This, one hundred percent. You can turn a lot of things into résumé experience if you can talk about a process or learning curve as part of them. It's best to try and find an aspect of the experience that fits what you're applying for, but you've likely got more leeway than you realize.
Lots of platforms can count as blogging, for instance, at least if you post. Are you active enough on Tumblr that you can talk about data analytics, what gets traffic and what doesn't? Do you know the quirks of the site in a way that you can explain or demonstrate that a brand or businessperson could use to improve their postings? That can be cited as social media/blogging experience.
Do you cook for friends and family events? Did you learn new cooking techniques to try new things, and can you talk about chemistry or processes beyond a layperson's understanding? Are you invited back for volunteer events that you cook for? The first is growth in a skill, and the second can be a professional reference if they're willing to go on record about your punctuality and dependability or attention to detail such as dietary or religious restrictions.
Do you write? If so, and you are publishing it somewhere, being able to talk about the pros and cons of different platforms is work-related research. Being able to compare and contrast Wattpad, Amazon, and Radish and which platform you should go with given TOS, compensation, and culture is a marketable skill depending on industry and at least counts as being able to parse complex ideas. Are you a beta reader for someone who publishes on Archive Of Their Own, or do you participate in fic exchanges? Congrats, you've got a claim to being a freelance editor or writer as well as being able to navigate various software platforms.

The key is being able to demonstrate knowledge and growth in a field and find what could be useful to other endeavors, plus be able to discuss it in email or interview if people probe further or ask for examples. Not all jobs or employers will accept freelance or self-employed experience, especially if it's not directly related to a particular role, but I promise it's at least worth a try to put it together and present it as a comprehensive skillset.
Applying for jobs is a hell designed specifically to torment autistic people. Here is a well-paying task which you know in your heart and soul if they just gave you a desk and left you alone and allowed you to do it you would sit there and be more focused and enthusiastic and excellent at it than anyone else in the building. However, before they allow you to perform the task, you must pass through 3-4 opaque social crucibles where you must wear uncomfortable clothes and make eye contact while everyone expects you to lie, but not too much (no one is ever clear exactly how much lying is expected, “over” honesty is however penalized). You are being judged almost entirely on how well you understand these very specific and unclear rules that no one has explained. None of this has anything to do with your ability to perform the desired task.

