Excerpt from this story from the New York Times:
At first glance, Dave Langston’s predicament seems similar to headaches facing homeowners in coastal states vulnerable to catastrophic hurricanes: As disasters have become more frequent and severe, his insurance company has been losing money. Then, it canceled his coverage and left the state.
But Mr. Langston lives in Iowa.
Relatively consistent weather once made Iowa a good bet for insurance companies. But now, as a warming planet makes events like hail and wind storms worse, insurers are fleeing.
Mr. Langston spent months trying to find another company to insure the townhouses, on a quiet cul-de-sac at the edge of Cedar Rapids, that belong to members of his homeowners association. Without coverage, “if we were to have damage that hit all 17 units, we’re looking at bankruptcy for all of us,” he said.
The insurance turmoil caused by climate change — which had been concentrated in Florida, California and Louisiana — is fast becoming a contagion, spreading to states like Iowa, Arkansas, Ohio, Utah and Washington. Even in the Northeast, where homeowners insurance was still generally profitable last year, the trends are worsening.
In 2023, insurers lost money on homeowners coverage in 18 states, more than a third of the country, according to a New York Times analysis of newly available financial data. That’s up from 12 states five years ago, and eight states in 2013. The result is that insurance companies are raising premiums by as much as 50 percent or more, cutting back on coverage or leaving entire states altogether. Nationally, over the last decade, insurers paid out more in claims than they received in premiums, according to the ratings firm Moody’s, and those losses are increasing.
The growing tumult is affecting people whose homes have never been damaged and who have dutifully paid their premiums, year after year. Cancellation notices have left them scrambling to find coverage to protect what is often their single biggest investment. As a last resort, many are ending up in high-risk insurance pools created by states that are backed by the public and offer less coverage than standard policies. By and large, state regulators lack strategies to restore stability to the market.
Insurers are still turning a profit from other lines of business, like commercial and life insurance policies. But many are dropping homeowners coverage because of losses.
Tracking the shifting insurance market is complicated by the fact it is not regulated by the federal government; attempts by the Treasury Department to simply gather data have been rebuffed by some state regulators.
The turmoil in insurance markets is a flashing red light for an American economy that is built on real property. Without insurance, banks won’t issue a mortgage; without a mortgage, most people can’t buy a home. With fewer buyers, real estate values are likely to decline, along with property tax revenues, leaving communities with less money for schools, police and other basic services.
And without sufficient insurance, people struggle to rebuild after disasters. Last year, storms, wildfires and other disasters pushed 2.5 million American adults out of their homes, according to census data, including at least 830,000 people who were displaced for six months or longer.

Right-Wing Media Sails On Despite Russian Scheme
It was the day before the most recent presidential debate and Benny Johnson, the popular right-wing podcaster and YouTube show host, was amplifying the latest falsehood—soon to be heard direct from Republican candidate Donald Trump’s mouth—that Haitian immigrants were dining on people’s cats. “This story is insane, all right!” Johnson chortled on The Benny Show. “I doubt any corporate media is going to go and tell the story of Springfield, Ohio, but we have to, actually, as our social obligation to you.”
The Sept. 9 video racked up more than 132,000 views and helps explain why The Benny Show has more than 2.4 million subscribers on YouTube. It also illuminates why its host—once the viral political editor of BuzzFeed before he was fired for multiple instances of plagiarism in 2014—was recruited by Tenet Media, a right-wing Tennessee-based media company identified by the US Department of Justice this month as a “covert project” of RT, the Russian state-controlled media outlet. “Benny used to say, ‘Do you know the difference between a good click and a bad click? They’re just clicks,’” recalls Bubba Atkinson, founder of Bubba News, a daily center-right newsletter, who worked with Johnson in the past. “I think that’s demonstrative of the ethos he lives by, where, you know, almost all attention is good for him.”
Johnson has issued a statement saying he was unaware of Tenet’s Kremlin ties. So have several of the company’s other prominent commentators, most notably the self-described red-pilled former leftist Dave Rubin and skateboarding libertarian Tim Pool. That may very well be true. Still, that such relatively big names in right-wing circles could find themselves entangled with anti-American forces—wittingly or unwittingly—speaks volumes about the state of conservative media in the age of Trump.
If you think of the hierarchy of the right-wing media world, particularly on the personality side, as a three-tiered pyramid, the top is occupied by Fox News figures like Trump cheerleader Sean Hannity. Go down a level, and you’ll find Ben Shapiro and his co-hosts at the Daily Wire, the Nashville company aspiring to be a right-wing Walt Disney Co. Then there’s a third tier of self-employed figures like Johnson, Pool and Rubin. Without the protection or the guardrails of an employer, they must compete for traffic with everybody else and have a financial incentive to go to extremes.
That could mean Johnson mocking the Fulton County, Georgia, district attorney and Trump nemesis Fani Willis as “Big Fani,” or Pool hosting alt-right figures such as Richard Spencer and former Breitbart News senior editor Milo Yiannopoulos, who’ve been largely shunned for good reason elsewhere in conservative circles. But that only seems to have made Tenet’s commentators more attractive to RT. According to the indictment, their messages “are often consistent with the Government of Russia’s interest in amplifying US domestic divisions.”
“Look, the Russians were not stupid,” says Rick Wilson, co-founder of the anti-Trump Lincoln Project and a former Republican political consultant. “They recognized that these guys are very much influencers who can spread the kind of messages they wanted distributed to a wider audience, to drive social media engagement through the roof.” (Neither Tenet nor Johnson, Pool or Rubin responded to interview requests for this story.)
