At its core, the Predator is a modern science fiction take on the concept of “the great white hunter.” The term applied to real-life figures like Alan Black and Frederick Selous, along with fictional creations like Allan Quatermain. These figures were often Europeans or Americans who traveled to Africa to hunt exotic game. This was the time when Africa was known as “the dark continent” and its inhabitants frequently portrayed as “primitive.” These hunters quickly built a mythology around themselves.
Similar to Richard Connell’s classic short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” the Predator essentially takes that idea to an absurdly heightened extreme: What if a big game hunter pursued human beings rather than animals? Much like the Americans and the Europeans traveling to Africa with their guns and traps, the Predator arrives on Earth with more advanced technology to stalk and kill its prey. Much like those hunters take ivory from fallen elephants, the Predator takes trophies of its own.
While riffing on these colonial tropes, Predator was a product of its time. It followed a military team led by Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer (Arnold Schwarzenegger), which is co-opted by Dutch’s old friend Al Dillon (Carl Weathers) for a top secret black ops mission in Central America. It was a rather timely premise for a science fiction action film, with its June 1987 release neatly intersecting with the televised Iran-Contra hearings that covered shady American activity in Nicaragua.
Part of the genius of Predator lies in the obvious thematic layers running through the movie. Just like the Predator is an alien presence on Earth, Dutch and his team are well aware of the fact that they have no business on “the wrong side of the border.” Early in the film, Dutch and his team tear through a rebel base with ruthless efficiency, demonstrating their superior training and firepower. The irony is that the Predator will be just as effective in dismembering them.
Like many action movies of the decade, including Return of the Jedi and Top Gun, Predator has been read as a relitigation of Vietnam. It is about an American foreign intervention that goes disastrously wrong. However, like in the Rambo movies, Predator’s protagonists succeed by appropriating the tactics of the Viet Cong, by staging low-tech guerrilla warfare against a technologically superior foe. There is an element of America working through what Nixon called “the Vietnam Syndrome.”
Trachtenberg and Aison understand that Predator is a movie about the horror of colonialism, but they push the metaphor even further in Prey. After all, the heroes of Predator are a black ops team that are themselves engaged in extending the influence of the United States into Central America. The most prominent indigenous character in Predator is Anna Gonsalves (Elpidia Carrillo), the only survivor of the raid on the guerrilla camp, who spends most of the movie as an unarmed hostage.
Naru feels less like Dutch and more like Anna. Like Anna, Naru is the most prominent woman in a predominantly male cast. Like Anna, Naru spends extended portions of the film as a captive hostage, overpowered by both her own tribesman Wasape (Stormee Kipp) and later by a French trapper (Mike Paterson). Like Anna, Naru survives her first encounter with the creature because it doesn’t consider her a threat. However, unlike Anna, Naru asserts agency within the plot of Prey.
Rather than focusing on an external force intruding into another nation, Prey focuses on an indigenous population. The film is set on the American frontier, primarily within the Comanche Nation. Repeatedly throughout the film, the Predator is likened to the European settlers who are encroaching on the North American continent. Naru repeatedly encounters traps set by those hunters, which are not too dissimilar to the technology employed by the Predator itself.
At one point, Naru stumbles across a field of skinned buffalo. It directly evokes the skinned bodies hanging from the tree in the original Predator. For a moment, it seems like the alien creature might have done this, until Naru recovers a discarded cigar. The horror is man-made. It is an image taken directly from American history, tied explicitly to the subjugation of the Native American population. To quote an anonymous army official, “Every buffalo dead is an Indian gone.”
Central to Prey is the importance of standing up against imperialist aggression. Taabe turns a trophy skull on the Predator’s belt into an improvised weapon. Naru is undergoing the kühtaamia, a ritual in which she must hunt a creature strong enough to hunt her. “You think the reason for kühtaamia is to prove you can hunt,” Sumu (Stefany Mathias) warns Naru. “But there’s only one reason: to survive.” Taabe summarizes the importance of the ritual in setting boundaries, “When the lion comes, you tell that thing, ‘This is as far as you go. No more. This is it.’”

Watch this. Then, watch Hulu’s prequel Prey, which adds more layers to the premise.

