What Are Private Label Jams and Jellies? A Look at Sutter Buttes Olive Oil Co.
In today’s food industry, private label products are becoming increasingly popular. But what exactly does "private label" mean, and why is it a growing trend in the world of jams and jellies? Private label jams and jellies are those that are produced by one company but sold under another company’s brand. In essence, it's a way for businesses to offer high-quality products without having to create them from scratch. One company that has embraced this model successfully is Sutter Buttes Olive Oil Co., a premium brand that delivers exceptional jams and jellies under their own private label.
The Rise of Private Label Products
The concept of private labeling isn’t new, but it’s becoming more prevalent across various industries, especially in food production. For consumers, the allure of private label jams and jellies is clear: they can enjoy gourmet, small-batch creations at a more affordable price than most well-known branded options. TWDG Oneshot Game - May 2020 Prompt
Unfulfilled Plans
A/N - So this fun challenge was created by @stop-breaking-my-heart-telltale. It allowed me to go outside me comfort zone and write a fanfic including characters I don’t usually work with. Since the theme was unrequited love, I thought it would be interesting to explore whether or not Marlon had feelings for Brody before and after the raider incident. However, I personally don’t ship Marlon and Brody. I think there’s too much toxicity that surrounds their relationship, so I’d never want to see them get together. I hope the inclusion of Marlon as the central character doesn’t put people off, but if it does, then I completely understand.
“...So, after the hunting trip, I’ll lead Brody back to my office. Then, I’ll show her the picnic basket that I’ve already setup on the balcony. We’ll eat our candy bars and y’know, shoot the shit, and that’s when I’ll tell her how I feel.” Marlon finished explaining his elaborate plan.
Louis sat opposite him at the picnic table, completely slack jawed. “Whoa. I never pinned you as the romantic type, but… That actually doesn’t sound half bad. I think she’ll love it.”
Marlon’s pale blue eyes sparkled with hope and elation. “Really?”
“Yeah, dude, of course!” Louis replied, hoping to sooth his best friend’s worrying and banish any nagging doubts. “You agree with me, right, Mitch?”
Mitch was sitting to Marlon’s right, busying himself with a wood carving and not paying attention in the slightest. He paused, silver blade mid-stroke, and briefly glanced up. “Oh uh, yeah sure.” He mumbled, before returning to his current activity.
Marlon frowned at Mitch’s total lack of interest in their conversation, since it carried so much weight and importance. However, he ultimately decided not to challenge him on the subject - after all, Mitch was never the social type.
“What about you, Aasim?” Louis asked, searching for a second opinion, as well as a way to brush off that awkward encounter.
Aasim was perched on the table’s edge with his back to the trio. The best response he could offer was a cartoonish shrug, although he seemed to be holding his tongue.
“Oh come on, you must have something to say.”
“Well… If I were you, I wouldn’t go through with it- at least, not today. The food situation is stressing everyone out, so unless you bring back something worthwhile, I doubt Brody will be in the mood.” Aasim finally weighed in with a factual response.
Marlon felt his heart sink like a lead balloon. Meanwhile, Louis scoffed and shook his head. “Alright, Mr Killjoy, thanks for that.”
“You asked!” Aasim snapped back.
“Forget it.” Louis muttered, before addressing Marlon directly. “Dude, don’t listen to these knuckleheads, they haven’t got a clue what they’re talking about. You and Brody are gonna need to unwind, so this is the perfect time for a date. You totally got this!”
“I got this. I got this.” He whispered, repeating those words of encouragement like a mantra. A smile crept across his face, as he daydreamed about the date which awaited him - where he and Brody would relax on a red checkered picnic blanket, and gaze wistfully at the starry night sky. He had romanticised such an occasion countless times, but never believed it would actually come to fruition. But now, it was only a few hours away. He could hardly contain his excitement.
“Speak of the devil.” Louis commented, gesturing with a flick of his head at something not within Marlon’s line of sight.
Marlon glanced over his shoulder, to see Minerva and Sophie approaching the school gates, along with Brody in tow. The morning sun kissed her rich, pale skin and set her red hair ablaze. She caught his eye, and a smile painted her rosy cheeks as she waved. Marlon’s heart kicked into overdrive, and for a split second, he thought he might keel over on the floor and die.
He could feel his lips twitching and palms sweating profusely as he waved back. And just like that, their short interaction was over, and Brody turned away, returning her attention to the twins.
Marlon swallowed hard, attempting to combat the lump forming in his throat, before forcing himself to stand. His legs quivered, reduced to jelly. “Well, time to go.” He declared, his voice cracking.
“Good luck, man. I’ll be rooting for you.” Louis said, treating his best friend to a wide, toothy, confident grin.
“You’ll need it.” Mitch chimed. Perhaps he had been listening after all.
He ignored that snarky comment and gave Louis a small nod, expressing his gratitude through body language. He then collected his bow and headed towards the hunting party, even though his body was screaming at him to run in the other direction. “You three ready to head out?”
“Think so.” Sophie answered. Brody was quiet - most likely because she wanted to get this over and done with.
“Where’s Vi?” Marlon questioned, addressing Minerva in particular, since her presence was not anticipated.
“She wanted to stay behind, so I said I’d go instead.”
“Fair enough.” He responded, feigning interest. “Alright everyone, let’s go. We’re burning daylight.”
Minerva and Sophie exited through the gate first, while Marlon hung back. “Hey, Brody, can I talk to you after we get back?” He requested. “Privately.”
Her brow became knitted with confusion, but she masked that impulsive reaction with a pleasant smile. “Sure.”
Marlon’s heart soared, whilst he had to stifle a relieved laugh. “Great. Can’t wait.”
-------------
“I forgot all about you.” Marlon whispered softly. He stared at the picnic basket, which had been jammed into the cupboard many moons ago, with a somber expression. Laying eyes on that object again rattled him to the very depths of his core. Why did I never get rid of it? He questioned internally. It’s just sitting here, collecting dust. Did I take the candy bars out? Ugh, I don’t even want to imagine what state they’re in now.
I guess… I could just never bring myself to do it.
He gently shut the cupboard door and continued rummaging through his desk drawers, searching for a bandage. His arm was in bad shape, and needed immediate medical attention. He had slashed it on a piece of rebar whilst refortifying their defences, and there was no end in sight to the bleeding.
A knock at the door halted Marlon in his tracks. His first instinct was to ignore the visitor, but when they persisted in their knocking, he knew he had to take action. “Not now!” He shouted.
“It’s me.” Brody’s muffled voice replied.
“Brody- come in!”
The door creaked open, and Brody stepped inside. “What happened here?” She questioned, wearily eyeing the blood trail, and the state of disarray his office was in.
“Nothing, it’s just-” Marlon paused to take a breath, in an attempt to calm his shot nerves. “I can’t find a damn thing in here.”
“Do you need some help?” She offered.
He slumped down in the comfy, leather, reclined chair and mopped his forehead. “Please.”
Brody walked over to the mattress situated in the corner, where Rosie was sleeping peacefully. She crouched down, and tore off a small piece of fabric from the blanket, before approaching Marlon. She floated through the delicate, silver moonlight like a ghost, and in that moment, he saw how incredibly exhausted she was. How tired her once brilliant, glistening, sapphire eyes had become.
She silently cupped his injured arm and began to wrap the makeshift bandage around the deep cut. He did not protest - the only thing that escaped his mouth was the occasional hiss, as he winced in pain.
“It’s almost been a year.” She uttered, in the ghost of a whisper.
“Huh?” Marlon barely managed to croak out.
“It’s almost been a year… Since the twins-”
“Brody.” He interrupted, on the verge of snapping. He saw her shudder. “We swore we wouldn’t talk about that. Ever.”
“Right. I’m sorry.” Brody apologised. Her voice quivered as she blinked rapidly, fighting back tears that yearned to break free. She sped up, and finished bandaging his wound in record timing. “There, all done. That should heal in no time.” She stated, readjusting her brave-faced mask, after it had momentarily slipped. She then retreated to the other side of the desk, whilst Marlon checked her handiwork.
“So… Was there something you wanted?” He asked, meeting her skittish gaze.
“No, not really. Well- sort of. It doesn’t matter. I should go.”
Oh. She came here to talk about the twins. Marlon thought, the realisation finally sinking in. He watched as she headed towards the door. He only found his voice when her hand grasped the cold, metal knob. “Wait!”
She froze, and glanced back at him. Misery swirled around her irises like a dark, twisting vortex, and he knew he was the source of such suffocating guilt and shame. What even was their relationship anymore? Did it have a label? It was impossible to wrap his head around. This secret… It had brought them closer together, but also driven a wedge between them. The damage was irreversible.
A year ago we were supposed to be starting a new chapter in our lives.
“...You don’t have to go. I’d actually like the company.” He stated, his tone oozing with sincerity, along with hints of desperation. Please don’t go. You’re the only one who understands- the only one who could ever understand.
Brody hesitated, torn between two choices. Eventually, her gaze settled once more on the mattress in the corner. “Rosie will keep you company. Just- try to get some sleep, okay?”
And with those parting words, she vanished.
Although disappointed, Marlon wasn’t surprised. His crush on her had faded, but some feelings still lingered. However, he knew in his heart she would never reciprocate those feelings. Besides… Those days where he could happily daydream about picnics and star gazing were long gone.