Given the nature of their businesses, the Tenet figures were also clearly more susceptible to the dangling of large checks—in at least one instance, $100,000 per video—than their peers with cushier employment arrangements. As Pool put it in an appearance on The Ben Shapiro Show after the indictment’s unveiling, he gets these kinds of offers all the time. “When someone reaches out to us, I say, ‘Great, cool. Someone handle it and talk to the lawyers,’” Pool told Shapiro. “The lawyers come back, do their due diligence, and then we say sure—or whatever.”
He added, “We have people tweeting at me, like, give the money back. Like dude, let me put it this way, we’re talking to our legal department.”
None of this impresses Cenk Uygur, founder of TYTs, a progressive online news network, who has appeared on Pool’s show—or at least he did before the news of the host’s RT connection. “Come on, man, somebody gives you $100,000 a video?” Uygur says. “That makes me ask, are other people giving you $100,000 a video? And who are they? If this is so normal, how often does this happen for right-wing media? And who else is giving you money for propaganda?”
As for Johnson, he’s continuing to rack up views on YouTube. Despite his association with Tenet, he’s had little trouble getting prominent Republicans to appear, including sitting members of Congress. The Benny Show goes on.

Since the extinguish of the Seven Assholes, Zarathos has been suckered into a wild goose chase after her next target. An old witch who goes by the name of Ruby, if that’s her actual name or a new moniker to at least feel like her memories aren’t vanishing. That bitch has been hightailing it since The Ryder’s seen her at the abandoned house, chasing after her into the dark.
To be honest, Zarathos didn’t really know a whole lot about the demon. She was old yet younger than her, never vocal about her take on the civil war, and had a pungent smell. It wasn’t hard to follow her. All you had to do was inhale and if you nearly hurl your heart out, she’s close.
If there’s one thing about The Ryder, she wasn’t a dog. She’s a hunter. And she has another target buried in fucking Ohio.
Elizabethville used to be a town filled with half-dead, workaholics and even laid off alcoholics, but now it was home to a new era. Streets lined with bars, hookers, and addicts; the once abysmal town was lively. It was like a scene straight from Ocean’s Eleven yet the only thing being stolen were people’s souls.
Settled in the back of the rambunctious bar, Zarathos sips her whiskey neat while crowd watching. As her eyes cross over to the entrance, two familiar figures walk in, bags slung at their sides. Clenching the glass in her gasp, the hunter nearly bristles, gritting her teeth.
She watches as the two stand at the bar, amused smiles draping their chiseled features after the bartender walks away. Behind them, a man walks in, his aura lot more depressing than the atmosphere of the bar.
He reaches the pool table where another man plays. “Hi John,” he greets the man. His face didn’t convey an itch of emotion. The man, John, looks up with concern. “Reggie. Everything okay with you?”
“I don’t know,” he answers. “I’m just not feeling myself today.”
The Ryder leans forward, her eyes catching sight of the gun in his hands. She shakes her head, sitting back. It’s not like she’s a good guy nor a bad guy. All she does is follow her contract and serve justice where it’s needed, not her job to teach what decisions are good and vice versa.
Reggie raises the gun without blinking, firing a shot into the other man. The locals inside the bar scream, panic fills the room as everyone scatters for an escape far from the victim, his assailant, and the weapon. Just as Reggie aims the gun underneath his chin, Dean tackles him to the side and wrestles the gun from his hands.
Sam walks over, tentatively, and sprinkles bits of holy water onto the man. Zarathos’ nose scrunches at the smell, but the fumes weren’t enough to hide her amusement. Neither Reggie nor John were demons, this she knew. Instead, they were pawns. Every Elizabethville local was a pawn in her target’s game, and she had a hunch on who it was.
Setting the empty glass on the table, she generously takes her time on leaving the bar. As she stands, the sole essence of calm amongst the crowd of terror, Sam looks her way; eyes steeled with irritation, hell, confusion maybe. As he blinks, eyes bouncing to the bar owner and back to Zarathos, the skeleton rider was gone in the wind with a quick salute.
Idiots. Suicidal fucking idiots. They look sexy as hell but are just himbos who need babysat. Zarathos rides through the neighborhood, using hellfire she tracks Dean and the bartender. She pulls into the driveway, ignoring the concerned Sam checking on Bobby. The younger Winchester watches her with wide eyes.
“You…” he whispers, watching as her once dark flesh breaks away under the flames.
Reaching the crashed in living room, she takes a deep inhale, allowing a tornado of scents to overcome her. She twitches, catching Ruby’s, however, she forces herself to focus on Dean.
Following the small bits of debris and mutters, she enters the basement where the bartender and pastor stand across from the green-eyed idiot. The pastor’s hand grasps onto Dean’s throat, eyes glaring into his as the woman whispers her pleas.
Whipping the flaming chain around the pastor’s neck, he freezes in pain with wide eyes. His flesh hardens, cracks decorating his figure as bursts of orange light gleam through. The woman watches in distress before suffering the same fate. Now dropped and gasping for a breath, Dean watches as the flaming figure saves his ass for the second time in a row.
As she stands over him, his green eyes stare into her empty ones. “Who, ugh,” he grunts, “who the hell are you?”
Rather than answering, she tilts her head to the side, the flames mimic her movement. “Your… savior… idiot,” she finally replies.
