Okay but what the hell did they mean by "ancient emperor or king" and "they could build with technology only slightly out of their reach"?!!?
What did they mean by ancient? No idea, of course they don't specify. Let's say they mean classical antiquity or before (yes that is eurocentric. It is more familiar to most people reading this so it will set things into context better).
The romans were the first to build glass windows starting in the 1st century CE by fitting smaller glass pieces into frames. (Until the industrial revolution, this was the only way to make glass windows.) This means that for most of the time period we're considering, people would not even know where to begin to make such a thing. Okay, what about the imperial period romans? Glass pieces fitted into a frame are not strong under pressure. As far as I found out in my research, the romans even used wooden frames rather than later medieval lead frames, so holding up to multiple meters of water above is right out of the question if you want any kind of visibility. Even just the sheer amount of glass would be ridiculously expensive! The romans didn't even have clear glass until 100 CE!
Even if they could by some miracle build a continuous tube of clear glass (they really could not), it would not hold up under the pressure of meters of water above it. Shark tunnels are built of acrylic glass, polymethyl methacrylate, which was invented in 1928. "technology only slightly out of their reach" my ass.
if i had a time machine and i wanted to absolutely destroy an ancient emperor or king, i would take them to the shark tunnel of an aquarium. giving them an ozymandias view of their legacy would do nothing, they can see that all empires rot just by looking around them. but the shark tunnel of an aquarium is something they haven’t seen before, something no one has seen before, something magnificent that they could build with technology only slightly out of their reach. they would bankrupt their nation trying to recreate that shark tunnel for themself. their dynasty would collapse within three generations, and, if heaven is on my side, they themself will be eaten by a shark to the delight of generations of historians to come