Hoshidan Festival: Opening
I’m...pretty sure we haven’t done this yet? Kiyoshi asked me to do the opening scenes ages ago, but I had to work on it slowly because I was busy. Now I finally finished the one for the Hoshidan festival! It’s not all that long, but sitting down and getting it done was difficult.
I’m still trying to get a little crochet business off the ground, and have now moved (temporarily) cross-country to stay with my brother who is more able to help me with that. (He’a also encouraging me to brush up on my skills and promote myself as a freelance translator and writer/editor, so....we’ll see... The mere *thought* of all this exhausts me, lol.) I had to leave my computer behind when I moved, but my bro bought me a laptop! He’s awesome! His place needs a lot of cleaning, though, and I’m slowly getting it done... I have a really nice desk here, much nicer than what I have at home, so it’s easier to work on the computer.
At any rate, get ready for Anna (the merchant) to do a lot of fourth-wall breaking, because that’s what she’s here for, right? These are technically two conversations, but they occur back-to-back, so I put ‘em together. Next up: the Nohrian festival opening! (Aiming to get that one up next week.)
(Opening Scene) This features a female Corrin, but the dialogue is pretty much the same if Corrin is male. The only notable changes would be that Felicia would replace Jakob, and Corrin’s title would be “Lord” rather than “Lady.”
Corrin: “Hmmm...? What is this place...?”
Merchant: “Hello there! Welcome to this Outrealm's Hoshidan Festival!”
Corrin: “...Huh? Outrealm? Hoshidan Festival?”
Merchant: “That's right! This is the grand annual festival you've all been waiting for! Go and spend lots of money! ...I mean, go and enjoy yourselves to the full!! Corrin: “Oh, well... Actually, you see...”
Merchant: “Oh? Wait. Did you, perchance, arrive here on accident? That happens every once in a while. Is this place really THAT complicated? Well, whatever. Let me explain explain things for our foreign visitors. This is an Outrealm. It's a world different from the one you're from. ...And it just happens to look a lot like Hoshido.”
Corrin: “...I see.”
Merchant: “Today we're holding a festival where people make wishes for the health and growth of their children. If any in your group have children, it would be nice for them to join in. Of course, there are many stalls around here, too. You can have lots of fun eating goodies and hanging out with us!”
Corrin: “Oh my! It really does sound like fun! Since we're already here, I suppose we could participate.”
Merchant: “Thanks! So then, I'll show you around. First let's go this way...”
Jakob: “We have a problem!” (T/N: Jakob will be replaced by Felicia if Corrin is male.)
Corrin: “What's wrong, Jakob?”
Jakob: “It appears as though the festival is under attack from brigands...!”
Corrin: “Are you serious!?”
Merchant: “Whaaat!? And on a day like this!? I need to get everyone out of here! You too, hurry and find a safe place...”
Corrin: “No, please, allow us to fight.”
Merchant: “What...?”
Corrin: “You've put so much effort into this festival, right? I want everyone to enjoy it. And... I've had my fill of seeing festivals destroyed...”
Jakob: “! Lady Corrin...”
Merchant: “...Lady Corrin? Is that your name?”
Corrin: “Yes, it is. I'm sorry I didn't introduce myself sooner. My name is Corrin. I'm commanding an army in another world. We're accustomed to fighting, so I'm sure these brigands will be no problem for us.”
Merchant: “W-W-WOW!! I'm in the company of Lady Corrin and her army!? You should have said so earlier!!”
Corrin: “Pardon me? You know about us?”
Merchant: “Of course I do! I've heard rumors about you. I've even thought about sending you a formal invitation to come here. However, for some reason the descriptions of you vary in all of the rumors, so... You may not know it yourselves, but you're quite famous in this world. Recently we even held a popularity poll.” (T/N: She's talking about the description of Corrin's appearance. Since Corrin is customizable, each Corrin would probably look a little different! ...And be a different gender, too.)
Corrin: “A...popularity poll...?”
Merchant: “And I went ahead and made kimonos to suit the image of each of the poll winners.”
Corrin: “Kimonos? Like the one you're wearing?”
Merchant: “That's right. Should one of the winners wear one, I can then sell it at a much higher price... I mean, everyone would love it! So be sure to try them on later.”
Corrin: “I-I see. Understood. We'll be off to fight, then.”
(Corrin leaves.)
Merchant: “Thanks. I'll guide the other visitors to safety....... I never imagined that Lady Corrin and her company would come here of their own accord! It's too bad that brigands came, but... What amazing luck! Anyway, I need to prepare those kimonos, and hurry over to the shrine! I've got the kimonos for the poll winners, and...a couple of special extras...”
(Battle Begins)
Corrin: “Wow... So these are the festival grounds? There really are a lot of stalls to visit... Once the fight is done, I'd like everyone to relax here. This time for sure, I'll protect the festival from--”
Merchant: “Helloooo! This is the merchant!! Can everyone hear me!?”
Corrin: “Wh-what's with that voice!? Where in the world is it coming from!?”
Merchant: “Oh, did I startle you? I'm sorry. This is a new item from us Anna merchants: a magical tool that amplifies our voice. When I use this, everyone on the festival grounds can hear me, so... It's useful for explaining attractions, making announcements about lost children, things like that. By the way, my voice is coming through those magic devices over there*.” (T/N: This simple little phrase gave me more trouble than most in this conversation, lol. I don't know why. She's clearly referring to speakers and a PA system.)
Corrin: “Th-that seems very useful... I wish I had that in my castle. Anyway, why did you get our attention using that special spell?”
Merchant: “About that. Remember that I told you about the popularity poll we had in this world? Well, I have something special prepared for the four children who placed highest in that poll!”
Corrin: “Those who placed highest in that poll...?”
Merchant: “Simply put, it means that they're liked by a lot of people! Those who won should think of this as an honor. Although... Depending on the route you chose and other circumstances, it's possible that some of the winners may not exist... But we'll cross that bridge if we come to it.
Anyway, allow me to announce the winners! First, the child-generation males who placed highest in the poll are...

Content Marketing All-Stars Q&A: Forrest Dylan Bryant of Evernote
Is it possible for a brand to succeed at scale with new content marketing tactics?

So, what's the secret to Evernote's success? How does the firm approach content creation and content strategy?
To find out, we recently chatted with Forrest Dylan Bryant, the company's Director of Marketing Content.