Before he can retort, he looks over at the sound of rushed footsteps coming their way. Seeing his little brother charge in, a familiar gun raised, the man’s once surprised expression drops.
Pathetically raising a hand, he shouts, “Sam, no!”
Seconds too late, the younger man fires a round into The Ryder’s skeletal chest. The creature stumbles back, her flames flickering as the power of the Colt filters through her system until the bullet is pushed out, clacking against the stone floor. Reverting to her human appearance, her now sweat drenched form glares at the man.
Dean scrambles to his feet at the sight of her. As she takes a step for his brother, he steps in her path, hands gently pushing against her broad chest.
“Wait, please, no.” He pants, “not him.” He then turns to Sam, “just stop. Don’t shoot.” He looks back at her, “I just… we, just, need to talk.”
Reaching the town, Dean and Zarathos stand outside of the main plaza against her bike. “You know,” he coughs, “outside of the whole burning skeleton thing, you are a sight for sore eyes. Mind tellin’ me how you do that? What the hell are you?”
“I don’t know how I do it. For as long as I could remember, I always had a human form,” she answers. “The demons call me The Ryder, Hell’s Bloodhound. Outside of that, I don’t know what I am. I’m not a demon that’s for damn sure.”
His face scrunches, “and how’re you so sure? Ya better than them or some?”
She chuckles, “better than them? Kid, you hurt my feelings. They’re nowhere on my level. Besides, demons aren’t just made of thin air. They were humans at first. Humans who took dark paths and succumbed to the darkness.”
“And you were never human before?”
She shakes her head, “not from what I can remember. That’s why when demons wish to stand topside, they find vessels to keep a low cover and add a little flare to some crossroad deals.”
He sits in silence, watching over the crowd of locals that walk by. “Why save me, twice?” His jaw notches, “is it because of my deal? I still have a year left.”
She hums, “nah. I don’t have anything to do with that. I merely saved your ass because you got in the way.”
“Excuse me?” He glances at her.
“You heard me. I’m a hunter, Winchester. My job is to round up sinners on a regular and yet after that stint in Wyoming, I’ve had to herd the cattle back to Hell and you’re in my way.”
He shrugs, “sorry, not sorry. Hey, you think this town will ever change?”
She scoffs, “hell no. if there’s one thing detrimental about humans it’s that you lot are impressionable. Once you’ve scratched the itch in the back of your head, you’re gone. This town? They’re in far too deep, especially since another human is leading them further to the doors of Hell.”
“If you’re done giving me the third degree, I have a job to get to,” she straddles the leather seat of her motorcycle. “Do you think Sam, my brother, is okay?”
She scoffs, “he’s a hunter who was poisoned by Azazel, he’s never okay.”
Dean kisses his teeth, “not that. When I made the deal and he was brought to life, Azazel mentioned that he might’ve changed. Do you think my brother will be okay?” As he stares down into her amber gaze, searching for any lies.
“I mean, he died. Death appears differently for everyone, even treats them differently. What came back with your brother was probably nothing or it might just be a darker, unhinged part of his consciousness. I don’t know, but as long you keep protecting him, he’ll be fine.”
He nods, looking off towards the hotel. “And what do you know of a demon named Ruby?”
Involuntarily, a growl echoes in her chest. “A smelling bitch who prefers word vomiting than walkin’ the walk. She’s one of the demons on ‘Return at Once’ list, damn near nobody in Hell likes her. If you see her, send her ass back down under.”
Zarathos starts her engine, the roar fluttering through his chest. Dean watches her for a bit, “say, if we ever need, ya know, help or anythin’, how do we call you?”
Sliding a pair of sunglasses over her eyes, she smirks, “you don’t. I come whenever I want to, kid. Remember, stay out of the way.” She rides off, following the road out of town.
Watching her ride into the sun, Bobby walks up behind him with squinting eyes. “So what was that all about?”
Dean shrugs, “I guess I, uh, have a guardian angel?” The older man side eyes him, “repeat that for me. A what?”
He repeats, “a guardian angel. A devilish one, at that. She’s a hunter, for Hell. Lassos all the escaped demons and sinners and sends them to the underworld.”
“Hell’s own police force, huh?” Bobby’s eyebrows raise. “Well, I’ll be damned. You think she’ll be another demon problem?”
Dean shakes his head, “not her. She’s not a demon, but that doesn’t mean we’re in the clear, yet.” The man nods, “good to know you’re thinking.”
“I know you’re not,” he fires back. Bobby looks at him, “what? What the hell are you yappin’ about now?”
He nods his head over at the hotel. “Ruby helped you with the Colt. You came here with her, if anyone’s not thinking’, it’s you and Sam.”
“Ruby is helping us,” Bobby argues. “She’s helping us save you. Hell, she helped us with this goddamn Colt, you idjit.”
Dean’s jaw ticks, “and why do you think that is? The bitch is a demon, and her ass needs saving. She’s on The Ryder’s hitlist and boy, is she excited to send her ass back to where she came from.”
“You really believe that thing?” Dean shrugs, “not like Ruby saved our asses without laying out her terms. When it came to Ryder, all she wanted was for us to stay out the way. So, you tell me who to believe and who to kill.”

Following the Supreme Court’s elimination of the federal right to abortion in June, conservatives have taken aim at other fundamental protections, such as same-sex marriage and access to contraception. But some on the right are resurfacing a different, long-simmering project: stigmatizing divorce, including, in some instances, attacking no-fault divorce laws.