The Fraught and Remarkable Production of James Cameron’s ALIENS
In 1979, director Ridley Scott took the genres of horror and science fiction by storm with his groundbreaking film Alien. As is often the case with runaway successes such as this, a sequel followed. However, unlike Alien – Aliens was to be an altogether different kind of beast.
youtube
    Aliens Conception
After the success of Alien, producer David Giler declared in 1979 that production house Brandywine were intent on making a sequel. Initially having the full support of  20th Century Fox’s president Alan Ladd Jr, that year Ladd left amid Fox’s transition to new owners. The new management at Fox had no interest in the sequel. In the meantime, Giler and partners Walter Hill and Gordon Carroll sued Fox regarding the disbursement of the Alien profits after reneging on Ladd’s promise. The subsequent lawsuit would not be settled until 1983. By this time, Fox had once again acquired new executives that were more interested in continuing Alien as a franchise. Giler pitched the project to the new management as a cross between Hill’s Southern Comfort and The Magnificent Seven.
  Enter James Cameron
While the producers sought a writer for the proposed sequel, Development executive Larry Wilson came across James Cameron’s screenplay for The Terminator. The screenplay was passed on to Giler, the general feeling was that Cameron was the man for the job. Giler approached Cameron, who was completing pre-production of The Terminator at this time. A fan of Alien, Cameron was interested in helming the proposed sequel and began work on a concept for Aliens. Cameron produced a 45-page treatment in just 4 days. Fox management once again put the film on hiatus. The pitch was met with mixed feelings and cold feet that Alien had not generated enough profit to warrant a sequel.
Filming of Cameron’s The Terminator was also delayed by nine months at this time. Due to its star, Arnold Schwarzenegger filming Conan the Destroyer, production was delayed. This was a serendipitous turn of events allowing Cameron additional time to write a script for Aliens. While still filming The Terminator, Cameron wrote 90 pages for Aliens. Even in its unfinished state, the work piqued the interest of Fox’s new president Larry Gordon. Cameron was told that if The Terminator was a success, he would be able to direct Aliens. Bringing aboard Gale Ann Hurd to produce, The rest, as they say, is history.
Express Elevator To Hell: A Change Of Approach
Where as the original Alien is oft quoted as being a “haunted house in space”, Cameron’s approach for the sequel was to be something entirely different. The extra time Cameron had been afforded to work on his treatment for Aliens had been well utilised. The story he came up with took the series in a brave new direction.
Ellen Ripley has been drifting in space for some time after the events of the first movie. To be more precise, Ripley has drifted through space for 57 years. Picked up in her EEV by Wayland-Yutani, the ever-present, shadowy “Company”, Ripley’s tasked with returning to LV-426, now a terraformed colony. All communication with LV-426 and its inhabitants has been lost. Accompanying a squad of kick-ass colonial marines, they need to establish why contact has broken down.
Aliens is Bigger, bolder, and much more action oriented than its predecessor. Where as the original was more a traditional thriller, Aliens was to be all out war. Perfectly pacing exposition, slow building suspense and intense action, Cameron certainly knew what he wanted to deliver. From its bombastic James Horner score, to its groundbreaking Stan Winston effects, This is how a sequel is done right.
  Hard Times
Cameron now had his film and a $18 million budget, he now needed to secure his leading lady. Sigourney Weaver was reticent about the project. Weaver met Cameron who explained his ideas, piquing the actors interest in revisiting her character. Fox, however, refused to sign Weaver over a payment dispute and asked Cameron to write a story excluding her character. Cameron refused on the grounds that Fox had indicated that Weaver’s involvement when he began writing his treatment for Aliens. Cameron doggedly insisted in Weaver’s involvement and Fox signed the contract. Weaver obtained a salary of $1 million, a sum 30 times what she was paid for Alien.
Bringing together the likes of Michael Biehn, Lance Henriksen and Bill Paxton, who had all worked with Cameron on The Terminator. They were joined by Paul Reiser, Janette Goldstein, William Hope and newcomer, Carrie Henn to round off the principal cast.
    Us & Them
