BACKGROUND.
born  the  second  eldest  out  of  four  to  two  loving  but  unfortunately  busy  parents  in  queens  .  rhiannon’s  parents  were  constantly  working  to  make  ends  meet  .  they  didn’t  come  from  money  but  somehow  always  managed  to  make  things  work  .  they  tried  to  shield  their  children  from  their  financial  troubles  .  and  truthfully  ,  her  parents  should’ve  stopped  at  two  kids  .  but  they  wanted  more  so  then  came  the  twins  .  with  their  parents  at  work  all  the  time  ,  ria  and  her  older  brother  had  to  step  up  and  take  care  of  their  youngest  siblings  whether  they  wanted  to  or  not  .  nights  were  spent  preparing  dinner  ,  lunch  for  school  and  helping  their  siblings  with  homework  .  the  eldest  hale  siblings  had  to  grow  up  a  lot  faster  than  the  rest  of  their  peers  .
she  discovers  her  love  for  art  when  she’s  around  ten  .  however  ,  knowing  that  her  parents  couldn’t  possibly  afford  to  pay  for  art  classes  ,  ria  decides  to  teach  herself  .  within  time  ,  she  gets  really  good  at  it  .  they  start  to  use  it  as  an  outlet  .  something  to  let  her  imagine  what  life  would  be  like  outside  the  metaphorical  walls  of  queens  .  it’s  not  that  she  felt  stuck  ,  she  just  knew  it  wouldn’t  do  her  any  good  if  she  spent  her  entire  life  in  queens  .  they  want  more  for  their  life  .
high  school  felt  like  a  challenging  time  for  ria  .  between  helping  their  brother  take  care  of  their  siblings  and  hunkering  down  on  school  ,  it  left  little  time  to  assemble  their  art  portfolio  .  while  met  with  initial  hesitance  from  her  family  ,  she  assembles  her  portfolio  and  starts  applying  to  schools  both  in  and  out  of  the  city  with  excellent  art  programs  .  she  knows  what  she  wants  .  as  soon  as  ria  graduates  from  high  school  ,  she’s  accepted  an  offer  to  attend  parsons  with  a  grant  from  the  school  and  multiple  scholarships  .  still  close  enough  to  home  as  a  compromise  but  at  least  she’s  out  of  queens  .

something something dctv dinah (i rewrote it so that i would like it better thanks!!):
born in gotham city, new jersey, dinah grew up in a tiny two bedroom apartment under the eye of her single mother, dinah drake senior. by day, dinah senior worked in a floral shop, and by night, she was a crimefighter working unofficially alongside the gcpd. drake was murdered by brian durlin/savant when dinah was nine years old, resulting in dinah being tossed around different foster homes, relatives' houses, and abusive situations for about two years before she landed under the care of quentin lance, the father who didn't know she existed until shortly after dinah senior's death.
traumatized and exhausted, dinah took a long while to open up, and had a tendency to avoid causing trouble as a means of making sure she was always good enough to be loved. something something, dinah is who she is, laurel is more of the person she makes herself into. the only times she ever really loosened up were in her close friendships she made in school, and under the tutelage of ted grant, a close friend of dinah senior's. years prior to dinah's birth, ted had moved to starling to be closer to his own children and open up a gym; the gym would prove to be a safe place for dinah to express her anger/hurt/innermost shit feelings and learn how to defend herself effectively.
something something, oliver and sara die on the gambit, something something law school, something something occasionally street fighting people. something something, dinah getting fired from her job at the da's office leads to a temporary singing gig in a seedy club where she gets another up close and personal view into how working for the law doesn't always mean that the right people get punished. something something rise of the black canary coming from sara's re-death, dinah senior's death, everything she's ever learned at ted's gym, who she is as a person etc etc etc--
points that matter to me personally are as follows:
the struggle in becoming black canary comes not from a lack of skill (she's always been able to handle herself in a fight), but from a lack of experience in applying said skill to a completely uncontrolled environment. everyone she's ever thrown hands with has always been a) in a gym, or b) drunk frat boys and would-be muggers. at no point does she need to be taught how to throw a proper punch, but there is still a learning curve in terms of transferring what she knows to a vigilante-type environment, where people carry guns and bows, and things she generally hasn't needed to factor prior to picking up the mask.
she's not a shorts and fishnets girlie, so she adopts the injustice suit. she also tends to prefer her own two fists over the baton, but does carry it along with a sidearm because she recognizes going out night after night will wear down on her hands after a while.
the canary cry is inherited from dinah senior, but was dormant at the time of d's birth, leading dinah senior and her vigilante friends to believe that dinah just hadn't inherited it. it's activated...at some point in season 3 (like idk whenever she gets dosed with the vertigo) as a result of severe distress. she manages to keep it under wraps for a while, and only reveals it to the besties over in central city when she's worried it's about to start getting out of control.
regardless of whether or not she's working in the da's office, or at cnri, or as a florist/club singer/whatever, dinah maintains her bar membership. she likes to use it to take on pro bono cases from time to time, and it tends to be helpful when her friends get into legal trouble.
girlie does "die" in s4, but nothing is permanent (argus or what have u idk). she winds up healing and then training in a loa-type environment for a year in vietnam, before getting a bead on brian durlin being in gotham city and heading there to kill him (she actually puts him in prison, but u kno)

