How Likely is it For Each Pokemon Spin-Off to Come Back? (Part 1)

Pokemon spin-offs aren’t as frequent as they used to be. I think it’s because Switch games are a lot harder to make than the Gameboy and DS games. Heck, they’re even harder to make than GameCube and Wii games. It’s the same reason movie tie-in games stopped. Plus the few we do get don’t provide much representation to the latest generation at the time.

But I digress, I want to see the odds of each series coming back. To do that, I’ll look at who developed them, and what those developers are up to.

For the most part, I’ll only be looking at games that released on Nintendo systems.

Pokémon Stadium

The original Pokemon Stadium Games were developed by Nintendo EAD, a subdivision of Nintendo that in 2015 (following Iwada’s Death) merged with Nintendo SPD to form Nintendo EPD, which is Nintendo’s main development studio to this day.

But Nintendo EAD left the series in 2000. Genius Sonority was founded in 2002 to make home console Pokemon games, and took over the Pokémon Stadium concept. They would then make

The Orre Duology and Pokemon Battle Revolution

However between the GameCube and Wii entires, they’d make a game that’s define what Pokemon games they’d make going forward:

Pokémon Trozei

They went on to use that Pokemon head style for other puzzle games like

Pokemon Shuffle and Pokemon Cafe Remix

The latter is getting updated to this day

Besides Pokemon, they’re also working on a new game in the Denpa Man series: The New Denpa Men RPG Free!

That was a trip. So what about the main topic?

I’d say a new game in the Stadium or Coliseum style is never happening. Genius Sonority just doesn’t make games like it anymore. Although one could argue these games have been consistently made since Pokemon X and Y, seeing how Game Freak now makes 3D Pokemon games. And ever since Let’s Go, they’ve been making console Pokemon games.

As for Genius Sonority’s puzzle games, Cafe Remix is still going strong. So I don’t see a new game happening until it shuts down.

Oh yeah they also made Learn with Pokémon: Typing Adventure. Yeah no, there’s no way they’ll make a keyboard accessory for Switch just for that series to come back. It’s dead

Walking Wake and Iron Leaves as friendly rivals (that’s why there’s a vs in between them. It has nothing to do with the initials of their modern-day counterparts or the initials of the games they’re version-exclusive to because if they had anything to do with either of those I would’ve swapped them round to the S was on Wake’s side and the V was on Leaves’s side). At some point I will draw an Iron Leaves that isn’t doing its eye smiles I just thought it would look too aggressive if it didn’t have the eye smiles. I also have no idea what possessed me to have them face the front. Wake’ mane is intentionally asymmetrical, I wanted the impression it was blowing in the wind. And don’t ask what’s going on with Wake’s body, I had no idea what I was doing

Reason it’s only rough is because at the beginning of last year I thought it would be a good idea to do one drawing a month so I can compile them at the end of the year and I renewed that idea at the end of last year. Unfortunately, I like to come up with ideas for cool artworks that I then struggle to have the motivation to complete (I swear I want to get that Spriggie with a knife drawing done at some point) so I hadn’t actually started anything I had the motivation to finish today until today (it’s also why last month the only drawing I posted was the sad duck doodle from Halloween. Maybe that’s why it’s sad). I probably spent more time adding details like the glowing (which is supposed to represent their abilities Protosynthesis and Quark Drive activating. I like to headcanon that the Paradox Pokémon glow when their abilities are activated (does that include using Booster Energies? Haven’t thought about it but probably). The Future Paradox Pokémon use their energy light colours (purple for Miraidon) while the Past Paradox Pokémon don’t make that much sense half the time because I opted to go for colours their modern-day counterparts don’t have (at least in that body part) so Wake gets orange for the random gradients in its mane. While it’s close with Koraidon’s pink and Bolt’s red, that one makes the least amount of sense to me) than I would have spent doing the ink drawing and colouring

