30th December 1917 - Mediterranean Sea.
HMT Aragon was sunk by a U Boat off the coast of Egypt. Aragon and another transport ship, the Nile, left Marseille in December 1917. Aboard Aragon were about 2,500 personnel to reinforce those units based in Egypt. The two ships anchored at Windy Bay, Malta on 23rd December where they remained for four or five days before continuing on to Alexandria. For the last leg of the journey they were escorted by HMS Attack and two Japanese Navy Destroyers. Off the coast of Egypt, the Nile continued to Port Said with the two Japanese ships. The Aragon was ordered to anchor in Alexandria roads while HMS Attack swept the channel into the harbour for mines. While Attack was away, Aragon received an order from an armed Trawler HMT Points Castle to follow her into port. As they entered the channel, Attack reappeared and ordered the Captain of the Aragon back out to sea.
It was now about 11 am and both Aragon and HMS Attack were at sea about 10 miles from Alexandria when the troopship was hit by a torpedo fired by UC-34, a German submarine commanded by an Austrian, Oberleutnant zur See Horst Obermüller.
The Aragon began to list badly, preventing some of her lifeboats being launched. Despite their protests, the 160 members of the Voluntary Aid Detachment were ordered on the first lifeboat to be launched. HMS Attack and Points Castle began rescuing men from the sea and transferring men from the ship by line. During this operation UC 34 launched another torpedo hitting HMS Attack amidships. Oil from her bunkers flooded onto the sea smothering the men in the water. Aragon sank about 20 minutes after being hit. HMS Attack broke in two pieces, sinking within 7 minutes. As well as her crew of 70, she had between 300 and 400 personnel from Aragon aboard. In all 10 men of HMS Attack died in the disaster while some 600 of those aboard the Aragon died, including her Captain, Frank Bateman, 19 of her crew and 6 members of the Voluntary Aid Detachment. Nine of the soldiers aboard were men of 1st Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment.
They were;
8675 Lance Corporal Thomas Culleton, Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow
5604 Lance Corporal Alan Turner, Carrick-On-Suir, Co. Tipperary
3173 Private Arthur Broderick, St. Peter’s Port, Guernsey

Traditional Irish music lures visitors to Doolin like a Siren's song, and cruises of the nearby Cliffs of Moher keep them coming back for more. Highlights and Inclusions:
Accommodations: Dublin 1 night, B&B 4 nights, Bunratty Castle Hotel 1 night
Breakfast daily except where noted otherwise
5-day automatic car rental with unlimited mileage and CDW.
Private arrival transfers
Jameson Whiskey Distillery Tour with
Comparison Tasting
Bunratty Medieval Banquet
Dublin - 1 night
DAY 1: Arrive in Dublin
Arrive in Dublin and collect your bags. As you exit customs, your transfer representative will be waiting to take you to your hotel. Once you've gotten settled, head to the Jameson Whiskey Distillery for a tour of the facility and a comparison tasting. Use the afternoon to visit Trinity College and see the Book of Kells, an illustrated Gospel manuscript book dating back to the 9th century. After dinner, grab a pint at John Mulligan's - a Dublin institution since 1782.
JAMESON WHISKEY DISTILLERY TOUR WITH COMPARISON TASTING
The Old Jameson Distillery tour takes you on a journey into the romantic past of the art of Irish whiskey making. Although Jameson is sold all over the world today, it has its roots in this small distillery on Bow Street, founded in 1780 by John Jameson. Begin your tour with an introductory video, "The Story of Jameson." Afterwards you are invited to participate in a comparative tasting and sample a complimentary glass of Jameson, which is growing in popularity faster than any other whiskey in the world.
Cork - 1 night
DAY 2: Arrive in Cork
In the morning, make your way back to the airport to pick up your five-day rental car. From here on out, the routes you take and the stops you make are entirely up to you. You'll be making your way southwest to Cork, but there is plenty to see along the way. In "the marble city" of Kilkenny, take a tour of the 12th-century Kilkenny Castle, which will be guided or unguided depending on the time of year. The coastal route to Cork might be a bit more circuitous, but there are some breathtaking sights along the drive. Consider a stop at Hook Head Lighthouse in County Wexford, the oldest working lighthouse in the world. If you drive through Waterford, Ireland's oldest city, be sure to stop by the House of the Waterford Crystal and wander the medieval city center. When you arrive in Cork, check into your B&B and go for a walk to stretch your legs after a long day of driving. Treat yourself to an authentic Irish meal - bacon and cabbage, smoked salmon on soda bread, or, if you've got a stomach of steel, some tripe and drisheen from the English Market. Head back to your B&B so you can get some rest before your next full day of driving and sightseeing.
