Nostalgia is an often-underappreciated component in nationalism: a carefully crafted collective yearning for a lost idealised and often non-existent past, used in the service of contemporary political projects. The ‘glorious golden age’ serves to galvanise a particular form of collective social identity that stresses shared cultural heritage for a unified nation. At the same time, nostalgic visions exclude those deemed internal and external ‘others’ responsible for the downfall of this golden age (the Mughal era is currently being removed from the Indian school syllabus). This repurposing and ‘presenting’ of the past – a kind of heritage politics – not only mobilises support for political causes and commercial interests but also provides distraction from bad governance, through the promise and vision of a regenerated past-inspired future, associated with pride and dominance over enemies. Nostalgia, therefore, can be used to build hegemony by nationalist movements and parties, by articulating disparate individuals and groups into a nationalist political identity while marginalising others.

Completely random headcanons made by me (a silly)
MK got banned from Club Penguin because she kept scamming people by promising to buy them memberships with their parents credit card info
Wayne and Raj broke a TV once by flinging Wii remotes into it during an intense game of Wii Sports Bowling
Julia did not go outside for 2 weeks after learning about Zayn leaving One Direction
Axel is completely oblivious to flirting at times, she also has accidental rizz (she explains how different tools work and girls think it’s hot)
Zee is super flexible and it freaks people out a lot
Chase once got to meet Jake Paul and he always mentions it in a conversation, always
Damien really got hooked onto Bill Nye the Science Guy during one ‘science’ class where the teacher just put on Bill Nye episodes
Ripper once tried to grow his hair into a mullet because he thought it was cool, immediately regretted it then shaved his entire head off because it was ‘cooler’
Priya only ever watched reality TV competition shows as a kid, never got to watch kids TV or anything like that UNLESS it was a competition show, but now she’s going back to watch a ton of classic childhood shows (and gets absolutely hooked on Power Rangers)
Millie can write super fast, but her handwriting is also kinda sloppy and a bit messy, she had to get one of those handwriting booklets as a kid and she never emotionally recovered
Caleb has watched every single episode of America’s Next Top Model because someone dared him to, he got attached to the show FAST
Nichelle is an amazing dancer, what she lacks in action skills (and skills in general), she makes up for with knowledge in so many different dance styles
Emma likes to go to a ton of different sports clubs, archery, basketball, trampolining, she thinks it’s a great way to get her worries out the way and enjoy herself
Scary Girl is an expert in dying people’s hair and is amazing at make-up, unfortunately nobody ever really wants her to do their hair and make up because well, they’re terrified of her (she loves that they’re scared)
Bowie has a secret soft spot for baking, if he has a bad day he’ll usually try and make himself something nice, and he loves to bake with Raj, even though when Raj tries to help the kitchen ends up a mess

Pink Pony Club: LGBT books with pink covers (that was the whole criteria this month, starting chill)
Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl by Andrea Lawlor
It’s 1993 and Paul Polydoris tends bar at the only gay club in a university town thrumming with politics and partying. He studies queer theory, has a dyke best friend, makes zines, and is a flaneur with a rich dating life. But Paul’s also got a secret: he’s a shapeshifter. Oscillating wildly from Riot Grrrl to leather cub, Paul transforms his body and his gender at will as he crossed the country––a journey and adventure through the deep queer archives of struggle and pleasure.
Of note: 90s queer culture, debut novel, Lawlor received the Whiting award for this novel
Your Driver is Waiting by Priya Guns
Damani is tired. Her father just died on the job at a fast-food joint, and now she lives paycheck to paycheck in a basement, caring for her mom and driving for an app that is constantly cutting her take. The city is roiling in protests–everybody’s in solidarity with somebody–but while she keeps hearing that they’re fighting for change on behalf of people like her, she literally can’t afford to pay attention. Then she gives a ride to Jolene (five stars, obviously). Jolene seems like she could be the perfect girlfriend–attentive, attractive, an ally–and their chemistry is off the charts. Jolene’s done the reading, she goes to every protest, and she says all the right things. So maybe Damani can look past the one thing that’s holding her back: she’s never dated anyone with money before, not to mention a white girl with money. But just as their romance intensifies and Damani finally lets her guard down, Jolene does something unforgivable, setting off an explosive chain of events.
