so like i did write out something i doubt i'd ever draw. kind of the backstory for this whole thing, without backing myself into a corner with the nitty gritty of specifics in case i want to change anything.

this is 13 yr old raph, 12 yr old leo, and 9 yr old donnie and mikey on the day they left home. aka ran away from shredder.

warnings for referenced child abuse. nothing depicted, but character's talking about their experiences.

This was it.

Raphael calmly as he could walked out of Doctor Stockman's lab. Then down the hall. Down the stairs.

Then he started running towards their room. Ran down 4 flights, being careful not to be spotted by any guards on the way. Luckily, he was a very good ninja.

When he got to their room he saw all of his brothers and slammed the door behind him, leaning against it.

They all looked at him with confusion. Then worry. Mostly worry from Mikey.

He didn’t have time to answer questions right now. He shook off the nerves and looked at each of them.

“We need to leave. Right now.” He started grabbing Mikey's few beat up toys from his bed and pulled the pillow cover off his pillow, stuffing them all inside it like a sack.

“What?” Asked Donnie. He made no sign that he was going to move.

“Now?” Tried Leo. “Where the fuck was this last—“

“NOW!” Raph whisper shouted and stared at him. Leo saw something in his eye. He started to look worried and then looked around the room for anything he wanted.

Seeing Leo take it seriously, Donnie started doing the same.

Mikey watched Raph curiously, growing frustrated at he was touching his stuff. Raph then bent down to touch his arm.

“We’re not coming back here. I know where to get us safe, and I’m gonna get all your guys out too, we’re gonna be okay but you have to be the best most quietest fastest ninja you’ve ever been, got it?”

Mikey looked at him with a very determined look and nodded.

Raph looked at Donnie next, worrying how he would make it down 14 flights of stairs.

He assessed the room. Leo had a bag, Donnie had a bag, Raph had Mikey's bag.

He gave the bag of stuffed animals to Leo.

“You take this.” He turned to Donnie. “I know you don’t like this but I’m going to carry you. It’s a long way we have to be fast. I don't want you getting hurt and getting caught.”

Donnie sensed the seriousness and nodded, tying his pillow case into a bag and slinging the knot over his wrist. He held his arms out for a lift. Raph turned and bent down to give him a piggyback, then turned to face his other two brothers.

“Follow me. Stay quiet. Don’t be spotted. Don’t wander off. We’re going to the basement. There’s an exit. No questions, we deal with it later. Clear?”

They all nodded.

He turned, adjusting Donnie on his back, and then peered out the room. The coast was clear so he booked it for the stairs, carrying Donnie and vaguely sensing his brothers behind.

When he made it to the stairway he turned, checking they were there before he started jogging down. Mikey utilized the rails for a boost.

Everyone’s adrenaline pumped through their veins, this was the most serious mission they’d ever been on. It was a long way down, but they were fast.

When they made it to ground level Mikey was now in Leo’s arms, holding on to both of their bags. He must have gotten tired.

Raph checked the main hall. He saw a guard at either main exit. That didn't matter, they were headed somewhere else. He tucked and crawled out of view, turning into the maintenance room to the side and being very quiet as he tip toed down the metal stairs down. It was hard with the added weight of Donnie, but he was a professional.

By the time Mikey and Leo got down, they all heard a radio call from the main room.

Shredder was asking someone to check their room.

He eyed his brothers again and gestured with a head tilt to the boiler room behind him.

They all walked in and Raph put Donnie down for a moment to pull at the grate in the corner. A musty smell came from beneath.

Leo wandered over to help him pull, Raph hadn’t realized how much his hands were shaking.

Together they managed to lift it and push it up against the wall. Leo hopped down, Raph heard a splash as he hit water but it wasn’t too loud over the hum of the boiler.

Raph grabbed Donnie and carefully lowered him into Leo’s waiting arms. He then chucked the bags down.

He looked at Mikey, who was taking all of this like a champ. Realizing the drop was too much for 3'5 Mikey, he lay on his stomach and held out his arm to to him, who grabbed it and allowed himself to be lowered into the hole. He heard a plop as he landed and then Raph did a once over. They’d grabbed everything, it would probably be about 5 minutes before father was tearing the place apart looking for them.

