Rapid urbanization has resulted in creating areas of chaotic and unsafe living conditions for those of low-income levels. The urban poor community began to grow as a result of increasing job opportunities in the city. However, slums were the direct result of the city government’s inability to provide affordable housing for the growing urban poor. A slum household lacks access to water, sanitation, security of household tenure, durability of housing, and sufficient living area. Currently one billion people, or one third of the world's population live in slums, with the majority living in Asia. 

The Anganwadi Project

The architect’s role in upgrading slums has to do with understanding the people who live in the slums. Architects need to understand the living, social, and economic conditions of the people to design for their needs rather than wants. A key factor that benefits the way the design is carried out is through voluntary community participation. Their input in design based on what they need in their community can change the way they live their lives. In the slums of Ahmedabad, Gujarat India, the future of the children is the main importance for the community. The purpose is to provide a joyful and well surrounded space for children living in crammed, poorly sanitized homes. The desired outcome is that the children growing up in slums acquire a good education that allows them to become our future leaders and prevent slums from reoccurring.

The Anganwadi Project was created to focus on building functional spaces that would encourage kids to enjoy school while allowing them to escape from their poor living conditions at home.

Existing Anganwadi, which is a form a small childcare, were located within the slums in small, compact rooms that because they received little to no light it discouraged education for the kids.

The project employs local builders and crafts people alongside volunteer architects who use recycled materials to build the educational spaces for the children. The size of a one room Anganwadi is equivalent to a two-car garage.

The outcome has been beneficial not only for the small children but also to their parents and older siblings who had to take care of them. Now due to the developed Anganwadi, they can go to work or pursue a higher education knowing that there is a childcare system in place.

Our Proposal

1. Build affordable homes

The idea is to build different options of low-income houses that will allow the people to choose the design that fits them best. Option 1 will consist of properties that are completely isolated from their neighbors. Option 2 will be units connecting with the same space in the front space used for entrances but both units will be separated. Option 3 is units that similar to option 2 will be connected but will have the entrances on opposite sides. Lastly, Option 4 becomes isolated properties with the entrances being opposite sides as well.

2. Small units that provide multiple programs

The small units can be designed to fit multiple programs within a small space. The idea is to use an area of around 500 to 700 sq ft. that will allow for all the programs needed in a house to be included. These programs will include 2 bedrooms along with 2 bathrooms and closets, also a compacted space for hallways, and an open space for the kitchen, dining, and living room. By providing all these programs, the residents will be healthier as there will be no need to have a great number of people sharing the same restroom, bedroom, closet, etc. leading environmental pollution to decrease.

3. Urban organization

The organization of said units will have to be designed depending on slopes, green areas, roads, etc., to fit within a site to avoid an uncoordinated neighborhood. By doing this, it will provide for a safer area where residents will want to protect their own homes and their neighbors. Therefore, if there is more safety, fewer crimes will exist.

4. Sustainable designs to reduce maintenance and billing costs

The choice of materiality becomes a great factor when designing sustainable homes. In this particular case, these units are to be built with wood framing for the structural system as the dead and live loads can be perfectly supported due to them being small houses. Followed by the framing, they will account with insulation all around the walls and roof to reduce the percentage of heat and cold to enter the houses, this will reduce the electricity costs. Next, they will have prefabricated panels made with recycled or inexpensive materials for the exterior walls, by using prefabricated panels, the installation process becomes faster and expedited. When it comes to interior walls, these will be painted in white for lighting reflection to avoid using electricity as much as possible. Lastly, the roofing system will be composed of laminated shingles as they stay cooler than other materials and offer a greater light deflection which reduces heat from transferring to the interior of the house.

5. Recreational areas

Lastly, including recreational areas will allow for multiple activities to take place in the neighborhood. Such activities could include any type of events that will involve the community to participate in healthier tasks, unlike crimes. It could be anywhere from sports to cultural events.