No-fault divorce in the U.S. was first adopted in California in 1969, and New York was the last state in the country to pass a no-fault divorce law, which it did in 2010. Although state laws differ, in general no-fault divorce means that one party can successfully dissolve a marriage without needing to first prove wrongdoing by the other partner – including adultery, abuse, or desertion.
Ohio Republican Senate nominee J.D. Vance praised the idea of staying in violent marriages in remarks to high school students in southern California last September. Vance argued “all of us should be honest” about how “making it easier for people to shift spouses like they change their underwear” by leaving marriages that were “maybe even violent” had negative effects on the children, according to Vice, which first reported the comments.
Although Vance’s comments were made before the overturning of Roe v. Wade, they’ve taken on a new salience amid a conservative movement that sees formerly out-of-reach goals as newly attainable. And Vance has lots of company in right-wing media.
youtube
Reactionary YouTuber Tim Pool recently discussed no-fault divorce laws on his show, titling the clipped segment: “No-Fault Divorce Has DESTROYED Men's Confidence In Marriage, Men Don't Want To Get Married Anymore.” The discussion focused on how no-fault divorce laws were to blame for what the panel perceived to be a rise in prenuptial agreements, which segued into a meandering discussion lamenting divorce in general.
“The courts are heavily biased in favor of women to an insane degree, especially with children,” Pool said, parroting a cliche often espoused by so-called men’s rights activists, an anti-feminist movement that claims men are structurally disadvantaged in divorce proceedings and family court. (Although it is true that women are generally granted sole custody more frequently than men, the reasons for that are complicated and have to do with men historically having higher incomes and sexist ideas about mothers being natural caregivers.)
Fellow conservative YouTuber Steven Crowder has also argued that no-fault divorce laws are disincentivizing young men to get married. In an unfocused June 24 rant calling for the Supreme Court to now overturn marriage equality rights conferred in Obergefell v. Hodges, Crowder said no-fault divorce laws are “a raw deal for a lot” of men.
“Oh, it’s no-fault divorce, which, by the way, means that in many of these states if a woman cheats on you, she leaves, she takes half,” Crowder said. “So it’s not no-fault, it’s the fault of the man.”
“There need to be changes to marital laws, and I’m not even talking about same-sex marriage,” he added. “Talking about divorce laws, talking about alimony laws, talking about child support laws.”
That wasn’t the first time Crowder has made the argument. After referring to “no-fault divorce states” using air quotes in an April 22 segment, he said, “It’s the only contract that I know of where one side is financially incentivized to break it.”
“If you’re a woman that comes from meager means, and you want to get wealthy – you’ve never worked, you didn’t get a degree, you have no skill set, but you’re good-looking – your best path to victory is simply to marry a man, leave him, and take half,” Crowder added. He later reiterated that “we need to reform divorce laws in this country.”
Some of the loudest anti-LGBTQ conservative voices are also the biggest critics of no-fault divorce, in both cases making an appeal to tradition and what they see as a God-given natural order while defending nakedly patriarchal power relations. Patriarchy depends on a rigid gender binary, with clearly defined roles and expectations; conservatives believe LGBTQ identities subvert this dynamic. Similarly, no-fault divorce laws upended patriarchal power, freeing women from de facto second-class status and dependence on men.
No one encapsulates this tendency more than the virulently anti-trans conservative pundit Matt Walsh. In defending Kanye West’s harassment and threatening behavior in March toward his estranged wife Kim Kardashian, who had recently filed for divorce, Walsh also argued that it should be more arduous to dissolve marriages.
Tumblr media
Walsh has made versions of this argument dating back to at least 2015, explicitly in the context of the supposed threat that same-sex marriage posed to heterosexual couples.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Walsh’s Daily Wire colleague Michael Knowles made the same point last year.
“We see the weakening of marriage through no-fault divorce," Knowles said. “This is a very bad turn of events.”
“Do you think society has gotten much better since the social and sexual revolutions of the 1960s? Or has it gotten a little bit worse?” Knowles asked. “Are we in a period of ascendancy or a period of decline?”
Knowles’ line is increasingly common on the right. Senior writer at National Review Online Dan McLaughlin also sees the liberation movements of the second half of the 20th century as a locus of social disintegration, recently linking gay marriage rights and no-fault divorce as twin aspects of a singular problem.
Tumblr media
Some conservatives are even more overt in their playbook. The right’s successful campaign to overturn Roe should serve as a “path by which campaigns for social change must be patterned,” Katy Faust and Stacy Manning write at The Federalist. “That’s especially true for those still willing to fight the battle for marriage.”
Faust and Manning run Them Before Us, which describes itself as “a global movement defending children’s right to their mother and father.”
In their piece, they present a hypothetical back-and-forth that activists can use to field questions, such as:
“If you really think family is so important then you must be against divorce.”
• Correct, no-fault divorce is the original re-definition of marriage and it has devastated the American family.
(The two also oppose same-sex marriage on the grounds that “children of gay couples lose maternal or paternal love and half their heritage.”)
Others on the right downplay this trend.
“As for no-fault divorce, it’s not entirely clear that the policy — while a tragic mistake, from the social-conservative perspective—actually features prominently in the mainstream Right’s priorities. (Which Republican is campaigning on repealing no-fault divorce?)” writes Nate Hochman at National Review. To answer the rhetorical question: the Texas Republican Party, for one, which includes in its 2022 platform a proposal “to rescind unilateral no-fault divorce laws and support covenant marriage and to pass legislation extending the period of time in which a divorce may occur to six months after the date of filing for divorce.”
