MARCH Monthly Archive/ APRIL Update
Well, March was a better month for my writing, at least. Threw in two extra stories, so now I'm up by three weeks, and only had one story last month that I absolutely did not like. I'm also taking a few more days when writing some stories, and I feel like the quality has improved because of it.
On the more positive side, I blew up outta nowhere last month. Mostly on Tumblr, but Reddit showed me a little love too, and I gotta say it really made my month. I was just goofin' off at work when I saw a notice on my phone, and now there's definitely a video of me dancing like a kid on the security cameras. So thanks for that!
I'd also like to shout out to @agirlandherquill (Tumblr) & @kentuckyhobbit (Tumblr) for being my first followers! I hope you both enjoy the ride!
I'm also doing a new thing with these archive posts where I give you my "Best Foot Forward" story. Basically, if you had to read one story from me last month, the BFF would be it.
That being said, let's get to the archive:
|| || || || || || ||

Stated Writing: 03/10 Prompt: "You don't even know what's out there!" Prompt By: @seaside-writings (Tumblr)
S12/Wk-11: Scale-Bound [BFF]

Hello, hope you’re having a great day!
Since there has been no news about season 9 dvd/blu-ray release, should I expect not completing my collection? I’ve seen no release date or updates about dvd/blu-ray release and I am getting kind of worried we might not get them at all. Do you have any info on that? Since the season 10 poster is so cool I would love to see it as a dvd cover but because even season 9 isn’t out, I’m not so sure 😅
Sorry about my English and have a great final season! 😁
Hi anon! Sadly, there has been no new at all about an official Seasion 9 dvd/blu-ray release in the U.S. and if we haven't heard by now -- a good six months after it's usually released (or at least announced) -- I doubt we're getting one.
Some people have pointed me to a couple of Australian sites that appear to be selling some version of a S9 DVD for that region, and a couple of third-party sellers through Walmart and Ebay who claim to have DVD's, but none of those look official to me and I wouldn't trust them. There's usually no mystery about an official release - when it's released, it's released and there's a press announcement and a date and official pre-sales through big retailers like Amazon. They want to actually sell product if they print a blu-ray/dvd so there's no reason to bury it.
I think it's probably yet another sign of cost-cutting which is really unfortunate. I would love to have a full ten-season set in the end. And the "extras" such as the gag reel are always appreciated.
@friendshiptothemax if you have any insight on whether there will ever be a S9 DVD/blu-ray, we'd love to know.

the tagline for this season being “the first day of the rest of her life” which is a direct reference to lola’s “the first day of the rest of my life” caption under the photo she posted at the end of s6 before she went to rehab, and the s9 press release confirming that they’ll be exploring maya’s unhealthy coping mechanisms and all the trauma she’s buried.....i am on my knees begging them to not fuck this up

Hey!!
I am new to your tumblr but I read your fics all the time (and reread them more often than I should admit lol)
I think you’re really amazing!
I’m so relieved that you answer asks and discuss speculation because I really need someone to talk this through.
So, I have watched a couple of other thriller series along the same lines where the makers don’t have any issues killing off major characters off the show.
There are a couple of things that are happening in this show which I think (and I honest to god hope I’m wrong) are building up to them killing off Ressler.
They get together, they partially admit their feelings (which we’ve been waiting for too Damn long) - so they get closure. Ressler is in the hospital, they show him deteriorating, he goes into v-fib.
And all of this is not that much of a game changer but hear me out. The task force is being dismantled and they need to give the viewers sth that they won’t expect. And bring some new spice in s9. With Liz going full time into crime, it seems a lot easier for them to kill off Ressler.
My only counter debate to my point is that they would have killed him off the moment he got shot (like they did with Meera) rather than show him being treated.
I really need to know what you think. Please tell me he’s not gonna die cause honestly who on earth will watch the show then?
Tumblr media
Hi there! I have to say a special thank you to you, @alrightygirl, and to my anon (above) who I have lumped in, for the shoutouts on my stories. I came to Tumblr in the first place during the hiatus between S2/S3 in part because I realized some of my fav fanfic authors (@aussieokie !) were here so I am especially happy to read this.
