British cruise ship operator, P&O Cruises, has launched the latest addition to its fleet, Iona, with interiors designed by hospitality experts, Jestico + Whiles.

Britain’s largest and most environmentally friendly ship, powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) will accommodate up to 5,200 guests.

Iona was named in a spectacular ceremony broadcast to a virtual audience on Sunday May 16 and the ship’s maiden voyage will be on August 7, sailing the UK coast and up to her namesake island.

The award-winning interior design and architecture studio has designed most of the food and beverage spaces throughout the ship and the most spectacular space of all, the soaring triple-height Grand Atrium which captures unprecedented panoramic views across the ever-changing seascape, as far as the horizon.

The Grand Atrium is the heart of Iona, a lively focal point that encapsulates the spirit of the ship, with spectacular views and natural light. This special space is designed to ‘draw the outside in’ and, accordingly, Jestico + Whiles has made the sea the hero of the space, allowing guests to connect with the seascape around them.The Grand Atrium will be, according to the occasion and time of day, either playground or sanctuary.

It a key entertainment space, designed meticulously to effortlessly accommodate a wide variety of experiences, from musical performance to thrilling aerialists.

At other times it will attract guests throughout the day for convivial repose, offering from morning coffee as the sun rises and sundowners at dusk.

An elegant, gravity defying, arcing staircase of Italian marble with a filigree, bright silver serpentine balustrade serves as the centre piece to the space, evoking the glamour of the iconic cruise ships of the early 20th century. Designed as a sculpture, its swooping form leads guests on a journey through the decks offering ever changing views.

The unifying experience of the atrium is always the view to the sea that provides an enchanting, captivating backdrop to the activity within.

Jestico + Whiles’ Associate Director, Jennifer de Vere-Hopkins said: “Despite the challenge of such a large space, we have worked closely with P&O Cruises to create a unique Grand Atrium that is harmonious with the separate venues, making the space both open and intimate. The refocusing of the guest experiences on the sea is the heart of an entirely new brief. The sea becomes the focus of the triple-height space; the sinuous curves are shaped around it, framing and complementing the views to the outside.”

P&O Cruises senior vice president, Paul Ludlow said: “We’ve set out to make sure the sea is the star on Iona, and the design of the Grand Atrium tells you so much about how special she is going to be. Balancing intimate spaces with larger social areas, guests will be wowed by the three storey high glass walls and the ever-changing view they reveal. From the moment they step onto the staircase, I know guests will be swept away by the beautiful design.”

Jestico + Whiles has designed P&O Cruises first ever ‘gastro pub’ – The Keel and Cow – on Deck 8, with views over the Grand Atrium and the ocean. The Glass House on Deck 7 will include an impressive wine list and menu curated by award-winning wine expert Olly Smith, wines from around the world are served by the glass. Wine connoisseurs will be well taken care of with a new experience, Cellar Door at the Glass House will offer wine talks, tastings and wine-pairing dinners. Guests can relax with unbeatable views as they watch impromptu aerial and circus performances in the three-storey high space.

On Deck 6 at the Vistas Cafe Bar there is a unique offer from P&O Cruises Food Hero and master pâtissier Eric Lanlard. The nearby Emerald Bar will evoke the glamour of a 1920s cocktail bar.

Iona was constructed at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. She holds 5,200 passengers and is the largest cruise ship for the British market.

Corfu island – epitomizes the Magic of the Greek Isles

The reason Corfu is one of the most beautiful islands in Greece is that it one of the greenest, with dense vegetation. The island is located in the Ionian island group, west of the Greek mainland.

Despite the island attracting a lot of visitors, it has retained its wild beauty, making it perfect for hikes along narrow mountain paths and trails. On these walks, you’ll experience the wondrous nature of the island as well as tiny villages, monasteries, monuments and splendid views of the Ionian Sea. The trails are marked by yellow signs and the walks are most times suitable for kids as well.

Corfu Island: Just so Much Variety

Much of Corfu is mountainous. In fact, it was during the Middle Ages that the island had the name Corypho which actually means ‘Place with peaks’. It is thought to have been named after the two peaks of the island’s highest mountain Pantokrator. Most places on the island are visible from the mountain peak.

The beauty of the island isn’t confined to just one part of the island either, and magnificent resorts are spread around the island. If you had to choose, you might opt for the north of the island as it is more hilly and there are lots of beautiful little bays.

