There are significant differences in how much people are exposed to air pollution, according to a new study co-authored by MIT scholars that takes daily mobility into account.
The study, based in the Bronx, New York, does not just estimate air pollution exposure based on where people live or work, but uses mobile data to examine where people go during a typical day, building a more thorough assessment of the environment’s impact on them.
The research finds exposure to particulate matter 2.5 microns or bigger rises by about 2.4 percent when daily travel patterns are taken into account.
“One of the main strengths of the study is that we try to improve the information we use, on the air quality side and also from the fine-grained estimation of people’s mobility,” says Paolo Santi, a principal research scientist at Senseable City Lab, part of MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP), and a co-author of a new paper detailing the study’s results. “That allows us to build trajectories of people’s movement. So, it was the first time we were able to combine these data to come up with a new measure of exposure.”
After all, people’s daily pollution exposure may be a complex combination of either living near, working near, or traveling by sources of particulate matter.
“People move around the city for jobs and education and more, and studying that is where we get this better information about exposure,” says An Wang of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, another co-author of the study.
The paper, “Big mobility data reveals hyperlocal air pollution exposure disparities,” is published today in Nature Cities.
The authors are Iacopo Testi of the Senseable City Lab; An Wang of Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Sanjana Paul, a graduate student in DUSP; Simone Mora, of the Senseable City Lab; Erica Walker, an associate professor at the Brown University School of Public Health; Marguerite Nyhan, a senior lecturer/associate professor at the National University of Ireland, University College Cork; Fábio Duarte of the Senseable City Lab; Santi; and Carlo Ratti, director of the Senseable City Lab.
To conduct the study, the researchers collected air pollution by mounting solar-power environmental sensors, including optical particle counters, temperature and humidity sensors, and GPS, on New York City’s civic services vehicles in operation in the Bronx.
“This strategy shows that cities can use their existing fleet as environmental sensors,” says Mora.
To measure how people moving through the Bronx are exposed to pollution in different times, the researchers used anonymized phone records of 500,000 different individuals and 500 million daily location records in New York.
The ground-level pollution data showed that the southeastern portion of the Bronx, where expressways and industries meet most intensively, has the most particulate matter.
The mobility data also revealed disparities in exposure when evaluated in terms of demographics, with income disparities present but disparities by ethnicity larger. For instance, some largely Hispanic communities have among the highest exposure levels. But the data also showed large differences in exposure levels within Hispanic communities.
Pollution exposure has significant implications from a health perspective, as Duarte notes. For instance, the Bronx has the worst air quality of any New York City borough, and, in turn, cases of asthma in the Bronx are 2.5 times higher in than any other borough.
“You see the consequences of exposure to pollution in the hospitalization of adults in the Bronx,” Duarte says.
As the researchers acknowledge, because the study was conducted in the fall of 2021, when the global Covid-19 pandemic was still affecting business and commuting, there may be slightly different mobility patterns in the Bronx today. Still, they believe their methods can give rise to additional future studies of the pollution exposure.
Ratti notes that mobile data, including pollution sensors on vehicles, can be used as “a huge monitoring system. It’s not expensive, we have the infrastructure in terms of cars and buses, and just putting sensors on them, you can have better air quality monitoring.”
And Wang notes that granular studies such as this one can be extended into studies that add in additional kinds of air-quality hazards, in addition to PM 2.5 particles.
“This actually opens the door for new analysis for many kinds of toxicity studies combined with exposure,” he says.
The study was supported by the MIT Senseable City Lab Consortium.

Flatiron Denver - Where I came from, Why I Came Here, and What I Think About It
Where I Came From
Who are you, anyways, Aaron Burmeister? Before coming to join Flatiron in Denver, I led a pretty unfulfilling professional life in Ellsworth, Maine. After graduating from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Biochemistry/Biophysics, I returned to my old stomping grounds with 2 goals in mind: A) Get a job at the local laboratory, The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, utilizing my shiny new degree and B) pay off my student loans. And I managed to do both of those over the next 5 years. I managed to get a job working at the Transgenic Genotyping Services group at the laboratory. They are in charge of validating a lot of the mice produced by the lab for use in research laboratories around the world. We make sure those mice have the mutations we are trying to cure. After several years, however, it became increasingly apparent that there wasn’t much vertical movement to be made - many of the better paying positions required Master’s or, more often, Doctoral degrees. However, I stayed in order to pay off my student loans because the money was good and I could live on my parents property for minimal cost. In addition, I started working on a Master’s in Bioinformatics at UMaine (as well as working my job). 
