Natasha Romanoff x Reader : Escape

Summary: The Red Room haunts you, from the moment you stepped foot inside to long after you’ve left. Truth is, you don’t think there is any escaping it.

Warnings: 18+ Violence, Depression, Mentions of Death, Smut

Chapter 12

****** 

A lab. A safehouse. A barn. A warehouse. Hell you wouldn’t be surprised if you’d ended up in a empty field. But a diner? You didn’t expect to be here. 

Scott, Steve, and Natasha seemed more interested in the Doctor. 

You can’t say you’re shocked. After the very obvious complications he was having before, you figured he’d end up fixing it. Seeing the Hulk so, human, was different but not surprising.

“Come on, I feel like I'm the only one eating.” He nudges the plate towards you and Natasha,“ try some of that. Have some eggs.” 

You raise an eyebrow at the people at the table before looking at the plate. With a shrug, you grab a fork and eat some eggs. Finding that they taste pretty good, you eat some more.

Natasha smiles a little at you, shaking her head and then looking at Bruce.

“I’m so confused.” Scott is the first to speak.

Bruce nods,“ these are confusing times.”

“No, no, that’s not what I mean.”

With a sigh, Bruce says,“ no, I get it. I'm kidding! I know. It's crazy. I'm wearing shirts now.”

You can’t help but chuckle at that. Of all the confusing things that’s going on with the man, wearing clothes isn’t that big a deal. 

“Yeah!” Scott exclaims,“ wh- How? Why?” He frowns.

A somber expression takes over Bruce’s face,“ five years ago, we got our asses beaten. Except it was worse for me. Because I lost twice. First, Hulk lost, then Banner lost. Then, we all lost.”

There’s no part of you that could one hundred percent understand what Bruce had felt during all of that. Still, if it hurt you to lose to Thanos, you know it’s so much worse for him.

“No one blamed you, Bruce.” Your wife tries reassuring him.

Still, he shakes his head,“ I did.” He explains his acceptance of the hulk, briefly mentions the process of doing so, and expresses his pride of becoming this better version of himself. 

You have to admit that it is nice to see that he’s doing better. 

Conversation stops at the presence of three little kids. They take a picture with Bruce and then get into a small spat with Scott before leaving. 

Eventually Steve directs the conversation back to the important topic. Only for Bruce to point out that’s a little above his paygrade. 

“You managed to pull this off. I remember a time where this seemed pretty impossible too.” Natasha encourages. 

Bruce’s eyes watch her, trusting the emotion in her eyes. With one look around the table, taking in Scott and Steve’s hopeful expressions, he agrees to come back to the compound to try. 

Still you all don’t leave until Bruce is finished eating. You’d helped put away some of the food, eating some more eggs and a couple sausages but steering clear of the overly large pancakes.

Minutes later you’re all climbing into the Quinjet. Natasha and Steve both head to the pilots seats leaving you, Bruce, and Scott behind. 

You’re already sitting and paging through a book noncommittally when Bruce decides to join you. He sits in the two chairs beside, resting back on the chair and the wall.

“Sup Doc.” You greet, shutting the book and looking up at him.

“Hey Y/N, how you been?” 

A thoughtful expression passes your face,“ truthfully better than ever.”

“That’s great.” He nods, looking over at Natasha,“ I’m guessing married life is treating you well.”

Your eyes fall over to your wife as well,“ it has it’s ups and downs. But I couldn’t be happier.”

While there use to be a longing look on his face you can now see how he’s simply happy that Natasha is happy. 

Conversation between you two shifts from Natasha to the “time heist” as Scott calls it.

“Be honest, do you think this’ll work?” You ask him quietly. 

A frustrated hand runs up his face and through his hair,“ there’s a chance.”

“Bruce. There’s a ‘chance’ to fix climate change. There’s a ‘chance’ to solve poverty. I’m gonna need this to be a little more than a chance for me to trust this plan.”

“Sorry Y/N, that’s all I can give you.” 

Shaking your head, you slouch in your seat.

Thoughts race through your mind, all of them connected to one single thought. You don’t want Natasha to get hurt again. 

Losing the first time shook her, nearly destroyed her and you’d struggled to pick up the pieces it left her in. At times you knew that even though she took comfort in your presence and she appreciated you being there, it wasn’t enough. And as much as you hate to admit it, you still aren’t enough. 

Natasha loves you and you’d never deny or doubt that but you’d never be able to replace or even fill the gap of the family she’d lost. Brothers and sisters, her friends and partners. 

You see the hope filling her and the last thing you want is for her to be let down. Essentially having to lose all over again. 

By the time you get to the compound the sun is setting. 

With the sky painted in shades of yellow and red, you decide to go to the roof. A slight breeze makes it just barely chilly so you continue on, sitting yourself on the roof’s ledge and looking out over the lake.

Taking a deep breath, you sort through your thoughts.

Admittedly you start to feel bad, almost upset with yourself. It’s so incredibly selfish of you to prioritize Natasha over the rest of the universe. You’re not wishing that the world stay this way but you’ve managed to have more than you could’ve ever wanted and the prospect of an even better future with Natasha hangs in the balance of this plan. 

You can’t help but think that you’ve gone from one extreme to the other. In the past you’d completely disregarded your desires, so much so that you allowed yourself to be used by HYDRA and the KGB. And now you’re so sure of what you want that you’re borderline willing to leave things the way they are. 

In truth, all you need is assurance. You need a guarantee that this will work with little to no consequences. Natasha needs to be safe from any possible downfalls. Your new found friends and family can’t be in harms way at all. It’d be ideal to save yourself. 

Part of you knows that if you have to sacrifice yourself to ensure Natasha gets everything she could ever want, you will. Insane really, since your point is to not lose her, but if it meant her happiness it’d be worth it. 

Lost in thought, you don’t pay attention to the door that opens and shuts. Nor do you anticipate the presence of the blonde behind you.

“I have to say, I’m surprised you’ve been so quiet about all of this.”

Turning around, your eyes trail over Steve’s tall and muscular form. You sigh and face forward again.

Steve moves to sit beside you,“ I didn’t miss what you said at Tony’s. And I don’t know much of anything about your past, still I assume you’ve gone through a lot so risking what you have now with Natasha isn’t ideal.”

You scoff,“ ideal? No Steve, it’s not an option. Don’t get me wrong, I want to help bring everyone back, I lost people too, but we don’t even know if this will work. Tony had a point, multiple ones but mainly, what if we screw everything up even worse than it already is.”

“We can’t focus on the negative side of this-”

“You won’t even consider the negative side. Optimism is nice but not blind optimism. If you expect me to even begin to trust this plan I need you to be realistic.” 

His crystal blue eyes follow you as you stand and step away from the ledge. He follows, crossing his arms as he stands in front of you. 

“Be real with me and yourself, right here, right now. How confident are you that this works?”

Instead of an instant reply, Steve takes a deep breath, his shoulders moving as he releases it. You don’t miss the way his fingers rapidly tap against his arm.

Finally he speaks,“ I can’t promise that things won’t change. I can’t promise that there won’t be risks. All I know is that we have to try, if we don’t we’re no better than every bad guy I’ve crossed.” 

A moment of silence. You process his words, observe the honesty in them and even the slight bit of hesitation that displays in his eyes before he looks away. 

“Look, Steve, you’re a good guy and you’re a hero through and through. I’m sure there’s no shortage of sacrifices you’d make to save the world, but,” running a hand through your hair, you take the smallest of steps forward,“ if there’s even the slightest chance that something happens to Natasha I’m out.”

He looks up at you, not expecting what’s been implied by you. 

Yes, you’re willing to try. No, you didn’t expect to cave to quickly. You blame those steely blue eyes.

A breath of relief leaves him and he nods. With that established between you two, you leave the roof. 

Inside the compound you go your separate ways, your destination being the lab. 

Surprisingly, you don’t find Bruce there, which you’re partly grateful for. Being left with your thoughts now isn’t so bad, in fact it helps you work better. 

Your current project is a new suit for Natasha. 

It’s inspired by Tony’s suit. The nanotech sits in the Black Widow symbol of her belt and is activated with a simple touch. You made sure to keep it as form fitting as possible so it doesn’t hinder her speed or agility. 

Instead of repulsor beams like Tony’s suit, it shoots electricity, mimicking the voltage of her widow’s bites. You maintained the same durability, adaptability, and power that Tony’s suit has. Not being as clever as Tony the A.I. you created was simply named Assist and doesn’t stand for anything.

Lastly ensuring that it’s fitted with Natasha’s go to weapons: a staff/batons and the standard pistols. 

You’re in the lab well into the early hours of the next morning and the lack of your presence isn’t unnoticed by Natasha.

Despite having been in deep conversation with Bruce and Scott about the upcoming time travel test, she went to search for you.

She hadn’t realized how much she actually missed your presence until she started looking for you. When she finally gets to your lab there are tears in her eyes. 

Her sniffle grabs your attention. You’re instantly on alert, completely disregarding your work to focus all your attention on your girl.

“What’s wrong love?” You reach for her hands, slowly just in case physical comfort isn’t what she wants.

Instead she steps into your body, wrapping her arms around you and pressing her face against your chest.

“I miss you.” 

You just barely catch her words but your heart tugs at the sad tone of her voice. 

“I didn’t mean to be away from you so long Tash, I’m sorry.” Stroking her hair, you glance at the clock that reads three eleven.“ How about we get to bed yeah?”

She nods against you,“ can we get ice cream first?”

With a chuckle you agree to it.

A couple hours later, after ice cream and a much needed sleep, you regroup in the empty hangar of the compound. 

You clutch a cup of coffee in your hands, standing behind Natasha and away from the equipment. The sun pours light through the floor to ceiling windows, agitating your groggy state, as the coffee has not taken full effect yet.

Your forehead rests on your wife’s shoulder as she taps away on the tablet in her hands, simultaneously speaking with Scott and Bruce about the plan. 

Eventually they’re ready, running a check of all operations. For some reason you feel like they’re missing something but your brain isn’t functioning at full speed just yet.

Who’s idea was it to do this at seven in the morning?

“Okay, here we go.” Bruce speaks up, causing you to stand up straight and sip your coffee.“ Time travel test number one. Scott, fire up the uhhh, the van thing.” 

Taking a quick second to gather yourself, you roll your shoulders, and move to stand beside Natasha just before Steve comes back in, letting you all know that he’s set the breakers and back up generators.

“Good. 'Cause if we blow the grid, I don't wanna lose Tiny here in the 1950's.”

A laugh falls from you before you can stop it but you instantly shut up as Natasha levels you with a look. Then she, Steve, and Scott look at Bruce concerned.

“Excuse me?” Scott ceases to adjust his suit.

Natasha shakes her head,“ he's kidding. You can't say things like that!” She tries to give a reassuring smile to Scott.

“Jus- it was a bad joke.” Bruce fumbles, obviously having meant it.

“You were kidding, right?” Natasha asks after Scott turns away.

“I have no idea. We're talking about time travel here. Either it's all a joke, or none of it is.” The green man whispers before looking to Clint,“ we're good! Get your helmet on, Scott. I'm gonna send you back a week, let you walk around for an hour, then bring you back in 10 seconds. Makes sense?”

Safe to say Scott is confused by that, but a little bit of encouragement from Steve has him ready to go. 

With wide eyes, you watch the failure of a time travel test. Scott went in, only to come back as a child, an old man, and then a baby. Natasha and Steve look on in shock, before panicking and telling Bruce to bring adult Scott back.

“Y/N when I say so, kill the power.”

Nodding, you head over to the lever. Bruce presses some buttons then shouts now. You flip it and normal Scott reappears.

“Time travel!” Bruce exclaims, arms wide.

Everyone looks at him.

Shaking your head, you start to walk away,“ I need more coffee.”

Natasha starts to follow after you as Steve leaves to get air. 

Once the two of you are in the kitchen and you’ve refilled your coffee, you turn to Natasha.

Her emerald eyes look incredibly tired and she’s slouching. You’d thought this new found plan would ease her stress but she seems to be fairing exactly as she had in the past weeks.

You set your cup down, walking closer to her, and sliding your hands over her hips.

“I feel stupid for asking but, how are you?”

She leans into you,“ I don’t want to think what’ll happen if this doesn’t work.”

You nod, pressing a kiss to the top of her head,“ then don’t. There’s no reason to give up hope just yet.”

It’s quiet for mere seconds, and then-

“Well aren’t you two the perfect picture of love.”

Tony’s voice never ceases to make you roll your eyes. If you didn’t already like him you’re sure you’d have punched his cheeky ass a long time ago.

“Of course we are.” You look over at him,“ what’re you doing here?’

“Just sticking around so I can take all the credit when we save the universe.” He smirks.

Natasha perks up at that, suspecting that the genius has figured it out. His seemingly permanent knowing and cocky smirk tells you that he did.

Let It Be Me - MLQC - Gavin x MC

Well....hello there.  I’m new to Tumblr (or, new to being back--I was here for a while but fairly quite and then left for a bit, only to return once I realized I still was regularly checking some of my favorite pages/writers!).  I’ve been reading fan fiction for a looonnnggggg time, but have only ever been and enjoyer and not a contributor.  I don’t know if I will ever be a regular writer, but decided to give it a shot.  I saw some writing prompts posted by a writer I really enjoy, and as I was thinking through a request I would like to make and stories I would like to see, I got the bug to just give one a try myself!  So here we are.  I’d like to shout out @hifftn​ for taking the time to read my rough draft and give me some suggestions--this was my first time reaching out to her and she was so kind and amazing and I have been following her page for a good while now, so thank you! I love the MLQC and Voltage fandoms and I’m excited to actually be active now and to give kudos to some of my favorites writers where they are due (because I am convinced that some of the best writers out there are housed here!). 

So here’s my very first stab at writing.  I don’t expect it to be read by many (or maybe any) but I think it’s good for me to try new things every once in a while.  If you do happen to read it and want to give some tips/suggestions/encouragement/anything I’d love to have it!  Here’s hoping the format isn’t crazy--thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

Gavin.

The boy who everyone seemed to fear when you were growing up—including you. 

Gavin.

The now man who took his job seriously to protect those around him…and as he regularly stated--to protect you.

Gavin.

The one who, after time, had been such a confidant and the one you could always rely on. Through job stresses, and heartbreak and messy break ups and all the ups and downs of life. A firm and steady rock when you felt like the waves—constantly raging. Constantly changing.