Of note: satire, "gender-flipped Taxi Driver"
Gwen and Art Are Not in Love by Lex Croucher*
It’s been hundreds of years since King Arthur’s reign. His descendant, Arthur, a future Lord and general gadabout, has been betrothed to Gwendoline, the quick-witted, short-tempered princess of England, since birth. The only thing they can agree on is that they despise each other. They’re forced to spend the summer together at Camelot in the run up to their nuptials, and within 24 hours, Gwen has discovered Arthur kissing a boy and Arthur has gone digging for Gwen's childhood diary and found confessions about her crush on the kingdom's only lady knight, Bridget Leclair. Realizing they might make better allies than enemies, they make a reluctant pact to cover for each other, and as things heat up at the annual royal tournament, Gwen is swept off her feet by her knight and Arthur takes an interest in Gwen's royal brother.
Of note: YA, historical
*I personally recommend this book! There's interesting world building, playing with Arthurian legends. It's fun and tropey but not without genuinely emotional moments. And it's just such a good read. Bonus points for a character having an unnamed medical condition that shares symptoms with endometriosis.
Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuinston
When his mother became President, Alex Claremont-Diaz was promptly cast as the American equivalent of a young royal. Handsome, charismatic, genius―his image is pure millennial-marketing gold for the White House. There's only one problem: Alex has a beef with the actual prince, Henry, across the pond. And when the tabloids get hold of a photo involving an Alex-Henry altercation, U.S./British relations take a turn for the worse. Heads of family, state, and other handlers devise a plan for damage control: staging a truce between the two rivals. What at first begins as a fake, Instragramable friendship grows deeper, and more dangerous, than either Alex or Henry could have imagined. Soon Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret romance with a surprisingly unstuffy Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations and begs the question: Can love save the world after all? Where do we find the courage, and the power, to be the people we are meant to be? And how can we learn to let our true colors shine through?
Of note: adapted into a movie in 2023
We Were the Universe by Kimberly King Parsons
The trip was supposed to be fun. When Kit’s best friend gets dumped by his boyfriend, he begs her to ditch her family responsibilities for an idyllic weekend in the Montana mountains. They’ll soak in hot springs, then sneak a vape into a dive bar and drink too much, like old times. Instead, their getaway only reminds Kit of everything she’s lost lately: her wildness, her independence, and—most heartbreaking of all—her sister, Julie, who died a few years ago. When she returns home to the Dallas suburbs, Kit tries to settle in to her routine—long afternoons spent caring for her irrepressible daughter, going on therapist-advised dates with her concerned husband, and reluctantly taking her mother’s phone calls. But in the secret recesses of Kit’s mind, she’s reminiscing about the band she used to be in—and how they’d go out to the desert after shows and drop acid. She’s imagining an impossible threesome with her kid’s pretty gymnastics teacher and the cool playground mom. Keyed into everything that might distract from her surfacing pain, Kit spirals. As her already thin boundaries between reality and fantasy blur, she begins to wonder: Is Julie really gone?
Of note: considered "a most anticipated novel," released July 2024

Reading Update
Not Bleach-related, but since this is where I've been putting my writing updates, in my mind it's also where my reading ones should go. I basically only get to read things May-August, so I've been on a tear. But I keep reading things I don't end up liking? Which, HELP. WHY.
It makes me feel like such a hater, or someone who's too closed-off to things outside of my expectations that I automatically, anti-intellectually hate it, but then I'm like, okay, but I have not picked up a single fanfic this year that I did not think was brilliant. I have seen three movies this year I thought were brilliant (Fancy Dance, Evil Does Not Exist, and the Haikyuu movie, the last of which is definitely 100% like the other two)! I have read a lot of really fantastic article-length creative nonfiction that I also found brilliant!
MAYBE I JUST DON'T LIKE BOOKS.
