Yeah I kinda agree. Kinda feel like there's rarely any nuance to this sort of thing. And also to a lesser extent, the idea of reuniting with Ingo later. I feel like he'd have very complicated feelings here and it's always "oh I'm sad. oh there's Ingo! I'm happy!" or some odd platonic yandere thing.

I've got a sort of mix between depression and mentally ill with my WIP fanfic series Pokémon Unown Legends Tale (which I'll just call PULT)

Before Ingo vanished, him and Emmet grew up together in Opelucid under their father Drayden. They moved to Nimbasa as adults to start their career. Several years later, Ingo got married, and he moved back to Opelucid with his wife. He never abandoned Emmet of course, they saw each other every day for the majority of the day. Ingo would often come over with his wife and two kids (Iris and Drayton) and stay at Emmet's house. Elesa often stayed over too.

This is all context to say; Emmet never really spent that long away from Ingo. They grew up together and did everything together, Ingo was his older brother. His much kinder, more emotionally stable brother. Not to say that Emmet is some pathetic baby who couldn't do anything by himself and was completely codependent, but he never had life without his brother up until this point and didn't have time to adjust.

Because one day, Ingo was heading on the train back to Opelucid after work. When Emmet went home, he realized Ingo left his wedding ring behind. He's made the mistake a few times, forgetting to put it on since gloves are part of their uniform. And that's a sensory nightmare to wear them both at the same time. No problem, Emmet took the train to Opelucid to get Ingo his ring back. But when he got there, nobody in Opelucid had seen him all day. He went around town, asking everyone. His father, his sister in law, his niece and nephew, Ingo just was nowhere to be seen. But this isn't right, Emmet saw him off! He knew he took the train! And he knows for a damn fact that the train didn't have an accident, he owns the fucking subway!

It felt like a paradox. And that got Emmet to start questioning his reality. He convinced himself that Ingo got caught up in something else and was in some other town. Alright. He kept the ring on him as he went all around Unova. He was nowhere. Ingo was nowhere. Emmet reported him missing. Emmet helped the police investigation, and he kept everything of Ingo's in top condition. He needed it all to be perfect for when Ingo got back, of course.

The Ryuuzaki family was starting to fall apart. Emmet already didn't really talk to Drayden that much even when Ingo was still around. He had even less of a reason to when Ingo vanished. Drayton never exactly wanted to see Emmet all that often. He was trying to forget about his father after all. Ingo's widow didn't really care about seeing Emmet either. Drayton was in Drayden's care, and Emmet definitely didn't want to see Drayden (hell, neither did Drayton), they just all talked less and less. Emmet was already getting isolated for not having a family of his own like his brother, so he was kind of lost. He wasn't codependent on Ingo, but he really was the only family member of his that was always by his side. And so that just left Elesa by his side.

Emmet may have had depression, but it's not like he sat around and did nothing all the time. He kept Ingo's room in top condition. He constantly cooked Ingo's favorite meals. He kept the Singles train operational. Ingo will come back, he will. He's okay, and I want everything to be just as he left it. To the point he was neglecting his own needs.

And then he started to see him. Emmet, in sleepless delirium, started seeing Ingo everywhere. He always went to the police with this, and this lead would always turn up cold. Because of course, Ingo wasn't there. The police ruled Ingo dead, and dismissed everything Emmet said to them. That may or may not have gotten them yelled at by Emmet once or twice. Emmet's mental state deteriorated for sure, and he got diagnosed with schizophrenia, but he wasn't sent away in a straightjacket or anything. But he was certainly warned.

Then the start of PULT! PULT starts 10 years after BW2. Emmet is definitely on his last strike from the authorities. He's not actively tweaking, but the police think he's a bit of a problem. He's not making deals with Gods, but he's praying to his ancestor Cresselia. But it seems like things really are not going well here. The entirety of Unova is suddenly enveloped in a snowstorm, in the middle of spring. Emmet is helping the efforts of evacuating people in Nimbasa and getting to them to shelter, using his and Ingo's Pokémon. The protagonist group assists Emmet in the efforts, and Emmet realizes that Drayton is a member of the group. Because of Drayton, Emmet offers the group his own home for them to seek shelter in. Most other shelters are completely full anyways, and this is a pretty large group.

