The Princession Orchestra stream was earlier and there was quite a bit of info given (and with it, the official site got an overhaul)

First off, it will start airing in April on Sunday mornings

A new trailer was shown, which reveals the antagonist group and plays the opening theme

Nabiyu's voice actor was revealed to be Hiro Shimono

The enemy group, Band Snatch (name based on "bandersnatch") was shown

(I am making up spellings for now, if they show official ones later, I will correct them)

Guita (CV: Shouya Chiba)

Bas (CV: Junya Enoki)

Drun (CV: Shunsuke Takeuchi)

Guita, Bas, and Drun's names are taken from guitar, bass, and drum. I guess Callisto's name could be taken from the guitar? Edit: Okay yeah, his name is more likely taken from "vocalist" (ボーカリスト)

The opening theme is titled "Zettai Utahime Sengen!" and is performed by Orcheria (a group made up of the three Princesses). The lyrics and composition are by Noriyasu Agematsu and it is arranged by Daisuke Kikuta. It says distribution starts January 17 at midnight

and I didn't even include magical boy anime (which isn't as rare as some people think)

look. a subgenre going in a direction you don't like for a while doesn't make it "dead". reboots, sequels, prequels, and stuff like that are the trend in all sorts of media, not just magical girl anime.

also, there are all sorts of cool magical girl works that aren't anime, and i don't just mean manga and light novels. there's live-action stuff, VNs, webcomics, written works, cartoons from countries other than japan...

and guess what? i'm not against dark magical girl stuff by any means. madoka magica was what got me into magical girl stuff in the first place! i love all sorts of magical girl media, both light and dark, though i don't claim to be an expert by any means. there's still so much stuff i haven't watched/read/played...

anyway, the anime listed here include Artiswitch, Kuromajo-san ga Tooru, Little Witch Academia, Fantasista Doll, Magia Wars, SHY, Hina Logi: From Luck and Logic, Matoi the Sacred Slayer, I've Had Enough of Being a Magical Girl, Urahara, Flip Flappers, Six Hearts Princess, Magical Girl Kurumi, The Demon Girl Next Door, and Mewkledreamy. The upcoming ones are Magical Girl Aiko, Princess Session Orchestra, Acro Trip, Magilumiere, The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to be Enemies, and an unnamed magical girl anime from Studio Pierrot

Finally checked out some of the music they've dropped for Princess-Session Orchestra already and yup that's some Symphogear ass music if I've ever heard it... The wait for April just got way harder for me...

Let's talk a bit about an anime that has both Akifumi Kaneko and Noriyasu Agematsu as major members of the staff and music by Elements Garden

One where in the first episode the lead goes to a concert

The concert gets attacked by monsters

The lead stays behind in the venue and witnesses the artist she went to see transform into a warrior that fights the monsters while singing

Later in the episode monsters attack again and the lead also transforms, but her fight and song are left for the next episode

The credits of the first episode scroll over a black screen while playing the opening theme, the actual OP and ED are also left to play in the next episode

Oh and uh, the lead has a childhood friend with a kanji that means sun in her surname

...Were we talking about Symphogear or Princession Orchestra? 🤔

You don't get one of these super often. If anyone's not aware, Princess-Session Orchestra is a four-cour (that is to say, it'll be airing until around this time next year) magical girl series aimed at children. It is very, very directly competing with Pretty Cure, so I've been rooting super hard for this ever since it was announced. Now that the first episode is here and has been fansubbed (since ofc no streaming service is going to pick up something like this), I'm glad that I got to watch it.

That said, I really wish the prognosis was better than it is. I didn't hate this or anything, I would actually say I liked it overall. For strengths, the action is decent and the music (which consists of full-on, diagetically sung battle songs in large part, like Symphogear from some of the same people) is excellent. Everything else is a lot shakier, and I hate making "ooh budget" comments on stuff like this because it feels inane and like such a cop-out, but it is very obvious that this is being done with fairly thin resources in a general sense. Pretty much everything that isn't directly an action scene looks pretty mediocre, and as mentioned even the action scenes themselves only hit "decent" in my opinion.

The characters are charming, so that's another solid point, and I'm sure older Precure fans will appreciate the appearance of some Little Monster Guy minions as the main bad guys so far. Still, I don't think this show's long term prospects are great, which really saddens me.

The positive thing tho is that since this is going to be airing for like, you know, a *while,* it has a lot of time to improve. So maybe it'll get better, who can say.

Also I can't help but notice that the opening plot beat of "idol concert interrupted by monster attack" is basically the same general thing as happens in the opening episode of the original Symphogear. Now that episode actually featured someone *dying* whereas I think Minamo's normie friend here will be fine. Still, the comparison makes itself when some of the same folks are involved.
