Nan Goldin: I dont know how the Sackler family live with themselves. Photograph: Nan Goldin
Nan Goldin lights a cigarette and takes a puff. My dealer came here 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I was one of his best customers. She giggles sarcastically. He texted me when I was in rehab saying he was having a sale. He had dropped his prices in the hope of luring her back. She has since deleted his number from her phone and has been out of rehab and drug-free for 10 months.
I almost didnt leave this house for three years, she says. Goldin looks around the living room in her elegant Brooklyn apartment, paintings and photographs dotted around the walls, though none of her own, and Larry the stuffed coyote fixed in a permanent howl by the window.
Her most recent drug experience was very different to the old days, when she became one of the worlds most famous art photographers, capturing herself and those around her getting high, having sex and hanging out in downtrodden homes in the 70s and 80s.
This second experience began with a doctor in Berlin, where she has a second home. In 2014, Goldin was prescribed the potent narcotic OxyContin for painful tendonitis in her left wrist. She promptly became addicted, despite taking the pills exactly as prescribed.
The first time I got a scrip it was 40 milligrams and it was too strong for me; they made me nauseated and dulled. By the end, I was on 450mg a day, she says. Eventually she was crushing and snorting them. When, back in New York, doctors refused to supply her any more, she turned to the black market, and to cheaper hard street drugs whenever she ran out of money.
Emerging from a rehab facility in Massachusetts last March, she began reading about OxyContin and realised the branded medicine was prime suspect in the opioid crisis that has ripped through the US over the past 20 years. The epidemic has killed more than 200,000 people so far. Now she is declaring war against members of the secretive US family behind the invention of OxyContin, and behind the ingenious marketing strategy that was used to convince doctors it was harmless and patients that they needed it.
I dont know how they live with themselves, she says. Synthetic opioids mimic the effects of natural opioid drugs (which include opium and heroin), and their use, on prescription, is spreading in the UK and beyond, causing alarm among health experts. (The makers of OxyContin have subsidiary firms in Europe, Asia and Latin America.)
The name Sackler may ring a bell if youve walked across the new forecourt at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, or noticed the arrival of the Sackler Gallery at the Serpentine in 2013. Or if youve visited the ancient Egyptian Temple of Dendur in the Sackler Wing of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, seen the Sackler Centre for Arts Education at the Guggenheim or a host of other arts institutions around the world with galleries or wings named after the family.
Dope on my rug, New York, 2016. Photograph: Nan Goldin
With charitable foundations on both sides of the Atlantic, the Sacklers, who are based in New York, have donated millions to the arts and sponsored faculties at Yale and many other universities. In each case, the familys name is displayed prominently as the benefactor. Forbes listed the collective estimated worth of the 20 core family members at $14bn (10bn) in 2015, partly derived from $35bn in sales revenue from OxyContin between 1995 and 2015.
But few know their wealth comes from Purdue Pharma, a private Connecticut company the family developed and wholly owns. In 1995, the company revolutionised the prescription painkiller market with the invention of OxyContin, a drug that is a legal, concentrated, chemical version of morphine or heroin. It was designed to be safe; when it first came to market, its slow-release formula was unique. After winning government approval it was hailed as a medical breakthrough, which Goldin now refers to as magical thinking.
It was aggressively marketed to doctors many of whom were taken on lavish junkets, given misleading information and paid to give talks on the drug while patients were wrongly told the pills were a reliable long-term solution to chronic pain, and in some cases offered coupons for a months free sample.
Goldin, 64, is incensed that no one in the Sackler family is being held to account. She has created a campaign to try to shame the family into paying for rehab and overdose antidotes instead of patios in art museums. Im not asking the museums to give the money back, she says, but I dont want them to take any more from the Sacklers, and I want them to put out statements in solidarity with my campaign.
A group of friends and activists have been meeting weekly in her apartment in a Brooklyn brownstone, brainstorming ideas for a forthcoming direct-action campaign. She first publicly revealed that she was recovering from opioid addiction last autumn, when she gave a talk in Brazil; then, in December, she wrote about it for the US periodical Artforum, saying of the Sacklers: To get their ear we will target their philanthropy. They have washed their blood money through the halls of museums and universities around the world.