Emmet seems mostly stable to the group, as he prepares an easy dinner for everyone. Him and Hop have a very long and cheerful discussion about Psychic culture, educating the group. Emmet shows off a little. He seems fine enough. He's not completely faking, but his resting smile betrays him a little.

The group lets Emmet in on their plans to save Unova. Emmet accepts the strange reality and offers his help and his home. They have to enter an alternate dimension known as the Scripted World to defeat the alternate version of Elesa to stop the cold in Nimbasa. But their bodies don't go into the dimension, just their minds. So they need a safe place for their bodies. Emmet is just fine with them staying for a few days to work that out. Unfortunately, his hospitality (and desire to reconnect with his nephew lol) betrays him.

Before that, we must mention Drayton's strange Gengar. It's a dragon type, for some reason. It has horns, a long tail, and it frowns... Like a constant frown, even though Gengar constantly smile... Drayton's Gengar takes a real liking to Emmet. The Gengar even stays by Emmet when he falls asleep at the dining room table. Emmet recognized aspects of this Gengar, but he wasn't about to voice his thoughts, because he didn't really want to accept that reality.

After the gym battle with Elesa, the group goes into the Scripted World. Well, specifically the group of Hop, Marion, Violet, Astrid, Raihan, and Drayton. Leon and Dark can't exactly go inside (Leon lacks Willpower, Dark lacks Emotion) and Skylar & Kazarah need a mental health break so all four of them are on the outside, defending the group along with Emmet. And as the group is in the Scripted World, Emmet's home is attacked by an enemy known as Instinct. She's a mono-electric type human with Wonder Guard.

Emmet releases him and Ingo's Pokémon to fight her, sending several to help everyone else escape. But Instinct kept ignoring them and kept trying to kill the people in the Script, so Emmet used himself as a barrier. Because of his Psychic heritage, he is functionally a Psychic/Dragon type Pokémon. He can't really fight back that much with moves because again Wonder Guard, but he defends the group long enough. Emmet, and Drayton's Gengar, were defeated and knocked out cold.

Emmet wakes up in the hospital. Drayton's Gengar wakes up in the Pokémon Center. Because he doesn't have a pokéball, he needs more time to heal. But Gengar ignores instructions and escapes to find the hospital. Because he suddenly remembers exactly who Emmet was...

He rushes into the hospital room Emmet is in just in time to witness Drayden and Emmet in an argument. Drayden had been tearing into Drayton for not preventing Emmet from getting hurt, and Emmet was defending Drayton while also trying to not reveal exactly what was happening. Gengar suddenly breaks up the fight by transforming into a human.

Ingo.

The Gengar is Ingo.

And why did I go this far into my explanation? Well it goes back to what I said at the start, about how I wanted to see a tad more nuance in the "Emmet and Ingo reunite" part. Not like it's wrong that people make him 100% happy, but complicated emotions would be interesting.

So here. They reunited. Ingo had died in Hisui and finally found Unova after 600 years. And he chased his whispy memories and broke through amnesia to find out who his family members were. And he figured out his brother, his father, AND his son! And how do they react?

Drayden doesn't seem that excited to see him.

Drayton's not exactly in a good spot to process that.

And Emmet? Emmet doesn't believe it's him.

"Gengar, why? ...Why are you making yourself look like Ingo?!"

Ingo tries to insist that it is him, but Emmet doesn't want to believe it. Because that means that Ingo was dead this entire time. That those cops were right. That he was delusional. That he was hallucinating. That he screamed at those people to keep looking for nothing. Everything he worked for was for NOTHING.

And that's the hospital's last straw. Emmet was admitted and Ingo just had to move on from that and move through the journey with Drayton kinda awkwardly and feeling absolutely terrible.

A few months later, they get notice that Emmet is out of the hospital. Ingo asks to go back to Nimbasa to see him, and they do. Emmet is in a much better space this time, and he has had time to grieve. This time, he hugs the ghost and apologizes for his outburst. He tries to explain himself, but Ingo just lets him know it's okay. He understood that Emmet was going through a LOT. He was paralyzed, he was facing how not-great his father was again, some of his Pokémon fucking died, and then having to face that Ingo was dead all in what, several minutes? So he needed time. And he was given time. And now that he has been given that time, he's so grateful to see Ingo again. But he's not going to force Ingo to never leave his side. But, he makes Ingo and Drayton promise to keep in touch.