He grabbed the grate as he sat on the edge of the tunnel down, needing to leave this place looking as undisturbed as possible.

He took a deep breath, and climbed down, holding the side as he lowered the grate back into its original position, and then sliding down the wall to meet his brothers in the water with a splash.

They all looked at him with nervous eyes. Now what?

Leo had Donnie on his back, who motioned with his hand to ask if now they could speak again.

Raph looked up, then around. Then held up his hand in a “wait.”

This was where his mother said to go. He only saw one way forward so he scooped up all the bags and started walking. Mikey followed, holding on to his arm so as to not lose him. Leo waded after, Donnie comfortable on his back.

They walked about 5 minutes through the one way tunnel before Leo decided to break the silence.

“What the hell happened?”

Raph felt all the eyes on him and turned.

“Dad was about to… start over.” He answered carefully.

“What does that mean?” Donnie asked.

Raph gulped. He didn’t know what to say. How to say it. He barely understood it himself.

“He told me we failed his tests. He wanted to start over with new turtles but he was… gonna need to use us to do that.”

“Like Frankenstein style?” Mikey asked, tugging on his arm.

Raph let out a half-hearted laugh. It didn't not sound correct. He could work with that. “Yeah. Something like that."

Donnie looked queasy. Leo looked suspicious. Raph just hoped he wouldn't ask more about it.

“It makes sense, but ugh…” Donnie mumbled against Leo’s neck.

“How did you know where to go?” Leo walked beside him, staring at him funny.

“Someone’s supposed to meet us here.”

“Who?”

Raphs mouth twitched.

“You’ll see, but please be nice. She’s… fragile. About her looks.”

They walked for about 3 more minutes before entering a crossroads. In the center of which was the form of a small round creature, wearing a dirty robe.

Raph stopped. His brothers stopped behind him.

His mother was standing in front of him within arms reach, she was much smaller than he thought, with tired eyes and long greying hair.

She saw them approach and she clasped her little rat paws over her mouth, eyes wide. She was about to cry.

Raph instantly ran up to her and fell to his knees, wrapping his arms around her tightly. He felt paws on his head and back, she kissed the top of his head and laughed.

“Did you really get them all out you beautiful brave boy?” She gripped his chin with her paws and made him look up. She had the saddest eyes but warmest smile. She was so beautiful.

“I-I did…”

She looked over at them, holding her arms out.

Mikey just stared in confusion. Leo looked like a slow realization was dawning on him. Donnie could only stare from Leo’s back.

“Is… are you… mom..?” Leo stepped forward. Donnie had slid down off his back and was finally ankle deep in the water with the rest of them.

She nodded and let out a sad laugh.

“Yes, I know I look… like this. And I know it’s been so long, but I hope—“

Leo was at Raph's side in an instant, hugging her equally as tight.

“I-I thought you were dead!” He cried between the sobs into her shoulder.

Mikey tugged on Donnie’s arm.

“We have a mom?” He asked.

“I don’t remember…” said Donnie.

Leo and Raph just kept hugging her.

“Ugh, I’m sorry boys we can continue this soon.” She placed a kiss on each of their heads and then very gently pushed them back.

“We’re okay here for the moment, but it would be best if we move out. I have a place where your father won’t find us. We can talk there.”

Raph and Leo both rubbed their eyes and put their brave faces back on. It came relatively easier than it should have.

Leo went to pick Donnie up again. The rat noticed this.

“What’s wrong with Donatello?” She asked, concerned.

Donnie gave her a look and then tucked his head into Leo’s neck shyly.

“Nothing, he just ends up in a lot of pain if he strains himself too much.” Raph answered for him as he scooped their bags up again.

“Oh… I’m very sorry, Donatello. Perhaps we can look into helping you with that?”

She gave the back of his shell a gentle pet.

The family began trudging through the water following her. Mikey was walking near her and watching her curiously.

“Are you really our mom?”

She gave him a sad smile and nodded.

“I know you might not remember, you were very young…”

He shrugged. “How are you our mom? You’re not a turtle.”

