Разрабатывалась такая система для того, чтобы избавить телефоны VolP от дополнительного источника питания. На сегодняшний день PoE используется и во многих других устройствах. Особенно в тех случаях, когда нет возможности проведения отдельного электрокабеля. Например, к установленной под потолком видеокамере. PoE позволяет управлять удаленным от питания оборудованием: включать, временно выключать, перезагружать при зависании или обновлении. Питающими устройствами могут являются следующие: 🔸 роутер; 🔸 инжектор; 🔸 коммутатор Особенность этих аппаратов заключается в том, что они непосредственно раздают питание и могут самостоятельно запитываются от PoE. На практике питающие устройства подразделяются на два типа: 🔸 End-Span — подает питание от начала кабельной линии (к примеру коммутатор до камеры видеонаблюдения); 🔸 Mid-Span — подключается не с начала кабельной линии, а дополнительно между коммутатором и конечным PoE-потреблением (например, свичи с питанием по PoE и «прозрачным каналом» — способные передавать питание дальше, или PoE-инжекторы, которые подают электропитание в сетевой кабель). PoE-потребителями обычно являются видеокамеры и VolP-маршрутизаторы. Также от PoE питаются IP-телефоны, некоторые датчики контроля и управления, СКУД, точки доступа и прочие устройства.
