August Update

I’ve had several people ask about the rest of Poke-BFZ, wondering if the project was abandoned and other things. I”ve been working hard on the Pokemon Battle for Zendikar Series, and in the next week or so I will have all the drawings done. I’ve done 2-3 drafts of each Pokemon, not settling until theres something resting perfectly in the uncanny valley. I don't want to “phone in” any pieces and aim for a high quality image that is worth my time, and eventually good enough to produce as tokens.  I’ve had an outpouring of positive responses and will be excited to show you all the finished product.  I apologize for the drop off of articles and decks, I’ve been busy with our local commander group finally getting consistent, and really want that to keep going. Also, I am in the process of getting my judge certification, working closely with local judges to be 100% ready. Lots of exciting magic related stuff is happening soon, and hopefully next week I’ll have some more spawn for ya.

Monarch of Emrakul

Weeks passed, and the people of Turntimber had all sough refuge within gray pelt. They knew they were safe from the Eldrazi behemoths, but something more subtle and sinister had been infecting the minds of the denizens of Ondu. The days grew to darkness, and even the elves felt something in their minds slipping away. After all the druids had slipped away into the woods, the darkness was lifted only to reveal an otherworldly menace. Flying spawn of the Emrakul brood that drive men crazy when they gaze upon them. When the elves first spotted one, everything they saw split several dozen times into indestinct shapes. Now everyone who ventures onto Ondu is told to “Turn away from Turntimber”

Pods of Emrakul

All of turn timber felt a creeping sensation as the eldrazi horde battered against the edges of the forest. The denizens of gray pelt refuge saw the sky become darker amongst the sea of branches from the canopy, and thats when the trouble started. The refugees of gray pelt would go mad, one by one and desert the camp, going to climb the tall trees of turn timber. The druids were the first to go, only one had enough cognizance to utter “The Uksil, it calls to me, I must be amongst the light above the trees.”

Larvae of Emrakul

After the Eldrazi invasion, many sought refuge within Turntimber, hoping the twisting trees would keep the titans out. While this would keep out the pathrazers and brood porgenitors themselves, another threat came to sap the wells of green mana that cause such amazing growth within the temperate forest. The gray pelt druids heard an increase in the speaking tree language, Uksil, and saw more scuttling creatures up in the canopy. Little did they know that Emrakul had sent a tactical force to do them in.

The Cannon of Ulamog

Kiora was in the middle of a great brawl with the eldrazi off the coast of Jwar. Her summoned Leviathans and Kraken tore into the seemingly ceaseless sea of spawn. Her own spawn, one of the Shields of Ulamog, was taking in the wafts of mana leaking off of the storm and the frenzy of the fight. With its tendrils wrapped around several spawn, it ripped their semblance of heads off and devoured enough mana within them to grow into the class of spawn known as Cannons. Their stalwart stance and explosive fighting power earn them the title, and Kiora’s was no different. Within seconds it eradicated the sea of spawn from serpents maw, and in its battle rage stormed into the shore to ravage the forest of Turntimber. Kiora struggled with all her might to pull it out of the forest, but with its ties to the ocean and blue mana severed, the Cannon tore away from its master, ready to forge its own destiny of destruction.

The Shield of Ulamog

Deep under the surface of Zendikar’s vast oceans lie ancient ruins, holding priceless treasures. The mana locked within these caverns is like blood in the water to these spawn of Ulamog, who hoard over the treasure troves once they find them. When Kiora looked for her family of kindred merfolk hiding out in the ancient sunken cities, she found nothing but death, despair, and Eldrazi spawn. Her Shell of Ulamog ripped through the opposing forces in a frenzy, nearly flooding the caverns in the process. Kiora lost control for a moment as the beast reveled in its power, ready to claim the lost city as its own, but her experience with the Krakens of Theros helped her grab the reins once more to rid the seas of the Eldrazi plague.

The Shell of Ulamog

When the Eldrazi were released, thousands of spawn spilled out across the oceans of Zendikar, and crashed against the coasts. The shells of Ulamog are found amongst the white caps breaking against sunder bay. Kiora received hers not from professor Nahiri, but in a far more tragic tale. She was swimming through the ocean with one of her most trusted leviathans, in the ancient species that Wrexial hails from. As it was devouring fish, it rapidly lost all color from its scales and crashed against a nearby island. Kiora leapt off her beloved pet only to see it collapse inward to reveal the writhing spawn, glowing from the rich blue mana it had just consumed.

The Hellkite of Kozilek As the raptors flourish and devour more mana in the basin, they tend to stay there. Only the very daring of those spawn seek new heights, and at the highest peaks is where they can find rich enough mana to grow into Hellkites. Gideon sought to clear out the Puzzle tower of Tal Terig with his raptor when it ascended to the peak of the tower, it tore into the spawn there with such a great frenzy that its arms split and with a triumphant roar finally became one of the most feared spawn on Akoum.

The Raptor of Kozilek As the Torches absorb more and more mana, they hunger for more mana, and seek it out in more remote areas by the northern peaks of Akoum. The people of Affa try to keep these at bay, and luckily for them the majority of the Raptors reside in the basins deep in the Akoum Mountains. The Torch of Kozilek These spawn skittered to the Volcanic fields of Akoum. As they feed on the red mana around them, the floating shards from their tails grow stronger and behave more erratically. Nahiri found a hive of these spawn around the Teeth of Akoum, attacking a group of nomads in the mountain range, and brought them to Jwar Isle where she studied how to reseal the Eldrazi. Gideon chose one of these torches as his first Eldrazi companion for their ambition, and tendency to rush blindly into battle. Pokemon Battle for Zendikar Blooms of Emrakul

As the ivy spreads, it usually withers after a while of not finding enough mana to go fully into bloom. Nissa was able to get hers to bloom when she returned to Tal-Terig, where she had shattered the seal that kept the eldrazi on zendikar years ago. Her anguish over dooming the multiverse to the same fate that befell her home was fueled into a frenzy against all the eldrazi by the Eye of Ugin. Ivy of Emrakul When the Bulbs of Emrakul have absorbed enough mana it festers inside the body as a glowing red mass, and the outer shell begins to peel apart to expose it more to drain mana from anything nearby. The Elves call this the Ivy of Emrakul, since it creeps across the ground and any who touch it will soon be itching for death.
