Selling your merch and shipping from home with Fourthwall
I've been selling @shiftythrifting Junk Boxes - our curated secondhand mystery boxes - since 2017 using different platforms with different levels of success. I moved to Fourthwall in 2022 and my teeny tiny business has only grown since then! FW is free to use and you get ALL the money from your home sales save for the credit card processing fees. I don't miss the fee structure from our previous hosts, so I thought I'd write up a little guide on how easy it is to get started.
Things you need to start shipping from home:
A scale, and it doesn't need to be an expensive or large one! Even a kitchen scale works for small stuff.
Packaging and packing materials for the product(s) you're selling.
Access to a post office and/or a printer.
Funds set aside for postage. You'll get this money back with your Fourthwall payout when the month rolls over.
(Optional but handy) A ShipStation account.
Make yourself a store if you haven't already. You can sell print on demand, digital stuff, and your own inventory in one place but today we're talking about selling from home, so add a product and pick the middle option.
You can customize everything about your product on this page, from adding size and color variations, the materials used to make it, size charts, inventory, and more. Get an accurate weight of what you're selling in its packaging and add that here. Hit save and you have your first listing. Gonna be selling a variety of products? You can duplicate the listing with the meatball menu! Change the name, photos, and anything else that needs changing and have your second listing up in a couple minutes.
Didi protip: I like to put people's reviews right in the listing. Lots of photos help sell your product, but there's nothing like a positive review from fans!
Fourthwall's Collections feature lets me put my Junk Boxes in their own little section where I can set them to hidden or mark them sold out if I get sick or am on vacation. This lets me easily turn the self-fulfilled part of my store off while folks can still purchase print on demand and digital stuff and sign up for memberships.
Didi protip: If you are in the US, the US postal service will pick up your outgoing packages free of charge on any regular mail day. Just set up a pickup on USPS.com!
When you've made your first sale, you can either make the label yourself or connect directly to ShipStation through Fourthwall's app integration. That's brand new and I love it so far. My labels pop up in ShipStation about 24 hours after a purchase, giving people a little window of time to adjust their order or make changes before I ship it.
At that point, all that's left is handing it off to the postal carrier of your choice! Boom, you're done!
A final note from me, I moved ShopShifty to Fourthwall so I could have one address for ALL my merch instead of splitting it between Patreon, a print-on-demand store, and the Junk Box store. It's proven to be the best choice I've made in years and has saved me a ton of money in marketplace fees, Paypal's cut, and web hosting charges. This has genuinely been the easiest way to sell my merch!
#fourthwall#I wouldn't praise anything like this that I didn't absolutely love#and I love fw#I'm proud our lil shifty made partner#now I help other people set their stores up

Sticker Cutter Research
I was looking into getting a sticker cutting machine, and I decided to start by looking into cricut which is a well known brand. I had a look at what models they had than their feature etc, but what I was most concerned about was their software. Printer companies like to lock you into a defacto subscription to support hardware you don't really own, and as I was to discover, cricut are operating in a similar way.
The cricut software is online-only*. To cut your own designs you need to use their software to upload your art to their server. There's no way to cut a new design without a logged-in cricut account and an internet connection. At one point in 2021 they flirted with limiting free accounts to 20 uploads/month but backed down after huge community backlash, as far as I can tell.
The incident spawned several community efforts to write open-source firmware for cricut hardware. Some efforts were successful for specific models/serial numbers, but require cracking open the case and hooking in to the debug contacts to flash the chip; not exactly widely accessible. Another project sought to create a python cricut server you can run locally, and then divert the app's calls to the server to your local one.
I restarted my search, this time beginning with looking for extant open-source software for driving cutters, and found this project, which looks a little awkward to use, but functional. They list a bunch of cutter hardwares and whether they're compatible or not. Of those, I recognised the sihouette brand name from other artists talking about them.
I downloaded the silhouette software to try like I did w the cricut software, and immediately it was notable that it didn't try to connect to the internet at all. It's a bit clunky, in that way printer and scanner software tends to be, but I honestly greatly preferred using it to cricut's sluggish electron appâş. Their software has a few paid tiers above the free one, adding stuff like sgv import/export/and reading cut settings from a barcode on the input material. They're one-off payments, and seem reasonable to me.
This is not so much a review, as sharing some of the research I've done. I haven't yet used either a cricut or a silhouette, and I haven't researched other brands either. But I wanted to talk about this research because to me, cricut's aggressively online nature is a red flag. Software that must connect to a server to run is software that runs only at the whim of the server owner (and only as long as it's profitable to keep the server up). And if that software is the only thing that will make your several hundred dollars worth of plastic and (cheap, according to a teardown I read) servos run, then you have no guarantee you'll be able to run it in the future.
Do you use a desktop cnc cutter? What has your experience been like with the hardware and software? Do you have any experience from home printers with good print quality and user-refillable ink cartridges?