In a New Yorker expos of the family ties last year, Allen Frances, the former chair of psychiatry at Duke University school of medicine, told the magazine: Their name has been pushed forward as the epitome of good works and of the fruits of the capitalist system. But, when it comes down to it, theyve earned this fortune at the expense of millions of people who are addicted. Its shocking how they have gotten away with it.
Goldin is now hurrying through a modern activist learning curve. First I wanted to go out with signs and picket a Sackler wing of something, because thats what we did in the Vietnam war and thats what we did with Act Up in the Aids crisis, she says. But she recently discovered social media I went on Instagram for the first time three weeks ago, she says and realised that petitions are online these days, so has set about organising one, which will be presented in due course to those Sackler family members on Purdue Pharmas board of directors. She is also now on Twitter, so there is a hashtag campaign, #ShameOnSackler, while her campaign overall is called Prescription Addiction Intervention Now (Pain).
Self-portrait. Photograph: Nan Goldin
Goldin believes that aside from the prestige of supporting high culture, rather than addressing the stigma of addiction the family isnt directing philanthropy to recovery and prevention because it would be tantamount to accepting culpability.
Three Purdue Pharma executives pleaded guilty in 2007 to federal criminal charges that they misled regulators, doctors and patients about OxyContins risk of addiction and its potential to be abused. The company settled for a record $600m. But no members of the Sackler family were charged or mentioned.
In 2010, after the showdown with regulators and many civil lawsuit settlements and with the original patent on OxyContin due to expire Purdue tweaked its product to make it harder to snort and was more explicit in its marketing about the risks of addiction.
There are rival drugs on the market, but OxyContin is widely considered to be ground zero in the US opioid epidemic. The federal agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, reported in 2017 that 91 people are dying every day in the US from drug overdoses, 60% of which involve opioids. Deaths from prescription opioids have quadrupled since 1999.
In the past five years, as prescriptions for opioids fell in response to the crisis, Americans didnt shake the habit or seek rehab; they turned to heroin instead. Four out of five people in the US who try heroin today started with prescription painkillers, according to the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Then street heroin started being secretly cut with the dangerous synthetic opioid fentanyl.
An overdose of fentanyl killed Prince in 2016, but last year medical documents showed that he had first become dependent on prescription opioids they mentioned oxycodone, the generic version and main active ingredient of the branded pill OxyContin. The family of Tom Petty revealed at the weekend that the singers death last October was caused by an accidental overdose with a cocktail of prescription drugs and pain pills, including oxycodone and fentanyl.
People are dropping like flies. I overdosed on fentanyl, but survived, Goldin says. She eventually sought help from a doctor she knew from the first time she got clean from hard drugs, in 1989. Before going into rehab this time, she detoxed at home. As she notes, there are many different types of rehab, and the care and therapy you receive after detoxing from the actual substance is just as important.
They look at the persons underlying problems, says Goldin. Potent opioids created a generation of addicts, with mass overprescribing in the US healthcare system. But many old-school street-drug addicts, as Goldin once was, turned to drugs originally as an escape from childhood trauma, loneliness, depression or poverty. She speaks of the doctors and therapists who helped her overcome her addiction as kind.
Goldin in Sweden. Photograph: Nan Goldin
In rehab last year, she also had to shake a long-term dependence on benzodiazepines one of the most well-known brand names for such sedatives is Valium. The company that became Purdue Pharma was started in 1892, but then expanded by three brothers, Arthur, Mortimer and Raymond Sackler, in the 1950s. All three are dead now. Arthur died in 1987, before OxyContin was invented, but he had once been responsible for brilliant advertising and marketing campaigns for drugs owned by other companies most notably Valium that focused on selling doctors and the public on using such wonder drugs for an inordinate variety of ailments.
Goldin herself was put on Valium when I was 19 because I was anxious, she says. Thats how widely it was prescribed.
After Goldins article in Art Forum, Arthurs daughter, Elizabeth Sackler, wrote a letter to the periodical, which will go online on 1 February, noting that her fathers one-third stake in Purdue was sold by his estate to his brothers shortly after his death and that neither she nor her children have benefited in any way from it, or from the sale of OxyContin. She calls Purdue Pharmas role in the opioid crisis morally abhorrent.
But although Goldin admires the Elizabeth A Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum, she notes that it was the marketing prowess of Elizabeths father, in his approach to Valium, that provided a model for Purdues pushing of OxyContin. Shes not off the hook, says Goldin.
