B-2 : Why Indians Need to Watch Frank Capra’s Movies?
If you're a fan of Old Hollywood, you can realize the significance of Frank Capra (1897-1991) in the American Film Industry. An Italian by origin, he spent 89 years in the United States. His life story was that of a "rags to riches" one - an ideal example of achieving the American Dream. He also served in the United States Army during the Second World War - and made several war documentaries. One can learn about it in the Netflix series Five Came Back - with Guillermo del Toro narrating his story. Capra has influenced many directors of the post-World War II era (from Indian directors like Satyajit Ray & Raj Kapoor to foreign directors like Akira Kurosawa, Steven Spielberg, & Francois Truffaut). But what is it that makes Capra's work evergreen?
Before I start, I wish to talk about my rendezvous with Capra. I first heard about him when he attended the 1972 Oscars to co-present the Best Director Award with Natalie Wood (to William Friedkin for The French Connection). I watched six of Capra's movies between December 2021 and July 2022. They are:
It Happened One Night (1934)
Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936)
You Can't Take It with You (1938)
Mr. Smith s Goes to Washington (1939)
Meet John Doe (1941)
It’s A Wonderful Life (1946)
Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in It Happened One Night (1934)
Raj Kapoor and Nargis in Chori Chori (1956)
I loved every single picture. While watching It Happened One Night, I found it similar to the 1956 Raj Kapoor-Nargis starrer Chori Chori (not to mention their final collaboration). The screwball comedy got remade in several Indian languages - even the 1991 movie Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin (with Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt). The key themes the movie exhibits are the class and socio-economic differences between the two lead characters - along with love, freedom, poverty, unemployment, etcetera.
It would also be interesting to know that It Happened One Night was the first of the three movies to win the "Big Five" awards at the Oscars: Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay. The other two movies are One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (1975) and Silence of The Lambs (1991).
Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936)
Claude Rains and James Stewart in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)
Mr. Deeds and Mr. Smith grabbed my attention because of the themes discussed in the two (like corruption, misuse of power, beliefs in democracy, patriotism, etcetera). The most significant element is the depiction of the ideal 'American Hero' - which one can see in Gary Cooper and James Stewart, respectively. However, the hero is something that every nation wishes to have - including ours. Mr. Deeds Goes to Town got remade in Bengali (Raja-Saja of 1960 with Uttam Kumar) and Tamil (Nallathambi of 1949 with S. Krishnan). Whereas Mr. Smith Goes to Washington did not have an Indian adaptation.
However, Mr. Smith reminded me of how the English tried to suppress such movements during the freedom struggle. Scenes like 'young boys printing newspapers and citizens launching movements to prove a man's innocence & bureaucrats and politicians trying to stop it' remind us of such events. One must remember that it got released less than three years before Gandhiji launched the Quit India movement of 1942. Even after independence, now and then, we come across news headlines featuring similar happenings.
Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck in Meet John Doe (1941)
Amitabh Bachchan and Shabana Azmi in Main Azaad Hoon (1989)
Meet John Doe is about a "grassroots" political campaign created unwittingly by a newspaper columnist with the involvement of a hired homeless man and pursued by the paper's wealthy owner. The renowned Indian adaptation of the film is the Amitabh Bachchan-Shabana Azmi starrer Main Azaad Hoon (1989). It's one of the rarest movies where Bachchan has not fought the corrupt violently.
Although John Doe survives in the end, Azaad kills himself to stay true to the words of the reporter's fictional character. Azaad could have avoided it - but he did not do it so that the people's anger and urge to fight the corrupt system never cool down. Azaad also leaves a message for his supporters and appeals that Azaad should evolve in them. Capra claimed that he never found a satisfying ending for Meet John Doe. However, Main Azaad Hoon provides a finale that suits the main character's commonality and mythic stature.
(5) Lionel Barrymore, James Stewart, Jean Arthur, and Edward Arnold in You Can’t Take It with You
And finally, You Can't Take It with You (for which he won his third Directing and second Best Picture Oscar) has a similar theme to It Happened One Night. It's a love story of a successful banker's son and his stenographer. In several Bollywood movies, we see romances between a rich boy and a poor girl (and vice versa) - but they are not like the romances between Capra's characters.
(6) Donna Reed, Stewart, and Karolyn Grimes in It’s A Wonderful Life
This article would be incomplete without talking about It's a Wonderful Life (his first movie after leaving the Army) - which gives an important lesson about the significance and beauty of human life. It teaches us that our work can impact the people we come across - and those with friends are never lonely.