Thank you for WestAllen
I thank Flash everyday for not giving Iris a sister and for not making Barry a man whore and I ask thank them for not killing off their lead lady. Unlike a certain show with a blond vigilante who does Archery and kills people. Hell Yeah we all know I am throwing shade

I’m the last one.
There are really only three ships for the arrow fandom:
Olicity Lauriver And “I ship Laurel with anyone but Oliver because he doesn’t deserve such a dime catch like Dinah Laurel Lance so yeah just as long as she’s alive and on my screen…”

The Wait & See Approach
Does anyone know what’s up with television writers/showrunners nowadays just taking the “wait and see” approach when it comes to their shows? Like I’m generally curious what’s with this new trend of supposedly just letting the story go where it goes. The first time I ever witnessed this was on Gossip Girl when it finally came to revealing who Gossip Girl actually was (Spoiler Alert!!!) Dan. The reason I noticed it was because I had binged the entire show right before the final season premiered so nearly everything about the series was still right there in my mind as I watch the episodes leading up to the series finale. When they finally revealed that Dan was Gossip Girl, all I could think was that it didn’t make any sense. There were multiple moments throughout the series who Dan would have been incapable of learning the information Gossip Girl did and if he was, then you get into the creepy way he put his sister’s sexual exploits on blast and had a hand in driving her out of town, even if it was apparently for her benefit. I just don’t understand how you can build an entire show around a shadowy character who constantly exposes the secrets and exploits of other characters but not have some semblance of an idea who it is. Any good writer would plot something like that out and leave hints only the most committed and dedicated audience members would pick up on. Instead, the showrunners waited till the last season to figure out who Gossip Girl was and probably threw a dart at a board or spun a wheel of character names to decide. *** I’m going to bold different sections for each show I talk about.
Pretty Little Liars
You run into the same isssue with Pretty Little Liars which definitely has the same format as Gossip Girl except more sinister. The villain of the series is a shadowy character known as A who, during the sixth season was revealed as (spoiler alert!!!!!!) Cece Drake. The issue with this reveal is throughout the series Cece was known as an acquaintance of Allison Dilaurentis and dated her older brother, Jason Dilaurentis. She apparently went to school with Jason, was prom queen, was known by/friends with multiple characters around the same age bracket. There was alot of history that went into developing Cece as a nonthreatening “frenemy” of the main girls but not the person who was terrorizing them. However, the season six reveal changed all that and revealed that Cece was apparently born Charles Dilaurentis (as in the twin of Jason, the person she dated but was justified in show since they never had sex). Other things like timelines, questionable motivation, flashback scenes in previous seasons, and previous confessions by the character in question also add up to the writers not having any actual idea who really was and chose an arbitary character who was convenient and brownie points (by making her a transwoman).
Arrow
Now with Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars, those examples could be seen as coincidence given the years separating the two tv series and the trend of only deciding who the villain is during the final seasons but I've seen examples of the wait and see approach in numerous other shows as well. In the tv show Arrow, the fourth season’s premier episode literally ended with a flash forward of someone’s (a major cast member’s) funeral. The showrunners said multiple times this death would change the show going forward and affect all the characters. I mean, with a main cast members death who had been on the show for seasons you would assume as much. However, when the character’s death episode finally aired (despite the death being leaked a few weeks prior) the writer’s revealed that when they introduced the plot of killing of a major character they had no idea who it would be. They decided to just let the story decide who they would kill off. I’m sorry but as a writer I feel there are certain things you absolutely have to plot out and one of those things are a character’s progression. Death is not the only tool to get a story going and nowadays it just seems like a cheap ploy for the shock factor in most television shows. Especially since this death was for Spoilers!!!! Laurel Lance, a mentally ill