In early 2019, my girlfriend got accepted to a PhD program in Lincoln, Nebraska, and wanted to move in with me. Seeing as I had just paid off my debt, I agreed. At this point I had become somewhat disillusioned with biology. My career path would have required me to get a doctoral degree and work as a post-doc - something which I had no particular interest in. However, something I did have interest in was programming. Courses taken in the past and present drove me more and more into coding. I’ve always enjoyed using computers. Thus I started looking into ways to become a programmer without necessarily heading back to a 4-year college.

Why I Came Here
I asked my cousin, who at the time was in charge of hiring new programmers and software developers for startups in NYC, for advice on which bootcamps seemed to actually deliver capable candidates. She sent me a list of a few: App Academy, Flatiron, and I can’t remember the rest. I looked up all the schools and had a few criteria for deciding: A) I value my work-life balance. I heard and read about people who went to AppAcademy work 100+ hour weeks. I thought that was insane. I’d rather take a longer boot camp that gave me time to recharge. B) I was interested in programs that offered an Income Sharing Agreement because I was running low on funds. I also felt like schools that offered these might be a bit more invested in helping me to get a job afterwards. C) I was interested in a campus relatively close to Lincoln, NE. Flatiron was the only one on the list that had one in Denver. 
These were my primary motivators to apply to Flatiron, and only Flatiron. I had no idea what the culture would be like, the instructors, or anything like that, but I did know that I wanted to learn how to be a good programmer and I would give it my all. Little did I know.

What I Think About It
Now I am here, in Denver, having just finished my 3rd week at Flatiron. Here’s what I think and why:
The Culture - The culture has been kind of hard to describe, honestly. It almost feels a little surreal sometimes. It’s like a bunch of millennials got together and said “What if we took all the bad stuff out of school? What if we took all the bad stuff out of culture?”. Everybody seems to genuinely care about each other here, respect each other, and foster a learning environment. We aren’t just lectured at, but interacted with. Students are encouraged to teach other students, instructors come by just to say hi and see what you are working on. It’s honestly like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. And I’ve got to say - it feels amazingly refreshing. It makes wonder why the entire world isn’t like this. It just makes so much sense. We are encouraged to share our feelings with each other WITHOUT inviting comments from others. We’re encouraged to take risks, and fail sometimes. It’s okay to fail. Nobody is perfect.
The Curriculum - I can only speak to the first 3 weeks here, but we’ve basically covered the basics of Ruby programming during this time. Week 1 of the mod we have classes to help us to understand what we’re doing. The best part is, if you are having trouble with a particular concept, you can request a lesson on it. The staff will either host one that same day, or the next. What if you’re the only one? You can get a one-on-one session with an instructor. Week 2 is the week of the Coding Challenge. During this week we take a test of Flatiron’s design to test our knowledge gathered during the previous week. The best part is, you can take it up to 4 times. You can go in, realize you need to brush up on a particular concept, study that night, come in the next day, and totally nail the challenge. It takes the edge off compared to an exam in school, where you only have one shot (not to mention a lot of times tests can vary wildly in style between professors). Week 3 is Project week. This is the week where you either work by yourself (in the latter half of the boot camp) or you work with a partner to bring a project of your own design to fruition. I’ll give a little detail on my first project week below. At the end of the week, you present your projects in front of the entire boot camp. That’s it. There are no visible grades to stress over. Once again, very refreshing.
The Instructors - This is the highlight that I was not expecting when I came here. All the instructors care about you. They walk by, engage you in conversation, help you to improve your projects, and want you to succeed. It is obvious by how they speak that they care about the students and that they treat it more than just a job. They are all very friendly and approachable to boot. The respect they give us reflects the values of Flatiron. Nobody is haughty or in an ivory tower. Many of them were in past cohorts not a year before. What results is a very friendly, welcoming atmosphere. I can’t say enough good things about the instructors here.

Mod 1 Project Week
I just wanted to touch on this briefly. This was perhaps the best group project I’ve ever experienced, and I think that the culture of Flatiron helped to facilitate that. We had a three person group, and despite the increased logistics that demands, our project went as smooth as butter. Our communication was excellent (we all agreed on rules for the group as far as staying late, how to communicate with each other). I think we all felt like we made a significant impact on the final project. One member had to leave partway through the week - we still managed to cobble together a Zoom meeting to make a required video and give the travelling member parts to work on. Another member was having trouble understanding the code we had written so far, so the other two took several hours to stop all work on the project and make sure the third understood why we coded what we did. And it was well worth it.
