Now, BJP eyes Telangana, TN; decides to go all out
Tumblr media
NEW DELHI: After consolidating its presence in the northeastern and eastern regions where it was considered a fringe outfit until a couple of years ago, BJP is now pulling out all stops to make electoral gains in south Indian states like Telangana and Tamil Nadu. Having won the Dubakka assembly bypoll in Telangana recently, the party’s poll managers see better prospects in the 2023 assembly polls for which it is poised to use the upcoming Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation polls for which general secretary Bhupendra Yadav has been appointed in charge. Karnataka health minister K Sudhakar, Maharashtra MLA Ashish Shelar and Gujarat secretary Pradipsinh Vaghela will assist Yadav as co-in charges for the GHMC polls. Home minister Amit Shah was in Chennai on Saturday to galvanise party cadres before the state assembly polls. Alarmed over BJP’s full throttle effort to challenge his hegemony, TRS president and CM K Chandrasekhar Rao has announced to mobilise a pan-India front against BJP. He has already announced a grand meeting of parties opposed to BJP in Hyderabad after which a nation-wide campaign will be launched against the saffron party. Till now, TRS had adopted a soft approach towards BJP, particularly on legislative business in Parliament. Barring a few occasions, TRS, which has five MPs in Rajya Sabha in nine in Lok Sabha, has been supportive of the government. However, BJP seems ready to forego TRS’s support and sees the GHMC polls as an opportunity to prepare the ground for the 2023 assembly polls. The Dubbaka win has bolstered BJP’s confidence as the constituency was considered a stronghold of the KCR family. The GHMC polls are politically significant as its jurisdiction spreads across four districts – Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri and Sangareddy – which have 24 assembly and five Lok Sabha constituencies. After winning four LS seats in 2019 polls, BJP’s expectations have soared in Telangana. However, it is yet to make its presence felt in Tamil Nadu and it has started preparing for next year’s polls.

Protests erupt across India against CAA; 3 killed - india news
Tumblr media
Two persons were killed in Mangaluru, Karnataka and one person died in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, due to gunshot wounds sustained during nationwide protests held against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the proposed pan-India National Register of Citizens (NRC) on Thursday.Jaleel (49) and Nausheen (23) died after receiving firearm injuries, as the police sought to control protests that took place across multiple cities in Karnataka, including Mangaluru. In Lucknow, Mohd Wakeel, a resident of Hussainabad, died as police cracked down on protesters in the capital city of UP. The Director General of Police however said that the police has nothing to do with Wakeel’s death, and that an investigation will be carried out in this matter.Protests were held across 56 cities in 24 states and Union Territories on December 19, leading to the imposition of Section 144 — which prevents the gathering of four or more persons in a given place as a riot-prevention measure — in many parts of the country, including Delhi, several cities of Karnataka such as Bengaluru, Mangaluru, and Mysuru, as well as all the districts of Assam. Mobile services, voice calls and internet services were suspended in parts of the country, including in the Northeast. Police vs protestersSeveral persons, including policemen were injured in violence in parts of UP, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Gujarat during the day-long protest over the new citizenship law. Police opened fire in Mangaluru after confronted by stone-pelting protesters, as a result of which a resident of the port area, 49-year-old Jaleel and a resident of Bengre, 23-year-old Nausheen were critically injured, and later succumbed to their wounds. Manguluru police commissioner P S Harsha told the media that the police were forced to open fire in self-defence, and that 20 policemen have been seriously injured. Police have imposed curfew in the city till Friday midnight. The UP police confirmed that 112 people were arrested in Lucknow after they participated in the protests. At least 16 policemen, including ADG Lucknow SN Sabat and IG Lucknow SK Bhagat, were injured in Lucknow while two cops were injured in Sambhal, police said.Around the country, hundreds of protesters were detained. About 100 students from Maulana Azad Urdu University, Central University Hyderabad and Osmania University detained in Hyderabad; noted historian Ramachandra Guha, Congress legislator Sowmya Reddy and MLA-elect Rizwan Arshad, as well as Gandhian activist and theatre personality Prasanna were detained in Bengaluru; Swaraj India president Yogendra Yadav, former Patiala Parliamentarian Dharamvir Gandhi, former National Advisory Council member Harsh Mander, lawyer activist Prashant Bhushan and social activist John Dayal were among those detained in Delhi.Various student groups, civil society groups, ordinary citizens and Opposition political parties participated in protests on Thursday to condemn the CAA, the proposed all-India NRC as well as the violence which occurred in Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), a university in Delhi, and Aligarh Muslim University on December 15. Police had entered JMI and AMU and assaulted students and fired tear gas shells at them. Over 50 JMI students were detained, and several injured. In most locations, including Delhi and Mumbai, protests were peaceful as thousands came out into the streets. In Rajasthan, a hundreds-strong protest in Jaipur progressed peacefully, a senior police officer said. Protests were also held in Sikar and Ganganagar at the call of the Left parties. The protests were peaceful and there were no reports of imposition of section 144 or suspension of internet services in the state. Peaceful protests were also held in the Jammu and Kashmir, Dehradun and Simla. In Chandigarh, Muslim outfits were joined by students and Sikh outfits to register their dissent. Protests at Parivartan Chowk, Madeyganj and Satkhanda localities in Lucknow turned violent, with demonstrators lobbing stones at the police, and the cops retaliating with batons, tear gas shells, water cannons and alleged gunfire. Violence was also reported from two other districts in UP, in Sambhal and Amroha. In Sambhal, a group of Samajwadi Party (SP) protestors set a UP Road Transport Corporation bus on fire, the police said. “One cannot indulge in violence in the name of protest. We will take strict action against such elements,” UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath said.At AMU, teachers took out a silent march. “We feel that we are fighting for the idea of India as envisaged by the founding fathers of the nation. This is not a struggle for the rights of any particular community,” AMU Teachers Association secretary, Professor Najmul Islam said.In Bihar, members of Left-wing student organisations squatted on railway tracks at Rajendra Nagar Terminus early in the morning, while hundreds of activists of Jan Adhikar Party (JAP), floated by former MP Pappu Yadav burnt tyres on an adjacent road, police said. In Jehanabad, which had been a stronghold of the ultra-Left movement in Bihar, CPI(ML) activists disrupted traffic on national highways. Violent turnThe Gujarat Police used baton-charge at Sardar Baug and Shah Alam, the two localities in Ahmedabad city, on Thursday after alleged stone pelting. Police claimed that 14 policemen were injured. “Despite repeated requests, the protestors refused to disperse and started pelting stones in which police personnel got injured. We had to use force to disperse the unruly crowd,” said Ashish Bhatia, Ahmedabad police commissioner. Protests in West Bengal, Assam and Meghalaya were largely peaceful even though rallies were taken out to oppose CAA and NRC. In Chandigarh and Jammu, the Left and Congress workers held protest rallies.Police reportedly resorted to a lathi charge to disperse a crowd after stone pelting created panic in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, said a police officer who didn’t wish to be quoted. The ruling BJP and the government maintained there won’t be any rethink on implementation of the new citizenship law. Slamming the opposition for protesting against the new law, BJP working president J P Nadda said on Thursday that the CAA will be implemented, and that the National Register of Citizens will also be brought in.“India today has the ignominy of being the largest internet shutdown in the world... This is worse than Emergency,” Sitaram Yechury, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader, who was detained in Delhi, said.Earlier this month, the Parliament passed the amended act to allow undocumented migrants from six communities — Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, Christian, Parsi, and Jain — to stay in India and get citizenship if they claim religious persecution. This provision is valid for people who entered India before December 31, 2014. (With inputs from HTC in regional bureaus and agencies) Read the full article

Dentsu Aegis Closes Amplifi in Australia
Tumblr media
Dentsu Aegis Network recently announced that it will be closing Amplifi. Amplifi which is the network’s media innovation and investment division will be closed and absorbed into the network’s media brands. The latest news falls in line with the rest of the restructuring plans Dentsu Aegis Network is doing across the Asia Pacific. This change would be implemented in the coming months and would see Amplifi being integrated back into the DAN media brands.
Tumblr media
About Amplifi
Amplifi consolidates the Dentsu Aegis network’s media trading and investment management and forms media partnerships. It was launched in Australia in 2014 and it works with DAN’s programmatic buying agency, Amnet and content marketing agency, The Story Lab. Now the agency will be a part of the DAN media brands.
Dentsu Aegis Network Restructuring Plans
They recently announced that they will split its APAC business into three clusters. These clusters will be named Greater North, Greater South and ANZ. The Greater North will consist of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea. While the Greater South will include India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia and Myanmar. Finally, the ANZ will consist of Australia and New Zealand. The split saw a lot of major changes to the brand’s management structure.
