Sixty years ago on a typical wet August Bank Holiday weekend at exactly 1.30pm on Saturday 3rd August 1963, Oxford Circus and the surrounding streets were closed to all road traffic and non-residents, and they were not opened again until 6.30 am on Tuesday August 6th. What was going on you may ask. (August Bank Holiday was at the beginning of August in the day)
Well a massive operation was to be undertaken to place a giant 'umbrella' over what was to become the new Oxford Circus tube station ticket hall. This was part of the Victoria Line construction, and this temporary steel structure was designed to sit on top of Oxford Circus so that road traffic could drive over, while a new ticket hall was dug out and constructed underneath.
With just 65 hours to complete the project, construction staff and engineers had to seal off the road junction, and in a manner that would have modern day building contractors gasp in horror, they erected largely by hand a cage made from 245 pieces of prefabricated steel over the road and then placed the concrete roadway on top.
Having started on the Saturday they had finished the structural work by 12:15pm on the Monday, and after installing road signs, traffic lights and the like, road traffic resumed at 6:30am on the dot on the Tuesday morning.
But this magnificent feat of engineering really didn't get the press coverage it deserved, because another much bigger story developed after that very Bank Holiday weekend, and that was what the press dubbed The Great Train Robbery, but that's another story.