I'm not sure people realize how much we fanfic writers thrive on feedback, and especially on the multi chapter works we invested so much time into. So thank you, and I have to say I really am looking forward to the end of the season so I can step away from the BTS hunt and my inbox and get back to just creating. Hopefully the writers will leave things in a good place in 8.22 so there's plenty to work with. Ok, on to the substance of your ask and I'll put in a jump because I can already tell this is getting long.
I really do NOT think Ressler will die. I didn't think so before 8x19 and I still don't think so after the "medical drama" of 8x20. Because that's what I think they're doing - they're creating drama because it's the end of the season and they want people freaking out and guessing over who will survive. Call it the curse of cable, or thrillers or whatever, but we as audiences have been conditioned to believe that major characters have to die every year, even if it's pointless.
The thing is, The Blacklist has never been that show. They have killed three "main characters" in the life of the show. Meera in S1 (and I later read Parminder only had a one-year deal), Tom in S5 (with huge fanfare and foreshadowing and an entire "hero" arc following a failed spinoff with a new series eagerly awaiting him at NBC), and Samar in S6 after the actress specifically requested to be released from her contract after S5 and gave them time to write her character an appropriate conclusion arc which also had huge foreshadowing.
Could they go a different route this year? Sure. We're late in the life of the show and twists and cliffhangers and budgets all come into play but the thing is - I just still really don't see it when it comes to Ressler.
For me, the characters' perspective is always paramount. What purpose would Ressler's death serve? It would make Liz more upset (because, you know, Sam, Tom, Katarina, her sister, her whole team weren't enough?). And other than that......?
The audience already knows the gravity of the stakes. So does Liz. So does every other character. The only purpose Ressler's death would serve that I see (and to be clear, I am focusing only on the characters in the show not the irrational fandom hate for his character) is to "punish" Liz more, to make her feel worse about what she's done, to deal another body blow on top of all that she's suffered already.
I don't think Liz needs that. (I'm positive nearly all of Reddit disagrees).
She turned herself in to Cooper because she recognized the bloodshed needed to end after she FEARED losing him. She stayed by Ressler's side and spoke her entire speech in the hearse and by his unconscious side because she can't handle losing him too. This is exactly the scenario the writers teased when Eisendrath teased all those months ago that maybe he would use her feelings for him to get her to come back.
Tumblr media
Source (X)
He didn't overtly "use" her feelings in the end because that is not Ressler. He is not that guy. But in the end, her feelings for him were EXACTLY why she turned herself in.
I don't think Liz doesn't need to be punished further or suffer more in anyone's eyes except those who still can't come to terms with her war against Red. I don't think the writers feel that way about her character. To the contrary, they introduced a hallucinated Kaplan to try to give her a pass and also had her give lengthy explanations to both Ressler and Aram defending her behavior. I think from all I have read and seen that the writers view Liz as a victim of circumstances caused by Red - something Cooper has also articulated to Panabaker along the way in defending why Liz has done what she's done under extraordinary circumstances. We can all agree or disagree on the why and the method and the extremes but the bottom line is that I think the writers still view Liz as more "victim" or "forced criminal" than diabolical villain so killing Ressler, on top of everyone else Liz has lost, is just another deep blow on top of all the blows that have turned her into who she is. I think we're past the point that that is necessary and we'll be even further past that point after 8.21/8.22 when Liz learns some truths.
This has gotten crazy long so I'll just add these final thoughts which I have also articulated in prior posts:
- I think if the writers were going to write out Ressler - an original character from the Pilot - they would do so with more hype and fanfare and story than what he's gotten this season. Sure he was present in 8x19 a lot but it was really Liz's story. She was the heroine saving him and moving them from place to place while he suffered. I think the writers have enough respect for Diego to give him at least as much substantial story as Tom and Samar got in their sendoffs if this was really the end. He's a good guy and a good character and he deserves more than for his final moments to be a quiet fade to black in Vfib in a hospital with only Park present (or even Liz present for a final, vague, goodbye). A show that can't do that isn't a show I'm interested in watching, you know?
- his agents congratulated him on the S9 renewal back when it was announced. Hardly an indicator that a major character is getting jettisoned.
-You'd also think, if he was leaving this season, that he'd be doing more to elevate his profile on social media like he did at the end of Homeland to gear up for a new gig. He's done NOTHING.