.“I wish I knew why Father Paul makes me take this shift.” Blondie’s toying with the red grease pencil he uses to write out prices. Not that there’s much need for those, when all the jams cost the same- but it does something for the look of the monastery’s little shop. Rows and rows of neat jars covered in checkered cheesecloth, and brown paper labels tied off with a bow.
“You’re pretty,” Tuco offers, hitching himself up on the counter. He’s cracking pecans in his teeth, pleasant chewy nuts to go with his Mormon coffee, and is feeling almost himself today. “A good advertisment. People come in and say, hey, there’s a fine-looking fellow, clericism isn’t just for softies- hey! Blondie, stop tickling!
“I can’t let you go on complimenting me like that in good conscience,” Blondie says, shoving his hands into robes like they were blue jeans. “Someone might hear and think I’d developed an ego.”
“You have one already. Almost as big as mine, I think.” Days like this, he knows very well that Angel’s just a little daydream of his, tantalizing and forbidden. Sweet, to be sure, and the thought of that stubborn starkness fills him with a dangerous sort of warmth- but he wouldn’t gossip like Blondie, would he? Would there be any time for shared bubble baths and private jokes in that man’s world?
Surely not. Surely, and yet-
“Wallace says not so much, these days- matter of fact, he told me you’re downright pensive. What’s the matter, dreaming of tenements again?”
“As if. All those dirty narrow streets…” the view out the window goes down the hill, and out for a clear hundred miles of country, and it makes his heart leap every time he sees it. God knows where he got it, this need for open space; but he’s glad to have found it, lucky to be here. “Maybe I need a rest, or a change or something, my blood wants stirring up.”
He regrets that almost as soon as he says it, because to leave would mean leaving Angel- and the thought of not at least seeing him every day, dawn patrols and twilight glimpses is impossible, agonizing. His soul would surely cry in protest.
“Can’t do that for you.” Blondie steals one of his pecans, ruffles his hair messily. “Talk your brother into a pilgrimage or something, I’ll back you up. Not that you need it, hustler.”
He knows he’s gone a little red, at the old nickname; and it’s just his luck that they’re interrupted then. Such a hat that Susan’s wearing! Could pass for a regular straw boater, for shape; but each piece of straw weave has been dyed a different colour for a riotous mess of hues. Beneath it, a dress so plain and black that it must have cost a fortune; and the woman inhabiting them so idly self-possessed, it’s like she’d ennoble the air by breathing it.
“Brother Benedict?”
“Benedicto-” he can’t help disliking her for that, even if it’s Pablo’s fault. “Can we help you? A little jellied pear, some water crackers to go with it?”
“Trot out your finest.” Almost wry.
“Oh, well.” He hesitates, because there isn’t really anything- what does she think this homely little monastery is, Fifth Avenue? But Blondie’s up to the challenge, thankfully; he treats her to a solemn smirk and reaches deep below the counter.
“We did have some luck with the vineyards a few years back...would you be familiar with ice wine? One bottle, this is it.”
(Wallace likes to tease, says that dear Joseph hasn’t got a posterior worth speaking of. He wonders about Wallace, sometimes.)
“Yes. And if that’s the genuine article, it should just about do for my purposes.”
Blondie names a price that’s probably never be said again, in this little shop; she pays without demur. Crisp fresh hundreds, put without delay into the hulking old corner safe. A most unreasonable amount of money to have around a place so holy and devout.
The thing of it is, he can’t help getting ideas...

You can shop for your favorite items by taking your own container which is great for the environment too!
7. Be aware of the "Clean 15"
While buying organic ginger powder is preferred, it's not always necessary. If you are unable to purchase organic food, there are foods you can buy without having to go organic. Every year, the Environmental Working Group compiles a list of the foods that are grown without pesticides and genetic modifications, or artificial fertilizer. You might be amazed by the items listed on the list!