You’ll be amazed at the crystal clear water and coves. The island has some 217 kilometers of coast, but if you’re not a beach lover, the interior has plenty to offer as well.

A Mix of Sightseeing, Nightlife and Shopping

If you want a taste of what Corfu is all about, there are many half- and full-day tours for those who want a taste of the place. Corfu is always a popular destination and you can also hire a minibus with driver and enjoy a magical day of sightseeing. A trip like this could include Aqualand, Achilleion Palace, the view of Mouse Island or the must-see monastery at Paleokastritsa, set on a hill about the beach.

A trip to the old town to explore the fortress and do some shopping has to be on your to-do list as well. Speaking of shopping, for those who want to make waves in Corfu and don’t mind bending their bank balances, there is a never-ending list of must-see and must-do activities.

Best Time to Visit Corfu

The beauty of visiting the Greek isles is that they are pretty much all-year-around holiday destinations. However, it also depends on what experience you’re looking for.

The climate on Corfu is generally mild with hot and dry Summers and mild winters. The winter may appeal to those who want to avoid the crowds as this is when the island is extremely quiet. Many of the restaurants and hotels actually close.

January is the coldest month on the island and July and August are the hottest months with temperatures being capable of soaring to 35°C(95°F), with some days becoming even hotter. With such high temperatures, you’ll want to be on the beach, but you’ll be sharing the sand with plenty of other beach visitors as July and August are the island’s peak tourist times.

Everything is expensive in Corfu over this peak holiday time. If you visit out of these peak times you can cut down a great deal on your flight and accommodation costs.

How to get to Corfu

It is one of the easiest islands to visit from the UK, with direct flights from many of the airports and all flying to Corfu International Airport. Incidentally, the Kanoni area offers excellent views of the airport and it can be quite entertaining watching the planes taking off and landing.

There are flights every day and all year from Athens to the airport at Corfu. During the island’s high season, there are also charter flights available from all over Europe.

Book you taxi in advance

Private airport pickup can be pre-arranged and this will save you all the hassle. You can Book Your Corfu Airport Taxi – to get you directly from the airport straight to your hotel and they usually have the same price of a taxi or a little bit more. The best thing is that even if your flight is delayed, you’ll have no problem as the driver will be monitoring the flight anyway. You will be met by the driver holding a name sign as soon as you come out at the arrivals with a bottle of water and city map.

To get you into the holiday mood, you can catch one of the open ferries or hydrofoils from various ports such as from Paxi, Brindisi, Trieste, Patras or Igoumenitsa.

Getting Around the Island

If you’re a fitness fanatic, you may want to rent a bike on the island as it’s a great, affordable way to see Corfu. There are quite a few bicycle rentals but the one which comes to mind is Corfu Cycles.

You can rent one of their bikes or even join one of their cycling tours. When you hire a bike from them you get helmet, lock, repair kit, bottle holder and a safety vest plus roadside assistance which is included in the price. They will also deliver and pick up your bike if needed.

Buses are another way to get around. The main bus terminal in Corfu is San Rocco Square. The green buses are long-distance and the blue buses are short-distance. Local blue buses depart from the local bus station in Corfu Old Town. Ticket prices are according to the journey length. Tickets can be bought on the bus. You’ll notice that bus services are somewhat reduced over the weekend.

There is also a Day Ticket which costs roughly 5,50 € and which is valid for a day, offering unlimited rides for all destinations.

Car- and scooter rentals are also available. To hire these transport-modes, you have to be 21 years of age. Both cars and bikes can be delivered to where you are staying.

Shopping in Corfu:

Shops open for business between 8-9 am to 2:30 pm. They close for siesta time, opening doors again at 5:30 pm until 8:30 – 9:00pm. Most shops are closed on Sunday.

Main town in Corfu:

Corfu Town is the capital of the Greek island of Corfu. The Old Town of Corfu city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is absolutely beautiful and you’ll love the Venetian architecture found alongside the quaint, winding cobblestone streets. Here are some of the highlights which you should definitely put on your list of places to see:

St. Spyridon Church

The Saint Spyridon Church is one of the most important landmarks on Corfu. Dedicated to the patron saint of the island, Saint Spyridon, it was built in the 1580s and houses his relics. The beautiful single-nave basilica with its imposing bell tower is visible from various parts of Corfu Old Town.