K, this is gonna be short, since I am just gonna complain, BUT I HATE THAT THERE ARE JUST 2 PORTRAYALS OF EMMET AFTER INGO'S ISEKAI ADVEN-TOUR.

I know it's a bit of an exaggeration, but it just FEELS like there are 2 ways either the

Anyways, share your headcannons as to what the bro does after B2W2, my personal favourite is that he works with International police to find him and gets sent to do undercover jobs OR in AUs where the legendaries are involved he pairs up with Reshiram and then tries to set things up for Ingo to get back home.

alternate take on legends protagonist, started as a self insert but I want to make them their own thing:

-Unhinged!! They don’t want to destroy the world per say, but becoming god? Harnessing the power of creation? Jokes on you they’re into that shit! You see the rift incident wasn’t a total accident on their part. Sure, they stumbled into it. But one does not simply spend their time creeping around spear pillar if they’re not looking for rifts to stumble into. Much like Volo they’ve been tailing arceus and the creation trio for years. Heard reports of strange activity, went to investigate. Oops I fell into the rift whatever shall I do~?

-Aside from Kamado’s general suspicions the village folk never truly question their intense fascination with pokemon, especially of the legendary variety. So easily impressed by their skill and quick to fall into praising their dedication to research and the Galaxy Team’s cause. They’re 100% a closet mad scientist, but it’s so cute how the professor and that sweet survey corp kid call them a hero! They don’t have the heart to ruin the fun! And of course free (not really) lodging is also a plus.

-Let’s 👏🏻 Get 👏🏻 Meta 👏🏻 !! I don’t wanna get into territory that implies a real ass person is interacting with what (to them) are literal game characters. Cause there’s a ship here and despite uhh everything I’m not that far gone. plz understand this. but plz also understand my whole point is to go wild with reality bending shenanigans. Case in point: This person is the only one who can read unown. Volo wasted hours of his life staring at inscriptions in ruins taking notes, cross referencing every language in recorded history getting absolutely nowhere. Because unown are english letters. The pokemon world has its own letters, they don’t look like unown.

-Occasionally slip in their vocab. People brush it off as them being from the future. In the thing I just wrote they go “at sp- The temple.” Ah shit it’s not called spear pillar yet. Call the lustrous globe and adamant crystal “orbs.” that’s future stuff. but then there’s other stuff. “Unown the pokemon. You’ve never heard of them? Little floating eyes, alphabet soup. Code of the world? Not ringing any bells?” *details their venture into a space time distortion* “Great haul this time! Grabbed a bunch of RGB shards too.” Think Narnia, Wizard of Oz, classic fantasy/fairy tale stuff y’know? MC is transported to a magical world. Which for the purpose of this AU is a very real alternate reality. Look the fourth wall and I have a history ok... I know what I’m doing. part of my hyperfixation is the excitement of getting to use my Thing™️ in a pokemon fic.

-The way they talk like a modern person in my time loop shitpost/ficlet is gonna be on purpose too. It’d sound pretty weird to talk like that in meiji period japan I think, and this character would know that. They’d edit their voice and dial it back a lot around... basically everyone. Except Volo. They get fellow mad scientist vibes from Volo and drop their guard for him quite noticeably. Especially after the time he accused the rift of spitting them out to get in his way and looked straight up, where their homeworld beyond the sky would be. If I were there now... he might’ve looked right into my eyes. They see him and think: He knows I don’t belong here, and that he doesn’t belong either. We’re the same! Mayhaps we can not belong together??

-Zero self preservation. Rushes into fights with creatures in the wilderness without hesitation, sees portals tear open the sky and bounces excitedly. “I almost wanna let Volo reset the universe just to see what would happen” wait crap don’t show your hand “but giratina would kill me before I got the chance so- anyway.” nailed it. People ask if they have a death wish. The truth is... they should’ve been dead yesterday. Maybe, in a way, they have died. Many times. Mauled by an ursaring in the woods, drowned, fallen off cliffs, fallen from the sky itself. But every time they “die,” they see it. Them. The code of the world. A sea of eyes drifting and swirling, arranging themselves into strange patterns. Singing an odd lilting melody. There are words they recognize, but the sentence structure is all wrong and the context the words are used in doesn’t make sense. It’s like a foreign language. A language within a language. coding class is kicking my ass And then they wake up. Back at base camp like nothing ever happened. It seems you were rescued. By what? Arceus? Maybe. But somehow... it doesn’t feel like arceus. Arceus has plans. Stories with predetermined endings. Plans that have no room for mine, they never did. No love for those who dare mess with the code of its perfect world. But the code itself? It holds no attachments. It cares not for wrong or right, fate, outcomes. It faces us only with openness. Acceptance. Arceus only cares for us when we play by its rules. Why strive for its approval when the eyes see us void of judgment ha gettit . Tell me Volo, if we could speak to them in a way they’d understand would they care whether or not we bear the name “almighty Sinnoh?” The eyes are pure possibility. If we could speak to them... in their view, what’s the difference between arceus and us? Quit your job. Join my unown farm. Fuck I have too many words I’m dying squirtle