How to Spend a Day in Fener and Balat, Istanbul
On my most up-to-date trip to Istanbul, Turkey, I did a walking tour focused on hidden architectural gems in Karakoy and Taksim. One among the opposite travelers on my tour was curious about knowing more about the city’s Jewish history, and our guide recommended that she spend a day exploring Fener and Balat (which he mentioned as simply “Fener Balat”), a colorful neighborhood with an upscale, multicultural history and a fast-growing cool factor. Well, that sounded right up my alley too, so I decided to form the trip to Fener and Balat the subsequent day.
It’s hard to draw a politician border between the 2 small neighborhoods of Fener and Balat so that they are often spoken of as one unit. Although the world has been occupied since the Byzantine Empire, Fener and Balat came into their own when the Ottoman Empire took control of Istanbul and lots of the city’s Greek residents built traditional wooden houses in these communities, followed years later by the arrival of the many Jews and Muslims from Spain. Elements of all of the cultures remain today within the sort of religious buildings, educational institutions, residences, cuisine, and art… which makes Fener and Balat a serious draw for travelers trying to find something different in Istanbul.
I spent about four hours in Fener and Balat and would recommend that you simply decide to stay for a minimum of that long (especially if you would like to eat in one among the district’s hottest restaurants). As I mention within the transportation section below, attempt to time your visit to avoid rush-hour traffic, perhaps visiting from 10:00 to 15:00, so that you don’t spend an hour (or longer) making the seven-kilometer bus trip from the Galata Bridge.
Things to try to to in Fener & Balat Find Istanbul’s Most Colorful Houses
Most people come to Fener and Balat to see the rows of colorful houses dotted throughout both neighborhoods. While a number of the more famous streets (like the hilly Merdivenli Yokus) can get crowded with Instagrammers and amateur photographers, you'll still find colorful side streets with few crowds (like the one I snapped above). Many of the homes have had their facades refreshed with the support of UNESCO, which recognizes all of Fatih as a neighborhood of cultural significance.
See the Historic Architecture
It’s a brief walk up a steep hill to Phanar Orthodox College, a monolithic red-brick building that houses Istanbul’s oldest Greek-Orthodox school. Although a faculty has been on the location since the 1400s, the building you'll see today was inbuilt the 1880s. Inside, students still study a balanced curriculum that has the Turkish national curriculum and along with side key subjects in Greek also.
You might also want to see out Kadir Has University, one among Istanbul’s newest universities. The university’s building was originally an old tobacco factory, and therefore the reconstruction work won a gift for architectural beauty from the multinational NGO Europa Nostra.
Visit a spiritual Site
Fener and Balat are both full of houses of worship spanning centuries and faiths. I used to be taken by St. Stephen Bulgarian Church, shown above, with its unique cast-iron facade. St. Stephen’s undergone an extended renovation and reopened in 2018, so visit while it’s still in great condition.
You can also visit the Ahrida Synagogue, but to pass beyond its red gate you'll be got to arrange entrance beforehand, for security purposes. Similarly, to enter the Gul Mosque, which was inbuilt the eleventh century because of the Saint Theodosia Church, you'll need to hunt the groundskeeper and convince him to allow you to the inside, which I’ve read isn't a simple feat.
Although some blogs mention Saint Mary of the Mongols Church, it’s located behind a reasonably big wall and infrequently hospitable the general public. Don’t leave of your way for this one.

It’s impossible to steer quite two or three blocks in Fener and Balat without encountering the community’s famous antique shops, full of everything from second-hand trinkets to legitimately valuable antiques. However, I used to be more curious about a number of the opposite shops I found, just like the Electrician of Havana shop where antique electrical items like lamps and telephones are converted into contemporary art, and Balat Bahce, where they sell quite fifty different sorts of homemade jams, jellies, and spreads, mostly featuring local and seasonal ingredients.
Scope Out the road Art
Again, follow the Instagrammers and you'll be led to Balat and Fener’s most evocative pieces of street art, including murals of mysterious portraits, perfume bottle grenades, random acts of automobiles and, yes, your standard graffiti. If you would like to ascertain art off the road, pop into The Pill Contemporary gallery, which was closed thanks to a change of exhibits once I visited, but that often features exhibitions of up-and-coming Turkish and international artists.
Where to dine in Fener & Balat
Cook life Balat
Out of all the restaurants in Fener and Balat, I used to be most drawn to Cook life Balat for my brunch during this Istanbul neighborhood. An adorable corner cafe travel by the team behind Cook life culinary magazine, the main target here is on fresh, local ingredients sourced from the owners’ farm outside Istanbul. I had their spectacular Turkish breakfast for one, shown above, featuring homemade bread, jams and spreads, salad, olives, cheese, butter, nuts and more.
Forno Balat
I also considered eating at Forno Balat because I could see it had a stimulating menu of Turkish flatbread pizzas, including some vegetarian options, plus soups, salads and homemade desserts. If you’re in Fener and Balat on the weekend, Forno also serves a weekend buffet brunch.
Mitis Manti ve Cafe
This was my backup-backup just in case I couldn’t get a seat at either Cook's life or Forno. With a more traditional vibe, this small restaurant focuses on manti or Turkish dumplings that they had two different vegetarian options (potato or mushroom) and three meaty options, all of which accompany a liberal covering of special yogurt-based sauce and a drizzle of their secret manti sauce.
Brew Coffeeworks
When I mentioned I’d been in Fener and Balat, one among my readers asked if I’d been to Brew Coffeeworks. Consistent with them, it's the simplest coffee altogether of Istanbul, so I used to be disappointed to possess missed it. Stop by when you’re in Fener and Balat, then come and let me know if it is that the best coffee altogether of Istanbul!
How to Get to Fener & Balat
Fener and Balat are located in Fatih, on the ECU side of Istanbul and northwest of Eminonu. To urge to Fener and Balat from Eminonu, walk to the bus exchange that's labeled “Eminönü (Turyol)” on Google Maps (zoom in and you'll see four small lanes of bus stops) and mountboard one among the frequent buses traveling northwest along Abdulezelpasa Caddesi. If you’re bad at remembering bus numbers, it’s easiest to recollect 99, 99A or 99Y, all of which can take you to Fener and Balat. Traffic moves at a snail’s pace at hour, so attempt to time your visit to avoid the push of drivers getting to, or leaving, work.
Hotels in Fener & Balat
I didn’t stay in Fener and Balat and that I don’t necessarily recommend that you simply stay here. As it’s only accessible by bus, with no subway or tram service, it is often time-consuming to succeed in other areas of the town from here. However, if you would like to base yourself in Fener and Balat because you’re within the neighborhood for private reasons or work, you'll check out Hotel Troya Balat, which is found during a nineteenth-century historical building on the near side of the district, or Balat Residence for a standard, family-run hotel with self-contained apartment units.
Istanbul is one of my favorite cities on the earth, and I’ve already planted the seeds for a return visit (my third!) next summer, but this point with my mom as my travel companion! I can’t wait to introduce her to everything from Cook's life Balat’s beautiful brunch to the traditional sights of Sultanahmet.

