the following is a writing of one of my characters in a ttrpg i run for a few friends called candela. it's in disco elysium narration style it also has like one mention of suicide vaguely offhandedly. warned just in case. also anything you think is a reference is almost certainly a reference

PERCEPTION (Hearing) - Someone stopped. Who stopped?

PERCEPTION (Extrasensory) - You still feel like you're being watched. You can still feel eyes boring holes into the back of your head. It's not Sydney.

PERCEPTION (Hearing) - Light footsteps tread along the sand. It's not Zed.

YOU - Then…?

HEAT WAVES [Challenging: Success] - Left and right, swaying in the wind. Corpses. More clowns for the river. One you recognize, one stares back at you with a piercing gaze and utters that name.

HALF LIGHT - I miss her.

COMPOSURE - You better fucking not.

LOGIC - Of course. Johnny stopped to gawk at the dead. Like there's anything worth seeing.

ENCYCLOPEDIA [Medium: Success] Your friend--no, more West's friend than yours--she was a Hero. That's what Johnny is, right? She couldn't take her eyes off the bodies either. No matter how badly she wanted to pretend they weren't there.

COMPOSURE - Don't think about that.

PERCEPTION (Hearing) - Hey, guys, Sydney stopped too. Zed as well. Johnny said something about bugging out, but I couldn't hear it because you all were arguing.

SYDNEY CROSS - Sydney only stops for a moment before she runs to catch up with you. "Just like that…"

THEATRE OF COOLTY - Say something cool here.

COMPOSURE - Say something serious here.

YOU - "It's what they deserve."

COMPOSURE - Sufficient.

SYDNEY CROSS - You can hear her scoff from behind you. "Well, I'm not very used to public execution like this." Even as she speaks stoicly, her voice wavers.

ENCYCLOPEDIA [Challenging: Success] - She hasn't trained her version of Composure enough.

COMPOSURE - Not yet.

SYDNEY CROSS - She pauses, and then speaks again. "I mean, you aren't either, are you?" You can sense her make a nervous smile. "I mean, I guess it's been a while, but like. You're a." She pauses. "Player. Y'know?" A slight laugh escapes her, dripping with unseen anxiety. You don't know if even she's aware of it.

THEATRE OF COOLTY - Say something cool.

COMPOSURE - No. Stay silent. No response.

THEATRE OF COOLTY [Godly: Success] - I'm going to shoot myself if I don't get to say something cool.

COMPOSURE - You're bluffing.

MARTYR COMPLEX - 🙂

COMPOSURE - Fuck. Fine.

YOU - "Let's keep moving."

SYDNEY CROSS - She scoffs. "Okay," she mumbles, and marches on behind you.

PERCEPTION (Extrasensory) - She's making fun of you. I don't know how, but she's making fun of you.

COMPOSURE - Whatever. Keep things packed up, nice and neatly.

ZED MORRIS - "I…" A meek voice calls out from the back of the line, small and wavering. "Okay." They sigh. "Justice, you can't just… Say that stuff." A sharp intake of breath. "This is…" Xi pauses.

ZED MORRIS - "Terrible," they spit out.

VOLITION - RED CHECK : This cannot be retried. YOU - Don't say anything.

VOLITION [Trivial: Failure] - You know I can't save you. Not from yourself.

HALF LIGHT - What a fucking PANSY. Teach them a god damn lesson.

YOU - "They KILLED people. Murdered innocent people. They killed YOU!"

SYDNEY CROSS - You've suddenly stopped. You don't remember doing that. Sydney walks right into your shoulder.

COMPOSURE - You don't feel a thing. Now stop speaking.

YOU - "They've murdered innocents who can't even come back."

RHETORIC - They don't know anything. They don't know fucking anything.

JOHNNY Q. - Johnny ran ahead, or at least he must've, because now he's stopped and his footsteps are ahead of you.

COMPOSURE - Hey! I said stop! Are you fucking listening to me!?

YOU - "She killed so many and people didn't know."

MARTYR COMPLEX [Formidable: Success] - "I couldn't have known."

HALF LIGHT - You should've. What she did…

YOU - "It's what she deserves. It's what they all deserve."

MARTYR COMPLEX - "To be made an example of."

ZED MORRIS - Zed is quiet. Xi looks at you in horror. "You can't just say that."

COMPOSURE - Please… I'm in control! I'm in control!!! Stop!!!

HALF LIGHT - This little shit doesn't know when to quit.

RHETORIC - They need a lesson.

RHETORIC [Challenging: Success] - "If someone killed Little Guy and inspired other people to kill and conquer, would you want that person alive for even a second longer?"

ZED MORRIS - They clutch Little Guy close.

YOU - Try to understand. See behind the curtain.

TWIN PEAKS [Trivial: Success] -

REFORMATION [Legendary: Failure] - You're tired. You're just so fucking tired. PREY INSTINCT [Formidable: Failure] - They're threatening you. They're going to take Little Guy away from you, aren't they? To teach you something. Oh god. It's all falling apart.

ZED MORRIS - Their eyes dart around like a caged animal. "That's not. You can't do that. Why should we kill as well?" Xi takes a quick glance at the limp Little Guy in xir arms. "Just!!! DON'T!!!!!!!!! Bring them into this!!! I'm not talking about them!!!" Their voice quavers like a dam about to break. "That's not…nice!!! That's not right."

TWIN PEAKS - Isn't it though?

MARTYR COMPLEX - It's exactly what's right.

RHETORIC - "It's not right to take out the life of someone who caused no harm."

ENCYCLOPEDIA [Godly: Failure] - …

COMPOSURE - I'm… I'm in control…

MARTYR COMPLEX - "You get what you give."

HALF LIGHT - "Sooner or later, you're gonna have to realize that."

COMPOSURE - Please, I…

JOHNNY Q. - Ahead of you, Johnny breaks into a sob. The dam is broken, and the broken are damned.

ZED MORRIS - "JOHNNY!" They cry out. "Johnny, what's going on, what's happening?" They run over to check on her. "Hey, hey… "

JOHNNY Q. - They shake their head. "I'm just… Tired of this…"

COMPOSURE - I'm… In…

THEATRE OF COOLTY - Turn away.

YOU - Turn away.

COMPOSURE [Impossible: Failure] - I'M FFFFUCKING NOTHING!!!!!!!!!

YOU - Ball your hands into fists.

COMPOSURE - A WORTHLESS, SNIVELLING PILE OF… OF NOTHINGGG!!!!!!!!

YOU - Wipe your arm across your face.

COMPOSURE - I'M… I'm… Beam Above, deliver me unto salvation… God, please…Please…

TWIN PEAKS - It'll all be over soon.

MARTYR COMPLEX - It'll all be over soon.

THEATRE OF COOLTY - Move.

PERCEPTION (Hearing) [Formidable: Failure] - Johnny says something you can't hear. You think Zed does too. Sydney mumbles. No audio. No sound. No memory.

YOU - Move forward, boats against the current. Borne ceaselessly back into the past.
