The Philippines made Pride History by hosting the first LGBT Pride March in Asia, June 26th 1994 Thirty Years Ago!

This event was organized by the Progressive Organization of Gays in the Philippines (PROGAY Philippines) and the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) Manila. The march was small in number, with 60 participants in fact. As they marched from EDSA at Quezon Avenue to Quezon Memorial Circle in Quezon City

10,000 take to hot streets for Midsumma Pride March

10,000 people took to the sweltering streets of Melbourne today for the annual Midsumma Pride March. A confrontation between police and protestors during the march saw one person arrested.

The protestors surrounded police participating in the parade on Fitzroy Street and attempted to stop them marching.

18,000 people registered to march in today’s Pride celebration. Thousands more lined inner city Melbourne streets to watch the parade despite a predicted of 38 degrees.

Dykes on Bikes headed off the parade followed by Boon Wurrung elders and a Rainbow Aboriginal Float.

Midsumma Police Protest

A group called QueerKillJoys invited people to join them in protesting the police presence in the parade on Saturday.

“CRASH the Midsumma pride march TOMORROW!…PRIDE MARCH JUMP IN WHEN YOU SEE US become a great and perhaps damaging influence.”

On Instagram, QueerKillJoys described themselves as a “collective of queers formed to destroy pinkwashing and assimilation. There is no pride on the stolen lands of so-called Australia and its ongoing genocide of First Nations’ Peoples. There is nothing to celebrate in genocide against Palestine.”

The final leg of our DL Noho Pride Socially Distanced March yesterday! The normal route ends at The Three County Fairgrounds, but as there’s no Rally this year, we marched the route in reverse and ended our Pandemic Year Pride Stroll with ice cream at Herrell’s!!! Along the route I explained to people why we were doing this. And really there’s a lot of reasons. But one of the big reasons I shared with them, I’ll share with you. Noho Pride is one of the older Prides in the country. AUCKLAND PRIDE MARCH! What a day!! Thanks for making it SO SO special, @soph.xx.21 As the older cousin, I have been told to dull my colour for the fear that I would “influence” my younger cousins and I know (from also attending the same high school), that from day 1 you’re TOLD how you are to be as a person and how you’re going to dress. During those 4-5 years of utter hell, you find you have lost your identity. I remember listening to ‘Just Dance’ by @ladygaga for the first time, which ironically coincided with my first year in Uni and I cried because I found someone I resonated with. Someone who is not made from a cookie-cutter, who shares my avant- garde taste in fashion and is unapologetically outspoken. It was liberating. I remember as a kid at one of my birthday parties, Tatu had just released their song ‘All the things she said’ and the girls didn’t want to listen to it because there were apparently two girls kissing in the video and they were scared of how their parents would react. That’s just one of the many stories I have on this topic. SO, you can imagine how moving it was to bring my little fairy to a ‘safe’ and non-judgmental zone where she could be herself and be surrounded by a community of likeminded and supportive people, as she figures out where she fits into the rainbow. I am so proud that at only 15 years young, she is a strong girl proud of who she is. I know for some people it can take a lifetime. It took me heaps of soul searching around the world to realise I am just me and I love and support everyone. I hate being restricted. I strongly dislike labels. I consciously step away from prejudice. Thank you for all those who turned up and brought so much colour and delight to our afternoon.