Killarney - 2 nights
DAY 3: Arrive in Killarney
Enjoy a fabulous breakfast at your B&B before heading out for another day of sightseeing. Just five miles northwest of Cork lies the town of Blarney, home to the Blarney Castle and the Blarney Stone, which is said to bestow the gift of eloquence upon anyone who kisses it. In coastal Kinsale, take a barefoot walk on the beach or do some shopping in the town's whimsically colored boutiques. Those interested in history will want to visit the Titanic Experience in Cobh, housed in the original White Star Line Ticket Office where the final 123 passengers boarded the ill-fated ocean liner. When you've explored the Cork area to your liking, make your way to Killarney and check into your B&B. Take a leisurely stroll through the town and have dinner. The rest of your night is yours to explore - or not! - as you see fit.
DAY 4:
Today is all about magnificent Irish panoramas!
The 111-mile Ring of Kerry is one of the country's most spectacular scenic displays, winding past unspoiled beaches, medieval ruins, mountains, lush green pastures, and craggy island overlooks. Highlights of this drive include Derrynane National Historic Park, the colorful town of Kenmare, Skellig Michael, and the sprawling estate of Kells Bay House and Gardens. Keep in mind that Ring of Kerry tour buses are also departing from Killarney. If you decide to drive the circuit clockwise, the same direction as the buses, you might want to give them a good head start so they don't slow you down.
Just south of Killarney on the Ring of Kerry lies the pristine landscape of Killarney National Park. The area boasts miles of meandering trails that vary in grading from multi-access to very difficult. The 15th-century Ross Castle is one of the park's biggest attractions, as is the Victorian Muckross House. Immerse yourself in the natural surroundings with a stop at the Torc Waterfall, a picnic at the Lakes of Killarney, or a walk through the park's yew woodland.
After a whirlwind day of sightseeing, return to your B&B to rest and rejuvenate. For dinner, try a traditional Irish stew or boxty, a fried potato pancake. Be sure to carve out some time for a tour of Killarney and the park in a traditional jaunting car.
Galway - 1 night
DAY 5: Arrive in Galway
After an early breakfast, pack up your car and head north to Tarbert, where you'll catch the 20-minute ferry to Killimer. You won't have any problem filling your day in County Clare, with its sheer cliffs and rock formations, quaint Irish villages, and expansive water views. Don't miss the iconic Cliffs of Moher and the wild, windswept Loop Head Peninsula. Make a stop in Miltown Malbay for a taste of traditional Irish music, then head just a few minutes south to explore the rock pools, coves, and low cliffs of Spanish Point. Continue inland through rocky Burren National Park on your way to Galway. Check into your B&B and head into the city for dinner.
Bunratty - 1 night
DAY 6: Arrive in Bunratty
The only major urban hub on the Wild Atlantic Way, Galway is a lively mix of shop-lined streets and historic pubs. It's also a gateway to the natural wonders of County Galway. Visit the Dunguaire Castle on the southeastern shore of Galway Bay, or peruse the food and produce stalls of the centuries-old Galway Market. If you want to continue your landscape tour of Ireland, Connemara National Park lays claim to over 7,300 acres of mountains, woodlands, rivers, bogs, and heath. When you've seen your fill of County Galway, head south to County Clare and check into the Bunratty Castle Hotel. Depending on your itinerary for the day, you may or may not have some free time before your medieval banquet at the Bunratty Castle.
BUNRATTY MEDIEVAL BANQUET
Bunratty Castle was built in the 15th century by the Earl of Thomond, who was famous for his lavish parties and hospitality. Following this tradition, the world-renowned Bunratty Medieval Banquet is held twice nightly throughout the year. The evening will feature a four-course meal with wine, a lively reception, and entertainment by the Bunratty Singers.
DAY 7:
After breakfast, check out of your hotel and drive to Shannon Airport where you'll return your rental car. You'll no doubt be planning your next trip the Emerald Isle before your plane even lifts off the ground....

The Idea of the plan begins
Entry 2: A place to flop and a way to pay our way.
I am not your typical spontaneous person, I don’t like surprises nor do I appreciate people hiding cheese in my underwear draw, but that is a story for another time.
Tumblr media
That being noted and please stop looking at my under-things, I need to make a plan, and a cheese sandwich it appears.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Where do I live is the first question for me, and that one is difficult due to I am living 3 states away from the designated Landing zone.
Tumblr media
However I have a camp in the Waterford area of Maine and it is paid for so I can stay there until October, which will give us a chance to either try for a mortgage or an apartment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think The goal is the Lewiston, Auburn areas of Maine where there are jobs and we do not need to work in Downtown Portland (big city)
Tumblr media
Next on the list was Jobs, she is still looking and as for me I am employed by a one of the world’s largest global Private Security Company and will be transferring to that state. She is going to have to hunt a bit and maybe take a Summer seasonal job, we cannot be without paychecks or Cheese to stay on track.