woman and former alcoholic who literally had no story all season besides reviving her sister from the dead (who had already “died” three times). I understand sometimes characters/people die suddenly and without rhyme or reason. It’s tragic, it’s unexpected, and it reminds you just how short life is. However, if you build an entire season around a mysterious death that is meant to happen six or seven months in the future, it’s no longer unexpected or sudden. If as a writer you decide I want to kill a character but don’t decide which character to kill until right before you’re slated to film an episode, maybe don’t introduce the plot to begin with. Audience members don’t like to be blindsided and walk away from something feeling nothing else but “what the fuck was that?” Then, after killing said character off don’t pretend she had such a tremendous legacy and impact that inspired people but you never showed it. That’s lip service and for anyone watching the shows, knows it’s bullshit. All it comes off as trying to justify why this character was murdered even though there’s no logical excuse. If this character was so inspiration and had such a great legacy, why was none of that shown in the show? And if she was so crucial and the show can’t be done without her, why kill her off?
How To Get Away With Murder
The same thing happened recently with How To Get Away With Murder. The premier episode of the season ended with a flash forward of the main/lead character pulling back the sheet of a dead body and subsequent episodes slowly revealed one by one who was still alive and wasn’t under the sheet. Eventually, it was revealed that Spoiler!!! Wes Gibbons, another main character/secondary lead was actually the body. The issue with this reveal was not only that they didn’t initially figure out who they were going to kill off (though they didn’t wait as long as the arrow showrunners did) but by killing off the character Wes, they had to cram in a bunch of bogus flashbacks to make it believable other main cast members really did feel distraught by his death. Two of the characters, Connor and Michaela, had spent 2.5 seasons insulting, belittling, blaming, demeaning, and in Connor’s case, threatening Wes for things out of his control but the episode following the reveal of his death they had both apparently shared touching moments with her and were upset by the fact that he was dead. Then of course his five second love interest was given a flashback to try and make it seem like their relationship had more depth/growth than it actually did before the showrunner killed him off. The whole thing came off as if they were trying to justify murdering this character under the guise of him reaching the end of his arc but if that were true why the crammed in flashbacks trying to make it seem like the other characters had some profound and touching connection with him when previous to the episode, most of them didn’t speak more than a couple sentences to him. Why try to make the Wes/Laurel relationship so important and have Laurel be pregnant only to kill him off (this is a character who hasn’t known a moment of happiness since he watched his mother die when he was like 8 or so.) At the same token, this is a character whose very existence started the chain reaction for most of the events in the show and was directly linked to each midseason mystery for better or worse. Killing off a character so directly tied to the narrative who had also literally been given a new arc comes off premature and like the showrunner just wanted to join the hype train of killing characters just because (especially women, people of color, queer, any combination of the three). And apparently, the character of Wes will still appear sporadically for flashback sequences but that begs of the question of what can this character do dead that he couldn’t do alive? Why did he need to die to develop everyone else? So we could get unjustified remorse from Michaela and Connor? So the showrunners can pretend the character actually had no more story to tell by using bogus flashbacks?
I just don’t understand how these writers are put in charge of these (admittedly highly successful, formerly in arrow’s case) shows yet don’t know the basics of storytelling. You don’t introduce a plot without a reasonable beginning and ending, you don’t introduce a character unless they have an actual purpose, you don’t cram in a ton of information about a character after the fact to justify an obvious shock factor/ratings grab death even if it is the midseason or season finale. And the sad thing is, in the case of every single one of these “wait and see” plotlines, the shows have received a ton of backlash. So why exactly do writers insist of repeating the mistakes of those before them?