speaking of pokemon though...

ideas for the various Pokemon Legends remake line:

Pokemon Legends: The Ancient Jungle/Mew

Based on an ancient jungle environment where fossil and dinosaur pokemon thrive an abound, the environment is thick muggy jungle and the lore of the game focuses on the discovery of the ancient pokemon Mew perhaps by following clues related to the origins of Ditto as potentially related to Mew, side stories about the origins of the legendary bird pokemon (also, even though Lugia is gen 2, perhaps he could be included here since hes the supposed leader of the bird trio? and the Johto game would focus on Ho-oh and the Beasts anyway) Mewtwo obivously wouldn’t feature but that’s fine he doesn’t need to, could easily have stories about Meltan and Melmetal instead, who are ancient pokemon

Pokemon Legends: The Burned Tower/Ho-oh

Based on a more traditional ancient Japanese style retelling of the origins of Ho-oh and the Legendary Beast trio, see the original tower burned, maybe finally see who exactly were the three original pokemon lost in the flames? with side stories about Celebi’s ancient forest and it’s travels through time but also GIVE ME UNOWN LORE BLEASE

Pokemon Legends: The Great Meteor/Jirachi

Goes into the ancient stories of the draconid people introduced in the delta episode of the ORAS remakes, Primal Ancient Kyogre and Groudon, at the peak of their power, a time where meteors constantly fell upon the earth and the first ever Mega-Evolution of Rayquaza, from the wish the first lorekeeper made upon the rainbow stone (Maybe this was originally just Jirachi themselves), plenty of side story content in the form of the Regi’s (Including Regigigas and Regidraco/Regieleki) and the twin Latias/Latios

Pokemon Legends: Arceus, duh

(but I can hope it’s not JUST Arceus, ples give some spotlight to the tons of underused in lore legendaries this gen, Darkrai, Cresselia, Shaymin, Manaphy, HEATRAN)

Pokemon Legends: The First Dragon/Kyurem/??? Pokemon that might have a different name then Kyurem

OBVIOUSLY gonna be about the first dragon, the true singular form of the original dragon that split into Kyurem, Reshiram and Zekrom and the conflict between the early factions of humans hinted from the story of black and white, give the Justice trio (Terrakion, Cobalion, Virizion, Keldeo) some side story content in the form of being active in those ancient human conflicts, Victini lore, the weather trio representing the wilderness of nature back in those times, Genesect very likely wouldn’t be a thing, but Meloetta could

Pokemon Legends: The Ultimate Weapon/Zygarde

Huge potential here for a pokemon game set during the great kalosian WAR, view the original stories of King AZ and the unique floette, how their story happened, give Zygarde some sort of role or function as antagonist against those who would create the weapon out of a captured Zerneas/Yveltal in it’s role as balancer of the natural order, easy easy side content stories, flesh out Diancie’s connection to the Carbinks, go into the story of that huge crystal sundial of Anistar City, Hoopa gots some cool stuff, and Volcanion could even have a role as something cool

Pokemon Legends: Ultra Space/Necrozma

While they could focus on Magearna for this game, since Magearna is the only pokemon with some Ancient Lore from within the region itself attached to it from this gen, I fell like Sun and Moon’s fancy legends game would actually be better served by exploring much deeper into the role of the Ultra Space, you get glimpses of the alien worlds when visiting the ultra beasts natural habitats, and you get the main Necrozma based city in ultraspace

Modern Alola is actually already very traditional, already holding fast to ancient observations and traditions that going back to plain olden times alola I feel wouldn’t do as much? Esp cuz all the interesting stuff back then the aura and totem Pokémon, all happened because of Necrozma’s fall into the world from Ultra Space