Filmed over the best part of a year at Pinewood studios in the U.K., the production was notoriously fraught. The U.S & U.K crews would frequently butt heads. Notoriously tensions strained over, of all things, was the Great British ‘tea break’ frequently bringing production to a halt. A very much ‘us & them’ attitude punctuated the production. Many of the experienced crew had worked under Ridley Scott on the original film and believed Cameron to be too young and inexperienced to carry so large a film. Tensions reached their peak when Cameron fired D.O.P Dick Bush over negative approaches to schedule and difference of opinion, causing the crew to walk out on the production. Hurd, working her production magic, managed to coax the crew back. With such a pervasive atmosphere, it is a wonder the film turned out as well as it did.
Praise has to be given on the magnificent sets that were built. Production converted part of a disused power station in Acton to become the alien nest. An interesting piece of trivia, the set that was used for the atmosphere processor was reused a few years later as The Axis chemical factory in Tim Burton’s Batman. I was never aware of this until recently and must confess to geeking out a little.
    Building A Better Movie
Robert and Dennis Skotak were hired to supervise the visual effects for Aliens. Two stages were utilised to construct the colony on LV-426.  Cameron used these miniatures and several effects to make scenes look larger than they really were. Namely through methods including forced perspective, rear projection, mirrors and foreground miniatures. Practical effects supervisor John Richardson (who earned the Oscar for Best Visual Effects for the film in 1987) declared his biggest challenge was creating the power loader. Requiring three months work, The model could not stand on its own, requiring either wires dangling from the shoulders or a pole through the back attached to a crane. While Sigourney Weaver was stood inside the loader, a stunt man standing behind it would move the arms and legs.
  Aliens Reborn
Stan Winston designed alien suits were made more flexible and durable than the ones used in Alien to allow more freedom of movement. This new suit allowed the Xeno’s to crawl and jump. Dancers, gymnasts, and stunt men were hired to portray the aliens. 8-foot-tall mannequins we’re constructed to make aliens that stood could have charges detonated to simulate gunshot wounds. Winston’s team also created fully articulated facehuggers that could move their fingers; these were moved by wires hidden on the scenery or the actors’ clothing. This was a remarkably simple trick that allowed the facehuggers to appear more real than ever.
    The Queen Lives!
The alien queen provided one of the most difficult challenges to film. A life-sized mockup was created by Winston in the U.S. to act as a dry run  to see how it would operate on set. Once the testing was complete, the crew working on the queen flew to England and began work creating the final version.
Standing at 14 feet tall, it was a phenomenal physical creation. The Queen was operated using a mixture of puppeteers, control rods, hydraulics, cables, and a crane above to support it. Two puppeteers inside the suit operated its arms, and 16 additional were required to move it. All sequences involving the full-size queen were filmed in-camera with no post-production manipulation. Let’s just consider that for a moment. The majority of the queens shots, excluding some minimal miniature work, all happened on set. Even by today’s standards, that is remarkable.
Now That Sounds Like A Franchise: The Success Of Aliens
Aliens was released in North America on July 18, 1986. In North America, the film opened in 1,437 theaters with an opening weekend gross of $10,052,042. It was #1 at the North American box office for four consecutive weeks, grossing $85.1 million. The film’s worldwide total gross has been stated as high as $180 million, making Aliens one of the highest-grossing R-rated films at the time. Due to its resounding success, the Xenomorphs would return to our screens again in 1992 for Alien3, helmed by first time director David Fincher. In the subsequent years that followed their would be another 3 Alien movies and a further 2 Alien vs. Predator spin-offs.
The Alien series has proved to be a franchise that refuses to lay down and die. Arguably its real turning point came with the leap of faith taken by James Cameron in taking the series in a bold new direction and expanding upon the mythos of the Xenomorph race in such an inventive and breathlessly engaging way.

