They're often expected to carry out "wife-like duties", such as cleaning their cell, being available for sex, bringing them things, buying them stuff, and, in some more severe cases, even going as far as helping cover for any crimes committed while in prison, putting money in their account, participating in crimes with them while in prison, etc. The prison wife/husband is expected to be loyal and subservient in order to stay in the dominant partner's good graces.

The Things I’ll Never Tell You

I hate you for the lonely nights without you. I hate you for the constant longing that encompasses my every move. I hate you for only allowing me to hold your hand if it’s through the scratched glass. I hate you for telling me “I love you” for the first time through a fifteen minute recorded phone call. 

I hate you for making me miss you so much. 

I hate you for making me write this- for allowing me to love you so fully that I would never tell you these things in case they may injure your heart in any way. 

Because oh how I love you.

I love you despite the mistakes you’ve made, I love you despite the fact that the visiting room is freezing and you are only two inches away but I still can’t feel the smoothness of your skin because of the god forsaken glass between us. I love you enough to go through the god forsaken pat down searches- even though I despise being touched. I love you so much that anytime I light a candle and ask for aid from my ancestors- I always pray that somehow you will get released; somehow you will come home to me sooner.

I’d do anything to have your hand in mine. 

Just holding my hand.

I miss you. 

Yet I was never given the chance to love you before this mess was created.

And somehow I hate you even more for that.