But that's not all!
We live in his world. It is the "Capra Universe" - where demons of society have surrounded us - and all we need is a "hero" to fight against them. Indeed, there are various Indian movies with similar themes (and distinct from Capra's plots). However, one can the difference only after watching them. Capra has taught us that you can be a rebel or an "angry young man" - without having a gun or a weapon to fight the system and beating up the bad guys. All you must do is to believe in yourself and the moral principles of society. He gave complex social and economic problems a human face - showing unemployment and vast concentrations of economic power.
Elaborating on the themes expressed in Capra's most famous works, two of the most reoccurring subjects are selflessness and a familial sense of community. That's why there is always strong support for the lead characters.
The only difference between Capra's movies and the Indian versions is the inclusion of songs - a standard Indian Cinema formula.
With themes depicted in them and the problems we see around us, Indians must watch some of Capra's movies. There have been directors who have remade them in the Indian context (and there will be in the future, no doubt). However, they won't have the exact authenticity as those of Capra's movies.

Mainstream Representation of mental disorders
Every one of us has grown up watching movies and if I’m not wrong movies have shaped us in some or the other way. Movies play a big role in shaping an individual’s personality, sometimes people inherit a movie’s character trait subconsciously because they like it so much. Hence, it is important that movies represent the true state of mental disorders including their struggles. Indian cinema has paid attention to mental illness, at first during the 1900’s the representation for the same was quite low in number however the graph increased with the passing of time. The 2000’s and 2010’s saw a rise in movies talking and showing different mental disorders. Although, a far as observed Bollywood only represents on two ends, either very dramatic and stereotypical or very oversimplified and romanticized.
Misleading portrayal:
Movies like Koi… mil gaya and Bhool Bhulaiyaa show developmental disorder and dissociative identity disorder respectively, but they fail to give a truthful representation to both of these disorders.
In Koi... Mil Gaya (2003), Rohit, played by Hrithik Roshan, is a young man with developmental disabilities. His character is portrayed as innocent and childlike, someone who struggles to fit into a world that often overlooks or ridicules people like him. The movie subtly reinforces the idea that his life becomes valuable only after external intervention—his transformation into someone "extraordinary" thanks to Jadoo’s powers. The narrative unintentionally shifts the focus from accepting and celebrating Rohit for who he is to "fixing" him so he can fit societal norms. This oversimplifies the reality faced by people with developmental disabilities, who don’t need to be "cured" to lead meaningful, fulfilling lives.
In Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007), Vidya Balan has a dissociative identity disorder which is portrayed as supernatural possession for most of the film. Even when the psychological explanation is revealed, the damage is done as it had already implied to the audience that mental illness is scary, unpredictable, and something to be feared of and moreover something that needs to be treated by a “baba” and pooja rather than taking professional help.
Romanticized representation:
In Dear Zindagi, we meet Kiara (Alia Bhatt), a young woman who appears to have it all together but is quietly battling anxiety and depression, who after having bunch of sleepless nights decides to go to visit a therapist. This movie leaves a remarkable stamp in the Indian cinema. The film normalizes therapy, presenting it as a safe space rather than something to be ashamed of. The conversation between the two characters, one being played by Alia Bhatt and the other by Shah Rukh Khan unpacks the chaarcter’s past traumas and learns coping mechanisms, making the audience feel that healing is possible. However, the movie simplifies the process of therapy. Therapy is shown as a relatively quick journey of self-realization, where a few candid conversations lead to profound breakthroughs but in reality therapy is often a long and non-linear process. It requires patience, vulnerability, and continuous effort, with no neat conclusions. Although Dear Zindagi deserves a credit for opening a new door for the Indian audience.
A Shift:
In the era of misrepresentation came Taare Zameen Par. The movie wasn’t just showing us people with challenges or people who were diferent, it was asking us to understand them. Ishaan’s struggles with dyslexia felt painfully real for many viewers as a condition like dyslexia often went unseen and undiagnosed. Children who were often labeled as “lazy” or “difficult” felt seen and recognized. The movie didn’t just highlight a condition, it gave it a voice and reminded audiences that support and compassion could transform lives.