Spray and Pray: prologue

With the help of a private detective, Sirius Li, they delve deep into the mystery  of John's death, encountering along the way a criminal empire, migraine sprays, and a secret plot that could bring the end of the world as we know it. Will Anastasia and Sirius discover the cause of John's death, or will the forces against them stop them from discovering the truth?
Read it at wattpad and AO3.
Hey guys, this is my first original story. If you like murder-mystery-comedy-romances, this is the story for you. If you like the story and have a wattpad account, maybe also leave a comment or a vote? Thanks
Anastasia Bloodworth might have been a little drunk. On the scale of drunkenness—1 being ‘just a sip’ and 10 being ‘dead’—she was somewhere around a 4: unfit for driving but still lucid. Just tipsy enough for the bubbles to settle comfortably in her veins and spread their warm sunlight throughout her body. Anastasia was by every definition a social drinker, which meant that she had the common sense to call an Uber to and from the party venue unlike her more alcoholic friends, who relied on their husbands to chauffeur them around like they were the second coming of Princess Diana.
Her Uber driver, an older Caucasian man who was trying to get a glimpse of the more prominent aspects of Anastasia’s body with his pitifully tiny mirrors, rolled his Toyota to a stop in front of her mansion. She exited swiftly and produced her phone. His eyes take their time travelling up from her body to the mansion behind her, and then to the gem-covered jelly phone case. He rolled the window down and fished around his pockets for his phone.
“It’s 16 bucks, 60 cents, roight?” he drawled.
“Yes,” she said in a perfectly American accent. “16 dollars and 60 cents.”
He blinked rapidly. The automatic lights for the front yard had finally flickered on, illuminating her silhouette in a cold blue-white glow. He saw the dark ebony of her skin and let out a silent “oh” in realization. Anastasia sighed internally. He probably thought she was an aboriginal woman. This wouldn’t be the first time someone had made that assumption.
He tapped something in his phone, humming to himself a tuneless tune. The money was transferred. Transaction complete. Anastasia was about to walk away when the driver called out to her.
“Hey, madam, before you go, gonna give you a little something.”
Before she could open her mouth, the Uber driver grabbed her hand and placed a cheap, thin card on her palm. It had the driver’s name and number on it, as well as a picture of his face. The photo was either taken years ago (not likely) or was heavily edited (more likely) because the man in front of her and the man on the card looked like two different people. She looked up to see the man, apparently named “Luke” according to his ill-made card, wink at her surreptitiously.
Anastasia grimaced at his thinly veiled attempts of flirting. Ignorant of the face she was making, or perhaps because he was as blind as he was ugly, the driver smiled widely.
“Call me on my number next time and I’ll take you anywhere for free, beautiful.”
He gave another ill-suited wink. Anastasia nodded stiffly and opened the gates as the driver pulled the old Toyota out of park and drove quietly through the streets. When she’s sure he was gone, she opened up her phone.
For a second, she thought about Uber and its practice of letting employees live and die by the reviews they received. Anastasia was pretty sure it was the plot of some depressing sci-fi show she watched once and completely forgot about until now. She wondered about her creepy driver and ruminated about the circumstances that led to him becoming an Uber driver. Perhaps he was desperate for cash. Perhaps this was the only job he could do, a pitiful cab job at minimum wage in his clean but old car in the Applecross suburbs.
Anastasia felt a small pang of pity, and perhaps compassion, for this Uber driver. His career could very well be in the palm of her hands. With one review, she could make or break his career.
She opened up the Uber app and gave a 2-star review.
Car’s clean, drive was fine, but the driver is a creep. AVOID THIS GUY
She put her phone back into her purse, walked the far-too-many steps to the front door, and stepped inside.
The first thing she noticed was how dark it was. At least the street had the excuse of being dark because the council didn’t want to install too many lights to ‘disturb the wildlife’, whatever that meant. It was barely past 11pm and she was sure her husband should be up. She fumbled around the right wall for the light switches, flicking them all on with a swipe of her hand. She squinted at the sudden assault of bright light on her eyes.
“Joooohn, I’m hooome.”
No response. Anastasia just shook her head lightly, sat down at the staircase and took off her beautiful fake Prada heels. She admired the shoes as the fake stones glitter and glisten in the light before chucking them in a corner with the rest of her shoes. They’ll be fine, she thought. She’ll sort the mess out tomorrow.
“John?” Anastasia called. “I’m back early! John?”
Still no response. That was weird. John couldn’t be out. There was nothing to do in Perth at this time of night except sleep, drink, party, and have sex. John wasn’t a fan of any of those four things.