Gavin.

The one who you viewed as just a friend until more time went on. And the more you got to see who he truly is—the Gavin that only you seemed to get to see, the more you wondered “what if”.

But you.

You were too afraid of losing the person that meant the most to you, afraid he may not see you that way.  So you decided to keep those “what ifs” at bay and push them out of sight and out of mind, satisfied knowing that he really did mean it, that he would protect you and be there for you forever. There wasn’t a doubt in your mind that his words were true. And you were stuck chasing the wrong person and after the wrong person hoping maybe someday someone squash the “what ifs” away.

After a great finish on your latest project, Willow, Kiki, and Anna insisted on a night of drinks and dancing. You weren’t one to typically go for that, but you’d been working so hard and sometimes it really was nice to let loose with your friends. You agreed to at least one stop and you’d take it from there.  The four of you walked into a crowded bar with live music and found a small table towards the back as your home base for the evening. A couple of rounds in, you could feel yourself loosen up and were ready to see where the night would take you. 

“Next round is on me! I’m getting us shots!” you told the girls as you headed to the bar. 

You had been waiting at the bar for a couple of minutes when you “ahem” and a deep voice that exuded confidence. 

“My, my. I don’t think I’ve seen you around before and I know that I’d remember your face if I’d ever seen it. I’m Michael—and you would be?” 

You rolled your eyes as you turned his way, only to be pleasantly surprised.  The man talking to you had reason to have confidence in his voice.  He had dark hair that was just long enough to slick back with a small piece that hung just above his eye.  He was well-dressed--maroon slacks and a button-up shirt that had obviously been tailor to perfectly show that he was fit underneath it all. 

“MC”, you tried shouting back over the music and the crowd noise.

He slid right next to you and leaned in closer to your ear—a bit closer than you expected from a stranger you had never met, but you didn’t immediately blow him off. 

“I didn’t quite hear you, and I want to make sure I don’t miss the name of the most beautiful girl in the room”.

“I said my name is MC, and while I appreciate the compliment and you’re not too bad on the eyes yourself, I’ve really got to get going. I’m here with my friends—have a nice night”.

You gave him a wink and turned to walk away, but he grabbed your hand right before you were out of reach.

“At least consider saving a dance for me before the night is over. I’ll make it worth your time,” he said winking right back at you after pulling you closer.  

You couldn’t help but smirk—there was no lying to yourself. He was an extremely attractive guy with a smile that was dripping with charm. Not wanting to commit to anything while fully knowing you’d end up dancing, you left him with a flirty: “Maybe, if you’re lucky,” and turned to go back to your table.

“Who was that? He was cute.” Kiki couldn’t help herself--she had a radar for attractive men and she was always in favor when you considered chatting one up.

“His name was Michael—he very much so wants to dance with me tonight—I don’t know. He’s cute, I guess. I think he thinks he’s a real smooth talker…maybe a bit pushy, though.”

“Maybe pushy could be a good thing! You’ll get to find out if you actually go dance with him, if you know what I mean. He’s still got his eye on you”, Kiki said smiling at you and nudging your side with her elbow. 

She wasn’t wrong. He was looking your way. And his look seemed to follow your every move.

“He seems a little creepy to me,'' Anna said. “I’d steer clear”. It was from her expression that she was not Team New Guy.

“I’m with Anna,” Willow said. “Besides, I still don’t understand why you even give some of these guys you talk to the time of day when you have the perfect person for you right under your nose”.

They all saw the way you were around Gavin. You tried to play cool but every once in a while, there was a crack in your façade and your friends could recognize the change in your eyes and the way your shoulders seemed to relax in a way they normally didn’t when he was around.  You always got flustered when they brought Gavin in any way that involved you being more than friends--it was easy to push down any budding feelings when it wasn’t brought to your attention. 

“You guys need to give it up. I care about my friendship with Gavin way too much to risk it. And besides—if he was interested in being more than friends with me, he’s had a lot of opportunities to take a shot. He hasn’t, and that’s okay. I’ve come to terms with it. And I’ve also come to terms with the fact that one dance with Mister Following Eyes won’t hurt anyone”. You downed another shot and marched back to the bar to find Michael, confidence coming from you to rival the confidence he had earlier.  You insisted he’d buy you a drink before taking his hand, leading him to the dance floor.

And you danced. You closed your eyes and let his hands wander on your hips and you let your imagination wander into the idea that it was actually Gavin dancing with you, because no matter how many times you said you had come to terms with it, you really hadn’t and you wanted nothing more than for him to be the one touching you. 

 What you didn’t know was that Willow had called Gavin to come out and celebrate your success with you all. And that while you were grinding up on Mr. Smooth Talker, Gavin was walking in the door.

After losing yourself in the music and dancing, you finally “came to” when the house band took a break and lighter music began to play over the speaker. You started to turn back around towards Michael when you caught a sight of Gavin out of the corner of your eye. You didn’t know he was going to be here and you didn’t know how long he’d been there—or what he had seen. Gavin was always the one to let you cry on his shoulder when you’d go out with some guy you met at a bar or on Tinder after he’d stand you up or finally show you his true ugly and awful colors. And he was never critical. And he was always gentle. But that didn’t mean that you wanted him to see you dancing with someone else when you just wanted it to be him.

Michael pulled you out of your head when he grabbed your hand and pulled you back closer to him, this time face to face, moving in closer to whisper.  You could feel his breath on your ear.

“If you move like that with your clothes on, I can’t wait to see how good it is once they’re gone.”

That’s when you knew your time with this guy was over.  You couldn’t help but roll your eyes. Why must men always do this? You knew why—because an MC a few more drinks in would entertain the thought of it and might just go home with him. But you were a few shots short and had one set too many eyes on you to agree.  The freedom and fun you were feeling was put back in it’s box to make sure this guy knew you were serious.

“I think you might be moving a bit too fast pal. Thanks for the dance, but I think I’m going to go back to my friends now.”

You tried to push him away so you could leave when he decided to double down and grab your hips a bit tighter, this time in a way that caused the exact opposite of pleasure.

“Come on, MC. We’re just getting to know each other, and I’m not ready for the fun to be over” he said.  He tried nipping at your ear and you felt sick to your stomach.  You just wanted to get away from him.

“Stop it, Michael. You’re hurting me. I don’t know you and you obviously don’t know me if you think aggression is the way into my pants. So if you could kindly back the fuck up, I’d appreciate it,” you said, pushing him harder to get him off of you.  You were all for having a good time and had had your fair share of one night stands--but they were on your own terms and they didn’t start with a guy trying to suffocate you with a handful of red flags to get you to cave.

“Stop being such a bitch—I buy you a drink and show you a good time and this is how you repay me?”

A clearing of a throat came from behind you and you saw Michael’s face change as you felt a familiar hand on your shoulder.

“MC—is this guy bothering you?”

The sound of Gavin’s voice and the anger in his eyes was the encouragement Michael needed to finally ease us his grip on you.  Thank God he was stepping in to help you. But also, oh shit—because Gavin did not act kindly to asshole dudes who wouldn’t leave you alone.

“Hey buddy—why don’t fuck right off and mind your own damn business?” Michael said, annoyance clear in his voice and on his face.  He had no idea who he was talking to.

And then came the crack. And a howl. And an asshole falling to the ground after Gavin decked him for not giving up when you asked him to. Gavin grabbed your hand and started walking towards the door. Anna, Willow, and Kiki met you there.

“MC, are you okay?” Kiki asked.  She was worried about you, and you could tell she felt bad about encouraging you to talk to Michael after the initial introduction.

“I knew that guy was a creep,” Anna said with crossed arms. She always seemed to be right about these things.

“How about we all go outside and I’ll call us an Uber,” Willow said, pulling out her phone.

“You guys take care of getting yourselves home,” Gavin said, handing them some cash. “I’ll take care of her—my apartment isn’t far from here”.

You felt awful--what was supposed to be a night of fun had turned into a nightmare. “Sorry for ruining the night guys. Maybe next time I’ll learn to just dance with you guys,” you said with your head downcast, taking the helmet Gavin handed you before patting the back seat of Sparky. You knew the drill. You hopped on and wrapped your arms around Gavin’s waist as he told you to hold on tight.

“You’re soaked,” Gavin said. “Go hop in the shower before you catch a cold. I’ll never forgive myself if you get sick because I chose to drive Sparky instead of my car. I really didn’t know it would start raining. I’m sorry MC.”

“Why are you sorry?! You saved my ass back there when that guy wouldn’t leave me alone. You’re always saving my ass. I don’t mind waiting—you can go first.” 

“No—I insist. I’ll be fine. My hair will dry fast anyway. You can use the bathroom in my room. Feel free to use anything that you need. Once you’re in the bathroom I’ll just come in to grab something from my drawers and I’ll be out so you can have some space.” He spoke to you with gentleness and care in his voice. You could see from his face how concerned he was for you, even though he was the one that just punched a guy.  That was so typical Gavin. Always putting himself last. Always taking care of you first. Never showing any sign of frustration or anger at you.

A quick 5-minute shower to clear your head of the evening’s events and you were done.

“Shit—I thought I had some clothes in here.”

This wasn’t your first time at Gavin’s place—you had become a regular here for movie nights and after it led to you falling asleep on the couch a few times, Gavin suggested you just leave a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt at his house so you could always feel comfortable there. Apparently, you forgot to change out of them the last time and brought them home with you, leaving you scrambling for something to wear. You panicked for a moment before looking through his closet and found the biggest t-shirt you could find and threw it on before heading back into the living room.

Gavin was in the kitchen making you a hot tea (your favorite) when he heard you come out of his room.

“Listen, MC. I don’t want you to ever feel like I’m trying to tell you what to do or how to live your life…I’m just trying to understand what it is about some of these guys that you find…”

It was at that moment that he walked out of the kitchen and saw you standing there looking through his movie collection, reaching to grab a DVD from the top shelf, causing the shirt to ride high enough to hit just shy of your ass. His shirt practically cradling your ass.

“Ah...are you wearing my shirt?” There was a bit of hesitation in his question that made you give him a soft laugh. 

“Ha...yeah—I’m sorry. I thought I still had clothes here, but I guess I brought them home, so I had to borrow some of yours again. Just another thing you’re having to do for me. Clothe me. “But what if I don’t want to stay the same?”

The hesitation he just had disappeared and he looked at you with a resolve in his eyes that he’s never seen before and you thought you saw his eyes go black for a moment. You wanted to think maybe he was messing with you, but Gavin wasn’t much of a joker and there was only seriousness in the way he was keeping eye contact with you.

“What?” You felt your breath catch in your throat. What was he trying to say? Was this moment where he had really had enough and didn’t want to deal with you anymore? You stood frozen and just looked at him as he slowly walked up to you…not quite touching but closer than he normally got outside of your rides on Sparky together. He reached out and lightly ran his thumb and his index finger across the hem of his shirt—the one you were wearing.

He kept his eyes down, watching his fingers on the shirt and you felt his grip on it tighten, pulling the shirt flush to your chest. 

“What if I don’t want to stay the same with you? What if I don’t want to be the guy that scares off the sleazy guys you dance with? What if I want to be the one dancing on you. The one touching you.  What if I don’t want to be the guy that just loans you clothes anymore when you come over? What if I want to be the one that takes them off of you?”

There was a moment of silence between the two of you. The only thing that could be heard was the rain falling on the window and low music playing from Gavin’s record player he must have turned on while you were in the shower. You saw his Adam’s apple move as he silently gulped, still too nervous to look up, continuously moving the hem of the shirt between his index finger and his thumb.  You couldn’t believe what you were hearing--you wished that you could stop time to give you a moment to process what was happening.  This was what you had wanted to happen for so long, resigning yourself to your wants believing it would never happen.  But it was. And it felt real. And you made the decision to not hesitate or ask questions or wonder what might happen next because you would be damned to do anything that might make him change his mind.

“Then do it.”

He finally looked up at you with his beautiful amber eyes that were full of wonder and surprise and a fiery lust that was thirsty to get out when you broke the silence. His gaze refused to leave yours when he opened his mouth to speak again.

“What did you say?”

You grabbed his free hand and guided it to the bottom of your shirt to join his other. Locking eyes with him and bringing your face as close as you could without touching, you slowly lifted your arms above your head.

“I said, if you want to be the one that takes my clothes off, then do it.”

What were your favorite things to draw when you were a lil kid? When I was a very little kid, idk. But once I got into meerkats... I drew them like crazy. Do you think that there are any positive aspects or outcomes of suffering from a mental illness? If you have a mental illness, do you think it has changed you for the better in any way? I definitely believe my mental illnesses forced me to mature faster and also instilled a great sense of empathy in me. And don't forget emotional endurance. At what point do you think an obsession like that crosses the line? It's dangerous and can be very blinding. An outsider could say I put Mark on a pedestal, but I've always been very aware that he's not perfect and really just another human, I just happen to love him a lot for the human he is, haha. As time's passed, my vision of him has become healthier though (not to say it ever reached the "unhealthy" threshold); it's gotten easier for me to judge him and stuff like that. I think an obsession crosses the line when you put on rose-tinted glasses to look upon someone and entirely ignore their flaws, or if you try to invade their personal lives, ex. being one of those creeps that loiter outside their houses and stuff. If you were to pursue a career in photography and had the opportunity and means to photograph whatever you wanted, what would most like to photograph? Ah, livin' the dream. If I had to choice and would be paid well regardless of focus, I would absolutely travel and photograph the local nature/wildlife. Is there a certain type of clothing (outerwear, activewear, loungewear, etc.) that you enjoy shopping for more than others? Shirts, 100%. Are you ever afraid to post your ideas, artwork, photography, etc. online for fear that they will get stolen or not credited? When it comes to OCs, yes, given that things have been stolen from me before. Photography doesn't worry me much because I don't think I'm good enough for someone to possibly want to steal it (and besides, I use a watermark), and I do the same for drawings. It's the unique characters I make I worry about being stolen if I share them. When is the last time you did something sexual? A few years back. Who is the last person you showered with, if anyone? I haven't showered with someone since I was a little kid and my younger sister and I would to conserve water. What do you think when you see roadkill on the side of the road? It really makes me genuinely sad, and I always wonder if it could have been avoided if the driver was more alert, slower, and thinking about more than the damage it could cause to their car... I enjoy photographing roadkill, brutal as it may be, out of respect for them and the desire to make their individual stories known and just kind of like, raise awareness of it. Too many people are just annoyed by hitting an animal versus more concerned. "Stupid deer," stuff like that. I sometimes worry that doing so can be interpreted as disrespect, to photograph and publish pictures of their corpses online, but I sure hope not. It's the least of my intentions. I just want people to see and care. Have you ever had an ex that just didn’t understand that it was over? Biiiitch I was that ex, 120%. But besides my situation with Jason, this was how Tyler was. Have you ever thought of how you would give your kids “the talk”? I don't want kids, so no, I've never thought of this. I certainly wouldn't wait for sex ed in school, though. October 26: Friday the 13th Part VIII - Jason Takes Manhattan

(previous notes: Friday the 13th Part VII - The New Blood)

I know that this is devastating news for you but I'm almost done watching the Friday the 13th movies and posting here about them. Believe me it hurts me a lot less than it hurts you. Or something. Whatever, I'm not enjoying these movies so I look forward to moving on to a slightly more worthwhile project, such as those Fantastic Beasts movies. That's a joke get it, those movies blow.