Books I Really Liked
The Souvenir Museum - Elizabeth McCracken
Flux - Jinwoo Chong
Run Me To Earth - Paul Yoon
Shadow Life - Hiromi Goto
I know I just said "not Bleach-related," I actually think some Bleach folks would be into a lot of these, depending on where your specific interests within Bleach lie.
The Souvenir Museum had fabulous character work, and I love what I'm beginning to feel is something signature about McCracken, in that most of these stories were realist New England fiction and then out of the blue she slid one in there that was sorta-supernatural and also about cannibalism. Love that for her! Love that for me.
Flux is a speculative time travel thriller, but where it stands out is how much trust it places in its audience to follow along and hop in medias res with all these characters and premises. There's no extraneous exposition or explainers; it just drops you in the deep end and it's so much fun. There's also a lot in this book that is about TV and fandom and while I usually find it hard to buy into depictions of these things this book gets it so, so right for me. And the dialogue is fantastically tight and snappy and so full of life--I loved Part 1 in particular, and the book is worth it just for that!
Run Me To Earth is beautiful. Trenchant, haunting. Each character feels like a small poem, living and breathing and doing their best to avoid unexploded ordinances while riding a motorbike. And bonus Inuzuri vibes for me
(And Shadow Life I already talked about here. That's the one where a lady traps Death inside of her vacuum cleaner.)
Books I Am Actively Annoyed By
All That’s Left Unsaid - Tracey Lien
Your Driver is Waiting - Priya Guns
The Thousand Crimes of Ming Tsu - Tom Lin
AKA "maybe I just don't like genre fiction." These were a mystery, lesbian thriller, and western, respectively, and the whole time I was basically like, "we're really just doing this, huh?" In each of these, the character work wasn't strong enough to make the story, and I guess from each I expected more critical engagement with the genre? And not "we're going to un-self-consciously depict and then slaughter a bunch of bloodthirsty Indians because THAT'S WHAT WESTERNS DO." These were all books that sounded theoretically interesting to me but in practice were very not.
Nonfiction That I Wish Had Been Better
Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons from Marine Mammals - Alexis Pauline Gumbs
Dear Elia - Mimi Khuc
What We Talk About When We Talk About Rape - Sohaila Abdulali
Mott Street - Ava Chin
How to Read Now, Elaine Castillo
Eating Wildly - Ava Chin [DNF]
I think I'm just a pop nonfiction hater, because my issue with all of these is that they often felt like too-superficial treatments of their subject or seemed extremely (sometimes intentionally) undercited. Multiple of these kept making assertions about having developed an original thesis/practice or never having seen X in the world, when that's simply not true. These just make me think about all of the stylistically brilliant, incredibly thoughtful creative nonfiction being published online/in magazines, and how pale these book-length treatments feel in comparison.
(Almost) Everything Else
River East, River West - Aub Rey Lescure (this is the Naruto hentai book)
Our Missing Hearts - Celeste Ng
I Would Meet You Anywhere - Susan Ito
Tea: History, Terroirs, Varieties - Kevin Gascoyne
Bowlaway - Elizabeth McCracken
Book I Could Not Physically Read Because I Hated it So Much I Couldn't Stand It
The Leftover Woman, Jean Kwok
Future Reads
Four Treasures of the Sky - Jenny Zhang
Pnin - Vladimir Nabokov
Miko Kings, LeAnne Howe
A Bestiary - Lily Hoang

Hi. So, I know this isn't really what you do but I really like what you and your anons have to say whenever we open discourse in here and this has been stuck in my mind recently and I would really like to know you guys opinion on the matter. So here goes nothing, I guess.
I think it was you who I saw not that long ago saying that Finn is the one with the smartest career outside of ST out of the ST "kids". Which is an opinion I agree with. The second one will probably be Sadie, especially in recent years. Noah, Caleb, and Gaten seem to be trying to establish themselves in Hollywood more in recent years but I do think Noah is concentrating more on college and finishing ST5 atm while Caleb and Gaten seem to prefer Broadway.
