recommendations to avoid any damage.
Furthermore, for porous material, never use any acidic cleaners.
To disinfecting any surfaces that come into contact with food, use water washing after the disinfectant dries.
Because glasses are chemically inert, you can use any disinfectant and cleaner on them.
More things to keep in mind:
After receiving mail or boxes into your house, consider washing your hands carefully. Use a disinfectant on the outside of reusable shopping and grocery bags.
Sanitize yourself and your house carefully to prevent the spread of the current pandemic, novel coronavirus. It is very important to keep yourself up to date and follow the methods released by authorized organizations. Moreover, contact Canwinn Foundation if you have any queries. This organization has been helping people to keep them away from coronavirus and the other problems arising from it.

Some People Are Acting Like Complete “Covidiots”, And Here Are 44 Pics To Prove This
Our lives are changing and we’re finding out that adapting to the “new normal” is harder than it looks on paper.

McDonald’s in China apologized after one of the restaurant’s branches in Guangzhou stopped black people from going inside. The company temporarily closed down the restaurant when it found out about the notice. Online rumors about the coronavirus circulating in Guangzhou led to hundreds of Africans being evicted from apartments and hotels just last week.

Tea, beer, garlic: How world copes with lockdown
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/tea-beer-garlic-how-world-copes-with-lockdown/
Tea, beer, garlic: How world copes with lockdown
In the US it was toilet paper, in Mexico it’s beer and in France, predictably, flour. The goods missing from stores reveal how the world is coping with coronavirus lockdowns.
The winner for most bizarre shortage of 2020 is Afghanistan, where a rumour about a mustachioed newborn advising the purchase of black tea sent people flocking to the shops.
“I will live for two hours and have come to tell you that black tea is the cure to this virus,” reads the quote accompanying a picture of the baby, purportedly from the eastern province of Nangarhar, widely shared on Facebook.
The run on the ubiquitous black tea briefly tripled prices before the rush calmed.
In Mexico, beer — along with tequila — is a drink of choice.
When the country went into its lockdown, the two national beer giants Heineken and Grupo Modelo – which makes the country’s beloved and now unfortunately-named Corona brand – announced they would stop producing.
That prompted a wave of panic purchases and a defiant Twitter campaign: #ConLaCervezaNo, or “Don’t mess with the beer.”
Sri Lanka tried to keep its population from engaging in such vices: it has enforced a total ban on alcohol and cigarettes since its lockdown began on March 20, leading to an explosion in home brewing, an excise official said.
The do-it-yourself distilling has caused a run on sugar, a key ingredient in producing the local moonshine known as kasippu.
There had even been suspected “staged” robberies of liquor stores as shop owners tried to sell the precious commodity under the radar.
– Sound mind, sound body –
In Iraq, staying at home means long afternoons watching television or chatting with relatives – and that requires salted sunflower seeds.
Supermarkets are running out of the popular snack faster than ever as parents and students wile away hours they would have normally spent at work or school.
For Libyans in the war-ravaged capital Tripoli, homeschooling has been particularly tough.
“We’ve run out of printer paper, so I’ve fished out all of my husband’s unused old office agendas for them to write down lessons and solve math exercises,” said Nadia al-Abed, a stay-at-home mother with three young children whose school has been shuttered.
“I’ve been begging them to write as small as they possibly can, bribing them with candy,” she added.
Schools, airports and non-essential businesses around the world have been shut down for weeks as countries try to curb the novel coronavirus’ lightning-fast spread.
Some are looking to protect themselves by naturally boosting their immunity.
The former Soviet countries of Central Asia have seen a boom in demand — and in prices — for wild rue.
The herb, also known as harmala, is traditionally burned in households to ward off illness and protect prosperity.
In Bulgaria, people scrambled to buy ginger and lemons as immunity strengtheners, while in Tunisia, citizens hunted down garlic – despite World Health Organization warnings that these home remedies do nothing against the novel coronavirus.
– Pastries and plants –
Far and away the most popular coping mechanism, however, has been baking.
Supermarkets across France, Spain, Greece and other parts of Europe have reported shortages in flour, chocolate and yeast as cooped-up citizens try their hand at elaborate cakes.
France’s entrepreneurial home bakers skip the overwhelmed grocery stores and buy the raw ingredients directly from their local bakeshop to use at home.
Romanians joke about “yeast dealers” making a fortune selling the now-rare leavening agent on the black market.
Fake real estate ads even offer to “swap a downtown flat for one pound of yeast”.
And with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan starting, households are stocking up on ingredients for the large sunset meals that will break their daily fasts.
That has made semolina, a golden wheat flour used for bread and pastries, a precious commodity in Algeria.
“The small quantities that are delivered to me, I reserve them for my regular customers,” said a shop owner in El-Ashour, a district of Algiers.
In Argentina, it’s eggs: 30 of them once cost just 160 pesos, or $2.35, but now run at 240 pesos or $3.52.
If many countries emerge from their lockdowns with a new class of professional chefs, Australia will see home gardens blooming all over the country.
“We’ve seen an increase in popularity across all plant types over the past month,” said Alex Newman of the Bunnings Warehouse hardware store.
In a sign that Australians are bracing themselves for a longer lockdown, Bunnings’ most popular online guide includes tips on the fastest-growing plants to create a screen from neighbours — providing extra privacy for those staying at home.
