after 10 years & 6 jobs in corporate america, i would like to share how to game the system. we all want the biggest payoff for the least amount of work, right?

know thine enemy: beating the robots

i see a lot of misinformation about how AI is used to scrape resumes. i can't speak for every company but most corporations use what is called applicant tracking software (ATS).

no respectable company is using chatgpt to sort applications. i don't know how you'd even write the prompt to get a consumer-facing product to do this. i guarantee that target, walmart, bank of america, whatever, they are all using B2B SaaS enterprise solutions. there is not one hiring manager plinking away at at a large language model.

ATS scans your resume in comparison to the job posting, parses which resumes contain key words, and presents the recruiter and/or hiring manager with resumes with a high "score." the goal of writing your resume is to get your "score" as high as possible.

but tumblr user lightyaoigami, how do i beat the robots?

great question, y/n. you will want to seek out an ATS resume checker. i have personally found success with jobscan, which is not free, but works extremely well. there is a free trial period, and other ATS scanners are in fact free. some of these tools are so sophisticated that they can actually help build your resume from scratch with your input. i wrote my own resume and used jobscan to compare it to the applications i was finishing.

do not use chatgpt to write your resume or cover letter. it is painfully obvious. here is a tutorial on how to use jobscan. for the zillionth time i do not work for jobscan nor am i a #jobscanpartner i am just a person who used this tool to land a job at a challenging time.

the resume checkers will tell you what words and/or phrases you need to shoehorn into your bullet points - i.e., if you are applying for a job that requires you to be a strong collaborator, the resume checker might suggest you include the phrase "cross-functional teams." you can easily re-word your bullets to include this with a little noodling.

don't i need a cover letter?

it depends on the job. after you have about 5 years of experience, i would say that they are largely unnecessary. while i was laid off, i applied to about 100 jobs in a three-month period (#blessed to have been hired quickly). i did not submit a cover letter for any of them, and i had a solid rate of phone screens/interviews after submission despite not having a cover letter. if you are absolutely required to write one, do not have chatgpt do it for you. use a guide from a human being who knows what they are talking about, like ask a manager or betterup.

but i don't even know where to start!

i know it's hard, but you have to have a bit of entrepreneurial spirit here. google duckduckgo is your friend. don't pull any bean soup what-about-me-isms. if you truly don't know where to start, look for an ATS-optimized resume template.

a word about neurodivergence and job applications

i, like many of you, am autistic. i am intimately familiar with how painful it is to expend limited energy on this demoralizing task only to have your "reward" be an equally, if not more so, demoralizing work experience. i don't have a lot of advice for this beyond craft your worksona like you're making a d&d character (or a fursona or a sim or an OC or whatever made up blorbo generator you personally enjoy).

and, remember, while a lot of office work is really uncomfortable and involves stuff like "talking in meetings" and "answering the phone," these things are not an inherent risk. discomfort is not tantamount to danger, and we all have to do uncomfortable things in order to thrive. there are a lot of ways to do this and there is no one-size-fits-all answer. not everyone can mask for extended periods, so be your own judge of what you can or can't do.

i like to think of work as a drag show where i perform this other personality in exchange for money. it is much easier to do this than to fight tooth and nail to be unmasked at work, which can be a risk to your livelihood and peace of mind. i don't think it's a good thing that we have to mask at work, but it's an important survival skill.

The Promise - Chapter Three

Chapter Three

At six pm, I was downstairs waiting with Sam at the table. Mom and Grandpa had decided on a leisurely dinner, spaghetti. I sighed as I looked around at the food on the table. Sam and Grandpa put a considerable helping of the carb-loaded meal onto their plate. Mom put a portion of spaghetti on her own plate.

I reached out to grab the serving spoon and put some spaghetti in the center of my plate. My stomach rumbled, desperate for some sustenance. However, as soon as I looked down at the noodles coated in a thick red sauce, my throat began to close. I picked up my glass of water, taking several large gulps.