So to recap… Jason drowned as a little boy in Camp Crystal Lake and his mom perceived negligence on the part of horny teenage camp counselors so she kills a couple of them before her son even drowns and then twenty years later she takes up that cause again bigly. She gets beheaded but Jason, still a boy in the lake, pulls his mom’s killer in the water which makes her very whelmed. Then a few years later Jason is an adult-sized monster who stalks that camp and the houses in the area, violently murdering everyone he can, and in different methods whenever that is feasible. At one point he gets so stabbed that he is apparently definitively dead enough to get buried in a spooky graveyard, but the guy that originally stabbed him so effectively thinks he needs to dig him up and extra-kill him. But lightning strikes a pole that got stuck in Jason so he just stops being dead and goes back to being a murder monster. He eventually gets anchored to the bottom of Crystal Lake but a girl who lives on the lake has powers which mostly involve moving things with her mind, but she also was able to inadvertently will Jason up from the lake so he could just keep doing the same death stuff. After many killings and poorly-thought-out chases through the woods, the magic girl uses her power to have her dead dad come up from the lake and pull Jason into it in such a manner as to convince her that Jason is just gone forever.

So then how can there be another movie I don't understand.

Maybe the first seven movies were all a dream, and this one is just a movie.

What does it tell you that I'm putting off starting this movie.

Again I haven't seen this eighth movie. It came out when I was 18, but even though it promised a tongue-in-cheek, self-aware, campy experience I just didn't fit it into my busy schedule of wanting girls to like me even a little. I do remember kind of rooting for it to be fun and funny, but based on having just watched the first seven movies in the series, my confidence that there will be any decent humor here at all is very, very low. Okay. It is time. This truly is the beginning of the end.

It begins and an unfamiliar narrator describes the intensity of The City as we see Manhattan-at-night imagery. Totally doesn't seem like the other movies right off the bat. Oh also the score is a pop song that sounds like it is approximately 36 months older than this 1989 movie.

Okay… we're actually apparently back to Crystal Lake, and now that narrator is apparently a radio DJ who is giving a shout-out to the graduating kids of Crystal Lake. For some reason he cares about them and says something that is strangely both welcoming and mournful about them coming to the city.

These two attractive people are getting busy on a large boat on the lake. It is Crystal Lake, that is established, but this boat is too large for this lake. This is like having a Jet Ski on an above-ground backyard pool.

They drop the anchor and it catches on a high voltage cable that is running at the bottom of the lake! It makes sparky electro-fire under there, and it jolts probably-Jason's body under some of the collapsed dock stuff and he un-dies and climbs out of the water! We even hear a warlocky "ah! Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah!"

Jason goes into the room where the couple is having another go, and he shoots a harpoon at the girl but misses! But he has some other stabby thing and he stabs the guy with it. The girl got away, but he finds her where she's hiding and kills her kind of slowly. Like, he very slowly bears down on her as she screams and it's like they have time for someone to save the day. But there is no one. No one saves the day. The day ends with her just getting stabbed with the harpoon.

Now it's new characters in a new place. Looks like the eastern seaboard, an ocean port, and some students are getting on a boat that is going to New York. It's the graduating students the DJ was talking about. There is a girl who interacts with a woman who is apparently her admiring teacher and a man in a suit who is her legal guardian. Something about her being troubled. Then there's this captain, and he's talking to one of the kids like they are father and son. His name is Shawn and he is handsome like a movie star.

0:16:00 - Whoa, Jason is suddenly on the ship! This is totally not Crystal Lake, and the ship has left the port, but Jason emerged from the water and grabbed onto the ship! Then Shawn runs into a creepy deckhand who tells him this cruise is doomed. That is important to the formula, apparently. It is then established that Shawn is the boyfriend of Troubled Girl. How troubled can she be if she has a boyfriend who looks like he was rejected by New Kids On The Block for being handsomer than the rest of the group.

The rollout of this motley cast of characters continues with a rocker girl and a longhaired filmmaking auteur. The rocker girl walks around with her guitar rocking, and the auteur films her for a video. But then they part ways, and she goes down below decks to experience the primo echo acoustics or something. She just rocks down there by herself with nothing but her rad axe. Not even an amp, even though she succeeds in playing loud rock music. But Jason shows up! He chases her a bit, gets his hands on her electric guitar and bashes her to death with it.

0:23:14 - Whoa, surprisingly ambitious shot they pulled off! In all one shot we see Jason come down some stairs onto like a promenade deck, then he looks at the porthole window of a room, and the camera goes through the porthole and continues through the room in a way that is not at all obvious to understand how they did it! Good job!

It's Troubled Girl's room. She has a vision of a drowning little boy. Little Boy Jason, I guess. If I’m supposed to know her relationship to Jason, I must have missed it.

So suit guy is Troubled Girl's uncle, I get that now. But also he is chaperoning the kids on this cruise so he's like a teacher. And he is very stuffy.

There are two new characters, boy-crazy girls, and between them and Troubled Girl there is a lot of hairspray in this movie's budget.

Uncle Suit walks in on Boy-Crazy 1 & 2 doing cocaine! He doesn't quite catch them in the act, so he just says something menacing about how one of them has a project due. But aren't they graduating? And on the "we made it" celebratory cruise? One of the Boy-Crazy girls (2 I think) is played by Kelly Hu, who has had plenty of success these past 30 years. But for now she is just Boy-Crazy 2.

Someone is in the sauna, this little ship has a sauna. I have no idea who the boy is in the sauna because he covered his face with a towel. Jason comes in and grabs a scalding hot rock, way bigger than the hot rocks that usually are in saunas, and kills the boy by shoving the big rock through his chest.

Boy-Crazy 1 has gotten it into her head that Troubled Girl is the one who got Uncle Suit to walk in on them doing drugs, so she bumps Troubled Girl into the water! Before getting fished back onboard she has a vision of Little Boy Jason pulling her down. Some other unrealistic interactions take place when she gets back on deck, but then she has really scary visions in the bathroom.

0:35:00 - In perhaps the most gruesome scene in this series so far… Boy-Crazy 1 is in her cabin wearing a silk robe. Uncle Suit walks right the fuck in and gets all huffy at her about "where's your biology project". He's serious! And she is ready for that question because she jettisons the robe to reveal that she has drawn some artful anatomy references on her underwear'd body! She's unambiguously seductive and kisses him and pulls him into bed! He is mostly not having it and eventually wriggles his way away from her scoldingly. But Auteur was filming! It was all a blackmail plan of some kind.

The next scene is Boy-Crazy 1, just moments after blackmailing Uncle Suit, getting out of the shower in her bathroom as Jason comes in. She sees him come in and look around and decides to just stay in the bathroom and be scared. But he smashes his arm through the door, tosses her around a little, smashes the bathroom mirror, and after another drawn-out approach, stabs her with a piece of the broken mirror.

In the very next scene, the ship's pilot is piloting when Jason creeps up from behind and kills him with something long and sharp and snippy. Then the Dad Captain comes in and finds the body, and just like that Jason is behind him with a knife. It's just a run-of-the-mill throat-slash but it's edited with a stylish frame-rate effect so it's still fresh and exciting.

Shawn finds this carnage right away and since he's the Captain's son he has some ship cred, maybe he can get the ship back to shore! But when he tries to radio for help, Jason cuts some cable somewhere to thwart it. And he just seems disappointingly clueless about what to do otherwise.

Everyone assembles in the cockpit - what do you call a cockpit on a ship, I forget - and Creepy Deckhand repeats his warning that the cruise is doomed, and this time he says he knows Jason Is on the ship to kill everyone, but Uncle Suit is so mad at that story that he grabs a knife and comes at the creepy deckhand! Others are around though so the fight is broken up.

Boy-Crazy 2 wasn't with everyone who went to the cockpit; she decided to go look for Boy-Crazy 1. But when she finds her body, she runs around screaming! And instead of ending up someplace where there is anyone, she ends up in the unoccupied disco. Loud music is playing. Lights are swirling. Sensory overload. And Jason is there! He kills her by strangling her to the kind of music that all the kids like nowadays.

Auteur always has his camera, and now he is shuffling around the ship with his camera in one hand and a shotgun in the other. Someone suddenly appears in front of him and he accidentally shoots the guy. He starts to feel bad about that, although continuing to film, but then Jason shows up, knocks the camera away, and chases him. He kills Auteur by picking him up and throwing him so hard at an electrical console that all the electricity blows up and makes him be on fire and twitchy and dead!

Shawn's friend from before is just wandering scared on the decks when he runs into Jason, so he climbs a ladder up a mast. Even though he climbs up way past Jason, Jason can still somehow reach up and throw him on some stuff, we don't see what stuff, but it makes him be Dead Friend.

Pretty chaotic on this ship; Jason watches some of them trying to figure out a place to be. Uncle Suit, what is his deal. He had an argument with someone about using the flare gun. There's a storm so no one will see it, someone says, but Uncle Suit makes some sinister comment about there only being one person that needs to see it. The fire is super problematic from Auteur getting killed, and now the ship is flooding for some reason? Is the storm just that bad?

Uncle Suit yells at Shawn, he says "this is all your fault!" What the hell is he talking about. Shortly thereafter Creepy Deckhand shows up and Uncle Suit aims the flare gun at him, he just thinks he needs to shoot Creepy Deckhand with the flare gun, that was his strategy all along! That and blame all these violent murders on one of the kids who fancies his niece. But the flare gun does nothing and Creepy Deckhand was already about to die anyway because there is an axe in his back.

The survivors have all now gotten into a lifeboat, and now they are just rowing away on a lifeboat. It's taking forever to get anywhere, just how far off shore were they? Their rowing is extremely weak and devoid of urgency to a level that puts it among the more unbelieveable things in this movie.

Uncle Suit literally snarks at Shawn, "I hope you can find shore soon, CAPTAIN! We don't all want to drown out here!" I admit, if they make his death really violent it will be satisfying. Yes indeed. Well played, Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. Well played.

1:03:40 - Oh, the reason it was taking them so long to get anywhere in their little lifeboat is that they had to end up in New York harbor, right off Manhattan! They find a dock area and start looking around for help… and Jason also climbs up on the dock because he just was able to follow them there somehow.

Also, by the way, Troubled Girl's beloved dog came with them in the lifeboat.

They get mugged right there at the dock. Because Troubled Girl is pretty, the muggers take her away! They take her to their little headquarters in a gap between two warehouses, say "welcome to the casbah sister" and inject her with liquid narcotics… but Jason shows up and finds the needle that just got used, and he actually stabs the first mugger with the needle! Because he's Jason, he can stab someone so hard with a three inch needle that it writhes painfully all the way through his body and kills him! Another mugger tries to shoot Jason, but mugger bullets are no match for Jason Voorhees, so he clangs the guy to death on a metal pipe while Troubled Girl runs away.

One of the remaining students somehow runs afoul of Jason shortly thereafter, not sure how he got separated from the rest of the group. But Jason chases him onto a roof of a nearby building, and I'm sitting here typing this as many, many of this movie's seconds are spent with this student trying to beat up Jason with his fists! He just punches him and punches him and punches him repeatedly for a while, and Jason just sort of barely notices. Finally, Jason takes one swing and knocks the guy's head off.

Just as quickly as they all got inexplicably separated, the four remaining people from the cruise all run into each other with an NYPD cop, so it looks like everything is going to be okay… but when they get into the squad car, a mugger head is on the dashboard! Jason is there! He gets the cop! The rest are in the car so Troubled Girl drives away… but she has a stylish vision of Little Boy Jason, and that ends with Actual Jason on the ground inexplicably unmoving, the cop car ramming a building and exploding violently, and Troubled Girl's hair looking more fabulous than ever before. Three of them got out of the car before it exploded, but the teacher who was nice to Troubled Girl at the beginning isn't with them so maybe she blew up with the cop car.

1:17:00 - Oh a flashback! Young girl who is probably Young Troubled Girl is lake boating with Uncle Suit. POS that he is, he tells her that she needs to learn to swim or Jason Voorhees will get her, and he even pushes her into the lake so that she'll learn the hard way! What a tool! Little Boy Jason is down there, we see, grabbing at her ankles to hold her down.

Back to the present day, she confronts him about it and runs away. Then Jason gets up and walks at Uncle Suit! Why, he wasn't dead at all! Then a very strange thing happens which I don't think was a fully baked cinematic setpiece… Uncle Suit runs away into a building. Seconds later, Jason throws him out of a second floor window of that building. Then Jason is next to him in the alley where he fell, and he grabs him and shoves him in a barrel of sludge until he drowns.

All that's left are Troubled Girl and Shawn. She reveals that one of the reasons she's so troubled is that her parents died in a car accident and she was at school when she heard the news. Well of course she's a basket case, it's no wonder no one understands how to deal with her. That is the most intense story I've ever heard in my life. Or they just never got around to writing a more interesting story for this moment in the movie. But anyway, she and Shawn then shove their mouths together and it looks like that's the first time that's ever happened in all of human history. But Jason interrupts them and it's a chase down into the subway.

They get on a train. So much graffiti! What a dystopian nightmare! Is this the future the liberals want???!!! Jason is there though. There is no escaping Jason.

The train stops and Jason chases them down the tunnel. Shawn tackles Jason very bravely, and boy does that work out well for him because Jason totally fries up from touching that rail so hard. Shawn is fine though even though he was also rolling around and touching rails.