Now, considering all this, I don't know why some people are so "worried" about Finn's career post-ST. Saying his "bright future" got ruined and he's gonna be all about angry teens, legacy movies, and 80s nostalgia. While I do think he's waiting for ST to finally be over to take on other roles he probably couldn't take before because of the ST image, I do believe he's gonna continue doing those kind of projects because he genuinely likes doing those movies.
I mean, look at him promoting Ghostbusters just last week. The only times that guy looked a little uncomfortable was when the ST questions came up. Now compared that to him promoting ST. I'm not saying he's tired of ST because he seems to be well aware that it made his career but I do think the ST fandom overwhelms him sometimes and with good reasons.
Honestly, out of the ST "kids", the one with the most "worrisome" career is Millie. Yes, she's very popular in and outside of Hollywood but she hasn't really established herself in Hollywood outside of ST/Netflix, not to mention that her projects seem to be catered more towards her female side of the fandom. There are also other things that I'm not gonna mention here but I think people can guess.
I know Millie kinda "blames" ST for not being able to take on other bigger projects but Finn and Sadie have been doing ST for (or almost) as long as she has and yet they're in big movies like It, Ghostbusters, and The Whale. Working alongside big celebrities like Paul Rudd and TS and renowned directors like Del Toro and Aronofsky. I know Finn and Sadie probably have more freedom since their characters are not as "big and important" as Eleven but still. It's a little weird, isn't it?
There's also the fact that the Godzilla movies seem to have dropped her because "she was too expensive for them". I don't know how old you are but I remember Twilight and how bad some of their careers got after they became "too expensive" for mainstream Hollywood.
Honestly, I think Finn and Sadie will be fine, at least for a while (we can never truly know the future, especially in Hollywood). Noah, Caleb, and Gaten will be fine too. I didn't mention Priya because compared to the other ST "kids" she has basically just started. Millie is the one people should be worried about.
Anyway, what do you guys think about this? If you don't want to post this, that's fine. Don't worry about it. Just needed to get this out of my mind and chest. Have a nice day!
PS: I'm not saying any of them are "bad actors" or anything. Just that some of them seem to have made some smarter career choices that others.
Hmm, these are all interesting points! I def agree that Finn and Sadie are at the top based on their overall career choices, although maybe I'd switch Sadie and Finn around slightly. I think Noah and Gaten are both wild cards given the fact that they haven't done as many projects outside of ST. I hope Noah's agent gives him better projects than The Tutor because he absolutely has the talent for it.
Caleb is a wild card too, but he's been good in the things I've seen him in like Concrete Cowboy. He also has a horror movie lined up called The Deliverance, but it's on Netflix so it's likely hit or miss. I think Gaten said somewhere that he was nervous about getting roles post S5, but you're right that his career has a lot of potential if he continues down the Broadway path.
"Now, considering all this, I don't know why some people are so "worried" about Finn's career post-ST. Saying his "bright future" got ruined and he's gonna be all about angry teens, legacy movies, and 80s nostalgia. While I do think he's waiting for ST to finally be over to take on other roles he probably couldn't take before because of the ST image, I do believe he's gonna continue doing those kind of projects because he genuinely likes doing those movies."
I think some are worried about Finn because they don't see him as being as good of an actor as the others maybe? I'm not sure how fair that is, and maybe I'm biased as a Finn stan, but I've never seen him as bad in any of the project's he's been it. With When You Finish Saving the World, he had an opportunity to work alongside some great people and I think he held his own. I think some of the issue may be that in some of his projects like Ghostbusters, especially the latest one, he really isn't being given the best material to work with. His co-star Mckenna Grace got all the meatier material.
I personally think Finn has A LOT of untapped potential and he just isn't being used properly. I know he doesn't have a big role, but I'm really, excited to see him in SNL 1975 as I think he has a lot of potential with comedy because he's funny as hell. And obviously, he has a lot of potential with writing/directing and with his music career too if he chooses to focus more on that side of things instead.
I find your points about Millie to be really intriguing! I agree with you that she hasn't established herself outside of Netflix other than the Godzilla movies, but I'm not sure I fully understand what you're getting at when you say, "her projects seem to be catered more towards her female side of the fandom" and, "There are also other things that I'm not gonna mention here but I think people can guess."
