For so many of us around the world, social distancing has become our short-term responsibility to keep ourselves and each other safe. To avoid the further spread of COVID-19, especially to those in our communities who are most at risk, it’s our duty to stay home as much as possible and maintain a safe distance from others.

Making History
The French Revolution is a time in world history that is taught everywhere to students young and old. It brought about many changes that affected France and the rest of the world today. The revolution, from 1789-1799, succeeded in abolishing the French monarchy and began the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. Right before the French Revolution took hold, there were financial, cultural, social, political, and economic causes that created the prime atmosphere to start a revolution. The people who were fed up with the conditions in which they were living in took that opportunity to launch their campaign and would end up succeeding.

Louis XIV’s grand chateau, Versailles
The beginning of the French Revolution took place with the people’s dislike of not being represented in the Estates-General, which was made up of France’s clergy, nobility, and middle class, and complied lists of their grievances to be discussed when they all met at Versailles. The Third Estate, which represented 98 percentage of France’s population, was no longer satisfied with the voting procedures of the Estates-General and how they could easily be overturned by the nobility veto despite the numbers they represented. This caused talk and controversy so that by the May 5, 1789 meeting of the Estates-General, people would know what they wanted, equal representation and the abolishment of the nobility veto. Hostility had been created between the three parties and the Third Estate created their own assembly called the National Assembly. They all met in a tennis court near Versailles and took the Tennis Court Oath which owed that they would disassemble until constitutional reform had been achieved. By June 26th, most of the clerical deputies had joined them along with some liberal nobility which ended up having Louis XVI dissolve the three orders into the National Assembly.

The Bastille metro stop in Paris
On July 14, 1789, which the French claim to be the real start of the French Revolution, the storming of the Bastille took. Rioters stormed the Bastille in order to secure weapons and gunpowder. While resistance was put up, it eventually crumbled and allowed the people to storm the fortress and overtake it. In this process, the Bastille was eventually destroyed and demolished.

Hotel de Ville
In 1792, the guillotine entered the scene at the Hotel de Ville. On April 25, was the first time the guillotine was used in the square outside of the Hotel de Ville. The guillotine became a sign of the Reign of Terror which consisted of the beheading of many influential figures in France at the time. The square became a spectacle for the citizens to gather and watch their fellow peers get beheaded for committing acts of treason.

Tuileries Gardens outside the Louvre
The Tuileries Gardens used to house another extension of the Royal Palace. In August of 1792, the revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace and burned it to the ground. In the process, the royal family was captured and thrown into prison. After this, the revolutionaries saw success because they had successfully overthrown the French monarchy. The Revolutionary Tribunal is then created to make judgements on who should be executed.

Place de la Concorde
Once known as Place de la Revolution, Place de la Concorde hosted numerous of executions including those of Louis XVI and Marie Antionette. It was in the beginning of 1793 that Louis XVI was executed here. The commander of the execution issued a drum roll to drown out his final words. In total, 1,119 people lost their lives here.

Conciergerie
The Conciergerie has hosted many people in its lifetime as a prison, but its most notable occupant was Marie Antoinette. She was moved to this prison on August 2, 1973 and was to remain there until her execution, September 22. She wasn't finally executed until October 16 at the Place de la Revolution.

Musee du Louvre
The Louvre Museum was officially created after the royal monarchy had been abolished back in 1972. The Royal Palace had been abandoned but still housed many important works. A year and a day after the fall of the monarchy the palace became the “museum central des arts”. It has now become one of the leading museums in the world and holds an outstanding collection of art.

Luxembourg Gardens
In March of 1794, the Palais du Luxembourg became a prison and housed other notable figures important to the French Revolution. It was only a prison for a brief period of time. It then became the seat of the French Directory. In 1799 it came the first residence of Napoleon.

Liberty Leading the People 
The French Revolution concluded in 1799 with Napoleon Bonaparte taking control of the Councils after coming back from Egypt. The painting “Liberty Leading the People” was painted in 1830 commemorating the fall of Charles X. While it has nothing to do with the French Revolution, it shows the importance of the revolution. After the 10 year battle for citizens to get what they want, they won it and I am sure it felt great. So when another opportunity arose to take control and get what they want again, they took it. The woman holding the French flag is “Marianne” and she has become a symbol of France. Without the French Revolution, other important revolution may have never happened and we would not have the popular symbol of Marianne to lead the way.

A Few Days in Paris
We were in Paris a little over two years ago for our honeymoon, so we weren’t planning to come back this soon. Jason had a conference, though, and when one gets a chance to tack on a trip to Paris, one should do so.
We landed at 8:00 am local, which is never fun, but we dropped off our bags and headed out to drink a lot of coffee and get some food. We also walked over to Notre Dame, which we were curious to see since the fire. It was...a bit heart breaking. There’s a metal and razor wire fence around the cathedral and surrounding grounds, right in front of the rows of cafes that previously had prime real estate. Notre Dame is such an amazing center point of the city, and it’s hard to see it barricaded. They are working hard to restore it, though, and it’s clear that it will be back.