“Mikey, Dad's not a turtle either.” Leo rolled his eyes.

“Yeah but I always thought that’s why we were half human. So we had a turtle mom and a human dad.”

"Your sample wouldn’t work, you’d need another of the same species to get a purebred."

"I have three more."

Raph turned his head quickly to check behind him, stopping a moment.

The horrible concept of what he was escaping was dawning on him. He’d wanted to use his brothers as….

“Raph?”

Leo pulled him out of his thoughts.

He looked back at his brother, he saw the rest of his family beside him.

“Huh?”

“You’re spacing out.” Donnie noted.

Raph shook his head and continued after them. Leo slowing to keep pace with him.

“How long did you know mom was alive without saying anything?”

He frowned.

“Just a few days. She… was in the vents in the kitchen when I was getting snacks for Mikey the other night. You know, after dad made him skip dinner." He was avoiding Leo's gaze.

“How can the two of you be so sure she’s your mother?” Donnie questioned. He sounded skeptical.

“Just a note Don, she’s got really good hearing.” Raph bumped Donnie’s back with one of the, now damp, pillow cases full of all their earthly possessions.

He didn’t care for that and grumbled into Leo’s neck.

Leo adjusted his weight on his back with a huff.

“But you didn’t tell me.”

“We weren’t talking.” Raph stared dead ahead, watching her be quizzed by Mikey. They hadn’t been on speaking terms, Raph had been furious with having his place taken, and Leo angry he was forced to. They blamed each other.

“But THIS? This is something you say!”

“You wanted me to tell you out of the blue mom was alive and a rat now? That she was waiting for me in the walls? Would you have believed me?”

“I guess not, but still…”

“She was trying to tell me to leave, that it wasn’t safe.”

He sensed Leo’s eyes on him again but he just stared at his mom, getting lost in thought.

“What took so long on that front then? Was it not enough when dad locked me on the roof two days ago?”

Raph just stared at the swishing rat tail rippling through the water.

Leo waited for an answer, he didn't get one.

“Ugh. Figures. Did you even know about that?”

He did know. Leo’s lack of discipline was getting him in trouble in training, when he went to look to Raph for help he’d been slapped by their father. He then lashed out in anger, and the entire thing caused a meltdown that literally had him chucked up to the roof and locked out for hours. What Leo wasn’t aware of was that they could all hear him scream.

“He was gonna do something worse.” Raph mumbled. He didn’t want to tell him.

“The hell could be— ow!” Donnie had bitten his shoulder.

“I’m tired of fighting.” He said. “Just shut up.”

They walked in silence for a bit before Mikey pulled back to where Raph was and held his arms out.

“I’m tired.” He clasped his hands open and closed to ask for a ride.

Raphs arms were full but he leaned down anyway. Mikey clambered onto his back and held on to him around his neck. It wasn’t very comfortable, but he could hardly complain. Donnie was way heavier.

“Raph!” Mikey whisper shouted in his ear.

“Yeah?” He whispered back.

“I don’t think this rat is our mom.”

“Oh yeah why’s that?”

“She does not know the names of all my stuffed animals.”

He snorted.

“Mikey you got half of those while she was gone.”

“It’s very suspicious!”

“You’ll have to introduce me to them all, I’m sure I can learn.” She called out from the front without looking back.

Mikey and Donnie exchanged a look.

She did have good ears.

After trudging through the water for what felt like hours they came upon a tunnel with no water. It was about ten feet wide, and there was dim emergency lights along the ceiling. There was a strange vehicle parked in the middle.

The vehicle was an old truck, muddy with a faded white paint job and a logo on the side, but the dirt and grime made it hard to read.

Then a human got out of the front seat.

They were large, wearing a reflective yellow jumpsuit and had bright red hair.

The turtles stopped in their tracks. They didn’t know what to make of humans.

“Splinter!” They called out. “Oh my god is that them?!”

The rat wandered up to the human and the two clasped hands together.

They all exchanged a look.

“Yes, these are my sons! They came!”

The human gave them one of the warmest smiles Raph had ever seen and kneeled down to try and be less threatening.