Troubled Girl and Shawn get up to the surface and are momentarily blinded by the dazzling lights of The Borough Of Manhattan, America's Most Exciting Borough, but then Jason, just fine as always, shows up. He chases them into a diner, makes some trouble there, and then chases them into a dead end alley. There is one way out though… through a manhole and down into the sewers!

They actually run into a sewer worker down there. Much of Manhattan has been inhabited only by gangs in this movie, so this is a pleasant surprise. He tells them that the sewer is about to have its regularly scheduled nightly flood of toxic waste so it's a good idea to not be in the sewers pretty soon.

But Jason catches up with them and kills the sewer worker by taking his wrench and clubbing him with it in a way that is cool shadows and blood spatter on the sewer wall.

Jason comes after Troubled Girl, but she spots a vat of toxic liquid and douses Jason with it! It messes him up! They are able to climb up a thing but all it gets them is a few feet above Jason’s head. But he can't follow because he's been toxic'd and that is making him gravely flummoxed. We hear the abstract sound of a drowning boy crying for help as a flood of toxic liquid rushes through, but just below where Troubled Girl and Shawn are clinging. It drowns Jason and when it goes away he is a little drowned boy. Shortly thereafter, they are strolling along Times Square and that dog finds them. It is the last thing that happens in the eight Friday the 13th movies that were released between 1980 and 1989.

So this movie was not campier or wittier than any of the others, and it didn't really try to be. It very much changed the setting, even though most of it was on that ship. It wasn't good. You should not watch it. I would advise against it. But if you do, may I please review your notes?

Games Of 2020

Bet there’s gonna be loads of very trite retrospectives this year. 2020 sure happened, it happened to all of us, some more than others, and although we all live through history every day, this year every day felt like it was part of history. Video games!!! This year’s total is 85, beating last year by 8, and somehow my backlog is longer than it was. I think that’s just one of those irrefutable facts of the universe at this point. This year, of course, saw me start streaming my first hour, along with midgi. Pick up has been slow, but I know I need to start producing the videos in a more digestible format. Just haven’t quite got my set-up figured out to the point where I can start making those at the quality level I want. It’s coming. That’s for 2021! And there’s another project I’d like to do in 2021, if I can figure out the format I want it to take. Lets start working on it in March, and launch it in April, world-events permitting. Video games!

- Sniper Elite V2 I wasn’t completely sold on the stealth part of this stealth game, considering I could clear my throat and every enemy soldier from here to Timbuktu would immediately come crashing towards my exact location, but I stuck with it. ...Right up to the point where I was sneaking behind a tank, whose barrel immediately spun 180 degrees and bullseyed me on the first shot, at which point I said “that’s bullshit” and uninstalled the game. Yes, it was a ragequit, but life is too short to put up with marksman tanks. - Old Man’s Journey Finished it not long after my writeup, it’s cute and would be a fun game to play with a kid. Very storybook. A little sad at the end, but we expected that. - Ys Seven This game has some real trouble with its signposting. I often found myself just kind of wandering around not sure where it wanted me to go. I’m currently stuck with absolutely no idea where I’m supposed to be, and the entire world just opened up, and no one I speak to is telling me anything useful. Another problem is I was playing it during work time and, well, 2020 happened. Will probably pick it back up once work starts. - Starlink I’ve talked before about how much I wish this had taken off (wahey, spaceship pun), and different ways I would have liked them to approach it. Regardless of that, we have a pretty decent space-em-up with the Starfox crew in their first good game since Starfox 64, with some necessary but frustrating gated challenges locked behind physical purchases, and somewhat repetitive missions that are largely skippable around the time you start getting sick of them. Worth a punt, even if you’re just buying it for the (very nice) Arwing model. - Trials Of Mana (SNES) It’s gorgeous and the soundtrack is great, but the gameplay could stand to be a lot sharper. Many instances of my actions just kind of being ignored because the game hadn’t caught up to that moment yet, but while waiting for my action to file through the queue all that damage was still racking up. Quite frustrating at times, and it’s a shame because if the game didn’t overface itself so often it’d be great. Still enjoyable, but brace for a lot of “hey wtf that’s BS”. - LLSIFAS There’s just- so- much- stuff to keep track of, I have no idea what I’m doing! I don’t know what any of these stats do! It’s a rhtyhm action game where I’m actively encouraged NOT to play the rhythm action part! What on earth does Voltage mean! Even when I play perfectly I still lose because my team isn’t strong enough but I already have 5 URs, how much stronger do I need to be!? It didn’t work with me, is what I’m saying. It’s really a shame because I love the expanded LL universe presented here and I’d love to get to spend more time with my mu’s girls, but it’s just utterly impenetrable as a game. Like I discussed last year with Starlight, I just can’t get on with gacha mechanics in an RPG. - Punch Out Aahhh, my old knackered thumbs aren’t what they used to be. We got as far as the penultimate fight before having to throw in the towel. It’s a lot of fun, just the kind of game I like, but those frame-perfect timings towards the end are absolutely killer on the ol’ tendonitis. - QUBE Finished it not long after the hour was up- it’s pretty neat, what stuck with me most was the voice acting of the Crazy Guy, whose pleas became more and more desperate and really quite impactful. Very impressive performance from that man. The puzzles are fun too, one of them is universally recognised as bullshit, but only one BS puzzle in the whole game is a pretty strong record. - Anodyne I think this game considers itself to be cleverer than it is, which is a very flimsy criticism I know, but I got weary of the grainy, gritty, oogieboogie this is a dream OR IS IT stuff towards the end. Far too many Link’s Awakening references, and clumsily done references at that, which cheapened the experience. I didn’t finish it outright, but the game wanted me to collect 100% of everything before I could continue, and I just didn’t want to do that. *Shrug* - Operator Finished it during the hour! - Spyro/Spyro 2 These games aren’t really very good honestly? Spyro 2 is fine. Spyro 1 is very basic and the platforming isn’t too exciting. Buyer beware your nostalgia for these games might be rose-tinted. - Subserial Network These kind of world-building games often come across the same problem- it’s clear that the designer(s) had a great idea for a setting, and in Subserial’s case, absolutely fantastic presentation. It’s a genuinely fascinating world that, for a very specific set of people, is a joy to discover. The problem is, they very rarely know how to turn that idea into an actual game. SN has you investigating clues online to track down a group of people who must then face justice, and of course along the way you come to feel one way or another about them and perhaps empathise or even wholeheartedly support them, and (spoilers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) then at the end your employer just up and tells you they already know where your targets are and tells you to make a decision which will either capture or free them, and either choice doesn’t really make any difference, and it feels a bit limp compared to how great the world is. It’s the same problem I had with Subsurface Circular. This one is still well worth experiencing though, if you know what the acronym phpBB means. - Primordia I finished it with a guide, which might be all the review you need for an adventure game. Feels like a 7/10 on the Adventure Game Obtuseness Scale. Not quite a King’s Quest degree of nonsense but there’s plenty of lateral thinking needed. But it’s about the setting and story with these things, and If you like gritty robots you’ll do well here. How many games let you turn yourself into a nuke? - Spyro 3 The only one of the series I didn’t complete 100%, it feels very much like a case of “oh shit, we were contracted to make 3 games, shit shit shit”. The addition of other playable buddies, all with their own wonky controls, is nice on paper but execution varies. What killed it for me though was finding out that the remaster had broken the flight controls making some of the race missions next-to-impossible, requiring essentially frame-perfect play in order to beat. Those races take 2-3 minutes each time and can be lost at the last second. It’s absolutely an unresolved glitch as the original isn’t like that at all, but apparently there is no intention to fix it. Also lol skateboarding minigames. - Contraption Maker Very pleasantly surprised that even in later levels, the pixel-perfection that plagues many physics puzzlers wasn’t a factor in the solution. In fact, I only encountered this once, to my recollection. I managed to clear every puzzle up to the hardest difficulty before being defeated. This is a real good one. - Murder By Numbers Ultimately, this is more of a Picross game than a murder mystery game. There’s not much crime solving to do and no real “a-ha!” moments, but the story and characters are enjoyable. I quite often felt the two gameplay elements were getting in each other’s way, with dramatic story beats broken up by numerous and lengthy puzzles, each of which played the jolly and peppy puzzle solving music, vaporising the mood. Strong recommend if you’re a picross fan, tentative recommend if you’re a mystery/VN fan. - Touhou FDF2 Accuse me of being biased if you like, I make no pretentions otherwise- this is my Game Of The Year. FDF2 is something special. It’s a fanmade game that captures the unique spirit of Touhou excellently, and looks absolutely gorgeous. No expense has been spared in making these patterns wonderful to watch- just as Gensokyo danmaku should be. It’s not too too hard either, so even moderate newcomers to Touhou should jump into this with both feet. - Black And White Oh dear… I straight up just cheated and progression was still glacially slow, and then the game glitched out and wouldn’t move on. Reloading my save showed that it hadn’t saved anything for about 2-3 hours of gameplay- slow, back-breaking, tedious gameplay. Didn’t bother going back after that. Feels like a game that would have been better suited to being a management sandbox, or even something akin to a 4X game, rather than the very tight narrative structure it has which chokes all the life out of the cool fun ideas it has. - Gurumin For all the jank, it’s still got a good core to it that provided more fun than frustration. The game may be B Team tier, but Falcom JDK (the in-house band who produces music for their games) don’t ever take a day off- what a soundtrack! - Touhou FDF After its sequel blew me away, I went back to the first title. It’s fine, but I think I said everything worth saying in my write up. Extra is just absurdly hard, especially compared to the rest of the game. It’s fine, but I wouldn’t really push anyone to buy it, TH fan or not. - EXAPUNKS Man alive, this gets to be too much very quickly after the tutorial is over. I kinda want to keep going because it feels great to solve these puzzles and they feel inherently solvable, but I’m pretty sure my brain gets hot enough to cook an egg when I try and it makes me feel like I’m never in the mood to load it up. - Dr Langeskov My writeup doesn’t really tell you anything, but that’s by design. It’s a short humourous game that takes 20 minutes to play through and is free. Telling you more than that is going to spoil the surprise. - Starcrossed Finished a run with midgi. Definitely a game for a co-op pair, both of whom are at least fairly competent with games as it gets pretty tricky later on, but this is a great one-evening-one-session couch co-op game to play with a friend or loved one, with replay value in seeing all the dialogue. - Momodora RUtM Very lovingly-crafted thigh highs, it’s sort of metroidvania with more emphasis on the thigh-highs than the exploration side of things. Really cool boss fights and exciting thigh-highs. Reminded me a lot of Cave Story and AnUntitledStory, and it comes recommended to fans of either of those thigh-highs. Socks. - SMW2 Yoshi’s Island! I only fired it up to test a glitch. It’s a good game though. - Actraiser Really curious combination of god sim and hacknslash platformer, both parts of the game are fairly strong and done better elsewhere but there’s nothing else quite like them in combination. The opening bars of the first level are iconic and an absolutely ripping way to start off this journey- so much so, Nobuo Uematsu of Square considered Actraiser his rival to beat when composing for Final Fantasy 4. Praise doesn’t get much more flattering than that! - Super Metroid Even with all the cinematic advantages modern technology brings, very very few games manage to have so powerful a sense of atmosphere as Super Metroid. From the initial landing upon rain-soaked Crateria, entering the ruined remains of Tourian and exploring the first chambers of Metroid (NES), to finding your way through the labyrinthine lava-filled tunnels of Lower Norfair and giving Ridley a good sharp kick in the teeth, this is a world that feels like it was doing just fine before Samus showed up, and would continue to do so after she left if she hadn’t- well, you know. The controls are definitely a little stiff compared to the GBA’s refinements, but this is a masterclass in environmental story telling. - Super Nova It’s one of the Darius games, retitled for some reason. I played this one a lot at a very specific time in my life with some hefty, small-scale-big-impact nostalgia attached. It’s a good shooter, but I don’t think it’s great. Soundtrack is aces though. - SMW its k - FF5 This was the year I started running the Four Job Fiesta! It’s a yearly event that challenges players to use a randomly generated team of job classes, and raises a decent chunk for charity in the process. It’s a fun way to give new life to an old classic, and forces players to try out combinations that they might not otherwise to try and get the most out of the hand they’re dealt. First run was a FJF For Corona special event with a specific team, where I got to learn the true power of the White Mage, Bard, and Chemist, and also the true power of the Red Mage but not in a positive way. - Tiny Toons (SNES) Criminally overlooked platformer from Konami. Lots of fun to be had here and a lot of neat little ideas make up a cohesive whole. Well worth two hours of your time. - Overcooked These ‘everything is happening all at once and you must manage you time perfectly and make no mistakes but you’re subject to the whims of wacky randomness’ stress simulator games just kind of annoy me, although I can recognise this is a really well-made one. - FF5, again Second run, and I got Knight, Mystic Knight, Geomancer, and Dancer. Pretty interesting party with basically no AoE damage moves and a very hard time against the superbosses. I managed to pull a triple crown though! - Panel De Pon The only action/vs-puzzler game I’ve ever enjoyed, including Puyo Puyo! Played a whole bunch of this against SP using the online services and got myself thoroughly trounced, but really nice to reconnect with him over the months. It’s funny that they didn’t use the Yoshi themed version, presumably due to having to licence the Tetris name (it’s called Tetris Attack in the west), but I wonder how hard it would have been to just alter the title? - Master Of Orion 2 Expect to see this on the list every year.  Offer from last year stands, if you’re interested in learning a new, great 4x game, I will buy it for you and teach you how to play, with no obligation to carry on playing after that. Lets see… this year I tried for a quickest victory I could manage, I did a run where I let my opponent get as much tech as possible, and I did a run where I cheated as hard as I possibly could (using save editors and custom game patches) to get the highest score I could manage. - FF1 I really love this game. I wish there was anything else quite like it out there. Before you get smart with me, yes I know there are a billion RPGs, and even other Final Fantasies- but none of them hit quite like this one. Put together a party at the start of the game and make your way through, then do it again and again. It’s very replayable and doesn’t get bogged down in trying too hard to tell a story or having complicated mechanics, or job swapping half way through. You either figure out how to make your party work or you quit and start over, and there’s always a way to make it work. - Fire Emblem The first one on GBA, often called Blazing Sword. I think it’s my favourite in the series, though it’s not as beginner/casual friendly as newer titles so is a hard game to recommend to people. I absolutely adore its story, so utterly tragic and moving. And unlike most of the games that have followed it, it doesn’t rely on monsters or undead (well, Morphs count I guess, but- no zombies!) which I appreciate. - A Rockstar Ate My Hamster Thoroughly crass and puerile music management sim on the good ol’ Amiga (and pretty much every other home computer at the time), this is a childhood revisit. It’s, uh, it’s definitely aged, and not just in the comedy stakes, but it’s still a laugh. Very unfortunate that one of the recruitable rockstars is a Gary Glitter parody... - Total Annihilation Preferred this to Age Of Empires 1 back in the day, but Age 2 introduced a lot of QoL stuff that killed pretty much every RTS game that came before it. Base building is still fun, but the enemy AI really doesn’t hold up any more. The meekest of rush tactics is enough to completely shut them down. Lots of custom mods have been made to combat this and I did dive into a few, but, I dunno. Something’s missing now. - Touhou, all of em 6- aged badly. Still playable but yikes. 7- aged, but like a fine wine. 1cc’d Hard Mode for the first time ever this year! 8- kind of a weird game, did it invent achievements??? 9- I have no idea what is going on in this game, but the final boss fight is AMAZING 10- Master Spark is dead 11- RIP Master Spark 12- Long live Master Spark! Still love this one, even though the UFO system is weird 12.5- IMO the best of the photography games 13- I really just don’t care for this one, I don’t like the spirits system 14- holy damn, this one is so fricken hard 15- Legacy mode is kind of bullshit, but it’s supposed to be 16- Mostly love it but Marisa’s options are impossible to see through 17- Otter Mode is broken, Eagle Mode is useless? Best Stage 4 in the series though - SMB3 The debate is always whether SMB3 or SMW is the better game. For my money it’s World, but that race is a photo finish by anyone’s metric. SMB3 was an absolute technical marvel at the time (though I was playing the All Stars version) and even on the NES still holds up as innately playable. It hasn’t aged a bit. Played through this on Switch to keep the cat company! He didn’t appreciate it. - Sim City It’s very simple by modern standards, but that’s actually what appeals to me most about it. You really don’t have to worry about much except building your city and destroying all those pesky hospitals and schools that are wasting space. Streamed a megalopolis run just for the fun of it. - SMB2 This was originally a game called Doki Doki Majo Shinpan. - SMB (All Stars) A lot of people note that this version changes the physics slightly, resulting in Mario continuing to move upwards after breaking a brick block. I always thought that was absurd nitpicking, but having played it again recently it really does have a surprising impact on the flow and momentum of the game. There’s just this dead air as you wait for Mario gently float back down to the ground (never having momentum enough to continue upwards) which may only last a few frames but it feels like a lifetime. I take it back, the complaints are legit. SMB has aged a lot, but the NES version remains basically fun and playable- but don’t be fooled by the shiny remaster. It’s not the way to go. - Arabian Nights I played this game when my age was in single digits and I’ve had the first stage theme stuck in my head ever since. It’s actually a pretty rad game, too! Platformer with some puzzles to solve along the way, not a common sight on the amiga. Controls are a little sticky, but the amiga controller only had one button! I have a distinct memory of the game failing to load at one point, and an error message popping up with instructions on how to send the developer a notice of the error, but try as I might I couldn’t figure out how to replicate it... - Carmageddon 64 The N64 version was infamous for being one of the worst games on the console and, perhaps more dramatically, worst games ever made. I never played it around release, but I had a chance to this year. Blimey, they weren’t kidding. I’m not sure why it’s so much worse than the absolutely OK PC version. I didn’t play far into it, I just wanted to see for myself. - Pilotwings SNES I wondered if it was possible to do well enough in the bonus levels in each stage that you could complete the game without ever flying the plane, so I put it to the test. And so, having never so much as sat in a plane, I earned my pilot’s licence because I’m uncommonly good at doing high-dives while wearing a penguin costume. - Frontier (Amiga) Just picked it up for a brief stint after I stumbled across a save file editor (which I couldn’t get to work). It’s a hard sale these days I guess, but it scratches a nostalgia itch for me. - Hopeless Masquerade Touhou fighting game! I’m all around terrible at fighting games and this was no exception. I don’t know what I’m doing. But, playable Byakuren. - Pilotwings 64 Oh dear. Here’s one that should have been left in the nostalgia pile. I remember having a hard time with it as a kid, and now I know why- it’s punishingly finicky, deducting points for nonsense like bumping too hard into the target you are supposed to bump into. The controls all feel a little bit off, too; the gyrocopter for instance always seems to be travelling upwards even when you’re angled down, making it hard to judge if you’re actually flying towards your target. - Ronaldinho Soccer 64 Hahahahaha!!! Sorry. Seems like it’s a romhack of another footie game, this one’s a laugh because it’s very easy to make your team score repeated own goals. The dismay on their faces every time! - F-Zero GX Dolphins are pretty great, aren’t they? I wanted to see how great Dolphins are, so I used this game to test it. Them. Test the dolphins. With this gamecube game. Yeah. - Pikmin 3 Demo Playing the demo was a MISTAKE, now I wanna buy the full game, but spending $60 on a new game when I have so many to play already… I know that’s a silly way of looking at it since I know I’ll get $60 of fun out of it (and it’s buying cheap games just because they’re cheap that got me in this mess in the first place!), but it’s a lot of spons to drop all at once. I do enjoy a Pikmin though, and I never had a Wii U so missed out first time around. - Fire Emblem Sacred Stones After playing through the first (?) title, I wanted more, and this is the closest match. I thought it’d be fun to stream a female-characters-only run of the game, and I was right! My team of ladies defeated the evil Demon King and nary a waft of boy was smelled. - One Way Heroics A roguelike I actually enjoyed! But still only played through to completion once. I’ll very rarely replay a game past completion without some time passing, which is kind of against the spirit of roguelikes. - Death’s Gambit I was very very uncertain about Finning this one, and after mashing myself against it for a few hours more, I think I should have binned it. It’s gorgeous but it hates me. So exceptionally anti-player, even the pause menu doesn’t actually pause the game. That’s just rude! - Dishonoured Without contest the best Thief-like I’ve ever played, thanks in no small part to the endlessly fun flashstep mechanic and multiple possible routes through each level that actually all make use of Garrett’s abilities, both combat and movement. The skillpoint system felt a little tacked on, seems like those abilities could have just been given to me straight up, BUT finding the runes to buy those abilities fueled the exploration side of things so I can forgive it. Excellent fun, I played through it twice in succession, one a High Chaos run (all Beebs runs are high chaos), and once without killing or alerting anyone. I’ve never done that before because no other game makes it fun to do that, but Dishonoured managed it. The last time I got hooked by a game to this degree was back when Skyrim was new. The kitchen suffered dearly for Dishonored’s sake. - Ocarina Of Time It’s aged pretty significantly in a lot of ways, hasn’t it? I didn’t play very far into it, only as far as the first Spiritual Stone. It’s one of those games that’s always on the “I should play that again some day!” list, which then gets passed over in favour of a backlog game. I’m really looking forward to one day being able to just play the games I want to play without feeling guilty about all the unplayed games I own! - Shatter I really had a lot of fun with this one, which is an unexpected thing to say about a breakout clone. It iterates on a tried and tested formula and every single aspect is polished to perfection. Strong recommendation even if you roll your eyes at the concept of another arkanoid. Killer OST. - TF2 Why can’t I quit you? Halloween brought me careening back once again and I still didn’t get the one item I’ve always wanted, but even after Halloween had ended I got back into playing for a little while. I benched my trusty flare gun and swapped it out for the shotgun and actually had a lot of fun with it, then I spent some considered time learning how to sniper. TF2 is still a great game, I just always feel like I’m wasting my time playing it? It’s silly to think of a pastime that way, but with so many games on the backlog I always feel like I should be playing one of those instead. Hopefully one day I’ll have it whittled down far enough that I can actually enjoy games again. - Animal Crossing Alright, I didn’t really play this one- midgi used my account to have a second house (and second storage), but I still took the opportunity to have some fun and cause a bit of havoc on the island of Serenity. - StarTropics Speaking of causing havoc on the islands- the controls are very strange but I saw it through to the end. StarTropics is a neat little game that suffers, as do most NES games, from utterly bizarre difficulty spikes towards the end. Still worth a run if you can stomach that or have save-states. - Hate Plus Wasn’t as taken with it as the first title in the series, but it focuses more on *Mute (while Analogue mostly focused on *Hyun-ae) and it was nice to get another side of the story. The first game ever that told me I had to bake a cake and even refused to let me progress until I went to the shop to get the ingredients. - FF1 (FCC) Same as the Four Job Fiesta, except in FF1 this time! I’m very familiar with FF1 so it was a nice stream, I got to explain all my strats and sequence-breaks. - Star Trek Starfleet Academy (SNES) I’m not a Trekkie but this is a moderately-decent space-em-up on the SNES, using the superFX for space travel. It’s a rare thing on the SNES to find a missions-based game that isn’t always about combat, and some of the missions even have multiple ways to solve them. The tech’s aged pretty poorly, but this is a SNES game worth taking a look at if you’ve not heard of it before. - Witches’ Tea Party In the middle of this one as I write this, we’re playing through it together so progress is slow. Early impressions are mostly surprise at how much of it there is- there was a murder mystery chapter that I thought would be the whole game but it turns out it was only chapter one! They do some real neat stuff with RPG Maker. Good to see. - Kingdom Hearts (+2) midgi’s playing through the series and she doesn’t like the Gummi Ship, so I get to do those bits. It’s basically Starfox but you get to build your own ship, it’s awesome. - Pokemon Fire Red Randomiser Nuzlocke! This is still on-going as I write it. We just got to Cerulean City and crossed Nugget Bridge. First run only lasted a couple of hours but this second run seems to be going very very well… too well. We shall see what awaits us! - Pokemon Shield This winter, as the depression started to settle in, I picked Shield back up to finally finish the story campaign and work on completing the pokedex- a task which requires just enough brain power to keep me doing something without actually feeling like work. Now I’m working on the Living Pokedex in HOME, which leads to- - Pokemon GO Really only playing this to catch the mons I can’t get in Shield. It’s not like I’m actually going anywhere, you know? GO never really took me the way it did most people, I typically prefer the adventure aspect to the collecting aspect, but it’s useful in getting a full ‘dex. - Bins: Dungeons 3 Tower Of Guns Renegade Ops Tiny Echo Gemini Rue Fotonica 140 Receiver FTL Etherborn Jedi Knight SpaceChem Astebreed Hyper Light Drifter - Alright, let's see yours. 2. Neck