Q: What is your background and what is Evernote?
A: Evernote is a place where you can capture, organize, and share your thoughts and ideas. You can keep all of your notes and docs in one place, so you never have to worry about where they are. Your thoughts are always with you, always accessible, and always in sync, via desktop, mobile, and the web. We have more than 200 million users around the world, so our content reaches a pretty broad audience.
I lead a team of writers, and I’m first and foremost a writer myself. But I’ve worked a lot of different sides of the content landscape over the years, from marketing to strategy to CMS management, for big corporations and startups and nonprofits. I also have a background in book publishing, I’ve written novels, been a music journalist, and I’ve spent nearly two decades in community radio. So I guess I take a big-picture view of content.
Q: What role does digital content play for Evernote? Why are you creating it?
A: I’m so glad you asked me that question, because that’s the question all content marketing should begin with: Why are we doing this? Who is it for? And what is it supposed to do, for us and for the consumer? Some organizations never ask those questions, but they're essential if you want your content to be meaningful and get results.
Here at Evernote, we’re trying to help people manage information — to collect it, organize it, and find it whenever and wherever they need it — so they can focus on the things that matter to them. This company’s mission is helping people do their work more effectively. So our content has to have the same mission. It’s not just about selling the product, because Evernote isn’t just a product. It’s a means to an end.
When you look at it that way, our content becomes an extension of the product. It’s about inspiring people to think better, organize better, and use Evernote better so they can find that freedom to focus. We want all of our content to deliver real value.
Q: What sorts of pieces are you creating? What is effective for helping you achieve your goals?
A: Our content marketing breaks down into a few big buckets, which align with the kinds of pieces our audience responds to the most:
First, there’s educational content that helps people discover Evernote, learn why it might be right for them, and get the most value from it. With that kind of content, our goal is to get people to think about new ways to use the app so they use it more often to do more things. This takes the form of use cases, feature walkthroughs, demo videos, and tips. That’s not completely self-serving. We’ve found that the more notes someone creates, and the more they put into those notes, the more value they get out of Evernote.
Next, there’s guidance and inspiration for becoming more organized and productive. You could call that thought leadership, but it takes a lot of different forms, like interviews with productivity experts and teachers, explainers for popular productivity methods, or looking at the great thinkers of history and how they approached their work.
Third is all the corporate and funnel content that explains new features, tells our story, and builds awareness and gets people to try the product.
In terms of channels, we focus heavily on our blog and social media, but as we branch out we’re seeing the most growth in newer channels. We just hit 100,000 followers on Medium. Our “Taking Note” podcast has repeatedly reached the top 5 for tech news on iTunes, and our series of Facebook Live webinars is getting more viewers and more engagement with each installment.
Q: What do you think is the key to your success with Medium and podcasting? Are there any audience development tactics that have worked especially well for you?
A: I think in both of those cases -- with Medium and the podcast -- one of the main reasons we have been successful is that we have been focused on giving people useful and relevant content. We are really focused in both of these channels on giving people in-depth content that is of use to them, and that they can take and apply to their own methods of working.
With Medium we are very careful about which pieces we post and which we don’t. We take the audience on that platform into account and focus on things that they are going to be able to get something out of, and interact with, rather than just put up content for content's sake.
We also focus a lot on quality. We have freelancers but we don’t farm out our content creation. We keep the pool small. We are very careful about editing. We always want to make sure that we present our content in the best possible light. That includes the way that we edit our podcast; quality is hugely important.
In terms of building an audience, we find strategic use of our email newsletter very helpful. We always try to fit in the right pieces of content which we think are going to resonate with the most people. It’s not just everything we have published; it’s highly curated.
Also, we do a lot of cross-channel promotion. If we've got something interesting on Medium, we make sure we highlight it on other social channels. That helps a lot.
Q: How do you measure the success of your content marketing efforts? Which metrics do you pay close attention to?