* Cricut's app tried to connect to more than 14 different addresses, including facebook, youtube, google analytics, datadoghq.com, and launchdarkly.com. Launch Darkly are a service provider that help software companies do a whole bunch of things I'm coming to despise, for example, they offer infrastructure for serving different features to different demographics and comparing results to control groups. You know how at various times you've gotten wildly different numbers of ads than your friends on instagram? They were using techniques like this to work out how many ads they could show without affecting their pickup/engagement rates. Scummy stuff.
âş Electron apps are web-pages pretending to be applications. They use heaps of ram, tend to have very poor performance, and encourage frustrating UI design that doesn't follow OS conventions. Discord's app is a notable example of an Electron app

Yes to all of it. We oldies remember the days when we actually owned the programs we used instead of renting them off of the websites. Because that's what it is...we are forced to rent and keep paying rent on shit like Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator (and even our own damn simple functionality of connecting our computers to the internet. I was horrified to find that I couldn't just connect without the fucking cloud shit saving every little thing that I did ("OneDrive" SUCKS SO MUCH!).) As if we don't pay enough rent as renters, or even homeowners who RENT the fucking equipment in order to get internet service (with the fucking rental fee for the fucking modem).
This is fucking greed
It's FUCKING GREED.
My 81yo father is a graphic artist (as well as a microbiologist and botanist) and he's complaining that his Photoshop doesn't work now. I told him that he needs to download the legacy CS2 (or 5 or whatever it is) and use that for free since the Adobe mfs are charging people rent now. CS2 is what I use. I OWNED THE DISK. Anyone can find the program online somewhere, find an old password crack, and get in.
When I was dirt poor and just getting my first computer out here on the West Coast, it came with a shitty Adobe program that was LIKE Photoshop; not as extensive (PhotoDesign? I forget what it's called now), but it still had layers...it was kind of like MSPaint but with layers and 50% more functionality. It was somewhere between Paint and Photoshop, but it worked just fine bc I could create the same things that I could if I had PS.
I wrote some pretty raunchy ABC Daytime Soap fic back in 1999 (the sex in there would put everything in Afterburn to shame). And I mean stuff that WOULD get me on the antis Wanted Posters. I used that shitty program to make the headers (yes, my fic had headers BACK THEN). I don't remember what website hosted them but it was one that accepted adult-oriented NSFW things/fic...it was an NSFW web host, if I recall I was formatting and FTP'ing it all and had a little website. I was even chatting with Catherine Hickland about getting her own website up and running because I was such a fan boy and back then it wasn't too weird to communicate directly with celebrities (I emailed Kate Mulgrew in 1997 because I found her Paramount address somehow, and she freaking responded to me đ). Cat had no idea I was writing dark smut though, thank the gods. But anyway, I made all my headers, buttons, character bios, etc. with the free program that came with the printer and the headers looked no different in quality than the headers I make today. 1999 or 2024, just give me a simple program with layers and fonts and I'll make it work.
Ignorance is a product of laziness, not limitation. (Thanks, Cairo.)
Download legacy programs that you can get to work. Use them, and stop paying rent to The Man.
It should be illegal to require that any device or software connect to the internet just to run. I shouldn't need to log in with microsoft to open any of their programs on my local computer. All games should be playable without access to an online server. All media you pay for should be downloadable to local disk as a raw file and if they don't like that because they know you'll share it and upload it, tough shit. They took your money already, they'll live.
#on technology#corporate greed#greed#adobe greed#adobe photoshop#adobe illustrator#computer programs#old school#run with us rebels#i just realized HOW much lost fic of mine there is out there#i wrote all my children and one life to live smut from hell#those are lost now as are my x-files fics#good luck finding either bc i don't even have the hard copies anymore or hard drive copies of the soap stuff

Understanding the Core Switch: The Backbone of Your Network
In the complex web of modern digital infrastructure, few components play as crucial a role as the core switch. Often referred to as the backbone of a network, the core switch is pivotal in ensuring seamless connectivity and efficient data transfer across all devices within an organization. Let's delve deeper into what makes the core switch so integral and why its role is indispensable in today's interconnected world.
A Core Switch is a high-capacity device that sits at the heart of a network, connecting different segments (like distribution switches) and providing a centralized point for managing and directing network traffic. Unlike access switches that connect end-user devices such as computers and printers, the core switch handles massive volumes of data traffic at incredibly high speeds. This makes it vital for supporting the overall performance and reliability of the network.
Key Functions and Features
High Performance: Core switches are designed to handle large amounts of traffic with minimal latency. They typically operate at speeds of 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps) or higher, ensuring that data flows smoothly and swiftly through the network.
Redundancy and Resilience: To prevent single points of failure, core switches often feature redundant power supplies, cooling systems, and network interface modules. This redundancy is critical for maintaining network uptime and reliability.
Quality of Service (QoS): Core switches prioritize network traffic based on predefined policies, ensuring that mission-critical applications receive the necessary bandwidth and resources to operate efficiently.