Justice Clarence Thomas’ concurring opinion in the Supreme Court’s recent Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe, made it clear that aspects of the right are interested in rolling back marriage equality and contraception rights. “We have a duty to ‘correct the error’ established in those precedents," Thomas wrote. It’s not difficult to imagine a movement built on patriarchy targeting divorce laws next.

45. Deal prompt
It's cold and that makes me cranky.
Also I miss Kate and Simon.
“I can’t believe you actually want to go swimming. Here.”
What Deena means to say is anywhere because water and actually swimming around in it? Not her thing. But a disparaging comment about the Shadyside Public Pool basically encompasses all of those things, so Deena feels like she’s covered all her bases.
Not that Simon seems to notice or care. He just drops a towel -a bathroom towel, not even a ratty old beach towel like the one Deena had dug out of the hallway linen cabinet- onto a plastic lounge chair and kicks off his shoes. “What? It’s not so bad.”
Deena glances toward the pool, which is full of half a dozen children and one middle-aged woman determinedly swimming laps and maybe it doesn’t look so bad. Now. But. Give it time.
“I mean,” Simon continues, tugging off a shirt that says Ohio is for lovers that was probably Timothy’s, and adding it to the pile on his chair. “Kate works here.”
This, Deena thinks, is probably the only reason the pool looks as passable as it does now. Because with Kate Schmidt in charge, nothing is going to be half-assed. The pool water is clear. The concrete is free of trash and half-chewed gum and god only knows what else. The American Top 40 is playing on a stereo from somewhere by the life guard chair and it might be the nicest place in Shadyside right now.
Still doesn’t mean Deena is getting in the water.
Kate, who has been trying to coax them into agreeing to spend a summer afternoon at the pool to keep her company rather than languishing in Simon’s room talking about how bored they were, is currently talking to someone who looks like he imagines himself to be her boss, when really anyone who knows Kate knows who is actually in charge of this -and any- operation. She’s nodding, wearing an oversized hoodie over her swimsuit -likely because even Deena doesn’t miss the way the guy’s eyes keep drifting downward- and a pair of flipflops and one of those Baywatch whistles around her neck and Deena can’t wait to give her shit about all of it. But she resists the urge for now, since Kate is trying to be all professional, and instead she takes her old beach towel and spreads it across her own chair before taking a seat. The towel is from the trip her parents had taken her and Josh on to Coney Island Park in Cincinnati when she had been eight and Josh seven and their mom was still around and she’s pretty sure it’s been stuffed into the back of the closet ever since then.
Simon pulls a bottle of sunscreen from somewhere and begins slathering it across his arms in a way that makes Deena both love him and want to tease him mercilessly and before she gets the chance, Kate is walking over in their direction, the obnoxious slap of her flipflops announcing her arrival. She looks at Deena, quirking an eyebrow above her sunglasses. “You didn’t bring your suit?”
Deena gestures to herself, offended. “I’m wearing shorts.”
Shorts and a Stryper shirt that had once been her dad’s and sure it’s to cover up the swimsuit she’d reluctantly put on, but she has no intention of letting anyone prove that.
“As lifeguard, I’m obligated to tell you that shorts are not allowed in the pool,” Kate says in a way that manages to be both teasing and completely serious at the same time. “Sorry.”
Deena smirks. “You gonna blow your whistle at me?”
“You wish.” Kate smirks and then her attention is shifting, a smile sliding across her face that Deena most definitely does not like. “Oh, look. Sam is here.”
It’s embarrassing, how Deena’s cheeks immediately get hot. But even more embarrassing is the way her head immediately whips in the direction of the entrance, so fast she’s actually sure she can hear the bones cracking. Kate laughs but Deena ignores her, watching, instead, as Sam Fraser walks in with a bag slung over her shoulder and two other girls from the cheerleading squad beside her.
Simon snorts out a laugh, shaking his head. “Exactly. Why do you think Deena’s here?”
“That’s not…” Deena hisses, glaring at her friends and their stupid smirks.
“Then why did you suddenly decide you wanted to go to the pool today after I’ve been asking you all summer?”
Simon looks way too smug for someone who hasn’t rubbed in the sunscreen on his cheeks. Deena rolls her eyes at him and her efforts to sputter out a comeback are immediately foiled by Kate, who waves a hand over her head and calls, “Jennifer! Over here!” in a way that makes Deena want to shove her directly into the pool.
Jennifer, Ashley, and yes, Sam, immediately head for the empty chairs beside the ones Deena and Simon are currently occupying and Deena’s eyes meet Sam’s and immediately set off a flurry of emotions swirling around inside her chest. Being around Sam hasn’t gotten any easier recently but it’s gotten a hell of a lot harder to convince herself that not being around Sam is an option. Because now that she’s spent more than a few summer afternoons sitting in her bedroom listening to music and kissing Sam Fraser, that’s kinda all she ever wants to be doing.
And Deena is pretty sure it shows all over her face every time Sam is within ten feet of her.
The tradeoff is, of course, that Sam is within ten feet of her. And that’s hard to hate.
And yeah, the idea to come to the pool had been Sam’s, forcing Deena to swallow her pride and tell Simon, mostly apropos of nothing, that sure, she’d go with him to see Kate at the stupid pool, or whatever.
