Inquiry 1 Blog Post
For my first inquiry I decided to use a matrix of personal history and social outreach/engagement. I decided to use my personal history of the fact that I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) back in 2016. PCOS is a female hormonal imbalance that has many symptoms. 70% of women who have PCOS have not been properly diagnosed, including myself. I was diagnosed in 2016 but started noticing the symptoms about a year or two prior. I have come to accept the fact that I have PCOS and have changed my lifestyle, diet, and exercise routine in order to help with the severity of these symptoms. I wanted to promote this as a way to bring awareness to others as it occurs to 1 in every 15 people, however, not many people know of this disease. In order for it easily accessible to everyone, I decided to create an Instagram story that could potentially be posted to organization or campaigns pages. I did not want to do a brochure as you would really only find that in a doctor’s office, and you would only be aware of PCOS if you had it as you have to go to a specialist and an endocrinologist. I first started out by drawing and sketching out the ribbon. I knew that I wanted the ribbon to be incorporated into or as the ‘O’ in PCOS. The ribbon is a teal color as the awareness ribbon color for PCOS is teal. I wanted the ribbon to have some dimension and not be flat, so I added and played around with different gradients. I then started sketching out my ideas for the icons to represent the symptoms. The icons needed to be simple and easily interpreted so any viewer that came across it was able to recognize and understand the symptom. Since the list of symptoms is long, I cut it down to the major symptoms that occur in most females with PCOS. I decided to go with a nice bold display type along with a lighter weight body copy in order to improve and insure legibility. My next step was the layout of each slide of the story and creating the icons for the statistics page. I then went into illustrator and started designing and laying out my work on the computer. Once I got everything where I wanted to, I brought it into photoshop in order to create the mockup of it being shown on the phone as if it was a real infographic.

“Pain, you just have to fight through, because the truth is you can’t outrun it and life always makes more.” -Dr. Meredith Grey
With the month of September right around the corner, I wanted to post about something important to me. I’ve posted about it a couple of times before, and that’s PCOS. You can read those posts here and here.
For those who don’t know what it is or want to learn more about it, I will be making weekly posts about it. September is PCOS Awareness Month and I think what better way to bring awareness is…

Tough Girls Wear Teal: A Decade-Long Journey with PCOS - To Kiss a Stranger (on Wattpad) http://my.w.tt/UiNb/jRlULjQRkG Starting with a diagnosis of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome at the age of thirteen, Ren struggled through several years of chronic pain, underwent a hysterectomy at the age of 21, and worked for several more years to restore her physical, mental, and emotional health. This series of short personal essays takes the reader through Ren's journey with PCOS as she slowly worked toward a pain-free, beautiful life. 10% of all women are impacted by PCOS, but the condition continues to be underrepresented in areas of medical and public education and awareness. September is #PCOSAwareness month when tough girls proudly wear the teal #PCOS #Awareness ribbon. As more women speak up and speak out, they offer hope to others for healing, understanding, and a brighter future.