Scalability: As businesses grow, so do their networking needs. Core switches are scalable, allowing organizations to expand their networks seamlessly by adding more switches or upgrading existing ones without significant disruptions.
Security: Core switches play a crucial role in network security by implementing access control measures, enforcing policies, and detecting and mitigating potential threats to the network infrastructure.
Why is the Core Switch Important?
Imagine a busy highway system where traffic needs to flow smoothly without congestion or delays. The core switch acts as the main intersection that directs and manages this traffic, ensuring that data packets reach their intended destinations quickly and efficiently. Without a robust core switch, network performance could suffer, leading to slow data transfer speeds, increased downtime, and frustrated users.
Conclusion
In conclusion, while core switches may not be as visible as end-user devices or as glamorous as cutting-edge applications, their importance cannot be overstated. They form the backbone of any modern network infrastructure, providing the necessary foundation for communication, collaboration, and data exchange in today's digital age. Investing in a reliable core switch is not just a matter of technological necessity but a strategic decision to support the growth and success of your organization's IT ecosystem.
Whether you're upgrading your current network or planning a new deployment, choosing the right core switch is crucial. It's not just about finding a device that meets your current needs but one that can adapt and scale alongside your organization's future requirements. Remember, in the world of networking, a strong core makes all the difference.
Thank you for reading! We hope this article has shed light on the vital role that core switches play in keeping our networks running smoothly and efficiently.

Printing Security | ZĂźs Weekly Debrief May 10, 2023
Printing Security ZĂźs Weekly Update
Welcome to the latest edition of ZĂźsâ blockchain and Mainnet weekly update! We will take a look at all the updates that have been happening over this past week. We will also discuss why printing security is so important for keeping your systems safe, plus check out our review of the top five alternatives for Amazon S3 Web service that you should keep an eye on. Letâs get started!
Mainnet Update:
We currently have 12 pull requests (PRs) under review and 13 issues in progress. The remaining 40 issues are minor and mainly related to gosdk, 0box, and system tests. We anticipate resolving these issues within a few weeks. Our load testing is progressing smoothly, and we plan to test all applications simultaneously to evaluate their performance.
Additionally, we have made significant progress in addressing the critical MPT bug. We can now reproduce the bug in just one day, compared to several days previously. As a result, we anticipate resolving the issue soon.
Our mobile and desktop Apps for Bolt and Vult will be available on the app store within the next two weeks. After that, users will be able to seamlessly switch to the live network on Mainnet. The stability of our web applications has also improved, with only a few remaining changes required for Blimp and Chimney in the next few days.
Storm of the Week:
The Importance of Printing Security:
In todayâs digital age, printers and, multifunction devices are frequent targets for cyber-attacks, making it crucial for businesses to take proactive measures to secure their printing infrastructure. As Saswata Basu, the CEO of ZĂźs, highlights in a recent article in DPS Magazine, âIf the cloud is hacked or breached, malicious and false content can be printed and delivered to the people. False information could be hidden in the content body without being noticeable, and no one will suspect a data breachâ.Â
Decentralized storage systems offer a promising alternative to centralized cloud storage as they provide increased security and resilience against cyber-attacks while enabling businesses to have better control over their data. By distributing data across a decentralized network, businesses can protect their data against cyber-attacks, including those targeting printers connected to decentralized storage systems.
Moreover, with encryption and smart contracts, decentralized storage can prevent unauthorized access, providing secure and private data storage environments. Additionally, they can offer increased resilience against cyber attacks as data is distributed across a network of nodes, rather than a centralized server.
As businesses increasingly adopt decentralized storage systems, it is essential to prioritize printing security within their cybersecurity strategies. By implementing secure printing solutions, access controls, and regular updates, and using decentralized storage solutions that prioritize security and privacy, businesses can protect their data and systems from potential cyber-attacks while controlling their data better.
Blockchain Updates:
Last week, the blockchain team focused on debugging the MPT issue while fixing load test issues. The good news is that progress is being made in fixing the MPT issue. Just yesterday, it was discovered that the MPT nodes had changed unexpectedly, which led to the value stored in a specified path being unable to be found. The nodes of those miners who could find the value were not changed. This is definitely a bug in MPT, so more logs were added to track the place where the node could be changed.
Before deploying the code, the team located one place in merging state changes that could change the node and lead to key != node.GetKey(). The places for syncing nodes from remote and syncing block states from remote were also examined. They should have validated the nodes, so they may not affect the MPT. The team will monitor the logs over the next few days to get closer to fixing the MPT bug.
Dev team is fixing load test errors
In the meantime, the dev team is fixing load test errors, which helped speed up the reproduction of the MPT bug. Previously, they needed to wait about two days before encountering the MPT issue, but now it can be seen in about 3-4 hours, and it may be even faster if they do load tests frequently. The main issues fixed in the load tests are:
Insufficient transaction fee errors on submitting txns have been fixed.
Insufficient balance to pay transaction errors on submitting txns have been fixed.