Her friends might see right through her, but the decision is already paying off.
Jennifer and Ashley say hello to Kate and regard Deena and Simon with the polite uncertainty that only teenagers are truly capable of, and with all the reluctance that comes from the forcible combining of two very different types of people that would never happen if not for people like Kate Schmidt. But Sam manages to set her bag into the chair next to Deena’s casually enough, even though it means having to step around Ashley to get there first and Deena bites the inside of her cheek to keep from smiling.
“Hi,” Sam says, and she’s got that shy smile on her face that Deena loves and not just because it comes with the shocking realization that she put it there. It also provides a great view of Sam’s dimple, which Deena is fond of pressing her lips to when they’re alone. Which she very much wishes they were right now.
Deena smiles like she’s just stuck a fork into an electrical outlet and zapped the common sense out of her brain.
“Where’s your suit?” Sam asks, and Deena really thinks she should get credit just for being here, thank you very much. “I thought you were going to swim.”
“I never said that,” Deena says, pleased to be able to use this same logic on Sam that she’d used on Simon when he’d said the same thing after he’d gotten into her car. “I said I was going to go to the pool.” She gestures as if to say ta da, please hold the applause.
Sam does not look impressed. “The whole point of coming to the pool is to go swimming.”
This, Deena figures, they will have to agree to disagree on.
Because the whole point of this outing is most definitely getting to see Sam take off her tank top and stuff it into her bag and holy hell actually maybe this was a bad idea because there’s so much more of Sam to see all of the sudden. They’ve been keeping it mostly PG so far in the privacy of Deena’s bedroom and it seems like every bad thought Deena has ever had is suddenly flying into brain right now and probably outing her in front of the entire Shadyside Public Pool population.
Maybe she will get into the pool after all. Clearly, she needs to cool off.
“So you aren’t swimming,” Sam says and Deena wonders what else has been said around her that she just hasn’t been privy to. Kate is talking to Ashley and Jennifer and swinging her whistle around on her finger while Simon continues applying sunscreen with the studious focus of an overbearing mother and no one seems to have noticed that Deena is a pile of ash in the shape of a girl.
“No, Deena doesn’t swim,” Simon says before Deena can remember how words work. “She just likes to sit there and look pretty,” he teases, nudging her thigh with his bare foot.
Deena reaches over to give him a shove, almost toppling him off his chair, but she doesn’t miss the way Sam blushes and presses her teeth to her bottom lip and okay there are worse things than having Samantha Fraser think that she’s pretty.
Sam arches an eyebrow, looking at Deena for a beat before she says, “I bet I could get Deena in the pool.”
Deena rolls her eyes, but Simon sits up straighter, intrigued. “Oh yeah?”
Sam nods, reaching up to put her hair into a messy knot and Deena finds herself fixated on the movement of her wrists, the deft motions of her fingers. Those are good wrists. Pretty good fingers, too. “Yup.”
“Hmm, no way,” Simon says firmly. “I don’t think you’ve got what it takes.”
“Hello? I’m literally sitting right here,” Deena points out, looking between the two of them.
Predictably, they both ignore her. “Wanna bet?” Sam says and she tilts her head and really Deena feels like she can’t be held responsible for the way her pulses races at that flex of Sam’s neck.
Simon doesn’t even ask for clarification on the perimeters of this particular bet. He just nods, leaning across Deena’s chair and holding out his hand. “Deal.”
Sam leans closer to shake Simon’s hand and Deena looks between the both of them trying to figure out what she missed when she was too busy studying the freckles on Sam’s shoulder. There’s no way she’s going to be able to avoid pressing her lips to that spot the next time they’re in her bedroom. Being with Sam is starting to make her greedy. Selfish.
Sam leans back and when she looks at Deena, Deena just smirks, lifting an eyebrow. “Good luck.”
“Oh, come on,” Sam says with a laugh and when she shakes her head, some twists of hair fall loose from her ponytail. She glances over her shoulder and when she’s satisfied that Ashley and Jennifer are still involved in their conversation with Kate, she leans forward, peering at Deena through her lashes. “You won’t even do it for me?”
And. Well. Something goes all fizzy in her brain when Sam looks at her like that, something that makes her feel all giddy and stupid and like she might do all kinds of things that Deena had been certain she never would. Like stop hiding all those parts of herself, if only around this person. Like make dumb, sickly romantic mix-tapes and doodle messy, crooked hearts on the liner notes.
Like, apparently, get into the Shadyside Public Pool.
There are certainly worse things than having Sam owe her a favor, after all. Her motives are purely selfish.
So Deena stands and reluctantly steps out of her shorts and pulls her shirt over her head, avoiding meeting both Sam and Simon’s gazes as she does so, spending far too much time folding up the clothes and sticking them beneath her towel to protect them from any annoying kids trying to cannonball into the deep end.
But when she chances a look back in Sam’s direction, there’s this look on Sam’s face that immediately ignites a fire low in Deena’s belly and she’s certain that if anyone were to look at them now, every one of their secrets would be on full display and for that moment, the beat of time where everything seems to slow down and her eyes are on Sam’s, she doesn’t even care. All of Shadyside could burn down around her and she wouldn’t care about that either. Because all she does care about is the way Sam is looking at her, lips slightly parted and with dots of color on her cheeks, and Deena gets a glimpse of how she must look to Sam every time they’re alone together, like she can’t believe she’s somehow managed to get lucky enough to be in this moment. She’d just never thought anyone would ever have cause to look at her that way.