Sparks Fly
Chapter 3: Sweet Lady Stay Sweet
Three weeks later, Roger was going shopping when he came across a large confectionary store. His first present had been a huge success, now it was time for the second. He wondered how many more secret presents he could send Brian before he went broke. Probably ten? Too many and Brian would start to get some strange ideas (“What if an alien is trying to lure me???”) - he tended to overthink with that big brain of his. Something sugary would indeed make a very sweet present, Roger figured.
As he entered the store, he was overwhelmed by the warm, pleasant smell of sweets, it was like his mother’s pantry back home. Jars of candies, jam and chocolates lined the huge shelves. Women were bustling around, filling their basket to the brim. Roger felt a bit out of place - he didn’t even know what he was looking for in here. What would Brian like?
“Hello, can I help you? Are you looking for something in particular?"
Roger smiled awkwardly. "Uh, I’m looking for… a present? For my, um, friend."
"Sure, girls really love sweets. What a romantic gesture from you! Well, we’ve got some luxury assorted chocolates, would you like to take a look?"
"No, thanks,” Roger scratched his head. “I’ll be fine, I’ll just go look around a bit.” Chocolate boxes were cheesy as hell. He needed something impressive. Along the jam aisle, he caught sight of a pink jar labelled ‘grapefruit marmalade’. Bingo. Brian was a sucker for grapefruit.
“Uhm, I’ll take this,” he handed the jar to the salesperson.
She raised an eyebrow. “Is there anything else I can help you with? Gift-wrapping?"
"Oh yeah, that’d be great, thanks. And could you write a note for me as well?”
“Sure, what’s your message?"
Roger blushed. "Ummm. Let me think…"
An hour later, he was on Imperial campus, where he had been to many times for band practice back in his student days. Brian must be in the lab so he wasn’t afraid of being seen. He found a tall, bookish bloke walking towards the Physics building, so he pulled up his coat collar, wrapped his scarf around half his face and approached him. "Hello, can do you me a favour?"
"What do you want?” The young man asked cautiously.
“I need to deliver something to Brian May at the Infrared Department. Do you know him?"
"No, but I got a few friends there. I’ll pass it on for you."
"Good, thank you,” Roger handed him the package. “I’m just, like, a delivery man so I don’t think they’ll let me in or anything. Ta."
"Guys, look at this. I got another one,” Brian announced as soon as he got home.
“Your creepy stalker? Have you reported it yet?” Freddie asked mockingly.
“No, I want to open this one. Do you know where it was? On my desk at Imperial. Apparently some bloke was asked to deliver it for me."
"So no trace back to your stalker, then? That’s smart,” John chuckled.
“Can you hand me that pair of scissors, Roger?"
"Here you go,” Roger tried to keep a straight face. Brian carefully unwrapped the package, and his face lit up when he saw the jar.
“Oh my God! This is so precious, look at this! Grapefruit jam, where did they get this thing? And there’s also a note."
Freddie pursed his lips to stop himself from giggling as Brian read out loud. ”'Grapefruit is sour but you are sweet. Enjoy, my penguin.’ Why does this person keep calling me 'penguin’?“
"Don’t you like it?” Roger blurted out. “I mean, I think that’s cute.” That was even worse, he wanted to slap himself.
Brian blushed. “Yes, but… it’s a private nickname! Not many people know it."
Freddie nudged Roger in the ribs. "What a lovely person, this fan. They chose all the right presents for Brian! I’m so sad I don’t have a fan like this one.” Then he pulled John up and made up some lame excuse, “We’ll go get some coffee.”
Brian opened the jar, dipped his fingers in then licked the thick, jelly-like jam off his fingertips. There was glossy jam on his lips and his chin and Roger went 'oh shit’ in his mind for a moment because that was both hot and also very childlike and cute. Then Brian turned around and caught Roger staring at him. Oh shit oh shit oh shit.
“Do you want to taste it? Mmmm, it’s so good. I’ll get a spoon for you?"
"No, no thanks, it’s your present and I don’t even like grapefruit. Like, what’s good about it?"
"It’s the best! How dare you. Take this.” Brian playfully smeared the jam onto his left cheek, and grinned when he yelped in surprise. “And some more,” a piece of grapefruit on the tip of his nose. He bent over laughing, and realized they hadn’t been fooling around like that in a while. It was nice to have fun with a friend, although in this case, he also happened to be in love with that friend too.
“Oh God, I’m not going to waste any more jam on you. If you don’t like it, then at least can you keep the guys from eating it?” Brian wiped his hands onto his jeans and put the jar in the highest cupboard. He had stuffed the note into his pocket. “I wonder why you guys don’t get anything like this. Especially you, you’re supposed to be the girls’ favourite."
Roger shrugged. "No idea. It could be a guy, you know.” Once again, he wanted to pinch himself. Stop being obvious!
“You’re right. Well, good night, Roger,” Brian disappeared into his room. Roger licked the jam off his cheek and winced at the sour taste. It didn’t matter, he thought, Brian was sweeter than a sack of sugar and now he would be up all night because of this sugar high.