Failed to send transactions due to incorrect miner state has been fixed. This fix is in the 0chain miner end. Miners will return an insufficient balance to pay the fee if they detect that the client does not have sufficient balance to pay the fee. However, they check the LFB to get the balance, so if the client pours tokens in round 100, but LFB is in 99, the miner will return an insufficient balance error. To fix this issue, they will only examine the clientâs balance when the clientâs nonce + 1 equals the transaction nonce. Otherwise, they would just let the transaction pass through.
More filter cases for submitting transaction errors have been added, such as connection is reset by peer, resp_is_500, EOF.
Cancel_allocation cases have been added to trigger allocation removal from blobber cases. They also stopped creating an allocation with full blobbers to have a spare blobber for updating allocation to add and remove blobbers. These can also trigger the remove allocation from the blobber.
In addition to debugging and locating the MPT issue, the team closed 26 PRs on the 0chain repository. These included:
Saved rewards only if the miner existed in the network.
Fixed the mint nonce overwrite issue.
Merged transactions with the same hash when writing to event DB.
Moved view-change tests.
Fixed negative open challenges in the event DB.
Fixed a nil pointer error during authorizers retrieval request.
Fixed a broken pool table.
Filtered getBlobbers and getValidators for is_killed and is_shutdown.
Integrated smoke tests.
Captured all errors on transactions.
Updated the initial states file for blobbers and validators.
Fixed a unit testing script failing to run 0chain.net/smartcontract/dbs/event tests.
Added new metrics state and events computation times.
Fixed/handled kill shutdown for aggregates and snapshots.
Completed tokenomics suite.
Added txn fee table.

Course Learning Assessment #2 CLO #1 â Describe how goals, constraints, incentives, and market rivalry affect economic decisions. CLO #2 â Analyze demand, supply, equilibrium prices, and price elasticities as a quantitative tool to forecast changes in revenues. CLO #3 â Evaluate alternative ways of measuring the productivity of inputs and the role of the manager in the production process. CLO #4 â Assess the economic trade-offs associated with obtaining inputs through spot exchange, contract, or vertical integration. CLO #5 â Investigate the conditions under which a firm operates as perfectly competitive, monopolistically competitive, or a monopoly. CLO #6 â Explain how beliefs and strategic interaction shape optimal decisions in oligopoly environments. CLO #7 â Identify examples of networks and network externalities, and determine the number of connections possible in a star network with n users. CLO #8 â Evaluate and present the economic basis for limit pricing, and identify the conditions under which a firm can profit from such a strategy. Analyze a competitive situation or industry practice in a 4 to 6 page, APA formatted written paper. You should choose a topic early on in this course. All papers must be strategy papers, meaning they must be about firms. However, there is a great deal of flexibility in the choice of topic.  Step 1 First, choose an industry, based on interest in the industry. Examples of industries range from advertising to zoos, and include digital watches, private jets, diapers, over-the-counter cold and flu formulas, photographic film, automobiles, airlines, football, romance novels, dating services, banana production, or pre-stressed concrete, computer printers, pagers, business schools, used cars sold over the web, movie theaters.  Step 2 Having chosen the industry, you will need a question or issue on which to focus. Such questions could be broad (What strategies are most likely to sustain profitability?) or narrow (Should firm X build a new plant? Where?). Good questions encourage you to think strategically, and thus should include the likely responses of rival firms to any hypothetical actions. Plan to include your question in the topic proposal. A different approach is to choose a story about the behavior of a firm from a newspaper or other source, and research this story. For example, the defense contractor Lockheed-Martin announced a friendly takeover of Northrop-Grumman, and then later dropped the plan after the Department of Justice filed an antitrust complaint. This story contains a dozen potential paper topics. How is the defense industry organized? Why did they want to merge? Why did the DOJ want to block the merger? Choose a topic in which you are interested rather than one that looks easy. Topics that look easy can be treacherous and unpleasant if they are boring. Step 3 Develop your written response. An important aspect of business communication is the elimination of the extraneous. Supporting exhibits are not counted in the page total. Using a few well-chosen exhibits is a better strategy than many irrelevant exhibits. It is important to provide references for facts you rely on in the analysis. The paperâs focus should be on analysis, with industry description provided to support that analysis. A common mistake is too much description, too little analysis. Do not choose a situation from a case reading from this or another class. Do not revise a paper you wrote for another course as a project without discussing it with me â it would have to be a new paper to be approved. This project is intended for you to perform hands-on strategic analysis. If you were handed a project to analyze a strategic situation by the CEO of your company, what would you hand back?  Successful CLA #2s Include: When you have collected a great deal of information and begun to rough out your topic, run through this list of tools and ensure that either they are used well, or arenât relevant. Five Forces Entry

The Printer Could Not Connect To Web Services
You may want to perform a print job, but it takes a very long time before the document is printed. Or that the router canât even find your printer. This is a common problem. But donât worry, we have the solution.
Whatâs the problem?