The reason their modern-day counterparts’ categories and their (Wake and Leaves’s) placeholder HOME Dex entries are there is because I wanted to fill some of the empty space above Leaves. I was also gonna include their Japanese names but I couldn’t work out how to paste into Procreate so I didn’t bother

While working on this artwork, I gave myself a joke challenge (which I was actually planning on doing if I drew Wake and Leaves in outfits for Café). I made myself a new playlist featuring random Judas Priest and Iron Maiden songs that either I’d warmed up to during my listening to every Judas Priest and Iron Maiden song challenge or I’d warmed up to previously but hadn’t properly appreciated until I relistened to them during the challenge and put the playlist on shuffle. Whenever I listened to a Judas Priest song I’d work on the Walking Wake side and then whenever I listened to an Iron Maiden song I’d work on the Iron Leaves side. Sometimes I had a few too many of one band in a row so two Judas Priest songs had to be skipped (I also skipped Hot Rockin’ because I’d just listened to it two songs ago because for some reason I put the single versions of Evening Star, Hot Rockin’ and Turbo Lover and the re-recorded versions of Prowler and Charlotte the Harlot even though I also had their original versions on there. With the exception of Evening Star, all of those got skipped the second time they turned up but I was only mentioning Hot Rockin’ because it was skipped while I was working on the drawing). Also Infinite Dreams isn’t the song I thought it was so I’m gonna have to work out what the correct song is and replace it

You straight up ignoring random trainers is funny as hell tho. Battles work on a double-dog dare honor system where I’m from and picturing someone power waking away from another trainer is genuine comedy. Been playing duel links recently, but the only other tcg I’ve played and still remember the rules of is Pokémon. Needless to say ive been loosing a lot of online duels.

Now normally i wouldn’t care too bad, id tweak my deck and move on to the next duel. The thing is tho im playing as yugi and holy shit, all of his loosing dialogue, and even his loosing portrait is so fucking pathetic. Like i love you yugi but can you chill on the self deprivation for ten seconds??? You’re making me feel like i stepped on a pet’s tail every time i lose, i cannot take it and i will cry

Night exploration

Shifting though the grass, the two boys hand in hand ran though the night sky. Away from the comfort of pallet town wearing their pyjamas, they weren’t supposed to go out until they got their first pokémon. Green watched as Red’s expression was mixed with excitement and anxiousness. With a chuckle and a squeeze of the other’s fingers he spoke up.

“It’s okay! Gramps won’t find us here.” Green put his index finger up to his lips as he spoke, leading Red to a plain field with grass that reached their waist.

The moonlight shining down on them, his eyes would sparkle in awe. His eyes drawing a line star to star, his hand raised into the emptiness of the night sky. He’s always seen the two pokémon in the book his grandpa always stored. Red always told him by hand that he found pikachus cute, Green would always tease them to go on their Pokémon journeys together finding company with an eevee. His mind shuffled though a lot of thoughts looking into the stars above, how he and Red would start their Pokémon journey, how will he battle, what pokémon he will catch with Red... To many people, stars meant very different yet meaningful things. But for him? He hoped for it to be their prophecy.

“Red! Do you see what I see too?”

little guy shelf

tldr: what the hell is a 'little guy'? an: i literally do not know where this came from.

when jihoon hears you huff for the fourth time in just as many minutes, he knows something must be wrong. after pausing the music coming out of his speakers and minimizing the tabs of production software on his monitor, he turns his chair to face you and is not surprised to hear you huff again. 

“bee,” he waits for you to look up at him before he asks, “what's the problem?” 

you huff again, but quickly pull yourself together and explain to him, very calmly, “there’s too many little guys on my shelf.”

jihoon blinks, sure he misheard you he asks again, “what is the problem?” 

you’re starting to get exacerbated, he can see it in the way you take a deep breath before explaining yourself, “my shelf, where i keep my little guys, there’s too many of them and now i can’t fit this one but this one is perfect! it has to go on my shelf.”

