Just remembered that Amon has a portrait of himself before his boss battle, just in case you were really straining to remember who he was @nongunktional

(saw this on my first Syrcus Tower after the graphical update when I was walking through it like a tourist... I have since returned to tunnel vision but it was nice catching this detail while it felt fresh to visit XD)

I don't think the shounen genre is a good fit for tite kubo. I think he's good at drawing manga on a craft & cadence level. he should be given the opportunity to do something else

Awhile back, I posted about "The Superhuman Feats of King Arthur and his Knights", showing how unbelievably powerful Arthur and his warriors are actually depicted in the Pre-Modern/Medieval stories.
When reviewing Didot Perceval's Mort Artu section for my "King Lot in the Chronicle Tradition" series, I came to the startling realization that I undersold how fucking strong Sir Gawain actually is:
Tumblr media
The only thing that can measure up to this kill-count is Arthur's original Badon Hill kill-count from Nennius, at "960 Saxons in a single charge". (It's implied that's not even Arthur's total kill-count from Badon)
This tidbit massively highlights how hard the Romances had to nerf Gawain so that Lancelot and Tristan can be seen as the greatest knights. According the Romances, there are six people Gawain couldn't beat: Lancelot, Hector, Bors, Tristan, Gaheriet and Morholt. Malory, for his part, says its Lancelot, Tristan, Bors, Percival, Pelleas, Marhaus (Morholt).
But for all the hype Lancelot, Tristan and these later characters receive from the French storytellers, their prowess never quite matches the over-the-top extremes of the OG characters - Arthur, Kay, Bedivere and, of course, Gawain.
Arthur in particular (if you've read my aforementioned post) had to be nerfed multiple times so he wouldn't upstage the new characters; from the original 960 kills in Nennius to 470 kills in Geoffrey, and later, by the time of Malory, to just 20 kills with 40 wounded in a random battle. And this is still more impressive (in my POV) than the victories of Lancelot, Tristan and Lamorak in the Tournament at the end of Book 7 (Lancelot defeated 50 knights at once, Tristan 40, and Lamorak 30).
Maybe because of how the French, and later English, Medieval audiences could only suspend their disbelief so far, Lancelot and Tristan mostly just kill scores of men occasionally, rarely killing up to a hundred+ knights. Meanwhile, the OG trio of Arthur, Kay and Bedivere - because they came from Celtic Myth - have triple digit kill-counts all the time (in Arthur's case, upper triple digit).
And here, in Didot, Gawain just makes Lamorak and his dad look really unimpressive by comparison. They're not even in the same league as the older versions of Gawain.

orv scratches that good gamer itch in my brain because i learned about the term "ludonarrative resonance" once in class and now every time i see a mechanic that serves as storytelling fuel i start screeching with delight

The hardcore sci-fi+ xenofiction parts of my brain are always on the lookout for literally anything I can use to extrapolate the culture of saiyans
I just hate how unreliable Vegeta technically is as anecdotal evidence bc he was only like 6 when his species disappeared so there's lots of stuff he wouldn't know bc it wasn't important either at his age or to someone in his position
What would a six year old prince need to know about child rearing. Nothing. Or the gathering of non-meat foods. He would have had people to do that (probably, but actually WE DON'T KNOW)
Ough. I would gladly write a saiyan culture textbook if I thought anybody would read it
Bring Nappa back so I can ask him about Saiyan courtship.

I like how whenever medievalists draw an analogy between inquisition and Cheka and/or the GPU there's always a little comment to the effect of "Dzerzhinsky could mop the fucking floor with Gui. Btw"