The 10 months since she left rehab have been hard. But I cant go back [on drugs], Ill die. Im staying clean for my doctor, for myself, for activism and the sake of other addicts. I feel that in my soul, it would be devastating if I relapsed. When I first went to treatment in 1989, I was motivated by the fact that Lou Reed and Dennis Hopper had gotten clean.
As a former drug abuser, Goldin in particular should not have been prescribed OxyContin as she was in a known high-risk group. The brain remembers, she says.
Her campaign is a call to arms, to fans of Prince, fans of mine, directors of art museums, doctors, anyone who has lost someone to opioids or knows someone who is struggling, which includes most people in America now, musicians and artists, a call for solidarity.
Goldin has not been taking many pictures recently, although she took some self-portraits while she was addicted to OxyContin, and some pictures of her drug gear. She has been drawing and painting, and in a small room next to the living room is a self-portrait, with her distinctive auburn curly hair and flinty look, but with the mouth sewn shut. I painted that over the new year, it was how I felt at the time. I was lonely, she says. She is looking forward to making a documentary on the opioid crisis. The project is in its earliest stages, but she says she got into photography originally, as a teen, because she wanted to make films. The closest she got at her creative peak was her many slideshows, most famously The Ballad of Sexual Dependency.
She is also known for photo-graphing the drag queens she lived with for three years in the 70s. They were so vivid, so beautiful, so funny. The humour ran riot. I think humour is one of lifes survival mechanisms; it was another level and I was in love with them, and I didnt analyse, I was just living, she says. And snapping. She has always said that her camera was merely an extension of her arm, although the undeniable craft in her framing, and the raw intensity, elevates it from documentary to art.
She captured such intimacy sometimes awful intimacy around the sex, the highs, rows, domestic violence and half-naked hanging out that was a way of life for her and her friends, many of whom she has now outlived by decades. But she points out that she would show her subjects their pictures and they could ask her not to publish them if they didnt like them. Integrity, integrity, integrity, she says. That word brings her back to the opioid crisis.
Purdue Pharma has no integrity, its the opposite, the evil manipulation of vulnerable people. Its disgusting, she says.
Goldin lights another cigarette and takes a swig of ginger ale. Her oil painting may have its mouth sewn shut, but the flesh and blood Nan Goldin will be heard.

Earning Online Education Attractive
All around the Earth, that the numbers of men and women in college at different degrees takes pyramidal form. There are enormous numbers in the basic, but as they advance, the numbers fall, leaving only a couple in higher education. In the United States, some 65 million pupils were expected to register from K to K12 at the autumn of 2015. At precisely the exact same period, it had been anticipated that 20.2 million will be attending Colleges and Universities. It's estimated that 25 percent of new high school pupils in the U.S.A aren't able to graduate. For new students who enter schools or colleges 1 out of 3 will probably not make it into next year. This dropout out speed interrupts national growth, because a lot of do not get the complete instruction they will need to be operational in society. National development could be hugely jeopardized, if more adults get instruction, so that they become operational in society.
I am not stating that all adults that weren't fully educated aren't playing significant roles in society. There are rather prominent people in society that dropped out of college at a certain degree. Bill Gate, Mark Zuckerberg, Oprah Winfrey, by Way of Example, at some stage dropped from college. Though this list isn't exhaustive, the variety of folks who fell out of college or chose not to get increased education and became effective are still comparatively few. For many who fell out or stopped education, and couldn't become effective in their professions, it was because they lacked the knowledge they had to develop their own potential. If you check the background of people who despite falling out or quitting education are very effective, you'd find that seemed to have discovered their life's goal and pursued those goals and, even furthermore, they obtained some type of education afterwards.
Instruction as all of us know is a lifelong action. At any given time, if you fell out of college or obtained honors in your graduation, you'd require instruction. The college dropout who has found himself a vocation or obtained employment demands schooling so he can be productive, the dropout who's attained the requirement to college but has'grown past school going age' and needs to college clearly needs schooling, supervisors in addition to employees need additional education so as to maintain pace with the current fast changing world and profit improved wages and standing respectively. The conventional schooling dependent society we've made for ourselves and believes the'best', limits our pursuit for ongoing education. For a lot of folks, formal schooling ended the day that they dropped out or graduated from High School, College or University, although, engineering makes it feasible for us to sit in our homes and get superior instruction.
