These Woodpeckers’ Bloody Wars Draw a Crowd
https://sciencespies.com/news/these-woodpeckers-bloody-wars-draw-a-crowd/
These Woodpeckers’ Bloody Wars Draw a Crowd
For woodpeckers, acorns can be a matter of life and death. Acorn woodpeckers, which inhabit oak woodlands from Oregon to Mexico, will wage war against rival groups for days in pursuit of the acorns they need to survive the winter.
“We’ve seen birds with eyes gouged out, wings broken, bloody feathers and birds that fell to the ground fighting each other,” Sahas Barve, an ornithologist at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, tells Priyanka Runwal of the New York Times. Barve is the lead author of new research, published this week in the journal Current Biology, that details the intricacies of these avian battle royales.
If this ferocious feathered spectacle sounds like it might be worth watching, you’re not alone. The researchers found that the territorial dust-ups are often attended by a crowd of non-violent onlookers, reports Kate Baggaley for Popular Science. These spectators will fly in from nearly two miles away, leaving their own territories unattended, just to spend an hour or so taking in the action.
The vicious fights, which can involve some 40 birds and feature continuous bouts lasting up to ten hours, are all in the name of gaining access to well-stocked “granaries,” which are dead trees that have been plugged full of thousands of acorns by the presiding woodpecker clan, according to Popular Science.
An acorn woodpecker granary. These crucial storehouses, which are typically created in dead trees or stumps, hold hundreds or even thousands of acorns that the woodpeckers use to survive when food is scarce.
(Neil Losin)
The granaries are controlled by social groups made up of as many as seven males that breed with between one and three females, per the paper. Strangely, these groups are usually composed of two unrelated sets of siblings—twin coalitions of brothers and sisters who mate with one another and vigorously defend the territory’s granaries against thieves.
The group is also bolstered by the presence of the offspring from prior years, called “helpers,” who typically hang around for five to six years to help their parents, aunts and uncles tend the nest. The helpers don’t breed in the group, and can’t reproduce until they find their own territories. As Runwal writes in the Times, “power struggles are thus a result of helpers striving to become breeders.”
When all the male or female members of a group controlling a choice chunk of habitat die off, it opens up an opportunity for coalitions of brothers or sisters acting as helpers in the area, which then descend on the area from far and wide and jockey for supremacy with one another to fill the vacancy. The coalitions are mostly made up of two to four birds and a dozen or more may show up to the fight, despite the fact that only one can win out.
“When you’re approaching a big tree with a power struggle from far away, you’ll first hear a lot of acorn woodpeckers calling very distinctly, and see birds flying around like crazy,” says Barve in a statement. “When you get closer, you can see that there are a dozen or more coalitions of three or four birds fighting and posturing on branches. One group has to beat all the others to win a spot in the territory, which is really, really rare in animals—even in fantasy novels it usually boils down to one army against the other.”
Using tiny radio transmitters attached to acorn woodpeckers in California’s Hasting’s Reserve, Barve and his team were able to study three power struggles in 2018 and 2019. Each battle involved coalitions of sisters fighting to fill the openings left by dead female woodpeckers, according to Popular Science. Until now, these avian conflicts have been too chaotic to study closely, but tiny harnesses strapped to the acorn-hoarding woodpeckers allowed the authors to uncover new and puzzling details.
Onlookers arrived within an hour of the fighting’s onset, according to the Times, and some of these passive observers spent as long as an hour of their day risking the security of their own acorns just to take in the violence. What exactly makes this expenditure of time and effort worth it to the birds on the sidelines isn’t clear.
“It seems like these power struggles are really important sources of social information,” Barve tells Popular Science. “Our best guess is [that] they get some juicy tidbits out of it.”
Damien Farine, an ecologist at the Max Planck Institute, tells the Times the study illustrates how tracking individual birds can illuminate how their societies function.
“With studies like this one, we’re starting to understand how populations are structured as an outcome of all its individuals’ behaviors,” Farine says.
This past summer, fires in California burned swaths of the oaky Hastings Reserve, reports Shawna Williams for the Scientist. Two large granaries that have been continuously restocked by successive generations of acorn woodpeckers for more than 50 years burned in the fire, and researchers are curious to see how the birds respond to the destruction. Will they make a new granary or wage a bloody war to take over another group’s territory?