-Finally, there has been literally nothing in JB's recent interview with The Blacklist Exposed, any of the BTS, the press, the episode descriptions, the crew photos, or anything else to date to indicate that a major actor/character is leaving. I know people can hide the ball but usually in this show, something slips through. So far - nothing. (No, I don't take Megan's thank you's or wrap party photos that way).
Anyway, hopefully we'll all be here at this time next year (or a few weeks earlier if things are back to normal), analyzing S9 and all that has happened. Thanks for the ask!

I rewatched the finale, and I’m curious if all of Kim’s injuries will be addressed in the premiere. Everyone was focused on the gun shots and blood loss, but it seems like she had a broken leg from when Kent stomped on her, and he stomped on her chest and back as well. It seems likely she’d have broken ribs. In the promo, she’s on a vent, so she’s fairly bad off. I just don’t see how the writers gloss over this. She can’t be independent business as usual and back to work in a week. Thoughts?
I'm hoping it will be addressed. Like I know realistically they'll gloss over it more than we'd like, because that's shows for you. But I'm thinking-- hoping-- it'll be addressed in the premiere.
The press release said something about Voight and Adam trying to help Burgess, and I have a whole host of ideas of what this could mean, but I'm also hoping that it'll mean they're going to help what the next month or so of her life will look like, with her injuries.
Although, so, I had a dream Kim would be fucked up in the finale even before it was hinted at. And so I've been super attached to it being months long recovery, desk duty when she can go back to work before finally in the field. But this is a show, so they'll most likely shorten the recovery time, BUT I am thinking there's gonna be a time skip after ep1/2 maybe so they can have Kim in the field sooner while also having that they'd been a recovery process.
But injuries wise, Kim FOR SURE has broken ribs. I don't know if they'd give her a broken leg, even though it's quite likely, just because that can complicate things more. I don't really want to see her doing much high powered chases until at least half way through the series.
Although I will say, as someone who has chronic rib problems, there IS a lot you can do with fucked ribs. It hurts like a bitch and I can't see it passing a health exam but y'know. It hurts and you shouldn't do half the things I do but like if you want to fuck yourself over you can!!!
But yeah. I love whump, so I love thinking about Kim's injuries, and while I do think they'll address her not coming back to work immediately and most likely do a time skip, it won't be as long as we'd want or really addressed. Because look-- the show just doesn't do that. Kim was shot in S2, back the next episode, cleared. There's an implied time skip then, yet the rest of the show events (Lindsay is only just starting with the FBI) doesn't line up with that...so I wouldn't expect much!
I've been wanting to do a fic before s9 airs about Kim's recovery over months but I ran out of time, but you're making me wanna try and do it!!! And everything you mentioned was the injuries I was gonna do-- except I'd take out the broken leg bc that's kinda why I stopped trying to write it. My bestie broke her leg not long after I made the fic idea and it just felt like tempting fate (especially bc she had to have minor surgery on it) and she's fine now but it still makes me feel like I'm challenging the universe!!!
Thank you for this ask, I love getting into this sorts of stuff. And let me know if you'd want me to write her recovery as a fic bc that'll probably motivate me.

What fandom is the Quarantine WIP? Any details you care to share?
Quarantine is yet another of my Doctor Who WIPs, lol. I do have a bunch of unfinished stories in other fandoms too, but for this ask game I only listed out my DW fics, since that’s all I’ve been working on for the last year and a half or so.
Despite the name, I actually started Quarantine in early 2019, long before any of the pandemic stuff, so it’s unrelated to that. The set up is that sometime late s9-ish, Clara and the Doctor go to visit a planet populated by a race who look human but aren’t, and who are highly telepathic. Within five minutes of arriving, they run afoul of some local law or other and are promptly arrested and imprisoned together in a sealed room.
I have the first bit of this written, with the banter turned up to 11 12, so I’m just going to put a few hundred words of it under the cut, for anyone who is curious to hear more about this one. Thank you for the ask!
Ask me anything about my WIP fics!
Quarantine excerpt:
“So, bit of a ‘good news, bad news’ situation,” the Doctor said, removing his sonicglasses. “Good news: the replicator works and doesn’t seem intent on poisoning us. Bad news: the door isn’t just hidden, it appears to have never existed in the first place.”
“Meaning we’re stuck,” Clara said.
“It would seem so.”