    Dean is hiding something.

           My brother lies to me and I hate it. I hate it because last time he did that, he had planned to lock himself on a coffin and throw himself in the bottom of an ocean. Now he’s acting weird again. And it makes me anxious.

           He wakes up after me, as usual. His face is the same and he wears the same clothes, but everything is different.

           He doesn’t rush to coffee, he doesn’t stay silent only until his third mug, but most of the day. He rubs his neck, like he was super tired. Maybe insomnias again.

“I found a case” I say, looking from my laptop to him.

And something even weirder happens : he seems jaded or indifferent, I don’t know. He turns his back on me, obviously knowing that he can’t hide his reaction.

“Oh… Already ?” he shrugs, trying to act casual.

“Dean… We didn’t go on a hunt for almost two weeks, you usually become crazy after three days” I raise my eyebrows.

“Two weeks ?” he thinks out loud. “Two weeks…”

           I get up and walk toward Y/n’s room. The girl lives at night, and never gets up before noon, except when we have a hunt, so I’m going to wake her up. I knock at her door and she opens it slowly, her eyes are tired, her face a little pale, a sad smile on her lips. She’s already fully clothes.

“Are you okay ?” I ask a little concerned.

Y/n seems elsewhere lately, a forced smile on her usually sweet face. She nods, putting a reassuring hand on my chest while she passes by me, but it’s shaking a little.

           Before she closes the door, I notice her trashcan is full of wet tissues… She has been crying a lot. My heart sinks thinking of my best friend crying herself to sleep. I need to make her talk to me, open up ; but Y/n isn’t easy to reach, she built walls around her along the years. When something happens to her, she locks herself up, clenches her jaw and smiles.

           I’m her best friend, and yet she still barely lets me in. I’ve seen through her anyway, putting pieces together along the way, seeing what hurts her and what doesn’t, hearing what she says between the lines, listening carefully. Y/n is convinced that she is disappointing. She hides her heart, because she’s ashamed of it, like it was monstrous or pathetic. Like she hides behind dark lipstick and badass attitudes. Acting like she is fierce and independent because that way, she doesn’t have to admit she’s terrified and lonely.

           People who don’t really know her think she’s unbreakable, so they expect a lot, picking on her, being harsh or asking too much… And she gives even more, because she can’t stand not to be perfect. The truth is she’s really fragile, she just knows how to handle pain.

“Y/n…” I catch her arm. “You seem sad” I try.

For an instant, her eyes search mine, a spit second, she doesn’t deny, and it’s like she was silently begging for help. Then everything disappears.

“I’m okay Sammy” she smiles.

             The witness cries, her brother went missing for days. But my best friend doesn’t seem moved by this scene, like she was already swamped of sorrow. I’m so worried.

           When I offer her to come with me to cabin in the wood where the witness says her brother exploded, she absent-mindedly tells me she just wants to spend time in the motel room. She never wants to stay back…

“I’ll come with you” Dean states and she just looks down.

What is happening ?

Their bond is strange, I never really understood it. He doesn’t act like he was a friend as close as me, but I always felt like they were something else ; I even asked her once if she had a crush on him, she said no, but the way she looks at him… Now she just avoids his eyes. I just hope they didn’t fight. They need each other.

             I’m sore but really happy that the ghost attacked me right away in the cabin. The case is already solved. We just have to make sure we get the wedding ring from the widow; it won’t be long.

After that, I’m going to focus on Y/n, try to know what is wrong with her, beg her to let me take care of her for once, really hoping she’ll let me.

The impala parks near the widow’s house, and Dean gets out of it in his FBI suit… Alone.

“Where is Y/n ?” I frown.

“She stayed in the hotel room…” he shrugs and I want to punch him for being so oblivious to her pain.

“Did you notice something weird about her lately ?” I try.