It became pitifully obvious during dinner why I was so skeletal. I played with the food on my plate, cutting each piece of spaghetti into small pieces. Then, I trailed the spaghetti from one end of the plate to the other. I did put about five pieces of pasta into my mouth. It was a minuscule amount due to the size of the pasta by the time I had shredded the wheat product. After dinner, I scraped the shredded remains of dinner into the trash.

Sam turned on Grandpa's large stereo. Then he cranked up the volume while letting the greatest hits of the 80s play throughout the house. I winced as the sound was deafening. It was almost hard to hear oneself think. My Mom and I cleaned up everything after dinner, and then she told me to get ready.

I went up the stairs to find my best jeans. I paired that with a band t-shirt and an oversized sweater before grabbing my worn brown boots. I slipped those on and grabbed my messenger bag, which held my journal and Anna Karenina.

After I had brushed my teeth, I brushed my hair, leaving it down. It was long - reaching mid back at this point. Usually, I cut it to chin length by now, but this time, I wanted to try a new look. I grabbed my messenger bag and went down the stairs. I still had about thirty minutes before Mom wanted to leave for the Boardwalk.

I noticed that Grandpa was walking towards the stables. I set my bag down on the porch and followed him, quiet in my steps and voice. Grandpa didn't realize I was following behind him until he entered the feed/tack room. When he turned around to grab buckets, Grandpa jumped. He was startled at my presence.

"Quiet one, eh?" Grandpa shook his head, trying to get his heart rate under control. Used to being the hunter, not the hunted. "I need to brush them all down. Do you want to help?

Wordlessly, I reached out a thin hand for the grooming bucket Grandpa offered. He led me to the three stalls where the horses were kept overnight. Grandpa explained the different tools and patiently taught me how to brush the horse's coat.

As I brushed the horses free of all dirt, I relaxed around the massive creatures. I became more confident in my strokes and less hesitant to brush the beautiful and majestic animals. As I relaxed, I no longer shied away from their actions. One of the grey horses nuzzled my neck with their velvety feeling muzzle. It made me giggle. When we finished brushing all three horses until their coats shone, Grandpa and I put the tools away.

"If you'd like, I can teach you how to ride a horse," Grandpa offered as we walked out of the stables and into the cooler evening air.

"Yes," I replied to my grandfather. He heard my voice for the first time that day. Grandpa gave me a smile and went to say something else, but my Mom interrupted us.

"Time to go!" Mom smiled, seeing that I was already outside. I waved goodbye to Grandpa and grabbed my messenger bag. I slid into the front seat since Sam was still dilly-dallying inside the house. Sam was upset when he had to sit in the backseat.

Mom tried to make light conversation as we drove to the Boardwalk. Sam was practically buzzing out of his skin with excitement. He wanted to see the Boardwalk at night. I was more apprehensive, but this weird feeling was deep in my gut.

I couldn't begin to explain it, but it felt like I was being pulled towards the Boardwalk for some reason. When Mom drove past it, it sounded louder than earlier in the day when we had seen it for the first time this summer. Mom parked the car.

"I want you both to have a good time," Mom addressed both of her kids. "Here's some money. I know being with your Mom on the Boardwalk is not cool. If you need a ride home, I'm leaving by 10 pm. Otherwise, be home at 1 am, Aria. Sam, your curfew is 10 - so be here, okay?"

"That's not fair!" Sam protested, accepting the money Mom gave us. He whined and complained at the heels of Mom while we walked towards the foreboding sign titled Boardwalk in neon lights.

I stopped for a second underneath the welcoming sign. I looked around at the people entering and exiting the Boardwalk. They were the same type of colorful people that I had observed earlier in the day. All walks of life, shape, size, and gender. Seeing so much happening in such a short period made my eyes hurt.

My brother noticed I wasn’t following him, so he doubled back. When I entered the Boardwalk, my ears were assaulted with the loud sounds of Carnival music, kids screaming in delight, overlapping radio music, people fighting, and just talking. It was a little overwhelming to the senses - eyes viewing the bright lights, nose adjusting to the smell of fat and calories rich in the air, ears deafened, mouth-filling with the taste of sea salt, and skin being bumped by the overcrowding happening.