And there are definitely worse things than having Sam Fraser think that she’s pretty.
It kinda makes the whole having to get into the pool thing actually worth it.
Even though she has her regrets as she actually gets into the water, because it’s cold, and she doesn’t want to doubt Kate’s prowess as a lifeguard or anything, but she suddenly has her doubts about the whole cleanliness thing but well there’s no turning back now.
And when Deena surfaces, pushing back her wet curls, Sam is giving Simon a smug look and Simon is scowling, though it seems to be mostly for show. Especially when Simon mutters, “I feel like something about what happened counts a cheating.”
But Sam shrugs and Deena glares at the both of them. “Okay. Does this make you happy, weirdos? I got in the pool. Best summer ever.” She rolls her eyes for good measure.
Simon nods solemnly. “A momentous day.”
“Great,” Deena says flatly. She looks at Sam, reaching out a hand. “Can you please help me out now?”
Really, it’s totally Sam’s fault. Because who would ever fall for something like that. So, really, she only has herself to blame for actually getting up and offering her hand to Deena’s and for being completely unprepared and defenseless when Deena yanks her forwarrd and into the pool.
Deena is still laughing when Sam surfaces, spitting out Shadyside Public Pool water -which, you know, Deena does feel a little bad about because she’s not a monster- and looking at Deena with her eyes wide with betrayal. “Deena!”
“What? I thought the point of coming to the pool was to go swimming?”
And, sure, she probably deserves the way that Sam splashes her and now she’s spitting out Shadyside Public Pool water so they’re obviously even. Deena splashes her back and Sam reaches for her wrists, forcing them underwater and protecting herself from further splashing and it suddenly clicks that no one is going to be able to see what they’re doing underwater, not unless they’re really paying attention. And it must occur to Sam, too, because she lets go of Deena’s wrists and takes her hands instead, letting their fingers twine together.
Deena brushes her finger across the inside of Sam’s wrist, earning a soft smile in response, and her world becomes just this girl in front of her and maybe the pool isn’t so terrible after all because it lets her do this, to hold Sam as close as she can and still have it feel like a secret.
And then Simon jumps in behind Sam, spraying the both of them with water and Deena rolls her eyes, making a face. “Okay, that’s enough. I’m out.”
Sam laughs, and she hooks her fingers around Deena’s for one final moment before letting Deena pull away and hoist herself out of the pool. Simon surfaces, grinning, and Deena kicks water at him. “You’re the worst. You know that right?”
“Am I?” Simon responds, like he knows something she doesn’t, and Deena splashes more water in his direction for good measure.
Deena walks back to her chair, leaving Sam and Simon to hash out the details of Sam winning their ridiculous deal, and she grabs her towel, wrapping it around her shoulders and stretching out across the sun-warmed plastic. And sure, maybe Kate was right about hanging out at the pool being better than laying around on Simon’s floor and bemoaning life in Shadyside, but it’s not like Deena is going to tell her that.

An old news article about the creator of Zula Patrol from 2009 providing some background on the show.
Will port the news article in a read more.
The gig: Creator of “The Zula Patrol,” a Saturday morning cartoon watched by 2 million children a week on NBC and public television stations, and Zula World, an online hangout for kids built by IBM Corp. In Los Angeles, the show airs Saturday mornings on NBC and Monday mornings on KCLS public television.
First career: Manchester, 52, was an audiologist in Ohio for 15 years.
Eureka moment No. 1: In 1994, she sold her audiology practice and enrolled in a two-year animation program at Ohio State University. “I always told myself that if I stopped having fun with my job, I’d become an animator.” It took 11 years after making the career switch until her first show aired.
How she came up with Zula: While in animation school, Manchester tore her left Achilles tendon and was in a cast for six months. She tried to find a cover for her cast that would keep her exposed toes warm in the winter. Finding none, she decided to design and sell one. She contracted with a textile manufacturer to produce the covers, which she sold to pharmacies and medical supply shops. The covers for kids sported friendly alien creatures she had designed.
She wrote a children’s book to go with the covers. In 1999, she took it to a book fair in Los Angeles, where she met three television producers scouting for new properties. One hooked her up with Phil Roman, executive producer of “The Simpsons” and “King of the Hill.” Roman encouraged her to create a demo. She made two, each 15 minutes long, which she pitched to network executives for the next two years.
The low point: All the networks rejected her. “The early rejections were heavy blows. But honestly, they just made me dig in deeper and work harder. A lot of times, people look at a roadblock and think it’s the end of the road when it’s not.”
How she dug out: Between 2000 and the fall of 2005, when her show debuted on public television, she visited more than 100 schools to get feedback from students and educators. She also pitched her show to science museums. Two of them, the Adler Planetarium in Chicago and the Center of Science and Industry in Columbus, Ohio, used her cartoons in their children’s programs.
To scrape by, she made money designing websites and working as a part-time audiologist.
The big break: In 2002, American Public Television said it would distribute her show if she could get the funding needed to make the episodes.
Manchester landed a fellowship in 2003 with Springboard Enterprises, a nonprofit group that helps female entrepreneurs connect with investors.
After spending six months developing a business plan and fine-tuning her pitch, she made a 10-minute presentation at a Springboard event in Chicago that caught the eye of the proverbial “someone who knew someone.”
Her benefactor, who wishes to remain anonymous, was also a supporter of the Adler Planetarium.