As technology - computers and internet connectivity - replaced bodily classrooms and made it feasible to study by distance in real time, it seemed the problem of constant education for everybody, for example, dropout and the working class have already been solved. It seemed, and still does, that the instructor need not depart his pupils, use for study-leave or leave of absence to pursue additional education. It seemed that the fifty-year-old girl who fell out of college many decades ago could now college from house and it seemed the father could find out exactly what his daughter is studying at College with the exact same apparatus he uses to telephone her. That's what it seemed. Individuals who dropped out of college because of problems of finance and haven't since had a breakthrough wouldn't benefit, and people having the cash wouldn't wish to place their money into a certification companies and academicians alike could frown upon. So small seem to have changed for both of these groups of individuals, though online Colleges and Universities abound.
Two prime problems would be to blame. To begin with, online instruction is too expensive for its target group of students and secondly, there's the understanding that online Colleges and Universities don't offer holistic instruction like the conventional Colleges and Universities. According to Ed Vosganian - founder and CEO of College Funding 123, the price of on-campus University for undergraduate is estimated at 42,000 bucks while for the exact same group it cost approximately 21,000 bucks for online universities. By comparison we'd state it cost much less to research via online. However, we need not eliminate sight of people who largely register in online University. It's people from the lower and middle classes who elect for online universities. They comprise; the worker who has forfeited pleasure for greater qualification in exchange for greater salary, the jobless who would like to acquire employable skills, the dropout who wishes to return to college in the expectation that there'll be a brighter future, and the folks residing in the distant region of the planet, particularly in the developing world, who do not have the money to pay prices and so would need to learn and operate concurrently. To those 21,000 dollars is cash so enormous, it's quite hard to raise. You will find individuals of this higher income category who enrol in online universities, but online learning isn't popular among these because of reduced prestige as well as the myths related to online education. The internet institutions will inform youthey wouldn't place anything in your certification to prove that you obtained a unconventional instruction. This type of advertisement talks of how society worth online instruction. Online education is thought to be a inexpensive method of becoming'watered down' instruction. Online Colleges and Universities were recently considered degree mills. This perception exists, though empirical evidence tells us there is not any disparity in quality of pupils from conventional Colleges and Universities on a single hand and internet Colleges and Universities around another hand. The internet Universities and Colleges do their very best to create online learning esteemed and bring down research price, but they can't do it independently. With government intervention online learning may get prestigious and lower and middle course friendly.
Government should offer a national platform for internet education, subsidize certification, and grant scholarships and student loans for students in online Colleges and Universities. A national framework to direct the operations of online schools and universities ought to be instituted from the state, through the Department of Education or the appropriate government agency. This frame, which might be descriptive rather than prescriptive in character would explain, by way of instance, the minimal classes to be taken at a specified degree, and the general style of performance of online universities and schools without prescribing specific classes or manner of operation. Accreditation isn't only laborious for internet Colleges and Universities; it's also pricey. This price is passed to pupils, souring up app fees. In case the government makes the decision to absorb half of the price of certification, even though there's not any guarantee that the program fees will be payable, the application fee could be reduced somehow. Finally, the majority of the pupils who opt for online schools and universities don't get scholarships and student loans in the country. People who get something don't find massive scholarships and student loans such as their counterparts in conventional Colleges and Universities. Authorities must make scholarships and pupils loans available to pupils of online Colleges and Universities as it will for pupils in conventional Colleges and Universities.
The consequences of the interventions could definitely be awesome. Providing a national platform for internet instruction would eliminate the false negative impression people have about online instruction. Many believe online learning is simple as well as the amount of credits required are far less compared to those taken in conventional learning preferences. This believing is different since there are a few badly designed online courses where certification are given after only a few missions are submitted. Such practices could be stopped, when a federal framework is designed and operationalized. A national framework provides authenticity to online learning, as a federal benchmark for online would need to be stuck to and consequently no online college or college could simply sell certification. Subsidizing Accreditation will yield three outcomes. The most apparent is thatit might decrease program fees because sum to maneuver into the pupils would be . Subsidizing certification fees would urge online Colleges and Universities to seek certification from accrediting bodies comprehend by the Department of Education or the proper state agency. Though certification isn't mandatory in certain areas of the Earth, such as the usa, some job that need state licensing wouldn't accept diploma from non-accredited Colleges and University. Prospective online learners are, typically, worried about if the can certainly work with their certifications. Government intervention could get rid of this stress and take out the negative perception people have about online instruction too. Government interventions in the kind of loans and scholarship will ease the fiscal burden and also make it feasible for people who hitherto wouldn't have the ability to college to achieve that. In sum, government intervention could go a ways to make an educated society by allowing many people to get higher education.