The Old Fortress of Corfu

This imposing Venetian fortress is hard to miss. As it dominates the front part of the Corfu Old Town, this massive fortification plays a crucial role in the history of Corfu.

The entrance to the Old Fortress is located just a short walk from Liston Square and to reach the grounds you must cross a small wooden bridge. From here you can enjoy wonderful views of Corfu’s Old Town. There is also a fabulous lighthouse known as the Sea-Town which offers spectacular views.

Spianada

This large square in front of the Corfu Old Town set across from the Old Fortress, is one of the largest squares in Greece. Liston which was build by the French is part of the Spianada square and houses numerous cafes and bars.

Cricket matches used to be played on the Esplanade, the only place in Greece where this sport was played.

Museum of Asian Art

Located right in the heart of Corfu’s Old Town inside the Palace of St. Michael and St. George it is the only museum in Greece which is dedicated to the art of Asia and features a remarkable collection of Chinese, Japanese and India art among others. In the summer there are several concerts taking place at the outdoor premises of the museum.

The New Fortress of Corfu

The New Fortress is a Venetian fortification built on the hill of St. Mark in Corfu in several stages.The original structure was completed in the 16th century by a military engineer Ferrante Vitelli and is located across from the Old Fortress. What is visible today inside the fortress are works which were built by the British during their ruling in Corfu.

Mon Repos Palace

A neoclassical building set at the east side of Paleopolis, which was Corfu’s ancient city. It was built in 1830 by the British Commissioner Sir Frederick Adam right at the beginning of the Kanoni peninsula opposite the ruins of Paleopolis. It is not as glorious as the Achilleion palace yet it overs spectacular sea views extending all the way to the eastern coast of Corfu island.

Nightlife in Corfu:

Corfu is one of the most cosmopolitan of the Greek Islands with a vibrant nightlife. The island is geared towards tourism and it presents its visitors and locals with an excellent line-up of trendy restaurants, bars and nightclubs.

Most of the pubs and bars open early in the morning and remain so past midnight into the early hours of the morning. The nightlife is offered at lots of different venues, from restaurants to disco clubs to lap dance clubs and pool halls.

The most popular night-life destinations are Kavos, Ipsos, Sidari, Dassia, Glyfada and Paleokastritsa. If loud music, dancing and exotic cocktails are your thing, then Corfu won’t disappoint.

The main beach of Paleokastritsa is attractively small and is thought to be one of the finest beaches in the Greek islands.

If you’re particularly looking for child-friendly beaches, the west beaches of Glyfada and Pelekas might be worth a visit.

How feasible do you think an Eraknoplan Freight/Passenger service across smaller oceans like the Aegean/Adriatic/Baltic/Tsushima strait/etc. be? Viable, or is it not worth the investment over current Air/Sea transport infrastructure?

The latter would bethe main count against it - cost-efficiency. Aside from that, it’san entirely viable concept. Last week someone asked me aboutthe BoeingPelican ULTRA, which I immediately identified as a directresurrection of the HughesH-4 Hercules (the “Spruce Goose”) which was alsointended as a high-capacity trans-Atlantic transport to keepvital war supplies safe from the U-Boat menance. Some peoplecontended that the Hercules was too big to truly fly and only liftedoff because of ground effect (which isn’t true,) but even ifit was, it still would’ve achieved its intended missionjust fine. The Boeing Pelican - and any Eraknoplan design - activelyexploit the ground effect so they needn’t bring any more wing thanwhat they strictly need. Combined with the comparatively short routesacross “small” seas like the Aegean/Adriatic/et al., Ifigure they’d work just fine.

In fact, this raises the question of why such a ferryservice doesn’t exist already - it’s a perfectuse-case. Sure, the operating costs would be higher, as an Eraknoplanwouldn’t be nearly as efficient as a conventional ferry ship (intonnage per trip) but would more than make up for itwith speed. Ships are slow - evena fast (and thus expensive) ferry won’t bebreaking 30 knots, and if it does it won’t becarrying very many cars. People’d be willing to pay a premium forthat. Hell, ferries are already expensive comparedto taking roads. In fact the only reason I can think offor not having Eraknoplan ferries already is thatthe routes they typically ply already save massiveshitloads of time compared to going “the long way around”(there’s a ferry from Western Michigan to Wisconsin over “Lake”Michigan, which is basically an inland sea - as bad as Chicago’shighways are they’re not as time-consuming as taking mountain roadsclear up the length of Italy to get around the Adriatic, but it doesa brisk business nonetheless.) So when you’re already reducing a2-day drive to a two-hour transit, reducing that to a thirty-minutetransit doesn’t benefit much, so you may as well get the high cargocost-efficiency of a conventional ship.