I think the intro would be best served as starting in the distant past of Alola sure, but then Necrozma falls out of Ultra Space, rips open a wormhole, and our protagonist is then Sucked Into it and their journey is throughout the cosmos of the space inbetween and giving legendary like lore to the actual Ultra Beasts themselves, Lunala and Solgaleo and Cosmog/Cosmoem originate from here anyway, so they could still be included in this story as our way back, perhaps as our original ally in the fight to stop Necrozma from devouring all the light of our world in the travels through ultra space

Marshadow and Zeraora should get some obvious love as well for sure

Pokemon Legends: The Darkest Day/Eternatus

So it’s true that we have a clear once a time story with the darkest day event from Eternatus’s history

but funnily enough, I kinda always figured that that “Darkest day” was actually Necrozma’s doing that got falsely attributed to Eternatus, since yknow, in eating of the light of the world, the day would actually darken, and doesn’t Eternatus look REALLY like something that popped out of an Ultra Wormhole? really makes you think...certainly would be a hell of a coincedence

On the flipside for “okay but what else would they do in ancient galar”, I feel like if they did do a Galar Legends game, I think a pokemon King Arthur type legendary story would be very cool, just legit make a pokemonized King Arthur/Calyrex story and we would go Nuts over it

sooo, Pokemon Legends: The Old Kingdom/Calyrex

obviously Calyrex and his steeds would be the main focus of this ancient tale with some sprinklings of Zacian/Zamazenta, but really when you glean through the ancient stories hidden in the galar, more of it focuses on the Acnient Kings of the galar region, and really Eternatus already got explored enough in the actual galar games anyway, give me the Dark Hidden Lore of Galar

but again, still some very cool side content with Zarude and Urshifu at least and perhaps maybe a tad more of the cuckoo galarian bird trio? make it tie all the way back to Legends Kanto game somehow? Ancient bird rivalry between twin trios of legendary birds would be a neat thing to explore

though how neat would it be if they actually tied all fo the ancient apolcalyptic stories from across the regions into one connected story?

in Hoenn it was that a great meteor threatened to destroy the planet so person wishes on a falling shiny rock to make the apocalypse go away, SunMoon has Necrozma darkening the sky and eating the light and when they got shattered it caused powerful shiny rocks to coalesce out of the sky, SwordShield had twin kings wish upon a magic shiny rock to make the darkest day go away

hey wait a minute, seeing a pattern there...

wonder if the great war of kalos old was also fought under some sky darkening event? and if it also involved the magical power of some shiny rock? and each region’s story is just their personal twist on the same ancient event, in the land of old, when all regions were once one...

what if the ancient conflict in Black/White’s history was actually the same war from kalos’s history? And it was actually a war between Unova and Kalos? Same war from two different sides of the conflict

Myths and lores of rareita? Are there any bogeyman stories of Pokemon to scare kids into behaving like the rl Grimm's fairy tales?

Rareita has a few myths and legends, some are true and some are not. It is commonly believed that the messages inside the ruins were written by Unown on the walls. It is unknown how Six could read this language, but some believe being the descendant brought the perk of being able to read the language of the Unown. This legend is true, although it has not been revealed to be true. There is another legend that speaks of the Mythical Legendary Pokemon Nareeta, and it is believed that it blessed the lands with the graces of the stars. This allowed Pokemon to evolve into previously unknown forms. This is a legend that is true, but no one is sure about. A third legend, currently not known to the public, is that the original founders of Rareita who faced the Great Calamity were blessed by Nareeta with the gift of the stars inside themselves. It was said to give them extraordinary powers beyond what any human could do, and it varied some from person to person. This legend is true, however only Six knows it to be true now.

Rareita’s myths and boogieman tales to scare children around a campfire are sometimes rather outlandish, but other times, they hold truth. One of the most common stories told is that if you aren’t nice to fire type Pokemon, and especially Growlithe and Arcanine, the soul of Helios will come to haunt you and drag you into the Cave of Spirits for the poison types to get you. This story is entirely untrue, it was simply a fun tale children started saying a year or so after Helios died. It has not been mentioned to Six. Many ghost stories relate to Pepla City, unsurprisingly. Since this is the location of the Pokemon graveyard of the region, people often associate it with being incredibly scary and grey ( not to mention the lack of color in the town ). One of the most commonly known ghost stories of Pepla City is that if you walk by the Dreen Manor late at night, sometimes the Manor’s ghost Pokemon will take you away into the Manor and turn you into a mindless servant for the rest of your days. Most people believe this to be a myth, however, it is actually true.