There are several people wanting to secure higher education through internet Colleges and Universities in order that they get knowledge and skills, or increase their understanding and abilities but can't do due to the price or the doubt of the acceptability of their certification. Government intervention in the kind of national frame for online universities and schools, subsidizing certification cost and providing scholarships and student loans will open the doorway for people who wish to research from home. Government intervention may provide the confidence that online instruction is as great as traditional university or college learning, and that their certification would be approved occupations that require state certification. It would alleviate the pressure on centers in conventional Colleges and Universities, create the well-educated citizenry required for national growth and convert the present pyramidal shape to a'near' cylinder.

Lady Spy
by Linda Fetterly Root
When the new Spanish ambassador Don Pedro de Zuniga arrived in London in the early autumn of 1605, he was given the names of seven individuals who were 'pensioners' of the King of Spain, presumably aristocrats who had rendered service to the Hapsburgs. The names were not made public nor were they presumed to have been revealed to King James.
THE LIST OF SEVEN
Henry Howard, Earl of Northampton
Charles Blount, Earl of Devonshire
Thomas Sackville, Earl of Dorset
Robert Cecil, Earl of Salisbury, the king's First Minister.
Catherine Howard, Countess of Suffolk, Chief Lady-in-Waiting to the queen; wife of a principal peer.
Sir William Monson, Diplomat
Jean Drummond, first lady of the Queen's Bedchamber
This was a time in English history when aligning with the Spanish was a precarious course of action. The years between the appearance of the Armada off the Lizard in 1588 and the peace overtures of 1604 were not nearly enough to erase the terrors of the Armada years from the collective English memory. And if that were not concern enough, two months after the list came into the ambassador's hands, the Spanish threat emerged again in the wake of the Gunpowder Treason. Anti-Spanish sentiment was again stoked and the new ambassador was forced into self-imposed house arrest at Spanish Place, guarded by a cordon of English soldiers. It would not have served the fragile peace had it become know that seven strategically-placed personalities at the Stuart court were in the pocket of the Spanish.
Of the seven on the list, two were women. Six were either participants or, as was the case with the Duchess of Suffolk, closely associated with principals in the negotiations of the Treaty of London of 1603, an instrument that ended hundreds of years of hostilities and decades of actual war between the English and the Spanish. If the seven names were to be made public, the first six could stand behind an argument that King Philip III was merely thanking them for the successful conclusion of an enterprise as beneficial to England as it was to Spain.
Seated at the English side of the negotiating table at Somerset House where the Treaty of London was signed were Thomas Sackville, Charles Blount, Henry Howard and none other than Sir Robert Cecil, who was considered one of England's vociferous critics of the Spanish. The only male of the seven missing from the table was Sir William Monson, who had gone to Flanders as escort to the retiring leader of the Spanish-Hapsburg delegation, Don Juan de Velasco, Duke of Frias, who while in the portrait, was too ill to participate in the negotiations. Monson had strong personal ties to the Hapsburgs and his status as a pensioner should come as no surprise. Nor is Catherine Howard's inclusion a puzzle. Long before the autumn of 1605, she was a well known conniver with a propensity to assert herself into most matters of consequence, a Howard, and the wife of one of England's highest ranking peers. Sir Thomas had the title but his Countess had the brains. BUT, WHO WAS JANE DRUMMOND?