We also went to Shakespeare and Company to say hi to the books and the cat, and headed to the Louvre to do some people watching. We didn’t go in - we’re still pretty intimidated by the crowds and the pure size of the building, and we were exhausted - but it’s a fun area to wander.

While Jason was napping, I found one of my new favorite parks in the city - Parc des Buttes-Chaumont. There’s a pavillion on top of an island in the lake, and it’s quite beautiful. There’s also a lot of sloping lawn where I got to sit and read with the Parisians.

On Sunday we took a bike tour of Versailles. I’d highly recommend doing a bike tour, since you’re able to see so much more of the grounds that way. It’s also far less crowded than the palace and garden area.
After we took the train out to Versailles in the morning, our guide took us to an indoor/outdoor market to buy picnic food. It’s probably one of my favorite markets that I’ve been to - it’s very picturesque and has a variety of food and wine to purchase (that being said, Jason didn’t get any pictures of it that he liked, so you’ll just have to go yourselves). We picked up the five essentials of a French picnic: bread, cheese, salami, fruit, and wine (we found a Marsannay, one of my favorite white wines, that I was very excited about). From there, we headed into the grounds.

The grounds of Versailles are used for several things right now - Gordon Ramsey has a restaurant that looks out over the grounds, and there’s a farm to grow the food, as well as sheep and goats. It’s also classically pastoral and quite beautiful. We had a picnic lunch on the west side of the Grand Canal, and it was lovely and peaceful, with only a few other groups nearby.

Our guide told us a lot of French history as we made our way through the grounds. Most of what we learned was about Louis XIV, since he was the one who did most of the work on Versailles during his impressive 76 years of life, but we also heard about Louis XIII, XV, and XVI, making it a little difficult to keep everything straight. We learned about Marie Antionette, who was both very harshly judged and misunderstood (the quote about cake was not from her at all). But, she also made some rather lavish choices, like creating a sort of Bavarian working farm theme park where she and her children could pretend they were in Austria. It was both adorable and very weird.

After touring the grounds we went into Versailles, which is a place of excessive opulence. It’s very impressive, but the experience was hindered somewhat by the crazy crowds of people trying to see the most famous rooms. My favorite part (I’m not super into gilding, though it’s cool) was the painted ceilings - the attention to detail from the artists was truly incredible. It was also pretty crazy to imagine living in a place like that. We were only allowed in certain corridors, and we still felt lost a couple of times.

The gardens outside the palace are also amazing and ridiculous. There are double hedges everywhere so that servants could get around without the nobility seeing them. There are also a ton of fountains - I was blown away by the number of fountains that we happened upon while wandering. The fountains were originally gravity fed (which was one reason so many servants had to run around in the second layer of hedges), and they were still having some issues keeping them all running.

Paris is amazing. It’s always been amazing, and it always will be amazing. We moved over one arrondissement and stayed in the 10th this time, right next to the metro, which was lovely after we walked 31 miles in the first 3 days and were in considerable discomfort. We revisited some of our favorite places and also explored some more of the inner neighborhoods.

On Monday we went to the Eiffel Tower (twice, actually - once in the morning and once at night, when it was lit up) and did some general wandering and relaxing. Our feet were in a considerable amount of pain by this point, so we were trying to take it easy (though I still ended up walking over 14 miles, according to my watch). Night walking in Paris is wonderful, and the Eiffel Tower at night is amazing. I have no idea how they light it up so completely, but it’s breathtaking, even when you’re been staring at it for a while.

Since we had already been to Paris and Jason had a conference and some work to do, we did less touristy things and had some more downtime planned in. I spent hours reading - mostly in parks, but on one occasion in a wine bar while locals chatted enthusiastically around me and kids played soccer outside of the school nearby. Being an introvert in a country where I don’t speak the language is a combination that can be somewhat isolating, but it’s always nice to see the similarities in human interaction around the world. We’re very consistent creatures, and it’s comforting to see such familiar joy and frustration.
On Wednesday we went to the Musée d’Orsay, which is a wonderful art museum in an old train station. They have a pretty amazing collection, including a bunch from Monet, Manet, Picasso, and Rodin, which are some of our favorites. There’s also a light-filled indoor courtyard of sculptures, which I’m always a huge fan of.

We had a variety of food while in the city - French food, of course, but also some fusions and imports, including Italian, Lebanese, and BBQ that was a mix between North and South American. We also had a ridiculous amount of wine, because how can you not.
Overall, Paris was amazing, as expected. The food, the parks, the views, the absurdly convenient metro system - it’s just a very good city. We’ll be back again.
Also, museums are closed on Mondays. Keep that in mind.