A: We look at the fundamentals like clickthroughs and shares, time on page, and that sort of thing, but we’re also trying to dig deeper. Like for an article, there’s a big difference between unique views, average time on the page, and how many people actually reached the end of the article. Those are three totally different metrics, and all basic stuff, but you need to put them together if you want to have a truly useful picture of your content’s performance. And what did the reader do next? Click a link to learn more? Share it? Or just walk away? Reach matters, but engagement matters more.
We always look at comments, not just the number but the sentiment. That’s huge. Only a certain subset of your audience is made up of the sort of people who make comments — the enthusiasts, the passionate, and the cranks — but those are also often the people who care the most, who are most likely to amplify your good content and let you know when you’re not living up to your own standards.
You can also learn a lot from the metrics gathered across your organization, from registrations to customer support tickets to PR share of voice. I want to know how all of it’s doing and why because that tells me where our content is helping and where it isn’t.
Q: Any favorite pieces of Evernote content? What are some good examples of what you guys do?
For the company’s anniversary this summer, we put the spotlight on Stepan Pachikov, the original founder of Evernote. He’s a true visionary and an under-appreciated hero of Silicon Valley, but he also has a fascinating personal story. So one of our writers wrote a long profile that was really a piece of journalism. We wrote it as if it would be published in a prestige magazine like Vanity Fair or the New Yorker. It went deep and didn’t flinch. That piece went onto our Medium channel and became an Editor’s Pick. I was really proud of it.
On a more practical level, we discovered that our customers love being able to save time by using quality, pre-made note templates for specialized tasks, like goal setting or class projects, or even planning a novel. So we assembled an in-depth primer on how to use those templates and provided a whole set of templates that you can add to Evernote with a click. That blog post gathered hundreds of thousands of views in a very short time and people wrote in to thank us for making their days easier. That’s content as an extension of the product.
We also had a crew at the Confab content strategy conference this spring, where we were the official note-takers. Three writers covered every session at the conference, and a notebook full of all of those notes was made freely available to the public afterwards. You can view it even if you don’t use Evernote, but if you do use it, you can save the whole thing with one click and have those notes forever. We did the same thing at SXSW. Again, content as an extension of the product.
But some of my favorite content is when we’re just scrappy. Like when we ran a bunch of Twitter polls and then compiled the results into a fun little infographic summarizing a day in the life of our fans. That’s content as conversation, and it’s a beautiful thing.
Q: Finally, which content marketing trends are you keeping a close eye on? Which formats, tactics, or platforms do you think will have a major impact over the next few years?
A: I find the resurgence of podcasting over the past two years to be a remarkable phenomenon. I’m a radio DJ in my spare time, so maybe I’m just biased towards audio, but what I find most interesting about podcasting is that it allows the delivery of deep content through passive means.
Here’s what I mean by that: reading text or watching a video requires your full attention. It requires an active investment by the audience, not just of time but of focus, and that’s why so many great articles are languishing unread in people's Evernote, Feedly, and Pocket queues.
But a podcast is audio. It’s still a time investment, but it’s passive. You can listen while you drive, or cook, or do yard work. And it’s perfect for the kind of deep thought leadership content that actually changes minds or inspires people to think in a new way. That’s powerful AND convenient. So I’m a big fan of podcasting.
Over the next few years, I’m also very interested in seeing how native social media content evolves. You’re always going to stand a better chance of gaining attention if you go to where the audience already is. And an even better chance if you’re not “going” there at all, if it’s a natural environment for you. So we choose our social platforms carefully and try to suit the content to the people who are there and the ways they like to interact in those spaces. As artificial intelligence and other innovations come to those platforms, they may enable entirely new ways of personalizing interactions, and that could increase the value of social content exponentially. We’re already seeing that a video session on Facebook Live can be far more engaging than a traditional webinar. Just imagine when your content can be chopped up and reassembled to fit an individual’s interests and needs.
And while it isn’t content per se, I think real-world experiences are going to be increasingly important to brands. The more time we spend online, the harder it is for online content to stand out. It becomes background noise. Real, physical experiences like pop-up stores and fun events bring novelty and immersion. You can touch them, take a selfie in them, have real conversations with real people. When it’s well done, an experience like that has an impact far beyond the few people who are actually there. It touches their whole networks in a unique and authentic way.