When Marvel’s The Black Panther appeared in an issue of The Fantastic Four in 1966, he was the first black superhero in mainstream American comics! What you may not know, is back in 1992, Wesley Snipes expressed his desire to make a movie—but it never came to fruition. In fact, there were talks of a Black Panther film and various levels of commitment or early development in 1992, 1997, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2013, with a whole slew of directors and actors interested at different times. Whew.

A Wrinkle in Time Director: Ava DuVernay Studios: Walt Disney Pictures and Whitaker Entertainment
Now aren’t you proud of yourself for finishing that reading assignment back in 6th grade? A Wrinkle in Time was a tough one for author Madeleine L’Engle to get published after she finished writing it in 1960, and part of her theory about that was that it “had a female protagonist in a science fiction book.” Luckily, we’re getting better at that, and the movie looks incredible! So excited to see the fearless Meg as well as Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which in action.
youtube
Alpha Director: Albert Hughes Studio: Studio 8

August
youtube
The Predator Director: Shane Black Studios: 20th Century Fox, et al.
There’s not a whole lot of information out there, yet, about The Predator but we’re still pretty excited for it! We do know that it takes place between Predator 2 (1990) and Predators (2010) and that the director will be Shane Black who played Hawkins in the original 1987 movie. He also directed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3, and The Nice Guys.
Statham vs. Shark
The Meg Director: Jon Turteltaub Studios: Apelles Entertainment, et al.
In the words of Jason Statham himself, “Who doesn’t want to watch a film about the biggest shark that’s ever existed?” Enough said.
September
youtube
Smallfoot Director: Karey Kirkpatrick and Jason Reisig Studios: Warner Animation Group, et al.
We love the concept of yetis who aren’t sure that humans exist!
October
Venom Director: Ruben Fleischer Studios: Colombia Pictures, et al.
While Venom will be yet another origin story, this will be an R-rated villain’s origin story, so we can expect some shake-ups. Oh, and Spider-man won’t be there. This is pure Venom. Here’s a quick rundown of what we know about the movie, which is currently filming.
Note: While the image is from the Venom of Spider-Man 3 here are some fun theories about what the new Venom might look like!
Mowgli Director: Andy Serkis Studios: Imaginarium Productions and Warner Bros.
While you were being blown away by The Jungle Book in 2016, did you know that another adaptation of the classic tale was also in the works? This one will mark Andy Serkis’s directorial debut and will star Rohan Chand with voices from Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale, and Benedict Cumberbatch. It will be fun to see another perspective!
November
youtube
Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 Director: Phil Johnston and Rich Moore Studios: Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures
It’s been six whole years since the first Wreck-It Ralph, and we’re ready for more! This time, Ralph and Vanellope have to travel “to the Internet” to save the game after the Sugar Rush arcade cabinet is broken.
youtube
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Director: David Yates Studios: Heyday Films and Warner Bros.
In 2016 we fell in love with all the fantastic beasts in Newt Scamander’s funny little suitcase (especially the Niffler!) We’re super intrigued by a Jude Law Albus Dumbledore and just all-around ready to see what happens next—and what new beasts we’ll get to meet!
Dr. Suess’ The Grinch Directors: Peter Candeland, Yarrow Cheney, and Matthew O’Callaghan Studios: Illumination Entertainment
While it can be difficult (and dangerous) to recreate such a classic, we’re looking forward to seeing the minds behind The Secret Life of Pets and Despicable Me retelling this holiday favorite. Bonus: Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of the Grinch!
X-Men: Dark Phoenix Director: Studios: 20th Century Fox, et al.
We’re finally getting a Dark Phoenix story! Good thing we already got used to Sansa Stark as Jean Grey in the last one.
youtube
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms Director: Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston Studios: The Mark Gordon Company and Walt Disney Pictures
This movie looks straight-up gorgeous—and a little dark. We love the idea of a Nutcracker story that explores more of the darker side of the classic tale. And did we mention it looks gorgeous?
December
youtube
Mary Poppins Returns Director: Rob Marshall Studios: Lucamar Productions, et al.
Hearing that Mary Poppins Returns is a sequel instead of a remake is kind of refreshing! Not that we have anything against remakes, we’re just excited to see a fresh new story—especially one featuring Emily Blunt and Lin Manuel Miranda!
Bumblebee Director: Travis Knight Studios: Allspark Pictures, et al.
This will be the first Transformers movie not directed by Michael Bay, which could make for some interesting new perspectives! This time, Kubo and the Two Strings director Travis Knight will give us a Bumblebee spin-off, as well as his live-action directorial debut.
Side Note: Be sure to check out our behind-the-scenes look at Kubo and the Two Strings!
Aquaman Director: James Wan Studios: DC Comics, DC Entertainment, and Warner Bros.
With director James Wan at the helm, this is sure to be a departure from the traditional superhero movie, and we’re pumped to see Khal Drogo back in action. Wan’s directorial credits include Saw, The Conjuring, and Furious 7—we’re excited to see what he does with such a unique DC hero.
youtube
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Director: Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman Studios: Colombia Pictures, et al.
While we’ve had some great live-action Spider-man stories, it seems like the character is made for an animated movie like this. The animation is almost stylized 3D with a 2D aesthetic and makes Spidey’s movements look even more…well…spiderlike. Why is December so far away?!
Seems like 2018 is going to be an incredible year in animation. Did we miss any movies that you’re looking forward to? Let us know!