“There’s a concert!” Sam shouted, pointing towards the beach where many people were gathered. I shook my head, telling my brother I wasn’t following him down there. There were too many people, and it was too loud, and I wanted to be left to my own devices. Sam shrugged, leaving me on the Boardwalk. I hugged my messenger bag, wrapping my arms around my torso.

I moved around the bodies on the Boardwalk, trying to find a quiet place. An unoccupied bench on the far end of the Boardwalk would be perfect. I spotted one open on the outskirts of the Boardwalk. I picked up my pace, weaving in and out of the crowd. Lost in my hurry to get to the bench, I didn’t notice the person in front of me until it was too late.

Tools you Do NOT need

I got more things I want to add to my list of recommendations of what to keep on hand as a kitchen witch. But I figured it may be more productive to share my opinion on things most Kitchen Witches don't need. Now, this will be my experience and based on what I've heard from others. And if you have anything listed and love it, don't get rid of it or stop using it! Just if you see some of this stuff on videos or advertised; maybe pass on them.

Silicone Spoon

Silicone is great for a lot of things, and I highly recommend you have a silicone spatula for scraping. But a Silicone spoon is so impractical. It tends to be a plastic form spoon covered in a layer of silicone, so it doesn't have the same flexibility as a silicone spatula when scraping edges. Silicone also tends to be soft, so it's not unusual for it to cut or tear. For a spatula that's fine, because it's a solid piece so it can still work fine with a few nicks. But for a spoon that has a layer of silicone, it means there's a change for moisture to get in-between the layer and cause it to start separating. Not to mention the fact Silicone will melt at high heat. So if you're mixing something that can get very very hot, like oil or sugar, your spoon may melt. Then there's just the fact nothing sticks properly. Which sounds great for cleaning, but can be a pain if you're trying to check if a sauce or custard is done. Stick with a wooden spoon and use a silicone spatula when you want to scrape.

Garlic Press

A controversial one for sure! You see these used all the time in cooking videos. But they are so impractical. All the garlic doesn't even go through the press, and you still need to sever the end from the press. Mincing garlic with a chef knife is far more effective. However, I know not everyone has the dexterity to mince garlic. So, some alternatives: Blend a big batch using a food processor, and freeze portions for later. There's a few videos on ways to do this, but my favourite way I've seen uses a ziplock bag and chopstick. Use a microplane grater. Just grate the gloves using a microplane and you'll easily get the fine pieces you are after. The neat thing is a Microplane can be used for a variety of foods, while a garlic press is limited to just...well garlic.

Egg Separator

These can be really cute and funny and sometimes make fun decore. But, realistically speaking, they don't work any better than just using your hands. Or if you hate touching egg, tipping the yolk back and forth between the cracked shells. Every single fancy egg separator I have seen is just as effective, and yolks have the same break rate (which is low) Save your money, save your space, don't get these. Oh and a quick note about eggs; don't get egg holders. Yeah they're cute, but for something that only has one purpose, they can take up a fair bit of space. Instead, try using standard shot glasses. It's what my parents had us use when we were kids.

Specialty Peelers/Cutters

I'm talking big, turn style apple peelers, pineapple peeler and corer, banana slicers; anything that's for one specific type or size of food. You really don't need it, and it takes up space. Just use your vegetable peeler and knife. If you have trouble cutting evenly, perhaps consider a mandolin. These allow you to slice a variety of foods thinly. Just take great care, as these are very sharp and it can be easy to slice off a finger tip if you are not using proper safety measures.

Turkey Baster

I have one of these in my kitchen drawer since moving in with my SO years ago. Neither of us have ever used it. A baster is used for 1 thing which can be substituted for a ladle or large spoon. Many people still see this as an essential for cooking meat though, so take this with a grain of salt. I'd also add roasting pan; since any time I make a roast now I grab my Crock Pot. But I'm aware a roasting Pan has it's uses for other people.