Circle Track Magazine – How it all Began
The following are recollections provided by this magazine’s first Editor, C.J. Baker. From them, you will get a sense for how Circle Track came into being and set a course not far removed from where it continues today.
Baker and I have been friends for decades. I have been pleased to work with him and also observe his efforts and dedication to create an initial success with a magazine that largely pursued in-depth technical perspectives in a sport for which he had an intense passion: circle-track racing. Keep in mind that when he did so, there was no Internet, no social media, and very few personal computers or cellphones. Aside from radio and television, automotive enthusiasts and racers obtained their technical information from magazines. In this particular instance, Circle Track (by design) was intended to be that technical voice in the motorsports community. Moreover, with that challenge came the serious responsibility to be technically correct. Typically, if you read something in a magazine, you presumed it was accurate. In and of itself, that was a fairly weighty responsibility.
We want to emphasize that Baker wasn’t just the Editor. He accepted the challenge offered him (in what was then Petersen Publishing Company) that necessitated his dedication and drew from his experience to withstand most all the problems involved in a start-up effort. In this particular case, that included issues pertaining to advertising, magazine circulation, staffing, and costs, all apart from the delicate balance of creating the proper editorial content. He either had to do or oversee all of these elements while under the watchful eye of management. In retrospect, he performed extremely well, as the magazine anchored itself and prospered as noted in the annals of automotive journalism.
We hope you appreciate and enjoy this piece of motorsports history. Given all circumstances that prevailed at the time, it will never happen again.
Jim McFarland: Take us back to that time in the evolution of Petersen Publishing Company when the seeds were planted about the possibility of a “roundy-round” magazine. There were obviously obstacles, but as I recall, it was also a period of internal corporate growth.
C.J. Baker: Actually, PPC (Petersen Publishing Company) was in an expansion mode. ‘Pete’ (Bob Petersen) was looking for new markets for special-interest publications. The Specialty Book Division, being run by Lee Kelley, was a perfect venue to test such new markets. Lee conceived the notion of testing the audience potential for a publication dedicated to roundy round type racing. Such testing was primarily to determine the potential readership, not advertising potential, although advertisers were polled about their potential support, as well. Members of the Specialty Book staff who had automotive or racing familiarity were assigned to create a one-shot publication entitled Circle Track, which hit the newsstand during the first half of 1982. Although the editorial content of that one-shot wasn’t well focused, the magazine sold very well. In fact, it sold so well that the decision was made to immediately launch Circle Track as a monthly magazine.
JM: I don’t want to put words into your mouth, but a decision of that magnitude, given all the elements that necessitated the introduction of an all-new magazine and the coordination of those factors into a successful launch, was of particular significance.
CB: Well, it turned out to be very fortuitous. After people read the one-shot and feedback came in, the reviews couldn’t be accurately defined as glowing. But it was too late. The die had been cast to green-light Circle Track, although prior discussions about frequency had been to begin as a quarterly, progress to a bi-monthly and then, maybe, to a monthly. That all changed. In hindsight and in my opinion and to that point in time, Pete wasn’t too concerned about whether new launches were successful or not, and CT wasn’t the only new launch. I think his thinking was that if a new title succeeded, that was great, and he had a new profit center. But if it did not, he had a tax write-off during those prosperous years for PPC.
JM: OK. So now it was, for the most part, well beyond assembling plans for creating a monthly editorial package that not only including staffing, but in particular, finding an editor who could begin getting the cart back behind the horse.
CB: That brings us back to Lee Kelley. Lee’s concern was how to staff the publication and find an editor to develop an editorial concept and format. The search didn’t take very long. Prior to running the Specialty Book Division, Lee had been the editor of Hot Rod and knew of my love for roundy-round racing. He also knew after 10 years at Hot Rod that I was bored, even though I was functioning as HRM’s executive editor and Detroit’s editorial liaison. He also knew I had been a continual advocate of more roundy-round racing in Hot Rod, even though the magazine’s covering of roundy-round racing had almost always failed to produce any spikes in either newsstand sales or advertising revenue. So Lee and Pete made me a simple proposition: Stay at HRM or here’s your chance to pursue your interest in roundy-round racing as the editor of Circle Track. However, there was one clearly expressed stipulation. Make CT a success, and you’ll be on an upward path at PPC. But, if I failed, I was gone.
JM: Sounds pretty straightforward to me. Plus, having known them both for quite a number of years, I know they meant what they said, either way.
CB: I agree. So, I took the challenge. Lee charged me with the responsibility for determining the editorial direction and hiring writing staff. However, the Specialty Book Division would provide a production staff. So on June l, l982, Circle Track was assigned its own suite of offices in the 8490 Sunset Boulevard PPC building with a deadline to have the first monthly issue on the newsstand for October 1982. And to my everlasting gratitude, Lee provided me some of the best people he had in the Specialty Book Division.
JM: You know C.J., to a lesser degree, I can relate to the pressure you immediately came under. I had similar feelings the day I was informed I was the new editor at HRM. Other than to those who have experienced it, the weight that fell onto you at that point in your career is beyond description.
CB: Well, let me tell you, this was pretty heady stuff for a country boy from rural Illinois, even though I had been well seasoned at Hot Rod. Now Lee had given me a free hand, simply asking that I keep him apprised. So, at that point, CT was literally off to the races.
JM: Were there any related items that played into this launch worth mentioning here?
CB: Yes. I had indicated earlier that Hot Rod had not explored, to any great extent, roundy-round content and its appeal to the readership. But there was one exception. That exception was an occasional tech article contributed by legendary NASCAR and Indy car builder, Smokey Yunick. In truth, it was you, Jim, who arranged for me to meet and interview Smokey while I was at Hot Rod. An incredible professional and personal relationship with Smokey ensued. He was my technical teacher and mentor, my frequent advisor on all things automotive and, most importantly, my very good friend. In fact, I consulted with him before accepting the CT challenge. His response was simple: ‘I think you can do it, and probably be damn good at it. And if you think you can do it, take the job.’ And, of course, I immediately contracted Smokey to do a monthly question-and-answer column in CT.