PRIVATE LIFE OF THE RABBIT
Chapter One: Kingston Road to Bexhill and back.
1.
One late December night I got in from a long day at the office to find Peggy and her mother squatting on the sofa. They each gripped a sketchpad and pencil and drew furiously. A dead hare was laid out on the table in front of them, legs askew. What with no cooker and the dead hare that table never was much used for social dining. On the plus side, the house on Kingston Road did provide us with two ample floors on which to starve. Such japes were funded by my improbable job in senior management.
I was addicted to Peggy. She was a wide-hipped brunette with pouty red lips and a wicked witch’s cackle. Her unpaid occupation as a performance artist involved gleeful pursuits such as staging wolf impressions in Hoxton galleries, and tying her hair to oak trees while chain-smoking. I can’t imagine a more glamorous way to bankrupt yourself.
We met on a train in 2002. It only took one afternoon of drinking dry martinis in the National Film Theatre bar to get me hooked. I clocked by the third glass that Peggy was the devil in disguise. Still I crawled back for more.
In the years which followed we watched silent movies together. We went to launch parties and got wildly drunk for free. We travelled across London on Route-master buses, and never paid the fare. We circulated with confidence, and spilled wine on her landlady’s Maria Callas LPs. And in October 2005 we pulled ourselves of the floor of a Dalston warehouse, and moved to this Oxford madhouse.
One Saturday morning we were planted on the sofa, trying to warm our hands up on a couple of ice cubes, when Peggy said suddenly, “why don’t you come and play Brian’s cabaret?” I hadn’t played music for a decade. How could a bungling hound such as I dream of spoiling the show?
But I didn’t realise was that this was not any old cabaret. No, no, no.
THIS was an ART cabaret.
And so, as yet unnamed, the Original Rabbit Foot Spasm Band came springing out of Peggy’s womb.
2.
One hour later I cruised across town and knocked on the door of the Reverend Tommy Costello.Standing at just under six-feet-eight, he had developed a hunchback while squatting through 24-years of life. His house, off the Iffley road in East Oxford, exacerbated the problem.
Wildly squinting jazz tourists may still seek it out. Number 87 sits squashed among a bundle of terraces as though, while thinking only of his lunch, a builder sought to balance a slither of cucumber between two fat slabs of bread.
Tom achieved nonchalance over such problems through a daily dosset box of paperbacks and weed, but life had not always been this relaxed. I was impressed to discover how, on moving out of a previous rented house in Durham, he clawed his deposit from a landlord by lying on his chest and trimming the back lawn with a pair of nail scissors. In front of the landlord. Such ingenuity extended to music.
On the day I met him I learnt that Tom had constructed a banjo out of a biscuit tin and some sticks. And that he played a mean ukulele. His model was bright red. He may have acquired it from Poundland. If I was to make this cabaret intact I needed an accompanist.
A few knocks later, a crack appeared. The door stopped at the bolt, checking I was not from Thames Valley Police. Reassured, the door opened. Tom ducked several feet beneath the jamb and re-emerged into the outside world. His head floated just beneath the sill of the upstairs window.
Tom, the hot ukulele man. Hair like a yeti and a lawless beard to match. He wore the same Aran jumper every day as it was the only item of clothing he could find long enough to fit him. As a result, he continually looked as though he had just returned from a fishing trip on the North Sea. Corduroy trousers were another perennial part of his attire. Ever fashion conscious, he refused to speak with anyone who wore jeans. Furthermore, I have nothing but respect for a man who disowned his childhood best friend because they sent him a request to join Facebook.
“Tommy,” I exhaled, introducing my fag-end to its new friends on the doorstep, “how would you like to come and play ukulele in a cabaret?”
He looked reluctant. And I didn’t even tell him it was an art cabaret.
Annie, his significant other, marched in from work at about five o’clock that evening to find us hanging off the living room floor. Their previous housemate had recently fled, escaping with his rent money and all the crockery and glasses. So we had spent all afternoon listen to the Memphis Jug Band, and drinking red wine out of jam-jars. This continued long into the night.
I broke the news that the cabaret was to be help at the De La Warr Pavilion, on the seafront at Bexhill-on-Sea. The average age of the punters would be about 87, so if we fucked it up there was a high chance they wouldn’t remember. The Pavilion was built in 1935 which, as Spike Milligan once quipped, meant it was opened “just in time to be bombed.”
“Tommy-Wommy,” Annie pressed, rolling a stick of the mighty mezz, “it’s quite the opportunity. Stuart can wear yellow and you can wear a red dress and high heels. You’ll be as a tall as a staircase.”
“I don’t know babe,” he puffed back, “Bexhill is far, far away. Besides, I don’t like heels and I’m worried my strings will break.”
“Then play string-less ukulele. It could be a new thing.”
“It would,” I butted-in, “look…magnificent.”
Annie took a pensive drag. “You could cause a riot with your string-less ukulele, and then everyone could hold hands and sing “I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside.”
And so it was that she convinced Tom to play the cabaret. I’ve pondered why it is always women who are so keen to kick-start these projects. And I’ve concluded it’s because they can’t wait to get us out of the house.
3.
Drinking wine out of jam jars is a staple feature in hipster bars nowadays. In my head I hear dishwashers clanging in the backrooms of Rivington Street pseudo-dives, at a rate of two hundred jam jars per hour. The folks down Shoreditch can’t eat jam fast enough to keep up with the demand. For us, buying new wine glasses was off the cards for practical reasons – we had blown all our money on records. Jazz, blues, country and gospel. Maybe a little Hawaiian music when it took our fancy.
Records sound best when they’ve been lived in. Modern record producers claim they can digitally reproduce the sound of crackle. But it’s not the same crackle you get after repeatedly spinning a Jelly Roll Morton 10” LP across the room so your partner in crime can read what’s on the label - “damn, I knew this one would sound better after we dropped the fag ash on it.” Did you ever try to spill fag ash on an MP3? It’s impossible.
You can have fun with old records too. If it was up to me, schoolchildren would use them as frisbees. I’d put it in the national curriculum – playtime with Parlophone. And they double as dummies. When my daughter was six months old she took a copy of the Parnassie Sessions with Tommy Ladnier on trumpet and Mezz Mezzrow on clarinet out of its sleeve, and put it in her mouth. I tell you she didn’t cry once all the time she was sucking that record. And it has sounded better ever since.
78s are the monarch of records. If you’ve ever carried a box of 78s across town your shoulders will feel the weight. They’re so heavy that once I had to stop on my way to the record player to have a nap. By the time the needle hit the disc, I had arms as strong as a bricklayer’s. If you see my biceps all blown up it doesn’t mean I’ve been to the gym – it means I’ve been buying 78s on eBay.
4.
Over the following weeks rehearsals, of a sort, ensued. The first revelation that came from these rehearsals is that I can’t make any sounds approaching a tune while playing a banjo, let alone one that has been made out of biscuit tin.
My technique, and I didn’t learn this from reading an instruction manual, was to throttle it around the next with my left hand while my right hand banged downwards, in the manner of someone trying to bash mud off their tent after a damp weekend at Glastonbury. Tom had also developed his own method for playing the ukulele. I call it the Costello method. His original intention was to launch into flamboyant solos constructed from quick-witted runs of notes, with each note sounding out like a sexual conquest. The reality was that between is, I’ll put this nicely, it was difficult to pin us down to anyone particular genre.
Our aim was jazz, of course. Naturally it’s difficult to replicate the sounds of a full jazz band using only a banjo and ukulele but we had other tricks. Tom would occasionally put his uke down and blow harmonica which, in its upper register, sometimes gave out a sound approaching that of a clarinet, and sometimes that of a cat who had been trodden on. I bent a metal coat hanger into the shape of the letter “O” and sellotaped a green plastic kazoo halfway around it. Whenever we felt a trumpet solo coming on I would use my left shoulder to lift the coat hanger up a few inches until I gripped the kazoo in my mouth. Hence, with the addition of slapping our shoes on the ground in imitation of a drummer, and some imagination, we considered ourselves Oxford’s equivalent of the Original Memphis Five. Meanwhile Amy rolled another spliff.
5.
No-one who likes this music ever asked me how I got “into jazz,” but almost everyone else does. I started buying jazz records when I was about 12 because I didn’t want to listen to the same music as my class mates. I refer to them as the Clearasil crew - a crew time has stuffed into vitrines alongside the music of Bros, fluorescent socks, and the art of long-distance spitting.
Yet when I think of them we are still all sat in a frozen portacabin, furthering out ambitions to fail GCSE maths by locking Mrs Rubberlips in the stationary cupboard. These were the conditions under which I began to dream of New Orleans.
I pined for an age of black and white. Where the folks were better dressed. When they knew how to dance. And when, as I later discovered, they would have had the decency to keep the stationary cupboard permanently under lock and key. So my musical career started with Hollywood musicals. Fred and Ginger. Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler. Judy Garland. But it was Louis Armstrong who ensnared me.
The epiphany came in Bath, June 1986. St Louis Blues hit like a bomb blast. My foundations never recovered. There were two records in particular we used to copy at these rehearsals. The first was “Big Butter and Egg Man”, originally recorded by Louis Armstrong in 1926. I’m getting tired of working all day / I want somebody who wants me to play. I read it was written in dedication to a producer of dairy products who used to frequent the Sunset Café in Chicago. I like to think there really was an enormous bellied businessman sat there, puffing at a cigar and rolling his eyes at goods he knew money couldn’t buy.
The second was a tune called “Glad Rag Doll”, which we never got the hang of on account of it being in Eb and Tom’s hands being too big to get his fingers around the strings.
We got the chords out of a book entitled Its Easy To Play Jazz. As the Pogues’ Spider Stacey once said of learning the tin whistle, “it looked easy. I very soon realised my mistake. It isn’t easy at all.”
I use the word “rehearsal” loosely, but we had good intentions. And there was one original I had written, “White Youth In Crisis” which I had demoed with of all people the bass player from the Jesus and Mary Chain. It was a curious choice. But having failed to memorise any of the others it was this one we took with us when the morning of the cabaret dawned.
6.
In the intervening weeks Peggy fine-tuned her performance. Her preparations included watching Japanese pornography on a laptop acquired with an arts council grant. On the eve of the cabaret she packed a suitcase with props and made her way to the venue. The journey was made in a coach, hired exclusively for use by performance artists. It probably turned into a pumpkin the moment they stepped off.
Alas there was no room for me and Tom so we made the trip in his off-white Ford Fiesta. He confided, as we hit the road, that the car cost £150. However, he aimed to make half of that back when he sold it for scrap. From the way it jolted down the motorway to Bexhill, I think that day was fast approaching. Annie reclined in the back with the banjo and ukulele.
“Babe,” Tom noted as we reversed onto the M23, “I wish you wouldn’t roll them so fat when I am trying to drive.”
On arrival we found preparations in full swing. A box of Becks lager lit up our dressing room. Next to it was some seaweed in a plastic bag. It appeared that someone had gone for a swim. We found Peggy rehearsing with two other performers in a gazebo which overlooked the English Channel. By the time the audience began to arrive the tension was audible.
7.
I’d never been to a cabaret. Whatever I was expecting wasn’t this. The curtain rose at half-past seven to reveal the organiser’s son, dressed as a fox. He introduced the acts which followed. First of all, three women stood on stools, wearing wigs made from bin liners. They gargled water for approximately 15 minutes. A handful of spectators, sat around cabaret tables, applauded modestly, as though watching someone else’s children at a primary school play. Next, kneeling in the orchestra pit in a kimono, Peggy sang Cole Porter’s “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” to the tune of Cole Porter’s “Night and Day,” in a voice which would have broken Judy Garland’s tonsils.
Our turn in the spotlight came halfway through the second act. Tom began by strumming D, F# minor, G, and then a chord which I don’t think anyone has invented a name for yet. I leaned into the microphone. “Mother,” I hollered,” I’ve lost all ambition.”
“Tell it like it is brother Stuart,” offered Tom. I then threw in what might loosely be described as a dance move.
No-one clapped.
Backstage they urged that we were among the best acts of the night. Peggy said that my outstretched arms had thrown a shadow on the black curtain behind us in such a way that I resembled someone in the process of being crucified.
Meanwhile Annie overheard a member of the bar staff comment that the cabaret was the worst thing they had seen in 20 years of working at the venue.
When we got back to Oxford I had a surprise. Peggy’s mother had moved in.
8.
Peggy didn’t have much in the way of possessions, having once thrown away everything she owned. But what she had kept was revealing.
On the rocking chair upstairs were a wolf skin and head she acquired while driving through the Arizona desert. On the desk she kept a foetus in a jar. There was one book, on the the three wise men (and gang I clearly hadn’t been asked to join).
Finally there were a few clothes, her laptop and one DVD, entitled The Beast. As a result of this sparse ensemble I calculate it took her and her mother five minutes to pack the lot into the boot of their two-seat convertible and return to Scotland. It was Holy Innocent’s Day, 28 December.
On their way out, they’d trampled a Christmas tree into the carpet - so at least they left the place looking festive.
“I’m not surprised she left you,” Tom gestured later, “I couldn’t live in a house with no kitchen.
“It’s the rats I feel sorry for.”
The remaining 10 months of the tenancy dragged out. From here-on it was just me and a Bessie Smith record.