“I’m April. Your mom's told me a lot about you, I’m here to help get you somewhere safe.” She gave the truck door a pat with her gloved hand.

None of the turtles moved. Humans were dangerous, they were supposed to hunt them. That’s what they’d been taught.

But she seemed so welcoming….

Mikey hopped off Raphs back and walked up to her, holding out his hand.

“Hi! I’m Mikey!” She took his hand and shook it dramatically.

“Nice to meet you Mikey! Whoa you’re really strong!” She acted as if her hand was stuck in a painful grip, Raph could see the tactic.

Mikey laughed and let go. “Do humans usually have hair like that? I’ve never seen that colour!”

She laughed and rubbed her hand over her head.

“No, I’m just very special.” She was open to being pestered by Mikey, that was warming them up to her. No one but them ever enjoyed being pestered by Mikey.

“Do we trust this….?” Leo asked softly.

“Nardo, do you trust this less than turning around and going home?” Donnie kicked him softly in the stomach for good measure.

“Oof, good point…”

They wandered over and April stood to her full height, she was much taller than them, but she didn’t feel threatening.

“Oh here, let me help you with those!” She took all of the sad pillow cases and gently placed them in the bed of the truck.

She then opened the front door and pulled the seat back to open up to the back row.

“Here, you boys look tired. I’ve got some snacks back there for you too.”

They all went bug eyed and clambered into the back of the van. It was warm and cozy, there was a faint oily smell but there was also water bottles, chips and granola bars stacked in the cup holders and down the pockets of the back of the front seats.

And they couldn’t help themselves but dig in.

They weren’t allowed to snack, that was a big rule. It’s why Raph had a secret stash. This was an adult letting them gorge themselves on food.

Raph peered out the window and saw April give his mom a hug before she turned back to the truck and pulled the front seat back to sitting position. Their mom climbed in the passenger seat and April got in after.

“Ok everybody, buckle up, we got a long drive.”

Raph and Leo were at either window, Mikey and Donnie between them.

Raph helped Mikey put his seat belt on first. He was covered in wrappers right now, looking very pleased with himself.

“What kind of car is this?” Donnie asked suddenly. "I've never seen one like this."

“Ah, just standard issue Ford for all us city maintenance workers. She’s not special but she gets the job done.” April answered as she started the car. “Do you guys like music?”

They all looked at her funny. She winced a little as she looked at them in the rear view mirror.

“Oof, okay I’m gonna put on some Queen. Tell me if you hate it.”

The rumble of the truck as it started moving was so calming. Raph leaned against the window, looking out into the darkness. There was a soft sounding beat playing on the radio that seemed to line up with the gravelly bumps they were hitting.

“Here boys.”

Their mom was hanging over the front seat to pass them blankets. Raph took them and passed them out. He wrapped Mikey up and draped his over the back of his shoulders. Mikey took it upon himself to unwrap himself and share the front part of his over Raph's lap and cuddle up against him. It was better than leaning on Donnie.

“How come April called you Splinter? Is that your name?” Mikey asked her.

April laughed.

Splinter shook her head and smiled.

“No, it’s a nickname. April found me wandering these tunnels years ago. She was looking for some scary creature she had called “the splinter” and decided that was me. She is very silly like that." She playfully slapped April's arm.

“Listen you were the creature I was looking for. I just didn’t know you could talk!”

“Can I call you Splinter?” Mikey asked.

She groaned dramatically. “See what you’ve done this will never stop now!” She joked and then turned back to Mikey. “You can call me Splinter if you’d like.”

“Okay!”

Raph kept listening to the music. It was something “pressure.” He tried to parse out the lyrics but half of it sounded like nonsense. It was catchy though.

He didn’t think there had ever been a safer place to be then right here. For once he didn’t feel like he needed to watch over his brothers.

He felt the adrenaline finally drain from him completely, no longer buzzy and panicked, no longer scared of being caught, dragged back into that lab and used by his father and Stockman. There was actual adults present for once, safe ones. Ones who could take care of them instead for a change. He felt safe.

And then let himself fall asleep.