I just wanted to highlight this experience because it is fairly unique (at least for me). Usually groups have one person who coasts, one who does all the work, etc. I thought it was fairly notable that our group was not like that.
At any rate I’ve rambled enough for one blog post. Future posts I make will be more technical in nature - perhaps performing a deep dive into a subject or discussing some code from a project. Thanks for reading!

Increasing Trend Of Examination Misconduct - Nigeria Case Study
The debate on skills versus certificates grades has been an issue in Nigeria sociological research. The effects of focus on the grades did not only affect the employability of the students (graduates) in Nigeria but also the opportunity to study outside the country in better universities across the globe. This has evolved into a situation where the future of our children looks blink because some children, through the help of their parents and schools, want to have an unfair advantage over others.
A case study of this happened in May 2019, an entrance examination was conducted for candidates who are seeking admission into 104 Unity schools in Nigeria. However, a good number of parents were not satisfied with how the examination went. It was claimed that the test was marred with widespread malpractice.
A close parent attests to the fact that parents and guardians paid huge amount of money to bribe some principals and teachers for their children to be offered admission.
Although the Federal Government has enacted laws to curb this menace and even stipulate four-year-jail term for anyone found guilty of it. In 2016, the Federal ministry of education blacklisted some secondary schools as centers from conducting an examination, but it has not yielded many results.
The reason why this social anomaly is on the rise is because of the high premium we have placed on certificate more than skills or the ability of our children.
Prof Malami Umar Tambawal also looked at this anomaly hitting deep into the education system of Nigeria, and he suggested that there should be a reform in the educational policy which should give room for skills and professional competence and a need to do away with undue emphasis on certificates.
Blessing Adegoke conducted research and in her work which was carried out in five secondary schools in Mushin Local Government in Lagos showed that undue emphasis had been laid on a certificate. Also, parental pressure for good grade contributed to the rise in examination misconduct in the country.
It has even become the norm in most of our Universities, the 132 Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education in the country. Most students see it as a normal thing to do or a way of helping one another.
Recently, Bayero University Kano expels 63 students and rusticates 13 others for their various involvements in examination misconduct.
John Simons, Executive Dean, Faculty of Arts, Macquarie University in his article titled “Why we should abolish the university exam” stated that
“Most experienced university lecturers would agree that there seems to be more plagiarism around than there used to be. Whether this is because of improved detection via software like Turnitin or more malpractice is hard to tell, probably a bit of both.”
The political class in the country is making matter worse because of their engagement in different electoral malpractice, fraud, and election cheat. These are the kind of environment our children have been exposed to, which then give them gut also to exhibit similar character in schools.
Until stakeholders in education, parents, guardians, teachers, and Federal Government collectively fight against malpractice to a logical conclusion, we may not see any positive turnaround to this problem.
It has even been discussed that “the nation stands the risk of being underdeveloped when its youths reject the honor of getting a sound education and prefer to opt for illegal activities and deceptive via cheating during exams.
The role of Parents to help stop the menace
One of the causes of exam malpractice as mentioned above, is the pressure and unhealthy expectations parents put on their children. In most cases, pressure makes children do all manner of illegal things to feed their parents’ ego. However, it doesn’t mean parents shouldn’t encourage their children to succeed or have a realistic expectation on them.
But making them look stupid whenever they perform poorly in an exam is something you shouldn’t do as a parent. Failure in an exam only points to the fact that your child needs help in the subject he/she has failed. The courage to rise against failure is what you should imbibe in them.
Parents should also establish a parent-teacher relationship to monitor their child’s academic progress. This kind of relationship will help to detect early the subject (s) the child is lagging behind and help the teacher to know the approach to use to help the child.

I am Jocelyn Florentino-Remigio, 41 years old. I received the Holy Blessing in August 25, 1995 to a Filipino brother. We have four (4) blessed children. I was raised up from a Protestant family who started the foundation of the United Methodist Church in our barangay. I grew up in a family practicing a lifestyle of attending God as we begin the day (morning devotion) and close the day through reporting and prayer. I came from a humble, simple, God loving family. My parents dream for me is to become a Deaconess of our church in service to God and our congregation. I am the eldest child, at the age of ten, my mother went to the spirit world and since then I felt responsible of my younger siblings.