More Jars and Containers

This might seem weird cause I put glass jars down as a needed must for Kitchen Witchcraft. This is not a PSA for those of you who have just started your collection and have maybe 20 jars. This is to those of us who have accumulated over 200 with realistically only enough space for half that. Stop it. Maybe start giving some of your jars away that you've washed and reused from products. Same goes for plastic containers. I have a habit of saving my large yogurt containers, but they just started taking up too much space. Find a balance is all I'm saying.

I may make an ingredient list later; but that's far more subjective.

Yuh as one of those human reviewers (not for the docs writer LLM but for Google search quality, bias, and text summaries more generally), it's a terrible terrible privacy mess to base LLMs off of data which is not published on the web. Yes there are issues with web scraping to train bots as far as intellectual property, but that info is all public in one way or another. I can scrape the New York Times for restaurant reviews and ask an LLM to create a review for an imaginary Thai restaurant, but those reviews were at least meant for public viewing in the first place. It wouldn't be the end of the world if the synthetic review copied something verbatim like "chicken enlivened by lemongrass and ginger".

Because LLMs are being trained on all the data of all the users, there's no guarantee that whatever goes into the "black box" will not come out to another user given the right prompting. It's just a statistical process of generating the most likely string of associated words, connections between which are reweighted based on reviewer and user feedback. If in the training data a string of connected words is presented, like "come to the baby shower at 6pm for Mary Poppins at 123 Blueberry Lane, Smallville, USA, 90210", that exact address could at some point be regurgitated in whole to another user, whether the prompting was intentional or not.

The LLM doesn't "know" what data is sensitive. The LLM does not "protect" data from one user from being used by another. The LLM doesn't have the contextual awareness to know that some kinds of information could present more risk for harm, or that some words represent more identifiable data than others.

All of the data is being amalgamated into the LLM likely with only some very broad tools for grooming the data set, like perhaps removing the corpus of one user or removing input with a certain percentage of non-English characters, say, and likely things like street addresses, phone numbers, names, and emails which can be easily removed are already being redacted from the data sets. But if it's put into words, it's extremely likely to be picked up indiscriminately as part of the training set.

The Google text products for search I've worked on can be very literal to the training data, usually repeating sentences wholesale when making summaries. An email LLM could be giving you whole sentences that had been written by a person, or whole phrases, but still be "ai generated"- it just happens that the most likely order for those words is exactly as a human or humans had written before. Obviously that makes sense because people say the same things all the time and the LLMs are probability machines. But because the training sets of data are so massive, it's not being searched every time to see if the text is a verbatim match to something the LLM had been trained on, or running a sniff check for whether that information is specific to an individual person. This "quoting" is more likely for prompts where there are fewer data points that the LLM is trained on, so compared to say, "write an email asking to reschedule the meeting to 2pm" which has 20 million examples, if I prompted "write an origin story for my DND character, a kind halfling bard named Kiara who travels in a mercenary band. Include how she discovered a love of music and how she joined the mercenaries" or "generate a table of semiconductor contractors for XYZ corp, include turnaround times for prototypes, include batch yield, include Unit cost" , we're a lot more likely to see people's (unpublished and private!) trade secrets being quoted. The corporations are going to have a fit, especially since they've been sold the Google Office suite for years.

At best, the data sets are being massaged by engineers using some complex filters to remove some information, and the bots are being put through sampling to see how often they return results which are directly quoted from text, and the reviewers are giving low ratings to responses which seem to quote very specific info out of nowhere. But if the bot changes just one word, or a few, while still rephrasing the information, it's impossible to check whether that information has a match in the training data without human review, and there's no guarantee another bot making the comparison like a plagiarism checker would catch it. Once the data is in the set, there are no guarantees.

The only way Google gets around these likelihoods of copyright infringement or privacy law is by having you the user waive your rights and agree as part of the terms of service not to include "sensitive" info.. so if you're somehow hurt by a leak of your info or creative ideas , it's because you used the service wrong. Might not stand up in court, but still be advised not to agree to this stuff.