Udita Goswami’s birthday EXCLUSIVE: Actress-turned-DJ to throw a retro-themed bash; speaks highly of Mohit Suri’s film with YRF: “It would be better than Aashiqui 2. It’ll be the most amazing, EPIC love story ever”
Udita Goswami recently completed 20 years as an actor in the film industry – her debut film Paap celebrated its 20th anniversary on January 30. However, she’s now a full-time DJ and today, she celebrates her birthday. Bollywood Hungama spoke to her exclusively recently and she opened up about her birthday plans.
Udita Goswami excitedly told us, “I never throw any lavish birthday parties. In the last few years, we haven’t celebrated much because of COVID. But tomorrow, we are going to have a retro-themed bash! It’s going to be quite cool. Everyone is going to be dressed up in retro dresses. It could be of any era – 80s, 90s etc. Someone is dressing up as Parveen Babi while someone is going to dress up as Govinda.”
And what’s her dress going to be like? Udita replied, “I am dressing up in a simple way, as a hippie, because I am very practical in my approach. I’ll have to do a lot of running around. Hence, I am going to dress up in a casual outfit.”
Udita Goswami previously spoke about how she was never cut for films. However, she added, “One good thing happened by getting into films. I did Paap (2004) for Pooja Bhatt and because of her, I met my husband Mohit (Mohit Suri; with whom she worked in her second film, Zeher). Thanks to him, I have two beautiful children. So, the movie career led to something so magical. It shaped my life in a way I never imagined.”
Mohit Suri, too, is on a high right now. As per recent developments, he’s directing a love story for Yash Raj Films (YRF). Udita termed the project “very exciting” and also revealed, “I can tell you that it would be better than Aashiqui 2 (2013). It’ll be the most amazing, epic love story ever! The script is too good!”

SNAPSHOT.
tl;dr child gets born to a family of silver-screen god-kings on earth yet always and quite stubbornly aspires to a divinity of her own making, forging her own path despite the script she was given at birth — or, perhaps, because of the script she was given at birth aka shiv roy if she actually succeeded in going no-contact
they call your family the first family of the silver screens of india — your only claim to fame, as far as your family is concerned, for what use is royalty in a republic? you are the heroes of a modern age, and despite the thousands of years of history: that has to be enough.
you’re one out of two, meaning: when you were born, so too was your brother. never one without the other, they used to say: the prince and princess of the reigning bollywood royals, their most precious jewels, the inheritors of a legacy going on four generations. the sun sets, they say, only to rise anew… and you, my dear, were supposed to be the sunlight of a new age.
you get your first role at age six, learning lines in a language you aren’t even fluent in, making so many mistakes until the script gets changed for need of time — not that anybody complained, considering this whole project was bankrolled by your grandfather — and all you end up doing is just sitting there to look pretty. you might’ve called this your first taste of defeat, but then you remember: your brother was so bad, they didn’t even bother including him, instead telling him that his debut will be in ‘something far, far better.’
( of course, as with most everything you’ll come to experience in life: you know better than to believe in that. )
come the passing of the years comes more and more roles — and with it, a narrative that you will come to realise you didn’t much care for: someone asks you for the first time, when you are nine, how you feel about working in a film with your own mother. your dolled-up face, your pouted lips, your knit-together brows, your bared teeth in a snarl-like grin: who said this movie was about my mother?
this is the beginning. with every film you make, they ask you things that aren’t about you, but about someone else. every question they ask, you dig yourself deeper in a hole you don’t quite know you’re making — but, of course, you know better than to believe in that — until your family launches into crisis mode: enrols you in a workshop and everything, even ends up taking out a psych for you. is it something we’ve done wrong? they ask. did we make a mistake somewhere?
but of course, it doesn’t work. nothing ever does. you are who you are, and not what made you. this, your original sin; this, the very beginning of your downfall: you do not even give them the opportunity to cast you aside, instead proclaiming to them, very calmly, that you are going to quit acting and instead pursue schooling at an institute somewhere in the swiss alps.
they think it is nerves. they think that the limelight has gotten to you. happens to the best of us, they say, and you bite down on your tongue so as not to sink your teeth into their skin: you feel more wolf than daughter, more beast than woman. yet you allow them to think whatever they want to think.
( you also allow yourself to think whatever you want to think — and isn’t this story far better, one where the daughter gets all the agency, and she makes her own choices? )
but, of course, you know better than to believe in that.
the years pass, and you don’t go home, and you stay cooped up in your alpine boarding school and still it is unavoidable: they come calling eventually. they actually visit you. they tell you what were you thinking ? do you know how worried sick we were ? and you will shake your head and they will ask you what you mean. i didn’t. think of what you were thinking, i mean. in the cold, your words make frost. i didn’t think of any of you at all.
