The sentence "Being a short fiction writer is hard" threw me. I thought, "What does height have to do with it?"
How about, "Being a short story writer?" Or "Being a writer of short stories?"
I'm a full-time, professional fiction and nonfiction writer. I just had a short story published in Cricket Magazine a few months back, so I know of what I speak (including don't submit to Cricket Media LLC, the fuckers don't pay on time).
I have a problem with this list because I tried to see it for free and it wanted me to sign in to a Ko-Fi with my email. Hm.
If this person wants to share all this info for free, it should be right up front, for free. So why isn't it?
As a writer you need to expect to use a little mental elbow grease to locate publications, but it's not that difficult. Really, it's as easy as Googling "Where to submit short stories."
Freedom With Writing lists all genres of short fiction, published online and in hard copy, and not just in the U.S.. They also list grants, contests, and fellowships. Sign up for their free newsletter; I use it for finding potential new gigs.
The Write Life has a list of periodicals to submit to.
Writer's Digest often mentions publications looking for submissions. You don't need to buy a subscription. They have lots of articles you can glean through on their website. They also have a short story contest.
24 of the Best Journals Accepting Short Story Submissions.
45 Literary Magazines To Submit To.
Literary Magazines.
Links to short story magazines around the world.
128 Active Publications That Pay You for Short Stories in 2024. You need to create an account to access this, which I haven't because I can find this info on my own. But use your discretion.
And I can't stress this enough: Once you find a publication that sounds like it may be a good fit, go to their website and check their submission guidelines. Some lists of publications may be out of date -- publications often change editors and staff and what they're looking for -- so double-check. Follow their guidelines to the letter. Don't think you can ignore them. If the publication asks for your submission to be double-spaced with each page numbered, do that. Otherwise you'll be automatically rejected. No publication wants to deal with a writer who doesn't want to follow their rules.
Wherever you live, if you have access to a local library, USE IT. The Reference Librarian is your best friend. The library is your finest resource. Ask for the reference section for writing for publication. Ask if they have the current Writers Market. Writers Market lists all the periodicals looking for submissions. (Note: they no longer have a website due to their sale to Penguin Random House.)
If you're at college or university, check out their library (pun intended).
If your library is little and has few books about writing, ask the librarian to do an Inter Library Loan (ILL). This will find the books you're looking for anywhere in the U.S. and often abroad, and the librarian can request them to come to your library, for free.
If you're not in the U.S., do the same search online for periodicals in your country. And at your local library, if you have one.
Happy submitting!
Being a short fiction writer is hard. We painstakingly craft entire narratives, distilled to perfection, and when we're finally ready to publish...we slam face-first into a brick wall.
Rejections are par for the course, but we can't even get rejections if we don't know where to submit. There are so many wonderful magazines out there who are just waiting to read our work, but finding them can be difficult.
As a short fiction writer myself, I know the pain well.
Tumblr media
So, I decided to try and help. I've compiled a list of 140 magazines and counting, with information on the genres they accept, if they accept excerpts from longer works, word count limit, pay scale, simultaneous/republished/multiple acceptance status, and their response timeframes.
And the best bit? It's free. All I ask is that you give me a commission on what you make share this with other writers so getting published can be easier for us all.
Grab the database right hereeee.

Professional(?) authors/writers on here, I need some advice
I'm a writer...not a paid writer. But I have a passion for writing (stories, poetry, essays, etc), and really want to pursue it as a career. But I know realistically I can't financial support myself by only writing.
I'm currently working part time as a reading tutor for elementary school students, but I'm planning to look for a full time job soon because of personal, "I need my own space/place" reasons. But I have zero idea of what kind of jobs to apply for when I don't have a lot of job experience and deep down, all I want to do is write.
Can anyone provide me with some advice? Or tell me your experience as a writer and supporting yourself financially.

OMG, here we go again. :-<
@dduane was sent yet another "Great Story Idea I'd Love To See".
*****
That story idea, or anything resembling it will now NEVER be seen.
Do Not Send "Great Story Ideas" to professional writers.
They won't use them.
They CAN'T use them.
DON'T SEND THEM.
Or, as someone else might put it...
Tumblr media
And don't send fanfic set in the writer's universes either.
That should be obvious, but obvious doesn't work with some people. Oblivious is more their thing, so...
DON'T SEND FANFIC OF THEIR WORKS TO PROFESSIONAL WRITERS, YOU TWIT.
