Clean, punctual, almost too polite for a seven-year-old, and more interested in reading on her own than in four-square or My Little Pony- if the little girl hadn't been so effusive in praising her "Mama," Edith would have expected an overbearing harridan of the sort who banned all toys and invented homework when none was assigned.
A mother like that would have been easier to categorize than Lucille Sharpe.
"Theresa punched one of her classmates in the face," Edith repeated. "Twice."
Lucille raised an eyebrow- perfectly arched, perfectly dark against her pale skin, as precise as everything about her. From her midnight-blue skirt suit with its oddly fantastical embroidery of trailing black vines, to the mirror shine on her dark stilettos, she could have stepped out of a particularly artistic fashion magazine.
"And what had they done?" God, this woman's accent was made to personally victimize lesbians who watched too much Masterpiece Theatre.
(Down, girl, she scolded herself. Parents are off-limits. Even if they do have legs for days and cheekbones that could cut glass and- no! Stop that!)
Edith sighed. "I did explain this in the email, Ms. Sharpe."
"Refresh my memory." Lucille smiled. Edith was reminded forcibly of a documentary on crocodiles she'd watched the week before.
"They took another student's doll and were trying to keep it away from her. No-one had gone for the recess monitor yet."
"So," Lucille said, crossing her legs, "they tormented another child and were punished for it? Is that what you're saying? Forgive me, but I fail to see what my daughter did wrong."
God save me from entitled mothers. "Violence is not an appropriate way for kids to resolve conflicts," Edith explained after mentally counting to ten. "I'm sure we agree on that."
"You must be quite the mind-reader, Miss Cushing," Lucille replied, "to be sure of my opinions before I voice them." Her blue-green eyes didn't waver from Edith's, laser-focusing on the other woman's face as if examining a specimen under a microscope.
She also didn't seem to be blinking, Edith realized. Just in case this situation needed another layer of discomfort.
"I..." Oh, very mature. Sit there staring like an idiot while the parent just basically admitted that she's fine with her child beating up other students. In spite of herself, a flicker of anger darted across Edith's mind. Who did this woman think she was? And before she could think, she found herself snapping, "I hope I do, because if I'm wrong, you frankly have far bigger issues than your daughter ever could."
The urge to clap her hand over her mouth- or better yet, to run from the room -was overwhelming. That was it. The end of her reputation. Talking back to a parent when she was supposed to be the calm one, the rational one, above emotional outbursts...she'd never live this down, not as the most junior teacher at Radcliffe Elementary. So this was what it felt like to become a cautionary tale in real-time.
Edith's nails dug into her palms. Her mind raced through options- shouting, threats, storming out to escalate things to the principal. There were only a few ways this could go. She'd seen them all happen before, to other teachers, and sworn that would never be her. But now...
Lucille- smiled. A real smile this time, clearly, but one as thin and sharp as a blade. It wasn't encouraging. Her eyes flickered slightly lower than Edith's, then back up to meet her gaze again.
"Well, then. She has a bark and a bite." A wave of some slightly dusty perfume- lilies? -washed over Edith as Lucille leaned forward across the cheap laminate desk between them. The classroom, always a little chilly, suddenly seemed to grow a bit too warm for comfort.
"Miss Cushing," she said quietly, "perhaps we could discuss what issues I do or don't have over a drink sometime?"