At first, he didn’t want to do it. He’d previously done a Q&A column for Popular Science magazine, and he didn’t particularly enjoy it because most questions came from novices, seeking advice on daily transportation. Smokey thought of himself as a racer, and everything that term might include. I convinced him to do a racing Q&A column by telling him I didn’t want him to just provide answers to reader’s questions but to explain the logic, science, and physics behind his answers. Essentially, he was teaching CT readers ‘how to fish,’ rather than just ‘giving them a fish.’ That got him. He was on board. I also told him I’d let him be as ‘colorful’ as I possibly could and that I would personally edit his work, not a staffer. So I can truthfully say Smokey’s contributions to CT, and to me personally, greatly boosted CT’s success during the 18 years that I ran it.
JM: That’s not the whole story, C.J. as you and I both know. For that point in time within the monthly magazine publishing business, other factors aside from editorial content and advertising revenue drove the success or failure of the effort. We need to fill in some blanks here. Let’s return to that period right after the magazine launched, and you began to dig your heels into the tasks ahead.
CB: Well, there were some issues I hadn’t fully anticipated. Aside from periodic situations internal to the company with which Circle Track had to deal, there was an attempt by NASCAR to assert some control over the editorial with oversight of content. That, of course, wasn’t an option as far as I was concerned. Editorial objectiveness was essential. That did not please NASCAR.
I also revised the editorial focus and balance shortly after the initial launch. At first, I concluded (while sitting on the pit wall at the Daytona International Speedway for the 1982 Firecracker 400) that CT should appeal to both race fans and racers. I made the decision thinking there were a helluva lot more folks in the stands (this was while watching the pre-race filling of the stands) than there were people in the pits and garage area. So that’s how we launched CT. With personally hand-picked staff and freelance writers that could address racing from a historical perspective, while providing personality features, as well as great technical content that was usually based on first-hand experience and success. That approach worked pretty good in terms of acceptance of CT. In the first year, it became the best-selling racing magazine in America. In terms of audience, that was fine, too. But as a business, CT needed more advertising revenue and that was a challenge. The last thing the readers wanted was more commercials in the middle of the show, so to speak. So I made a change. One that changed everything.
JM: You know, C.J., there’s a side to the publishing business, or at least it manifested itself a bit differently back then than now. You may want to share the thoughts you had about all the various aspects of the magazine regarding the overall scope of your responsibilities and the pressures that came with that load.
CB: Actually, there was a side to the job that may not have been apparent to those outside the staff and PPC management. The magazine wasn’t just about being a service to its readers. When you peel away the great pictures, great articles, and informative teaching, the cold hard fact is a magazine is a business that has to make money to survive. Let me put that more into perspective.
Although launched by Lee Kelley, before the first issue hit the newsstands, Harry Hibler (the publisher of Hot Rod) was also given publisher’s responsibility for CT, and I no longer reported to Lee. In those days at PPC, the publisher was responsible for the financial success of magazines under their control. Harry had a full plate with HRM and within a year, I was named associate publisher for CT. Not long after that, I was named publisher as well as editor. Doing both jobs required long hours, but wearing both hats eliminated a lot of arguments between the editor and publisher. In other words, some of my priorities had to be re-adjusted. No longer was I being judged just by CT’s circulation numbers, but also by the advertising revenue CT generated.
At about the same time all of this was happening politically in PPC, Hot Rod and Car Craft magazines were backing away from technical content in favor of car features, event coverage, and general-interest editorial. They opened the technical content door just a crack, and I decided to kick it open. I announced to the automotive advertising community that CT was going to become the most technically oriented magazine in the PPC automotive stable. Further, that CT wasn’t just going to increase the number of pages devoted to technical articles, but the level of those articles would largely be graduate-level tech instead of the entry-level tech of HRM and Car Craft. I did this without prior approval of higher management, and to my surprise, my announcement was met with no opposition. At least until CT began to be a thorn in HRM’s foot.
It was a great solution. Suddenly, advertisers of racing parts and services, high-performance automotive parts, and others were clamoring to buy space in CT because it was going directly to the racers who bought their products. The ads featured products and services for roundy-round racers. The ads, too, were the stuff the readers wanted to know about, and the more pages of advertising CT carried, the more pages of actual editorial it was allowed to run. The magazine got thicker and circulation didn’t drop. The spectator readership was getting same-day coverage on TV, so they weren’t looking for that in CT, but racers were eager for real technical knowledge, which wasn’t time sensitive.”
JM: Looking back, it appears you did more than succeed, at least in terms of the internal impact of what you were doing on other PPC automotive magazines. From experience, I know for a time HRM was indirectly in competition with Motor Trend (another PPC automotive title), particularly in the area of new-vehicle road tests. But we had different audiences. In your case, the HRM readership included a segment of those looking for solid technical material, so the success you had initiated had to have been bleeding into HRM space.
CB: Actually, it turned out that way. As a direct result, PPC management began to place some constraints on CT, especially in the areas of circulation promotion, and editorial budget. Of course, it wasn’t long after that when Pete sold the company (for the first time), and the company then experienced yet another sell-off. I had simply become a well-compensated senior employee, and the way of the world was embracing the 24 Syndrome by the practice of hiring new employees who were 24 years old, who would work for 24 hours a day, were paid $24K a year and were likely to burn out in 24 months. I departed in 2000.
JM: I know you realize now all these events, culminating when they did, turned out to be pretty much a blessing for you. The emergence of the internet, and along with the arrival of the social-media craze, had a visible impact on the publishing community as you and I had known it to be.
CB: For many magazines, because of these changes, all this signaled the end of the golden age for the publishing landscape as it had evolved. This was especially true in terms of advertising revenue. I was extremely lucky to have had 28 great years in the business. I was also blessed to have had incredibly talented and dedicated people on the staff, in the ad sales department and as freelance contributors to Circle Track. I certainly didn’t do it alone. And if I had the chance to do it all over again, there is almost nothing that I would do differently in terms of editorial direction and focus.
I had incredible support from Bob Petersen and company president Fred Waingrow. But, being wiser today, I would have asked for a commitment to circulation promotion of the new magazine when I accepted the Circle Track challenge. And, of course, my greatest thanks goes to Lee Kelley who had faith in me and gave me the opportunity. To all of the readers and advertisers who supported CT and who helped and encouraged me, I will always be grateful. Man, it was one helluva ride!