To the casual historian, there is no plausible explanation for the inclusion of the last name on the list unless she was a spy. Jane (Jean) Drummond, the only Scot on King Philip's secret list was an unmarried woman and the third child of a well regarded but remote Scottish Earl. What prestige she may have acquired as sister-in-law of Alexander Seton, the powerful Scottish Chancellor, faded when Seton set aside Lilias Drummond for the same reason Henry Tudor discarded Queen Catherine for Anne Boleyn. Yet, while Lady Jane seemed the least likely to be of value to the Hapsburgs, hers was among the largest grants. The grants were given at a time when Philip III was nearly bankrupt, which begs the question: what services did Lady Drummond perform to warrant extravagant gifts and an annual stipend of 2000 Felipes?
Unfortunately, one of the most comprehensive sources of information regarding the influence of Queen Anne's ladies, The Politics of Female Households: Ladies-in-waiting across Early Modern Europe, (an anthology edited by Nadine Akkerman and Birgit Houben) is priced out of the budget of most researchers. Also, as pointed out by Linda Porter in her journal article, The Politics of Female Households, (History Today, Vol. 64, Issue 6, June 2014), the anthology has the weaknesses of having been written by graduate students of varying talents and being poorly edited. However, the portion dealing with the household of Anne of Denmark has much to offer about Lady Jane which is not found elsewhere.
Nevertheless, it includes little of her history before Lady Jane Drummond accompanied Anne to England in 1603. For that, one must delve into the Scottish history of the years from the time of the King's marriage to Anne of Denmark and his ascension to the English crown when Elizabeth Tudor died in 1603. By then, Anne had already shown a preference for staffing her household with Catholics. Some modern historians argue that she did so with the king's knowledge and half-hearted consent. The popular opinion is he advised her to be discreet about it and agreed to look through his fingers if she kept her Catholic leanings in the closet. The king's ambivalence toward his wife's Catholicism raises the question of just whose agent Lady Drummond may have been. Recent research suggests if not an agent, she was at least a conduit for exchanges between the Stuart monarchy and the Catholic kings of early modern Europe which James wished to seduce to the peace table. Those who follow the politics of James Stuart's last few years as Scotland's resident king will recall he often lived apart from his Danish bride, Anne, whose sons were expected to live in separate households, a tradition which the queen found abhorrent and which caused an estrangement between the royals. When she was separated from her firstborn, Prince Henry Frederick, she launched an aborted attempt to kidnap him while James was occupied elsewhere. As was his nature, the king forgave her, but their relationship was never quite the same. As a part of her dowry, she had an entitlement to lands at Dunfermline and established a residence in the Abbey Palace where her second son, Charles I, was born. He was a sickly child, and thus there was no pressure from the Scottish lords to separate him from his mother. There was no political advantage and considerable risk in obtaining guardianship of a child who would likely die.
At the time of Charles Stuart's birth, the king's Scottish counselor and confidante, Alexander Seton, was still married to his first wife Lilias Drummond. They, too, had established a palatial residence at Dunfermline. It was likely during her confinement before the birth of her second son that the Queen met Lilias's sister Jane. At any rate, a few months after James Stuart's arrival in England to ascend the English throne in the spring of 1603, His Majesty ordered his consort to gather up their remarkable son Prince Henry Frederick and travel south, leaving unappealing, crippled Charles behind with his Chancellor and his second wife, Grizel Leslie. Queen Anne selected Jane Drummond to accompany her to Stirling to collect Prince Henry Frederick, heir-apparent to three kingdoms and a well-known crowd-pleaser.
By then she and Lady Jane were fast friends and co-conspirators. In the autumn of 1603 when the Queen arrived in London, one of Jane's first assigned duties was to staff the queen's household with priests disguised as servants, with the queen's confessor posing as her Majesty's falconer. According to research contained in the book edited by Nadine Akkerman, Lady Jane Drummond's activities on behalf of the Hapsburgs and the Vatican were likely instigated by the queen and possibly sanctioned by the king, who possibly used them as a conduit to the Catholic kings with whom he wished to reconcile. This viewpoint is consistent with recent research indicating James I aspired to a legacy as the monarch who brought peace to the modern states of Europe by minimizing the religious differences between Protestant rulers and the Catholic kings. (see King James VI and I and the Reunion of Christendom, W. B. Patterson, Cambridge Studies in Earl Modern British History, Cambridge University Press, 1997). Jane's relationship with the Spanish and likely, the Pope, were not the least bit casual. She had even been assigned the code name Amadis, from a character in a medieval romance novel. She was a single woman and could not have gained her pension as a means of exerting pressure on a well-placed husband, for she did not marry reformed Scottish reiver-cum-courtier, Lord Robert Kerr (later Earl of Roxburgh) until 1614, after his first wife died. Her stock in trade was her actual or perceived influence over the queen. Before he was replaced by Don Pedro Zuniga in 1605, the Spanish ambassador Don Juan de Taxis, Count of Villa Medina, personally requested Philip III to grant a stipend to Lady Drummond, citing the numerous times she had passed on valuable secret information. While the extent of her disclosures are not known, it is likely she was also used to pass messages to the Spanish from James I when he himself could not.