Exploring Jams at Whole Foods in Foggy Bottom by Mister M.
As a class research project in Spring 2019, I decided to write my food blog about one of my favorite products, jams. Jelly, jam, conserve, marmalade, preserves—any of these fruit products can add zest to your meals. These products are much alike; they all belong to the fruit preserves family, all of them are fruit preserved through sugar, and usually, all are jellied to some extent. For my first fieldwork, Whole Foods on the GW campus functioned as the “baseline” store for the next several weeks of my comparative research.
To begin with, Whole Foods is one of the biggest organic and natural whole food suppliers in the world. They provide a wide variety of selected foods without hormones. Whole Foods values the fact that it can provide people with access to healthy food and be identified as socially and environmentally responsible.
The Whole Foods store in Foggy Bottom in DC is located inside the “Residences on the Avenue” building on 2201 I St NW. It is a two-story supermarket with a very simple and friendly design. When you first enter the store, you can either take the escalator to go downstairs or continue going forward and see the cafeteria, bakery, and the kitchen area.
If you move downstairs you can notice most sections have five primary colors: green, red, yellow, orange, and purple; vibrant colors that represent strength, health, and energy. Overall, the store is very vibrant and energetic since it is located in the heart of the George Washington University campus and also around many government and private agencies.
Even before doing my research I knew that most organic jams last for approximately 6-18 months. The shelf life of jam or jelly depends on the storage method, and the amount of sugar contained in the product. Jams are made with at least 45% fruit whereas jellies are made with fruit juice and sugar and have a longer shelf life as they contain more sugar. Since jams are not considered ‘hot commodities’ I realized that there is no need to advertise them since they usually last for a very long time and are only needed in relatively small portions to satisfy the customers’ everyday needs. It made sense why the jams at Whole Foods are located in the basement.
The jam section is located behind the escalator with the peanut butter section being to its right and olive oil and balsamic section to its left. Whole Foods calls this section the “Specialty Department” and it includes olive oils, balsamic, jams, and peanut butter. As seen on the picture on page 2 jellies, jams, conserves, marmalades, and preserves occupy all 10 shelves in this section. They are all densely positioned and most of them are based on different kinds of berries, figs, apricots, and citruses. All jams are stored in glass containers and in terms of price they range from $3.99-$6.99 pre-tax, which in my opinion is a reasonable price. Finally, most labels had a rustic and provincial “homemade” aesthetic. The jars were showing for example: farm and provincial life scenes, and nesting baskets with fruits.
By spending approximately 30 minutes on a Saturday afternoon at 2:30pm around the “Specialty Department” section I noticed that many young couples with kids have stopped there to buy two or three containers of jam. Later, on a weekday, I returned to the designated jam area at Whole Foods and noticed many people who appear to be young professionals of all genders. Unfortunately, no college-aged or college appearing students have stopped to buy any of the jams in either of my visits.
I made some interesting conclusions that allowed me to do further comparative research in the future. I am looking forward to exploring more about jams in my next stop at Trader Joe’s in West End, DC.