Eiffel Tower, Louvre to close amid fears of weekend 'GILETS JAUNES ' protests

Paris (CNN) - France is bracing for yet another weekend of protests that could rock Paris and other parts of the country.
Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said the government was deploying 89,000 security force members across France -- including 8,000 in the capital -- in case the demonstrations turn violent again.
Many of the capital's famed sites -- including the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, the Musée Delacroix and the Paris Opera -- will close over the weekend in advance of the protests, organized by the "gilets jaunes," or "yellow vest" movement. Their name comes from the high-visibility yellow vests that drivers are required to keep in their vehicles for safety reasons.
Interior Minister Christophe Castaner vowed to deploy all the means available to ensure the latest yellow vest protests are not hijacked by what he said were "10,000" people, "a small minority" of the movement who have been "radicalized and fallen into violence and hate."
"We have to guarantee the safety of protesters and the right of citizens to move around freely," Castaner told a news conference Friday.
Stores along the capital's famed Champs Elysees avenue have also been advised to remain shut this weekend. Many shop owners were boarding up their stores on Friday amid fears of further disorder.
The French retail sector has suffered a loss in revenue of about $1.1 billion since the beginning of the yellow vest protests last month, a spokeswoman for the French retail federation, Sophie Amoros, told CNN.
Amid heightened tensions, police seized 28 petrol bombs and three homemade explosive devices on Friday at an area blockaded by protesters in Montauban, southern France, a spokesman for the Tarn-et-Garonne prefecture told CNN.
PROTESTER : I'M NOT BACKING DOWN
Nationwide, some 630 people were arrested and more than 260 were injured, including 81 police officers, during last weekend's protests, the third consecutive week of such demonstrations.
There have also been four accidental deaths, according to officials. Three of them resulted from traffic accidents related to the blockades and the fourth was an 80-year-old woman who died in Marseille after being hit by a tear gas canister that came through her window.
The demonstrations began as a form of grassroots opposition to rising gas prices and planned increases in taxes on polluting forms of transport, but they have since evolved into broader demonstrations against the government of President Emmanuel Macron.
Macron appeared to back down Wednesday, announcing that the fuel tax planned for January -- as part of measures to combat climate change -- would not be introduced in 2019. But the movement now appears to be about more than just taxes; it's exposed the growing divide between Paris' metropolitan elite and the country's rural poor.
Maxime Nicolle, a member of the gilets jaunes from rural Brittany, told CNN: "I'm definitely not backing down now. The moratorium is useless. The people want a referendum, a referendum on Macron, the senate and the national assembly."
Street furniture, such as railings around trees, public bicycle stations and benches, will be removed from parts of Paris ahead of the expected protests so they can't be used as weapons, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said.
Municipal buildings will be closed and services "mobilized and determined to ensure everyone's protection," she said. In an appeal to protesters, the mayor added: "Please take care of Paris, because Paris belongs to all the French people."
UNREST SPREADS TO SCHOOLS
Many of those protesting have moved into the suburbs due to rising real estate prices. Suburban protesters, like those from rural areas, argue that they're disproportionately affected by the now-shelved gas tax, as they rely on gasoline and cars much more than city-dwellers.
Castener said he had talked to protesters around the country and had some sympathy with their concerns and economic troubles.
But, he said, the French government had made appropriate gestures. "The Prime Minister opened the door, and canceled the environment tax," he said.
The unrest has also spread to hundreds of high schools across the country, where students are demonstrating against the government's recent education reforms.
More than 140 people were arrested outside a school in the Paris suburb of Mantes-la-Jolie on Thursday after protesters clashed with police.
Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer told radio station France Inter on Friday that he, like many others, had been shocked by images of students in Mantes-la-Jolie being made to kneel with their hands behind their heads by security forces. But he said it was important to note that elements from outside the high school had made use of the situation to stir up trouble and attack security forces.
Castaner said only 12 officers were present to bring the situation under control, which was reflected in the methods they used.
Meanwhile, La Voix du Nord newspaper in northern France reported that a bottle containing acid had been thrown Friday at one of its journalists and a fellow reporter while they were covering a high school protest in the town of Wingles, in the Pas-de-Calais department. The pair narrowly managed to avoid being hit, the paper said.
PRESIDENCY IN CRISIS
It's unclear if the gilets jaunes demonstrations will be as violent or as large this weekend as they have been previously. The number of protesters peaked last month at 282,000, according to the Interior Ministry, but has been slowly on the decline, with 136,000 taking part on December 2.
Since the first protests were held in mid-November, 1,648 people have been injured in total, including 552 police officers, the Interior Ministry said. More than 1,600 people have been taken in for questioning and 1,387 have been arrested.
Small retailers, hotels and restaurants have all seen their takings fall significantly as a result of the protests, according to the French Ministry of Finance.
While large protests are common in France, they're usually organized in a top-down fashion by the country's powerful unions. By contrast, the gilets jaunes protests began as a grassroots movement that emerged online, with Facebook events set up by citizens mostly from rural areas.
Dominique Moisi, a foreign policy expert at the Paris-based Institut Montaigne and a former Macron campaign adviser, told CNN the French presidency was not only in crisis but that Europe's future also hung in the balance.
"In a few months from now there will be European elections, and France was supposed to be the carrier of hope and European progress. What happens if it's no longer? If the president is incapacitated to carry that message?" Moisi said.
"It's about the future of democracy, as well, illiberal democracies are rising all over the world. And if Macron fails, the future of France risks looking like the presidency of Italy today. And it's much more serious because we have a centralized state which plays a major role in the balance of power within Europe.
"But make no mistake, it is a French version of a much more global phenomenon."