“Could the wall be telepathic, like the replicator?” she asked, setting the glass of water on the table and returning to the Doctor’s side.
He raised his eyebrows, his expression telling her that the thought hadn’t occurred to him. Pocketing his sonicglasses, he reached out and pressed the pads to his fingers to the blank wall. He closed his eyes and leaned in, concentrating. Unconsciously, Clara leaned in as well, only to snap to standing when the Doctor yelped and leapt backwards from the wall.
“What happened?” she asked, concerned.
“It bit me,” he said, shaking out his hands and glowering at the wall.
“Seriously?”
“Telepathically. Kind of like touching a cattle fence, a quick jolt meant to scare.”
“Right, so, negotiating with the wall seems like a no-go.”
“Except that there was a message embedded in there...” He trailed off thoughtfully, raising one hand to press against the wall.
“Doctor—” Clara started, but didn’t get any further than that before the wall once again shocked him and the Doctor recoiled.
“Stop that!” he snapped at the wall, annoyed.
“Why would you go for seconds on the electrified wall?” she sighed.
“It’s not electrified, it’s tetchy. But more importantly, it’s trying to tell me something.”
Curious, Clara reached out towards the wall, but the Doctor smacked the back of her hand and she jerked it back towards herself instinctively. “Hey, ow!” she said, turning to him.
“And why are you trying to touch the electrified wall?” he demanded.
“You said it wasn’t electrified! And besides, I got the food replicator to work. Maybe the wall just doesn’t mesh well with all your alien weirdness.”
“My what?”
She waved vaguely at him. “Touch-telepath meets telepathic field not calibrated for touch-telepaths,” she reasoned. “Maybe it’s just information overload.”
“As far as the Nari are concerned, we’re both aliens,” the Doctor pointed out.
“And yet: food replicator success. I’m going to try it.”
“What if my superior Time Lord biology is protecting me from a much worse shock?” he countered. “What if it zaps you worse than it zapped me?”
Clara shrugged, undeterred. “If it knocks me out, try to catch me before I hit my head on the floor. And you know how to perform CPR, if it comes to that — my heart’s on the left, don’t forget.”
He sighed loudly. “Clara, we’ve talked about you going native.”
“And your duty of care, yes, I know. But we’re locked in this room with no way out, and the wall that used to be a door seems to want to tell us something. So unless you have a better idea...?”
The Doctor rolled his eyes and nodded, and then, inexplicably, began to hum Another One Bites The Dust.
She paused in the act of turning towards the wall and looked back at him. “What are you doing?” she demanded.
“Humming.”
“Yes, but why? Why that song?”
“It’s a hundred beats per minute, which is the optimal rhythm for CPR for humans. Just trying to make sure I have it in my head before the adrenaline kicks in and throws off my ability to sense the passage of time.”
Clara bit her tongue to keep from saying the first snarky thing that came to mind, and instead said, “Stayin’ Alive is generally the suggested song, I thought.”
He shrugged. “That’s a debate that’ll still be going on centuries from now. Listen, are you going to touch the tetchy wall or not?
“I was about to! Just hush!” she said, and reached out and placed her hand flat against the blank wall, steeling herself for a shock.
There was a faint buzzing beneath her palm, but nothing uncomfortable.
“Well?” the Doctor demanded. She shushed him again and put her other hand on the wall, trying to concentrate.
Hello and welcome! the wall said cheerfully inside her head.
“Clara—”
“Shh!”
You have been arrested! the wall went on. You have been found guilty of violating Societal Placidity Codes 338561.2 and 338561.3, and have been sentenced to indefinite quarantine. Details of your crime, your sentence, and the conditions of your potential release can be found in the dossier in the desk drawer.
“Check the desk drawer,” she told the Doctor, not moving from her spot as the wall’s message continued.
Sentences cannot be appealed or commuted, and quarantine will only be lifted once the terms of your release are fulfilled. It is society’s belief that you will benefit from this sentence, as will all those around you. We hope you enjoy your stay!
“That was some Hitchhiker’s Guide level weirdness,” Clara said as the message started again from the beginning, stepping away from the wall and turning to the Doctor. “What was in the desk drawer?”
“Papers detailing our arrest,” he replied, flipping through a folder thick with stacked papers.