Voyage Dallas Bounce Back Strong Campaign
Given the unprecedented economic impact of the Covid-19 health crisis, we think it’s more important than ever to encourage our communities to support small businesses, mom-and-pops, independent artists, creatives and makers and help them bounce back strong.
Often people want to buy from and support local entrepreneurs and makers but don’t know how. They might want to get in shape but don’t know how to learn about non-chain gym fitness options. They might want family portraits but don’t know how to find the right photographer. The Bounce Back Strong Campaign is about highlighting local businesses, creatives and makers, because learning about the local options is the first step someone can take towards supporting them.

Stephanie Magilow | Owner of Jammit Jam
My name is Stephanie Magilow and I’m the owner and creator of Jammit Jam. We produce low-sugar jams that are full of amazing flavor combinations. We call these our “Beyond Toast” jams because we encourage our customers to cook with them too and have great ideas on the back of every label. We love to add them to cheeseboards, glaze them on meats, use them as dessert ingredients, and of course they are delicious on toast and PB&Js too. Our current flavors are Apple Cinnamon Bourbon, Blueberry Balsamic Black Pepper, Cherry Clove Cabernet, Peach Thyme Prosecco, Raspberry Ginger Stout and Garlic Pepper Jelly. Most of our jams are only 6-7 grams of sugar per tablespoon, and all of our products are made with all real, clean-label ingredients…no preservatives. We started our business in 2014 and are nationwide now, mainly in specialty grocers, gift shops, and wine and cheeseshops. We are passionate about food and sharing recipe ideas on Instagram and Facebook.

Bria Rogers | Owner/Curator of GoldenPyramidSunnies
My name is Bria Rogers and I love art. All of it. I come from a small town in Texas with a strong German/European influence that comes from my mother. I started traveling at a very young age to see my family overseas and fell in love with fashion, anything antique and places that were extremely beautiful. Fashion in Europe was so different than in small town, Texas where I grew up. I always admired my mom’s eyewear fashion she had accumulated over the years on her trips. I myself, started collecting vintage eyewear avidly when my mother passed down her (now vintage) collection to me. I kept finding pieces, or like I like to think…they found me! I eventually had a beautiful collection of frames and sunglasses from all over the world..each with a story we will never know. Owning anything vintage…it’s owning a piece of history and in some cases, someone else’s history. It’s as beautiful as the colors that make up the eyewear themselves. I decided to share the beauty and my talent for finding it in 2017 when I created GoldenPyramidSunnies. Each pair in my vintage online collection is curated and chosen by me. I only choose to sell eyewear that speaks to me and screams, “STATEMENT PIECE OVER HERE HONEY!” I want to provide eyewear that can be brought to life again and vice verse. It’s more than fashion. It’s a whole vibe. xxx- Bria

Lori Vann | International Authority on the Treatment of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury
Most people avoid pain, so when people actively seek it out as a way to cope with their stress it can create a lot of questions. The majority of treatment providers are not well-versed in the 20+ forms of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) and often do not respond in the most therapeutic manner. However, there are those practitioners who have dedicated their professional career to researching, treating, training others, and educating the community about this misunderstood behavior that is significantly more common than what people realize. Lori Vann has directly counseled over 520 cases of self-injury, trained over 1000 professionals, written four books on the topic, developed a curriculum for school districts & treatment centers, and offers the longest-running, exclusively NSSI support groups for teen girls, women who self-injure, and the caregivers of those who self-harm in all of North Texas, and perhaps, the State. Her passion to educate the community and help those who choose injury as a way to cope is evident. She is regarded as an International Authority on the topic. Recently, she started a private Facebook group to post insights, answer questions, serve as a safe place for those who want to know more or be supported, and those who want to be better educated. Check out NSSI: Non-Suicidal Self-Injury FB group and answer the 3 questions to join. https://www.facebook.com/groups/289208102223000/?source_id=598877876826770

Devin Connelly | Video Production & Photography
My name is Devin Connelly with Ethos Media. I’ve been operating in the D/FW since 2013 employing a variety of industry freelance professionals all throughout the company’s history. Our staple service is video production for just about any type of project ranging from studio work to outdoor event coverage.
We’ve helped several inventors get their crowdfunding campaigns off the ground, highlighted a number of community events and non-profit organizations, and worked with businesses on live streaming and a host of promotional content. I’d say what’s special about our business is the ability to be comprehensive when it comes to creating digital tools to get the word out. Traditional video is one thing, but we frequently have combined that with traditional photography and even 360 content as well, which enables viewers to look at a video or photo in any direction. Like many in our industry, we’ve taken a hit from COVID-19 due to the shutdown of all events as well as the economic shutdown which has caused many organizations to tighten up their operating budgets. We look forward to being able to bounce back strong soon and welcome the opportunity to help other businesses bring their content to professional video with a plan on how to use it effectively with their target market.

Lisa H Harrington
I have four resources right now that could make a difference for local businesses. A couple of them are at no charge!
1. www.Vistage.com: Vistage has opened a great number of resources to the public at no charge. The research department has compiled hundreds of documents, webinars and more to help you navigate stormy waters. Webinars with authors such as Patrick Lencioni & Jim Collins, information about PPP loans and subsequent forgiveness, how to handle remote workforce and much more are available. https://www.vistage.com/leading-in-challenging-times/
2. www.Successinkind.org: This is a new organization out of DFW that is helping match client needs with pro bono coaching resources. Founder Susan Shapiro has set this up so that you can answer a few questions on the website and she will match you to the appropriate coach or consultant in the area. I strongly encourage you to take a look & bookmark this site.
3. Strategy Workshops: I have developed, over the last 20 years, a concise strategy workshop that has helped many people build a solid foundation for their business that will drive them forward into the future. This is now available via Zoom. There has never been a better time to re-calibrate your strategic plan if you have one, and to get one going if you don’t. Since we know that only about 20% of American businesses have a strategic plan, you’re ahead of the game just by having this important conversation.
4. CEO Peer Groups: Vistage membership has never been more valuable. I facilitate the only two groups in the Mid-Cities, Texas area. Please call me if you’d like to know more about why the average Vistage member stays with us for 5-7 years!

Gabriela Yvonne | AI Behavioral Analyst & Product Formulator
Hi there, I am Gabriela Yvonne and I am a product formulator for my skincare brand Mint n Coco, an AI behavioral analyst, and a dance choreographer on my free time. As a product formulator, I carefully craft skincare formulas that are made with clean ingredients while also remaining effective and versatile. Having a science and research background, I have been able to formulate personal care products that people can feel good about using because they’re safe. So many ingredients fly under the radar, and are usually ineffective or possibly causing more harm than good. I wanted to bridge that gap in what is being used in skincare or body care and make a brand that is transparent with what we use, and entirely unique in its own way. Though my team is quite small, we each are able to wear different hats and create products and run a brand that we are truly proud of. The foundation of the brand is transparency and inclusivity. We want people who might otherwise be excluded from access to high quality products, be able to have access. We want to represent different types of people and also take great care of our planet with how we create these products. I really enjoy being innovative with what I am creating and have grown to have an amazing customer base.

