what is poco class in c#
Understanding POCO Class, Dependency Injection, and Repository Design Pattern in C#
Posted on Csharpmaster.com
In the world of C#, designing scalable, maintainable, and efficient applications is paramount. One of the most important aspects of creating well-structured software is the ability to manage data access, control dependencies, and model domain objects in a way that is flexible and clean. In this article, we will delve into key concepts such as POCO class, dependency injection in .NET Core, and the repository design pattern in C#, explaining their relevance and how they help in creating a robust software architecture.
What is a POCO Class in C#?
The term POCO stands for Plain Old CLR Object. It refers to a class in C# that is designed without any dependency on a framework or external infrastructure. A POCO class is typically simple, focusing purely on representing data, without being tied to any complex inheritance structures or specific technology stacks like Entity Framework or other ORM systems.
Key Characteristics of POCO Classes:
No Framework Dependencies: POCOs do not rely on any framework-specific features such as data annotations or base classes from a specific ORM (Object-Relational Mapping) system.
Focused on Domain Logic: POCOs are often used to represent domain entities, storing and manipulating data without being coupled to the underlying storage mechanism.
Lightweight: These classes tend to be simple and contain only properties and methods that are directly related to the data or behavior they represent.
For example, here is a basic POCO class in C#:
In this example, the Product class is a POCO. It contains basic properties to represent a product and has no ties to any external library or framework.
Why Use POCO Classes in C#?
Separation of Concerns: POCOs help in keeping your domain model independent of frameworks. This means that your business logic is not tied to any external library, making it easier to test and maintain.
Flexibility: Because POCOs are not bound to a particular technology, they can be easily migrated between different data storage solutions or frameworks.
Simplified Testing: POCO classes are easier to mock in unit tests since they are not tightly coupled to external dependencies.
Dependency Injection in .NET Core
Dependency Injection (DI) is a design pattern used to implement IoC (Inversion of Control), allowing for more modular and testable code. In .NET Core, dependency injection is built-in, making it a first-class citizen in the framework.
What is Dependency Injection?
In simple terms, Dependency Injection is a way to provide an object’s dependencies from the outside, rather than hardcoding them inside the object. This makes your code more flexible and easier to maintain. Instead of an object creating instances of the services it depends on, these services are provided to the object, typically through the constructor or via properties.
Why Use Dependency Injection in .NET Core?
Loose Coupling: With DI, the classes don’t need to know about the concrete implementation of their dependencies. They only depend on abstractions (interfaces), leading to more loosely coupled code.
Easier Testing: Since dependencies are injected, it becomes much easier to substitute real dependencies with mocks or stubs during unit testing.
Centralized Configuration: In .NET Core, you can configure all your dependencies in the Startup.cs or Program.cs file, making it easy to manage the application's services.
Example of Dependency Injection in .NET Core
Here’s an example of how dependency injection works in a simple .NET Core application:
Define an Interface:
Implement the I
By using DI, you decouple the ProductController from the ProductService, making the application more flexible and easier to maintain.
Repository Design Pattern in C#
The Repository Design Pattern is a structural pattern used to encapsulate the logic for accessing data from a data source. This pattern abstracts the data layer, making it easier to manage and maintain.
What is the Repository Pattern?
The repository pattern provides a way to encapsulate the logic required to access data sources, typically databases or external services, in a way that separates concerns. It acts as a middle layer between the data access logic and the business logic. The repository pattern is commonly used to interact with POCO classes and provide methods for fetching, saving, updating, and deleting entities.
Why Use the Repository Pattern?
Separation of Concerns: The repository separates the data access code from business logic, making the application easier to manage.
Simplifies Data Access: By using a repository, you can encapsulate all the data access logic into a single place, reducing duplication.
Increased Testability: The repository pattern makes it easier to mock the data layer in unit tests.
Example of Repository Pattern in C#
Here’s how you can implement a simple repository pattern with POCO classes and Dependency Injection in a .NET Core application:

The Product of Experience
The other night I went out with my friends to dinner; nothing special, nothing extravagant, just an old ale house and some great company. As I’m sipping on my drink during our conversation I hear my friend say,”...no because its the experience,” and I began to think to myself - what is the the experience? Is it different from the product or is it the same thing?