Printers and other devices sometimes spontaneously want to be disconnected. As a result, you can no longer print carefree. The printer could not connect to web services but with the IP addressâs network settings (TCP/IP network).
The printer may (since an update) automatically connect to the network through a WSD port. Web Services for Devices (WSD) automatically searches for your printer and assigns an IP address to it. But when a printer is rebooted, for example, it may suddenly be associated with a different IP address, causing a delay.
Every device has an IP address, and there are two ways to capture the IP address for your devices connected to your network:
A static IP address: you set this manually and will not be able to change
A dynamic IP address (via the DHCP server): this is automatically assigned by your router to your device for a certain time. A certain range (scope) is defined with IP addresses where the router chooses an IP. For example, the range is from IP address 50 to IP address 150. This only considers IP addresses within the range that the router has already assigned.
The problem usually lies with the automatic recording of a dynamic IP address. If another device is also automatically assigned an IP address, for example, when someone connects to your Wi-Fi network, it may get the IP address that your printer had. This creates confusion, and your printer can no longer be easily found. In addition, this results in a slow connection because the correct IP address has to be found or even no connection.
READ MORE: How to work when your printer Would not Print
What is the solution?
Giving a fixed (static) IP address to your printer will always remain the same. However, be careful not to accidentally grab an IP address that falls within the DHCP range of the DHCP server because it can just assign it to another device.
You can change the domain of your DHCP server and the IP addresses in your router. These settings are slightly different per router. So take a good look at which router you have and just Google: Router settings + the name of your router.

servers
servers
A server is a computer or system that provides resources, data, services, or programs to other computers, known as clients, over a network. In theory, whenever computers share resources with client machines they are considered servers. There are many types of servers, including web servers, mail servers, and virtual servers.
An individual system can provide resources and use them from another system at the same time. This means that a device could be both a server and a client at the same time.
Some of the first servers were mainframe computers or minicomputers. Minicomputers were much smaller than mainframe computers, hence the name. However, as technology progressed, they ended up becoming much larger than desktop computers, which made the term microcomputer somewhat farcical.
Read More Initially, such servers were connected to clients known as terminals that did not do any actual computing. These terminals, referred to as dumb terminals, existed simply to accept input via a keyboard or card reader and to return the results of any computations to a display screen or printer. The actual computing was done on the server. Later, servers were often single, powerful computers connected over a network to a set of less-powerful client computers. This network architecture is often referred to as the client-server model, in which both the client computer and the server possess computing power, but certain tasks are delegated to servers. In previous computing models, such as the mainframe-terminal model, the mainframe did act as a server even though it wasnât referred to by that name. As technology has evolved, the definition of a server has evolved with it. These days, a server may be nothing more than software running on one or more physical computing devices. Such servers are often referred to as virtual servers. Originally, virtual servers were used to increase the number of server functions a single hardware server could do. Today, virtual servers are often run by a third-party on hardware across the Internet in an arrangement called cloud computing. A server may be designed to do a single task, such as a mail server, which accepts and stores email and then provides it to a requesting client. Servers may also perform several tasks, such as a file and print server, which both stores files and accepts print jobs from clients and then sends them on to a network-attached printer.
How a server works
To function as a server, a device must be configured to listen to requests from clients on a network connection. This functionality can exist as part of the operating system as an installed application, role, or a combination of the two. For example, Microsoftâs Windows Server operating system provides the functionality to listen to and respond to client requests. Additionally installed roles or services increase which kinds of client requests the server can respond to. In another example, an Apache web server responds to Internet browser requests via an additional application, Apache, installed on top of an operating system.

When a client requires data or functionality from a server, it sends a request over the network. The server receives this request and responds with the appropriate information. This is the request and response model of client-server networking, also known as the call and response model. A server will often perform numerous additional tasks as part of a single request and response, including verifying the identity of the requestor, ensuring that the client has permission to access the data or resources requested, and properly formatting or returning the required response in an expected way.
Types of servers
There are many types of servers that all perform different functions. Many networks contain one or more of the common server types:
File servers
File servers store and distribute files. Multiple clients or users may share files stored on a server. In addition, centrally storing files offers easier backup or fault tolerance solutions than attempting to provide security and integrity for files on every device in an organization. File server hardware can be designed to maximize read and write speeds to improve performance.
Print servers
Print servers allow for the management and distribution of printing functionality. Rather than attaching a printer to every workstation, a single print server can respond to printing requests from numerous clients. Today, some larger and higher-end printers come with their own built-in print server, which removes the need for an additional computer-based print server. This internal print server also functions by responding to print requests from a client.
Application servers
Application servers run applications in lieu of client computers running applications locally. Application servers often run resource-intensive applications that are shared by a large number of users. Doing so removes the need for each client to have sufficient resources to run the applications. It also removes the need to install and maintain software on many machines as opposed to only one.

DNS servers
Domain Name System (DNS) servers are application servers that provide name resolution to client computers by converting names easily understood by humans into machine-readable IP addresses. The DNS system is a widely distributed database of names and other DNS servers, each of which can be used to request an otherwise unknown computer name. When a client needs the address of a system, it sends a DNS request with the name of the desired resource to a DNS server. The DNS server responds with the necessary IP address from its table of names.