“Right, that’s what the wall said, for violating some code or other. It said ‘indefinite quarantine’ but it also mentioned ‘conditions of your potential release’, so I’m hoping there’s something in all that paperwork that tells us how we get out of this.”
The Doctor continued to read, his scowl deepening.
“Well, what’s it say?” she demanded after half a minute more of silence. “What law did we break? And how did we manage to break a law that quickly in the first place?”
He glanced up at her, expression guarded and worried. “Like I said, the Nari are telepaths.”
“Right. We’ve established that, with the wall and the replicator and all.”
“But not just for interacting with technology. It’s something they can immediately sense about anyone in the nearby vicinity, like being able to smell someone’s overly strong perfume. We were in violation of code three-three-eight-whatever pretty much the moment we set foot on the planet, probably offended the first dozen people we passed on the street. Enough so that some sort of telepathic pulse must have gone through the local population, alerted the authorities, and here we are in legally-mandated isolation.”
“For the benefit of all those around us,” Clara said grimly, paraphrasing what the wall had told her. “What was the law, exactly?”
“Um.”
“Doctor,” she said in a warning tone.
“It’s, uhh...” He looked back down at the papers in his hands rather than meet her gaze. “There’s two, technically. Code 338561.2 is— the TARDIS is translating the exact phrasing here as ‘unresolved romantic tension,’” he said, voice crisp and quick. “And ‘61.3 is ‘unresolved sexual tension.’ Both of which I gather the Nari consider to be a sort of environmental pollutant, not infectious but detrimental to anyone forced to witness it. To the point that they believe the best way to address it is to quarantine the offenders together, away from the rest of society.”
“What,” she demanded, her voice flat.
The Doctor winced. “Clara, please don’t make me explain this in more specific terms.”
“No, please don’t,” she said quickly. “But how do we— What’s it say about the conditions of release?”
“Well, we have to, erm. Resolve it. To the satisfaction of our cell’s built-in telepathic sensors.”
“You have got to be kidding me.”
“Afraid not,” he said, still not meeting her gaze.
“Indefinite quarantine.”
“Yep.”
“Until we satisfy the conditions of our release.”
“It would seem so.”
Clara bit her tongue to keep from saying a great litany of utterly unhelpful things, finally settling on, “I’m going to go into the loo, close the door, and yell very loudly. Once I’m done with that, we can brainstorm ways to get out of this mess.”
“Of course, boss.”

Im really going to see Lola and Maya date other people, they will probably pair Maya with some of the girls who were introduced for season 10 or some random and you know I think they're going with the Lola x clement route like I know he was kissing sasha but thay doesn't matter also they already have some kind of backstory and the way he was deliberately mentioned in the s9 press release like we thought it was just to make Maya jealous but now... mm thinking thoughts
That would also explain why ayumi and flavie were kinda done with the couple cause they know what's coming and also those spoilers saying that they indeed are with other people next season...
i was just talking to someone about this like...it’s not *confirmed* they’ll have other love interests, but debbie confirming no s10 endgame does basically mean the options are just:
a) one or both of them end up single. so, the only character/s who don’t get happy romantic endings (because you know anais is getting one lmao, and no way they’re breaking tiffax/jolal up) are not just the only queer ones, but easily the most traumatized and mentally ill ones
b) one or both of them get new LIs. but because this is a sole POV format show and neither are central characters (nor even in the main friend squad), it’ll occur in the background with zero development and 2 secs of screentime. so whilst every other couple secured their endgame by the end of their own season and then got seasons of healthy development, they just got three seasons of ~toxic incompatibility set up before a last min, background endgame with new people.
that’s also what annoys me so so much about them going for the fundamentally incompatible route, because the nature of endgames on this show means whoever you end up with at the end is your ~true soulmate. so their soulmates aren’t each other (despite all their narrative parallels, backstories, symbolism setting that up), they’re...two randoms we’ve never met before but we’re supposed to believe are the loves of their lives? alright. like at least bring june back bc that’s someone we actually know and is fairly well matched with maya.
(and then there’s the very, very, very minor chance she was lying to not immediately invalidate what just aired like ‘dw!! s10 endgame is happening!!’, but that’d still just mean a rushed last min endgame in a single clip with zero development when they had a whole season to focus on them and wasted it lol. like idc if they kiss at the end of s10!! LET THEM TALK.)