Jai Jai Jagadisha (Marathi hymn, India)
Marathi Christians (मराठी ख्रिस्ती; Marāṭhī Khristī) are an ethno-religious community of Indian state of Maharashtra. According to the Census of India, there are over a million Christians in Maharashtra constituting 1.5% of the state's population. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marathi_Christians
Here is a popular Marathi Christian song recently recorded; an English summary of the lyrics is below.
“Jai Jai Jagadisha” composed by Rev. Narayan Vaman Tilak , a very composer and theologian (see below). Hear two other versions below.
youtube
+++
I asked on the Youtube page if someone could help me understand the lyrics, and Besty Reuben kindly responded with this:
This Marathi hymn is a praise to the Triune God. It is a cry invoking God's presence among men. The words come out of an intimate relationship with the Creator, thanking him for all that He is and therefore blessing the name of The Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit. The writer wants the glory of God to fill Him and wants the same for the entire world. He wants to convey the message that "God is all we need". The earth is personified as longing for God's mercy, grace and blessing. We can also say that the writer may be in deep personal thought about how wonderful the world would be if Immanuel - God is with us. This song was popularly sung as an opening hymn in schools, church gatherings and Christian get-togethers. One of my favourite hymns.
+++
About the composer:
Narayan Vaman Tilak (6 December 1861 – 9 May 1919) was a Marathi poet from the Konkan region of then Bombay Presidency in British India, and a famous convert to Christianity from Chitpavan Brahmin Community.
Read a lengthy summary of his life and ministry at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narayan_Waman_Tilak
He was an early leader in contextualization of local art forms to carry the Christian message. Here’ are some excerpts from the WIkipedia article:
From his Hindu years, he composed kirtans (musical religious services with a mixture of poetry and dramatic retelling of Hindu stories of religious inspiration, ... This continued into his Christian years when he led kirtans, trained Christian kirtankars, including his wife Laxmi, and published a little handbook Kirtan Kalap as a guide ... Owing to the very many hundred of devotional hymns which Rev. Tilak composed for church worship and for singing in villages, others saw him as the "Tagore of Western India."
After about ten years as a Christian he began expressing his faith in local idioms, particularly the poetic style of the Varkari Hindu sampradaya of Maharashtra. The many songs he composed remain very popular among Marathi speaking Christians. But Tilak was a critic of traditional Christianity, and for the last two years of his life moved beyond the church to focus on developing a new brotherhood of baptized and unbaptized disciples of Jesus. This new approach never took root due to Tilak's early death in Mumbai on May 9, 1919.
Tilak's son, Devdatt Narayan Tilak, edited and published the epic poem Christayana.
Tilak composed over a hundred Christian devotional songs in Marathi in either abhanga (अभंग) or ovi (ओवी) form. They were published in a book titled "Abhanganjali" (अभंगांजली).
Besides the initial parts ofthe eopic Khristayan (ख्रिस्तायन), Tilak wrote over 2,100 long poems comprising several hundred lines each.
+++
I recommend these books by my cholarly friend and mentor in :contextualization issues of India, who wrote two detailed books on Tilak’s life and art.
Richard, H.L., Following Jesus in the Hindu Context: The intriguing implications of N.V. Tilak’s life and thought. Revised American edition. Pasadena: William Carey Library, 1998.

"Film Sets Are Safer Today For Women," Says Devi Actress Kajol
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/film-sets-are-safer-today-for-women-says-devi-actress-kajol/
"Film Sets Are Safer Today For Women," Says Devi Actress Kajol
Kajol photographed at the screening of Devi.
Highlights
Kajol was last seen in Devi
“But we are getting better,” said Kajol
Kajol’s next film also stars Renuka Shahane
Mumbai:
With most production houses constituting a team to address complaints of any form of harassment, actor Kajol believes film sets have become safer workspace for women. The actor said people from the fraternity, including production houses, need to “police” their own and ensure a healthy working environment. “Right now, film sets are pretty safe. Our production house and a lot of others have put teams together to deal with people coming up to them with any kind of complaints. A film set is not a very big area. Everyone knows everything that’s happening. “There’s not much that you can really keep a secret. But we have to police our own, there’s nobody from outside who’s going to come in (and check). Each production house has to take responsibility and work through it,” Kajol told PTI in an interview.