One semestral vacation (October 1987), my cousin Mr. Isaias M. Florentino invited me to attend a 4 days Divine Principle seminar and martial arts training held at UM center in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija, Philippines. I was inspired to mingle with brothers and sisters of different faith/belief but what captured me the most was the ideals of the Principle and 2nd Coming of the Messiah, the True Parents of humanity whom I have accepted, Rev. and Mrs. Sun Myung Moon.
After the seminar, I went back home and shared the Divine Principle especially to my grandparents, my father and my siblings. Since I passed the entrance examination and scholarship in Central Luzon Polytechnic College (now Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology), a school near our student home, I felt this is God's way of providing me the opportunity to deepen my understanding of the Divine Principle and be trained in fulfilling my portion of responsibility in attending the True Parents
I became a student fulltime at our PCARP student home, I led PCARP organization in my school and rose up committed members and majority of them got blessed in 1992 and 1995. When I learned how to lecture the Divine Principle I was very determined to testify Divine Principle and True Parents to my father (layman of our church at that time) yet I ended up being persecuted when he read Christology. He started persecuting me in joining the movement.
In December 1990, three months before my graduation, my church leader, Mrs. Joy Pagaran-Theriot asked me to stop studies to join the Philippine Commando fundraising team, though it's hard for me to stop my love for God and True Parents and my country drove me to decide and the strongest persecution from my father took place because I stopped my schooling. Since I join the Commando fundraising throughout Philippines and Asia for three years, I determined and sincerely focused in my mission even without communicating with my father.
I went back schooling and reached out my family, surprisingly my father's attitude towards me and the church became positive and joined the movement. I graduated and passed the teachers board examination and my whole family (my parents, my brother and sister were both blessed to Philippines) received the blessing in 1995. I went through Unification Church center fulltime life as CARP coordinator, Won Hwa-Do and Tong-il Moo Do instructor, mother figure, accountant, lecturer, church center leader, regional leader, UMHQ secretary and UM Northeastern Luzon Executive Director.
Since I joined the church for twenty-four years, I worked as a frontliner, even in times that I am pregnant with my four children, I am straight forward in fulfilling God's will. As a frontliner, whatever challenges that I encountered I never give up my faith and conviction to fulfill my responsibility and contribute to God's providence. My latest church public mission was as Executive Director of Northeastern Luzon and Regional Leader of Central Luzon based in Cabanatuan City (May 2005-2010 January).
In 2008, for the 2nd GPF celebration, our region successfully conducted a provincial level GPF in partnership with the Department of Education, city government and provincial government.
As a result, 150 educators from the Department of Education who were inspired with the vision One Family under God and with the effectivity and efficiency of the character- based education and service –learning education program in 18 pilot schools (elementary and high school) in Nueva Ecija decided to join the Global Peace Convention in December 2009.
However, the Continental Director of Asia, Dr. Chung Sik Yong, announced that True Parents gave direction not to support GPC and Dr. Hyun Jin Moon.
I even tried conveying to the Division Supervisor that Father Moon doesn't want Ambassadors for Peace to support GPC.
However as the head of the delegation she told me that their participation to GPC will be as partners in making Philippines as a nation of character and peace as a public servant.
They want to learn best practice from leaders abroad and wanted to spread our CBE and SLE program to be adopted by other leaders.
As their local partners, I was asked to lead other group of participants to go to GPC, however, Unification Church leaders said I disobeyed True Parents and even blamed that I am the second signatory in blacklisting Dr. Yong which is not true at all.
During the 1st National Leaders meeting in January 2010, Mr. Jimmy Vergara explained that GPF was not founded by True Father therefore it is not an umbrella organization of Unification Movement that's why those brothers and sisters who joined the GPC are not aligned to True Parents.
The new national leader of Philippines Mr. Rolando Basuil, Jr. announced publicly that all leaders who supported Hyun Jin Nim and attended GPC must tender their resignation.
I explained to the new national leader that as a Blessed Central Family and extended member of True Family, I have a noble mission which is given by God and True Parents to serve for God's providence, no one would be able to find any reason to kick me out of the public mission which is given by God. I can work for both the church and GPF but he insisted that Dr. Yong said I need to leave Hyun Jin Nim so that he will become weak and will go back to True Parents but if you will continue you should resign and Dr. Yong told him that he will appoint new leader in my church.