A small part of her, confined to a tiny corner of her mind, was concerned for her husband’s lack of response but she was just tipsy enough to not care. The Anastasia of tomorrow could deal with that crap. With that out of the way, she crawled up the staircase, retreated into her bedroom’s en-suite bathroom and got a well-earned shower.
As the water poured over her head and shoulders, Anastasia felt her body groan in exhaustion. It was only yesterday that she got invited to go partying at Rachel’s house in Waterford. As always, the people present exceeded the house’s generous capacity, and she had to do a lot of shoving and pushing just to get into the next room. As one of the hostess’s bestie, Anastasia had the 'honour' of talking to every single guest, half of which were over the blood alcohol limit long before they even arrived at the party. It was a mess, but that was how the girls liked it. Anastasia never had fun playing the mom friend but she reached her limit when Rachel began doing random body shots with men ten years her junior all while her husband was gaping in the next room. Anastasia made the prompt decision to bolt out of there, using her dear husband John as an excuse, before quickly calling an Uber home. She didn’t want to be there for the ensuing argument and she definitely didn’t want to be there to comfort Rachel for something she rightfully brought upon herself (again).
She exited the bedroom in her ugly but comfortable pyjamas when she spied light spilling out of the door to John’s bedroom. Slanted rectangles of white dyed the Italian stone tiles and Persian-style rug with an ethereal glow.
“John?” She called again. Still no response.
The niggling tendrils of doubt and worry creep into her mind. It was perfectly normal for John to spend all night working in his bedroom but he always had the decency to respond on at least the third attempt. Her brain conjured pictures of burglars and thieves, of John cowering in the corner while one balaclava-clad burglar bunged him on the head with a baton.
She laughed nervously to herself. “I’m just imagining things,” she stared at the light filtering out of John’s room, “…aren’t I?”
A peek into his bedroom would be alright, right? They were husband and wife after all. Marriage gave you the right to snoop on your partner, she convinced herself, that was why it was invented. She stared through the keyhole. She expected a pristine and clean tidy bedroom with John typing away on his computer in the corner wearing headphones, ignorant of the scolding he will soon get.
Instead, the bedroom was in complete disarray, with furniture toppled over and random objects strewn across the carpeted floor. Something went past the keyhole, blocking the light for a second. It looked remarkably like a man’s hairy arm.
Anastasia stepped back, holding her hand over her mouth to hide a gasp. OK, there’s burglars. Fuck fuck fuck, what do I do? She couldn’t fight them off, could she? She had no training in the martial arts, not unless those Jackie Chan films count. She scanned the hallway, looking for a weapon and her eyes catch on a bag on the floor. She quickly checked inside. It’s John’s, and it had a whole bunch of papers in them, which made it heavy. Did a bag count as a weapon? Anastasia didn’t know but she grabbed it as silently as she could. Her free hand went onto the door handle and turned, but it didn't open. It wasn’t locked, but no matter how hard she pushed, the door would not budge. It was almost as if someone had blockaded the door.
She briefly wondered about any alternative entry points into John’s bedroom. It was on the second floor with its own en-suite bathroom and no other connecting rooms, so unless Anastasia felt like scaling the walls from the outside, she was going to have to break the door down. There was no way Anastasia was going to risk her nails for her husband. A bruised shoulder would be less expensive than a chipped nail.
She braced herself, knowing it was going to hurt, and shoved her body at the door. The first two times did nothing, but on the third time, she was able to force her way through, nearly stumbling to the other side of the room as the door hit the wall with a whack.
“F-freeze, bitches,” she yelled, raising her bag threateningly, only to find that there was no one there. No burglars, no would-be murderers. No John.
With knitted brows, she looked at the messy bedroom. There was no way there hadn’t been a struggle here. John’s pharmacology textbooks had been thrown to the ground, the vase at his deck lying in pieces on the floor. Maybe John was hiding, she thought. She checked John’s spacious closet and she checked the bathroom. She even checked under the bed and behind the curtain and the locked windowsill. Nothing. No sign of him.
“But I could’ve sworn I saw an arm…” That’s when she saw it, a black strap hanging from the door. Tentatively, she pulled the door closed.
And there she found John, unconscious and naked, hanging from a noose with a travel pillow over his neck.
Anastasia groaned, dropping the bag at her feet. “Oh come on, not again, John.” She rolled her eyes as she began to loosen the noose over his neck. “Over and over again, I tell you, wait for me to be a spotter, and what do you do? You go and hang yourself alone. Again!” She’d tell him off good and proper if she wasn’t so exhausted and if he wasn’t unconscious. What good was arguing at him when he couldn’t even hear her? She grumbled insults under her breath, her lips pressed into a thin line. As she moved to pull John down, her hand brushed against his skin and abruptly stopped in place.
