@thechillsquid submitted: Hello! It’s not a bit since I’ve sent in some friends I’ve seen, let me go ahead and remedy that!
What a lovely fella! Very fashionable coloration.

any wasp experts know why it looks like they're chewing up one of their own babies? or is it that all grubs look the sameish?
It did get down to the 40s so maybe the cold killed it and they're recycling?

Bug of the Day
My veggie prison brings all the wasps to the yard.
And they're like, I'm gonna just chew up a bit of this wood here and turn it into a nest...

@bluem1st submitted: Hello! Hope you are well. I was wondering if you could tell me what these are please?
Hello! I am well. The fella on the left is an ocellated shield bug, Cantao ocellatus, and the one on the right is a paper wasp in the genus Polistes. If I had to make an educated guess about species based on where these resin-encased bugs usually come from, I'd say Polistes olivaceus. But there are a lot of Polistes species in the world that all look super similar, so take that one with a grain of salt.

[VIDEO TAKEN: JUNE 28TH, 2024 | Video ID: A video of a red, yellow, and black paper wasp on the side of the paper nest, flapping its wings, seeming to be otherwise calm, as another wasp enshadowed by thw nest (bottom of the screen) does the same thing /End ID.]
Honestly, this is one instance where I'm somewhat stumped by this behavior! It's very clearly not beating its wings out of aggression or anxiety, so this behavior likely has another reason altogether. Could be a form of thermoregulation, or some form of preparation for the flight muscles, by what I've seen other people saying, but it's unclear and hard to find information on.

Polistes dominula with a sugary snack! She's very yellow, never seen one with a solid yellow clypeus.