I see! That is good to know, I didn't exactly have the full magnitude of your experience. I've just been kind of skimming profiles. You're definitely a lot more cooperative.

I'll start with something that's been bothering me for a long time, then. In my universe, there are regions that don't have fully established Pokémon leagues. Often tearing them down in protest of Galar's oppression. They still have Pokémon of course, but the league isn't a thing. Do these regions, with or without leagues, just...not exist anywhere else??

Like, I'm Irish. But others I've talked to claimed that Ireland just...doesn't exist? It's honestly pretty saddening to know my people literally do not exist. Is this true over there as well?

I saw something. It wasn’t a normal Pokemon and I’ve never heard or seen any tales about this thing. It was like a computer graphic glitch brought to life. I scanned it with my poedex and all it said was “Missing no.”

Ohhhh, how spooky!

“Missing No.” is actually a rather popular urban legend these days, so it’s quite exciting that you were able to witness it with your own eyes! Regrettably, I don’t have an explanation for you that will completely satisfy your curiosity, but some have come to theorize that “Missing No.” is somehow linked to Unown! I don’t know how, exactly, but we don’t know very much about either one so perhaps they’re connected somehow.

. . . Or not! Maybe it’s a Pokémon ghost! Since it’s so rare, I wonder if it would count as a mythical Pokémon. Perhaps I should try to take a class about it!

Do keep us updated if you have any further experiences with it!

Anime I need to watch (April 2017 Update)

Wow, has it been a month already? Okay then, time to give my thoughts on the anime I’ve seen this month and then update my list accordingly. A LOT more to go through this time since I’ve been on a bit of a movie binge

Okay, first off I’ve just finished the Dark Tournament Saga of Yu Yu Hakusho, so I’m up to episode 67 out of 112. I got through it a bit slower than I thought because other stuff kept coming up. I’ll still give more of my thoughts on the show when I’m done, but I’ll say I really liked this saga. It was very well written, had some great fight scenes, and the story and character development were very compelling. If I have any complaints it’s that the saga sometimes felt like it dragged on a lot, it did feel like it took forever to get through even without the breaks I took. Also, Genkai suddenly showing up alive out of nowhere at the end of episode 66 was stupid and nonsensical and it better get a good explanation, because right now this just seems so forced and unnecessary.

In between that though, I also got the DVD for the series The Devil is a Part Timer in the post, so I took a day off to binge watch all 13 episodes.

The Christian part of me wonders if I should really be watching a show starring Satan as the main character and portraying him as actually not that bad a guy. But then again, the geek in my is just shrugging my shoulders and having fun with such a ridiculous premise as the devil working in a McDonalds parody. Weird feeling in the back of my head aside though, the show was pretty fun and charming. The characters were likeable, the humour was fine and overall it was just an enjoyable show through and through.

It’s not perfect, the second to last episode felt pretty underwhelming, and the final episode while not bad didn’t really feel like a final episode, though that epilogue was nice. And yeah, this feels like a story that was meant to go on longer than it did, but it’s been four years and no second season so I’m guessing we’re not getting any more of it in anime form. I guess I could give the light novels or manga a try, but it always irks me whenever I get into a show only to find out it was ended sooner than it should have been. But apart from that, I didn’t have any big problems. It’s a good show. Not amazing, but it was fun and a pleasant way to kill some time, and sometimes that’s all I need. Not much else I can think to say and I have a lot else to talk about.

Like I mentioned in my last update, I got the DVD for the movie Only Yesterday, one of the few Studio Ghibli films I haven’t seen yet, which only got dubbed fairly recently. So I watched it at the start of the month aaaaaaaannnd... it wasn’t for me.

Now before anyone comments, Only Yesterday wasn’t a bad movie. I get what they were going for with it, being a series of events from someone’s life and to paint a picture about what sort of person the main character grew up to be as she’s trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life. I can definitely appreciate the value of what the film was going for... but, the whole thing was just too disjointed and not always that interesting for me to get all that invested. Looking back, I kinda find it hard to find the words to describe this movie and how I feel about it, it was certainly a unique experience for me I’ll give it that and I don’t regret watching it, but unlike all the other Studio Ghibli films I’ve seen I don’t really see any reason to come back to this one. It’s not even that I don’t like grounded slice of life stuff, Whisper of the Heart is easily in my top 3 Ghibli films. I can’t say Only Yesterday was bad, because it really doesn’t feel like a bad film, but it’s not something I care to watch again.