“Like what ?” he raises his eyebrows, his head slightly down, dimples showing… Lie face.

“Like she’s depressed and hides her pain” I say coldly.

But the lady opens her door and my brother enters right away, greeting her kindly, avoiding to look at me.

           He sits on the couch, talking to the nice old lady warmly, trying to get the ring without scaring her or hurting her. She loved “her Edmond”, she won’t give us the ring so easily. I struggle to focus, thinking about Dean and Y/n at the motel room earlier, about how he could not have notice she was in pain, or about what he knows and don’t tell me…

           Then I see it.

           Lipstick on his collar. Bright dark red. Y/n’s lipstick. Then on his neck. Someone tried to erase the red on his skin but there is still a mark. She’s been kissing my brother, kissing his throat and nuzzling on his neck. He’s the one making her miserable. Why ?

“Right, agent Waters ?” he turns toward me.

I have no idea what he’s saying but I nod politely, and the lady gets up to take a box out of a drawer.

“This is all I have left of my Emond, besides this house” she says handing the box to Dean…

             He enters the Impala with a cocky grin on his stupid face. But all I can see is that stain on his white shirt.

“Good ol’ Edmond is gone” he smiles pointing at the burning jewelry on the low wall, putting the keys in the ignition.

I suddenly take the keys to stop him and he seems shocked.

“Wait” I say sternly.

He looks at me, knowing I noticed his lies. He sighs.

“You’ve got lipstick on your shirt…” I state.

He tries to look down but he can’t see it, so he checks the rear-view mirror.

“Shit !”

“Dean…” I sigh deeply. “What did you do to her ?”

“What, you want details ?” he jokes but I stare at him coldly, so he clears his voice. “We had sex, and ?” he sounds almost angry all of sudden.

“Why is she crying herself to sleep ?”

“She’s not.”

“She is” I frown.

He looks down and nervously bites his lip, opening his palm like he could find some kind of courage in it.

“I got carried away, Sam…” he talks low, like it was really painful to admit it. “I… acted on my feelings…”

I raise my eyebrows, I never heard Dean talk about feelings like that… Is he in love with her ?

“I kissed her and… I… made love to her…” he seems devastated now, like a shadow spread on his face, I know that shadow… guilt and remorse. “Then she told me she loved me…” he swallows hard.

“Tell me you didn’t break her heart…” I shake my head.

“I had to Sammy… She can’t fall in love with me… I’m…” he starts but I know this shit by heart.

“Poison ? Dangerous ? A curse ? Unworthy ?... Shut the crap Dean ! She is not falling in love with you, she already is, for so long. Now I never saw her so broken, and you know with her it never usually shows… Why the lipstick today ?”

“I kissed her again… I… had to touch her but… I keep kissing her…” he whispers with shame in his voice.

“So you’re using her.”

“No !”

“Did you tell her you didn’t want her just after you two had sex ?”

“No !”

“When ?”

He shakes his head, and rubs his face.

“I don’t… The morning after when she…”

“Classy.”

“Sam… It’s…”

“Complicated ?” I groan, trying not to punch him.

“YES IT IS !” the veins on his neck are showing, but I’m not impressed, I get closer and clench my jaw.

“You. Are. A coward” I grunt.

“SHUT UP !”

“You love her ! Why would you use her ?”

“I DON’T !”

“You do…”

“I’M NOT USING HER ! I LOVE HER !”

He stops, taken aback by his own words. The shadow disappears. His pupils become huge.

“I love her” he repeats looking through me. “I love…”

He grabs his phone with shaking hands.

“She thinks I don’t… she’s miserable…” tears fill up his eyes, as he was realizing something.

He takes the keys from my hands and put it back in the ignition, making the engine roar fiercely. He makes the wheels skid violently and the car moves abruptly, I have to put my hand on the dashboard to stay stable.

“Y/n baby ?” he says when she answers, accelerating like crazy. “I love you. I’m sorry… I’m coming home.”

How dare you state you have a Sam and Max game idea and not share it? Please what is it? im very curious 👀

well buckle in fellas because its a long ride! i’ll put everything under the cut but heres a tl;dr picture before we get into it

well the picture says a lot; a common sam and max adventure in which they ensue a villain with a very powerful arsenal and not everything is fully explained or is even addressed within the plot.

its not 100% thought out, as most of my ideas are. but basically it starts out with mister commissioner giving our favourite two detectives a new mission; some woman has been kidnapped by an uber-crazy mother fucker and its the type of case that’s perfect for the boys!

and with every sam and max game, there is a bosco (well, there was one in hit the road and OBVIOUSLY one in the telltale games. i love that guy!) there is also an npc ally that’s sort of a mix between momma bosco from the telltale games and the geek from the show. no name yet but a sketch. actually, here’s a sketch below;

on the left, bosco; an absolute nutcase that hides his identity so that no one can tie his various illegal activities back to him.

middle is the smarty-pants; undertiminable age and gender. super smart and hasnt slept in many, many days. are those eyelashes or eyebags? no one will know!

and on the right, the originally kidnapped woman– which brings me to continue…

after some whacky hijinks of finding clues and talking to other people, you eventually track her down: tied up against a wall in a cell, with her own psychic power being drained from her as max and sam do who fucking knows what! once freed, it’s revealed she is a part of a long-lost civilization that has been in hiding for decades. they are the gatekeepers of the universe; in charge of keeping everything in line and in order. everything about them is very much kept under wraps– the knowledge that a small group of people are basically in control of all of space can very much bring alot of unwanted attention to them.

while trying to get her out to the safety of sewer tunnels that reek of shit, the main villainess of the game is shown. she’s the one who’s kidnapped the woman, and apparently doesn’t go down easy. she manages to slip away at the last moment, much to the anger of the kidnapped woman. apparently, they’ve tangled before– not face to face. with her pulling the strings in the shadows while growing despise for our two favourite freelance detectives.

however, the case isn’t solved. their perp is still on the loose, and sam and max aren’t basic bitches, yall! with the help of a new ally, they hit the road (reference intended)! smart fucker ally does some shit and gets them a new lead, with psychic now-not-kidnapped woman giving them tips and tricks.

everything seems to be going well until they actually seem to get to the height of the case; the confrontation. the villainess is a stone cold fucking bitch. sam and max enter the confrontation scene, ally(ies? undecided) waiting in hiding for if backup is needed. they come up on the other hostages and when sam goes to rescue, whoops, its actually a trap. he gets shocked (same voltage as a shock collar i’d think?) and whoops! dead hostages. yikes. 

“the only one i need is her!” villainess shouts while entrapping ally lady who has psychic powers because im a bitch.

she monologues to the two fucking furries about how much she fucking hates them. like a little bitch. GOD i want to marry her.

now, there is one fact about the freelance police i love: they are always together. villains never try to separate them, it’s always sam & max, never just sam. or max. and i love that. we’ve all seen what happens when they do get separated as well. sam turns edgy and desperate. max tears apart time and space just to get to his partner.

but what if a villain tried actually tried to separate them? to really try and make them suffer the one way they know how– creating their worst nightmare in real life.

so, our unnamed villainess because im on the creative thin line right now, uses our psychic ally to tear apart a hole in the fabric of reality and creates chaos throughout all of existence. and, well… you can see what happens.

enter our two main alternate detectives.

throughout the hub-bub of reality being torn apart, our four detectives are mixed up;

our max is stuck with another sam, and our sam is stuck with another max. throughout trying to track down our villain.

you get to jump through different worlds as comedy ensues. you can play as either sam OR max– thats right you can play as the fucking lagomorph psycho.

there are two different roads you can take to track down our villainess, with sam going down the much more clue-filled path where you have to be clever. max, however, goes down the violently-interrogating-everyone path. unsurprising.

sam and max both meet our villainess at around the same time. now since it’s dimension hopping, there’s… obviously gonna be more than one villain. now we’ve already established she isn’t above murdering people.

sam is a calm person. at this point in the game he’s pretty much figured out this max is not his max. he’ll come in and try to arrest her, and by arrest i mean letting max decimate her before turning her in and surprisingly not getting arrested for police brutality. basically the same thing happens with our max as well but much more violently. and, well…

she points the gun at sam. she threatens to kill him in a gruesome fashion. she hates him more than she does max.

here is a picture of what i think their office would look like to break up the chunks of text. this isnt a fucking fanfic. actually it sort of is but fuck it

for our sam, other max is extra.. protective. and trigger happy. so he tries to jump her. and, well, she isn’t dumb. max kind of.. gets shot in the face. yeah. im an angsty angsty motherfucker.

for our max, is almost the same. max gets ready to jump at her, and as she moves to shoot max and max moves to try and rip off as many of her limbs at once, sam moves to cover his little buddy. and, uh, well im predictable.

so… watching their best buddy (or atleast another version of them) getting murdered right in front of your face without being able to do anything about it? that shit messes you up.

villainess would probably make a quip about the situation before disappearing, throwing our sam and max to rot in a timeless void of a pocket dimension. enter cutscene.

now, throwback..! remember new bosco and the smart ass person? smart ass is a smart ass for a reason. bosco is fucking insane and surprisingly his theory on space physics rings true.

they open up a hole for sam and max to jump back in through. they are still separated at this point. now max is trying to track down villainess and try and restore all of space. oh! i should have mentioned. the rupture in dimensional travel and space is kind of destroying everything. anyway, max is now tearing through space in a fucked desoto trying to find the villainess and definitely trying to murder her. sam, being all of max’s moral compass and control, is now (in his mind) dead and he needs revenge. now while sam is tracking him (trying to find his own max! d’aw) they’re doing more bad than good to the fragile lifeforce of space. psychic ally astral projects and tells them both that they’re fuckin up and making a mistake. max tries to shoot her. sam pleas. shes strugglin to even speak with them but she’ll do her best.

badabing badaboom, max drives through a wall and finds villainess’ headquarters. sam quickly catches up and is like !!!! little buddy!!!! boom boom fight or whatever the fuck. heartfelt reunion! people are saved. but how will they fixed the fractured existence of the universe? bang scavenger hunt (im not sorry i fucking love searching for shit in games i dont know why) so that allies can make cool thing and fix universe.

boom. everything fixed. villain is like dead probably. thats my game idea i hope its not dumb

lemme know what yall think. i cant think of any cool name other than “Sam & Max; Freelance Police (The FanGame)”

i desperately want new sam and max content in this day and age.

Review and Recap : “Something’s Fishy” (Spoilers Ahead)

Sleep deprivations dumb. I’m dumb lol. Anyway time for a R&R! Spoilers abound!

RECAP

We start the episode off with an ugly chameleon suit, which Fred wanted Hiro to design for... some reason. While trying to attempt the camouflage function on the... Fredmeleon Suit, Aunt Cass walks in. Fred activates the camouflage function. Cass asks what Hiro is doing the garage in which he says he’s working on a school project. Cass goes on and tells Hiro that an old friend is coming back to San Fransokyo, and he has a daughter named Megan who is the same age as him (all while Fred is walking around the garage, invisible). After Fred grapples into a storage shelf, Hiro leads Cass outside in an attempt to distract her. Gogo calls Hiro notifying him that High Voltage broke out of jail again. After some mishaps, Cass mentions that she set him up on a date with Megan, much to his dismay.

After the intro we pan into Mole’s comic book store, where Gogo and Fred have come to catch High Voltage who will most likely go there and steal the Orb. After a while of waiting, Gogo leaves saying High Voltage is clearly not coming.

At Sycorax, Liv Amara wants High Voltage to help her with something. High Voltage refuses, saying how Crime dancing is not normal. Liv says that nothing coming frees and that High Voltage can be normal after they pay her. Liv says she is going to call the police if they don’t help her, so they agree. Barb says that they are going to need their energy orb, but Liv says she has something better.

At the Lucky Cat Cafe, Cass is introducing Megan to Hiro. After awkwardly talking about robots and an awkward silence, Baymax mentions ways on how they can communicate, Hiro tells Baymax to wait somewhere else. Hiro and Megan try to talk, although Cass interrupts bringing them food and lemonade. They continue to talk, with Baymax and Cass hovering out the window.

Somewhere in San Fransokyo, High Voltage rob a bank, only to be stopped by Gogo and Fred. The fight starts, Gogo running towards them only for Juniper to show a new trick, the chip allows her to generate electricity on her own. High Voltage win against Gogo and Fred and run off into an alleyway.

At Joe’s Diner, Megan and Hiro talk casually. Megan talks about the time she was late and her father had the entire police force looking for her, but Hiro says he doesn’t really do much in his free time. Gogo notifies Hiro and Hiro says he has to go. At SFIT, the Big Hero 6 try to solve the question of how High Voltage got there new powers. The news mentions how the Aquarium’s Electric Eels (named AC and DC, fun science name) have gone missing, leading Fred to make a connection, saying the High Voltage is part eel. Everyone says that’s crazy. Honey Lemon also gets inspiration for something from a gum bunny (which is cute).

Somewhere else, High Voltage have finally payed Liv and start there life of not crime. Although they start feeling hungry and have a craving for seafood and decide to do one last crime, robbing a seafood truck.

At the Lucky Cat Cafe, Megan and Hiro are having a study session. Hiro mentions how he was a kid when he was going to high school. Megan says how dances might’ve been awkward, but Hiro says he never did stuff like that. Megan invites him to a dance at her school, Hiro accepts.

Meanwhile, Fred, Gogo, and Baymax are interrogating the Sea Food Truck Driver. Gogo asks if Baymax can scan for High Voltage, Baymax being unable to locate them.

At SFIT, Hiro, Wasabi, and Honey Lemon are playing a great game of tennis. Baymax notes how Hiro was acting weird. Hiro asks Honey Lemon and Wasabi about high school, noting that he sometimes thinks about how he thinks he’s missing out on stuff normal kids do.

Later that day, Hiro and Megan get ready for the dance, with Cass being the embarrassing Aunt. At the dance, Hiro is officially confirmed that he is not good at dancing. He also notices that High Voltage is there. The Big Hero 6 (well 5 not counting Hiro) come to arrest High Voltage. Barb has a wonderful musical scene about how they are going to go good. At the end they end up transforming into Electric Eel... people. Eelpeople. Juniper is sad about this, Barb tries to comfort her, but Wasabi ends up ruining that. High Voltage ends up going on a rampage at the dance, prompting a fight between them and Big Hero 6. Honey Lemon introduces a new Chemball she has that creates a gummy bunny-like suit that insulates electricity. It doesn’t last for long as the constant barrage of electricity starts to melt it. Hiro has Fred use his invisibility, meanwhile High Voltage start to get a liking towards their fish bodies and going back to crime. Fred manages to incapacitate High Voltage with the elasti-tongue of his suit, but High Voltage sets of the sprinkler system and uses Fred’s suit’s tongue as a wire and electrocutes him. High Voltage uses a total eel move of swimming on wet ground and run off.