Opening this up to everyone! What are y'alls thoughts?

In The Fray, Pt 1
If Priya hadn't spent every day for the past quarter preparing for the Fray Theater's winter charity gala with Salem, she probably would have been more nervous about this cliffhouse weekend she had somehow convinced him to play along with. Priya's live-in partner, Paul mocked her relentlessly for packing and re-packing the same, slightly different four outfits all throughout the week. "Priya, the man has seen you naked during the uniform fittings. There are no surprises here!" Paul said as he took a bite out of a sloppily made ham sandwich, standing in the living room watching her fiddle with her duffel bag the day prior to her departure. Priya stared distantly at the crumbs from the rye bread tumbling from Paul's hand to the living room floor and grumped, though she knew he was right.
Salem and she had basically spent more time together over the past three months than your average group of theater kids at the local community college before the big year-end musical. They were on calls in the morning, and shuffling around downtown Philadelphia trying to get paperwork cleared by afternoon. These past three weeks especially had been hellish. She felt like she was planning a wedding, she was both the bride and the maid of honor simultaneously, and she wasn't even getting married or allowed to eat lobster at the reception!
Well, that last part wasn't entirely true. But still, even though Salem was pulling his weight (probably more, honestly) she felt overwhelmed. Her typical submissive exercises with Paul were barely keeping her on an even keel, despite the usual cold-bath routine's effectiveness at bringing her back to planet Earth. She was careful to keep this dynamic and her current stress levels from bleeding into her work, but despite her meticulous efforts to keep her exposed skin unblemished and unbruised, she didn't expect a few drinks to kick her scrupulous routine in the knees.
As far as Priya was aware, Salem was too slavishly busy managing city permits and AV agencies to have time for romance, let alone be concerned about her own orbit. She liked the way his dark hair crowded his jawline, and his hard brow... she was sure he wasn't lacking opportunity, after all. Yet, one night after a particularly rough day of wrangling contractors to repair the ceiling of the theater's foyer, Priya's assumptions were corrected over three and a half whiskey sours at the Ranstead Room.
"Women? Priya, women do not see me. They assume with a name like 'Salem' and casual use of the term 'polyamory' that I am some exiled escapee of the Muslim community, or something." Priya felt a small zap at the word, like the release of a static shock. Salem recognized the lack of guard on her face. She barely remembers exactly why or when, but somehow it all came out. The stress. The protocol. The constant attempt to tame the weird carnal energy on the job. The wearing of harnesses under her business suits and the shock collars cinched to thighs under her woolen skirts. Her eyes searching his face for... recognition? Familiarity?
Salem laughed casually at first. They had entered that state of inebriation where someone could admit to murder and their audience would hardly careen from the news. But as the alcohol's effects dwindled in the smaller hours of the morning, the laughs became more hesitant, the locking of eyes a little more sustained.
Many days passed after they parted ways that night where even the subject of personal life did not cross their usual conversational bound. Priya began to become anxious about her professionalism, fiddling with her glasses while they reviewed schematics over lunch. Had she made things awkward? Maybe Salem wasn't that kind of open. Did he think her a freak? Was there a way to rectify the image?
A week later, while standing in the box office many hours before the theater opened to do routine PA tests, Salem entered the booth. Priya looked up from her clipboard but before she could break the silence, he cautiously lifted his hand to her throat and pulled down the lip of her turtleneck, exposing her clavicle... and a discreet prong collar. Her eyes locked with his in a panic, and he released the fabric with such nonchalance she wasn't even sure she had been exposed at all. The corners of his mouth, however, betrayed his amusement as he handed her a cup of coffee in a paper cup and exited the booth.
When she found the little cliffhouse up the coast posted on a vacation rental website, she did not resist the impulse. She booked it for the weekend after the gala was set to take place. She told herself it was to guarantee she would actually take a vacation after this frenzy. She told Paul it was to truly unplug. But she knew... she wanted to be confined to four walls with Salem, where no one could watch them from the light booth.