Dentsu Aegis Network’s New Management Structure
As a result of the split, DAN promoted Ashish Bhasin to the chief executive officer of the expanded region of Greater South. They tasked Takaki Hibino to oversee Greater North in the interim, in addition to his role leading the regional business. For the ANZ business, they retained Henry Tajer as the head. This led to Phil Teeman, the former DAN Singapore and South East Asia chief executive exiting the business. Others who left the business include Rob Hughes, the former DAN North Asia chief executive and DAN China chief executive Susana Tsui. Sunil Yadav, the former president for APAC at Amplifi, Kristian Barnes, the former chief client officer, and media chairman at DAN, and Sean O’Brien, the former chief executive of Posterscope and MKTG, also left the business. Right before announcing the restructuring plan, they announced that Nick Waters, who was the chief executive of APAC, will be departing. He departed to take on the role of executive chairman for the UK and Ireland. They then promoted Audrey Kuah to the role of executive director of media business for APAC. In addition to this new appointment, she will still carry out her current responsibilities. She is currently the managing director of the network’s Global Data Innovation Centre. via Today Bharat nbsp;Always heavily loaded in favour of BJP and its star candidate Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congressrsquo; decision of not fielding Priyanka Gandhi has ended any kind of contest for the seat. The Congress party has fielded local strongman Ajay Rai who had fought against Modi in 2014 also and had come third after Arvind Kejriwal securing 75,000 votes. Kejriwal had got approximately 2,09,000 votes and Modi 5,86,000 votes. The Samajwadi Party which is fighting the polls in Uttar Pradesh in alliance with the BSP, has this time fielded Congress turncoat Shalini Yadav from the seat. Sources said the effort was aimed at keeping Yadav votes intact. Sources in the Congress Party indicated that it had hoped that the SP would withdraw its candidate if Priyanka was fielded and she would contest as a joint Opposition candidate, but there was no such assurance from the other side. Another reason was that the party realised Priyanka would be bogged down campaigning in Varanasi and would not be able to tour other constituencies in Uttar Pradesh where tough contests are in the offing like Amethi from where Congress President Rahul Gandhi is fighting BJPrsquo;s Smriti Irani. ldquo;Anyways, the aim to fight for 2022 Assembly polls in the state, rdquo; a senior leader said. However, what might have clinched the decision could have been a veto by the Congress President who sources said is against any kind of personality based showdowns. While most local residents here concede and the PM does have an edge, many also feel that Gandhirsquo;s candidature would have at least ensured a contest. ldquo; It is true that Modi is a strong candidate and Varanasi has benefitted by virtue of being the PMrsquo;s constituency. But in democracy there should always be a contest and Priyanka Gandhi would have ensured that, rdquo; said Abdullah Ansari, who heads a weaving unit here. Another resident of the city, Ashish Agrawal whose shop near Vishwanath Temple is facing demolition agrees. ldquo; Not all are in favour of Modi. But lack of a credible oppositionnbsp; candidate will push most to vote for him. Maqsood Ali, who works as a hotel staff, said Modi would have faced a tough contest if Priyanka Gandhi contested. However, an equal number differ with this view. Anup Pathak, who runs a Sari shop on Godhuliya Chowka says Varanasi has seen tremendous development under Modi. ldquo; There never was any contest, rdquo; he says when asked about rumours of Priyanka Gandhi contesting from the temple city. On similar lines, chief priest of Sankat Mochan Temple and professor at IIT BHU Vishambar Nath Mishra says the decision not to field Priyanka was wise as it was a one-sided game.

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan has started following some senior Congress leaders on Twitter of late, triggering speculation over his sudden interest in the party that he was once close to and had drifted away from. After following Congress president Rahul Gandhi and the party’s official Twitter handle, he began following senior leaders P Chidambaram, Kapil Sibal, Ahmed Patel, Ashok Gehlot, Ajay Maken, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sachin Pilot and CP Joshi from this month.  He recently also started following party leaders Manish Tewari, Shakeel Ahmed, Sanjay Nirupam, Randeep Surjewala Priyanka Chaturvedi and Sanjay Jha on the micro-blogging site. Bachchan, who was once close to the Nehru-Gandhi family and a friend of Rajiv Gandhi, is currently the brand ambassador of Gujarat. He has over 33.1 million followers on Twitter and follows only 1,689 people.  His sudden love for the Congress and some other opposition leaders has taken the party by surprise.  Some other opposition leaders whom the actor has stated following recently, include Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Yadav, his daughter Misa Bharti, Janata Dal-United’s Nitish Kumar, Communist Party of India-Marxist’s Sitaram Yechury. He also followed the RJD’s official Twitter handle, National Conference’s Omar Abdullah and Nationalist Congress Party’s Supriya Sule.  The AAP leaders he started following recently are Manish Sisodia, Gopal Rai, Sanjay Singh, Kumar Vishwas and Ashish Khetan.Manish Tewari, who was one of the Congress leaders recently followed by the actor, thanked him but did not say anything more on its timing and political significance. “Thank you Sh Amitabh Bachan for following me and it is my privilege to follow the icon of Indian cinema who we grew up watching first-day first-show every new release. Those days in late 70s & early 80s a balcony ticket in Chandigarh was Rs 3. Unbelievable today! @SrBachchan,” he tweeted. The superstar also follows a number of Bharatiya Janata Party leaders. Of late, he started following ministers Nitin Gadkari and Suresh Prabhu. The Rediff.com ; 22nd. Feb,18