Anne of Denmark
After the discovery of the Gunpowder Treason in November 1604, the queen found it politically astute to cut back on her Catholic leanings, which made Jane's position critical insofar as it provided an avenue for the queen to maintain a clandestine contact with the Catholic European monarchies and the Vatican. However, the Queen and Jane had a a falling out in 1617 when Jane's husband, who was by then the Earl of Roxburghe, attempted to obtain the guardianship of Charles without first consulting either the king or the queen. The popular Henry Frederick had died in 1612, apparently of typhus, and control of adolescent Charles was indeed a power play characteristic of Lord Roxburghe. When Jane was expelled from the royal bedchamber, the Spanish discontinued the stipend, a rather clear statement of why it had been awarded in the first place. Logically, this should be the end of the story, but it is not. Jane Drummond did not disappear from the world of power politics when her relationship with Anne ended. By then, she had already gained the favor of the heir-apparent Charles. When he married the Catholic French princess Henrietta Maria, Jane's stars were in ascendance. She remained an important figure in the Court of Charles I until her death. The circumstances of her last mission were not fully known until last year when its details were reported in The Guardian.
THE DRESS:
The year 1642 found Jane Drummond, Countess of Roxburghe, in the household of yet another Stuart consort, Henrietta Maria, wife of ill-fated Charles I. She had known Charles since he was an infant in the Scottish household of Alexander Seton. Between the Setons and his mother, he had spent most of his early life in the care of Catholics, until he was placed in the care of Sir Robert Carey and his wife, Dame Robert. At some point after his marriage, Charles I wished to make the Countess of Roxburghe governess of his heir, the future Charles II, but the anti-Catholic faction at the English court balked. Nevertheless, Jane Drummond was appointed governess of his other children. Charles and Henrietta Maria's marriage is said to have become a love match, and the royal household, however stressed, was a happy one. Unfortunately, domestic harmony did not save Charles I from his shortcomings or his inability to adapt to change.

A scant few months before the outbreak of what became the English Civil War, the king's consort and a few of her most trusted ladies sailed from Dover to the Netherlands, ostensibly to deliver the princess Mary, who was five, to the protection of her betrothed, William of Orange. But that was not the true reason for the trip. Henrietta Marie was traveling to Europe to pawn the Crown Jewels, in order to finance a Royalist army. It was a highly dangerous mission, both practically and politically. Many of Charles's failings had been attributed to his Catholic consort. While the details of the mission are unclear, the fleet of twelve ships in the Consort's convoy was shipwrecked off the Dutch Island of Texel. The royal party either survived or was not at sea when the storm hit. Reports of the shipwreck are vague. With England soon to be at war, the event was overshadowed. However, in 2014, Dutch divers found the wreckage of one of the ships and among the items salvaged was an elegant dress, heavily embroidered in gold and silver threads and wonderfully preserved.

The discovery was not widely publicized until the origin of the items could be researched, but thanks to circumstantial evidence, a newly discovered letter from Charles I's sister Elizabeth of Bohemia, the Winter Queen, and the research of Nadine Akkerman and her colleague Helmer Helmers, the dress is accepted by most historians as a gown belonging to Jane Drummond, Countess of Roxburghe. The claim is largely based upon its dated style and large size. At the time of the shipwreck, the Countess was 46 years old, stout, and no longer a fashion trend-setter. Her inclusion on the mission is a testimony to the degree of trust and high esteem in which she was held by the Queen Consort and by King Charles, who sought to entrust her with his children. If the mission to pawn the Crown Jewels had been exposed, more than just gowns and trinkets would have been sacrificed. Jane Drummond, Countess of Roxburghe, died the following year. King Charles was beheaded at Westminster on January 31, 1649.