He wasn’t warm or clammy. In fact, he was cold. A bit too cold. Frantically, Anastasia tried to find a pulse on his wrist. Was it two fingers, or three? Near the bone or towards the side? She couldn’t remember at all. She tried everywhere on his wrist, but she could feel nothing and he was still very very cold. She waved her hand over his mouth and his nose, hoping to maybe feel the breath escape his lungs but she couldn’t even feel that. He wasn’t breathing at all.
Anastasia stepped backwards into the wall and stared at his body in shock. John was dead. John had actually gone and autoasphyxiated himself to death. He had to go and die the most embarrassing, reputation-breaking way possible. Her friends were going to find out, she’ll become the laughing stock of her friends, and everything she had worked hard to cultivate in Australia will crumble to dust.
“Fucking hell, John,” she sighed.
She went back to her bedroom and grabbed her phone. She dialled 000 and said, in as calm a voice that she could, that her husband was dead and that she needed police. When the call was done, she flung the phone onto her bed and changed out of her comfy pyjamas into a sexy pink, sheer nightgown. If the police were going to come to her house, no way was she going to greet them in those ugly pyjamas.

The 7 Day South Africa Travel Itinerary
South Africa is a big country and thus difficult to travel all over the country in one week. I’d suggest focusing on one region instead of trying to visit many places that are far apart. One week is a perfect time for visiting the Western Cape and Cape Town. In this 7 day South Africa Travel Itinerary and Guide, you’ll be able to explore the most beautiful city in Africa, see African animals on a safari drive, visit some of the finest wine estates in the country and admire the diverse marine life of the Pacific Ocean. The Western Cape is a great place to visit for culture lovers, food and wine connoisseurs, adventure junkies and wildlife admirers.
However, before proceeding further, its a good idea to check out where to stay in Cape Town, as you’ll be spending 3 nights out of 7 Nights of your Trip to South Africa in Cape Town.
Best areas to stay in Cape Town
Staying close to the City Bowl is the best option for short-time visitors, V&A Waterfront and Green Point are our top picks here. Both areas are pretty safe, close to the city center and several routes of the Cape Town Red Bus start and end here.
Budget Accommodation in Cape Town –  Never@Home Cape Town | A Sunflower Stop Backpackers |
Middle priced –  House on the Hill | Fairmile on Main
Luxury Accommodation in Cape Town –  Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Town Waterfront Breakwater Lodge | Victoria & Alfred Hotel
  [toc]
  (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
  Day 1 – Cape Town
Morning – Take a tour to Robben Island, the prison where Nelson Madela spent 18 of 27 years in prison. It’s definitely the place to include in your Cape Town itinerary. The tour includes a 30-minute boat ride from V&A Harbour to the island and back and a 2-hour prison tour.  On the way you’ll get a chance to see Cape Fur seals swimming in the shallow waters of the harbor. The views of the Waterfront with Table Mountain and Lion’s Head on the background from the boat are spectacular.
Afternoon – To continue learning about the history of South Africa visit The Castle of Good Hope, the birthplace of Cape Town and District Six Museum where you can find out more about the life in South Africa during the Apparteid.
As an option instead of visiting the Castle you can spend a couple of hours at Two Ocean Aquarium where you can see the marine fauna and flora native to the region. The Aquarium is a great place to visit for travelers with children, they’ll enjoy watching the daily feeding of penguins, sea turtles and sharks.
Evening – Watching the sunset from the top of Lion’s Head is a must-do in Cape Town. Joining a sunset Red Bus tour is probably the easiest way you don’t have to worry about finding a parking spot and making it in time for the sunset. You can finish the day with dinner at one of the restaurants close to your hotel.
  V&A Waterfront
Pro Tip – Renting a car is the best and the easiest way to explore the surroundings, and cover all the destinations, recommended in this 7 Day South Africa Travel Itinerary.
However, in Cape Town – rush hours traffic in the city centre is quite hectic and finding a parking spot sometimes is hard even for locals. To move around the city the Cape Town Red Bus is a good and comfortable option. These busses have several routes that take tourists to the city’s main sights and attractions.
Travelers who don’t want to rent a car will be able to visit Cape Town’s surrounding areas with tours. There are many day tours from the city e.g. safari drives, wine tasting, scenic drives, etc.
  Day 2 – Cape Town
Morning – It’s time to visit the most iconic attraction in Cape Town, i.e –  Table Mountain. To get to the top of Table Mountain you can walk along Platteklip Gorge (the most popular hiking route) or take a cable car. The walk up is quite tough – steep rock stairs all the way. It takes 1 – 1 hour and 30min to hike to the top. The cable car ride is only 15 minutes. You can buy tickets online or at the Cable Car station. The views from the top of the Mountain are spectacular, the best views of Cape Town and its surroundings. The surface area of Table Mountain is quite big; you can spend a couple of hours walking on the top and taking photos.