Mail servers
Mail servers are a very common type of application server. Mail servers receive emails sent to a user and store them until requested by a client on behalf of said user. Having an email server allows for a single machine to be properly configured and attached to the network at all times. It is then ready to send and receive messages rather than requiring every client machine to have its own email subsystem continuously running.
Web servers
One of the most abundant types of servers in todayâs market is a web server. A web server is a special kind of application server that hosts programs and data requested by users across the Internet or an intranet. Web servers respond to requests from browsers running on client computers for web pages, or other web-based services. Common web servers include Apache web servers, Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) servers and Nginx servers.
  Database servers
The amount of data used by companies, users, and other services is staggering. Much of that data is stored in databases. Databases need to be accessible to multiple clients at any given time and can require extraordinary amounts of disk space. Both of these needs lend themselves well to locating such databases on servers. Database servers run database applications and respond to numerous requests from clients. Common database server applications include Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, DB2, and Informix.
Virtual servers
Virtual servers are taking the server world by storm. Unlike traditional servers that are installed as an operating system on machine hardware, virtual servers exist only as defined within specialized software called hypervisor. Each hypervisor can run hundreds, or even thousands, of virtual servers all at once. The hypervisor presents virtual hardware to the server as if it were real physical hardware. The virtual server uses the virtual hardware as usual, and the hypervisor passes the actual computation and storage needs onto the real hardware beneath, which is shared among all the other virtual servers.
Proxy servers
A proxy server acts as an intermediary between a client and a server. Often used to isolate either the clients or servers for security purposes, a proxy server takes the request from the client. Instead of responding to the client, it passes the request on to another server or process. The proxy server receives the response from the second server and then replies to the original client as if it were replying on its own. In this way, neither the client nor the responding server needs to directly connect to each other.
Monitoring and management servers
Some servers exist to monitor or manage other systems and clients. There are many types of monitoring servers. Several of them listen to the network and receive every client request and server response, but some do not request or respond to data themselves. In this way, the monitoring server can keep track of all the traffic on the network, as well as the requests and replies of clients and servers, without interfering with those operations. A monitoring server will respond to requests from monitoring clients such as those run by network administrators watching the health of the network.
Server structures
 Read More
The concept of servers is nearly as old as networking itself. After all, the point of a network is to allow one computer to talk to another computer and distribute either work or resources. Computing has evolved since then, resulting in several types of server structures and hardware.
Mainframe or minicomputer (AS/400)
You could say that the original servers, mainframe computers, and later, minicomputers, handled almost all computing tasks except the interaction with the user through a screen and keyboard, which was left to the client system.
Computer hardware server
The next major wave of servers included computer-based servers. In many respects, these servers were nothing more than larger, more powerful desktop computers. Such servers were generally more expensive and held far more memory and disk space than most client computers. Each server was still a self-contained unit with its own motherboard, processor, memory, disk drives, and power supply. Servers like this were often warehoused in air-conditioned rooms called server rooms, and were later bolted into racks for better storage and accessibility.
Blade servers
The original computer server hardware was large and stored in racks that could hold hundreds of pounds. Over time, however, faster means of connecting hardware resulted in parts of the server being extracted from a single self-contained device. By removing hard drives, eliminating internal cooling, and the ongoing miniaturization of computing parts, servers were eventually reduced to a single thin server known as a blade server. While still stored in racks in server rooms, blade servers are smaller and can be replaced more easily.
Combining servers
Even before virtualization, servers were being extracted from the standard model of a single server operating system installed on a hardware machine. Technology, such as network-attached storage, removed the need for a server to have its own storage. Other technologies, such as mirroring and clustering, enabled pieces of hardware to be combined into larger, more powerful servers. Such a server might consist of several blades, several attached storage devices, and an external power supply, and each piece could be swapped out for another while the server was still running.
Virtual servers
Virtual Servers still require hardware, but that hardware now runs a different process known as a hypervisor. In some cases, such as Microsoftâs Hyper-V, a full operating system continues to run on the hardware itself. In other cases, so-called bare-metal hypervisors can be installed directly onto server hardware. In both instances, the hardware itself is often spread across an array of blade servers, networked storage, and power supply, resulting in an environment where it is impossible to tell where any individual server ends and another begins.
 server operating systems
Microsoft Windows servers
An argument can be made that Windows for Workgroups was Microsoftâs first server operating system. In that version, certain computers could be set to share resources and respond to requests from clients, which made them servers by definition. Microsoftâs first real server operating system was Windows NT. Its 3.5 and 3.51 versions ran on many business networks until Microsoft released its Windows Server line that continues to exist today. The most current Windows Server version is Windows Server 2016. This version supports numerous applications and databases as well as a hypervisor that allows virtual servers.