The Hindi film industry has often come under scanner for its gender imbalance – both on screen and off screen. The 45-year-old actor said the industry is “slowly” moving in the right direction. “The world is gender imbalanced, not particularly the industry. But we are getting better. My short film Devi had an all women cast, our cinematographer was a woman. “I’ve just finished working with Renuka Shahane as well, another female director and I’m really happy about that. We are indeed progressing in that direction.” Kajol currently features in the short film Devi, which depicts how nine women belonging to different strata of society are brought together by circumstance and end up forming a sisterhood after they share their stories of abuse. Directed by Priyanka Banerjee, the short is produced by Niranjan Iyengar and Ryan Ivan Stephen.
Kajol said the conversation around abuse has been consistently happening but asked why it took a crime of Nirbhaya gangrape-murder-like proportions for people to stand up against atrocity. Devi is the kind of statement you want to make to men and women. It’s meant for people to take notice and start talking. The conversation has been going on but we always look at it with a tired acceptance of what’s happening. It takes something big, like a Nirbhaya, for us to stand up as a country,” she added.
“Why does it take that kind of an atrocity for us to stand up and say so far but no further?” she questioned. The actor said road to change was still quite long. It takes a lot to change societal mindsets, traditions that have been beaten down over centuries. The first mindset which needs to be changed is the woman’s, before anybody else can even come to the picture. You have to realise a victim is as victim does. Don’t be one, you won’t be seen as one.”
The short film also features Shruti Haasan, Neha Dhupia, Neena Kulkarni, Mukta Barve, Shivani Raghuvanshi, Yashaswini Dayama, Sandhya Mhatre and Rama Joshi.

Devi first look: Kajol makes a powerful statement alongside Shruti Haasan, Neha Dhupia in an all-women film. See pic - bollywood
Kajol made a remarkable comeback with Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, in which she plays Tanaji Malusare’s wife Savitribai Malusare. The actor has another powerful short film in the lineup, Devi. The first look of the entire female starcast of the film has been revealed and shows Kajol in an impressive sari-clad avatar. The picture shows Kajol sitting at the centre in a cotton sari looking intently at the camera. She is seen sharing the couch with a tipsy Shruti Haasan on the left and Neena Kulkarni sitting comfortably on the right with a worried expression. Neha Dhupia is seen standing confidently on the right in a pantsuit. Actor Yashaswini Dayama is seen sitting on the floor in a skirt-top and her hair in plaits. She, too, looks terrified. The picture also shows Mukta Barve leaning on to the couch in a burka, Sandhya Mhatre standing behind Kajol in an orange sari, Shivani Raghuvanshi is seen in a lab coat and Rama Joshi is standing extreme left in a salwar-suit.
Kajol and the entire cast of Devi. The film is being directed by Priyanka Banerjee and produced by Electric Apples Entertainment.Speaking about her debut in short film genre, Kajol told Mid Day, “I couldn’t have chosen a better subject for my first short film. My character, Jyoti, is vastly different from me, but uncannily, we share a lot of similarities. In today’s times when gender discrimination, abuse and violence is being spoken about vociferously, films like Devi are far more relevant.”Shruti further said, “We talk about sisterhood and how women need to stand with each other. Devi highlights that aspect with a powerful message.”Meanwhile, Kajol’s Tanhaji The Unsung Warrior has crossed the Rs 100 crore mark in six days of its release. The film has been declared tax free in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Directed by Om Raut, the film is set in the 17th century and is based on the life of Tanaji, the military leader of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s army.Kajol had said in one of the interviews that she felt responsible towards her role as there was no reference point to play Savitiribai. She said, “The sense of responsibility for this particular character was that I had no reference point. I couldn’t compare her to anybody. The responsibility, as an actor, lies with me, because I have to convince myself that what I’m doing is the right thing. That was a task.” Also read: Priyanka Chopra can’t keep her hands off Nick Jonas in their first song, reveals she fell in love with him when he took his shirt offCrediting the director Om Raut and costume designer Nachiket Barve for doing thorough research on the role, she said, “Both of them researched, questioned and verified all the facts. Catfight Is Outdated, Sisterhood Is The New Cool, Says Shruti Hassan In Working In Devi
[ad_1]
Kajol, Shruti Hassan, and Neena Kulkarni — actresses belonging to different generations — have worked together in the short film Devi. They insist that real empowerment will happen when women unite and share sisterhood, and catfight becomes an outdated concept.
For Shruti, sisterhood is an important aspect of empowerment. “I think the sisterhood is not strong enough, and that is one of…