PS – Make sure to take a jacket, as sometimes it gets very chilly up there.
  Table Mountain from the Beach
Afternoon – On the way from Table Mountain to the City Bowl stop at Bo Kaap, the most colorful of Cape Town’s neighbourhoods. This Malay district became one of the tourists’ favorite attractions in the city. Every house here is painted in bright colors; green, red, orange, blue, yellow, purple are just some of them. Bo Kaap is another awesome spot for Instagram photos.
From Bo Kaap head to Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden – a green paradise within the city limits. You can set a picnic on the grass in the shade of massive trees. You can bring a picnic basket with you or buy it at Moyo Restaurant inside the Garden where there are basket sets for vegetarians, gluten free and pescaterians. The Tree Canopy Walkway is not to miss in the Garden, as you can get amazing views from up there.
  Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden
Evening – Taking a Sunset Champagne cruise from the Waterfront is a perfect way to finish the day 2 of this 7 day South Africa Travel Itinerary.
  (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Day 3 –  Cape Winelands: Stellenbosch & Franschhoek
Distance (Cape Town City Bowl – Stellenbosch) – 55km
Driving time – 1 hour
There are two ways of visiting the Winelands from Cape Town; first, renting a car and second, joining a tour. If you want to have more flexibility and stay overnight in Stellenbosch or Franschhoek, renting a car is the way to go. If renting a car and driving around sounds like too much of a mission then joining a tour with a transfer from your hotel in Cape Town is a perfect option for you. The tour will take you to several wine farms where you can do tasting and have lunch or snacks.
If you decide to rent a car, the best way of visiting the Winelands is staying for the night at one of the wine estates in Stellenbosch or Franschhoek. It’s a much better option than driving back to Cape Town, especially after visiting a couple of wine farms.
Morning – I’d recommend having breakfast in Stellenbosch downtown at one of the arty coffee shops. There are many interesting places to visit in Stellenbosch. After breakfast, spend some time walking around the town; stroll along Dorp Street, visit the University and the Botanical Garden.
Afternoon – It’s time to do wine tasting! There are many beautiful wine estates around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. I’d suggest starting with a wine and chocolate pairing at Spier Wine Estate, it’s a very special experience. Every chocolate is made to complement a specifique wine. In between to clean the palate you are offered Spier’s Méthode Cap Classique.
Another estate I definitely recommend visiting is Waterford, a little corner of Italy in Africa. The scenery and the main farm building reminds of a wine farm somewhere in Tuscany. The wines here are great, definitely try the local Cabernet Sauvignon.
To continue the day head to Tokara Wine Estate, one of the most beautiful farms around Stellenbosch. The scenery here is truly breathtaking and their wines are top quality. There is a restaurant at the estate where you can combine wine tasting with lunch. Tokara has a couple of luxurious bungalows that you can rent for a night.
  Tokara Wine Estate
From Tokara you drive to Franschhoek (French Corner in Afrikaans) a small town that is famous for its exquisite cuisine and fine wines. Before visiting one of the estates in Franschhoek do a scenic drive over The Franschhoek Pass for some breathtaking views of the valley. On the way down from the Pass stop at Haute Cabriere estate to continue with wine tasting.
  Haute Cabriere estate
From there drive to Dieu Donne Vineyards, our favorite wine farm in Franschhoek. Every time we are in the area we come here for tasting. For white wine lovers the local Wooded Chardonnay is a must-try. The estate has a great outside tasting area with some stunning views. If all these driving and tasting made you a bit hungry you can complement the wine tasting with a cheese platter.
As an option after driving over the Pass you can park your car in the town and jump on a wine tram that will take you to several wine farms where you can continue the tasting. An advantage of this is that you don’t have to drive so you can just relax and enjoy the wine.
  Wine Tram in Franschhoek
There are many accommodation options in Franschhoek. I’d recommend staying at one of the farms, in a rustic cottage in the vineyards.
Evening – Don’t forget to book your dinner beforehand there are many first-class restaurants in the town and many of them require advanced booking. I can recommend Grande Provence Estate a beautiful venue with delicious food, a perfect place for a romantic dinner.
  Accommodation Recommendations in Franschhoek
Le Petit Paris | Lavender Farm Guest House | Le Franschhoek Hotel & Spa |
  (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Day 4 – Safari drive in Aquila Private Game Reserve
Distance (Franschhoek – Aquila Game Reserve) – 150km
Driving time – 1h30min.