After that I think the next anime movie I saw was Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys, one of two Advanced series Pokémon movies I missed out on. This one I liked more... but it was just okay. Really, I don’t know what else to say about it. The story was okay, Noah was a good character but everyone else was just okay. The action and visuals were okay, barring some conspicuous cgi. Deoxys and Raquaza were okay. Really, it just like one of the more average Pokémon movies I’ve seen. I’m still glad I saw it, but I remember as a kid hearing about it from people and knowing a Pokémon I really loved like Rayquaza was in it, I guess I always thought that it was something bigger and more interesting than it was. Ah well, that happens.

Hmm. Two meh movies in a row. Let’s spice that up with another Ghibli film. The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, which was much more up my alley. I love the art style of the movie, it worked perfectly well for an adaption of this Japanese folk story and just really stands out among most other anime movies I’ve seen. I liked the characters and the story, while there were a few questionable parts here or there, was pretty good, and I did feel sad by the time things came to an end. It wasn’t really the best Studio Ghibli film I’ve seen, but it certainly did a lot more for me than Only Yesterday.

Okay, I think the next film I saw was Akira. And that was... um... ... what the heck WAS it?

Seriously, I still don’t completely understand what I watched. I’ve heard this movie was adapted from a pretty long manga that wasn’t even finished when the movie was released, and that a lot of stuff had to be condensed... it shows.

I’ll say that the visuals were great and when I understood well enough what was going on, the movie certainly had plenty of good moments. But it feels like there were a lot of scenes or moments haphazardly slashed out of the film at various points that would have made the story feel more coherent. I could understand the gist of what was going on after giving things some thought and seeing the whole film, but the story and various characters feel underdeveloped or just not explained well enough at times, it was hard for me to get invested and just enjoy the movie. It wasn’t a bad experience necessarily, but I think this is one classic that’s really not for me. I think I’ll try to read the manga at some point, but I honestly didn’t quite get the film. And this is coming from someone who was able to mostly follow Evangelion.

And after that bit of weird grittiness, I watched another Pokémon movie. Pokémon Heroes. This was honestly the only original series Pokémon movie I had never seen before the cast change, since I just never got around to it for some reason. And I gotta say, I really enjoyed it. It wasn’t as great and epic or had as much depth as stuff like Spell of the Unown or Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, but it was a really charming movie with some genuinely touching and sad moments. It was well animated, the villains didn’t have a lot of depth but they were more fun to watch than a lot of movie villains. Latios and Latias were pretty interesting, and Ash was at his best here. The whole thing with Ash possibly getting kissed by Latias at the end is a little weird, but hey, it wasn’t as creepy as say that kiss scene from Sonic 06, and this wouldn’t be the first time the anime has had a Pokémon crush on Ash. Ain’t that right, Bayleef? Apart from that though, this was a fun movie and I’d gladly come back to it sometime soon.

Wish I could say the same for the next Pokémon movie, Hoopa and the Clash of Ages... boy that felt hollow.

You know, I don’t really mind that the movie didn’t have a strong story. If they wanted to make a movie that was all about spectacle and showing off as many legendary pokemon in a big battle as possible, I’m all for that. There’s nothing wrong with a dumb movie, as long as it’s something fun. But honestly, the plot was so thin and unengaging, that when it got to the clash of legends, everything just felt kind of... bland. Like, there were good moments, but overall the fight just felt empty and not as spectacular as a battle of this scale should be. There was no sense of scale or tension, it was just... meh. There were a lot of interesting ideas for a story here, but everything felt underdeveloped and that it would have made more sense as a long arc of the show.

And then there were plenty of stupid things in the movie, worst of which being that literal deus ex machina of a climax. I’ll give Pokémon the First Movie this credit, it had a lot of dumb moments, but the movie at least felt interesting and enjoyable. This... ehh, I just couldn’t find it all that satisfying. And I really wanted to enjoy it. Honestly it’s not often I finish a movie feeling pretty empty, but here you go.

