Mahama promises to bridge gap between Article 71 office holders and workers
Tumblr media
The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has assured Ghanaian workers that the next NDC administration will work to complete the processes already begun to review and bridge the remuneration and entitlement of public sector workers and Article 71 office holders.
Speaking at a consultative meeting with the leadership of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Kasoa on Wednesday, the former President said the review and establishment of an Independent Emoluments Commission will ensure fairness in remunerations and compensation.
Mr. Mahama noted that the establishment of the Commission was one of the recommendations of the Constitution Review Commission and intended among others to create a fair salary structure for all categories of public sector workers.
“There are other things in there… amend article 71 and set up an Independent Emolument Commission so that from the President right down to the smallest public sector worker, we will have a fair scale to address everybody. It is a commitment that we can make because it was us who superintended over it, so when we come we will continue the process.”
President Mahama, who was accompanied to the meeting by the NDC General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia, a former Vice Chancellor of the UPSA Professor Joshua Alabi, a former Minister for Education Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and other party functionaries, said the NDC and the TUC are age-old social partners who share the same ideologies.
“These ideologies are aligned and in consonance with the spirit to fight for the rights of workers”, he noted, adding that as a social Democratic Party, the NDC will continue to focus on putting in place safety nets to cater for both the poor and vulnerable while allowing the market economy, including Ghanaian-owned businesses, to flourish.
President Mahama also condemned the Akufo-Addo led government for using the National Communications Authority to muzzle media houses it considered sympathetic to the NDC. He described the decision of the NCA to close down some radio stations as an affront to freedom of speech and expression.
Mr. Mahama reminded the TUC of the incidents that characterised the infamous Ayawaso West Wuogun by-election and challenged them as stakeholders in the democratic journey, to join in ensuring that the 2020 elections are conducted peacefully and in a transparent manner.
He called on the Electoral Commission to respect the processes including the role of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), noting that Ghana has created a niche for itself in the comity of nations as a model of electoral success in Africa.
General Secretary of the TUC, Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah, in recalling President Mahama’s relationship with the TUC extolled his leadership qualities, referring to him as “a true human being, a man of peace, tolerance and humility”.
“If Prof. Mills was Asomdweehene I, then John Mahama is Asomdweehene II… peace is the greatest legacy any leader can bequeath to a nation”, he stated.
The TUC meeting is part of a series of ongoing engagements and consultations with identifiable groups and key stakeholders ahead of the drafting of the party’s manifesto for the 2020 elections.

Mahama’s popularity on test as NDC decides today
Tumblr media
Former President John Mahama’s popularity in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will be put to test today as he battles six other aspirants for the flagbearer slot of the party ahead of the 2020 elections. Over 260,000 delegates of the NDC will be voting across the 275 constituencies in the country to elect a leader who must win with a simple majority of the votes. Some of the contestants are former appointees of the former President in the erstwhile NDC government who say they can do better than their boss. The aspirants include former NHIA boss Sylvester Mensah, former Trade minister Dr. Spio-Gabrah, former Majority leader Alban Bagbin and former VC of UPSA Professor Joshua Alabi . The election will be supervised by the electoral commission. Ahead of the polls, professor Alabi has claimed there are attempts to compromise the process in favour of one of the candidates – Mahama has endured such accusations from supporters of the other candidates. He told Starr News Friday there is evidence to suggest an attempt to compromise the polls. “Some of the seals to some of the boxes sent to the constituencies for the polls have been removed an that is a source of worry to us. Example again is at Prampram where our people noticed that the seals to the boxes have been broken and we think that our party should be able to go beyond these things in an internal contest, they are not right for a free and fair election,” he said. Nonetheless, the former UPSA Vice Chancellor said he is confident of winning the polls. Also blowing his horns on Starr News was the former NHIA boss Sylvester Mensah who said his basket is full and ready for victory despite attempts to frustrate some candidates in favour of another. Former Trade Minister Ekow Spio-Gabrah also noted victory is ahead of him tomorrow as delegates see him as the most experienced in the contest. Political watchers say the former President should be able to garner over 70% of the votes to bolster his chances in the 2020 elections. Source: Starrfm Read the full article

NDC Presidential Race: Why Victor Gbeho, Ken Dzirasah et al are against Mahama
The NDC stalwarts insisted that the party cannot win the 2020 elections with Mahama as its flagbearer.
Former Foreign Affairs Minister, James Victor Gbeho and some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have personal scores to settle with former President John Mahama.
A former Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Kenneth Dzirasah, MP for Keta, Richard Quashigah, former MP Nii Amasah Namoale have all kicked against Mahama being the presidential candidate of the NDC in the 2020 polls.
They all insisted that the NDC cannot win the 2020 elections with Mahama as its flagbearer because he's a failure.
There has been an uneasy calm in the NDC since they were sent packing by the electorate in favour of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on December 7, 2016.
READ MORE: Mahama will win by 85% - Ablakwa predicts
It heightened when it became clear that Mahama is preparing to contest the presidential election once again, using the NDC Unity Walk as a stepping stone.
Some elders of the party, especially those from the Volta Region, the NDC's stronghold, have dumped Mahama for Prof Joshua Alabi.
Victor Gbeho took a swipe at Mahama recently when he called him a failure for leading the party to a miserable defeat in 2016.
The diplomat said the time has come for the NDC to rebrand and build on its shortfalls in 2016 by electing a flagbearer, who has a better chance of leading the party to win adding that he sees those qualities in the former rector [Alabi].
On the part of Kenneth Dzirasah, he said Prof Alabi is more marketable Mahama.
According to him, the difficulty in marketing Mahama stems from the NDC losing the 2016 elections which has informed his (Dzirasah's) decision to back Professor Joshua Alabi for the contest.
"I want to say that after several reflections on the way forward for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), myself and my good brother, Ambassador Gbeho, conducted few investigations and came to the conclusion that the most marketable personality that could carry us into the year 2020, as a flagbearer, is Joshua Alabi," he said.

The Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, Nii Lante Vanderpuye on Tuesday hinted that out of the 106 NDC Minority MPs, a total of 94 have endorsed Mahama's candidature.
But MP for Keta, Richard Quashigah expressed doubts about the number 94 being quoted by his colleague.
According to him, he thinks Alabi who has exhibited demonstrable character was the best to lead the NDC.
He said Mahama did his best for the party and it is time for a new beginning and a new leadership.
Contestants
Among those who have indicated their interest to lead the party are former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Sylvester Mensah, Dr. Ekow Spio Garbah, a former Trade and Industry, former Vice Chancellor of the University for Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof. Joshua Alabi, Elikplim Agbemava and second deputy Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.
The party's national congress is scheduled for December 7, 2018, to elect one person.