“i’m sorry, bee. i’m still confused. what is a ‘little guy’? and why does he have a designated shelf?” you two were still on opposite sides of the universe factory, and although the room was not big, he could not see the self in question from where he was, leaving him even more confused. 

“just come over here and look at my shelf, zi. you’ll get it if you can see it.” you could see the hesitation in his eyes at the thought of taking a break from production, but you were not above guilt-tripping. “come help me, zi. i need you,” you hoped your puppy-dog eyes still worked on him. 

turns out, they do. he got up and shuffled over to where you had squat down next to the second-to-bottom shelf on his wall. he’d never noticed before but the little shelf he’s offhandedly told you could be yours many, many months ago had been filled with little trinkets, or ‘guys’ he guessed. he wasn’t sure why you were so upset about this, though. 

“bee, i’m still confused. what exactly is the problem with your…guys?” he gestured vaguely to your plastic army.

“they’re all you! little tiny versions of you. and i’ve been collecting them but this one,” you lifted your hand to jihoon’s face. a tiny green man, bent over a barbell was staring back at him, his eyes were almost crossed trying to look at it. “this one will not fit! they all keep tipping over and then i stand them back up and then they tip over again! but he belongs here with these other little guys, zi. he belongs.” 

he gently pushed your hand out of his face, “yeah, bee. he totally belongs.” jihoon was still confused, but a little less so and terribly fond, “who else is there? who else represents me?” 

you lit up, clearly excited to explain your thought process to him. you turned, hand gently reaching into the molded infantry and remerging with a…grumpy penguin? 

jihoon was still confused but was ready to listen intently to your enthusiastic explanation, “tell me everything, bee.” he was doing this mostly to humor you, but he was intrigued.  

holding the little penguin out in front of you, you said, “this is badtz-maru. he is a penguin. he’s perpetually stuck in the first grade and wants to be the big boss of everything when he grows up.”

jihoon plucked the little plastic toy from your hand, turning it over to inspect it, “that's nice. but why is he me?” 

“well, he has black spiky hair, like you do,” you paused, looking at his long black hair, “sometimes.” you smiled sheepishly before continuing, “and penguins give rocks to their partners to show love. and you wrote ‘ruby’ and a ruby is technically a rock so…” you trailed off, embarrassed about your ramblings. 

jihoon had never thought you cuter. he reached the hand not holding his penguin self onto the shelf and pulled out a pokémon. “why flareon?” 

“oh! other than the sheer cuteness?” you were really on a tangent now, “‘flareon tends to isolate. and it’s in their nature to be lonely, so–”

jihoon interjected, “i am not lonely. nor do i isolate.” 

“well, that’s not true. you do isolate, don’t lie. and maybe not lonely per se, more of a loner. which again, you kind of are. plus, this little guy is spitting fire, which again, you do, so yeah. flareon, obviously.” 

“obviously.” jihoon was thoroughly amused. he had no idea any of this was in his studio. you’ve been hoarding toys here. toys that reminded you of him, “show me one more, bee.”

you pulled out, “a little baby, with a vegetable hat?” 

“no, zi. this is not any baby with a vegetable hat. this is the cabbage sonny angel. technically it’s the wrong kind of cabbage to make kimchi with but i’m choosing to let it slide because it’s little face looks just like yours!” 

you were very passionate about these so-called ‘little guys’ and although jihoon didn’t really get it, he loved you. and he loved that you thought about him so much that you would collect these little toys in his honor. 

“here,” he grabs the green weightlifting one off the discard pile on the floor and stands up. he rounds the corner to his desk and, “it can live here. since it’s ‘me’ and all.” he places it right next to his monitor, right in his line of vision, but not blocking anything important. 

you got up from the pile, leaving your little guys on the floor to see where this little guy had been placed. 

coming up behind jihoon you siaid, “zi! he looks perfect there!” you leaned over and placed a soft kiss on his cheek. 

he blushed but still said, “you don’t have to keep the little guys just on that one shelf. use the whole wall, bee. my space is your space.”