Thankfully I did have time for one more Pokémon movie, Jirachi Wish maker, the last Advanced generation movie I hadn’t seen. And luckily it was decent. Nothing great, more around Destiny Deoxys level quality. In that it was really average and a little slow at parts, but it had plenty of good moments to it and it was overall charming, which felt like a needed breath of fresh air considering I watched it immediately after Hoopa and the Clash of Ages (Came in the post together). But this post is going on pretty long so I can’t go into much more detail.

And then the last film I watched was The Last: Naruto the movie.

(Deep breaths).

I have a lot of mixed feelings about Naruto these days. I discovered the series when it was still airing on Jetix in my country (Back when Jetix was still a thing), and I quickly grew to love it. For a long time it became my favourite show of all time, even briefly eclipsing Dragon Ball Z as my favourite anime (Given time and retrospect and watching Dragon Ball and Z again, no, they’re still my favourite, but back then that’s how I felt). I really loved the series and I kept up with every update on the story, and despite not enjoying a lot of the stuff with Sasuke after the fight with Itachi I enjoyed everything in the manga right through the Invasion of Pain story arc... and then things gradually started slipping off the rails for me.

I won’t give you a full detailed account of my personal history and how I felt about the series as things went on, but I kept up with news on the story and checked in on the manga right up until it ended, and from the conclusion to the Kage summit arc right to the end, soooo much stupid and bad stuff happened that just left me confused, annoyed, baffled and angry that Naruto honestly just turned into a chore and then a big disappointment, and I was only following updated on it because I was too invested to not want to see how it ended. I legitimately don’t think I’ve ever been angrier at a plot twist than I was with the whole Kaguya is the big evil mastermind reveal than I have been with any other reveal outside of One More Day. It got to the point that while it ended, even though things I wanted desperately to see for the longest time like Naruto becoming Hokage and getting together with Hinata ended up happening, I just wasn’t satisfied and in fact all I could feel was empty and upset that the second half of the series had turned out so badly.

The final third of Naruto was honestly the most frustrating experience I’ve had with any piece of media I’ve ever loved outside of maybe a lot of the nonsense Marvel’s been pulling like OMD and HYDRA Cap. I’ve been feeling melancholy about the whole thing for years, just feeling down and empty and wishing things had turned out better. I never even saw The Last despite it sounding like the story I’d been wanting to see.

Recently I’ve been feeling more and more nostalgic for it, especially between the whole announcements of it’s follow up Boruto and the Shippuden anime FINALLY coming to an end. So, I recently ordered up the DVD, and yesterday I watched The Last: Naruto the Movie for the first time.

And for all the ups and downs and mixed feelings, all the bitter feelings I’ve had over Naruto... I enjoyed the movie. It wasn’t perfect, but it was beautifully animated, had some great fight, the story was good, and as someone who considered NaruHina their number 1 OTP for years, to the point it’s actually what got me to start reading fanfiction, the movie was really touching. It was satisfying seeing Naruto and Hinata finally getting together, and that final scene especially was just beautiful.

I won’t go into full detail, because if I feel like it I might do a sort of review on the movie at some point, but I’m very glad I watched it. After the last several years, it felt like the closure I never really got with this series. I can’t force myself to sit through or enjoy a lot of the stuff towards the tail end of Naruto, but for what it’s worth, looking back... I’m still glad I got into it. I’m glad for all the fond memories I have of the franchise. I’m glad for all the good in Naruto, and all the good times I’ve had being a fan. I’m glad that Naruto got to fulfil his dream and earn the happy ending he so very much deserved, and got to be with a woman who truly loves him. And... I’m glad for The Last. That it exists, and that I finally watched it.

Honestly, I think now I want to go back and watch some of the series when it was good, for old times sake. And when the DVD for Boruto comes out in June on Amazon, I think I’ll watch that movie too. Who knows, if I like that maybe I’ll check out the anime or manga follow up too. Less likely, but who knows, I’m feeling nostalgic now.

I may not be able to call Naruto my favourite show anymore. And I won’t call the second half of Part II of the manga and Shippuden good. But I think now enough time has passed that the bitterness I’ve been feeling over the series has finally faded, and I can be happy to still call myself a fan of Naruto. It’s not perfect, it should have ended up better in the later stages. But when it was good, it was something magical to me, and I choose to remember it for all the joy it brought to me.

So, to close it out... thanks Kishimoto. Thank you for all the times your series brightened up my life. Good luck with whatever you do next.

Until then, I’ll just leave things at the updated list. I’m just gonna go finish Yu Yu Hakusho now.