On the way out of Franschhoek, stop for breakfast at Big Dog Cafe, a great place with a beautiful garden and the best coffee in the town.
To make the most out of your day 4 of this One Week South Africa Travel Itinerary, I’d suggest staying at Aquila for the night this way you’ll get to do a day and a night drive in the Reserve. The Reserve has rooms and cottages for rent, the complex includes a spa center, a restaurant, an infinity pool and a bar.
Aquila is a 10 000 hectares reserve where African animals roam freely in their natural habitat. The Reserve is a home for many animals including the famous African Big 5; elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard. If you’re lucky you might see all of them and many other animals in one day. You can do a morning, an afternoon, a sunset or a night safari drive.
For those who decide not to rent a car and rather be based in Cape Town for the entire duration of the 7 Day Trip to South Africa, it’s possible to visit the Game Reserve as a day tour from the city.
    Day 5 – Cape Agulhas
Distance (Aquila Game Reserve – Cape Agulhas) – 230km
Driving time – 3h.
Morning – In the spring, October – December, the route is especially beautiful. Many Blue Jacaranda trees in blossom along the road make you want to stop at every corner for taking photos. The route goes through the vineyards and the wheat fields back to the coast. In a couple of hours you get to see the green hills covered in vineyards, the rolling wheat fields and the ocean.
Cape Agulhas is famous for being the Southernmost point of the African continent. The town itself is small and quiet, mostly holiday houses and small hotels. At the Cape there is a monument – a big metal map of Africa with its main natural attractions. The Agulhas Lighthouse at the Cape is the second oldest operating lighthouse in the country.
Cape Agulhas Lighthouse | Flickr | Christopher Griner
Afternoon – Arniston, a small fishermen’s village 45km from Cape Agulhas is another interesting place to visit. It’s more off the beaten track place that not many tourists know about. Arniston is famous for its traditional white fishermen cottages and the Waenhuiskrans Cave. The Cave is quite big and impressive, it can be visited only at low tide, at high tide the entrance to the cave is under water.
Evening – Watch the sunset at the beach in Cape Agulhas and enjoy dinner at one of the small local restaurants.
South African Countryside
Accommodation Recommendations in Cape Agulhas
Agulhas Ocean House | Villa Cape Agulhas | Tides’ Song
  (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
  Day 6 – Hermanus
Distance (Cape Agulhas – Hermanus) – 130km
Driving time – 2h.
Morning – It’s time to observe some gracious and scary marine animals like whales, sharks, dolphins and seals. August to October is the best time to see Southern Right Whales in the waters near Hermanus. Other marine animals like Great White Sharks, Bryde’s Whales, dolphins, Cape Fur seals, African penguins are here all year round. If you’re very lucky you might see the Marine Big 5; three different species of whales (the Southern Right, Humpback and Bryde’s Whales), the Great White shark and the Cape fur seal.
  The African penguins
  Seal Colony
If you like adventurous activities try shark cage diving, where you get a chance of a close-up meeting with the Great White shark or the Bronze Whaler shark.
Afternoon – Hermanus is famous for its wine farms and seafood restaurants. After the marine adventure you can spend the second half of the day relaxing and enjoying great wine and delicious food. In the peak season you can see Southern Right Whales from one of the seaside restaurants.
Evening – Go for a refreshing walk along the sea, enjoy the sunset, have a glass of wine and a nice dinner at one of the restaurants.
  Voelklip Beach in Hermanus
Accommodation Recommendations in Hermanus
The Nantucket | Windsor Hotel Hermanus | One Marine Drive Boutique Hotel
  (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Day 7 – The scenic drive along the coast
Distance (Hermanus – Cape Point – Cape Town) – 250km
Driving time – 6-8 hours including stops on the way
I’d definitely recommend driving all the way along the coast. The parts from Hermanus to Strand, from Muizenberg to Cape Point National Park and Chapman’s Peak Drive are truly spectacular. Chapman’s Peak drive is considered to be one of the most scenic drives in the country; rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, huge boulders, the road waving along the ocean.
  Chapman’s Peak Drive
Must-stop places along the route –
Betty’s Bay – Beautiful white-sand beaches and Stony Point Penguins Colony with thousands of cute African penguins.
Muizenberg – The most popular surfing spot in Cape Town. Check out the colorful beach cabins, one of the popular Instagram spots; bright wooden cabins, white sand, blue waters.
Simon’s Town – Another spot to see African penguins on a small beautiful white-sand beach surrounded by the huge boulders.
Cape Point National Park – The stunning scenery, dramatic cliffs, hidden beaches, two lighthouses, many hiking trails and a popular spot marking one of the southernmost points of the African continent. You can spend hours exploring the Park, make sure to visit Dias Beach, to take the funicular to the Old Lighthouse, to walk to Cape of Good Hope and to the Tip of Africa.