Fyi, in case anyone cares about my opinion (if you don’t that’s okay too) I will never get behind this ‘Black Siren redemption arc’ because people who want to be redeemed don’t keep going back and working with the villains.
Every single time a hero trusts her she proves she’s just a bad guy. So no I’m not going to start liking her because she looks like Laurel, or because she’s pretending to be Laurel (my personal feelings on that character aside). But I feel like if the evil, murderous doppelganger of my favorite character started tarnishing their name, and pretending to be them, I would feel so insulted.
She’s not Laurel Lance. She’s not the girl who went to law school when her father wouldn’t let become a cop. She’s not the one who struggled with alcoholism after loosing Tommy. And she sure as hell isn’t the daughter who held Quentin in her arms when he learned that Sara had died for the second time.
So stop rooting for her to take over that character’s entire life while she drags the memory of the real Laurel through the mud.

Katie and Stephen also were under the impression Lauriver would get back together but Olicity shippers literally got Laurel killed off.
I've been saying for years that the Lauriver reunion seemed to stop in the middle of nowhere and Oliver just fell for Felicity one day

I know this is old but I still harbor bitterness towards Sara mostly because of what you posted. Both Tina and Sara are both a nuisance to Laurel’s existence. I wouldn’t have had a problem with either of them if they weren’t written in away to tear down Laurel or replace her. I would have had some respect for Sara if she hadn’t gotten back with Oliver and didn’t rub it in Laurel’s face. Tina should have stayed as Tina and not Dinah Drake.
Unpop Onion: Sara was a better sister than Laurel.
strongly agree | agree | neutral | disagree | strongly disagree
Sara fucked Laurel’s boyfriend. Sara tried to blame Laurel for why she slept with Oliver. Sara came back and fucked Oliver again without even thinking about how it could affect Laurel and her relationship with Oliver in the present. Sara kept her identity as The Canary from Laurel and didn’t open up to Laurel about anything that happened. Sara didn’t really apologise to Laurel or try to understand that Laurel was reacting to SHITTY ACTIONS SARA DID TO LAUREL AND HAD REASONABLE REASONS TO BE WHAT PEOPLE WOULD CALL HER A BITCH OVER. Sara was brought back from the dead and was like “yo thank u fam but I’m out of here” and left Laurel. Sara didn’t risk everything to save Laurel when Laurel would tear apart heaven and earth just to bring Sara back (and she did). Sara fucked Laurel’s boyfriend. Like are you serious? I should have just stopped it there. I mean, I respect your opinion, but Sara is not even a good sister let alone a better one lmao

”Felicity is a manipulative, selfish, and abusive person. Attacking Oliver for not telling her about the kid he had that he just found out about the same day when they're in the middle of saving the fucking city and world? What the fuck. Despite that, Oliver had no obligation to tell Felicity anything. Felicity is not the kid's mom and the actual mom has no interest in Oliver and wants to be away from him. Thea was understanding about it. Laurel was understanding about it. Felicity? No no no whine whine whine. Attacking Oliver over this is disgusting. This is just another example of why Felicity is so tainted and I can't bring myself to like her.”
- From a fan
The worst part is that Felicity almost redeemed herself for admitting that she was wrong about the break up but then brought up the “Not that I was consulted” comment and ruined everything.