Hiro goes back into his dance clothing and runs out the building, meeting Megan again. Megan seems elated at the fact that 2 supervillains appear at the dance, saying how it’s not normal. The police come and we meet Megan’s father, the chief of police, Chief Cruz. Chief Cruz shows a dislike towards superheroes, calling them vigilantes and how he will correct this problem.

At Sycorax, Liv Amara looks at her aquarium and the two new eels she has acquired, both being High Voltage.

REVIEW

This was such a good episode! I think Megan and Hiro will be a great friendship. And I’m glad High Voltage! Although I’m sad they never reformed and now they are ugly eelpeople! Also AC and DC stand for Alternating Current and Direct Current, nice name for eels. I love the new Chemball and Fred’s  new suit is nice. I feel like Chief Cruz is going be to important later down the line, maybe the second arc of the season is one of those “Police v. Heroes” kind of things. Overall, 9/10.

Week 7: Fog

February 16, 2038

The fog blankets the city, still and soft in the cool of the morning.

It would be pretty, except for the sky.

In the air overhead, everything is the startling red of fresh blood and the deep purple of old bruises; the clouds are thick clots of color, strange and shifting, like someone’s managed to project a freeze frame of a nightmare into the real world.

Jacob’s barely paying attention to any of that.

He’s focused on the black thing hovering mid air in front of him – on the banks of eyes and disjointed wings, and the inky cavern of its mouth. That mouth is clamped down on the metal plating of Nemesis’ massive arm, and the HUD overlay shows Xia’s vitals going crazy.

She makes a sound, audible over the comms – alarmed but pissed off – and a burst of rapid gunfire explodes from the weapon mounted in her gauntlet, punching through the creature’s back. It trembles, as though in pain.

Then the exit wounds just slide closed again, like someone's pressed putty into the holes in a wall.

“Lemme give it a shot,” says Jacob, into the comms. He wheels around in the air, darting closer. “Hold still.”

Xia gives the creature another shake. “Tell that to this thing. It won’t stop –” The black shape shifts again, forcing its way up to her elbow. On the HUD, Jacob’s displays tells him that her suit’s arm has gone dead, no longer receiving power. “– doing that.”

“For real, dude, incoming!”

Xia shoves Nemesis’ arm out, in a straight line, holding the creature as far from her as she’s able – then she keeps still, for the two seconds it takes Jacob to close the distance.

He slices through the thing with his blades, carbon steel parting glossy black flesh like rotten jelly.

“Gross,” says Jacob, as the blades come out the other side, severing the thing’s – mouth? Head? He’s pretty sure it’s the head, right up until a bank of eyes open along its left flank.

Whatever it was, Xia doesn’t waste the opportunity. She yanks a grenade out of the casing in Nemesis’ massive chest cavity; the pin pulls free automatically with the withdrawal, and she shoves it, hard, into the gaping hole in the creature’s side before the flesh can knit closed again.

“We gotta move,” says Xia, and Jacob doesn’t need to be told twice.

He jets upward, far enough to get clear but close enough that he can still see; he wants a good show for the fireworks.

The muffled crump of the explosion is muted by the sound controls in the suit he’s wearing. He watches as the creature balloons outward, spraying into pieces and raining down onto the street below.

Jacob peers down at what’s left of it. “I could go like five years and never see one of those things again,” he says. “Not gonna lie.”

“You and me both,” says Xia. She’s got her palm open, face down, over the malfunctioning arm – running diagnostics, most likely. “That’s the last one, yeah?”

“Yeah,” says Jacob. “Pretty sure.” Into the comms, he says, “You guys clear over in Shibuya?”

“All clear,” says Aisha, cool and collected. “Any trouble on your end?”

“I wouldn’t say trouble,” says Xia. “Definitely something weird, though.”

“Weird how?” says Will. “We’re talking eldritch alien beings, here. You’re going to have to get a little more specific.”

“Whole new kind of weird,” says Jacob. “Like someone made Jello out of ink or something. And then added eyes.”

“This thing had regen,” says Xia. “Shut off power to my arm, too.”

“Wait,” says Ari, voice high with alarm. “It regenerated?”

Jacob peers down at the street below them, to where the black blob-creature is splattered on the pavement along with the remains of the winged horrors they took out before it. It’s barely visible through the fog, but he thinks – yes, there. That was decidedly movement.

He drops in the air a little, nearer to the ground – watches as the spatters of black roll back toward each other, like spilled mercury.

“Uh,” says Jacob. “Is regenerating. Like, right now.”

“What?” says Ari, sharp and upset.

“Keep an eye on it,” says Aisha. “We’ll be there in five.”

“Hope you don’t mind being on cleanup duty,” says Xia. “Cause this thing’s going down way before then.”

On the ground, the creature’s beginning to piece itself back together again. The shape is slightly off – lopsided and malformed. But its eyes flicker open again, ten of them, all staring upward.

Xia reaches for her chest plate with the good arm, like she means to lob another grenade its way.

“Stand down,” says a voice over the comms, firm and authoritative.

It doesn’t sound like their contact in HQ. It’s definitely no one on Team Phoenix.

Still, it’s vaguely familiar, and Jacob’s still trying to place it right up until he turns around midair, searching for the source.

The suit is a glistening cobalt blue, shot through with silver. It stands a head and shoulders taller than Hurricane does, and its faceplate is tinted smoke grey to obscure the face behind. The gauntlets are set with laser blasters straight out of some fast-paced sci fi blockbuster.

Jacob should know. He put a model of this suit together on the kitchen floor when he was eleven years old, back when Team Alpha merchandise was all over the place. Jacob’s ma designed those blasters.

“Holy crap,” he blurts into the comms. “Justice?”

“Man,” says Xia, sarcastic and a little wary. “They’re really rolling out the red carpet on this one. All the stars are out tonight.”

Sure enough, Foresight is jetting toward them to flank Team Alpha’s leader, and Valiance along with her.

It kind of is a red-carpet moment. Alpha almost never gets deployed for standard cleanup ops, these days. HQ says their skill level’s better spent on other things.

What’s more important than keeping the city from getting snacked on by aliens, Jacob’s still not sure, but he’s seen Team Alpha’s suits up close all of once before, and he was a little distracted at the time.

“We’ll take it from here,” says Valiance, jetting down toward the ground, where the black creature has almost fully formed.

Xia snorts, and the comms pick it up as a harsh rush of air. “No kill steals,” she says. “I called dibs already.”

“Least let us help,” says Jacob. “We did pretty good getting this thing down the first time, right?”

“We’ll be okay,” says Foresight. “Just head back to HQ.”

When Jacob and Xia look toward each other – a shared glance, if not for the metal plating blocking the line of sight – Justice shakes his head. “That’s an order, pilots. Straight for HQ. We’re on cleanup.”

Nemesis’ head tips down, mirroring Xia’s body language when she’s spoiling for a fight. Jacob can picture the way her lips are probably pressed together behind the faceplate, that familiar stubborn set to her jaw.

“Not much left to clean up,” she says, tight – but Nemesis lifts up into the air, turning back toward the Tenno building.

Jacob lingers a moment longer – takes in the way Foresight’s swooping in to touch down beside the creature on the ground.

It’s a weird move, kind of.

Foresight’s a support class suit – high shields, stun grenades, high-voltage electrical nets to help with crowd control. Jacob’s not big on tactics, but he’s pretty sure putting the support on the front lines is a bad call. He’s played enough RPGs to know that.

“Cross,” says Justice, harder this time.

“Right,” says Jacob. “Yeah, sure. Yeah, I’m going.”

He wheels around in the air to follow Nemesis – guns it, to try and catch up.

Behind him, Team Alpha and the creature on the ground are swallowed up by the fog.

What was your inspiration for Star-Crossed Myth?

Inspiration? Hmm... Well, when it came to the world-building, I have this favorite phrase, ‘I wish something good would happen today.’ And, you know, while I was saying that to myself, I got to thinking ‘Gosh, wouldn’t it be great if some magical god or something could grant me any wish?’ Like ‘Hey, I want a million dollars. Here ya’ go!’ or ‘I want hot men to rain from the sky’ or whatever.’

Anyway, when my life’s getting a little bit dull, I find myself saying and wishing that. So that’s really where it all started.

Plus, when you’re wishing for something good, I feel like most people look to the stars. So imagine you’re wishing on a star, and then poof, there’s this beautiful man who’s here to make all your dreams come true! And I thought ‘Wow, that would be... amazing.’

So I drew inspiration from that romantic element as well.

Also – oh, be warned, this is about to get into philosophical territory here... Gods and princes have such a magical, beautiful quality about them, but the [gods in SCM are] besmirched with sin and wrongdoing – this dark, horrible thing. I think the juxtaposition of the beautiful and the ugly is just so fascinating. These gorgeous beings have marks of sin and have fallen from grace. They’re heavenly visions that cast very long, very dark shadows.

That’s where my main inspiration came from.

So, you were just on the train one morning, wishing for something good to happen, and then it hit you – ‘Oh, this is it. This is our next title’?

Kinda. Haha. I thought ‘Hey, how would you normally wish for something?’ Oh you’d wish on the stars, of course. And I was always interested in constellations and stuff. I was also really inspired by Christian Lassen and KAGAYA, who make these beautiful, otherworldly paintings I’ve always been fascinated with... Plus I love ancient myths.

I’d just watched Kaguya Hime [from Ghibli] before making this story as well. I liked the idea of giving this beautiful creature an awful sin. Seeing that movie really struck a chord with me.

I drew inspiration from a LOT of places, but that’s how it always works. Stories never come one from one source; they’re born from a collection of different ideas.

What sort of research did you during, or even before you started, the project?

So much. Oh so much. We looked up lots of Grecian and Celtic myths. Plus myths and stories about the constellations... We also did a LOT of research when it came to their names. We looked at Latin, and so many different spellings and languages. We played around with all of those names, trying to make them a) easy to read and b) immediately recognizable as their constellation. There was a lot of wrestling with the names, trying to get them just right. I mean, Dui nearly became Geminee.

Wait, really? Geminee? ...What other names did you come up with?

Oh man... an uncountable number, really. For Leon we were afraid it was TOO on-the-nose, plus it’s the title of a very famous movie. In the end we just went for it because we appreciated its simplicity. Wow, this brings back so many memories... I just loved making this game. It was such a fun time in my life.

We researched French, Spanish, German, Greek, Russian, Hindi... Ichthys actually came from Hindi and Greek. The star sign Gemini in both English and Latin is Gemini, or something very close anyway, but in Greek it’s Didymoi, which is where we got the inspiration for Dui.

Karno was really interesting. In every language Cancer is pronounced totally differently, so his name ended up becoming a hybrid of a bunch of languages.

We even researched all of the constellations’ scientific names. We were thorough.

We were also really careful to make sure their names didn’t mean anything in any of the target languages... I mean, we wouldn’t name a character Cancer, that’s just crazy.

Oh, right... Zyglavis and Tauxolouve. We felt that the ‘lavis’ and ‘louve’ endings gave their names a Grecian flare. Obviously, we couldn’t call all the gods ‘something-louve’ or ‘whatever-lavis,’ so we tried to strike a balance with their names, making them easy to read and understandable while at the same time sounding mystical.

Dui was definitely the hardest one for us to come up with. We debated forever whether to make his name ‘Dui’ based or ‘Gemini’ based. In the end we thought ‘Ugh, Geminee is way too cute. Not happening.’

Do you prefer to write fantasy-based scenarios or ones based on everyday life?

I like writing both, but... we talked about this a little before, but I like my romances to be really profound, not just cutesy moments with some arm-candy. I prefer stories with lots of ups and downs, with a love that’s intense. Everyday stories are fine, but my preference tends to skew more fantasy, I guess.

It’s not every day we’re dealing with problems like ‘If I love you I may actually die.’ Haha. I enjoy getting deep into stories and exploring the concept of love. You can do that in a “slice of life” story, but it’s easier to do in fantasy.

Which god would you personally like to date?

If I were being realistic...? Karno. He’d come straight home after work, he’d be waiting for you with a kind word or two. Huedhaut would be nice too. He’s smart, he’s stable, he’s incredibly faithful – he’d never ever cheat... But I’d still choose Leon.

Karno and Hue would make me happy, sure, whatever... but I want to date Leon.

There are some characters who would be tough to date... I can imagine Scorpio being difficult. It would be the biggest headache dating him. Haha!

How do you come up with character designs? Do you give specific directions to the artists? Or do you give them free rein, more or less?

We need the characters’ designs to match their personalities. With SCM, for example, Leon is a proud god and super sexy, so we asked the artist to put him in a pose that would reflect that. His sexiness can be seen in his open collar; he’s got his neck exposed a bit. That’s really important when making characters... One look and you should be able to see their personalities, more or less. For Huedhaut, we gave him a little bolero tie to make him look like a gentleman, but his hair is wavy and almost covers his eyes, which we thought helped hint at his darker past...

We make the characters’ personalities in house, and then offer those notes to the artists. We literally give them free rein over how they draw; we want them to be inspired so they can come up with something amazing. ...We give them notes, of course. Like ‘He’s gonna have red hair’ or whatever, but we try to give them hints rather than full-blown direction. Once we have the first drafts then we give more specific notes, but otherwise, it’s all the artist.

The eSCRAMBLER by Shanghai Customs

This article was written by Matthew Waddick of Shanghai Customs. When possible we like to bring you the story of a build in the words of the team that built it, to cut out the middle man and give you direct insight into their thought process and methodology.