hi! :) i was wondering if you could write a thing where it's either scully's or mulder's birthday and they're not looking forward to it but the other helps make it nice anyway? my own birthday is coming up and my friends won't be able to be there, and it would be unhealthy to be around my family, so reading something like that would be lovely. it's totally fine if you don't find the time though!! you're really awesome either way!
I hope this is in time, and that you have a great birthday. This is set in a somewhat happier universe than the one we got, where “William” never happened, but the rest of s9 did.
mature/explicit | 1.6k words | angst, au, fluff
February 23, 2004
The floor was cold and the sink was full of dirty dishes. She hadn’t washed her hair in three days and kept her robe pulled tight around her, almost always. Like most of the places they’d been, this cabin didn’t feel much like home. She was tired, she was cold, and she missed her mother.
From the living room came a loud racket: a bucket of toys dumped out on the floor and a little voice saying “Oh maaaan.” His favorite game, and one for which she’d nearly broken an ankle more than once—scattered trains and legos moving as they would across the rough floor into unseen places. Scully took her cup of coffee into the room where her son played.
William smiled when he saw her. “What’s cookin good lookin?” He said, a new phrase from his father, and she smiled in spite of the fog that seemed to have settled around her.
“Watch those trains,” she said. “They like to hide, and I don’t want to step on them.”
The boy nodded and scooped to the far radius of his dump site.
This space wasn’t designed for wintering. The walls were too thin. A crack under the door led a frigid trail of air across the uninsulated wood floor. They had to keep the water on a drip at night or the pipes would freeze. Unthinking, Scully reached and pulled a small blanket around her son’s shoulders. Just in time, too, because the door flew open and Mulder came in, carrying a large armload of wood. She hurried to close the door behind him, for which he mumbled a thanks.
When he’d dropped the armload by the stove, sending a shower of splinters in a small rain around the pile, he brushed himself off and moved toward her. “Oh hey,” he said, as if just noticing her.
She smirked. “Hey.”
He tugged on the belt of her robe, pulled her up against him. “Today’s the day, huh? Big day? Big four-oh?”
Her eyes narrowed. “I don’t want to talk about it.”
He took her in his arms and began dancing, rocking his hips and clasping her hand. “Is it everything you imagined?” There was no music so he hummed. “Is your life the dream you wanted?”
Behind her eyes, the sting of tears. He didn’t mean to be cruel, she knew, but it felt that way nonetheless. Scully pulled away from him and took her coffee mug back to the kitchen for a warm up. He followed a few seconds later, but she didn’t turn to meet his eyes.
“Scully,” he said.
She clenched and unclenched her fists beside the coffee pot.
“Dana, hey,” he tugged her around and tilted her face up, palms cool and a little rough. She didn’t want to cry in front of him, but this day had shaken her harder than expected.
“I’m just tired,” she managed.
“Tired of me?”
She shook her head, then let it fall against his chest. He smelled like musty wood and the dried lichen that grew on its outsides. He smelled like the earthy periphery of civilization: wild. She buried her nose in him. “Never you,” she said. “Of this.”
Mulder’s arms circled her, heavy and strong. It would only be a few moments before William plowed into their legs to complete their circle, demanding attention and probably snacks. Before that happened, though, Mulder tilted her face up and kissed her. “Have a bath,” he said. “Get dressed. I have a surprise.”
He made her pack a bag, and then they drove and drove while he refused to answer her Mulder, where are we going? over and again. He looked like the cat who ate the canary, eyeing her over the center console while he broke sunflower seeds between his teeth like they were green agents on their first case and not exhausted outlaws with a three-year-old. “You’ll see,” he said.
“We’re near Washington,” Scully observed. There was a tinge of worry in her voice. They hadn’t skirted this close to the federal government in two years of running, and she couldn’t imagine what would bring them here now. Mulder only made a non-committal sound of acknowledgement.
It was near dark, and William had long ago fallen asleep in the back seat when they finally made the turn off a country road. At the end of a long driveway was a small house, lit yellow from the inside, one porch-light glowing. Scully’s fear grew. They’d rarely made contact with anyone, and never this close to DC. “Mulder, who lives here?” She asked.
