To get some positivity in this tag: Let me tell you about my recent bustrip to Prague! While narcoleptic. It was really great, and a bit tricky, and I think we can use some stories of disabled people doing fun things.
Background story: I was visiting my grandmother, and took the bus both there and back, because it's different, and because I really wanted to actually see some more of the Europe I spent my life running there and back through (we live in the West, my Grandmother in the East). On the way back, I spent two nights in Prague. It was a highly anticipated part of the trip, as I still kind of miss the city after my one year there. It was also the most tricky part of the whole thing to manage.
You see, my bus arrived at 6.00h, and check-in at the hotel was at 15.00h. Which is a good nine hours between the two.
I am pretty much guaranteed to fall asleep every three to four hours.
Rest of the story under the cut.
For those not aware of the weather right now in Eastern Europe: It's COLD. And SNOWY! So when I arrived at the bus station, my first reaction was pretty much "Nope!", and I went into the bathroom to put on an extra layer of clothes. I was fine after that.
You can walk from UÁN Florenc bus station to the Old Town pretty easily, which I knew because as I said, I've been there before. So I walked there, and stopped to buy myself some breakfast in a big supermarket at a metro station. After that, I went the usual way down to Old Town Square and the clock, and continued on to Charles Bridge.
At that point, it was still only between 7.00h and 8.00h, so of course there was close to nobody on the streets, only the people who had to be there. And snow. Lots of snow. Charles Bridge. People. Charles Bridge, normally black with age and full of tourists, was WHITE! And almost completely empty. I was there at sunrise. It was impossible to describe beautiful.
Pictures don't do it justice, but here are some. The river. People. The river was damping!
And yeah, this is Old Town Square.
I usually don't get this magic-place-feeling from Prague, because the people cover it up. Which is actually one of the reasons I like it, they cover up some of the useless noise in my brain, too. I'm more functional in a big city.
Anyway. This was clearly an exception. It really felt like walking in a wintery fairy tale. The only thing missing was a ghost.
After that, I went to the hotel, and dropped off my backpack. I like to travel with a light luggage, which made moving around earlier possible. And hotels are fine keeping luggages locked up in some room before check-in and after check-out.
I then took the tram number 22 direction Nádraží Hostivař. This was planned. One, I know the line, and know that it passes by two big shopping centres. Two, I know that I always fall asleep on any moving vehicle, and public transportation is a reasonably safe place to sleep.
Which is exactly what happened, I woke only when I was at the second shopping centre. So I went and looked at some shops, and bought myself a gift of three ice bear figurines. I sometimes like to take pictures of these plastic figurines, and the snow triggered that. I'm very sorry that I didn't have my actual collection with me. But the bears did a wonderful job, too.
This was behind a random tank station, where there was a table with benches where the snow was still completely untouched. So I played a little around there.
Then I took the tram to the other shopping centre, fell asleep again on the way there, looked a bit more at shops, had lunch in the KFC on the top floor and finished my book, then it was already time to take the tram back to the hotel. I fell asleep during that trip again, then I went to the hotel, checked in and got my room. All in all, I had managed to survive those 9+ hours without any greater discomfort, which is, honestly, better than I'd expected.
The end. Here are some more bears from the next day.
City wildlife. <3
#I hope I'm not getting too off-topic here#but sometimes I do wish that the narcolepsy tag on here wasn't just pain and suffering#not that pain and suffering aren't part of the experience!#but so is joy#Managing the time between my arrival and the check-in was the most difficult part of this trip#and I did it! I did it well!#this was a success experience#one that nondisabled people might not understand#I mean what I did wasn't exacty the typical tourist activity#but it was the right one FOR ME#also helps that I already knew the place I was going to#personal#holiday trip#Prague#actually disabled#narcolepsy#actually narcoleptic#positivity