Over the past ten years, I've both worked as a freelancer and hired countless freelancers, some for six-figure positions. And along the way, I've noticed that there are a few freelancer skills that pay more than others. Want to join the ranks of six-figure and other well remunerated freelancers? Here are the skills that hirers are looking for:
1. Natural language processing/Twilio API Development
Thanks to the emergence of voice-activated assistants, such as Amazon ($AMZN) Echo and Google ($GOOG) Home, natural language processing has become one of, if not the most in-demand freelancing skills.
This particular gig, in which you enable machines to understand human language, requires a background in computer science, artificial intelligence, and linguistics, and can command at its highest levels a salary of well over $100,000 annually.

The Apple Watch was developed using the programming language Swift. Since sales for the Apple Watch broke records during the 2016 holiday season, demand for freelancers skilled in developing this iOS app is surging, with an average salary of $85,000.

This one shouldn’t come as a surprise. After all, businesses of all sizes are in need of talented individuals to implement and manage the day-to-day activities for their social media marketing campaigns.
While not as high-paying as more-tech related skills, social media managers average between $67,750 and $94,250 per year.
4. Amazon Marketplace Web Services (MWS)
Amazon Marketplace Web Service (Amazon MWS) is an integrated web service API that assists Amazon sellers to programmatically exchange data on listings, orders, payments and reports. Since this online ecommerce site is showing no signs of slowing, there’s a need for freelancers with python skills. This also includes devops companies.
The amount freelancers can charge clients will vary depending on the scope of the project.