Laurel Lance, Oliver's ex, had a far better and more mature response to being told by Slade, Season 2's Big Bad on Arrow, Oliver's big secret than Lena, who never dated Kara, had to HER secret.
Laurel literally thought that running away with Oliver onto his boat, so he could cheat with her, was what killed her sister for 6 years. Everybody thought Sara was dead for that long (the first time). He cheated on her with multiple other women. Among other things she had legitimate reason to be pissed at him for.
And yet, when Slade told her Oliver was The Arrow... she didn't go to the police. She didn't call the press. She didn't set out this elaborate plan for revenge (Slade told her to enact his own plan for revenge). No. She did not.
She was a lawyer. She sought the truth. She was so dedicated to the truth she worked pro bono for a nonprofit. She did her homework and proved to herself that Slade was right. She then approached Oliver's partners, Felicity and Diggle, and they worked together to help Oliver. She JOINED THE FIGHT *against* the villain.
Unlike Lena, who did none of those things, and in some cases the opposite, even though as a scientist, she should have known better. She should have tested and weighed evidence and sought the root cause of why Kara kept that secret.
Or, you know, womaned up and actually talked to the supposed love of her life.
The writers did Laurel dirty, but at least she showed more emotional maturity than Lena Luthor. And this was AFTER achieving sobriety, a process that started after she realized she'd been blaming everyone else for her problems for a long time.
Basically, Laurel was much more hurt and betrayed by Oliver and still, she acted like a mature person, not a whiny psychopatic baby.
Not. Fucking. Telling. A. Fucking. Secret. And this two-faced bitch reacted with manipulating, lying, gaslighting and in the end torturing Kara. I don't know hom much fucked in the head some people need to be to claim she was JUST blinded by feelings and in a dark place.
People in dark place still can act like normal people. And even if they act horribly, like Lena, it's still THEIR choice to make.
No one manipulated Lena to do a shit. It was her decision to hurt Kara every way imaginable. She did it on her FREE will.
Sad facts.

˗ˏˋ    🔮 INFOS:
nome atual: dinah laurel lance
conhecida como: canário negro
idade: 37 anos
ocupação: advogada e florista
local: gotham city
poder: grito supersônico e maestria em artes marciais
faceclaim: deborah ann woll
˗ˏˋ    🔮 PROMPTS:

