Many modern bathroom faucets today are made with a drain assembly that must be installed along with the faucet. These faucets seem difficult to install because they have more parts than a simple drain, but the steps are similar. This makes installing a drain a task that most homeowners can accomplish without the help of a plumber.

Turn off the water supply at the valve under the sink and place a bucket under the drain pipes.

Use a pipe wrench to loosen the nut that connects the drain pipe to the trap and remove the trap.

Loosen and remove the nut at the base of the drain to the sink and remove the drain basket. If the drain basket cannot be removed, score around the flange with a spatula to break the seal. Scrape the putty around the drain opening with the putty knife.

Screw the locknut, washer and gasket that came with your new assembly onto the new drain body. Roll a piece of plumber's putty between your hands into a thin strand.

Screw the drain flange onto the drain body until it can no longer be turned. It may be easier if a helper turns the flange while you hold the drain body. Hold the drain body while turning the lock nut counterclockwise to tighten it.

Position the slip nut so the threads are facing down and slide it over the bottom of the drain body.

Wrap Teflon tape around the threads at the bottom of the drain housing and replace the trap. Use pliers to tighten the union nut over the drain housing and trap connection.

Install the drain assembly into the drain basket from the top.

Wrap Teflon tape around the threaded opening on the side of the drain housing. Insert the horizontal connecting rod - that's the part with the ball on the end - into the drain housing opening until the ball fits into the bottom of the plunger.

Repairing a leaking connection for a sink in the bathroom

The connection is the piece of pipe that connects the faucet to the hot and cold water supply. There are a number of factors that can cause the leak; this needs to be identified early to fix the problem.

Check the leakage

Check under the sink to see where the leak is coming from. It may be directly under the faucet or the handles. If the leak is not in any of these places, it may be in the connection between the fitting and the water lines.

Turn off the water supply

Turn off the water shut-off valve located under or next to the sink. Never work on the connections below the sink when the water supply is still on. If the shut-off valve is stuck, turn off the water supply for the entire home.

Repairing the leak

If the leak occurs where the water lines are connected, try tightening the connections with a sink wrench. If it has not, turn the water supply back off and remove the water supply lines. Wipe the male thread of the connection with a dry cloth and tape it with 2 to 3 layers of Teflon tape.

Reconnect the water lines, turn on the water, and check for leaks. If the water lines are still leaking after the repairs, they need to be replaced. If the leak is coming from the connection between the fitting and the faucet or handles, make sure the connections are tight. If this does not fix the problem, remove the entire connector below the faucet, apply Teflon tape to the male threads of the faucet and handles, and reconnect. Turn on the water to check if the problem is fixed. If it is not, you will need to install a replacement. This is especially necessary if the thread is corroded or loose.

Replace the damaged connector

Purchase a new connector from a plumbing store. Disconnect the water supply from the old connector and loosen the connection between it and the faucet. Pull it out and set it aside. Unpack the replacement part and inspect it for damage. Insert the middle part into the male thread of the faucet. Tighten the connection with a sink wrench. Connect the supply lines to the male threads under both faucet handles and tighten securely.