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Director: J.A. Bayona Studios: Amblin Entertainment, et al.

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation Director: Genndy Tartakovsky Studios: Colombia Pictures, et al.
This time, the crew goes on their own vacation on a luxury Monster Cruise Ship. Sounds like some fun shenanigans.
youtube
Ant-man and the Wasp Director: Peyton Reed Studio: Marvel Studios
Clearly Hope van Dyne had some fighting chops that her father wouldn’t fully let her exercise in the first Ant-Man, so we’re looking forward to seeing her kick even more ass in Ant-Man and the Wasp.
August
November

Movies Coming Out in 2018: What to Watch in Animation
2018 is here! For you that might mean resolutions and fresh starts, but most importantly it means getting super excited for all the awesome movies coming out this year. Luckily, we’ve got the next 12 months all planned out for you. Here’s what we’re looking forward to in animation in 2018!
January
youtube
Paddington 2 Director: Paul King Studios: StudioCanal, et al.
We were so excited to see such a beloved classic successfully brought to the big screen in 2014, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for Paddington and the Browns next!
February
youtube
Peter Rabbit Director: Will Gluck Studios: 2.0 Entertainment, et al.
With voice work by Daisy Ridley and Domhnall Gleeson as Mr. McGregor we’ll try not to have flashbacks of Rey and General Hux in The Last Jedi while we’re watching Peter Rabbit.
youtube
Black Panther Director: Ryan Coogler Studios: Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Pictures
Whew.
Finally by 2015, the film started to take shape and now we can’t wait to see it this February! Wikipedia actually has a great breakdown of the film’s journey here.
youtube
Early Man Director: Nick Park Studios: Aardman Animations and StudioCanal

youtube
Sherlock Gnomes Director: John Stevenson Studios: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Paramount Animation, et al.
From the director of Kung Fu Panda and original music by the incredible Elton John and Bernie Taupin—the gnomes are back!
youtube
Alpha explores the very beginnings of “man’s best friend,” as a young caveman befriends a wolf during the last ice age in Europe. Hello, creature animation!
April
youtube
Rampage Director: Brad Peyton Studios: New Line Cinema and Wrigley Pictures
The Rock…I mean Dwayne Johnson…has become pretty synonymous with fun and outrageous action movies. In Rampage he actually faces off against something taller than him. We can’t miss that.
youtube
The New Mutants Director: Josh Boone Studios: Marvel Entertainment and 20th Century Fox

Note: This is a fan’s sneak peek, not an official trailer!
Solo: A Star Wars Story Director: Ron Howard Studios: Lucasfilm, et al.
Do we even need to say it? Of COURSE we’re pumped to see where it all began for Han, Chewy, and Lando. And they just announced that John Williams will write the theme song!
youtube
Avengers: Infinity War Director: Anthony Russo and Joe Russo Studio: Marvel Studios
After the hilarity that was Thor: Ragnorak we’re really looking forward to the next Avengers movie! Bonus: Guardians of the Galaxy crossover!

Alpha explores the very beginnings of “man’s best friend,” as a young caveman befriends a wolf during the last ice age in Europe. Hello, creature animation!

August
November
youtube
Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 Director: Phil Johnston and Rich Moore Studios: Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures

Black Panther Director: Ryan Coogler Studios: Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Pictures
Whew.
Finally by 2015, the film started to take shape and now we can’t wait to see it this February! Wikipedia actually has a great breakdown of the film’s journey here.

The Predator (2018)
The Predator is a 2018 American science-fiction action horror film directed by Shane Black (Iron Man 3) and co-written by Fred Dekker (The Monster Squad; Night of the Creeps). Shane Black was an uncredited script doctor on the 1987 Predator movie.