Michael Zablan, our national leader for 17 years was not given a chance to speak before leaders at that time.
Towards the end of that national leaders meeting Unification Church Philippines top leaders called for a closed-door meeting with all leaders who attended the GPC 2009 and it was decided and agreed that GPF will be an NGO partner working for CIG Philippines wherein Mr. Zablan will report result of GPF to the national leader however this agreement was not substantialized because this meeting was reported to Dr. Yong, he didn't want reconciliation among Filipino Unification Church and GPF members.
One Sunday in May 2010 Mr. Jimmy Vergara didn't allow us to enter the Unification Church headquarters and during the visit of Rev. Hyung Jin Moon (August 2010) at the meeting of Dr. Walsh with Ambassadors for Peace supporting GPF, Mr. Vergara confessed that it was Dr. Yong who gave the direction not to allow GPF members to enter headquarters.
When Mr. Jin Man Kwak and Mr. Young-jun Kim visited Philippines, another instance that we were not allowed to enter headquarters Sunday Service but during the Day of All True Things 2010 we went to headquarters early (preparation is not yet finished), leaders were shocked of our presence and they were not even recognized, it was our elder second generation who approached and greeted our Filipino leaders.
Last July 1 holy day we are set to do our pledge in headquarters but GPYC members from Caloocan went early but headquarters was closed and fully guarded so we decided to do our pledge in our respective dormitories.
After we were remove as Cabanatuan Church leader, Unification Church Council (UCC) Nueva Ecija was formed and their first project was how to remove my husband from managing the rice farm of the church. My husband initiated utilizing the Sta. Rosa farm (abandoned for a decade) to support rice for the headquarters and our local church without the financial support of Unification Church. A lot of investment was made even there was no return of investment yet but he was served to sign a contract for one year only. We were terminated and discriminated by the current Philippine leadership, however, we continuously fulfill our tradition of attending Sunday Service, tithing/donation and 2nd generation seminars in our local area.
On March 20, 2011, my family and 5 GPYC members attended Sunday Service in Cabanatuan City Church and during the news and announcement, Mrs. Jacy Manabat, wife of Cabanatuan Church leader Mr. Wenceslao Manabat, announced that there is ongoing unified service in headquarters and she received a direction from Dr. Yong, Asia Continental Director and Mr. Jun Basuil, national leader based on True Parents direction that Eric and Joy Remigio's family and all GPYC members are no longer Unification Church members and not allowed to enter the church premises.
You must finish 40 days repentance seminar in Chung Pyung before you can come back to the Unification Church.
I immediately stood up and spoke that you abuse True Father's name, personally I don't believed that Father's desire is to ex-communicate members. This is your decision, you must be accountable of this. You can take away my membership in the Unification Church but as a Blessed Family and extended member of True Family, we must be owners, you can't take away my love and commitment to True Parents and you can't stop me in taking responsibility. I demanded for a copy of the memo regarding my excommunication but she said it's not with her.
Honestly speaking, this decision is too hard for me to accept, especially for my family. I really feel this is not fair and just. My eldest daughter who is 9 years old only commented that uncle Hyun Jin is True Parents son; therefore we must support him if we love True Parents more than Dr. Yong. True Parents is parent of all not only in the center. I feel very painful when I and my family have to be treated in this way by the church leaders/members because this is not the way of true love which is God's, True Parents' and our movement's tradition. The church leadership should not treat my family this way because this is a great violation to human rights.
Last April 7, Mrs. Jacy Manabat came to our apartment and met my sister-in-law. She shared that a direction changed already since Dr. Yong and Michael Zablan reconciled already during the funeral of one UMHQ staff. She also explained that she only follow her leaders direction. She mentioned that the reason why she announced that we are not Unification Church members anymore and not allowed to attend Sunday Service and can't enter the church center was because I distributed the Global Peace Newsletter after Sunday Service and one elder member reported to the national leader and later on Dr. Yong and the national leader gave such direction. On April 9, the church leader Mr. Wency Manabat came to our apartment together with his children and we met. He said he came to let her 2nd child know our place and secondly to encourage me that we must continue attending Sunday Service because the direction changed already. I told him that the damage has been done, your wife publicly announced that we are not Unification Church members anymore therefore you should publicly announce clearing our names to the public.
It is so painful experience but I need to digest it with the power of love by living for the greater good. As a blessed family we will take ownership in supporting God's providence and True Parents timetable for a substantial Cheon Il Guk.