Linux / Unix servers
The other major player in server operating systems is the Linux/Unix realm. There are multiple versions and flavors of Linux/Unix including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Debian, and CentOS. As an open-source operating system, Linux is very popular as a web server, often with the Apache web application server installed.
NetWare
Read More
Although no longer made, NetWare was a major player in the server software space as the client-server era was ramping up. Eventually, NetWare moved its server operating system to a Linux-based kernel and named it a Novell Open Enterprise Server (OES).
Cloud servers
Virtual servers hosted on a third-party infrastructure on an open network, such as the Internet, are called cloud servers. There are numerous cloud server providers these days, including Googleâs Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure, and IBM Cloud. However, the main pioneer of corporate cloud computing was Amazonâs AWS platform. It originally started using spare capacity of Amazonâs own servers and networks, but AWS now allows customers to create a virtual server nearly instantly and then adjust the amount of resources that server may use on the fly. Today, a server can be nothing more than the data of physical hardware that consists of multiple processors, disk drives, memory, and network connections. But, even now, a server is still just a system that responds to a request from a client.

Orbi Home WiFi System
What's a Wi-Fi System?
Wi-Fi System are half breeds of sorts. They offer a simple method to cover your home in Wi-Fi without the requirement for extra wiring, range extenders, or passages. For a few, setting up a passage is not feasible, as it requires running links. Reach extenders are remote and genuinely simple to arrange, however their sign yield is ordinarily half as solid as the sign coming from your switch.
The most recent yield of Wi-Fi System uses expansion hubs, or satellites, to expand your Wi-Fi signal. A portion of these System use network innovation, where the satellites speak with one another to give inclusion all through your home, however the Orbi switch utilizes a committed Wi-Fi band to speak with its satellite. The greatest benefit that Wi-Fi System have over range extenders is that the satellites are all essential for a similar arrange and give consistent network as you meander all through the house, and needn't bother with any setup or the executives. Most reach extenders, then again, make an auxiliary Wi-Fi network that requires some level of the board and should be signed in to for Wi-Fi access. All things considered, you normally have more power over your organization when utilizing a switch/extender arrangement.
Design and Features
The Orbi framework accompanies a switch and one satellite; they are indistinguishable in appearance and are encased in a white, delicate touch walled in area that resembles a somewhat crushed chamber. At 8.8 by 6.7 by 3.1 inches (HWD), they are fundamentally bigger than the hexagon-molded Luma parts (4.1 by 4.6 by 1.1 inches) and the square Eero segments (4.7 by 4.7 by 1.3 inches). While not ugly, they unquestionably don't offer the smooth feel of the Ubiquiti Amplifi HD, the Google OnHub, and the Starry Station, which are all intended to be found where they can be seen. The Orbi is accessible as a two-piece pack that offers 4,000 square feet of inclusion. Netgear additionally has an individual independent switch ($249.99) that conceals to 2,000 square feet, and it will in the end deliver singular satellites ($249.99 every) that give up to 2,000 square feet of inclusion.
A tri-band AC3000 gadget, the Orbi switch has six inner recieving wires and can convey hypothetical throughputs paces of 1,266Mbps to customers (400Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 866Mbps on the 5GHz band). The third band is which isolates the Orbi from the opposition; it's viewed as a backhaul band since it is committed simply to interchanges between the switch and the satellite. This is a 5GHz band that can arrive at most extreme rates of 1,733Mbps. The Ubiquiti, the Luma, and the Eero are double band frameworks and don't utilize a devoted band for switch to-satellite transmissions.
At the highest point of every part is a LED light ring. On the switch, the ring is strong white while booting up and squints golden when it loses its Internet association. A flickering blue and maroon light shows that you've arrived at your Internet traffic edge (more on this later), and when the light is out, everything is working appropriately. Around back, at the base of the switch, are three Gigabit LAN ports, a WAN port, a USB 2.0 port, and Sync, Power, and Reset catches. Regardless of Netgear's promoted claims that the USB port can be utilized to associate peripherals, like hard drives and printers, it was not working at the hour of this survey, and a representative couldn't affirm a date when a firmware update would fix the issue.
The satellite part likewise has a light ring that flickers white while the satellite is booting up and turns strong blue when the association with the switch is acceptable, golden when it's reasonable, and maroon when it loses its association. The lights make it simple to put the satellite in a focal area that will give a solid connect to the switch. At the back of the base are four Gigabit LAN ports, Reset, Sync, and Power catches, and a USB 2.0 port that doesn't work.
Though the Luma, Ubiquiti, and Eero frameworks are totally arranged and controlled utilizing a portable application, the Orbi utilizes a Web-based comfort, albeit a versatile application is in progress. The comfort is not difficult to utilize, and not at all like the opposition, it offers the sort of essential and progressed settings that you get with a conventional switch. The landing page incorporates tabs for Basic and Advanced settings, and presentations essential status data for Internet, Wireless, Attached Devices, and Parental Controls. Here, you can get to fundamental Internet (Dynamic or Static IP, DNS, and MAC Address) and Wireless (SSID name and Security) settings and see which customers are associated and their IP address. You can likewise set up visitor organizations, an element that was missing when the Orbi was first delivered.