5. AngularJS development
With this skill, you can extend HTML vocabulary in order to build either mobile or desktop web applications. Since this is the framework for dynamic web apps, the demand for this skill should continue to increase.

6. MySQL programming
As the world’s most popular open-source database, this skill -- which requires knowledge in web-scripting languages like PHP -- can earn freelancers between $45,495 and $99,187,depending on their experience.
7. Instagram marketing
Out of all the social media channels, Instagram is rapidly becoming the most popular. It’s also underutilized for anyone wanting to grow a business. That’s why the company is searching for marketers experienced with the Gram.
While there professional “Instagrammers” who are making six figures, the average Instagram marketer should expect around $15 per hour.
8. Twilio API development
Those who can build SMS, voice and messaging applications on an API -- specifically, Twilio’s cloud-based communication platform -- are in high demand; and they can also earn up to a solid $35 per hour.

Business consultants work with clients on everything from strategy, planning and problem solving, to the development of business skills and knowledge. On average, a business consultant earns $71,254 per year.

According to Upwork, “data science is the fastest-growing category on its site for the second quarter in a row. Machine learning moved from Upwork's spot in Q3 to number 12 in Q4 "but continues to see rapid growth.”
The average machine learning engineer salary is $114,826. I've found that some of the best engineers in machine learning are found on Toptal. It's another place where you can both hire and get six-figure jobs.
12. 3D rendering
In general, freelance designers are one of the hottest gigs around. Technology like 3D printing has become increasingly prevalent. In fact, it’s anticipated to grow from $4.1 billion in revenue in 2014 to $12.8 billion by 2018. Currently, the average national salary is around $56,000.
13. Zendesk customer support
As support inquiries continue to skyrocket, customer-service software companies like Zendesk are looking for individuals to build customize experiences by placing products into existing APIs, apps and mobile SDKs. Software engineer salaries at Zendesk can range between $76,969 and $134,061. Another option would be to work with a company like Support Ninja. I've used that company and love its service.
14. Information security
Information-security analysts plan, as well as carry out, security measures to protect an organization’s computer networks and systems, to thwart the increasing number of cyber-attacks.
Information security analysts can charge over $44 per hour.

15. R development
R is a programming language and software environment used for statistical computing and graphics, such as polls and surveys, which is commonly used by data miners. It’s supported by the R Foundation for Statistical Computing. An R programmer can earn an average salary of $76,607 per year.
16. User experience design
Both website and app designers demand to be blown away whenever they land on a website or download an app. UX designers are responsible for these tasks through the creation of products that are simple and improve the experience of visitors.
The average national salary is $87,883. I have found most of my best designers on 99Designs, it's a great place to pick up great paying gigs.
17. Node.js development
A Node.js developer is responsible for writing server-side web application logic in JavaScript, as well as variants like CoffeeScript or IcedCoffeeScript. The average salary for a NodeJS developer in the United States is $107,562.

21. Virtual assistant
Businesses are continuing to restructure and downsize. As such, everyone from business owners and managers to entrepreneurs is turning to virtual assistants to help manage administrative tasks, such as responding to emails, scheduling appointments and even handling public relations services.
The average salary is $15.56 per hour.

22. Immigration law
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) expects a 6 percent job growth for all lawyers between 2014 and 2024. However, with the anxiety and uncertainty surrounding immigration under the Trump administration, immigration law is on a rapid rise. The median annual salary for lawyers as $115,820.
23. Accounting (CPA)
Despite the plethora of accounting software available, the freelancer generation is still in need of accountants to better understand complex issues like tax codes and deductions.
The average national salary is $65,940.
24. Photography/video editing
According to a report released by Freelancers.com, jobs for photographers have grown by about 22 percent, thanks to the fact that employers are “finally understanding the importance of high-quality pictures on their landing pages.”
The demand for video editing, in particular, saw a 19 percent increase due to the same factors that caused the increase in photography jobs.
25. Voiceover artists
“While voiceover work has been around for decades, the move to digital is enabling talent to record from virtually anywhere," CNBC has noted. “Telephony, audiobook readers, dubbing work, e-learning instruction, animation dialogue and video game voices are just some of the jobs calling for voice actors.”
A voice actor can charge such fees as $100 for a 15-second recording and $250 for a 30- or 60-second commercial, to about $3,000 per audiobook.