I actually fell in love with Laurel Lance BECAUSE of her flaws. I loved the fact that her problems were human and REAL. She was a broken child with an abusive father and a dismissive mother. Her boyfriend betrayed her and screwed her sister (Sara) while on a cruise togther resulting in their death . And the poor girl found out about it after it happened.
So she after she grieves and her family falls apart in front of her eyes she decides she wants to help people. WOW. Believe it, instead of wallowing in her own filth for five years, she deciddd to become a Lawyer, to give a voice to the voiceless.
Still she's reminded that her sister and her boyfriend are dead so she seeks comfort in her childhood friend Tommy. She starts developing feelings for him. Now she's not in a wholesome but she's in a better place than she was.
THAT is when her presumed dead boyfriend for five years shows up. How does she find this out? On the news where they report of her dead sister as well. Now I can go on and tell you how she held her own against 2 kidnappers, and was manipulated by her father into finding a vigilante. (The man let his own men hold multiple guns at his DAUGHTER, the only person who took care of him despite him being verbally abusive to her. )
Tommy breaks up with her and as you people say OOH SHE RUNS BACK TO OLIVER. Did you not read what happened above do you not know what she went through. Oh, I forgot she can't be vulnerable cause she's a girl. No, because she's LAUREL.
Yet, somehow everyone seems to forget the fact that after Felecity broke up with Ray she actually went on a plane with Oliver then drugged him post-sex trying to protrect his sister. Don't come at me with that she always runs to Oliver B. S. While literally every one of our faves ran to Oliver in a moment of weakness.
[Note: I respect Felecity, she's growing on me ,just not when she's with Oliver.]
But let us continue on how, after all of that she loved despite EVERYTHING. The man she decided to want to choose [Tommy] dies saving he from a crumbling building. Now all of you are going to be like wHy was ShE ThERe ANYWAYSSSS?
Deleted clip?
Laurel about to run our into a chaotic city to find her clients case files:
our clients are about to lose their homes , their lives etc . The least we can do is save their hope.
Hence the well-known quote: Dinah Laurel Lance always trying to save the world.
So she became a drunk, depressed and an addict. Like I said I'm not going to get into the details how she was kidnapped and almost turned into a doll, then was tricked by villains to believe she was crazy because she was the only person who knew the truth about the villians plan and they couldn't afford anyone knowing.
Nor am I going to get into the fact that when she was arrested for this (i think) her oh-so loving father doesent give a damn and leaves her. I want to continue but season 2 was so tiring (as well as inspiring) as a Laurel fan. You actually have to watch it in depth to understand.
Now her sister (*baby voice* my Sara, my love [yes, I love Sara despite this]) who was the Canary, another vigilante , dies in front of her. She holds her sister in her amrs as she dies. Then carried her sister to the arrow cave saying she has no place to go. She cries in Oliver arms. (her friend who she has now forgiven)
They couldn't even give her a fresh grave, and Laurel was angry. Hell, I would be too. My baby sister dies mysteriously after doing so much for the city and she can't even get a new grave to be buried in.
So she decides to go after Sara's killer, while being a recovering addict.
Think about that for a minute:
She is hunting her sister's murderer while not drinking, or popping a pill.
People, this is the person who is recovering from depression.
She doesent tell her father, yeah this was bad mistake on Laurel's part. She should've but I understand why she didnt. He just had a heart attack and diagnosed with a weak heart. Oliver leaves to duel to the death with one of the greatest assasins in the world. And again is presumed dead.
No one believes he is coming back, except for Laurel. So the team that has fought for him for two years say:
There is no saving the city without Oliver.
.... okay. To me that was out of charcwter, at least TOTALLY for John. But you know writers.
So you know what Dinah Laurel Lance, Always trying To save the World, decided to do. Take up her sister's mantle, even though she has basic fighting skills and save the city.
That's when I knew THIS was going to be the Black Canary. Not Dinah Lance but sure as he'll accurate description of her personality.
Everyone literally everyone who could breath told her no, your not your sister. How could you, your putting yourself in danger. YOU'RE NOT GOOD ENOUGH
But she persisted because she was determined and stubborn yet loving and kind. That's when it hit me, THIS this was my Dinah Laurel Lance. Seemed of justice and using her weaknesses to her best just so she can protect the innocent, no matter what skill level she is because she is always trying to save the world.
So after Oliver refused to train her (that always seemed OOC for me because Roy and Oliver knew and stated how stubborn Laurel is. So they knew she was going to do this.) She decided to seek training with an ex vigilante and a trained assasin.
Tbh, with all that and her self defense classes she's been taking all her life she should've been on par with Thea or ahead but no it's Laurel, so the writers must not really give a damn --
I'm off course.
She tells her father he cuts her off. Yet, she doesn't pop a pill, she keeps fighting and thats what she did and what she kept doing.
Until they killed her.
After she resurrected her sister, her fighting was finally on par with most of the team, and she was actually wholesome. They killed her.
They killed off a powerful woman, who was a symbol for people with mental health issues(such as myself)
They fridged her.
I loved the fact that she was not some brilliant hacker, or some military op, or an assasin who grew up. I lived the fact that she wanted to save the world before Sara, or Oliver. She was just human. Who had tons of flaws, who acted on them. She was relatable and at the same time not because instead of sitting on her hands she did something.
So yes, I fell in love with Katie Cassidy who lost a significant amount of body weight to perform her depression arc (you gremlins thought it was plastic surgery) who actually was not treated great by her real father. Who had alcohol abuse tear up her family, Who gets most of the hate from the arrow fandom because they can't separate fiction from reality. (It is confusing how she is both a fan favourite and the fandom Punching bag) and the only person in the arrow cast to win an award.
And I stand by Laurel who has gotten SO MANY people a voice and hope.
So yes she had flaws and embraced them and utilized them for the good of other people. Now that is truly a Black Canary

Laurel & Iris
These characters so beautiful so a like. They would be great friends yet how these little lovely ladies never had scenes to together? Here are a list of things they would talk about. Their cop dads, their struggles with having one addict for a parent, the struggles of being an older sibling, daughter, and girlfriend. Their careers even though they are different but think about it, Iris is a reporter Laurel is lawyer, Barry is a forensics scientist and Quinton and Joe are both cops, now that would make for a great team up. Laurel would have Iris be a part of Birds of Prey. Iris would be doing investigative reporting and publishing stories on bad guys saving many people’s lives. The team would have Laurel as a meta human, and still being a lawyer by day, it would have Barbara Gordon and Huntress and Sara if she were willing to help. WestAllen and Lauriver and would go on double dates. Then they would all have alerts and those three would save the world. Iris would be okay she has been training in self defense classes, and Laurel suggest she train along side with Ted, Nyssa and Oliver because as investigative reporter she puts herself in danger a lot and being the daughter of a cop having a few extra self defense classes are okay. She and Laurel also know how to shoot guns if they have to and Iris also carries a taser with her just in case. Her fighting skills are fairly decent.