“Usually children’s shows are funded by numerous entities. It makes producing the show difficult from a creative standpoint. By the time your show gets done, it’s a watered-down version of what your vision was.”
Her benefactor took the opposite tack.
“He left me with complete creative control. He told me, ‘If you succeed, it will be your success. If you fail, it will be your failure.’ That’s been incredibly helpful.”
What next: Manchester anticipates that her company will be profitable this year for the first time. She’s teaming with IBM for this month’s launch of Zula World, a subscription website where children will be able to explore and learn about science topics as diverse as tide pools and tundras, atoms and asteroids.

As climate change produces more extreme weather, insurers are losing money, even in states with low hurricane and wildfire danger. Across the country, insurers are facing more bad years than good years. If this trend continues, it could destabilize the broader economy.
Tumblr media
Excerpt from this story from the New York Times:
To understand what’s happening in the insurance industry, The New York Times interviewed more than 40 insurance executives, brokers, officials and homeowners in a dozen states, and also reviewed financial records from insurers in all 50 states going back more than a decade.

DANNY SYLVESTER
☆ FULL NAME: Danny Sue Sylvester ☆ GENDER: Cisman ☆ PRONOUNS: He/Him ☆ AGE: 32 (June 29th, 1992) ☆ TYPE: Adopted sibling; solo ☆ HOMETOWN: Cleveland, Ohio ☆ JOB: Bartender and sometimes Security Guard at The Spare Room ☆ SCHOOL: PSU Alumni/dropout ☆ SEXUALITY: Heterosexual ☆ FACECLAIM: Dacre Montgomery
ABOUT DANNY
Danny Sue Sylvester was born Daniel Michael Schuester, but had no idea of this at all. Will and Emma Schuester were overjoyed to find out that they were having a baby boy, their first child, and once he was born he was the apple of their eye. Until on some dark, cold night, someone stole away into their home and kidnapped baby Daniel, and punched Will in the face. The Schuesters fought long and hard to try and find their son, not stopping at any cost, including pooling together a lot of money in a campaign to find him, but he was gone. A few years later though, under some strange coincidence, Will's rival Sue Sylvester had announced that she'd adopted herself a toddler who she named Danny, in honor of the Schuester's missing boy that they still hadn't found.
Growing up as the son of Sue Sylvester doesn't exactly mean that Danny had a normal childhood. In high school his grades weren't great and his teachers threatened to hold him back a few years but after a brief conversation with his mother the subject was soon dropped, and Danny found himself getting straight A's and also being handed a lot more things. He was soon quarterback of the football team, captain of the basketball team, dating the head cheerleader with really rich parents and a model for his mother's athleisure wear company, and he didn't have to lift a finger, it was great. Deciding he wanted to play football professionally, and hinting to his mother that the Philadelphia Eagles were the team he wanted to play for, he headed to PSU to major in marketing in case Sue ever needed his help with the company.
But things wouldn't be that perfect forever. When home for the holidays during his second year, Danny was searching through the house for his birth certificate to make a copy of it for future use as his mother was always the one to handle that sort of stuff. But he couldn't find it and instead found some interesting paper work about a baby boy born the same day as him, and mentions of bribery and blackmail to certain doctors and police chiefs. Sue soon caught him snooping around in her room, (which she normally kept heavily guarded but he'd found a way in when he was fourteen and never told her) and he questioned her about everything he had just read, getting angry and yelling, Sue had to come clean and tell him everything. Danny was shocked, betrayed, furious, so many different things and he couldn't believe that he was actually the biological son of the couple that his mother had taught him to hate. He quickly stormed out and never looked back, dropping all contact with his mother and his siblings.
In his time away Danny spiralled out of control, getting into a lot of trouble and fights and even getting arrested a few times. But although he refused to talk to his mother, he still milked money from her for his bail, deciding not to change his surname to make it easier to have that connection back to her. Soon enough Sue cut him off, saying that if he was truly a Sylvester and not a weak, pathetic Schuester, then he'd stop being an embarrassment. Danny's response was to block her number and try to make it on his own. It didn't work exactly and he jumped from job to job trying to make ends meet, even ending up homeless at one point, making him even more bitter towards his mother. But now to finally get one back at her and cause some more chaos he's settled in LA, planning on telling the Schuester's everything. And getting a job near PSU so he can keep an eye on all his siblings. He doesn't blame any of them for what happened and still cares about them in his own weird way, plus he wants to get to know his other siblings, the Schuesters, too.
FAMILY BACKGROUND
Sue Sylvester is many things. A world-renowned cheerleading coach. Owner of one of the highest-grossing athleisure brands with brick-and-mortar stores in over 17 counties plus Greenland. Founder of multiple organizations dedicated to providing resources and education on Downs Syndrome. A serial lawsuit-sender (a Sue-er, if you will). And, the title she holds in the fifth highest regard, a mother.
Of course she couldn’t put her career on hold for the nine months it took to properly cook a baby, so for most of her children she went the adoption route. Much quicker that way, although it did give her the brilliant idea to add maternity tracksuits to Sue-perStar Athleisure’s line.
Don’t get it twisted, though. Although few men have been worthy of fertilizing her award-winning uterus, Sue has had her fair share of relationships. Sure they all ended in her husbands mysteriously dying by unknown causes with her as the sole beneficiary. But the cops can’t prove anything, and she’s successfully shut down all the Reddits dedicated to the conspiracies, so mind your business.