( but, of course, you know better than that, rifling through newspapers updating yourself of your brother’s career, always jealously measuring your own abandoned one to his — but it’s the stories we tell others, not the truth, that lasts. )
what were you thinking? they will ask again, in a year’s time, in two, in three — until finally you stop fielding their calls, change your address, move to a new country and pay for your tuition through your trust. why write these horrid stories? are you alright? please call back. we’re worried sick about you.
( but, of course, in your stories: they never call. or perhaps they never stop calling. perhaps one day you’ll pick up the phone, but only in your own terms. perhaps you never do. the ending is, as of yet, unwritten. )
but, of course, you know better than to believe in that.
WANTED CONNECTIONS.
if you see this, i’m still in the process of cooking em up so let us simply go w vibes for now

Why Indians Need to Watch Frank Capra’s Movies? - July 20, 2022
It’s A Wonderful Life (1946)
(1) Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in It Happened One Night
(2) Raj Kapoor and Nargis in Chori Chori
Below are the heroes of Capra:
(1) Gary Cooper in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town
(2) James Stewart in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
(3) Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck in Meet John Doe
(4) Amitabh Bachchan and Shabana Azmi in Main Azaad Hoon

Chup Review
November 27, 2022
by Inakshi Chandra-Mohanty
Many films have been made on the film industry. Films that show the intricacies of the process through the eyes of an artist integrated within it. But few have shed light on the tumultuous relationship between a filmmaker and a film critic. The two professions are constantly at loggerheads. It’s a never-ending battle due to the refusal of each to understand the job of the other. Chup uses a fictional tale of a serial killer that targets film critics to comment on the filmmaker-critic relation. This psychological thriller relies less on suspense and more on the interesting characters and passionate story that attempts to burn bridges between the opposing professions.
The strongest aspect of Chup is the intrigue. The buildup of how these four characters and two parallel stories will converge. And the way in which the contrasting elements of the multiple narratives lead to an exhilarating climax. This is further enhanced by its passion for the art of cinema. Writer-Director R. Balki made this film out of a pure love for the process of filmmaking. It is an ode to classic cinema with many references to the art behind old school romance. It specifically pays homage to Guru Dutt and his classic film, Kaagaz Ke Phool, and focuses on the relevance of that film in the filmmaker-critic debate.
Though the film is a multi-starrer, Dulquer Salmaan is the star of the show. Elaborating on the details of his performance would reveal too much of the mystery, but his ability to transfer between the different shades of his character is brilliant. While the remaining actors do well in their respective roles, much of the film’s impact rests on his shoulders.
Where Chup falters, is in its investigative suspense. While the police chase of this brutal criminal is smart, the characters pursuing the case have barely any background or emotional depth. Despite having considerable screen space, Sunny Deol has little to do in the film. Though he and Pooja Bhatt do well in the roles written, they have little impact due to the lack of characterization. Their characters are nothing more than props in the investigation.
Despite these minimal flaws, Chup stands out due to the themes it explores, albeit in a jumbled state.
It is natural for a filmmaker to feel disheartened on reading a scathing review. However, it is also important all types of reviews to exist. Otherwise, there will never be a standard for good cinema, filmmakers will be stuck in the land of mediocrity and no one will aspire for any better.
As a filmmaker and a film critic, someone who has seen both the blood and sweat that goes into the simplest details in a scene and someone who has watched countless films forming strong opinions on them, this divide is something I have witnessed myself. This is a battle I am constantly fighting within. That is why Chup resonates so deeply with me. It is a confused film, one which mirrors my constant confusion between the two worlds. Chup is the product of an artist and a critic, one that cannot differentiate between the two. That’s why the messaging of Chup is so muddled. Because on one hand it puts out valid points in the defense of film criticism and on the other hand romanticizes the life of an artist engulfed by the world of cinema and pained by the words of critics.
Through its confused state, it is not clear whether Chup has a defined message. The struggle between art and criticism will continue to remain. But somewhere in the midst of all the craziness, there is a sense of peace. A calm that sets in only on the union of the critic and the artist. Chup is at its best when the two are together, making their monotonous moments come to life with their common passion for cinema. And that may be the message that the filmmakers strive to convey. That just like Chup reaches its highest peak through the bonding of the critic and the artist, cinema will reach greater heights through a combined effort. Both the critic and the artist are necessary to make great cinema, and neither works without the other.