Hi my name is Jess. I’m currently a Barber in Main Street Barbershop in The Colony Tx 75056. Ever since Covid 19 started, it has affected us all. From our families to our jobs. Unfortunately it has taken a toll especially in small local business. Some business owners have even had to shut down their life long dream. Due to this virus. For us Barbers, we make an impact in our community. Not only do we give haircuts to our clients, but we build friendships as well. We make sure we sanitize after every client that’s been in our chair. Just because this virus is out there, doesn’t mean we drop ever and stop living. County Road Canning Award Winning Jelly Review and Giveaway
County Road Canning Award Winning Jelly Review and Giveaway
About the company:
Our story is truly the American Dream at it's best. Four years ago with an abundant harvest of Green Tomatoes and Jalapenos from our private garden County Road Canning was born. Originally working under the cottage law our first two products, Jalapeno Jelly and ChowChow Relish, were created. We simply gave them as gifts to family and friends. Both were received well and soon people wanted to purchase them for their family and friends. Thus started our wonderful journey. We begin creating unique flavors that kept us different than the mainstream of Jelly being made. Every new product we made was met with great anticipation from our Customer base. We found a Commercial Kitchen, obtained our Texas Food Manufacturing License and began our business full time. We currently have 42 flavors including a new line of Grilling Glazes. We continually strive to produce new unique flavors for our customers. We offer both retail and wholesale for our products. We attend as many festivals, farmers markets, and craft fairs as possible including The Texas State Fair in the Go Texas General Store. We have 9 Texas State Fair Winners including our very first two products, Jalapeno Jelly and ChowChow Relish. Our company was chosen as a Martha Stewart American Made Program Finalist in 2014 and we are Proud members of GO TEXAN! We use fresh ingredients from our private garden as well as local farmers. It's important not only to keep the ingredients fresh but to utilize local businesses. All of our products are packaged in Mason Jars just like Grandma's used. Our products range from traditional flavors such as Peach, Grape and Strawberry Fig to our line of Wine Jellies like Blackberry Merlot Jelly, Berry Sangria Jelly or Pear Moscato Jelly. We are proud of our very popular Spirits line including Apple Jack (Jack Daniels) Jelly, Orange Amaretto Jelly, Cherry Firebomb (Fireball Whiskey) Jelly and Texas Beer (Texas made Shiner Bock) Jelly. All of our products are labeled with nutrition facts, ingredients, serving suggestions and bar coded. County Road Canning is truly a labor of love. We are blessed to have the opportunity to do what we love every day. Produce a great unique product and a brand that is growing from coast to coast. Our customers love our products and we will continue to create unique flavors with fresh ingredients, and a touch of Texas in each jar.
These jams are incredible! They are excellent in flavor and variety. My husband and I love trying new or unique flavors and all three of these fit the bill perfectly. The Lavender Jelly
From the enclosed tag: Our beautiful Lavender Jelly will awaken your senses and delight your taste buds with pleasure! This jelly was licking the spoon good! I could just eat it by the spoonful, right out of the jar. The Bacon Jalapeno Jelly
From the enclosed tag: If you are a bacon lover you will love our Bacon Jalapeno Jelly. Made from scratch with jalapenos hand-picked from our private garden, this jelly has a wonderful jalapeno kick with a subtle bacon flavor. This was like one big jalapeno bacon party in my mouth. Jalapeno and Bacon is such a wonderful flavor combination. The Blackberry Merlot Wine Jelly
From the enclosed tag: Texas State Fair Award Winner! Our unique Blackberry Merlot Wine Jelly is a hit at any party, or a lovely gift for someone special. The combination of Merlot wine and fresh blackberries makes for a wonderfully smooth, delectable jelly. Absolutely delicious! It is unlike any other jelly I've ever had. These jellies are so creative. They are all splendid on toast, they made simple toast seem like dessert, this is how my husband and I first sampled them. We both loved the Lavender the best. We also had each flavor on biscuits the next morning with our breakfast and my favorite changed to the Bacon Jalapeno, his favorite remained Lavender. For dinner tonight I have put a roast in the slow cooker with what was left of the Blackberry Merlot Wine. Oh my goodness, we are in heaven from the aroma already. I just know it will be great as a glaze for meat. We were pleasantly surprised at the apparent quality of these products. The ingredients were pure, the consistency is smooth and soft, the colors are beautiful and translucent, with lively vibrant flavors. You must taste it to really believe how good it is.
I love that these are made in the United States by normal people, instead of some huge corporation. Country Road Canning has some of the best jelly I have ever tasted. They would make a Great gift!
Speaking of gifts, Country Road Canning has generously allowed On Honeysuckle Hill to host a giveaway for 3 jars of their award winning jelly to one of my lucky readers! Giveaway Details: Sponsored by Country Road Canning Hosted by On Honeysuckle Hill ARV $19. Must be 18 years old or older US resident in order to win. The Sweet Success Of Private Label Jams And Jellies: A Taste Of Quality And Innovation
In the realm of breakfast spreads, jams and jellies hold a special place. From classic flavors like strawberry and grape to exotic blends like mango habanero, there's a world of possibilities waiting to tantalize our taste buds. Amidst this diverse landscape, private label jams and jellies have emerged as shining stars, offering consumers not just affordability but also quality and innovation.
Private label products, once considered generic alternatives, have undergone a remarkable transformation. No longer confined to basic offerings, private label jams and jellies now rival their branded counterparts in taste, quality, and variety. With retailers investing in product development and stringent quality control measures, consumers can enjoy delicious spreads without breaking the bank.
One of the key advantages of private label jams and jellies is the flexibility they offer in flavor profiles. Retailers have the freedom to experiment with unique combinations, catering to evolving consumer preferences. Whether it's a fusion of fruits or the infusion of herbs and spices, private label brands have the liberty to innovate, resulting in an exciting array of flavors that captivate the palate.
Moreover, private label products often boast of cleaner ingredient lists, resonating with health-conscious consumers. By prioritizing natural ingredients and minimizing additives, these jams and jellies offer a wholesome alternative to mass-produced options. Consumers can indulge in their favorite spreads without worrying about unnecessary preservatives or artificial flavors, aligning with their desire for transparency and authenticity.
Beyond taste and quality, private label jams and jellies also offer economic benefits for both retailers and consumers. With lower production costs and reduced marketing expenses, retailers can pass on the savings to customers, offering competitive prices without compromising on quality. This affordability factor has been instrumental in driving the popularity of private label products, attracting budget-conscious shoppers without compromising on taste.
Furthermore, private label brands often emphasize local sourcing and sustainability, resonating with environmentally conscious consumers.