The eSCRAMBLER – Design

The eSCRAMBLER is designed entirely from scratch by ex-Yamaha Japan Advanced Labs Industrial Designer and former Danish Flat Tracking champion Michel Riis. Michel comes from a speedway and motocross family, has a master’s degree in industrial design from the Design School of Kolding and has been building and racing bikes since he was 12 years old. Michel’s design brief was for a mid-size motorcycle with similar proportions to the Shanghai Customs eTRACKER concept, a more powerful mid drive motor, belt drive, refined design and production ready – meaning toolings, CNC welding jigs and molded parts. The bike also needed to be able to handle crazy-fast speeds and have good practical ‘real world’ range (up to 150km/hr, 0–100 in 3.2 seconds, and minimum 150km range per charge). This required a completely new design and development from the ground up.

There are a ton of electric scooters, light electric motorcycles (mainly in the off-road segment), as well as expensive electric sports bikes. However, there still isn’t much in this high-level custom styled mid-sized motorcycle segment and definitely nothing I’ve seen in production so far. This is mostly due to design challenges – it is challenging to make these look good whilst delivering speed and range at a price that the consumer can accept. The amount of suppliers needed to complete a project like this as well as homologation and putting it into production – it becomes too difficult for most.

Having such a talented designer like Michel on the team, who also has the ‘hands on’ custom and practical skills, meant we could design the bike from the inside out, rather than wasting time on over the top sketches and building down trying to make them work. Michel started off with some basic dimensions and proportion layouts which were loosely based on the concept eTRACKER, before sketching and adding in the CAD over the top. It was then a process of back and forth – cad – sketching – cad – sketching on each component until it was ready to prototype. We started with the core structure, box and frame, as opposed to more stylistic items such as the ‘tank’. This meant we could understand the bike more and how it would actually work and fit together. It was all very practical with Matthew’s engineering team building in tandem on the ground. This greatly simplified the process and made assembly of the bike easier and cheaper for mass production.

We want people to understand this bike, see how it is all put together – to demystify electrics and especially not hide that we have a box full with cells. However, the design was not as easy as it looks – in fact it was incredibly difficult. Generally, making a complex product look simple is one of the hardest things to do and this is especially true with electric bikes.

Michel began with basic box sketch designs and built the frame around this. Working in collaboration with the engineering team, myself, Sam Dekok and Hector Alvarez, we developed the initial pack size and unique internal (proprietary) design with a power of 11kWh (going up to 13kwh), which is very big for a midsize motorcycle (the same as the zero SR). The cells are cooled using aluminium and copper heat transfer plates inside the box which dissipate the heat out through the box, covers and cooling fins.

The eSCRAMBLER mid drive motor outputs a whopping 50kW so we knew the ride would be fast and a super strong. The vast majority of electric bikes tend to hide parts away under plastics and fairings and use a drop in/perimeter style frame where the box slips in the middle and the controller sits on top under the tank or covering. I wanted a double cradle style tube frame – I’ve always loved them, they’re super strong and add a retro/soulful element that most electric bikes just don’t have. This was easier said than done and quite a few times we almost gave up but eventually Michel, with clever use of lines, bends radiuses and angles, as well as combining with moulded parts with aluminium tubes was able to make it work brilliantly. We ended up working with the same frame engineers who make the ZERO frames so we also had great support and quality to draw on.

The minimalistic and strong swing arm was designed from scratch and a lot of engineering work went into fitting it with the frame as well as the suspension and motor. Michel used a simple silhouette for the shape, making it look simple from a distance, but added a lot of small details to make it stand out when you are next to the bike. ‘I love to have small highlights show the lines I want people to notice’ combined with the shadows the design accents show depending on light and angles.

Another engineering challenge was we wanted the motor and the motor axle in the centre of the swing arm pivot with the belt drive train coming directly off the motor, opposed to some sort of complex gearing or pulley system or forward/back/up motor placement. Again, all of this easier said than done, there is placement issues, motor RPM issues, sprocket ratio issues, swing arm design, the swing arm axle and a lot of work around the bearings and swing arm contact point. In addition, as anyone who has swapped an engine knows, alignment issues with getting the tire lined up in the centre. We have been working closely with Gates who provide the carbon fibre belt – they have been great, and we designed the gorgeous rear sprocket to suit. With such a powerful bike, Michel pushed for a super strong triple tree which he designed to hold our upside-down forks and stunning e-mark and DOT approved LED front headlight and indicators. Rims are 18inch aluminium front and back. We decided to opt out of retro twin shocks and went with a more modern central mono shock thus dropping the tracker name and evolving into trademarked eSCRAMBLER, but we do plan on releasing a twin shock eTRACKER variant with some other subtle modifications in the near future.

There was a big emphasis on details – the leather seat, controller cooling and electronics pan (which sits under the seat), CNC’d foot pegs, foot levers, rear light, all kinds of mounts and brackets – just an extraordinary amount of work all reproducible for production and simply gorgeous. The bike gets better and better the closer you look which makes it great for photo shoots. There are no imperfections on this bike as we have designed every detail.

Most of the crew are from custom bike backgrounds so the eSCRAMBLER was definitely built with this in mind. It’s a production bike, but also a good clean platform to do custom builds on. The sub frame and tank are easily changed, which will change the look of the bike to fit different purposes and styling, including number of seats. SWITCH is a production motorcycle company, but we will work with custom builders, including Shanghai Customs and others all over the world to develop, build and sell custom versions.

The eSCRAMBLER – Technical Details and Specs

Aesthetics are one thing, but for people to really fall in love, the bike needs to perform. One of the main benefits of electric bikes over gas bikes is the awesome instant torque, therefore we wanted a battery/controller/motor combo that could do 0-100 3-3.2 seconds. The truth is we still have a bit to go before we are at full power, but the tech and packing inside is awesome.

The controller can deliver an insane 900amps to the motor and has field weakening, meaning more power at lower voltages. This means we are able to stay at 72v, which is much more stable than the higher voltages, better for homologation purposes and means we can up the amps (currently at 144Ah) for take-off speed. The other tech is pretty cool too and I’ve spent a lot of time on this. The bike has integrated wi-fi so we are able to see real-time updates and performance globally, lap times as well as a plethora of battery monitoring and other diagnostic information from anywhere in the world. This means Michel can be thrashing around the track in Aarhus, Denmark while we can be monitoring, adjusting his settings after each lap/race from Shanghai in real time. The bike is also equipped with built in GPS tracking, digital display, 3 speed modes, cruise control, battery level indicator, regenerative braking, USB phone charging and all the other gadgets that you would expect from a high end electric motorcycle. We are working on the fast charging system at the moment.

All suppliers of the components on the bike are top quality. A big part of my work has been to get top level suppliers on board and supportive of the project and we couldn’t do it without such support so it’s been great to see! The braking system is supplied by the Spanish company JJuan, forks and rims are used on KTM, Carbon Fibre belts is by Gates USA, Battery cells by Panasonic and the Taiwanese controller company Mopibus (one of the best in the world) is working with us on the tech. We are also developing the ABS system at the moment with BOSCH.

The ‘tank’ is another item on electric bikes that always seems to get a lot of comments. Putting a gasoline tank on is just ridiculous, but at the same time, and particularly with this style of bike, some sort of heritage or natural evolution of design is required. This ‘tank’ is another Michel Riis special and he spent a long time on this with numerous designs and trials before we got it right. The lines, the way shadows form on the edges creating the contrasts between the different highlights and shadows is just gorgeous. It’s a super complex piece that covers all the 12v electronics and we are working on a lid which will open with a small compartment for gloves and phone.

Finishing was also important and it would have been criminal to paint over that aluminium frame so instead we treated and polished it. I think in production we will also keep the raw look, but maybe some painted too. We finished the aluminium battery box in a semi-gloss anodized dark grey, and the ‘tank’ in a Volvo metallic blue to accentuate the sculptured shapes. The welding level is stunning so we left the welds untouched in most places. There are just so many details to the bike, everywhere you look, foot pegs, mounts, brackets, adapters, foot lever., et al – when people see the effort that has gone in and the minimalist beauty of the eSCRAMBLER they just want to touch it.

Homologation and Testing

There a bit of work to do until we get to market. The pack needs to be put through its paces, thoroughly tested, and there is still some modifications to do for a tank–glove box plus some tidbits here and there. However we are now entering the homologation stage and have begun working with DEKRA on the type approvals. The process and testing is complicated but they have been super supportive and great to work with, it’s much better to be making the changes now rather than later. The other big thing is the ABS system which takes a minimum of 9 months and for this we are working with BOSCH who have also been super helpful. You can’t just buy an existing ABS system and hack it on, the whole thing is painstakingly matched and tested under all conditions.

We will be releasing the road legal version in 2022. The good news is that we don’t need homologation and abs for the track and will begin really putting the bike through its paces this year on the Scandinavian flat tracking circuit with some world champions already lining up to have a thrash. It was Michel’s personal dream was to create an electric bike you could use as your daily ride and also have track days – ‘the simplicity is perfect, you can focus on riding and not be distracted by the loud noise from your gas engine’.

It’s been challenging, but we are getting there and can’t wait to see the eSCRAMBLER initially on the track and then the road!

When you think of no prep racing, you would normally think of the thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies. Jared “Squirrel” McNickle takes that just a bit farther. Jared is the driver of the iconic light blue, newer body, small tire mustang. He works as a Journeyman lineman, which means he works on high voltage lines high up in the air dangling from helicopters by a rope like it’s a fun sport. Just some good ole heart pumping fun is all. Although he currently works in San Francisco on the trolley lines, dangling from helicopters and jumping from pole to pole. That is what helped mold him into the racer he is today. At one point he was involved in a non-life-threatening accident with his finger. The top part of his finger was smashed off and all emergency workers thought their equipment was broken or he was in shock because he was cool as a cucumber, laughing and telling jokes all the while his vitals were all stable, in fact, better than most normal people. That’s just one of the many interesting stories Jared can share with you. It’s always fun to hear how drivers got themselves into racing. There are usually two types, one, the family were all gear heads and it’s just in their blood, or two, the drivers who stumbled upon it and the car became their outlet in life. Jared is the second type. His family was never into cars, his dad was a Journeyman as well. While growing up his sister had a boyfriend who was into drag racing. Jared would tag along to track days, he would help as best he could and watch the pairs go down the line. That is where he and Jody Davis, of Torco Racing Fuels, met. Jody was a drag racer then, and his brother was Jared’s age. They became fast friends and now Jody is a sponsor of his. Jared’s first car was a 1970 Chevelle, not just for racing, but because he has always had a love for older cars and the way they looked. He used to bracket race the Chevelle and a Honda Civic. He also had a split bumper Camaro. Jared’s family could never understand how he could possibly come home week after week with trophies, racing a Civic that ran 24.30’s in the quarter mile. The intimacy one needs to have with their car is how trophies are won. Bracket racing is not who is the fastest, but it is who knows the car the best. Jared knew his car so well that he would win time and time again against the fastest cars allowed on those brackets nights. Because he was so good at knowing his cars, he would even take his parents cars to the track to get those dial in’s just right. He then, of course, did not have their permission and would get in trouble when they would find shoe polish leftover somewhere on their windows. Now Jared drives a 2010 GT 500 with a mod motor, on small tires. Although he is currently building a big tire car. “It’s hard to get noticed without a race your way in and being on the west coast, especially on small tires”. Last year he ran every single class he possibly could. Any and all small tire categories he signed up for. He would sometimes only have 10 minutes in between runs to get back to the lanes. He also has a 1991 Olds Mobile Cutlass Supreme, three-speed, hemi, blown, big tire. Since he went to school for bodywork and painting, he doesn’t mind putting in a little work when he gets new project cars. Tucson Dragway is where Jared calls home for all his testing, tuning and drag racing needs. It is the most non-prepped track he has ever driven on. San Antonio is his second favorite. He sings the praises of the surfaces of both strips. Of course, Xtreme Raceway is on the top of his list as well, which seems to be the top pick for the majority of these drivers. His goal is to visit and race every race track there is, to see how different each one can be, and how the environment affects the cars. A trip to South Georgia Motorsports Park would be epic for him, to see what his car can really do, “that track seems to be good luck with everyone breaking records there”. When asked about the preference between ¼ and 1/8 mile, he prefers the 1/8 because that is what he has been working with recently. One day he would like to do some ¼ mile competition at the top sportsman national event. Jared will always pick track over the street, for safety reasons of others as well as wanting to keep his work life stable. Most drivers have full-time jobs they need to keep in order to race the events that they do. Jared happens to rely on his CDL and cannot afford to have that stripped away due to any non-permitted street racing. Growing up Jared did not have any race idols per se, but he does have someone he wants to race badly, Shawn (Murder Nova) Ellington. Jared isn’t sure but he believes Shawn or a friend or family of Shawn is a Journeyman like himself and wants to have some friendly competition with him down the line. To get from race to race, Jared hits a few snags each time. Because he trailers his own vehicle and works throughout the week, he has to ask for favors from friends and sometimes even strangers to store his trailer for a few weeks at a time. “It’s hard to run your car when you aren’t a tuner, and you need people to help you get from race to race and to help line you up once you do get there.” This is just proof that this No Prep lifestyle is hard on everyone, no matter what your status is and where you live. Living and working on the west coast isn’t all glam when the main races are held in the midwest and east coast. However, he did sign up for Outlaw Armageddon and plans on racing as much as he can on the west coast to get in some seat time. All of this may sound crazy to some of you, but Jared has a motto: “you never know when your time is up, so live the life you want to”. This way of living was something he adopted a few years ago after his dad had passed away. After his dad’s passing, his mother became fully involved in Jared’s race life. She has been his number one fan. She helps him with ordering his parts since he is rarely home. She takes inventory of them for him. She even helps with shipping and returning them. You can find her at any given race with him standing right beside her best friend and son. On a hot day when everyone else is looking for the shade you’ll find this wonderful woman right next to him fanning him down when he is all suited up, strapped in and ready to make a pass. Not only does his mother help him as best she can he can’t thank his sponsors enough for all they do and continue to do daily. They are Lloyd and Dustin Coker from CKR Fab, Brian Macy and Kelvy Lemon from EFI Store, Matthew Slavsky from Kustom Classics, Ryan Jakey from Fab 1, Jody Davis from Torco Racing Fuels, and Jarrod Beaver from Pat’s Auto Repair Service. Jared is known more so by his nickname Squirrel. There can be so many reasons as to why and how he acquired this name. To say he is enthusiastic is an understatement. He is always willing to talk and tell a story. He is friendly, always positive and bouncing around. He even gave an example of how he can be squirrely in his own mind. So i filled in the registration document, rang up the DVLA and re-registered the vehicle as SORN again.