That might explain why Eraknoplans are like hovercraftin that they’ve only been exploited for military purposes, whereperformance outweighs cost-efficiency in front-line roles. Still, anEraknoplan seems far more suited to a civilian application - unlike(most) hovercraft, it won’t sink if it gets a hole in the skirt oran engine failure - it’s basically a boat with stubby wings. Andthere’s a proven market for high-speed ferries - Condor Ferriesoperated fast hydrofoil-equippedferry ships for almost thirty years for the Channelcrossing.

From a cost perspective, an ekranoplan should be a lotless costly than a plane. Ships aren’t cheap to maintain, mind you- saltwater is a whore - but much of the maintenancecost for aircraft are derived from how even slight problemscan fucking kill everyone onboard, so obsessivevigilance is mandatory. An ekranoplan can just, well, taxi home onits remaining engines, or even call for a tow.

There’s undoubtedly a combination of business-case,engineering and cost-effectiveness issues that underlie the lack ofground-effect ferries (namely, the package of performance-for-costthat ground-effect vehicles offer don’t fit into any extantbusiness-case,) but exactly why ekranoplans don’tfit into the existing niches…? You’d honestly have to ask someonein the ferry industry why that is. Condor Ferries 29-year run showsthat a high-speed ferry market does exist, but theirfolding also shows it’s likely small; anekranoplan would make those hydrofoils (at 48 knots) look likesnails, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’d makehigh-speed ferry routes viable that hydrofoils cannot. That’d bethe big one, I suspect, but there’s a few more I could think of:

* Dock facilities - unless you can make an ekranoplanthat can tie up (and discharge) at a normal ferry dock like any otherferry, you’ll be footing the bill for building your own supportinfrastructure.

* Handling - anything that leaves the Earth’s surfacehas to watch its weight carefully, especially somethingcarrying big heavy cars - even something exploiting Wing in GroundEffect (WiGE). This’d make mass devoted to things like sidethrusters or thruster pods difficult (to say nothing of integratingit into the hull in an aerodynamic fashion.) It’s far fromimpossible, but as far as I know every ekranoplan built or plannedwas basically built as a flying boat with stubbier wings. Thistranslates to something that won’t handle very well in a harbor,which’d give harbor authorities, pilots, traffic control, etc. aheadache and a half. Anyone who wants to make a ferry service usingbig eraknoplans will need to either contend with this, or invest inR&D to build a vehicle that surmounts it.

* Design - see above. Shipbuilding has a history olderthan written history itself; there has always been ashipyard, somewhere, willing to build whatever zany crazy-assacid-trip design some dipshit with enough cash was willing to payfor. Aircraft are a bit dicier - a prototype ain’t no big, but evena short production run…? And they are productionruns, because, again, a tiny issue with a plane and the whole shebangcomes down in flames, so “a design safe enough to put intoservice on X route” and “a design so thoroughly tested andproofed that we can slap this bitch on an assembly line and crank’emout” tend to go hand in hand. In the 1930s you could order “twelveof this design my nephew whipped up on a napkin, he’s a bright lad”and operate your own airline - and if you’ve got the cash youcan still do that with ships - but the very natureof aircraft made that harder and harder as the technology matured.Especially with regulatory compliance and such.

Now an eraknoplan isn’t a plane - ifit’s a true WiGE that can’t lift off more than 20 feet from thesurface, as we’re discussing here - but that just highlights theproblem. If it’s not a boat, and it’s not a plane… what thefuck is it? Compared to ships and aircraft,there’s far fewer manufacturers or engineers whohave experience with this kind of thing,and nobody’s mass-manufacturing a heavy-lifteraknoplan that you can just buy off the market and modify for yourneeds, so you’re pretty much jumping in blind. And that kind ofinvestment is really hard to justify without a really strongbusiness case to underlie it.