Lighthouse at Cape Point | Flickr | Meraj Chhaya
Kommetjie – a small surf town with long sandy beaches and great waves.
Chapman’s Peak drive – there are several amazing look-outs along the route.
Camps Bay – The most expensive neighbourhood in Cape Town, with perfect white-sand beaches and ice-cold waters of the Pacific Ocean.
Evening – Have dinner at one of the restaurants at V&A Waterfront and enjoy another sunset in Cape Town. If you want something more unusual you can arrange a romantic dinner at The Cape Wheel. A 30-minute ride with stunning 360° panoramic views of the night city and a picnic basket – a very special way to spend the last night, of this 7 Day Trip to South Africa, in Cape Town.

I’m Esther Moorehead, a Canadian watercolor painter currently living in Charlotte, North Carolina.  For as long as I can remember, I’ve been an explorer; an adventurer; a wonderer at nature’s glory. My creative journey began while I lived in Northern Ireland as a child.  I fell in love with that land and sea, its tiny villages and beautiful people.
Laying down the background washes for Eileen Donan Castle
Exploring the rugged coast of Northern Ireland at the ruins of Kinbane Castle
I thrived on observation—whether it was something as everyday as the details of a dahlia in our garden, or as epic as discovering an ancient castle ruin on the cliffs of the sea.
Building up shadows and layers
Since then, I have lived in several countries, traveled all over the world, and can’t help but paint the places I have seen. This passion for exploration and an excitement to share what I find is what fuels my work as an artist.
West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, Maine, USA
Watercolor didn’t find me until after I had been teaching art for several years! I always admired it but I was intimidated, because it was so elusive; wild almost.  It had a mind of its own. I couldn’t control the results of my brushstrokes like I could with other mediums.
Big Ben and Westminster Bridge, London, England
But one evening after teaching a miserable 9th grade lesson on basic watercolor techniques, I was decidedly annoyed at myself for not having more ability or confidence. It was time to tame the beast!
So it began—trying, failing, learning, growing, trying again, failing again…you get the picture! Instead of being intimidated by how out of control I was, I loved it. A crazy combination of intense focus to be intentional with every brushstroke, yet relinquished control so the water and pigment can work its own magic!
My process grows with me. It adapts to my surroundings, my subject matter, my goals.  Sometimes, I sketch on location, but the majority of my finished paintings are completed in the studio (a fancy term for literally any free table space that can be claimed, depending on where I live!) using photo references (mostly my own).
Slow and steady progress on the Duomo in Florence, Italy
A Tale of Two Wonders: a magnificent natural landscape in Arizona and the architectural genius of human design in Florence, Italy
I’m super particular about painting on a clean surface that isn’t soiled or stained by unwanted pencil lines or eraser marks.  So I sketch and refine my drawings using layers of transparent paper until I’m happy with the design, then I transfer the final image onto watercolor paper using carbon paper.
Refining the drawing process to prepare for transfer onto watercolor paper
Playing with loose brushstrokes and colors!
Cold press, minimum 140 lb watercolor paper is my preference—the more texture the better! So far Saunders Waterford is my favorite brand to work with, but Arches is wonderful too. I use a combination of dry pan and liquid tube watercolors in a variety of brands, but right now Daniel Smith is winning.  There’s an array of brushes at my workspace, but really the 4 go-to’s are a #2 and #8 round, a ¾ inch flat, and a #6 quill.
One of the oldest buildings in Davidson, NC
Part of a recent series of local hotspots in Davidson, NC
After my second daughter was born, I stopped teaching but realized how badly I needed a creative outlet! I jumped on Instagram in 2017 under the name Glendale Studio (after the street I lived on in Belfast as a kid) really as an incentive to paint regularly in order to build more skill.  But as I started being able to sell my work online, I realized how much I wanted to grow my portfolio and create a steady income through art.
In the studio time seems to stand still.
Sometimes deciding on which colors to use takes longer than actually painting!
It’s a slow process because my kids are still young and I’ve made the decision to wait until they’re all in school before I really put the pedal to the metal. But so far, I’m loving the ride (and realizing how MUCH I need to learn about growing a creative business!).
Playing around with a variety of styles and subject matter helps prevent creative stagnation.
My paintings have now been exhibited in Canada and the USA in several galleries and shows and are housed in private collections all over the world, which is a dream come true!
Paris is always full of inspiration for me!
There are so many beautiful parts to my creative process of traveling, dreaming, sketching, refining, and painting. But by far the most rewarding part is when I can connect someone to a place in the world through my art so that they can relive a memory, remember a love, or find the courage to embrace their inner explorer.
