Exploring Jams at Whole Foods in Foggy Bottom by Mister M.

As a class research project in Spring 2019, I decided to write my food blog about one of my favorite products, jams. Jelly, jam, conserve, marmalade, preserves—any of these fruit products can add zest to your meals. These products are much alike; they all belong to the fruit preserves family, all of them are fruit preserved through sugar, and usually, all are jellied to some extent. For my first fieldwork, Whole Foods on the GW campus functioned as the “baseline” store for the next several weeks of my comparative research.

To begin with, Whole Foods is one of the biggest organic and natural whole food suppliers in the world. They provide a wide variety of selected foods without hormones. Whole Foods values the fact that it can provide people with access to healthy food and be identified as socially and environmentally responsible.

The Whole Foods store in Foggy Bottom in DC is located inside the “Residences on the Avenue” building on 2201 I St NW. It is a two-story supermarket with a very simple and friendly design. When you first enter the store, you can either take the escalator to go downstairs or continue going forward and see the cafeteria, bakery, and the kitchen area.

If you move downstairs you can notice most sections have five primary colors: green, red, yellow, orange, and purple; vibrant colors that represent strength, health, and energy. Overall, the store is very vibrant and energetic since it is located in the heart of the George Washington University campus and also around many government and private agencies.

Even before doing my research I knew that most organic jams last for approximately 6-18 months. The shelf life of jam or jelly depends on the storage method, and the amount of sugar contained in the product. Jams are made with at least 45% fruit whereas jellies are made with fruit juice and sugar and have a longer shelf life as they contain more sugar. Since jams are not considered ‘hot commodities’ I realized that there is no need to advertise them since they usually last for a very long time and are only needed in relatively small portions to satisfy the customers’ everyday needs. It made sense why the jams at Whole Foods are located in the basement.

The jam section is located behind the escalator with the peanut butter section being to its right and olive oil and balsamic section to its left. Whole Foods calls this section the “Specialty Department” and it includes olive oils, balsamic, jams, and peanut butter. As seen on the picture on page 2 jellies, jams, conserves, marmalades, and preserves occupy all 10 shelves in this section. They are all densely positioned and most of them are based on different kinds of berries, figs, apricots, and citruses. All jams are stored in glass containers and in terms of price they range from $3.99-$6.99 pre-tax, which in my opinion is a reasonable price. Finally, most labels had a rustic and provincial “homemade” aesthetic. The jars were showing for example: farm and provincial life scenes, and nesting baskets with fruits.

By spending approximately 30 minutes on a Saturday afternoon at 2:30pm around the “Specialty Department” section I noticed that many young couples with kids have stopped there to buy two or three containers of jam. Later, on a weekday, I returned to the designated jam area at Whole Foods and noticed many people who appear to be young professionals of all genders. Unfortunately, no college-aged or college appearing students have stopped to buy any of the jams in either of my visits.

I made some interesting conclusions that allowed me to do further comparative research in the future. I am looking forward to exploring more about jams in my next stop at Trader Joe’s in West End, DC.

week 2 of year 2

bro so weve been having never ending mpu meetings and uhhh we're executing it this weekend... 13-14th august 2022. has it been this long since we had started planning omg.

anyways, todays f2f meeting in particular was pretty fun. after yesterdays shenanigan after our pbl and slight miscommunication where Kepas thought the girlies were trying to help me confess to him....yeah i thought today would be a bit awkward btwn him and i. cuz it was momentarily yday lol. but today... we were closer than ever does that make sense?

idk back in sem 2 we were pretty.. we were friendly but like thered be distance n all like propoer big gap ig. but now, were much friendlier.

but one thing ive realised right, we tend to make eye contact a lot and id catch him looking at me multiple times. but the thing is he doesnt like immediately look away whenever i catch him so idk if mans is just zoning out or what. but also, whenever i catch him looking at me... what does that say about me cuz mf im stealing glances at u too LMFAo

also, my fav thing is how he says my name. new addition, i think eversince he hung out more with gorjas, he's also started calling me mai sometimes. regardless, i like how he says my name.

also we took a break earlier during the meeting and we went to the convenience store together, yoomin eventually came but theres that.

and then there was that whole ordeal about the groupings for media literacy....

anyways, i have work tomorrow as i only have one physical class and attendance isnt compulsaroy.. slightly regretting it cuz i actually have a lot to do before we go on our trip. and we r leaving on friday. friday mornign i have to go to the embassy. and immediately after, we're heading to perak. gg lah.

gonna try get a bit of stuff done tonight. i took a nap after i got home earlier.

work starts at 1030-6pm. heading to ioi afterwards to grab some stuff from the durgstore and im alsio gonna get more bleach n hair dye to commemerate getting over haziq fully (cuz i dont feel anything at ALL anymore, in a postive way! like i dont get sad, i dont pond over what ifs, i dont contempalte texting him, sad songs dont sound sad anymore) and to commeratrre pu rholiday, and the start of year 2. thinking of goin blue but maybe plum red purple ???

you should do no vigorous exercise and should avoid any significant physical exertioon ,lifting or straining for a minimum of 3 weeks after your surgery ,as the activity could disrupt your wound haeling and cause bleeding . Plan on taking it easy .Although yur nose will not feel painful while healing ,it is still suseptible to injury .Be careful not to bump it or squeeze it.

Recovery Timetable :

Day 1: Return home . use cool compresses for 24 hours . Some swelling and bruising,mild discomfort . Changes mustache dressing as needed Day 2: 2-3 maximum bruising and swelling . Day 5-14: external sitches removed or dissloving . Internal nd external nasal dressing removed by Dr.Ducic . Bruising going way . Week 2-4 : Much of swelling has begun to go away . Breathing better. 1 year enjoy your final result

Recovery after septoplasty alone is as follow :

DAy 1 : return at home . Nasal stuffiness is main problem . Day 2-5 : Nasal stuuffiness is main problem . Day 5-7 : internal nasal splints removed by Dr.Ducic . stuffiness and nasal congestion much better. Day7-10 : slightly worse nasal congestion . Day3-4 : Nasal breathing much improvd.
