46. A lingering kiss before a long trip apart.

Rahjim breathes heavily in the aftermath. After all this, it seems too easy. His uncle in chains, the throne is his now. It’s too big, too large. The life it offers is constrained, like chains around his arms. He will never be free, once he sits on it. He never asked for this burden.

Kharion sheaths his swords, “The fighting is done,” he declares, “my oath is fulfilled.” 

“Take me with you,” Rahjim blurts out, “there’s so much to see out there-- so much more to experience. I can’t-- I’m not a leader. I’m no good at diplomacy. I want to fight, I want to travel.” 

Kharion considers his words. The captain always takes his time with his thoughts. Rahjim likes how captivating that makes him, because his words are so carefully chosen. 

“You would make for a terrible pirate,” Kharion finally says. 

“I’m a very good pirate,” Rahjim insists, “I love treasure, and sharing your bunk.”

Kharion chuckles. His wings take up space as he stretches them out, shakes off the energy of the fight. 

“If you ran away with me, you would regret it,” Kharion says. 

Rahjim looks around the empty hall, back to the open throne. He’s right. To run away, leave his people leader-less, in the face of the Galran invasion? The Galra will completely overtake them, turn them into a colony with no rights, no power. 

“I don’t know how to beat the Galra,” Rahjim admits, “I don’t-- I don’t think we have the power for that. And our allies won’t reach us in time. It’s a losing battle.” 

“You’re good in a fight,” Kharion reminds him. 

“Thank you for that,” Rahjim agrees.

“But you’re better with words,” Kharion finishes. 

Rahjim blushes at the praise, “Good enough to convince a pirate to stay? Perhaps as my guard?” 

“No one is that good,” Kharion lets him down gently. Rahjim already knew the answer. Kharion belongs to the open skies, to the lawless freedom of the pirate life.

“I’m going to miss you,” Rahjim confesses, “I know it’s strange to say to my captor--”

“Your captain,” Kharion corrects. 

“I’ll be a Prince next time we meet. I’ll outrank you,” Rahjim reminds him. 

"I know no sovereign,” Kharion says, “not even a backwater prince like you.” 

“You may not recognize my power, but you like me anyways,” Rahjim says.

“Aye. Against my better judgement,” Kharion agrees, “you’re a rascal. Bring that to your politics. They won’t know what to do with you.” 

“Listen, hopefully,” Rahjim says. 

They’re both drawing out this goodbye, when they don’t have the time to do so. 

Rahjim likes how Kharion towers over him. How the captain fills the space with his bulk. 

“Thank you,” Rahjim says again.

“This was a job,” Kharion reminds him, “not personal. I don’t get involved.”

“Right,” Rahjim nods, “I did offer payment. It will-- I might need time to put it together. Can you return?” 

“A pirate willingly coming to the crown Prince? Do you think I’m stupid?” Kharion laughs, “pay me the next time we meet.”

"When will that be. I’m going to be so busy, and it’s not like I can just go anywhere as the Prince-- oh,” Rahjim realizes. They’re never going to meet again. 

“Kharion...” he starts. 

Kharion cuts him off with a kiss. Sharp teeth against his mouth, the scent of the larger man around him. It’s a moment, an eternity in time. Because this is the end, and Rahjim is terrified of the future barreling in on him. Rahjim sighs as Kharion pulls away. 

“I only did this for the money,” Kharion reminds him. A lie. The Captain has a softer heart than he’ll ever admit. 

“I’ll have it ready, for the next time,” Rahjim promises.

“For the next time,” Kharion agrees, “don’t break your promise, my backwater prince.” 

He spares one last look at Rahjim, and then takes his leave. 

Rahjim takes the throne.

Look I'm sorry I keep thinking I'm done but I just love your baby SO MUCH. You said that Rahjim needs to be in the same room in order to read emotions? Is that his range? Or is that just to know who's emotions belong to who? If two people were in a hedge maze, would he be able to find them based on flavor? Does how close he is to someone effect his range? Also you mentioned now isn't a good time for kids for him, but... when and how? Aka who would be "appropriate" when the time is right? Thanks!

Overall I think he has to be in close contact. If he’s familiar with someone, he might be able to pick them out from a distance if he focuses, or possibly if he’s really “listening” in on someone he could pick things up, but otherwise it’d be about being in the same room/near one another. 

As for children, Rahjim would probably have children with someone well-selected to procreate with. He wouldn’t be raising the child(ren) himself, or be very involved with their upbringing since that’s what tutors, nannies, and the rest of the help are for. Rahjim and the other Parent would remain on good terms but also potentially go off and have other children with other people, since Rahjim’s people don’t believe in or practice monogamy. 

Having children is still a Big Deal tho, and Rahjim’s still having fun being a bachelor while also secretly trying to help take down the tyrannical Empire. For him, having children opens himself up to blackmail or for them to be hurt to be used against him, and so Rahjim probably won’t consider having children until the Galra have been defeated.

But now ones missing, one he never even got to meet.

The Pals attend a fancy gala that Rahjim also happens to be at, and later on in the night he actually convinces Shiro to dance with him (Rahjim teaches Shiro the dances as they go. There’s lots of mistakes. It’s so much fun.) And it’s one of the first times the Pals have seen Shiro grinning and laughing and just having fun with someone and it makes all of them happy for him.

And then later just picture Rahjim n Shiro slowdancing and kissing tenderly while Shiro thanks him for being such n amazing friend. Rahjim’s hands drop a little lower from Shiro’s waist and he tells Shiro he can think of a few ways for Shiro to pay him back, which makes Shiro laugh out loud- and then he orders Rahjim to take him to bed.

LOOK OK I can't stop thinking of a daemon au and Rahjim meeting Shiro's daemon and??? Them opening up for the first time in forever?? (i personally have a super indulgent daemon au where it gets 2 forms to show the duality of a person, and I headcanon Shiro having a daemon named Mitsuki who is a wolf and a cat?). The creation of Rahjim has spoiled me as a person thank you for him

Everything I know about daemon aus, I learned from reading daemon au’s lol.(I read one where Shiro had a Great Pyrenees daemon and I can’t unsee it, though a cat of some sort would also work well for Shiro)

So at the start of RS, Shiro and his daemon don’t get close to others. They’ve been brutalized in the arena, leading to them no longer caring for The Taboo and so Shiro’s daemon fights alongside him drawing blood and taking lives, and they are able to be far apart from each other, to a distance that makes the other humans feel sick at the thought, without any hassle. So Shiro and his daemon still perform patrols every night, her fur is matted and they don’t take care of it, they don’t talk about the Arena, and pretend like they’re fine when they’re everything BUT fine

Then Rahjim comes along, and Shiro’s gotten more used to aliens not having Daemons but it’s still super weird to him, and Rahjim convinces Shiro to have a one night stand with him. Shiro’s daemon follows along close on their heels, waiting for the first sign that something is wrong and then she’ll tear Rahjim’s throat out, prince or not.

By the end of the night Shiro is sleeping, curled up against Rahjim, and he invites the daemon to come join them on the bed. She’s hesitant at first, but eventually comes close enough to lick Rahjim’s hand and let him gently pet her. It startles both of them when her tail wags a bit, and she leans into the touch, resting her head on the bed, and sighs happily. She’s convinced to let Rahjim and Shiro bathe her and try to work out most of the mats in her fur, so when she and Shiro go home in the morning, she’s the cleanest she’s been since going into the Arena.

From here on in, whenever they visit, she runs ahead so Rahjim can scratch her behind the ears and she sleeps up on the bed with them, laying over Shiro and Rahjim’s feet and letting them rub her belly while she grins and wags her tail.