We’ve mentioned this before in class, raising questions about what is a product, what is the experience associated with the product, and the experience AS the product. Do we purchase these separately? Is the experience part of the product? Is it in person? Virtual? Is it something that needs to be or should be shared?
When I think of these questions and possibilities I think of the time I spent working in Disney World. In 2019 I worked as a front desk/concierge cast member at the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. Disney is company that prides itself on the product of experience. Disney was a person who created a place because he wanted to give his guests the experience of fantasy through story. Once Disney passed, his story became a legacy. That legacy now tells a story. Actually it tells THE stories, the stories that have entertained us through the generations. Think about it...Disney has been producing some of our favorite tales over time. The ones that my parents grew up with, that have gained an immense amount of popularity and relevance in culture - and now, people want to be a part of them. They want to be immersed in them.
Disney capitalizes on this concept of story telling when they use it in their marketing strategies. Even in their advertisements they often use a pathos appeal to establish feelings of childhood nostalgia, a feeling that can only really be felt or created through experience. A product that cannot be purchased unless a person is involved. Disney has other products that are not based around having a particular experience but for visiting the parks at least I think it’s safe to say that you need to physically be there in order to have the best experience. I recall even in passing through the parks hearing kids complain to their parents asking why do they have to do something, and the parents reply with, “because, its for the experience.”
Writing about this makes me raise a lot of questions - is the experience something that triggers an emotional response? What design strategies are incorporated in creating a product that provides such? Is the story essentially a product? Do companies incorporate story telling in designing and brand strategizing? If not, will they? What do we do now that we are moving into a digital world? How do companies who could lose relevancy in the physical world maintain their presence? Is our idea of a product changing?
Now I won’t be answering all these questions now, maybe a few. I will think on them and maybe answer at a later time.
If you’re wondering why the analysis of Disney it’s because as I hear people say, “it’s the experience,” I begin to wonder what that product of experience is exactly - if experience even is a product. How is that different from an tangible product, and how is the growth of the virtual/cyber world influencing that?
Beauty? Food? Fashion? Even medicine make me wonder where the line is drawn between product and experience. Let’s think about a hospital for example.. Their product is service - a person needs to physically be there to receive said product, and usually that product of service provides the patient with an experience. In Disney’s case I would consider their product to be entertainment (maybe? Im not sure if its this or if its considered a service and that service is entertainment??) and being entertained in the parks with rides, parades, characters and spectaculars definitely provides guests with an experience. Disney aims to provide a positive experiences for their guests, but I can speak from experience that there were guests who did not have a positive experience. I was the person they came to speak to about their experience and they frequently asked me questions about how their experienced could be improved. Would the product have to be altered to provide the consumer with a better experience? Maybe, but that all depends on the success rate of that product.
Now this leads me to another thought...What if I’m asking the wrong question, what if its not “the product of experience,” but instead “what is the experience associated with the product,” and, “why are we buying this - for the experience or the product, or both?” I mean part of the experience sometimes is being able to post about it on social media - are we paying to do that too? Though sometimes we forget that service is a product - at least I do.
If I break down these ideas I’ll end up with two main points: experience of a product, service vs item, and the question: are we marketing to consumers the product, or the experience associated with the product (item or service?)
In the case of Starbucks - I worked there for six years - I would argue that all of those points I mentioned are important. Both the service and the item are important in creating a positive experience for customers because the experience of both matters. We marketed the products (service & item) to customers with assurance that their experiences would be positive, and people would come back because they liked our product and service. They liked the experience associated with the product, but is that good service just part of the experience, or is it actually the product? Is it the friendly conversation and comfortable environment that is part of the service and experience instead?
Before I lose myself in the what if’s I am going to focus on these three main points. Experience of a product, service vs item, and what is essentially being marketed to the public.
I think we can say confidently that the experience of the product is dependent on the product itself. If the product (item or service) is good then the experience will be pleasant and it can be marketed as a good product, or a product that provides a good experience, or a good experience that you can only have if you purchase the product.
I still feel like I’m trying to answer the wrong questions, but I feel with the more questions I raise my ideas become a bit more focused - either way I’ll keep all this in mind throughout the course and when I am buying products...though most of my shopping is online and now I’m become increasingly curious about the virtual shopping experience...maybe in my next post!