On the off chance that you need more command over your organization, the Advanced tab takes you to an Advanced Security area, where you can set up Parental Controls to hinder admittance to sites, limit admittance to clients, and have email cautions sent when somebody attempts to get to an impeded site. You can likewise get to Advanced Wireless settings that let you change communicate power, empower beamforming and MU-MIMO, utilize the switch as a passage, and design things like Static Routing, VPN Service, and Port Forwarding.
Remembered for the Advanced settings is a Traffic Meter that allows you to see Internet traffic insights and spot limits on month to month transfer and download limits. At the point when the meter sees that it's arrived at its edge, you can have it closed down Internet admittance to all customers. You can likewise utilize Advanced settings to design things like IPv6 burrowing, see framework logs, and update the switch's firmware.
Installation and Performance
The Orbi framework is exceptionally simple to introduce. I connected the switch to my modem and associated it to my PC, fueled it up, and composed http://orbilogin.com in my program's location bar to dispatch the arrangement wizard. Following 10 seconds or somewhere in the vicinity, it effectively associated with the Internet and provoked me to set up the satellite or to avoid this progression and do it later, which I did. I was then approached to make a secret word and answer two security questions, and was given the alternative to change the switch's SSID name. The switch required around 90 seconds to refresh its firmware and was all set.
To install the satellite, I put it around 30 feet from the Orbi switch in my lounge, connected it, and stuck around two minutes while it adjusted with the switch. During this time, the light ring squinted white and maroon and afterward turned strong blue, demonstrating a decent sign with the switch. That is it.
I played out a progression of throughput tests on both the switch and the satellite. Likewise with the Luma and Eero frameworks, the Orbi utilizes a type of programmed band controlling that doesn't permit you to isolate the 2.4GHz band from the 5GHz band, so my outcomes depend on consolidated throughput speeds. On account of its utilization of a devoted backhaul band, throughput on the Orbi satellite module was almost indistinguishable from that on the switch. With the other Wi-Fi frameworks, satellite throughput was fundamentally not as much as switch throughput.
In my single-client closeness (same-room) tests, the Orbi switch turned in an entirely decent score of 480Mbps, and the satellite conveyed a similarly great 470Mbps. The Luma switch conveyed 457Mbps, however its satellite finished out at 106Mbps, and the Eero could just deal with a top score of 188.7Mbps from any module. The Ubiquiti Amplifi HD scored 459Mbps in the nearness test when associated with the switch and 193Mbps when associated with its most grounded satellite.
A good ways off of 30 feet, the Orbi switch scored 223Mbps, and the satellite scored 220Mbps. The Ubiquiti Amplifi HD switch likewise showed a throughput of 223Mbps, however its satellite maximized at 168Mbps. The Luma switch acquired 76.1Mbps, and its satellite scored 77.2Mbps, while the Eero scored 71.2Mbps. Via examination, our Editors' Choice midrange switch, the Linksys EA7500 Max-Stream AC1900 MU-MIMO Gigabit Router, had a throughput of 495Mbps (nearness) and 298Mbps (30 feet), and our top pick for top of the line switches, the D-Link DIR-895L/R, scored 515Mbps and 324Mbps, separately.
I tried the Orbi's MU-MIMO throughput utilizing three indistinguishable Acer Aspire R13 PCs furnished with Qualcomm's QCA61x4A MU-MIMO hardware. The switch arrived at the midpoint of 128Mbps in the closeness test, and the satellite scored 127.6Mbps. At 30 feet, both the switch and the satellite arrived at the midpoint of 124Mbps. These MU-MIMO scores can't coordinate with the scores from our top-performing top of the line switch, the D-Link DIR-895L/R (264.6Mbps and 134.5Mbps, individually), however they are absolutely good. The other Wi-Fi frameworks we've tried don't uphold MU-MIMO innovation.
Conclusion
Home Wi-Fi system offer an easy to understand option in contrast to the more mind boggling switch/extender arrangements used to cover your home with remote inclusion, and the Netgear Orbi High-Performance AC3000 Tri-Band Wi-Fi System (RBK50) is at present the best of the expanding crop. Both the switch and the satellite conveyed higher scores on our single-client throughput tests than the Luma, Eero, and Ubiquiti frameworks, and the Orbi system offers more LAN network and the board choices too.
Albeit the Orbi's MU-MIMO execution in testing was acceptable, it isn't exactly just about as quick as what you get from a top of the line switch like the D-Link DIR-895L/R, or even a midrange switch, for example, the Linksys EA7500, however in any event it upholds the innovation. All things considered, empowered USB ports would be welcome augmentations. We're anticipating trying the as of late declared frameworks from Amped Wireless (Ally), (Google Wifi), and Plume, yet right now the Netgear Orbi RBK50 is top pick for home Wi-Fi system.