armchair touristing around google maps per the online journal Prague Reporter's May 24, 2023, post:
"The second season of AMC’s Interview with the Vampire has been shooting at Prague’s Barrandov Studio over the past two months, and filming is now transitioning to locations across the Czech capital. Production on the series will take place adjacent to Old Town Square in Prague’s city center next week.
"Streets surrounding the city’s towering Church of Our Lady before Týn have been reserved for production on Interview with the Vampire, suggesting that interiors at the 14th century Prague landmark could be utilized for filming.
"In addition to the Týn Church, adjacent locations in Prague’s city center by Old Town Square might also be utilized for production on Interview with the Vampire."
Portions of Týnská ulička, Masná, Týnská, Dlouhá, and Pařížská streets in the vicinity of Old Town Square have all been reserved for production equipment for Interview with the Vampire from Sunday, May 28 through Saturday, June 3.
idk a gd thing about where they're actually shooting, but the streets mentioned are gorgeous (note these google map images are largely from 2017 & 2019, let's assume the construction pictured is long over)
here it is on google maps. here are some screen grabs:
Dlouhá:

on the map above, that little corner to the upper right of Týn Church? that's our theater. (it's tight quarters; pictured below. DIRECTLY opposite is the church)

[week 1] Hello -> Bonjour -> Dobrý den!
Dobrý den everyone!
Welcome back to my blog where this week I’ll be doing a deep dive into my first full week here in Prague! It’s been a crazy two weeks so before I get into my experience in Prague thus far, here are some pictures from my time in Paris right before my program started.
The flight into Prague was very quick from Paris and went very smoothly thankfully. At the airport, I was able to meet several other CEA CAPA students before we met the CEA staff who took us to our housing from the airport which was about an hour drive. My apartment is in Prague 1 which is a very centrally located district that is busy but close to everything that the city has to offer. I was placed in an apartment with 6 other guys and shockingly have my own private room which is actually pretty spacious.
After we arrived on Thursday, my roommates and I explored a little bit but were unfortunately caught in a thunderstorm and got soaked on our way back. On the bright side, it was a great way to get acquainted with each other right off the start lol. The next day we had our orientation which consisted of a virtual morning session and a longer in-person session at the CEA CAPA center where we learned a bit more about the program, Czech culture, and did a walking tour of the area.
Over that first weekend, myself and a bunch of the other CEA CAPA students decided to explore our new host city and witness some of the most unique gothic architecture that Europe has to offer. We also had the opportunity to experience the lively nightlife before our classes got started. Each place was very interesting but was unified by deep roots in modern techno music which can be found all over the city from clubs to even restaurants. During the days we explored Old Town Square which is the neighborhood adjacent to the CEA CAPA center housing amazing churches, the astronomical clock, and some insane buildings. On our walk from our apartment, we found a local flea market selling a plethora of cool items, produce, and food, like this giant kielbasa sausage (it was amazing). We also tried out this touristy restaurant where they serve drinks and food by little trains which was such a fun experience!
Moving into our first official week of classes, I’ll give a breakdown of their structure and my initial thoughts. Firstly, I am taking Engineering Statistics as my technical course where I have classes for 2.5 hours on Monday and Wednesday morning. For my humanity, I’m taking Cross Cultural Management where I have class for 3 hours Monday to Wednesday for only the first 4 weeks of the program. So far I love my classes and find that the workload is very manageable. The four-day weekends are extremely nice too because it makes weekend trips so much easier to plan out (my bank account is not happy about this). As for the CEA CAPA center itself, it is very modern and honestly a great space to meet fellow students and hang out in between classes. Here’s a quick time-lapse of my walk to class which takes me about 15 minutes.
Since I will likely not be in Prague for most of the weekends, I decided to explore as much of the city and touristy spots as possible after my classes were done for the week. My roommates and I went to Prague castle, a bunch of gardens, the John Lennon wall, and Petrin tower to list a few! We mainly walked to all of these places but to touch on public transportation, it’s incredibly easy to use and primarily consists of trams and the metro.
Sorry for the super long blog, but that's it for the recap of our first week! A little bit of a spoiler for next week but my friends and I will be going to Copenhagen so be on the lookout for my next blog! Thank you so much for reading and I’ll see y’all next week!