Again, he made no comment, but pulled to a stop in front of the house where there was one other car already parked: a newer model Subaru, gray. He turned in his seat to rub William’s knee. “Hey buddy. Time to wake up.” The child stirred and opened blue eyes. He stretched, yawned, made a whimpering sound of frustration at his stiff little limbs.
“Mulder, is it safe?”
He only smiled at her. “Yeah.” He climbed out and unlatched his son from the back seat, carrying William in one arm and the boy’s small duffel over the other shoulder. Scully checked the clip of her gun and left her bag in the car, but Mulder only shook his head at her. Free hand on her back, he led her up the steps.
“Where are we?” William asked.
Mulder kissed the boy’s cheek as he knocked on the door. “Home,” he said, watching Scully’s eyes narrow in suspicion.
Before she could question him, though, the door swung open and Maggie Scully stood before them. The older woman’s hands came to her mouth in joy and sadness and the (at last!) release of desperate anticipation. “Oh my God, Dana,” she said.
Scully’s face crumpled. “Mom?”
The inside of the house was warm and smelled of real food, not like the aluminum-tinged canned goods, warmed in an undersized microwave, that they’d grown so accustomed to. There was baked ziti and salad and fresh bread and even a cake—at the sight of which, William’s eyes had nearly bulged from his head.
After the two women had fallen into each other’s arms where they hugged and cried and cried and hugged and Mulder had cleared his throat and swiped at his own eyes, Maggie had scooped up her sleepy grandson to lavish him with two years worth of affection at once. Dana had turned to Mulder, grabbed his face with both hands, and kissed him hard, at which he’d laughed, but kissed her back soundly.
“How long were you planning this?” She whispered into his mouth.
He nibbled her bottom lip, kissed her nose. “About two months,” he said. “Happy birthday.”
The house was theirs. A real house in one place, just two short hours from Maggie. It had three bedrooms and a full kitchen and a barn out back. Dana Scully shook with the joy of it, could hardly eat her dinner without the tears coming again. They would stay a few days, then go back for their things, but Maggie (with the help of Walter Skinner) had brought many of their stored objects here: small domestic touches that reminded them of who they’d been, of the promise that had returned to their lives.
William slept in a room full of stars, of planets on his bedspread and dinosaur sheets that he’d bounced and bounced on, yelping with delight. Mulder pulled Scully to their bedroom, to their bed that would remain theirs, for the rest of their lives if they wanted. She was cast in soft light by the bedside lamp, eyes shining above her navy sweater. Mulder touched her face and the whole room hummed.
“This was the best birthday I ever had,” she whispered, unable to stop the subtle curl of her lips.
Mulder tugged at the marled cotton of her top. “It’s not over yet.”
“My mom’s just down the hall,” she said, a half-hearted warning, but let him tug the garment off anyway. She did the same for him, tugging and pushing at fabric, until they both stood naked in their very own room. His palms slipped over her breasts, pulled at her lower back so his hardening cock angled warm into the skin of her belly. He kissed and kissed her until she pulled him to the mattress, scooted back so he could lay atop her and press her down into soft cotton. She studied his face over hers while his fingers traced her nipples, brushed down her ribs, splayed across her thigh that lifted along his waist. There was a sprinkling of gray hairs near his temples, soft lines at his eyes: the trace evidence of their hard years together, and so beautiful. She arched her back to feel the skin of their middles touch and smiled when he did the same. His fingers dipped between her legs and came up slick.
“This is what you want too?” She asked him, knowing he’d understand she meant more than just her body: the house, the stillness, the solid ground beneath their feet.
“More than anything,” he said. His fingers dipped again and she gasped. They moved lower, moved inside her, and she clenched around him, slipped her hand to palm the silk of his own straining sex. “I love you,” he told her.
Scully’s breath caught. Her heart pounded; she raised her head to capture his lips while she angled his cock toward the apex of her legs. They were words he held dear, even now in their shared life. He parsed them out carefully, offering them like rare gems only when they could carry the proper weight of their meaning. He lived them every day in his gentle actions, but spoke them so seldom that they always felt like gifts. Scully captured them in her own mouth now, as she pulled his body into hers, answering with her skin and her bones and her quick-pulsing blood. The thought of their shared years, the tricksy slippage of time that made her feel old, drifted away under the weight of his body and his love. He’d found her a home, and with it they’d found a future.
